ورد لاعب آخر في التسجيل الصوتي: “كيف لفريق قذر مثل برشلونة أن يعلمه الغناء؟”.

NSW claim Shield after Smith ton

If the Sheffield Shield final petered out inevitably to a dull draw in front of a small gathering at Manuka Oval, then there was no fizz lacking in the celebrations of a New South Wales team toasting their first domestic title since 2008

ScorecardNew South Wales were led ably by the increasingly mature Steven Smith•Getty ImagesIf the Sheffield Shield final petered out inevitably to a dull draw in front of a small gathering of spectators at Manuka Oval, then there was no fizz lacking in the celebrations of a New South Wales team toasting their first domestic title since 2008.Led ably by the increasingly mature Steven Smith, the Blues were not in much danger of defeat from the time the Man of the Match Moises Henriques shepherded the tail well beyond 400. Rain on day four settled the issue after Western Australia’s reply had been throttled by Josh Hazlewood’s pace and movement. But it was highly appropriate that the final day had a Smith hundred as its centrepiece, for his batting and leadership has been arguably the most promising single theme of the summer for Australian cricket. The redemptive narrative of Test match success against England and South Africa has been accompanied by the emergence of Smith as a young leader and top class batsman, rather vindicating the national coach Darren Lehmann’s assertion at the outset of the summer that the country’s next captain “will find us”.Looking back on a summer of enormous riches, Smith confessed to living out a hatful of his dreams in the space of six months. That he had not taken part in a Shield final before only underlined how thick and fast Smith’s wishes have been fulfilled over the course of the season.”It’s very special, this is the first Shield final I’ve been a part of and to win the Shield it’s just been an amazing 12 months for me and the whole thing’s still kind of a blur,” he said. “Everything’s been so amazing, dreams have come true. To win an Ashes series, win an away series with Australia and then to back it up with the Sheffield Shield it’s very, very special.”Smith’s front foot play was cause for plenty of admiration from the national selector John Inverarity, who watched the 24-year-old split the WA field repeatedly and make light work of a slow and now ageing pitch that made scoring a difficult task throughout. The trio of strokes that took Smith from 89 to three figures summed up much about his talent. He lofted an audacious drive for six down the ground, danced into a flick to the straight midwicket boundary, then glanced deftly fine to register his fifth hundred of the season. In receipt of this punishment was Ashton Agar, who could do worse than look at Smith’s career arc as inspiration for how to move beyond a precocious beginning into a pattern of sustained performance.Australia’s tradition of ending the Shield with a competition final stretches back to 1983 when these two sides met in a fractious encounter at the WACA Ground. It is a concept open to some exploitation, particularly that of the home side needing only a draw to win the title. But as the ICC found so vexing in their failed attempts to schedule a World Test Championship, one-off fixtures will always have certain pitfalls.”I think you should have an advantage for coming first if you’re going to have a final,” Smith said of a match that was called off by the mutual agreement of the captains at 1.50pm on the final afternoon. “If they go down that road I think that’s the best way to do it.”Henriques was even more adamant about keeping the show-piece match, which he had termed the most important of his career. Asked about the “hollow” conclusion, he offered a passionate retort. “I don’t know where you’re describing this hollow feeling from because it doesn’t feel hollow within me,” he said.”It’s very special, it’s not just about the final. We earned this home final and played the way we did, we dictated the whole game, we outplayed them every day of this fixture, so there’s no hollow feelings here. I can’t put it down in words to be completely honest, I’m still quite speechless and haven’t even had a beer touch my lips yet, so I’m verymuch looking forward to getting in the change rooms.”With no option but to play things out until Smith offered his hand in consolation, the Warriors were left forlorn, their own 15-year wait for another Shield title destined to go on. Only Marcus North’s dismissal of Kurtis Patterson drew brief smiles from the WA collective, while the wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman grimaced when a rare failure to glove the ball cleanly stung his fingers.Their captain Adam Voges observed the scene with a heavy heart, as all the strides made by WA this season under the tutelage of Justin Langer came to nothing. But he also retained some measure of hope, exhorting his men to use these memories next summer “We’ve worked our guts out to get here, unfortunately it hasn’t been the five days we hoped for,” he said. “But we’ll use that to drive us, and make sure we’re back better next season.”

McCullum rues one that got away

New Zealand were so close to sealing the series with what looked like a third successive victory but it was not to be, and Brendon McCullum praised India for their fightback

Crowe: Guptill and Williamson played key roles

When MS Dhoni got out, India needed 131 with four wickets and 86 deliveries left. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin’s half-centuries ended up tying the match, and Brendon McCullum admitted it was “potentially” one that got away. New Zealand were so close to sealing the series with what looked like a third successive victory but it was not to be, and McCullum praised India for their fightback.”A great game of cricket. It ebbed and flowed the whole way through that second innings,” McCullum said. “Credit to India, when they looked as if they were out of the game, they flexed their muscle a little bit and got themselves back into it. And just when we thought we had it again, obviously they came back. The innings that Jaddu played at the end was pretty awesome.”We had our chances, there is no doubting that. Definitely had our chances – a few catches and a few run-out opportunities and a few things – but it is a tough one. It was a great game of cricket to be involved in, just disappointing that didn’t get the result in the end but a tie is a tie.”Brendon McCullum on giving Corey Anderson the final over: “It seems to me that he is learning quicker than anyone in international cricket about batting and bowling at the moment”•Getty Images

McCullum said New Zealand were pretty sure Jadeja had nicked Mitchell McClenaghan behind in the 47th over when he was given not out. But while he felt there was little New Zealand could do about it, he said his bowlers could have bowled better at the death.”Our plan was very much to keep the ball out of Jadeja’s arc and we obviously got hit for a couple of sixes straight towards the end there. The wicket was pretty slow, so obviously a little bit tough to use that short-ball tactic to the effect that we have so far in this series. When you don’t win, you obviously question a couple of things but I still thought we were pretty good without being top draw.”India needed 18 off the final over, and New Zealand only had allrounder Corey Anderson as the seam option as the specialist quick bowlers were done with their quota. McCullum said that was because he had used someone like Tim Southee to try and take wickets earlier, and added he had enough belief in Anderson to give him the 50th over.”It’s not always going to work, poor fellow sitting in there at the moment is a bit upset but it’s the nature of having those opportunities in the death as well. He again learnt a lot tonight about bowling and seems to me that he is learning quicker than anyone in international cricket about batting and bowling at the moment. We will keep backing him, he did a great job for us today with the ball and gave us the opportunity to win the game and whilst he didn’t close it out, I thought he did a really good job and he will learn a lot from it.”Obviously Tim is another death bowler for us but at that stage of the game, we were looking for wickets. We knew that if we kept taking wickets, then we were going to be in with a pretty good chance of winning the game. Corey is one of our options at the death. So is Tim, Mitch as well. We have used Kane (Williamson) at the death at times as well.”It’s about how the game plays out based on when you need wickets, when you need to push and when you need to hold back. Today we were pushing and hence we went to Southee a little earlier and left Corey at the end. Even Nathan had to bowl pretty deep into the innings, under the circumstances when you are chasing wickets.”

Back to cricket at Royals' fortress

Overview
Rajasthan Royals have been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the last few months but the Champions League offers them a chance to bring the spotlight back to their cricket. The corruption scandal that came to the fore towards the end of this year’s IPL took much of the gloss away from what had been an excellent season for the Rahul Dravid-led side. Royals were one of two teams this year to remain unbeaten at home and despite lacking in star value when compared to other IPL teams, players like Brad Hodge, Stuart Binny, James Faulkner, Kevon Cooper, Ajinkya Rahane and the captain himself made their performances count.Royals have always been a personality driven team. From the days of Shane Warne to the current arrangement under a vocal version of Dravid, the team’s captain has remained the most visible part of it on the field. And understandably so – the biggest domestic player in the team Rahane is an introvert, so someone has to compensate to keep the young team buoyant. It will be the last time Dravid will be seen on the cricket field and after the sadness that came with the realisation he was sailing a ship with numerous holes, he would be looking forward to a good sign-off. Despite the heavy losses the team has incurred in terms of personnel, it still remains an efficient battery, with a cannon the size of Shane Watson. What’s more, they are playing all their league matches at their fortress.Key players
This IPL season, Shane Watson was intimidating with the bat, top-scoring for the team with 543 runs at a strike rate of 142.89, the highlight not being his century, but his 34-ball assault on Chennai Super Kings’ bowlers in seaming conditions. He also picked up 13 wickets, bowling for the first time after a gap of a few months. In the absence of Siddharth Trivedi he would assume a bigger role in the team’s bowling plans. Batting-wise, he is always a threat at this level, and his recent century against England will be a major boost to the team. Then there is Brad Hodge, the second-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket behind Chris Gayle, who brings that 196-match experience to lend stability to the batting line-up in the lower half. Add Rahane, the silent accumulator at the top, to the list and the batting has a sense of depth to it. The bowling will be led by Faulkner, who was second in the list of leading wicket-takers in IPL 6.Surprise package
Ashok Menaria featured in only one game in the IPL earlier this year, but he has struck rich form ahead of the tournament. Playing against New Zealand A, he picked up 10 wickets in three matches with his left-arm spin and scored a match-winning half-century as well. Along with Stuart Binny, he could form the backbone of the middle order.Weakness
In the IPL this year, Royals enjoyed the extra pace and bounce afforded by the Jaipur pitch and they will get the same home advantage in the Champions League. However, the teams they are going to play against include Perth Scorchers, Otago Volts and Lions, who would also prefer those conditions. In such a scenario, the absence of a quality spinner could hurt Royals. Pravin Tambe is the lone specialist spinner, but at 42 and with no first-class experience, his inclusion would always be a gamble.

Sunrisers could prove tricky for Royal Challengers

Match facts

Sunday, April 7, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Heading into their first away match of IPL 2013, Royal Challengers Bangalore may start favourites but Sunrisers Hyderabad, with a victory as well in their opening game, showed they can be tough and determined opponents. How formidable the Sunrisers’ challenge will be depends largely on their batting order. With the exception of Thisara Perera, nobody really managed to take charge of the innings after getting a start. Against Royal Challengers, they will be tested against a stronger bowling attack.Chris Gayle is fit for Royal Challengers after limping through a good part of his match-winning innings in their first game. Gayle, again, had a huge influence on his team’s fortunes, but he could have done with more support during his unbeaten 92. He and Virat Kohli added 25 before Royal Challengers slipped to 80 for 5. Only KB Arun Karthik gave him company of any significance. Getting Gayle early offers Sunrisers’ bowlers a strong chance of containing Royal Challengers. On Sunday, Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan will be up against Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma on a track that could likely play the way it did in the low-scorer between Sunrisers and Pune Warriors. Royal Challengers would have noted Steyn’s dominance in his first spell but playing Perera and Amit Mishra could prove just as challenging.

Players to watch

Amit Mishra, the second-highest wicket-taker in the IPL, has bowled fairly consistently through the IPLs. Against Warriors, he brought out his variations to stifle the batsmen. Royal Challengers have good players of spin in Dilshan and Virat Kohli and as the lead spinner in the side, Mishra will have to shoulder the responsibility of keeping the opposition in check.
Tillakaratne Dilshan took the IPL by storm in 2009, scoring 418 runs for Delhi Daredevils. Since his shift to Royal Challengers, he’s been an important member of the line-up, scoring more than 500 runs in 20 games. He would no doubt have rued the shot that got him out against Mumbai Indians, but with two centuries and a half-century in his last five innings, Dilshan will be eager to put that start behind him and get going in IPL 2013.

Stats and trivia

  • Royal Challengers have won just one out of their last four matches in Hyderabad. Their last victory in Hyderabad was in 2008.
  • With three wickets in the last match against Mumbai Indians, R Vinay Kumar became the first Royal Challengers bowler to get to 50 wickets. He now has 52 wickets from 49 matches at an average of 26.07 for his side. His overall tally in the IPL is 64 wickets in 62 matches, which puts him among the top 10 wicket-takers of the tournament.

Quotes

“It was probably a more bowler-friendly wicket. It was not a free-flowing wicket. You could not just go there and play your shots. The ball was not quite coming onto the bat.”

Trinidad and Tobago win six games in a row

A round-up of Regional Super50 matches played on April 7, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2013Trinidad and Tobago made it six wins out of six, beating Barbados by 41 runs in Port of Spain. After choosing to bat, they were in trouble at 5 for 3 but captain Denesh Ramdin and Jason Mohammed put together a match-winning stand. Ramdin struck 134 at better than a run a ball, with 12 fours and four sixes, and Mohammed played a steady hand of 63. The pair added 170 and helped take the score to 264 for 8. Seamer Marlon Richards struck early for T&T in the chase and he was supported by the rest of the bowling contingent, as Barbados lost wickets at frequent intervals. Though many of their batsmen got starts, only one, Jonathan Carter, went on to score a half-century. Shannon Gabriel, Rayad Emrit, and Yannick Cariah bagged two wickets each, as Barbados were bowled out for 223.Leeward Islands slipped to their fifth defeat, losing to Windward Islands by 36 runs in a low-scoring game in Antigua. Windwards chose to bat and though Leewards struck regularly, the middle order, led by a half-century from captain Liam Sebastien, took their team to 194 for 9. Jacques Taylor took four wickets but his effort was in vain. Six of Leewards’ batsmen reached double-figures but no one stuck around long enough to guide the chase. Shane Shillingford, who had an excellent home Test series against Zimbabwe, grabbed his best returns in List A cricket, taking 6 for 32, and restricting Leewards to just 158 for 9.Jamaica will meet Windward Islands in the semi-final after they beat Guyana by two wickets in a rain-affected match in Guyana. Electing to bat, Guyana could not put up a challenging score as David Bernard (4 for 24) and Nkrumah Bonner (3 for 23) struck regularly. Guuyana then lost four wickets within 15 runs and managed to score 190 for 9 in 49 overs, as Anthony Bramble and Assad Fudadin top-scored with 31 each. Jamaica’s top five batsmen put together only 55 runs but Carlton Baugh’s 40 and double-digit scores from Nikita Miller and Andrew Richardson for the ninth wicket completed the chase off the last ball.

The IPL resumes on May 17 after it was suspended for just over a week in the wake of the India-Pakistan cross-border tensions. RCB will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the first game, with Ngidi expected to be a part of the fixture, in case Josh Hazlewood does not recover in time from a shoulder niggle.Out of the seven teams which have the WTC final-bound South Africa players, SRH are out of contention. GT have played a chunk of the season without Rabada, the last being on March 29 against MI and are just one step away from sealing a playoffs spot.MI will be most affected with their South Africa contingent departing after the league stage. With 336 runs in 12 innings, Rickelton is MI’s second-highest run-getter, while Bosch has played useful cameos and bowled decently in the three games he’s played.Jansen’s departure will also worry PBKS, who need two wins in their last three games to confirm a playoff spot. Jansen is PBKS’ third-highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets in as many games. Stubbs, meanwhile, has been DC’s designated finisher and is their third-highest run-getter this season with 259 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 151.46.Markam has 348 runs in 11 innings for LSG and is their third-highest run-scorer so far. LSG are currently placed seventh on the points table and need to win all their remaining fixtures, and even that might not be enough for them to make it to the playoffs. The league phase ends on May 27, while the playoffs begin on May 29, with the final on June 3.
