Archbishop Desmond Tutu will call for England’s cricketers to break their sporting ties with Zimbabwe, when he delivers the prestigious MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey lecture at Lord’s on Tuesday evening.Tutu, 76, was heavily involved in the sporting boycott of apartheid South Africa in the 1970s and 80s, and he believes that, by taking a similar stance against Robert Mugabe’s regime, a powerful message would be sent by the world that Mugabe is a “pariah”.”I would say it is a non-violent pressure that can be brought to bear,” Tutu told The Guardian on the eve of the lecture. “People will say Mugabe doesn’t play cricket but the more you make him aware that he has become a pariah the better.””I believe that a significant part of the population in Zimbabwe would say [the cricketers] should not be here, because you are lending a legitimacy and respectability to a country that is in a shambles because of one person.”Zimbabwe are currently suspended from Test status, although they remain in the frame in one-day cricket. They are scheduled to tour England in May 2009, even though the UK government has threatened not to issue visas if Mugabe is still in power. The situation for the ECB is complicated by the ICC World Twenty20 which follows later in the summer. Zimbabwe, as a full member of the ICC, would be expected to take part, and England can expect sanctions if their representatives are barred. In April, Malcolm Speed was ousted as the ICC’s chief executive after falling out with the president, Ray Mali, a staunch supporter of Zimbabwe cricket.Tutu’s lecture will be broadcast live on the MCC website (www.lords.org). His interest in cricket was nurtured by the commentaries of John Arlott on the BBC World Service, but it was its role in the defeat of apartheid that cemented the game in his affections. “Once I was bitten by the bug I stayed bit,” Tutu told The Guardian. “It is a myth to say that sports and politics do not mix.”

Dragons take pole position in chase for NUL title

Glamorgan Dragons have put themselves into a strong position in the race for the NUL title with a 103-run victory over Worcestershire Royals under lights at Sophia Gardens

George Dobell03-Sep-2002Glamorgan Dragons have put themselves into a strong position in the race for the NUL title with a 103-run victory over Worcestershire Royals under lights at Sophia Gardens. The Dragons now have a six-point lead over Royals with only two games to come, but can take nothing for granted with tough encounters with Warwickshire Bears and Kent Spitfires to come.Royals could manage just 177 in pursuit of the Dragons 280-8, with none of their ‘big three’ of Solanki, Hick or Ben Smith able to make any impression against a disciplined Dragons bowling attack, well supported by excellent fielding.Royals, desperate for a good start as they began their testing chase, soon lost Anurag Singh, driving at Andrew Davies, while David Pipe followed attempting to pull a ball far too close to him from Kasprowicz. That brought Hick in to partner Solanki. The pair could make little headway against some tight bowling, however, and Solanki perished trying to make room for an expansive off-drive against Adrian Dale. With the pressure of a run-rate pushing up beyond eight an over, the vital wicket of Hick came when the former England star drove young David Harrison to mid-on. Smith followed, attempting the sharpest of singles, but failing to beat Robert Croft’s underarm throwLeatherdale struck a defiant 53 from 44 balls, including a driven six off Croft, but he found little support, and Royals last four wickets fell for just two runs.Earlier a fine partnership between Mike Powell and Matt Maynard was the basis of a formidable Dragons total. Initially Royals had seized the initiative through Alamgir Sheriyar. The left-arm seamer trapped Croft lbw in the first over, before the in-form Ian Thomas skied a leading edge to Batty off the same bowler. But Mike Powell, not afraid to drive over the top and surely worth a look for higher honours, led the fight-back in partnership with the veteran Matthew Maynard. At first Maynard was content to play second fiddle, but he began to unleash some of his trademark cuts and pulls as the Dragons made it to the 15 over mark at 84-2.Powell stuck the dangerous Kabir Ali for successive boundaries straight down the ground, before repeating the punishment to Sheriyar. Stuart Lampitt struggled with his line and David Leatherdale with his length as Dragons looked to have a score of 300 within their sights. But Powell, attempting an optimistic single, was run out for a fine 71 (from 81 balls) having been sent back by Maynard. The pair had added 133 off 113 balls.Maynard continued to flourish. Using his feet well to the spin, and displaying his huge range of back foot shots, it was something of a shock when he well caught and bowled, one-handed, as he drove hard at the promising Gareth Batty. He had made 87 from 72 balls. The 200 was brought up in the 33rd over, but Dale soon perished, driving Leatherdale lamely to mid-off as Royals appeared to have weather the storm. But Mark Wallace showed why he is so highly though of with a brisk 21 (18 balls), including an edged pull for six off Leatherdale, before clipping the same bowler to mid-wicket where Lampitt held a fine catch above his head.Steve James used his experience to steady the ship and hit a boundaryless 43 (55 balls) before attempting too sharp a single, and some lusty blows from Mark Kasprowicz and David Harrison gave the innings a late boost.Meanwhile in the second division Sussex Sharks were back in the swim with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks at Hove.Kevin Innes took 4-26 as the Hawks subsided from 56-1 to 126 all out, with none of the batsmen progressing beyond 26.Dimitri Mascarenhas struck back at the start of the Sharks innings, dismissing Bas Zuiderent first ball and James Carpenter to reduce the hosts to 5-2, but Murray Goodwin stood firm, finishing unbeaten on 76 and adding 95 with Chris Adams, who made 30.Both the Sharks and the Hawks look destined to a place in the bottom four, however. That would mean a third round tie against first-class opposition in the third round of next year’s C&G Trophy, while their rivals will play against part-time players from the qualifying rounds.

Gil could be Nuno’s next Neto at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla…

What’s the word?

That’s according to renowned Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claims that a swap deal involving Erik Lamela is nearing completion. He tweeted:

“Paperworks stage in the next hours between Tottenham and Sevilla for Bryan Gil-Erik Lamela swap deal. It’s confirmed and done, both will move on permanent.

“Bryan Gil set to sign until June 2026 as Spurs player. €25m to Sevilla as included fee, confirmed.”

The 20-year-old gem is currently at the Olympics for his national side, Spain, so it may be a while until we see an official announcement surrounding the deal.

But Spurs’ interest should come as no surprise.

Nuno’s next Neto

New sporting director Fabio Paratici learned of Gil’s availability when trying to pursue a move for his Seville teammate, Jules Kounde, as per The Athletic.

He’s a player that will undoubtedly leave Nuno Santo excited.

As a promising left-footed winger, you could be forgiven for thinking that Gil would be a like-for-like replacement for Real Madrid loanee Gareth Bale, a player who has thrived off cutting inside on the right and firing off thunderous strikes.

Gil is said to have a “left foot made of pure gold” and has been described as a “flamboyant winger” by football scout Jacek Kulig.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

However, Nuno is quite old-school when it comes to his wide men, in the sense that he’ll deploy the left-footer on the left and the right-footer on the right.

As a result, the young Spanish prospect could draw some similarities to that of Pedro Neto, the Portuguese sensation who thrived under his fellow countryman at Wolves.

Gil and Neto played at a similar output throughout 2020/21 and had the latter been given the services of Raul Jimenez – who suffered a cruel head injury that ended his season – then you could argue that he’d have been even better.

As seen in the following graph (via Twenty3), neither are your goalscoring winger a la a Mo Salah or even a Heung-min Son but rather, they are electrifying dribblers who like to get at the full-back instead of cutting inside. A provider, of sorts.

Indeed, Gil only provided four goals and four assists across all competitions last term, but at just 20, he’s still immensely raw and fits the profile of someone that Nuno will be capable of improving tenfold. As seen with Neto and especially Adama Traore at Molineux.

The Spanish wonderkid averaged 1.7 crosses and 1.9 key passes per 90 in La Liga, via WhoScored, which suggests he’s very effective at creating chances for his teammates and that sort of output should leave Harry Kane dreaming about the mouth-watering prospect of some much-needed service.

No Spurs player averaged more than one cross per game in the Premier League last season and similarly, nobody outside of Kane and Son managed an average better than 1.1 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

Gil, who has been dubbed a “big talent” with “huge, huge potential”, could well become Nuno’s next Neto at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Whilst he’s never going to pull up Son-like numbers in terms of goals, the £27m-rated dynamo certainly going to provide Spurs’ two key talisman with plenty of chances as a “very exciting talent.”

Perhaps Spurs are finally getting that traditional left-footer that they have lacked for ever so long. What a signing this could be.

Spurs legend slams Harry Winks after dismal season - Exclusive

Graham Roberts has slammed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, insisting that he has become “Mr Conservative”.

The 25-year-old endured a terrible season under the management of Jose Mourinho, as he fell out of favour under the Portuguese.

Winks made just 10 appearances under Mourinho in the league, and completed the 90 minutes just three times.

Following the appointment of Ryan Mason, Winks did manage to work his way back into the team, playing some part in all of the final three games of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Roberts, though, was left unimpressed with his displays in the top-flight and believes that he continuously looks for the safe option, instead of trying to play the ball forward.

Indeed, he believes that it does not matter who the manager is in north London, such is the inability of Winks to affect the game in the final third.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “I would say, forget about [the new manager] with Harry Winks, I think it’s Harry Winks with Harry Winks. When Harry Winks got in the team years ago, it’s not the same Harry Winks now.

“He’s Mr Conservative. Harry Winks gets the ball, I’m watching games with people and they say ‘Harry Winks had 347 passes of the ball today’, I say ‘well, how many went forward?’

“It’s always back to the centre-half or square to a centre-half or square to another midfield player. He never, ever looks forward.”

Celtic in the race to sign Rob Atkinson

Celtic’s pre-season recruitment plans are beginning to build up a head of steam. The Hoops finally have a new manager in Ange Postecoglou and he’s been followed through the door by the signings of Liam Shaw and Joey Dawson. Now, however, is the time for the Australian to bolster Celtic’s options in the starting XI.What’s the word? The Hoops have been busy on the transfer front over the last few days, if you believe reports. They’ve begun talks with the Portuguese side Famalicao over the signing of Brazilian central defender Riccieli. However, he’s not the only centre-back on Celtic’s shortlist ahead this summer.According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, the Bhoys are interested in signing Oxford United defender Rob Atkinson in the coming months. The reporter took to Twitter on Sunday to say: “Bristol City. Getting closer to Oxford valuation for Rob Atkinson. Take around £1.6m. Celtic like him too.”Promising newsWith Kristoffer Ajer potentially heading for pastures new this summer, finding another defender will be of great importance to Postecoglou.Celtic’s defence hardly painted a picture of health last term with the Glaswegian outfit shipping 16 more goals than their fierce rivals Rangers.[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-posetcoglou-ryan-delap-wyke” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]What made things worse was a catalogue of errors throughout the campaign. Diego Laxalt and Jonjoe Kenny were liabilities towards the end of the season, while Shane Duffy was returned to Brighton like a damaged delivery after picking up an injury. All three of those players look as though they won’t be heading back to Celtic. Fortunately for supporters, they could land a more stable and dominant defender in Atkinson. He only has one year of EFL football under his belt but he was immensely impressive for Oxford United last season. The 22-year-old was so good that he ended up being named in the League One Team of the Season. His side finished last term in the play-offs but narrowly missed out to Blackpool in the semi-finals. Atkinson was a huge reason for their encouraging term, winning a colossal 6.5 aerial battles per match. That meant he won 266 aerial duels over the course of the season, 162 more than Celtic’s best performer in that statistic; Ajer. What’s also so eye-catching about Atkinson is the way he breaks up the play. The young defender produced 2.1 interceptions a game last season, more than any other player in the Hoops squad.A fee of £1.6m is minimal for a defender who looks so suited to the Scottish game. Postecoglou and Dominic McKay shouldn’t think twice when considering a move.Based on his qualities, supporters should be delighted if he comes to Parkhead, so Celtic need to get into gear and beat Bristol City to the punch.AND in other news, Imagine him & Soro: Celtic must sign “exceptional” 22 y/o who crushed Ange this year…
