Smith happy with South Africa improvement

South Africa have been forced to experiment this series, with Jacques Kallis’s calm head missing from the top of the order, and captain Graeme Smith unable to rely on the menace of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel with the ball due to a slew of injuries

Liam Brickhill at Bloemfontein15-Oct-2010South Africa have been forced to experiment this series, with Jacques Kallis’s calm head missing from the top of the order, and captain Graeme Smith unable to rely on the menace of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel with the ball due to a slew of injuries. But an authoritative 64-run win in the first one-day international against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein has eased worries about South Africa’s second string, and Smith urged the newer members of the squad to make the most of their opportunities and “make those positions their own”.”You’ve got two guys [Morkel and Steyn]”, explained Smith. “One has bounce and he can hit 145 km/h, the other has swing and can hit 140 to 150km/h. They are wonderful assets to have. At the moment we don’t have that, but it’s an opportunity for guys to still get their skills right.””Some of these guys are going to be performing in the next games, and when those guys are back and fit these guys will be looking to stake claims, so it’s important that they show their worth.”While Smith made sure to mention David Miller’s expressive half-century – which came from just 30 balls and included five fours and two enormous sixes – he held special praise for the stellar knock from Colin Ingram. He became the first South African – and the sixth batsman overall – to strike a century on ODI debut and his aggressive 124 boosted South Africa’s total well out of reach.”I think he [Ingram] was pretty nervous walking in today, but he remained calm and stuck to his game plan. He’s done a lot of work at domestic level, and he was able to bring that here. He trusted himself out there today and that’s an important mindset to have. If you put the work in, it’s about going in there and allowing yourself to trust yourself, and I think that was quite evident today.”Smith confirmed that South Africa will be without Morkel’s services at least until the final game of the series in Benoni on Friday and suggested there were times at which South Africa’s replacement bowlers let Zimbabwe’s batsmen dictate terms. Nevertheless he insisted that the bowlers had, on the whole, progressed from their unconvincing performances in the Twenty20s.”It’s always difficult to rate a performance like that,” said Smith. “We put 350 on the board, but it was a very quick outfield and a beautiful batting wicket. I think in patches with the ball we were very good. There were times we drifted a little bit. Maybe the first ten overs was an area we were a little bit loose.”We let them get away a bit but from then until about the 35th or 36th over I thought we were very good. From there, once you realise a team is not being competitive anymore it makes it a little bit tough in the cold like that. There are always things to improve on, but compared to Sunday’s bowling performance, it was a lot better.”

Time is right to blood new players – Waqar

Waqar Younis has said the damage caused to the team by the turbulence of the last few months was the worst Pakistan had suffered in the last few decades

Cricinfo staff09-Jun-2010Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has said the damage caused to the team by the turbulence of the last few months was the worst Pakistan had suffered in the last few decades. Waqar, however, hoped the influx of young talent into the team for the Asia Cup would help the side move on and be ready for future competitions.”I think what has happened in the last three months, it has damaged the team more than it did in the last 25-30 years,” Waqar told reporters in Lahore. “Now is the time to look forward and see how we could perform well and win international matches.”The recent problems in the Pakistan team surfaced after their winless tour to Australia, following which the PCB conducted an inquiry and punished several players. Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan were banned indefinitely, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for a year, while Shahid Afridi, Kamaran and Umar Akmal were fined. No reasons for the penalties were forthcoming from the PCB at the time, but a leaked video later revealed the extent of discord within the team. However, all the players apart from Yousuf, who retired from international cricket, appealed against their punishments. The bans on Malik and Younis were overturned by an arbitrator; Afridi’s fine was removed while those of the Akmals were reduced. The selectors then included Malik, who had been slated for his attitude during the inquiry, in the squad for the Asia Cup, and recalled injury-prone fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar. The 15-man list, though, also includes three uncapped batsmen in Shahzaib Hasan, Umar Amin and Asad Shafiq, and Waqar predicted a bright future for them.”They [experienced players] are great players,” Waqar said. “But I think it’s the right time to indulge new players, and I believe Umar and Asad are no doubt very talented and have a bright future. We have not won anything significant over the last two-three years, but with youngsters in the side we have a hope to get back on a winning track.”Waqar also said he wouldn’t be rushing Shoaib, who last played for Pakistan in May 2009, back into action. “He is fit, but I know it’s not easy to make a comeback because I have gone through this when I used to play international cricket,” Waqar said.Pakistan depart for Sri Lanka on Saturday and open their campaign against the hosts on June 15.

Trinity Rodman, Melchie Dumornay and the NXGN wonderkids set to light up the 2023 Women's World Cup

There will be some top young talent on show in Australia and New Zealand, and here are the names you should keep an eye on…

This year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand promises to be the biggest yet. More eyes will be on the tournament than ever before as the game continues to grow, making it an incredible stage for a young player to announce themselves on.

What's particularly exciting this summer is that so many of the best up-and-comers that will be on show are already key players in their national teams.

Four years ago, we saw players like Lena Oberdorf, the women's NXGN 2020 winner, Giulia Gwinn, winner of the Young Player of the Tournament award, and Mallory Swanson, now a star name for the U.S. women's national team, announce themselves to the world.

There are plenty of excellent youngsters who appear primed to follow in their footsteps and shine in the 2023 edition.

So, who should you be keeping an eye on? Let NXGN introduce you to some of the stand-out names, born in 2002 or later…

GettyHanna Bennison (Sweden)

The NXGN 2021 winner, Bennison has been an integral member of Sweden's senior national team for a while now.

She made her debut in late 2019, aged 17, and has since been to an Olympic Games and a Euros. She'll complete the set with a World Cup this summer.

The Everton midfielder moved to England from Rosengard in the summer of 2021 and has become a key part of what head coach Brian Sorensen is trying to do. Bennison's next task is to become a regular in her country's starting XI, though she has proven a very important substitute for Peter Gerhardsson.

AdvertisementGettyJule Brand (Germany)

After starting the Euros final last year at the age of 19, Brand will follow that up with a trip to her first senior World Cup this summer. In the 12 months between the two milestones, she's only grown as a player.

The winger completed a move to Wolfsburg before the 2022-23 season, and the environment the two-time European champions can provide, with its competitiveness and the influence of so many winners, is only benefiting her.

GettyJody Brown (Jamaica)

Brown was only 16 years old when she made her senior international debut and, later that year, she was the youngest player on show at the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship.

Still in college, at Florida State University, the young forward has an excellent goalscoring record for her country and has already been to a World Cup, when the Reggae Girlz qualified in 2019. She's now set for another, at the age of 21.

GettyEsmee Brugts (Netherlands)

A member of the Netherlands' Euro 2022 squad, it was Brugts' goal that actually secured her country's place at this summer's World Cup. Had the teenager not netted in the 93rd minute to beat Iceland in September, the 2019 runners-up would've had to go through further qualifying and might not have made it.

That is a moment that perfectly illustrates the impact the PSV forward has been having on her national team already, and she will not just be a great impact sub in Australia and New Zealand, but also a player competing for a starting berth.

Amir's BBL hopes dashed by Thunder no-go

Mohammad Amir’s possible appearance in the Big Bash League didn’t materialise as Sydney Thunder weren’t keen on signing the fast bowler. Amir’s London-based agents contacted Thunder to find out their interest in Amir, but the franchise’s general manager Nick Cummins said they were looking for an allrounder rather than a bowler to join Jacques Kallis as their second International player.”We approached the Sydney Thunder and at that point we thought they still had a spot left for a similar type of player,” Simon Auteri, whose company Insignia Sports International represents Amir, was quoted as saying in the . “With the World Twenty20 coming up early next year we thought it might have been a decent fit.””We appreciate with a lot of these teams abroad it will probably be a tough sell especially until he gets back playing at the highest level. He’s back fully playing and he wants to play abroad, and he’s still so young. We think that he does deserve another go and that’s what we’re trying to do.”Amir, banned for five years in 2010 for his role in spot-fixing, was allowed an early return to domestic cricket in January after he adhered to criteria stipulated by the new anti-corruption code. He picked up three wickets in a Grade-2 game, his first competitive fixture since 2010. Amir also turned up for Rawalpindi Rams in the Super 8 T20 Cup.

Never had a problem with Pietersen – Stewart

Kevin Pietersen may have been deemed “disengaged” by the England management, but at Surrey he is viewed as an ideal role-model for young players.Only a few weeks after the ECB hinted that Pietersen was not seen as a “positive dressing room influence,” Surrey have made it clear that they view him quite differently by re-signing him for the 2015 season.Underlining his commitment to regaining a place in the England side, Pietersen has negotiated his release from his IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad and announced that he will donate all his wages from his Surrey deal to his charity, the Kevin Pietersen Foundation.Pietersen has not, at this stage, signed to play anything other than first-class cricket for the club and is still scheduled to play in the Caribbean Premier League from the third week of June. All that could change, however, depending on what else happens in the next few weeks. He is likely to make his first appearance of the season against Oxford MCCU in the Parks on April 12, with his first Championship match of the season coming on April 19 against Glamorgan in Cardiff.”We’ve never had a problem with him,” Alec Stewart, the Surrey director of cricket, said. “If we had ever had a problem with him, we wouldn’t be welcoming him back. I have a relationship with him as does Graham Ford, our first team coach, who has worked with him since the age of nine.”Yes, we need good cricketers, but we also need good people. We are trying to bring through young players who learn and do the right thing. Jason Roy, for example has learnt so much from KP. He has huge respect, looks up to him and would like to emulate what KP has done as a player.”We’ve gained a very ambitious, very good player. That’s why we’ve brought him back in.”While Pietersen might, in the past, have struggled to motivate himself for the prospect of a Division Two promotion challenge, the incentive of a potential England recall will, in Stewart’s opinion, focus his mind. Pietersen already averages 77.16 in the nine first-class games he has played for the club with some suggesting that, given good luck with the weather, he could become the first man this century – and only the ninth in all – to register 1,000 runs before the end of May.”It’s a good story for us,” Stewart said. “We want to be successful and we want to win things here, but we also have a duty to produce players for England.”Kevin is eligible to play for England. He has set his sights on the Ashes and, if he scores runs for us, then the selectors will have to make a decision.”Stewart went on to suggest that, should Pietersen return to the England team, it might constitute one of the “biggest comeback” stories in sport.”If he ends up playing for England again it is going to be one of the biggest comebacks in sport,” Stewart said. “Just coming back to play for Surrey isn’t right up there, but for England it would be.”Going back to the times of Kerry Packer, players got banned. When they went to play in South Africa they got banned and they came back. So it isn’t as though someone who has been slung out has never come back.”There are examples there of the ECB, going back on decisions. Will they have to this time because of what he is doing? We’ll see.”It is sad that one of England’s finest players has been at loggerheads with the ECB. Both parties are at fault. He has been very good for England and England have been very good for him.”But we got to a situation where they sacked him and that is not right because somehow they have to find some common ground. I am not saying pick him but they have to find common ground where a relationship is recreated whether it is for now or for in 20 years time when, for example, they suddenly might want a dinner for the 2005 Ashes winners. Why would you not want one of the main contributors being there rather than being frightened to invite him?”And we don’t want everyone exactly the same. It would be pretty dull.”Lycamobile supports ‘Chance to Shine Street’ as part of its mission to bring communities together. www.lycamobile.com

O clube mineiro apareceu 5 vezes, já o time gaúcho quatro.

Agar added to squad for Sydney Test

Ashton Agar has been added to Australia’s squad for the fourth Test in Sydney as the selectors contemplate a twin spin attack with Nathan Lyon

Brydon Coverdale30-Dec-2014Ashton Agar has been added to Australia’s squad for the fourth Test in Sydney as the selectors contemplate a twin spin attack with Nathan Lyon. Agar has not played for Australia since the first two Tests of last year’s Ashes series in England, when he made a spectacular debut making 98 batting at No.11, but struggled to have any significant impact with the ball. The move is surprising given Agar’s first-class form – he has taken only seven wickets at 45.14 this summer in the Sheffield Shield and has 62 in his career at 44.00. However, he has impressed during the first few BBL games for the Perth Scorchers this season and Ricky Ponting said this week he considered Agar a bolter for the World Cup squad.Steve O’Keefe, who made his Test debut against Pakistan in Dubai in October, was unavailable due to a calf injury. O’Keefe has taken nine Sheffield Shield wickets at 28.44 this season, including a five-wicket haul in Adelaide in his first match back from the UAE.If Agar was to play at the SCG, it would need to be in tandem with Lyon, who bowled Australia to victory in the first Test at Adelaide Oval this month. Captain Steven Smith said Agar had improved his bowling since the Ashes last year, when he played as the sole spinner and Lyon was axed.”I think he’s bowling very well at the moment,” Smith said. “He’s a good addition to the squad. We’ll see how the wicket is in Sydney when we get there and we’ll go from there.”We’ll just have to wait and see what the wicket is like. We’re not too sure what it will be like. Last year it had a bit of grass on it and previously it’s been quite a spin friendly wicket. So I think it’s more of a see how the wicket is and if he’s needed then he can play.”The addition of Agar is the only change to Australia’s squad from the side that secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a draw in Melbourne.

Pakistan will play two Tests and three ODIs in Sri Lanka in August, officials from both boards have confirmed. No tour dates have yet been set in stone, but Pakistan is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka in late July for a tour match before the internationals begin early in the following month. For Sri Lanka, the tour will be the third in quick succession, following an away tour of England, and the home series against South Africa. Neither the Pakistan series nor the South Africa tour had been prescribed for 2014 by the Future Tours Programme – though the Tests against South Africa had been deferred from last year.Pakistan were facing a six-month drought ahead of their next international fixtures after the World T20. But the PCB managed to strike up a quick deal with Sri Lanka Cricket on the sidelines of the ICC meeting in Dubai to narrow the gap. The series will kick off a busy season for them, with full series’ with Australia and New Zealand shortly after in the UAE.With these two Tests, both Sri Lanka and Pakistan will bring their 2014 tally to nine Tests, provided all matches are played as scheduled. It will also be the second time the teams have squared off in a bilateral series in eight months, after Sri Lanka played three Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s in the UAE in December and January. They had also played each other in two Asia Cup fixtures. The teams had shared the Test series in the UAE, while Sri Lanka had won their previous Test series in Sri Lanka 1-0.Pakistan have played Sri Lanka five series in the past five years with home and away series in 2009, followed by Pakistan hosting Sri Lanka in 2011 and touring Sri Lanka in 2012.
