Rotation could come into play for England's ODIs – Heather Knight

Heather Knight believes England may need to rotate players through their five-match ODI series with New Zealand as they look ahead to next year’s World Cup.The hosts will name their squad on Saturday for the five ODIs taking place inside 11 days and starting in Bristol on Thursday. The series caps a busy international summer for the hosts, who played a multi-format series with India before peeling off to play for their Hundred franchises and then reconvening to face New Zealand.Neither side has tried to hide the fact they were already focused on the global 50-over tournament in New Zealand in March during their T20I series which went down to the wire, England winning 2-1 with victory in the decider at Taunton with one ball to spare.England’s win on Thursday was helped by Knight, their captain, who returned from a hamstring injury that had kept her out of the first two T20s to score a crucial 42 off 36 balls chasing down a target of 145.Related

Rotating players would allow some weary bodies and minds to rest while giving opportunities for others to force their way into the reckoning ahead of the multi-format Ashes series in Australia and the World Cup.”We’re trying to build a squad of players that are going to be really successful for us and, with the games being so close, there’s potential that we’re going to have to rotate players and give people opportunities at certain points with us having [had] a lot of cricket this summer,” Knight said.”Physically and mentally we need to look after the fast bowlers in particular, so it’s finding that balance of wanting to be successful and win the series against a good New Zealand side but also trying to manage players and trying to look to the future a little bit and give opportunities where we can.”Having won the first T20I easily, England lost the second after New Zealand captain Sophie Devine scored a half-century and took two wickets to level the series and then had to fight hard to win the decider, with Sophia Dunkley continuing her breakout summer by keeping her cool under pressure to score the winning runs.”The fact that the last two games we haven’t had easy,” Knight said after the final match when asked to highlight the most pleasing aspects of the T20 series. “That first game was a real stellar performance from us, it was almost the perfect performance.”The last two have tested us a little bit. We were probably off at Hove, we were a little bit not ourselves and not at the standard we want to be at as a side, but the way the girls turned it around was really pleasing.”It was probably not our best today but the way that we won a pressure game, we’re able to punch out wins and different people are standing up.”Despite the series defeat, Devine was pleased with her side’s direction of travel heading into the ODIs and beyond.”We’ve had a lot of 50-over focus leading into this so it’s actually quite nice to get the T20s out of the way now because for the last couple of months all we’ve been focused on is 50-over cricket with a World Cup around the corner,” Devine said.”We’ll take some learnings out that we can take to the 50-over format which will be really exciting for us and give us confidence, but we’re certainly looking forward to being able to build on what we’ve been able to accomplish in this T20 series.”Devine was keen to bring back seamer Lea Tahuhu, who did not play the T20s while managing her workload after undergoing surgery to remove a pre-cancerous mole from her foot.”We haven’t unleashed Lea Tahuhu yet, which I’m excited about,” Devine said. “She’s going to bring a whole different dimension with our bowling attack, having someone with that pace and bounce is going to be really exciting but also the confidence this group can take from what we’ve been able to achieve.Sophie Devine was player of the T20 series•Getty Images

“I know we didn’t win this series but there’s so many positives we can take out of that. That’s been a key thing for us over this last couple of months, we’ve got to keep growing and we’ve got to keep building. We may not always get the results but as long as we’re trending in the right direction we’re certainly very impressed by what’s just happened.”Devine was also keen to test her side against England in the 50-over format.”The opportunity to be over here playing against the current world champions, you don’t get much better opportunity than that so we’re certainly going to take a lot out of this,” she said. “We’ve worked extremely hard over the last couple of months and it’s exciting to see where this group is heading.”

As it happened – England vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Edgbaston, 2nd day

All the updates, news and stats from day two of the second Test at Edgbaston

Valkerie Baynes11-Jun-2021* Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local6.35pm: Young out last ballNew Zealand boasted an embarrassment of riches for a second day running as Devon Conway and Will Young frustrated England’s bowlers and moved to within 74 runs of the hosts’ first-innings 303 with seven wickets in hand at Edgbaston.Conway, who put his place in the side beyond doubt with 200 on debut in the first Test at Lord’s, produced another valuable, though not chance-less, innings of 80. And, while he would have been disappointed not to press on to triple figures again, a gutsy 82 from Young – in the side as a replacement for injured captain Kane Williamson – mitigated the damage.Stuart Broad bowled superbly for his 2 for 22 from 15 overs, including six maidens, but he was the only England bowler to reap any reward for his considerable efforts – until Young’s dismissal by part-time off-spinner Dan Lawrence on the last ball of the day. Will Young got to his maiden Test fifty•PA Images via Getty Images

6.05pm: NZ bring up 200

5.20pm: Broad works over TaylorBy Matt RollerStuart Broad has just finished an eight-over spell which spread across the tea interval, conceding only 12 runs and taking the wicket of Devon Conway, caught at deep backward square leg. It was his working-over of Ross Taylor – a man he has dismissed ten times in Test cricket – that was particularly impressive, with James Anderson providing support at the other end.Broad’s plan was to set him up with a number of outswingers, dragging him across the crease before angling one back in, and he beat the bat a number of times, putting his hands on his head in frustration after missing the top of off stump by a hair’s breadth. With the crowd urging him on, he hit 87mph/140kph at times and was consistently operating in the mid-80s – according to a Sky Sports graphic, his average speed this summer has been higher than in any of the last three years.Agonisingly, he couldn’t get his man, and while Anderson had him given out lbw shortly after the end of Broad’s spell, the decision was overturned on review with the ball clearly missing leg. Taylor is a notoriously poor starter and has looked out of nick on this tour. With Will Young gritting his way to a half-century, Taylor could do with a score here: Kane Williamson will return to the side in the WTC final next week and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Taylor could be the man to miss out.Stuart Broad appeals unsuccessfully for the wicket of Ross Taylor in the first Test•Getty Images

4.40pm: Have your say

4.20pm: Conway departsStuart Broad finally strikes again with the valuable wicket of Devon Conway, who picks out Zak Crawley at deep square leg for 80. New Zealand are 137 for 2 and Broad is trying to get the crowd more involved as he looks to boost his impressive figures of 2 for 19 from 12 overs.Devon Conway fell on 80•Getty Images

Whipped away with that Conway flourish that we are used to by now, but he has found deep square leg with it. That is that idiosyncratic flair-filled shot. Most people flick this length ball off the pads into the ground, but Conway likes to give it a Humpty. This time he has hit this straight down the throat of deep square leg. Just the break England needed3.50pm: Tea timeOlly Stone rues a dropped catch by Joe Root•Getty Images

England rue a couple of missed opportunities, one they couldn’t do anything about with Zak Crawley not awarded a slips catch to dismiss Devon Conway for 22 when the soft signal was not out (bump ball) and the hosts’ review couldn’t unearth enough evidence to show the ball hadn’t, in fact, touched earth. And then Joe Root shelled a slips catch that would have sent Will Young packing for just 7.As it stands, Conway and Young have put on an unbroken stand of 115 for the second wicket.3.35pm: Tourists ticking alongNew Zealand are ticking along nicely here with England in need of a breakthrough. Conway and Young have pushed their partnership up to an unbroken 111 with Conway 78* and Young 36*. They’ve just changed the ball, Stuart Broad will look to see what he can do with this one. He beats the bat with his first delivery since the change, seaming away from Conway’s attempted defence, and ends with a maiden. Will Young tucks into the off side•Getty Images

2.50pm: Root spins inJoe Root is into the attack as England’s spinner with the home side seeking to break up this partnership between Devon Conway and Will Young, worth 73*.Sampath Bandarupalli, our statstician, pointed out: “Between 2004 and 2020, England played just one home Test without a front-line spinner in the XI (vs SA in 2012 at Leeds).” Now they’ve done it twice in as many matches this summer.Conway is 55 not out and Young is on 21. Root has 0 for 3 heading into his third over.Joe Root is England’s sole spin option – again•PA Images via Getty Images

2.35pm: Fifty up for ConwayDevon Conway flicks one away•Getty Images

Devon Conway, who made such a remarkable debut at Lord’s with 200 in the first innings, brings up his fifty with a drive off a Joe Root half-volley just past deep cover, running two as Stuart Broad fields.Having survived on 22 when Zak Crawley’s slips catch off Broad’s bowling wasn’t given amid doubt over whether the ball touched the ground, Conway is now 51 not out and Will Young unbeaten with 21, their partnership worth 69*.2.00pm: Oh no, Joe!Joe Root, the England skipper has just juggled – and dropped – a catch that would have dismissed Will Young on 7. A lovely ball from Olly Stone found the outside edge and the ball sailed to Root at first slip. He had a couple of goes at grabbing it as he went to ground but couldn’t hold on! It looked a pretty standard chance too. New Zealand were 52 for 1 at the time.Olly Stone coulda, woulda, shoulda had had a wicket•Getty Images

1.50pm: Heart-warmerRegardless of your team loyalties, this celebration of fans returning to the stands at Edgbaston is pretty enjoyable to watch. Yes, he’s understandably biased, but it warmed the cockles of Chris Woakes’ heart.

1.10pm: NZ 260 in arrears at lunchDevon Conway steers New Zealand to lunch at 43 for 1 in the face of an excellent spell from Stuart Broad, which netted him the wicket of Tom Latham for 6 and gave him figures of 1 for 10 so far. Conway is 27 not out and Will Young – in the side for Kane Wiliamson, who has sore elbow – is unbeaten on 6.Stuart Broad bowled a strong opening spell•PA Photos/Getty Images

12.50pm: Another close call for ConwayDevon Conway, the double centurion on debut at Lord’s, has had another escape. Conway edged Stuart Broad to Zak Crawley at third slip and it was one of those where it was difficult to tell whether the ball hit the ground as Crawley was taking the catch. He definitely got his fingers under it but the key was that the soft signal given by the on-field umpire was not-out. Broad was incensed but, on review, there was just enough doubt for the decision to stand. Broad. Not. Happy.Devon Conway is hanging in there•PA Photos/Getty Images

12.30pm: Broad breaks through

12.20pm: That was close!A hearts-in-mouths moment for New Zealand fans there, but Devon Conway keeps his cool. Tom Latham strikes the ball straight back down the pitch and Stuart Broad, in his follow-through, manages to get his fingers to it before it crashes into the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Conway, who was advancing, was watching the ball like a hawk as well though, and managed to turn and stretch his arm out, getting his bat back inside his crease in time.Stuart Broad looks on•AFP/Getty Images

12.00pm: England all out for 303Innings break England 303 (Lawrence 81*, Burns 81, Boult 4-85) vs New ZealandNeil Wagner congratulates Trent Boult after the fall of Stuart Broad’s wicket•Clive Mason/Getty Images

A Dan Lawrence-led recovery has pushed England’s first-innigs total to 303. Lawrence was unbeaten in matching Rory Burns’ top score for England of 81 while Mark Wood produced some entertainment – and valuable runs – with a knock of 41 before he was bowled by Matt Henry.Trent Boult, who took two wickets yesterday, cleaned up the tail, Stuart Broad caught behind for a duck and James Anderson lbw for four. Anderson was initially given not-out by umpire Richard Kettleborough but that decision was overturned on review, which showed Boult had beaten the inside edge with the ball tracking to hit leg stump. Now, with New Zealand getting the ball to swing nicely, home fans will eagerly anticipate seeing Anderson, playing an England-record 162nd Test, do the same.11.25am: Wood gives it some wellyI could tell you how Mark Wood came rollicking out of the blocks this morning, cutting, pulling, driving and dinking like an Ashington Sehwag, but Sid Monga said it better on the ball-by-ball commentary. Matt Henry ended the fun with a full ball, inside-edged onto the timbers, but it’s given England the leg-up they needed, even if Stuart Broad has just nicked off to Trent Boult for a duck. Dan Lawrence has the record-breaking James Anderson for company at 289 for 9, and the onus is on him now to push England past 300.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Here’s Matt Roller with a more considered take on the morning’s tonkings:”Joe Root highlighted the “added responsibility” that England’s bowlers have with the bat on the eve of this series. “If we’re going to grow as a team, if we’re going to become more consistent, we’ll have to add lower-order runs,” he said. While opting to pick Olly Stone – who has batted at No. 10 for most of his first-class career – as a No. 8 might seem to fly in the face of those comments, England’s tail has taken on the additional responsibility.Out of England’s six 50+ partnerships in this series, three have involved lower-order contributions: 52 between James Anderson and Rory Burns and 63 between Burns at Ollie Robinson at Lord’s, plus 66 between Dan Lawrence and Mark Wood here. Stone also added 47 alongside Lawrence last night, helping England towards 300 after they had slipped to 175 for 6.”10.45am: Looking backRory Burns celebrates his half-century•Getty Images

Rory Burns has reflected on his knock of 81 yesterday and he spoke to Sky Sports at the close about his form, which includes a first-innings 132 in the first Test at Lord’s and seven fifties in 10 Championship innings this season. That came after he lost his place in the Test side on England’s recent tour of India. Here’s what he had to say:”It’s been quite a quite a tough day of Test cricket, it’s been pretty even there by the end, I think Dan [Lawrence] has played really well there and in that latter part of the day, probably got us back to scrapping away quite nicely so there’s a there’s something in that surface for everyone.”It’s probably swung a little bit more for them after lunch, and whether that’s conditions over top or on the surface we’ll see.”I felt good, my rhythm’s felt good coming from county cricket and into this environment. I’ve felt in a good place in summer, which is pleasing. It’s nice to be able to get in there and get in amongst it.”10.00am: Dan’s the manDan Lawrence drives down the ground•Getty Images

Welcome back to the our coverage of the second Test at Edgbaston and all eyes will be on Dan Lawrence, England’s No. 7 playing his seventh Test and unbeaten on 67. From a home perspective, England want to see how many more he can add to their score of 258 for for 7 with Mark Wood not out 16 and Stuart Broad and James Anderson to come. Lawrence will be the main wicket New Zealand are focused on prising out on this second morning before getting stuck into the tail.Higher up the order, England have some concerns, as explained by George Dobell while Matt Roller writes that New Zealand showed their impressive strength in depth in making six changes to the side which drew at Lord’s and three of the bowlers who came in – Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Ajaz Patel – claiming two wickets apiece so far.

Sky Sports: Nottingham Forest want to sign 18 y/o defender ahead of Leeds

Nottingham Forest are now thought to be interested in signing a young defender ahead of Leeds United.

Rumours have continued in regards to who could be next through the door, with the club also working to bolster their academy ranks. It has been claimed that Forest have agreed a deal to sign 15-year-old goalkeeper Ally Graham from Dundee United, pipping rivals Newcastle United to a transfer.

Forest also appear to be battling the Magpies for Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez, with an enquiry made for his services, whereas Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is another target and the club could soon make an offer for the Mexican.

Now, it looks as if the Reds are keen to sign a new in-demand teenage centre-back, but they may not have it all their own way.

Nottingham Forest interested in Bruno Ogbus

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Nottingham Forest are keen on signing Freiburg defender Bruno Ogbus ahead of Championship side Leeds United, however, the German side don’t want to sell the 18-year-old centre-back.

As can be seen, AC Milan have also shown an interest in Ogbus and have even made an offer for the Switzerland youth international earlier this month.

However, Freiburg have seemingly given clubs a hands-off warning when it comes to the defender, so a deal could be extremely tricky to complete this summer. Ogbus, who moved to Freiburg back in 2022 from Zurich, is yet to make his first-team debut, turning out instead for the U19s and reserve side.

Forest, meanwhile, have five senior centre-back options in Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, Andrew Omobamidele, Wily Boly and Joe Worrall.

Bale 2.0: Spurs could forget about Werner by signing "unplayable" star

There are a few days to go until the Premier League returns, and at the moment, Tottenham Hotspur appear fairly well-equipped to hit the ground running.

Ange Postecoglou's side looked good in preseason, and Dominic Solanke's recent £65m addition could be a real game-changer for the North Londoners.

However, there's always room to improve, and based on reports from earlier this month, the Lilywhites could complete a move reminiscent of the one that brought Gareth Bale back to the club in 2020.

Gareth Bale scores hat-trick against Sheffield United for Tottenham Hotspur.

This deal would also be the perfect way to secure an upgrade on German international Timo Werner.

Spurs' potential Bale-esque transfer

The player in question is Wilfried Zaha, who was touted for a move to Spurs, among several other clubs, earlier this month in a report from journalist Graeme Bailey.

Now, before the pitchforks come out, we are not claiming that the former Crystal Palace ace is anywhere near the level Bale was, nor are we saying that the pair play in very similar ways, but should this move happen, there are a few similarities to the move in 2020.

The first is very simple: the return of a former Premier League player to the league following a stint with a huge club abroad, Real Madrid in the Welshman's case and Galatasaray in the Ivorians.

Moreover, when the former Saints gem returned to North London, he was on the fringes of things at the Bernabeu and not necessarily enjoying his football, and while the £120k-per-week Abidjan-born star was reasonably productive in Turkey last season, it's been widely reported that he wants a return to English football.

The next similarity is the fact that both players would be 31 at the time of their respective moves and seen more as a luxury addition to the club's attacking contingent, someone who can start games here and there or come off the bench and make something happen before inevitably being moved on.

Wales legendGareth Bale

Lastly, the final similarity depends on the business side of this potential move, as the dream scenario for Levy and Co would surely be to do what they did in 2020 and bring the former Premier League star in on a one-year loan deal, thus avoiding a hefty transfer fee and any longer-term commitment to a player who's on the wrong side of 30 – although whether Galatasaray would agree to a loan remains to be seen.

However, aside from the parallels to the move that brought Bale back to N17 four years ago, there is another reason Zaha would be a great addition to Postecoglou's squad this season: He could replace Werner.

How Zaha compares to Werner

Yes, being a natural left winger, Zaha could be the dream backup option to Son Heung-min at Spurs and, in the process, take Werner's place in the squad entirely, as while he had his moments last season, he wasn't all that impressive.

wilfried-zaha-arsenal-transfer-nicolas-pepe

If we compare the pair's raw output from last season, it's the "unplayable" Ivorian, as former professional James Collins dubbed him, who comes out on top.

For example, in his 42 appearances for the Turkish giants, he scored ten goals and provided five assists, meaning that even though he wasn't having the best of seasons, he still averaged a goal involvement every 2.8 games, which is impressive regardless of the league.

In contrast, the former Chelsea ace scored four goals and provided four assists in his 28 appearances for Spurs and RB Leipzig last season, which equates to an average of a goal involvement every 3.5 games.

Moreover, for those who do not believe the former Palace ace's numbers in Turkey are comparable to those in Germany and England, you only need to look back one season further to his final campaign at Selhurst Park, when he scored seven goals and provided three assists in 28 appearances, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 2.8 games.

Obviously, Zaha is not on the same level as Bale was, but if he joined Spurs for just this season, he could perform a similar role to the Welshman when he returned and provide little bits of magic here and there like he used to for the Eagles while also acting as a short-term upgrade to Werner – oh, and he has a habit of turning up against Arsenal.

No Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine in Zimbabwe squad for Afghanistan Tests

Zimbabwe also play Afghanistan in three T20Is in the UAE next month, with the tour starting on March 2

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Feb-2021Zimbabwe have named a 15-member squad for their two-Test series against Afghanistan starting on March 2 in Abu Dhabi. The squad, however, is missing the veteran pair of Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine, who were absent from a Zimbabwe Cricket camp owing to illness, and were thus not considered for the tour. Meanwhile, Tarisai Musakanda – whose solitary Test so far came against Sri Lanka back in 2017 – has returned to the Test party.Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe

Top-order batsman Musakanda recently slammed consecutive centuries for the Southerns in domestic cricket. He made 111 and 125 against the Northerns in a tournament the team management had seen as preparation for the Afghanistan Tests. Middle-order batsman Ryan Burl – who also bowls useful legspin – has made a comeback to the Test side, having himself played his only Test against South Africa in 2017.Apart from Taylor and Ervine, other notable absentees from the Test squad include Tendai Chatara, Chamu Chibhabha and Peter Moor, who are yet to recover from their right upper-arm, thigh muscle and hamstring injuries.Related

Arsenal ponder deal for 148-goal star as £100,000-a-week ace considers exit

Arsenal are considering a move for one highly-regarded attacker with 148 career goals in total, coming as a squad member becomes open to leaving this summer.

Edu and Arteta identify forward targets for Arsenal

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, assisted by the club's recruitment team and high-ranking transfer chief Edu Gaspar, has identified several rumoured forward targets as Arsenal look to upgrade their ranks ahead of next season.

The likes of Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz played a crucial role with their attacking impetus last season – racking up a brilliant 51 goals and a further 23 assists between them in all competitions – but Arteta is believed to want another option.

Indeed, Arsenal's manager is keen on a young striking partner for Havertz, leading to their interest in signing RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko earlier this window. Unfortunately, the Slovenia international decided to remain at Leipzig – even putting pen to paper on a new contract despite an offer from Arsenal and other elite Premier League sides.

Luckily, Edu and co have earmarked opposing targets for the 21-year-old. One example is Arsenal displaying a rumoured interest in Ajax striker Brian Brobbey recently, as Arteta seeks an alternative option to Gabriel Jesus going forward.

Arsenal have also been linked with both Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres and Napoli star Victor Osimhen since the window opened, but both strikers could become very costly operations for interested sides.

Gyokeres' contract includes a seismic £86 million release clause, while it is believed Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is holding firm on Osimhen's £110 million exit clause as well.

A much cheaper and attainable choice, especially considering he has just one year left on his contract, is Lille talisman Jonathan David. The Canada international, who's racked up 148 career goals for both club and country, could be available for just £20 million.

Arsenal ponder Jonathan David signing as Eddie Nketiah considers exit

CaughtOffside have an update this week concerning Arsenal, David and Eddie Nketiah.

According to their information, Arsenal are pondering a move for David as Nketiah considers leaving the club. The latter, who scored five league goals in 27 appearances last season, is attracting serious interest from Ligue 1 giants Marseille and Arsenal could sell the 25-year-old.

Marseille are said to be preparing a bid for the £100,000-per-week Nketiah, and if the Englishman were to be sold, then Arteta would need a prolific replacement. David is being considered for that role after another prolific season in France, where he managed 26 goals 47 across appearances in all competitions last season.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Both Ronaldo and Messi are heading towards the end of their phenomenal careers after dominating world football for the last two decades. The two superstars have won 13 of their last 15 Ballons d'Or, the top prize awarded to the best player on the planet. However, a new index by University of Oxford mathematician Dr Tom Crawford and Live Score has revealed which players are set to battle it out to succeed Ronaldo and Messi as the new GOAT.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Crawford has produced a mathematical model called the G.O.A.T. Index 2.0 in a bid to discover the next best player in the world. The model analyses the achievements and potential of global footballers under the age of 25 and offers a ranking dependent on various metrics such as goals, titles and career milestones. The research also looks at the potential of players using a sophisticated comparative analysis of Messi and Ronaldo’s careers to produce a final score.

  • WHAT THE RESEARCH SAID

Dr Crawford's model has found that Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is currently top of the index with a score of 86%. He's followed, perhaps surprisingly, by Julian Alvarez (84%) and then Jude Bellingham (82%). Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland (81%) is in fourth spot, ahead of Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr (68%) and Rodrygo (64%), and Phil Foden (63%).

  • WHAT DR CRAWFORD SAID

He said: "As a massive football fan, I’ve watched Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi battle it out for many years. It’s now incredibly exciting to identify who of the next generation will take their place at the very top of the game, as a new debate grips fans. It’s no surprise to see players like Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham come out on top of my algorithm, but to also see perhaps more unexpected players is really exciting and I can’t wait to see what the future truly holds for the sport."
