Chelsea open to selling "nervy" player for huge loss at end of this season

Chelsea are open to selling one of their out of favour players at the end of the season, with a fresh report revealing that the club have already set a price tag for him.

Todd Boehly's Chelsea overhaul continues…

The Blues sanctioned the sales of 23 players in total during the previous transfer window, with 14 of those leaving on a permanent basis, while the remaining nine were sent out on loan for the rest of the term in order to increase their experience and game time.

With regards to those who are currently out on the road, Todd Boehly and Mauricio Pochettino will have to make a decision on their future at the club upon their return from their temporary spell, and despite it only being December, it sounds like they have already made their mind up on one in particular.

Chelsea now "set to cash in" on "selfless" player who wants to stay

Boehly’s looks very likely to make a ruthless call next month.

Over the summer, Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Real Madrid until the conclusion of the current campaign, although with no option or obligation to buy him included, the goalkeeper’s future is extremely uncertain, especially with the club having added Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic to their ranks.

The Spain international is keen to stay at the Bernabeu Stadium, with Carlo Ancelotti also wanting to keep him in the building, as per the same outlet, and if the following update is to be believed, the 29-year-old’s wish could easily come true because he is no longer wanted at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea set to sell Kepa for massive loss

According to Spanish reports (via CaughtOffside), Chelsea are open to selling Kepa next summer. Pochettino’s shot-stopper does not feature in his long-term plans and he's therefore been placed on the chopping block.

Boehly is expected to make him available for transfer for approximately £13m, and should he not stay at Real Madrid, Sevilla are interested in securing his services. However, La Liga’s outfit aren’t likely to meet the owner’s valuation, so it’s believed that there could be some “tough negotiations” taking place for the man who joined Chelsea for £71.6m five years ago.

Real Madrid's loan goalkeeperKepa Arrizabalaga.

Pochettino needs to get rid of "nervy" Kepa

In the Premier League last season, Kepa ranked as one of the worst players in the squad going by WhoScored's match rating system (Chelsea statistics), and he didn't exactly pass the eye test with fans either, so sanctioning his sale would be completely the right decision to make.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Ondarroa’s native also currently pockets £148k-per-week (Real Madrid salaries), which is more than the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher in the capital (Chelsea salaries), and there’s no way he should be receiving more than consistent regular features of the starting line-up.

As previously described by BBC pundit Ian Wright, Kepa always tends to look “nervy” in the net, and with the hierarchy looking to bring in a new number one anyway, it would be the best outcome for both parties to move onto new pastures at the end of the season.

Leeds vs Coventry team news: Farke without one star despite training return

Leeds United have been handed a boost after learning that one of their first-team stars has returned to training, according to a key figure.

Leeds injury news

The Whites currently have Stuart Dallas, Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton and Ian Poveda out on the sidelines with their own respective problems as it stands, so the club will have to continue trying to pick up positive results without having them at their disposal.

Daniel Farke’s side are set to host Coventry City for this afternoon’s encounter in the Championship, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm UK time, and while the manager will be missing several absentees, there has been some positive fitness news that has emerged regarding another player.

Piroe misses out in Leeds predicted lineup vs Coventry

The possible line-up that Daniel Farke could select to take to action on Saturday.

ByDan Emery Dec 15, 2023

Left-back Junior Firpo has recently been in the treatment room trying to rectify a hamstring problem, and having suffered with a collateral ligament tear in the early stages of the new season, the defender has been extremely limited when it comes to receiving regular game time.

The Dominican Republic’s former international has made just one start and two substitute appearances over the course of the current campaign (WhoScored – Firpo statistics), but following a promising update, the 27-year-old is soon expected to return to the matchday squad, even though it won’t be happening today.

Firpo stages his comeback

Taking to X, BBC broadcaster Adam Pope shared an update from Farke’s pre-match press conference, where the boss confirmed that Firpo is back in training at Leeds and will likely feature after the Coventry clash.

Daniel Farke says Junior Firpo (hamstring) has returned to training but he will be picking from the same squad for Coventry City.”

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.

Farke handed boost over "aggressive" Firpo

Being a left-back, Firpo is naturally stronger in the defensive aspect of his game, where he currently ranks in the 93rd percentile for both tackles and interceptions, highlighting his desire to get stuck into challenges in order to try and win back possession for his team (FBRef – Firpo statistics).

The Santo Domingo native is also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having posted 25 contributions, 14 assists and 11 goals, since the start of his career, showing that he can use his pace to burst down the flank and create chances in the final third (Transfermarkt – Firpo statistics).

The left-footed ace is even a versatile operator having previously been deployed in five different positions over the pitch following his arrival on the professional scene, including everywhere across the backline and two roles in the midfield, so his ability to adapt makes him a wonderful option to have available.

Firpo is “aggressive” in all areas when on the pitch, as described by journalist Josh Bunting, and his return to full match fitness when that day does arrive will no doubt come as a huge boost to Farke, especially considering the issues the manager has had at left-back recently.

Uniforme do Palmeiras estampará propaganda especial no Dérbi

Injury blow for Pakistan as Haris out, Masood in

A late injury setback for Haris Sohail means Shan Masood will take his place in Pakistan’s starting eleven for the Centurion Test. Haris, who has had knee troubles for much of his career, saw another knee injury flare up, forcing him up onto the sidelines. The Pakistan team management confirmed to ESPNcricinfo the change would have to be made just 90 minutes ahead of the scheduled start. It is a blow to Pakistan’s hopes of standing firm against an intimidating South African attack, with Haris one of the players in impressive touch across the home summer. Two centuries against Australia and New Zealand had been accompanied by a string of medium-sized scores, seeming to suggest Haris’ career was back on track after lengthy injury layoffs. This is the second time injury has struck Haris on a tour of South Africa. When Pakistan toured here in 2013, an ankle injury ruled him out of making what would have been his international debut.Haris’ replacement, Masood, has not played international cricket in over a year, dropped after several low scores across series against England, West Indies and Sri Lanka. Masood has, however, been performing impressively for a number of months on the domestic circuit since. He scored 161 against England Lions in Dubai last month, and was in contention to open the batting had Pakistan opted to drop Fakhar Zaman or Imam-ul-Haq.Masood had made his Test debut against South Africa in 2013, in Abu Dhabi. He scored 75 in his first innings as Pakistan won by seven wickets on that occasion. Since, however, he has managed to add just another two fifties and one hundred in 23 innings, his career average standing at 23.54.

Nabi signs up with Melbourne Renegades for second season

The Afghanistan allrounder had been a key part of the Renegades’ run to the semi-final last season

Alex Malcolm02-Nov-2018Afghanistan allrounder Mohammad Nabi has signed with the Melbourne Renegades again for the upcoming Big Bash League season. The 33-year old was a revelation for the Renegades in the seventh season. Of all players who bowled 20 overs or more in the tournament, his economy rate of 5.76 was only bettered by his Afghanistan team-mate Rashid Khan (5.65) and Ashton Agar (5.74). Nabi took eight wickets at just 18.62 and his bowling in the Powerplay was particularly impressive. He also made 52 off 30 balls in a Man-of-the-Match performance in the win over the Melbourne Stars. Nabi was a huge part of the Renegades run to the semi-final, and his absence due to international duty was sorely felt as the Renegades lost to the eventual champions Adelaide Strikers.Overseas spinners have again proved a popular choice for BBL teams following the success of both Nabi and Rashid. Another spinner from Afghanistan – Mujeeb Ur Rahman – signed with Brisbane Heat while Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane joined the Melbourne Stars and will be replaced by Lancashire and England Lions legspinner Matt Parkinson when he heads to the Bangladesh Premier League. The Renegades have also added legspinner Cameron Boyce to their squad after crossing from the Hobart Hurricanes.

Harry Kane, Arsenal, Kylian Mbappe and the winners and losers of the Champions League quarter-final draw

The last eight will feature some real heavyweight clashes, including some eagerly-awaited rematches…

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League has thrown up some fascinating fixtures, which is just as well, really, as the last 16 was largely devoid of real intrigue and intensity.

For the third successive season, holders Manchester City will face 14-time winners Real Madrid, whom the English outfit beat on their way to lifting the trophy last season, while Arsenal will take on Bayern Munich, meaning Harry Kane will be returning to north London (along with Eric Dier!).

Atletico Madrid's reward for eliminating Inter is a meeting with this season's surprise package, Borussia Dortmund, and the winner of that tie will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona, who have plenty of history on and off the field.

So, who are the big winners and losers of Friday morning's draw in Nyon? GOAL breaks it all down below…

  • Getty

    WINNER: Manchester City

City are in the tougher half of the draw, there's absolutely no doubt about that – but they were last season, too, and they still went on to claim their first European Cup. So, the reigning champions won't be the least bit intimidated by their path to Wembley, particularly as they will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

City overwhelmed Los Blancos just over a year ago and while Jude Bellingham has since taken the Santiago Bernabeu by storm, Carlo Ancelotti's side are lucky to be in the last eight, after being outplayed in both legs of their last-16 clash with RB Leipzig.

A potential semi-final with Arsenal would be far from ideal for City, given the two sides are locked in a three-way battle with Liverpool for the Premier League title, but neither the Gunners nor Bayern, whom City also beat last year, will hold any fear for the tournament favourites.

LOSER: Kane & Tuchel's trophy hopes

Bayern were hammered by RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup, dumped out of the DFB-Pokal by FC Saarbrucken and trail Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points in the Bundesliga. Fair to say, then, that they could have done with a decent draw in the Champions League in order to boost their hopes of avoiding a first trophy-less season since 2012. They didn't get one, though. Truth be told, things couldn't have gone much worse for Bayern, who will have to beat Arsenal and then either Manchester City or Real Madrid just to make it to Wembley.

As it stands, that looks well beyond a team that laboured to victory over Lazio in the last 16. Harry Kane is, at least, in absolutely sensational form and he will relish the chance to get one over on old rivals Arsenal, but his hopes of finally getting his hands on some silverware have unquestionably faded.

Indeed, it's now difficult to see Thomas Tuchel's tumultuous tenure at the Allianz Arena ending in anything other than further frustration.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Kylian Mbappe

Could Kylian Mbappe actually bring the curtain down on his Paris Saint-Germain career by ending his hometown club's agonising wait for Champions League glory? It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility – not after Friday's draw.

Barcelona represent a tricky proposition for PSG. Despite their pedigree, the Catalans are happy to have made it this far, given their fluctuating form and injury issues. The pressure seems to have been lifted on Xavi since he announced his intention to step down this summer, while his La Masia starlets are shining brightly at the moment.

However, opportunity undeniably knocks for Mbappe and PSG. They already have Ligue 1 wrapped up, meaning Luis Enrique can rest key players whenever he wants, while the Spaniard obviously knows Barca inside-out.

As for Mbappe, he has plenty of happy memories of tearing a Blaugrana backline to shreds and will likely relish the opportunity to endear himself to Real Madrid ahead of his expected transfer to the Bernabeu. But the France forward will have his eyes on the ultimate prize now that PSG have been placed on the side of the draw. A second Champions League final appearance is there for the taking for Mbappe & Co.

    LOSER: Arsenal

Arsenal were rather bizarrely installed as second-favourites with some British bookmakers after the last 16 – but they've unsurprisingly drifted after the draw for the quarter-finals. Will Arsenal fear a Bayern Munich side that has been at war with itself for arguably well over a year? Absolutely not. The Gunners will also be looking forward to inflicting more misery on former Spurs striker Harry Kane.

But Bayern are not to be underestimated. Kane is breaking goalscoring records on a weekly basis and it's not as if he's doing it all by himself – he's surrounded by some incredibly dangerous dribblers, in Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala. The Bavarians also boast some quality operators who have seen and done it all, while the fact that the second leg is at the Allianz Arena is also an issue for Arsenal, who have been poor away from home in this season's Champions League, winning just one game, at struggling Sevilla.

What's more, even if Arsenal get by Bayern, they'll most likely have to face City in the semis and not only would they be unlikely to get the better over the champions over two legs, the tie would undoubtedly take an awful lot out of them at a time when they'll be fighting desperately to win the Premier League title.

The Gunners will obviously relish the challenge but there's no denying that the odds are now stacked against them in Europe.
