Tottenham Hotspur: Noel Whelan blasts Spurs star who ‘has done nothing’ all season

Noel Whelan insists Tottenham Hotspur should sell Tanguy Ndombele this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker believes Ndombele has “done nothing” ever since he arrived in north London.

Daniel Levy has made it clear the Spurs star will not be sold in the summer, and his stance remains unchanged, even though the board feel he is attempting to force his way out of the club.

Ndombele, who is the club’s record signing, has struggled to settle down this season.

Jose Mourinho claimed he is happy with the the Frenchman’s work ethic, as the pair made the headlines for breaking government guidelines to train together during lockdown, but he hasn’t featured in the two games following the Premier League restart.

Mourinho was again forced to deny reports of a rift after he failed to make an appearance against West Ham.

Whelan believes Ndombele doesn’t have the right attitude to succeed at Spurs and suggested the board should cut their losses instead. The pundit told assistant editor Russell Edge “Look, I don’t like these sort of players, they need to be sold. He’s done nothing since he came to Tottenham, quite frankly.

“He had that debut where he scored a goal but after that, clearly, he doesn’t have the work rate that Jose Mourinho or the Premier League demands to become a special player.

“It’s different in France when you’re playing there, it’s a different style and different pace – not as good players there so you can stand out. Does he stand out in the Tottenham side in every game that he plays? Not really.

“There’s certain things that you demand and the first thing you look for is character and can you fit into a squad? You’ve just gone and seen Liverpool win the championship with a tight-knit group, they’re all friends, they all work hard, in the midfield area there’s not one that doesn’t put themselves about.

“Now he’s shown he can’t do that and with those sort of players in the side, you’re not going to challenge for the Premier League title.”

It is difficult to disagree with Whelan on this one, as Ndombele wants to leave Tottenham amid interest from Barcelona.

The Frenchman has struggled for consistency so far, as he has played 19 games in the Premier League this season, scoring 2 goals, providing 2 assists, averaging fewer than one shot and one key pass per game via WhoScored.

Clubs are facing financial pressure from the pandemic and both clubs are operating on a tight budget. Barca are reportedly only interested in a swap deal involving Nelson Semedo or Philippe Coutinho as a result.

Mourinho is eager to sign Coutinho in the summer, as he moaned about the lack of creative options in the game against Manchester United.

Spurs have been working towards sorting out a loan move for the Brazilian playmaker. The Portuguese could solve both problems by replacing Ndombele with Coutinho. While he has failed to find the form he enjoyed with Liverpool, he is still a world-class player.

Although Levy would be looking to recoup some of the costs he spent on the midfielder, Mourinho may decide to ditch the troublemaker if he continues to cause disruption.

The pair share a strained relationship, which has grown increasingly tenuous in recent weeks, and a trade may be best for everyone involved.

Newcastle fans react as Sky Sports’ Keith Downie comments on takeover

Newcastle United fans are not only growing impatient with the time it’s taking for their prospective takeover to become a reality, but also with the mixed messages that implicate it from even happening. However, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has tried to alleviate things somewhat with an encouraging claim this week…

He suggests that the takeover could happen at any time, whether that be today, tomorrow or another month and that the circumstances surrounding it all aren’t unusual, and this has sparked a reaction from some of the Magpies faithful.

It’s now been well over a month since reports first emerged claiming that Mike Ashley had agreed to sell the club for £300m to a Saudi-backed consortium, led by PCP’s Amanda Staveley and also involving the Reuben brothers amongst others.

The Sports Direct mogul has been at the helm for 13 years where he has overseen two allegations and several seasons of mediocrity so supporters are understandably desperate to see their club taken over with a new sense of financial power.

Tottenham Hotspur: Daniel Levy faces transfer battle for Pierluigi Gollini

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to plenty of big names as the transfer window draws near but no moves have materialised as of yet.

However, this may be all about to change as Tottenham are interested in Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Spurs are keen to sign the Serie A star as he looks set to leave the Gewiss Stadium in the summer.

Jose Mourinho is eager to find a keeper who will be an eventual replacement for Hugo Lloris. The club captain has arguably struggled for consistency this season as he has only kept two clean sheets in the Premier League so far.

With that in mind, Mourinho is considering a move for Gollini, who previously played for Aston Villa. In fact, the Italian started his career at Manchester United but never made a senior appearance for the Old Trafford outfit.

However, Atalanta are reportedly ready to play hardball, which could leave room for Daniel Levy to work his magic.

Indeed, it is worth remembering that, after a year of stagnant negotiations, Levy wasted no time at all and jumped on a plane to convince Luka Modric to sign for Spurs, famously telling Damien Comolli that the Croatian had signed the contract at 3am (The Independent).

The Italian outlet claims that the Nerazzurri are demanding somewhere in the region of €25m and €30m, which roughly equates to £27m, for his signature. Levy faces stiff competition from Roma as Gollini could replace Pau Lopez, who has attracted attention from a number of Premier League clubs.

Nevertheless, whether or not the Spurs chairman decides to splash the cash remains to be seen, as he has developed a reputation for penny-pinching in the past.

Leeds must avoid selecting Liam Cooper despite his comeback from injury

Leeds travel to Fulham on Saturday and they have received a big pre-match boost, with Marcelo Bielsa revealing that Liam Cooper will be involved in the matchday squad.

What’s the latest?

The Whites skipper has been as resolute as ever when he has appeared for Bielsa’s side this term, but too often he has spent time out on the treatment table, with the latest injury causing him to miss three matches.

However, he revealed he is feeling fit and is ready to challenge for a place in the side, and his manager has suggested he will have a role in the squad this weekend, though it remains to be seen if that means he will start.

He has missed out recently due to suffering a calf strain, and that should be a cause of worry considering he missed matches in October for the same reason.

Proceed with caution

With that in mind, Bielsa would be wise to ease him back into the matchday squad slowly, particularly with so many games coming up thick and fast.

To lose Cooper for any period of time would be a blow to the Whites. It doesn’t only reduce the quality of the players available, but it means there is less cover if another first-team defender gets injured or suspended.

Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?

With that in mind, even though Leeds face an accomplished side with a big goal threat in Fulham, Bielsa must be confident in the other players at his disposal and pick them ahead of the captain.

Cooper possesses valuable leadership qualities which make him a popular figure amongst fans, and though the lack of such attributes contributed to their implosion against Cardiff last time out which saw them squander a three-goal lead, the two defenders who started that match should retain their place in the side.

Ben White and Gaetano Berardi have barely put a foot wrong since the skipper was out and therefore neither deserves to be dropped, especially as they have kept two clean sheets in three games without him.

They should be rewarded for their recent form, while Cooper’s delicate injury situation clearly needs to be managed carefully. The worst-case scenario being that Leeds are without their captain for a large chunk of the season.

The last thing the Whites need is for Cooper to aggravate his injury further and there is a risk of that happening if he is drafted back in so soon. Bielsa needs to be brave and wait before introducing his skipper back into the team.

Meanwhile, fans have been reacting to the news that Adam Forshaw still isn’t fit enough to return, which has raised some disgruntled voices.

Manchester City fans baffled with Claudio Bravo’s red card against Atalanta

Manchester City fans are confused with the red card shown to Claudio Bravo against Atalanta in midweek. The Chile international came on for the second half after Ederson went off injured, however, the Chile international was dismissed after just 35 minutes.

This bizarre sequence of events ended up forcing in Kyle Walker of all people between the sticks, and the right-back ended up seeing the 1-1 draw out.

Although, City fans are fuming with the decision to send off Bravo, with pictures showing minimal contact from the Chilean.

The keeper himself tweeted an angle of the foul which Bravo has questioned along with the fans. One supporter said “it’s a travesty”, as other supporters why VAR wasn’t consulted in the midst of all this.

This is, however, not the first time in which Bravo has been sent off for City in Europe. The 36-year-old was dismissed against his old club Barcelona back in 2016 by seeing a straight red card.

As a result of his recent dismissal, Bravo will now miss the next European game.

City are on 10 points after the four matches and their place in the knockout rounds is on the brink of being secured.

Here’s what some fans have had to say about the controversial red card…

Barcelona fans react to Marcelo Gallardo’s rumoured appointment

Barcelona are certainly going through some tough times.

The Catalan giants recently dropped points against Levante in a 3-1 defeat in La Liga, and followed it up with a goalless draw with Slavia Prague at the Camp Nou in the Champions League in midweek.

Needless to say, those kinds of performances don’t really instil much confidence into the fans’ hearts.

But one thing that seemingly makes them happy these days are rumours and updates regarding the potential departure of their current manager, Ernesto Valverde.

According to Claudio Borghi, who spoke to CDF (via TNT sports), Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate’s boss, could be coming in to replace Valverde this winter.

Upon hearing this update, many Cules are actually hoping the story is true and want to see Gallardo at the helm of their club.

Others are a bit sceptical and are afraid that this might rumour not be real.

Liverpool’s Naby Keita sent clear message to Jurgen Klopp with Genk performance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Liverpool got their first win away from home during the group stages of the Champions League for almost two years after a 4-1 win against Genk on Wednesday.

After a frustrating first 45 minutes, the Reds were unable to capitalise and seize the initiative set by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s early goal as they went in at half-time 1-0 up.

But as it so happens, the Reds always find a way to get over the line and can win even while playing poorly. When push comes to shove, you can count on Liverpool.

Opponents Genk had a poor start to the Champions League with only one point from their first two games and Jurgen Klopp looked to expose that with his team’s setup.

He made a handful of changes to the side that drew with Manchester United, most notably in the midfield trio. However, one Reds’ player made a big statement after his eye-catching performance at the Luminus Stadium.

Naby Keita, who earns £120,000-a-week according to Spotrac, is currently into his second season at Anfield after his £48m move from RB Leipzig in 2018 and is pleading his case to the boss to cement a regular first-team place in the German’s team.

If ever there was a clear message to bring to the table, the Guinean midfielder certainly produced the goods and was a breath of fresh air with his composure and willingness to move forward with the ball.

As a result, he recorded three successful dribbles out of four attempted and also had a shot blocked in the first half. His confidence and proactive approach to the game was also combined with his self-control as he accumulated a passing accuracy of 93% with 138 touches on the night.

Equally, Keita was very eager from a defensive point of view which illustrates his high work rate and determination to get on the ball and make things happen for the Reds. He clocked up three tackles, won eight of his ground duels out of 13 and was not dribbled past throughout the 90 minutes.

The Guinean playmaker has embraced the opportunity that Klopp has given to him with that performance, which has resulted in the manager having a midfield headache that every coach wants to have.

Birmingham fans lay into Lee Camp after another mistake

Lee Camp. Where does one even begin? The experienced goalkeeper has had a bit of a messy season and that’s putting it lightly.

Errors seem to follow him all over the place and that was seen in rather embarrassing circumstances against Wigan at the start of the month.

Despite the international break giving him time to reflect it doesn’t appear as though his confidence has been boosted.

The goalkeeper was again at fault versus Leeds. Kalvin Phillips’ goalbound shot managed to squirm underneath him and as a result, Birmingham lost.

Blues fans were particularly disappointed with his display with many leaving rather angry comments on Twitter.

One called him a clown, saying he needed to get out of the club while another urged him to quit entirely.

The 35-year-old was branded a liability as a further supporter said he had popadom hands.

Camp has played in all 12 games this term but whether that streak continues remains to be seen.

He is costing his side points and surely there is only so long Pep Clotet can remain with him between the sticks.

Here’s the best of the discussion.

Manchester City fans react to Pep Guardiola’s Champions League admission

Manchester City fans have been debating their Champions League ambitions after Pep Guardiola stated his side are not ready to win the competition just yet.

The Spaniard told reporters: “People say about the Champions League. We still are not ready. We create a lot, we don’t concede but can improve.

“We’ve scored a lot over the last two seasons and I don’t have doubts about that but we have to keep going and work on that.”

Since City’s takeover in 2008, the club has gone onto become the most successful English side of the last decade, winning three Premier League titles as part of a ten trophy haul.

However, the one piece of silverware that still evades them is the Champions League.

The Citizens have not yet reached a European final in this time, with a semi-final defeat to holders Real Madrid in 2016 proving to be their best attempt so far.

However, Guardiola is no stranger to success in the competition, winning 74 matches in 112 fixtures as a manager with three different clubs. He also won the trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, beating City’s rivals Manchester United on both occasions.

The Citizens will resume their quest for Champions League glory tomorrow, as they host Atalanta at the Etihad Stadium. The Premier League champions can make it three out of three with a win over the Italian side in Group C.

Guardiola’s comments have sparked a mixed reaction on social media. Some fans were inclined to agree with his sentiments, but others were less receptive and suggested his attitude could cost them in their pursuit of world football’s most coveted prize.
