O Fluminense volta a campo na próxima quarta-feira (3), às 15h, para medir forças com o Vasco, nas Laranjeiras.

Inside Mohamed Salah's rejuvenation: How Sergio Ramos incident, advice from Arsene Wenger and chess shaped Liverpool star's renaissance

The Egyptian is a role model to team-mates for his dedication to fitness and nutrition and it is little wonder fans are desperate for him to stay

Say the names Real Madrid and Mohamed Salah to any football fan and one image races to the front of the mind: that of the Liverpool forward being hauled to the floor by Sergio Ramos in the 2018 Champions League final and writhing in pain from a dislocated shoulder. The short and long-term ramifications were huge. It was 0-0 when Ramos pulled what Jurgen Klopp described as “a wrestling move” on Salah and forced him off in the 31st minute, paving the way for Madrid to go on and win the final 3-1.

Salah was left with physical and emotional scars. It torpedoed his preparations for the World Cup with Egypt as he missed the first game against Uruguay, later confessing he "cried on the bus and on the toilet" before that game. Although he scored in the other two games against Saudi Arabia and Russia, he was far from the peak of his powers as his side limped out of the tournament at the first hurdle, having lost all three group-stage matches. Salah later called it "the worst thing to happen to a player", and when Madrid and Liverpool were paired in the 2022 Champions League final, the Egyptian wrote on Twitter: "We have a score to settle".

Salah has not been able to settle that score. Liverpool lost that final too, and have been beaten by Madrid in five of the six games played since the Egyptian has been with the Reds, with an aggregate score of four to 13.

Wednesday's game at Anfield, however, is the perfect occasion for the Reds and the red-hot Salah to at last exact revenge and beat European football's aristocrats. Liverpool are top of the Premier League table and led the Champions League standings after four rounds too, having won 16 out of 18 games in a record-breaking start to the campaign under new boss Arne Slot.

Whatever happens on Wednesday will not erase the memory of what happened in Kyiv. The final had a lasting effect on Salah, and for all the misery it caused him, it has made him the man he is today: the best player in the Premier League once again, in the best shape of his life and with Liverpool fans urging the club to do whatever it takes to tie him to a new contract and keep him.

    Fuelled by Kyiv

The wrangle with Ramos made Salah think seriously about his physical shape and turned him into the outstanding physical specimen he is today, the perfect picture of health and an unbelievable footballer who has already directly contributed to 22 goals this season.

According to sources, Salah went away after Kyiv and made a vow to himself that he was going to come back and never limp off or kicked out of a game in that way. The clash accelerated a certain kind of training from the forward, who decided to strengthen his upper body and his joints. He was in good shape when he came to Liverpool, but there's no doubt that in the last three, four or five years, he's gone up several levels in terms of physique. Being forced off early in the biggest game of his career and then having to miss half of the World Cup is believed to have played a big part in his obsession with being stronger and more well built. "Everything happens for a reason, I believe, and you have to deal with it," Salah told in 2022.

To get an idea of how much Salah has bulked up in the last few years, look at the difference in his physique between when he first ripped his shirt off to celebrate a goal at Southampton in April 2019, and when he did the same after burying his penalty in the 3-2 win on Sunday. His shoulders are broader, and his abdominal muscles are bigger and more pronounced.

    Everything linked to performance

Some players joke about Salah having his shirt off all the time, but there is a deep respect for his professionalism. The Egyptian is always the first player to arrive at Liverpool’s AXA training ground, often reporting two hours before a group session to either go to the gym, do yoga, have an ice bath or do pre-activation.

The forward has become a role model to many players, past and present, when it comes to nutrition and diet. In the canteen, both experienced players and youngsters will ask the staff what Salah ate and then order the same. They will also look to mimic his fitness routines.

Salah has been described as "absolutely obsessed with training and fitness", with everything he does linked to his performance, be it to eke out an extra year in his career, or an extra 10 goals in a season. The forward has spoken of being inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still breaking records at the age of 39, and Francesco Totti, who kept going until he was 40.

Salah said earlier this month: "Cristiano was also the one when I started playing in Europe more, you see the way he dedicated everything to football is insane, the way he looks after himself. You can see everything, his numbers. But these guys I looked at when I was young and I just wished to play one game with them, or to be like them one day. I had a good opportunity to play with Totti and I played with him for two years in Rome. It was an incredible time, I just loved it."

Salah is also described as being a big voice in the dressing room, a loud and upbeat character, not a brooding superstar who keeps to himself.

    Self-help gurus and chess

As well as taking the physical side of the game deadly seriously, Salah believes in mental training. He is an avid chess player, a passion he shares with Premier League coaches Pep Guardiola and Enzo Maresca. It means he is always switched on and is ahead of the game; the fact his brain is always engaged has helped his evolution.

When he arrived at Liverpool, he was seen as a dribbler above all and then he became a poacher, scoring a then-Premier League record 32 goals in his debut season while contributing 10 assists. He has become even more creative in the last few years, setting up 35 league goals in his last seasons. This season, Salah already has 10 assists in all competitions in addition to his 12 goals. He has also worked more on creating goals with the outside of his foot, and more recently improving his shooting with his right foot.

Salah's quest to always improve can be seen in how he studies success coaches like Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar and Napoleon Hill. There is a lot of cynicism about self-help gurus, but for Salah it has worked. He also sought the advice of someone with more relevant experience…

'Great players stay in the game'

Arsene Wenger visited Liverpool's old Melwood training ground after he had left Arsenal, and Salah asked him what separated the great players from the very good players. Wenger told him, 'great players stay in the game right to the end. Even if a game is not going their way, even if they're having a bad day, the great players will still be there until the final whistle.'

Salah has taken that advice on board: his last five goals in the Premier League have been scored in the final third of matches. Three of them have come in the last 10 minutes and made a huge difference to the scoreline: the equaliser at Arsenal, the clinching second goal against Aston Villa and the winner at Southampton. The things he does to engage his brain off the pitch, to test his concentration, have surely helped.

"I know there are some games I don't have the momentum, but I'm always focused in the game to finish stuff," Salah said in a club interview with Andy Robertson and Alisson this month. "I always find the momentum. I'm not always very good in the game, it's normal, but I always try to find a way to change a game. Some players don't accept the feeling and keep fighting it, but if you accept it, it's nothing. It's more your imagination. It's ok to feel that way, It's OK to have a bad game, but the most important thing is to stay in the game and try to make a difference."

That attitude explains why Salah is so rarely substituted, even when it does not appear to be his day. This season he has only been taken off three times before the 90th minute, and only when Liverpool were already winning.

England players could miss New Zealand Tests to play IPL knockouts

South African players likely to miss start of season for white-ball series vs Pakistan

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer could miss England’s Test series against New Zealand•BCCI

England’s leading multi-format cricketers, including Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler, could be forced to miss the two-Test series against New Zealand in June, due to a clash with the knock-out phases of this year’s IPL.The trio, all of whom play for Rajasthan Royals, are the most prominent IPL players in England’s Test set-up, although Chris Woakes (Delhi Capitals), Sam Curran (Chennai Super Kings) and Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad) could also be affected if their respective franchises reach the final four of the competition.Mark Wood is another potential absentee, if he gets picked up in Thursday’s IPL player auction, as is Moeen Ali, who was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore at the end of last season, and whose absence from the final two Tests of the ongoing India tour is due, in part, to the prospect of two further months away from home if he is signed by another franchise.Currently, the IPL has yet to announce either the dates for this year’s tournament, or the venue, but it is likely to be held in India, starting around April 10 through to the first week of June. That would have implications for England’s build-up to their two-Test series against New Zealand, which is scheduled between June 2-14 and is not a part of the World Test Championship, having been added to the ECB’s summer schedule in mitigation for their likely absence from the WTC final, which is scheduled for June 18-22.Related

On Tuesday, the IPL sent out an email to the franchises, seen by ESPNcricinfo, listing out the availability of players from top countries. Along with those from Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland, England players were also listed to be fully available for the IPL, but with a caveat.”In the event of ECB Selectors wishing to select a player for the 1st Test v New Zealand whose franchise has made it through to the knockout stages of the Tournament, but who is not featuring in the starting XI, the relevant franchise is requested to release such player early so that they can participate in the Test Match,” the IPL email read. The ECB has adopted a more flexible attitude to the IPL in recent years, with the tournament’s high intensity and quality being credited as significant factors in England’s recent rise in white-ball standards, culminating in their World Cup victory in 2019.To date, no ECB centrally-contracted player has missed a Test match to take part in the IPL, despite frequent clashes with the English summer schedule in the early years of the tournament. However, the ECB’s rest-and-rotation policy for the ongoing tours of Sri Lanka and India has been designed to factor in the prospect of IPL involvement for their key players, particularly with the T20 World Cup due to be staged in India at the end of the year.Stokes and Archer both missed England’s two Tests in Sri Lanka in January, while Bairstow, Curran and Wood have been on leave in the UK during the Chennai leg of the India tour.South African players’ availability unclearSome of South Africa’s IPL players could also be impacted by the white-ball series against Pakistan at home in April. With the series scheduled between April 2-16, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, Delhi Capitals’ prominent pace partnership, are among those who are set to miss the opening few weeks of the tournament, along with Quinton de Kock (Mumbai Indians) and Faf du Plessis (Chennai Super Kings).Cricket South Africa is yet to confirm the window that South African players will be available for in the IPL. But that would not have an impact on the likes of allrounder Chris Morris, who is likely to be one of the players to ignite a bidding war once again. Morris was one of the most expensive buys at the 2020 auction, after being bought by the Royal Challengers for INR 10 crore ($1.4 million USD approximately), but does not hold a central contract with the national team.Lesser availability could impact Shakib, MustafizurThere are no such issues concerning Australia and New Zealand players. Cricket Australia has confirmed that it will issue No-Objection Certificates to all its players from April 1 for the entire IPL, including for those that would otherwise be playing in the Sheffield Shield, while New Zealand Cricket has also made its players available for the entire tournament.Players from South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, however, will not be fully available. While Sri Lanka Cricket are yet to confirm dates, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has said that “any players selected will be unavailable from May 19 or will leave before if any other series is scheduled during IPL window.”That could impact the prospects of the Bangladesh duo, Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman, who are understood to have attracted interest from a few franchises in the lead-up to the auction.

Imagine him & Williams: Arsenal a leading contender to sign £100m+ striker

The transfer window has been open for just over two weeks now, and after announcing the signing of Lucas Nygaard last week, Arsenal are on the lookout for their next addition.

The Premier League runners-up were thrilling to watch at times last season, but a lack of cutting-edge midway through the year saw them end the campaign empty-handed. So it's unsurprising that the majority of players they have been linked to in the last few weeks have been attackers.

Be that Benjamin Sesko last month, Viktor Gyokeres in recent weeks or Spain's rapid winger Nico Williams most recently, it's clear the North Londoners are after more firepower this summer.

However, the latest star touted for a move to the Emirates might just be the most exciting forward of the lot and someone who would look incredible alongside Williams.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a report from Spain, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Napoli's star striker, Victor Osimhen, who is expected to leave Italy this summer.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

The report claims that the Nigerian superstar's most likely destination is the Premier League, and while 'several clubs' are willing to make a bid for his services, the Gunners and Chelsea remain his leading suitors.

The Neapolitans are still holding out for a team to pay his €120m release clause, which is around £102m, but there is a real chance that the fee could be reduced in negotiations.

victor-osimhen-transfer-gossip-napoli-victor-osimhen-harry-kane-postecoglou

It would be an expensive deal to get over the line regardless, but if Arsenal want to end their two-decade title drought next season, paying for Osimhen may be the way to do that – and a partnership between him and Williams could be a sight to behold.

Why Osimhen would be a great signing and teammate for Williams

So, the main reason that Arsenal and many other clubs want to sign the "Nigerian nightmare", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is quite simple: he's a goalscoring machine.

Despite enduring something of a down season last year, the £209k-per-week poacher still scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 32 appearances. During the campaign prior, he found the back of the net a staggering 31 times in 39 appearances while also providing five assists for good measure.

In contrast, Kai Havertz has scored 23 goals and provided eight assists in 98 appearances over the last two seasons, while Gabriel Jesus has scored 19 goals and provided 15 assists in 69 games across the same period.

This incredible ability to put the ball in the back of the net would surely see the creative numbers of players like Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka explode in North London, and if Edu and Co can add Williams into the mix, there might not be a defence in the league capable of stopping the Gunners' attack.

The main reason the Spaniard would be such an incredible partner for the "world-class" Napoli star, as dubbed by managerial icon José Mourinho, is the fact he racked up a frankly absurd 19 assists in 37 appearances last season to go with his eight goals, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.37 games for Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

The idea of Osimhen having that level of service to his left and Saka to his right – who provided 14 assists in 47 games last season – should excite Arteta.

Therefore, if the club has the chance to sign the Nigerian superstar this summer, they should take it, and if they can bring in Williams as well, then the Gunners may well be champions this time next year.

Sourav Ganguly says Australia tour on; positive about India players' families allowed on tour

“Still in discussions how to get the bio part and medical parts stronger,” he says

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Oct-2020The BCCI is yet to send a formal approval to Cricket Australia on the schedule for India’s upcoming tour of Australia, but the Indian board president Sourav Ganguly has pointed out that Indian team will be travelling to Sydney immediately after the IPL which will finish on November 10. Sydney will be India’s first destination, where they will contest the ODI and T20I series against Australia. The white-ball segment, featuring three ODIs and as many T20Is, will be followed by the four-Test series, starting with the pink-ball match in Adelaide from December 17.Both CA and BCCI have engaged in multiple meetings and discussions in the past several months, with the Covid-19 pandemic imposing severe restrictions on the travel arrangements. One of the BCCI’s conditions was that it wanted the Indian players to train while serving the mandatory two-week quarantine period upon reaching Australia. However, some of the state governments in Australia did not want to relax the guidelines owing to public health safety until the New South Wales government recently agreed to allow the teams to train while in quarantine.”So far it (the tour) is [going] ahead,” Ganguly told the on Monday. “The initial part will be in Sydney. We are still in discussions how to get the bio part and medical parts stronger, because it’s a long tour but I am told Australia is Covid-free at the moment, there aren’t many cases.”ALSO READ: Victoria Premier ‘very confident’ over Boxing Day crowd at MCGGanguly also said the BCCI was confident that players’ families will be allowed to be accommodated in the biosecure bubble. Barring Indian support staff and the two Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari, the rest of the players have been in the UAE for the IPL since the third week of August. Most players have been living in the IPL bubble without their families and with another long tour in Australia, Ganguly said the BCCI had requested CA to accordingly allow them to join the tour. Entry of foreign nationals into Australia is the responsibility of the federal government – although individual states had to give approval to be the first port of entry – as New South Wales has done.Ganguly, though, sounded positive about the families being allowed on the tour. “I don’t see a reason why the families won’t be allowed to come. The Australian cricket board is trying to accommodate the families. It should be okay.”However, he did not want to speculate on the India captain Virat Kohli potentially missing out one out of the two Tests – in Sydney and Brisbane – in the new year, as he and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child. “This is a personal question. I don’t like to comment and I have not asked him,” Ganguly said.

IPL 2020 scenarios: Where do Kings XI and Sunrisers stand after the KKR vs Capitals result?

Kings XI Punjab – Played 10, Points 8
Sunrisers Hyderabad – Played 10, Points 8
The Kolkata Knight Riders’ convincing win against the Delhi Capitals has put more pressure on both the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Kings XI Punjab, who play the second game of the Saturday double-header. The winner of this game can get up to 16 points at best, but even that might not be enough to qualify for the playoffs.Currently, both teams are identically placed with eight points from 10 games. The Sunrisers have a slightly better net run rate, but they have tougher games coming up, against each of the three top teams on the points table. Also, two of those matches, against batting powerhouses Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers, are in Sharjah, which might not suit the Sunrisers’ strengths. In their only previous game at that venue, against the Mumbai Indians, they conceded 208 and lost by 34 runs. Given that they have three tough games coming up, the Sunrisers might be worse placed than the Kings XI if they lose today, though in either case the team losing this game will have to depend on other results – and probably net run rates – to go through. The Kings XI have relatively easier assignments coming up – their last two matches are against the bottom-placed Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings – but they will still want a win to give themselves the best chance of qualifying.

The Liverpool boss stressed that if his side are to close the gap on the champions, they will have to improve their points tally on the road from last season. The Reds won just nine of their 19 away games last campaign, four fewer than Arsenal and five shy of City, and that cost them the title. Slot is keen to remedy their troubles away from Anfield and has made the perfect start with three wins from three outings.

    WHAT SLOT SAID

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's game at Crystal Palace, Slot said: "If you are purely looking at it from a data point of view then it was a 10-point difference to City [on away points collected]. If you look at the home form of both teams then the £10m question is why is this?

“I think there are areas we have to improve and that is why it is so important to take control over every game, not only the home games but the away ones too. Just to be very dominant in away games that is why I wasn't very happy with the first 20 minutes at Wolves."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool know the fine margins of the Premier League better than any club, with the Reds missing out on the title by mere points on numerous occasions. In his first season in the dugout, Slot is aiming to stamp out the sloppiness in his side's away form that haunted his predecessor Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge. The Reds have already picked up maximum points at Ipswich, Manchester United and Wolves and will be eager to maintain their form and confidence against Palace.

The new Liverpool boss will be doing all he can to avoid creating more nightmares for the Reds fans.

Next West Ham manager: 10 potential David Moyes replacements

David Moyes’ tenure at West Ham United is set to come to an end this summer. It has been a wild ride, with the Scot taking over for a second time in late 2019 to drag the Hammers to Premier League safety.

What followed was truly remarkable, with the former Everton and Manchester United boss guiding the east Londoners into Europe, making the Europa League semi-finals in 2021/22, before famously going all the way a year later in the Europa Conference League, in what is arguably Moyes’ finest hour of his career.

However, things have gone rather stale at the London Stadium; their latest Europa League exit, while representing progress, comes amid another lacklustre Premier League campaign as they struggled to maintain the levels reached in recent seasons.

Therefore, a change in the dugout could well be on the horizon as Moyes’ contract expires this summer, and Football FanCast has taken a look at some of the candidates to take over in 2024/25.

1 Julen Lopetegui Free agent (Last job: Wolves)

Ex-Wolves, Sevilla and Spain boss Julen Lopetegui is now reportedly set to take over from David Moyes next season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spaniard has agreed terms to become the Hammers' new boss, with contracts now set to be signed:

Lopetegui was hamstrung financially during his brief yet successful time at Molineux as he steered the club to Premier League safety before making way for Gary O’Neil in the summer.

He would represent a high-profile appointment without the need for a compensation package, and as a Europa League winner with Sevilla, Lopetegui certainly has the pedigree required to succeed Moyes in the London Stadium hot seat.

2 Graham Potter Free agent (Last job: Chelsea)

Chelsea's Graham Potter

Should things break down with Lopetegui, Graham Potter could be the leading candidate, with the 48-year-old having been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023. He was arguably handed a poisoned chalice at Stamford Bridge having earned his stripes at Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion, as well as at Ostersunds in Sweden.

He’s been mentioned as a potential Moyes successor but is a man in demand, having recently held talks with Dutch giants Ajax, which reportedly broke down over salary demands. Whether he’d see West Ham as a bigger draw remains to be seen.

Lille manager Paulo Fonseca.

Paulo Fonseca has often been linked with Premier League roles, with Spurs and Everton among those in the past to consider hiring the Portuguese manager, who is currently chasing a Champions League place at Lille.

A well-travelled coach with previous stints at FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma, his lack of Premier League experience may not be as big a problem compared to some of the alternatives here.

4 Ruben Amorim Sporting CP

Ruben Amorim for Sporting Lisbon

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has already had well-publicised talks with West Ham – talks he has since admitted were a “mistake”.

It appears his apology was out of respect for his current club rather than an outright rejection of West Ham, though you would imagine it would be some U-turn to end up signing the dotted line at the London Stadium now. In fact, he has since pledged his future to Sporting.

That said, given his domestic and European success in recent years, it does suggest the Hammers are looking for an exciting appointment.

5 Will Still Free agent (Last job: Stade Reims)

Comfortably the youngest candidate on this list, Will Still has been a trailblazer as manager of Stade Reims in France’s Ligue 1, with his side holding their own in mid-table before he suddenly left his role by mutual consent this week.

Interestingly, Still is a West Ham fan, though whether the likes of David Sullivan will see his short managerial career to date as enough to take the team to the next level is another question.

6 Brendan Rodgers Celtic

Brendan Rodgers.

An experienced boss at Premier League level, Brendan Rodgers was last in the English top flight with Leicester City, who went on to be relegated under Dean Smith.

Having managed in Europe with Celtic and Liverpool, there is no doubting the Northern Irishman’s credentials, but abruptly leaving the Bhoys for a second time may appear unlikely.

7 Gary O’Neil Wolves

Gary O’Neil has impressed since taking over from Julen Lopetegui at Wolves, with the former West Ham midfielder arguably punching above his weight with the Old Gold by keeping them clear of relegation trouble throughout the current campaign.

Having impressed at Bournemouth too, the only question would be whether hiring O’Neil would be seen as a step forward.

Another former West Ham midfielder, Michael Carrick’s first steps into senior management with Middlesbrough have seen some promising signs, with Boro making the Championship play-offs in his first season at the helm. He also guided his team to the Carabao Cup semis this term.

Having also been in caretaker charge of Manchester United, he would appear to be unflustered by the prospect of returning to east London.

9 Hansi Flick Free agent (Last job: Germany)

A Bundesliga and Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, there’s no doubt that Hansi Flick would be a huge coup for the Hammers.

His time as national coach of Germany may persuade the powers that be at the London Stadium that there are better, more reliable options available – but maybe Flick would see West Ham as the right team to rebuild his managerial career at club level.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Set to exit Bavaria this summer, Thomas Tuchel has been mentioned as a potential Moyes successor in recent weeks. Another manager who needs no introduction, the Champions League winner could argue he has unfinished business in the Premier League.

This one looks to be on the unlikelier end of the scale, but the Hammers could yet be rewarded for their ambition if they were to hire the former Chelsea boss.

Farke must brutally drop 1/10 Leeds player after play-off no-show

Leeds United have it all to play for when they welcome Norwich City to Elland Road in the second leg of the Championship play-offs on Thursday night.

The Whites played out a 0-0 draw with the Canaries in Norfolk on Sunday as neither team managed to create many high-quality chances throughout the match.

There were only three shots on target in total, with two of those coming from the away side, and it has left it all to play for for both teams later this week.

Daniel Farke's men know that a win at their own ground on Thursday night will see them book a place at Wembley in the final, where they would face either Southampton or West Bromwich Albion, whose first leg tie also finished 0-0 on Sunday.

The German head coach could look to make some changes to the starting XI that was selected at Carrow Road, and one player who should be brutally binned from the lineup is teenage sensation Archie Gray.

He was picked to play in a number ten role behind Georginio Rutter at the top end of the pitch but it was an experiment that ultimately failed to provide the team with an attacking threat.

Archie Gray's performance against Norwich in numbers

The 18-year-old talent whizzed about the pitch trying to close down opposition players to ensure that the likes of Marcelino Nunez and Kenny McLean did not get too much time on the ball to pick out their passes.

However, his work in physical duels and in possession of the ball left far too much to be desired, which is why he should be dropped back down to the bench after flopping in that area of the pitch.

Gray lost five of his seven duels on the ground, as opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him in contests on the deck, but did win three of his five aerial battles – losing seven out of 12 duels in total.

This suggests that the England U21 international did not offer much in the way of physicality, as he lost the majority of his clashes with Norwich players.

As you can see in the table above, Gray's work with the ball at his feet was not much better as he struggled throughout the match in Norfolk, in a new role.

The teenage whiz, who has mainly been deployed in a holding midfield or right-back position, did not step up to the mark as a number ten from an attacking perspective.

He only completed ten passes in the entire match, despite playing the full 90 minutes, and did not create any chances or complete a single long pass, cross, or dribble, which illustrates that it was a no-show from him in the play-off clash.

Football Insider's Callum O'Connell handed Gray a player rating of just 1/10 for his dismal display, citing the fact that the midfielder lost possession of the ball more times than he completed passes.

It was a disappointing performance from the young gem, due to his big struggles in and out of possession throughout the game, but Farke also played him in an unnatural role in a huge play-off game, which was not an easy situation for him to be dropped in to.

He has been a fantastic performer for Leeds in the Championship this season and this no-show against Norwich was not a fair reflection of his quality.

Archie Gray's form this season

The 18-year-old sensation was named the Championship Young Player of the Season last month for his performances at right-back and central midfield in the second tier.

He featured in 44 of the club's 46 regular season matches and started 40 of those games. In that time, Gray showcased his ability to progress the ball consistently from a full-back role.

The English dynamo currently ranks within the top 31% of Championship full-backs for progressive passes per 90 (4.15), the top 17% for pass accuracy (82.8%), and the top 20% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.08).

Archie Gray

This shows that he has been above average among his positional peers at progressing the play through taking opposition players on and passing the ball to his teammates in dangerous positions.

He also made 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and won 55% of his duels in total, which shows that the academy graduate has largely been solid defensively with more than half of his battles won overall.

However, his talents were not utilised correctly in the 0-0 draw with Norwich as Gray struggled badly in a number ten role, and that is why he should be brutally binned on Thursday.

The alternatives to Archie Gray

Farke could drop Rutter back into the attacking midfield position and then unleash Joel Piroe or Mateo Joseph from the start as the centre-forward.

The French ace, who started upfront at Carrow Road, created 22 'big chances' and registered 15 assists in 44 starts during the regular season, which shows that he has the quality to create high-quality chances for his teammates at an impressive rate.

This makes him ideal for the number ten role as the ex-Hoffenheim starlet can pick the ball up in pockets of space and look to thread passes in the final third to split open the opposition's defence.

Georginio Rutter

Piroe could then be brought in to start over Gray to offer an attacking threat as Leeds, hopefully, look to finish the tie in normal time at Elland Road on Thursday night.

The Dutch marksman scored 13 goals from 12.74 xG (Expected Goals) in the Championship this season, which shows that he has largely been a reliable finisher when chances have come his way.

However, the left-footed ace has also lost 62% of his duels and Farke may worry that Ben Gibson and Shane Duffy would find it too easy to get the better of him in physical battles.

In a one-off match, though, with Wembley on the line, Leeds may want to call upon his lethal instincts in the penalty box to fire the side through to the final of the play-offs, rather than sticking with Gray after his failed experiment as an attacking midfielder.
