Celtic: McAvennie reacts to Edouard news

Former Celtic man Frank McAvennie has shared his thoughts on Odsonne Edouard’s proposed move to Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Leicester closing in on Edouard

According to a report from TEAMtalk last weekend, the Foxes are confident of securing Edouard’s services this summer.

Sources close to the situation claimed that the 23-year-old is almost certainly heading to the King Power, where he will reunite with former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers.

Edouard has had his heart set on a Celtic Park exit in recent months, with a Hoops source admitting a possible deal for Eddie Howe will make no difference.

Reports have touted at £15m fee and Celtic may have to give half of that fee to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Latest: McAvennie ‘gutted’

Talking about the recent development to Football Insider, McAvennie admitted he is ‘gutted’ the forward hasn’t shined for the Hoops this season.

“He’s different from what Leicester already have.

“But I thought whoever Leicester bought next would be Vardy’s replacement. That’s not Edouard.

“They are very different players. Eddie doesn’t want to run in behind. Maybe Brendan wants to change his style.

“Edouard’s downed tools this season, that’s not a good look. He’s got everything in his locker but sometimes he doesn’t want to do it.

“He’s been linked with everyone but he’s still at Celtic. Maybe Rodgers knows he can get him back to his best.

“There is definitely a talented player in there. I’m gutted he hasn’t done it this season.”

The Verdict: McAvennie unfair on Edouard?

We feel McAvennie’s comments regarding Edouard’s displays in the current campaign are unfair – Yes, he may not have been at his overall best, but he’s still netted on a regular basis.

The Frenchman has scored 22 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions and is the outright top scorer in the Scottish Premiership. His tally is only six goals short of his 2019/20 season in 10 fewer games.

Celtic as a whole have struggled in all competitions this season, but the stats show that Edouard has actually been a shining light for the Hoops, so he looks likely to be a big miss next year.

Pundit says Spurs should consider Bielsa

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that Daniel Levy should consider Marcelo Bielsa as a potential replacement for Jose Mourinho.

With Tottenham out of Europe and likely to finish outside the top four, the Portuguese was sacked on Monday morning, meaning Levy’s search for a successor is well underway.

Former player Ryan Mason has been placed in temporary charge for the remainder of the season, with Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann the Spurs chairman’s number one target, although the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo have also been mentioned.

But with Bielsa’s contract at Elland Road expiring this summer and no agreement for him to extend his stay in Yorkshire as things stand, Windass believes that he’s one Tottenham should be looking at.

Asked whether he thinks the Argentine could be tempted by the move to north London, Windass told Football FanCast:

“Good shout, good shout. Yeah, without a doubt. Who knows what Bielsa is thinking, but he would be one on the lips of Daniel Levy.

“We won’t have to worry about it until the end of the season because Ryan [Mason] has got it, so good luck to the kid.”

Leeds youngster tipped to leave

Leeds United youngster Robbie Gotts has been tipped to leave the club this summer, with Marcelo Bielsa not seeing him as part of his plans.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at Salford City, having moved to the League Two club in January, affording him more regular first team football.

Gotts’ current Leeds deal expires at the end of next season, raising question marks over what the next chapter in his career will be.

Gotts could leave Leeds, claims Hay

According to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay, the youngster is unlikely to convince Bielsa to be part of his future plans, with a move elsewhere appearing to be on the cards:

“He’s [Gotts] a lovely lad and a good player but I got a distinct impression that he suspects his future lies elsewhere. Bielsa always keeps his leading under-23s close to him. He’d rather they trained at Thorp Arch than played elsewhere on loan.

“This naturally concludes that anyone who is allowed to leave on loan is a fair distance from his plans.”

Gotts has managed three appearances for Leeds to date, making his debut away to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round in January 2020.

Transfer Tavern take

In truth, it makes sense for all parties for Gotts to find a new permanent club moving forward, with the midfielder once described as ‘excellent’ by Richie Wellens.

If Bielsa can’t guarantee him a regular squad role, he risks growing stagnant in his career, so being a key man at a different club makes far more sense.

Leeds are now at a level where they are a mid-table Premier League club with aspirations of improving further – Gotts doesn’t appear to be at that standard in Bielsa’s eyes.

West Ham land Yarmolenko injury boost

David Moyes may soon have improved competition for places at West Ham United as Andriy Yarmolenko has returned to training after sustaining knee ligament damage.

That’s according to images shared on the Irons’ official club website, which have since been picked up by the Ukraine Football Federation, after it was noted that the 31-year-old is back amongst the action at Rush Green.

Yarmolenko has missed the Hammers’ last five Premier League fixtures after suffering damage to his knee during last month’s FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Manchester United.

The Ukraine international had started the action at Old Trafford in a centre-forward role in the absence of Michail Antonio, who had been rested due to showing serious fatigue against Fulham.

Yarmolenko now appears to be stepping up his rehabilitation with a return to the grass pitches at West Ham’s Rush Green facilities, having joined his teammates as they prepared for last Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to the Red Devils.

Moyes did not address Yarmolenko’s road to recovery when discussing the fitness of his squad last week, but offered updates on Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku after they returned to training and showed positive signs of progress.

The Irons boss had opted against putting a time scale on Yarmolenko’s return in the immediate aftermath of his injury, instead noting that he hoped “that the damage is not serious”.

Images of Yarmolenko now working with the West Ham squad would suggest the forward is nearing a potential return to selection alongside Ogbonna and Masuaku. He was also recently named in Andriy Shevchenko’s expanded Ukraine squad for the upcoming international break.

Having Yarmolenko available for West Ham’s run of fixtures beyond the March internationals will come as a boost to Moyes, with the east London outfit still to face a few of their rivals for a European qualifying berth in Leicester City, Chelsea and Everton.

Yarmolenko may be unlikely to feature in Sunday’s London derby with Arsenal, given Moyes did not address his progress when speaking to the media while discussing Ogbonna and Masuaku last week, but the Ukraine winger’s return could soon be a boost.

Moyes has previously dubbed Yarmolenko as offering “good competition” for places at the London Stadium, and has praised the £7m-rated forward as being a “very talented player”.

That competition can come in both his natural wide role to challenge Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma for minutes, but also in providing depth behind Antonio given the striker is Moyes’ only recognised centre-forward after Sebastien Haller’s winter exit.

Yarmolenko started two of West Ham’s FA Cup ties this season in a striker role and netted with composure in the fourth-round win over Doncaster Rovers, after which West Ham assistant coach Alan Irvine praised his performance.

“It was very encouraging the way Yarmo performed. He has played there before and we know the ability he has got and we know that if we get him through in those kinds of situations one v one with the goalkeeper, he is a very, very good finisher,” said Irvine, via quotes by football.london.

Goals have not been an issue for Antonio in most throughout Yarmolenko’s spell on the sidelines, netting against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, but the 30-year-old was often invisible at Old Trafford on Sunday and helped to leave Moyes feeling underwhelmed with his offence.

Yarmolenko is not the ideal option to offer cover and support at striker, but he has proven to be an adept back-up who may soon provide Moyes a welcome boost upon his full return.

LUFC: Orta eyes Bielsa replacement

According to recent reports, Victor Orta and Leeds United have targeted Ruben Amorim as the club’s next manager – should Marcelo Bielsa walk away from the Whites this summer.

Reports from Portugal, as cited by Leeds Live, claim that the Sporting CP manager is viewed by Leeds as a potential replacement for Bielsa, whose contract expires at Elland Road this summer.

While the 65-year-old Leeds manager has confirmed he will inform the club of whether or not he plans to stay on longer than his current deal before the summer – as yet, there are no reports that a deal has been discussed between the Argentine and Orta.

As a result, Portuguese journalist, Bruno Andrade, has claimed that Amorim is one of the candidates Orta has lined up as a potential replacement for Bielsa, should he indeed depart Leeds at the end of their current campaign.

Transfer Tavern Take

While it still feels as if Bielsa’s job is unfinished at Leeds, as the newly-promoted side currently occupy 11th place in the Premier League standings despite the lingering feeling that they have not yet hit their ceiling, the previous unpredictability of the 65-year-old very much leaves the possibility of his departure this summer as entirely plausible.

And, considering the 37-year-old Amorim has impressed during his short time in charge of Sporting, losing just four of his 40 matches at the helm of the Portuguese side, he would very much appear to be an enticing prospect in the event that Bielsa does walk away.

What Nagelsmann would fix at Spurs

Julian Nagelsmann will be Tottenham Hotspur’s top option to replace Jose Mourinho should fortunes not soon change in north London, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

The Telegraph’s Matt Law has claimed that the Portuguese boss is facing a pivotal 12-day period in which his job could be under serious threat past the current campaign.

Spurs have lost five of their last six in the Premier League but do still have a place in the Carabao Cup final and likely the last 16 of the Europa League too.

The RB Leipzig manager, thought to be one of the most exciting up-and-coming coaches in the game, is said to be Daniel Levy’s first choice should he be forced to sack Mourinho.

He’ll make Spurs ‘mean’

Whilst it is still too early to say whether or not Mourinho should face the axe – after all, he’s one game away from clinching their first piece of silverware since 2008 – it wouldn’t hurt to consider alternatives just as long as they are genuine upgrades.

And that’s where Nagelsmann is an intriguing candidate.

The 33-year-old has been tipped to reach the heights of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, arguably two of the best managers in the Premier League right now, whilst he has drawn inspiration from the latter.

Perhaps more interestingly, it is comparisons to legendary arch-rival Arsene Wenger that could signal a new direction at Hotspur Way.

Nagelsmann has been noted to be a fan of the former Arsenal man’s work with current Gunners winger Reiss Nelson outlining the similarities between the two in an interview with Bundesliga.com.

During a loan spell under him at Hoffenheim, he was asked if there was a connection, and he replied:

“Yeah, 100 per cent. They give youth a chance like Arsenal do, bringing young talents through like Jack Wilshere. It’s the same with the boss here. He gives opportunities to young players and he has belief in them.”

But it is not only the faith in emerging prospects that makes the German so appealing. He’d certainly help alleviate one of Tottenham’s biggest problems – that leaky backline.

The revolutionary record-breaker has developed Leipzig into one of the meanest defences in the Bundesliga – indeed, no other side has conceded fewer (18) this season. Not even league leaders Bayern Munich (31), who have subsequently splashed €42.5m (£36.5m) on RB colossus Dayot Upamecano.

Known for his innovation in an attacking sense, the German outfit always remain compact defensively and have never spent over €16m (£14m) on a central defender, which will be music to Levy’s ears as it shows he can develop what he has – or at the very least, not spend bucket loads.

They are the fourth-most successful side in the Bundesliga for pressing, though they top the charts for total number of pressures per 90 (50.7), as per FBRef, which makes their impressive goals against tally all that more impressive as despite the constant work-rate, they aren’t letting the opposition into potential gaps and spaces.

This is because Leipzig are compact in the middle of the pitch, leaving the opposition with a lot of long balls to play instead, and that’s also nullified as all of their central defenders tower above 6-foot, whilst they top the division for successful aerial duels won per 90 (59.4%), via FBRef.

No side has faced fewer shots (56) across this season either, so clearly, Nagelsmann is a bit of a defensive genius too. Wenger’s invincibles had a pretty impressive and resolute defence too.

Spurs’ problems at the back are well documented. Only one other top-seven team leaked more goals last term, while this season, Mourinho has chopped and changed his options with every passing week.

Clearly isn’t able to coach the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez into being better central options, so this is where Nagelsmann could make an immediate impact, as evident above.

“I see [Nagelsmann] as a great coaching talent in all the relevant areas that a coach has to fulfil: leadership, dealing with the players and their tactical development,” said Ralph Rangnick to SPORT1, via Bundesliga.com.

Quite rightly, the Leipzig gem must be atop Levy’s shortlist should Mourinho depart in the near future. They’d be getting their very own Wenger-like leader, one capable of resolving the biggest nightmare.

AND in other news, Three Spurs stars who must buck up their ideas ahead of summer window

Rangers: Update issued on Ben Davies

Journalist Alan Nixon has recently issued an update about Rangers’ interest in Preston North End’s Ben Davies.

While Football Insider had recently stated that Rangers had made a ‘significant’ offer to sign Davies on a pre-contract basis in the summer, Nixon has claimed the complete opposite about the Preston defender and his links with a move to Ibrox.

Rangers yet to make Davies offer

Alan Nixon tweeted about Rangers’ interest in Davies when a fan asked him about the player’s situation. He revealed “there’s no Rangers pre contract offer for Davies”, despite claims from Football Insider that an offer has been made.

It has also been stated that Rangers are competing with their Old Firm rivals and English clubs for Davies’ signature.

Davies has made 16 Championship appearances for Preston this season, coming up with one assist so far. All of his appearances have come from the centre-back position this season (as per Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old is currently valued at £2.16m by Transfermarkt and he has been described as a player who is comfortable on the ball and confident in the air.

Davies could be a good signing for Rangers

With Nikola Katic injured and George Edmundson seemingly on the way out, Steven Gerrard only has three centre-back options in the team – Leon Balogun, Filip Helander and Conor Goldson.

Davies would add depth and ability to that position and his versatility – he can play either centre-back role or at left-back – would also be an extra reason why the Ibrox side would benefit from signing him.
