Hampshire coast final repeat after Sam Northeast ton against old side Kent

Kent’s reply never got going as the Royal London Cup holders ran out comfortable winners

There were some players hanging on the announcement of England’s preliminary World Cup squad, but Sam Northeast wasn’t one of them. England ambitions partly explained his move from Kent to Hampshire. But a year later, England still aren’t looking.Still, why not take out your frustrations on your former county? Northeast, prolific in 50-over cricket, was booed by Kent supporters at Lord’s during last season’s Royal London Cup final, but made 75 not out in a comfortable Hampshire win. Back at Canterbury for this South Group tie, he upgraded that with an unbeaten 105 from 95 balls. An even more one-sided win – by 90 runs and frankly Kent were lucky to get that close – provided Northeast with ample delight. Not that Kent supporters booed him this time. This was Canterbury on an idyllic spring afternoon, a most placid of settings, where the members prefer to doze in quiet contemplation of the excellence before them. Even to be described rather tastefully as “supporters” might mildly offend them, the definition having only been around for about 700 years.Northeast’s century was not a breeze, however. The white ball once again displayed a depressing reluctance to do anything untoward, but the pitch was a bit sticky and Northeast had made 47 from 61 balls in workmanlike fashion at the point when Hampshire subsided from 213 for 3 to 224 for 6. His response – another 58 from his last 34 balls – was perfectly judged; the result his fourth List A hundred. That Hampshire slump in mid-innings was caused by Matt Milnes, a powerful medium-fast seamer who Kent enticed from Nottinghamshire in the season with the promise of more regular cricket. Five wickets on debut was not a bad start. Fortune favoured him in his dismissal of the openers: Tom Alsop strangled down the leg side by his loosener; Aiden Markram surprised when a solid-enough defensive shot could not prevent the ball from spinning back on to his stumps. His 3 for 5 in seven balls to halt Hampshire in mid-innings had more to commend it as he mixed things up skilfully from largely back of a length. Rilee Rossouw had taken Kent for a century in last year’s final in an opening position and, here switched to the middle order, looked intent upon a repeat. If Milnes had not silenced Rossouw’s 55 from 43 balls the margin of defeat could have been much greater. But Rossouw’s leg-side pick-up picked out deep midwicket, Liam Dawson took two steps down and hauled him to square leg in the next over and Aneurin Donald made a second-ball duck as he swung at another ball straying down the leg side. There might have been a sixth, too – Northeast on 70 – had Zak Crawley held a tough chance at long off, diving forward.James Vince, like Northeast (and indeed Kent’s absentee captain, Sam Billings, a squaddie at the IPL), has also been overlooked by England’s World Cup selectors. England are not short of batting talent when such players grace the county game. Vince made a half-century that his admirers would have probably judged 73% on the Pretttiness Meter then departed to a top-edged sweep which flew to backward square while he was trying to locate it at mid-on. So ugly that those admirers would have needed a lie down. For Kent to find themselves in the game at six down with 10 overs left was arguably more than they deserved. Northeast, who looks slightly bulkier with every season, although not yet to reach the standards of his mentor Rob Key, steadied Hampshire. That he would steal his hundred was far from certain, but after Chris Wood sacrificed himself with a run out, chasing a second, Northeast hacked a slow bouncer from Milnes over point to reach 99 and drove the penultimate ball down the ground for a richly rewarding moment.Kent’s chase under lights malfunctioned with the loss of three wickets in the first six overs. Daniel Bell-Drummond, squared up by late away movement was caught from a leading edge at cover off Kyle Abbott, then Australia’s Matt Renshaw, on his home debut, nicked a drive as Wood took one down the slope.Stand-in captain Heino Kuhn, who made almost 700 runs at an average of 87 last summer, departed for nought in unfortunate fashion when Abbott deflected a Crawley drive on to the stumps. The captain is at the IPL and so is the vice-captain. It appeared even the Gods had now deserted him.Crawley made an upright, leg-side dominant 49 that was reminiscent of the former England batsman John Crawley no matter how many times one is reminded that he is no relation. Harry Podmore bashed a face-saving 40.But the game was as good as gone. The temperature dropped, smoke enveloped the ground at one point and much of the crowd went home. Hampshire had considerably more bowling variation, not just in a sharper, more varied pace attack (no extra venom from Matt Henry with the new ball for Kent, unlike last season’s 50-over competition), but also in the legspin of Mason Crane.Crane got through that Lord’s final last summer before succumbing to a stress fracture, and his completion of a full spell was a heartening sight. Kent, by contrast, had Alex Blake learning offspin. Note to Kent: the ECB said the Developmental Competition starts next season…

Four overseas players not compulsory in CSK's rule book

Coach Fleming stresses on ability and not whether a player is from India or overseas; is happy with squad depth

Unbeaten Chennai Super Kings are sitting on the top of the IPL points table. Both victories were achieved with Super Kings in control of the match. For the defending champions to begin confidently this season is not remarkable. However, the make-up of their playing XI has been out of the ordinary. In both games, they have fielded only three overseas players, even though they’ve had the option to go for four. Both games have been played on pitches that aided the slower bowlers to varying degrees. Despite having Mitchell Santner in the squad, Super Kings have not felt the need to add his all-round talent to their playing roster as yet, with their complement of Indian bowlers and Imran Tahir doing the job. They didn’t even name a replacement when Lungi Ngidi was ruled out before the season started, only roping in Scott Kuggeleijn after David Willey also became unavailable. The playing XI looks set to continue for a third straight game when they take on Rajasthan Royals on home ground on Sunday, barring any late injury or illness. It is almost unheard of to not pick the full complement of overseas stars for three matches in a row, but Super Kings aren’t looking at this as a ‘strategy’. It is, quite simply, a simple matter of picking the best available XI. If only three overseas players fit in it, so be it.”Looking at the squad and skills is not based on overseas versus Indian (players),” coach Stephen Fleming said on Saturday. “Harbhajan Singh was a great option for the left-handed combinations that we faced in the first two games. And that can change if you face a lot of right-handers, you’ve got Mitchell Santner there. But you don’t to play four overseas.”Whilst in the past you’ve picked overseas players that fit into your side, we’re really happy with the quality of Indian players that we have and that’s why we tend to talk about the abilities in the squad rather than if you’re an overseas player or an Indian player. We rate the players that we pick and those two sides were based on the best balance we thought would win the game.”Based on the make-up of the squad and the pitch at the home ground of Chepauk, Fleming also gave out 160 to 170 as the total that should be par on an “ideal” T20 pitch.”We bought a side based on Chennai’s history, which is a slower track,” he said, adding that the pitch for the first game where Royal Challengers Bangalore were bowled out for 70 was an anomaly. “What we saw the other night was an aberration, that’s not normally how it is. A sort of a 160-170 score here has been what we’ve looked for in the past.”The pitch at Delhi was fractionally slow but certainly dry. It think a variation of surface is what you’re after, you don’t want 200 every time. People think that’s the best wicket but if you ask the bowlers that’s probably not a great season for them. So something that’s got a little bit of challenge for the batters, which you can also get a rough par score of about 160, maybe 170 – in between there – and depending on how you get it and what’s on offer, that would probably be the score or conditions you’re looking for if you want it to be ideal.”Whether faced with a pitch on which 100 is par, or 150 or 200 – Fleming and the Super Kings think-tank know they have the personnel to fit the conditions, Indian or overseas.

Liverpool 'frustration' could kick in soon after Arne Slot takes over from Jurgen Klopp as ex-Red Ryan Babel sounds warning to former club

Ryan Babel believes Arne Slot deserves his chance as Liverpool boss but warned his former club about a lack of patience.

Dutchman set to replace Klopp at AnfieldBabel joined Liverpool from AjaxSlot highly regarded in HollandGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Feyenoord boss Slot is all set to replace Jurgen Klopp, with the German legend departing Anfield at the end of the season after over seven years service. Slot is highly regarded in the managerial world after guiding Feyenoord to the 2022-23 Eredivisie title but Babel is aware patience will still be required.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Babel knows a thing or two about swapping the Eredivisie for the Premier League, having joined Liverpool from Ajax in 2007. It’s a move that can often turn pear-shaped and Erik ten Hag’s recent struggles as Manchester United manager should serve as a warning to Slot as he soon prepares to travel to Merseyside.

Getty ImagesWHAT BABEL SAID

Babel told The Athletic: “A Dutch manager will naturally want to play football, especially if they have been in the top three in Holland. But different rules apply in the Premier League.

“Erik ten Hag had done a very good job at Ajax, the players he had there could really execute his vision and that made him look good as a coach. And now he’s at Man United, a big team as well. He wanted to apply his vision but, for some reason, it doesn’t really come and now people question whether he is a really good manager or not.

“So it’s a fine line to see if a new coach has the squad in place to immediately realise their vision. New coaches always naturally have time, the question is how much time does Slot get? Liverpool have been spoilt with the Jurgen Klopp philosophy and era. I think anything less, then frustration will kick in very, very quickly."

The £4.5m Leeds flop who now sells vacuums for a living

Leeds United ended their three-year stay in the Premier League earlier this year as they were relegated from the top-flight under Sam Allardyce.

The experienced English coach arrived in an attempt to save the day but was unable to prevent the relegation after Javi Gracia and Jesse Marsch had left the club in a difficult position.

Whilst the managers can take responsibility for their respective failures, former sporting director Victor Orta should shoulder some of the blame for his work to assemble the playing squad that failed to perform.

Georginio Rutter

£35.5m

Brendan Aaronson

£28.4m

Rodrigo

£25.9m

Dan James

£25.1

Luis Sinisterra

£21.6m

As you can see in the table above, the Spaniard was able to splash the cash on several occasions in an attempt to bolster the squad, for Bielsa and Marsch, but rarely had success at Premier League level with those big-money moves.

Rutter and Aaronson – the two most expensive signings of Orta's time at Elland Road – combined for one goal and four assists in 47 top-flight matches throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

The now-Sevilla chief is not the only Leeds figure to have made mistakes in that department over the years, though, and one famous transfer market blunder was the signing of attacker Tomas Brolin.

The fee Leeds paid for Brolin

Back in November of 1995, the Whites agreed a club-record deal to sign the Sweden international from Italian side Parma for a reported fee of £4.5m.

It was claimed that the club paid £600k upfront for the talented forward and the remaining £3.9m was due to be paid to the Serie A outfit over the subsequent two-and-a-half-years.

Parma reportedly announced that the deal was off as Brolin had failed to agree personal terms with Leeds but the move eventually went through, and then-managing director Bill Fotherby stated that he was always confident that it would go ahead as planned.

It was a big gamble from the Whites as they decided to smash their club record to sign a player who had only played three matches for his club that season and was coming off the back of recovering from a broken foot the previous year.

Brolin has since revealed that he did not want to leave Parma and that his belief was that the Italian side wanted to cash in on him before his contract expired, as the Bosman ruling was due to come in and they did not want to lose him on a free transfer.

Brolin's goal record for Parma

The excellent midfielder enjoyed an impressive spell in Italy with the club as he racked up 31 goals in 190 appearances in all competitions, with spells there on either side of his time with Leeds.

He proved himself to be a goalscorer from a midfield position and contributed to a successful period in Parma's history as they won four trophies during his time there.

The Italian team won the UEFA Supercup, the UEFA Cup, the Europapokal, and the Italian Cup between 1991 and 1995, with Brolin playing a part in their successes.

His best season for goals came during the 1990/91 campaign as the Swedish wizard smashed in seven goals in 33 Serie A outings for Parma.

Brolin's goal record for Sweden

Brolin also caught the eye on the big stage for his country as the impressive attacker racked up an outstanding 25 goals in 46 caps for Sweden throughout his career.

He burst onto the international scene with a fantastic 1992 European Championship performance as the gem ended the tournament as the top-scorer with three strikes.

Two years later, the attacker enjoyed an excellent World Cup as he managed three goals in six outings as his country reached the semi-finals before their loss to Brazil in the last four.

His exploits for Parma and Sweden seemingly convinced Leeds that he was the right player to smash their club record transfer fee on as they swooped to sign him for £4.5m just over a year on from his World Cup heroics in America.

Brolin's goal record for Leeds

However, things did not go to plan for Brolin at Elland Road as his big-money switch to England turned out to be a nightmare for everyone involved.

Howard Wilkinson was the Leeds manager at the time and the Sweden international claimed that the head coach promised him a creative midfield role, where he could get on the ball to make things happen in the middle of the park.

This was not to be the case, though, as he was, instead, utilised as a centre-forward or out wide and was never able to play in the position that was promised to him, as per his claim.

Former Leeds forward Tomas Brolin.

Brolin went on to score just four goals in 24 appearances for the Whites in all competitions throughout his time in Yorkshire, which worked out as around £1.1m per goal from his £4.5m transfer fee.

In 1996, the forward had to apologise to Wilkinson after telling Swedish television that he had agreed to join Norrkoping on loan as an April Fool's interview, which ended up being taken seriously in the English media.

The club eventually opted to release him from his contract in 1997 for a reported £140k to end a dismal spell at Elland Road after his club-record switch from Parma.

What Brolin is up to now

He retired at the age of 28 and ventured into the business sector having met Swedish inventor Goran Edlund in 1997, who had developed a new vacuum cleaner nozzle.

In 2018, The Sun reported that Brolin was a 50% partner in The Twinner and that the brand had become popular in Sweden over the subsequent two decades. By that point, they sold 130,000 products per year and the company was said to be worth 'millions of pounds'.

The Swedish former professional has, therefore, become a successful owner of a vacuum company, which is not the traditional route that former international players take after their retirement, but it has seemingly worked out well for him.

The Daily Star claimed, earlier this year, that the ex-Leeds flop donates 30% of his earnings from sales of the vacuums to a children’s rights society in Sweden.

He has had success off the field since his retirement, with a thriving business, and it is great to see that his sour spell with Leeds was quickly put behind him, as it was a nightmare move for all involved on the pitch.

Phil Hay says "exceptional" Leeds ace could miss Plymouth alongside Struijk

Leeds United could be without one of their key men for the visit of Plymouth Argyle on Saturday to Elland Road, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Leeds United updates…

Despite their positive start to the Sky Bet Championship campaign under Daniel Farke, there is still an element of uncertainty at Elland Road, with several of their first-team players being subject to interest from Premier League clubs.

According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are believed to be keen on Leeds United prodigy Archie Gray and could make a summer bid for the midfielder worth in the region of over £40 million.

The report states that Crystal Palace and Everton are also keen on the 17-year-old, who has earned comparisons to Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold due to his quick rise to first-team football and capacity to feature either in midfield or as a right-back. Gray's contract at Elland Road is set to expire in 2025 and Leeds United value the England Under-19 international at between £40 million and £50 million.

Crysencio Summerville was also subject to summer interest from Bournemouth, Everton and Burnley, while more sides are believed to be following his progress as he continues to produce the goods for Farke in the Sky Bet Championship. From his opening 13 appearances in 2023/24 across all competitions, the Rotterdam-born winger has registered six goals and four assists for his current employers (Summerville statistics – Transfermarkt).

Italy international Wilfried Gnonto is believed to be unhappy with his situation at the Yorkshire outfit and could depart in the New Year should a suitable offer for his services arise, according to Football Insider. Keen to secure his place in Italy's EURO 2024 squad, Gnonto is unhappy with his level of game time at Leeds United; however, the Whites will only let him depart for a significant fee in the January window.

Now, The Athletic journalist Hay has hinted that Leeds United are under threat of being unable to call on the services of another first-team man, albeit only on a temporary basis.

Patrick Bamford could miss Plymouth Argyle clash

As per journalist Hay, sharing quotes from Farke's pre-match press conference, Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is a doubt for the visit of Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Patrick Bamford's scoring record for Leeds United (Transfermarkt)

Appearances

Documenting Farke's words as the German coach specified that Pascal Struijk will definitely miss the clash, Hay stated on social media platform X: "Struijk missing this weekend. He has a hernia and has been to London for treatment and surgery. Due back after the international break. No exact time frame."

He then added: "Bamford (illness) also a minor doubt but trained today. Cresswell (personal reasons) missed training this week. Other team news – Gelhardt out with a fractured hand. Doesn't need surgery. Shackleton (glute) misses Plymouth. Spence in the final stages of rehab. Dallas not ready. Farke says Spence is on track with his recovery but had a bout of tonsillitis which set him back a touch. Leeds have been careful not to push him too soon."

Despite failing to notch a single goal this term from seven outings, Bamford, who was previously labelled "exceptional" by Jurgen Klopp in 2021, can prove to be a handful for defenders when fit and Leeds United may now need to rely on alternative options in the final third to see off the Pilgrims this weekend.

Coach Rajput confident of Zimbabwe pushing South Africa

Zimbabwe’s coach Lalchand Rajput is oozing optimism ahead of the first ODI in Kimberley on Sunday. It’s one trait by which his short tenure – he took over the position full-time in August after filling in on an interim basis in July – has been characterised.”South Africa has to be aware that this is not the Zimbabwe team of the past,” Rajput said. “This is a team that is going to give them a good run for their money. We have come to show the world that we are a competitive team and every game is important. We are here to show we can play aggressive cricket and we are here to win.”That’s fighting talk, and Rajput has inspired teams before. Part of the Indian team’s think-tank for a couple of years, including when they won the inaugural World T20 in 2007, Rajput was also in charge of Mumbai Indians in the 2008 IPL and oversaw many of Afghanistan’s recent achievements during his tenure as their coach. On his watch, Afghanistan won six out of 10 limited-overs series, secured Full Membership, and even toppled West Indies in an ODI in Gros Islet – their first win in the format over a Full Member other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh.Rajput is no doubt looking to replicate that success with Zimbabwe, and is hoping the challenge of taking on South Africa for the first time in three years will spur his team on. “South Africa is always a big challenge, but a challenge always gets the best out of me and the players,” he said.Rajput’s optimism, however, is yet to translate to success on the field. While Zimbabwe stayed just about afloat in their T20I tri-series against Australia and Pakistan, they floundered in the ODIs to lose 5-0 as Pakistan set numerous records.”The series we played when I took over was not good for us, but it was never going to be easy to face Australia and Pakistan in the T20I triangular series and then Pakistan in the ODI series when we were missing seven to eight players,” Rajput explained.”But now that the players are back, it looks a balanced team – a team that wants to do well. Apart from Graeme Cremer and Sikandar Raza, most of our senior players are back and, when experience and youth combine, we can get the best out of the team.”

'Means what it means' – Thierry Henry hopeful he 'annoyed' Rayan Cherki with France U21 snub as he challenges Lyon star to 'show character all the time'

Henry backed Cherki to rediscover his best form after a difficult run at Lyon that has seen his stock drop this season. The midfielder was highly sought after last January, and even on the periphery of the France senior side. But Henry dropped him ahead of the March break – only bringing him in due to shortages elsewhere.

In a press conference, Henry insisted that Cherki needs to return to form: "He should have been annoyed for the last three months, shouldn’t he?” joked Henry when he explained his selection choices in a press conference on Monday. "He has woken up. That’s good. Not seeing his name on the list should have annoyed him. He needs to show consistency because there is a huge difference between sometimes showing character and showing character all the time."

The 20-year-old seems to have reacted to his sub, scoring his first goal of the season against Toulouse over the weekend. After his performance, Henry asserted that Cherki can still be one of the best in the world: "I’m not talking about his quality, because I have never seen a player in history who dribbles as quickly as him, with both feet. But he made a thunderous debut, very young and to not be starting matches today, that means what it means."

Bayern will have no support at Emirates Banned from having away fans by UEFA Arsenal to sell Bayern allocation to home fans Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

The ban on Bayern away fans has been imposed by UEFA. It stems from an incident during Bayern Munich's 3-0 victory over Lazio in the last-16 of the Champions League, where the German club's supporters were found to have thrown fireworks onto the pitch. This behaviour violated UEFA's regulations and resulted in a one-match ban on away fans for Bayern. The Bavarians have accepted UEFA's punishment and will not appeal the decision.

AdvertisementWHAT JAN CHRISTIAN DREESEN SAID

Following UEFA's ruling, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: "We have to accept this punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off, but also fired deliberately onto the field, directly endangering bystanders. This was such an explicit violation of the conditions of probation that an appeal is unfortunately futile. The fact we now have to play away without the support of our fans is a big blow. A small group of individual offenders have done a disservice to all our supporters and the team."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is not the first time Bayern Munich has faced disciplinary action from UEFA due to the behaviour of their supporters. Earlier in the competition, Bayern fans set off fireworks during their group stage match against Copenhagen, leading to a fine of €40,000 (£34,190) and a ban on away supporters.
