‘Not the Mohamed Salah of old’ – Liverpool told of two possible replacements as former Reds captain responds to Saudi transfer talk

Liverpool no longer have the “Mohamed Salah of old”, with Paul Ince speculating on two possible replacements for the Egyptian superstar.

Salah has been a talismanic presence at Anfield across seven memorable years, with Premier League and Champions League titles claimed while scoring 211 goals through 349 appearances. The 32-year-old does, however, have just 12 months remaining on his current contract and has been linked with a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League.

AdvertisementWHAT INCE SAID

Former Liverpool captain Ince has told of what the immediate future could hold for a legendary figure on Merseyside: “When the talk started to come out about Mohamed Salah going to Saudi at the back end of last season and how much they were prepared to pay him, I thought his form dropped. He wasn't the Salah of old. I think you've got to understand, Salah has been absolutely immense for Liverpool. Absolutely immense, year after year after year, scoring so many goals. But in the last three or four months of the season he looked a bit tired, a little bit jaded. He didn't look himself and his touch wasn't there. It's a tricky one because he's so important to Liverpool Football Club and has been for so many years. But when Kevin De Bruyne talks about potentially going to Saudi, other players are thinking exactly the same thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Salah did go to Saudi, but I hope he stays because he's such a special player and because the manager wants him.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

There is no indication of Liverpool cashing in on Salah just yet, but Ince has floated two possible transfer targets for the Reds if they were to find themselves in the market for another right winger. The ex-England international said: “I think two players could replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. With Michael Olise, he's a very good kid, he could turn out to be a world class player but I think he needs another year at Palace to play regular football week in and week out. The two players I would pick when they are on their game are Mohammed Kudus at West Ham. I think he's very, very good. My favourite is Pedro Neto at Wolves. If he can just stay away from injuries, I think this player is going to be world class. I really, really do. So I hope he gets a lot of time in Portugal in the Euros because he is unbelievable. If Salah does go, I'll be going for Neto. I know the Wolves won't like me to hear me say that being an ex-Wolves player, but those are the two that I'd be looking at.”

WHAT NEXT?

Salah has suggested that he will be staying put, as he potentially runs his deal down towards free agency in 2025, but new Liverpool boss Arne Slot will be scouring the summer market for short and long-term additions to the squad that he has inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

Clement could ditch Lundstram in Rangers move for "superb" 5ft 11 gem

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be looking to add to the solitary signing of Fabio Silva in the coming weeks, especially with three trophies to aim for during the second half of the season.

With the League Cup already residing in the Ibrox trophy room, Clement has the opportunity to add the Scottish Cup and a Premiership crown to that – even the Europa League also represents a chance for further glory.

The Gers reached the final in 2022 and if Clement gets his team really firing in the coming months, anything can happen.

He will need to make a couple more signings, however, in order to add some depth to his first-team squad, which was decimated by an injury crisis prior to Christmas.

While Clement is rather thin with regard to his attacking options, adding another midfielder to the squad could be a shrewd move this month and the club have been linked with a South American gem recently…

Rangers transfer news – Steven Alzate

According to Belgian outlet DH Les Sports, at the start of January, the Light Blues were monitoring Colombian midfielder Steven Alzate ahead of making a potential move for the player this month.

Alzate’s contract at Brighton and Hove Albion expires at the end of the current season, and he is currently out on loan at Belgian side Standard Liege.

Steven Alzate for Brighton

A recent update on his situation has seen several clubs emerge as contenders to sign the 25-year-old during the transfer window.

Club Brugge are one of the teams showing interest in the player, while there is also a Premier League side keeping tabs on Alzate, and it is evident that Clement faces some competition to lure him to Scotland this month.

The 49-year-old won't just be looking to strengthen his team for the second half of the season, but also for the foreseeable future, especially due to several of his senior players entering the final months of their current deals.

Indeed, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Borna Barisic, Leon Balogun and Jon McLaughlin could all depart in the summer for nothing.

It remains to be seen who will be kept, as several of these players have barely featured this term and Clement could free up a big chunk of the wage bill by allowing them to leave.

Lundstram is perhaps the player who has the best case for staying, mainly with his recent form under the Belgian, yet might he be moved on for someone younger? Especially if he demands a high wage.

John Lundstram has shone under Clement

The former Sheffield United midfielder has endured a rather Jekyll and Hyde stint at Rangers since joining in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer.

His first few months were marred with inconsistency, as he started just four times for the club prior to the first international break of the season, and it culminated with him being sent off against Alashkert in the Europa League qualifying round.

Rangers'JohnLundstramduring training.

The £22k-per-week brute eventually settled into a role in the heart of the midfield and began to show his class, especially in Europe.

Lundstram was one of the stars as the Light Blues reached the final of the Europa League, with the Englishman netting against Borussia Dortmund and scoring the winner in the semifinal against RB Leipzig.

This led Ally McCoist to dub him a “cult hero” prior to the final, although they didn’t win the competition. A trophyless season in 2022/23 wasn’t great, but Lundstram has looked back to his best under Clement over the previous few months.

The 29-year-old started 17 of the first 18 matches Clement took charge of and in the league this term, Lundstram has an average pass success rate of 89% per game, along with recovering 6.9 balls per game and averaging 1.1 key passes each match as he showcases his class.

Clement will be looking to bring the average age of his squad down and Lundstram will turn 30 next month, which should deter the manager from offering him a long-term deal.

Could Alzate come in and replace the former Blades' midfielder this month? Time will tell.

Steven Alzate’s season in numbers

The Colombian international does have Premier League experience, featuring in the English top flight 43 times during his career.

He fell out of favour at Brighton during the last couple of years and his loan spell at Standard Liege has enabled him to return to the form which saw him be a key member of the Brighton team between 2019 and 2021.

Steven Alzate

Despite playing just 11 league matches this term, the 25-year-old has scored once and grabbed two assists while he has shone among his teammates across a range of metrics.

Alzate currently ranks third in the squad for big chances created (two) in the Belgian Pro League this term, along with ranking second for accurate passes per game (43.7) and first for tackles per game (2.4), indicating that he has been impressive in both an attacking and defensive sense.

The 5 foot 11 dynamo was hailed by journalist Bunting during his spell at Brighton, who said: “Steven Alzate superb again for Brighton, he is so creative, brings so much energy into the game.”

His form this season looks as though he is returning to this creative midfielder who not only can push forward and create chances when possible but can dictate the play from deep and provide a reliable defensive option in the middle of the pitch.

Lundstram, in all likelihood, will receive an extension to his contract, but it should only be a one-year deal as Clement looks to add some fresh blood to this area of the senior side.

Alzate is four years younger than the Englishman and if given regular game time by Clement, he could soon take his place in the starting XI.

It is unclear whether Rangers will make an official approach this month, or simply secure his services on a pre-contract, but a move for the South American is imperative if the former Club Brugge manager wishes to add some steel to his midfield.

Liverpool eye up "special" Xabi Alonso alternative to supercharge Nunez

The dust might have settled after Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement that he will step down as Liverpool manager this summer but an air of despondency remains at the core of every supporter.

How can Anfield possibly replace such an esteemed and transformative manager? The 56-year-old has won six major honours during his eight-and-a-half-year tenure with silverware very much on the line this term but that is not why his name will forever be hung in the Anfield corridors, adorning the walls.

Klopp's transcendent reign has pumped life back into Liverpool, and turned "doubters to believers", a promise he made upon his appointment back in 2015, he has won the hearts and elevated the joy of a proud and football-frenzied city.

But his time at the helm is drawing to a close and he has earned the right to decide when that might be; now, as bitter as it might be, the Reds are working hard to identify and appoint a worthy successor.

Liverpool's manager shortlist

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner to replace Klopp at Liverpool, but he is contracted at the BayArena until 2026 and the Bundesliga table-toppers are reportedly confident of keeping him at the club.

Sporting's Ruben Amorim

As such, Liverpool could turn to Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim as an alternative, with Correio da Manhavia TEAMtalk – revealing that scouts have been watching the Portuguese outfit and ascertaining the suitability of Amorim's tactical style.

Ruben Amorim could keep Nunez firing

Liverpool owners FSG will be desperate to ensure that a changing of power does not devolve into something lacking cohesion, verve and promise.

Klopp is a one-of-a-kind manager but Amorim could be a good replacement, and while Alonso, who made 210 appearances and won the Champions League with Liverpool, is the favourite, Sporting are an exciting and tactically fluid team and Amorim could thrive on Merseyside.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim

Tending to field a 3-4-3 formation that allows ball-playing centre-backs to drift into pockets of space centrally and pull the strings from deep, this is exactly the kind of system that Liverpool could adapt to, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate two of the Premier League's finest defensive distributors, both completing north of 89% of their passes this term.

Moreover, the Anfield side have been fiercely linked with a move for Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio for a while, with the 22-year-old one of the most creative and technically proficient centre-halfs in the business, and Amorim could arrive with the "complete" defender – as remarked by talent scout Jacek Kulig – in tow.

But crucially, handing Amorim the keys could preserve Darwin Nunez's ever-improving presence at the club; the Uruguayan striker signed from SL Benfica in a club-record move totalling £85m in 2022, but missed 20 big chances in the English top-flight last season and was harangued for his profligacy.

He's a menacing, tenacious and spirited striker, however, and the Liverpool faithful have maintained the faith all the way – as, crucially, has Klopp.

This term, the 24-year-old has posted 11 goals and ten assists from just 20 starts in all competitions and has been sharper and more economical in his movements and influence.

Amorim likes to wear teams down and implement crisp and quick passing patterns before sundering the backline with laser-focussed through balls, and given Nunez's pace and energy, he will surely maintain his fine form under new management.

cody-gakpo-darwin-nunez-liverpool-opinion

Alonso remains the frontrunner, but Amorim would be an excellent alternative and has already showcased his credentials by winning the Liga Portugal with his outfit, beating the formidable Benfica and FC Porto in 2020/21 – lauded as a “special” manager by journalist Zach Lowy.

The 39-year-old's ears will have pricked up upon Klopp's declaration, and Liverpool are wise to have had him earmarked.

Liverpool could sign Van Dijk’s new Gomez in "incredibly fast" £13m titan

The January transfer window is now approaching the final stretch, and while there is still plenty of time for Liverpool to make a move, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will do anything dramatic over the coming weeks.

Defence is surely the priority in the market but with the emergence of Jarell Quansah, it looks like the pursuit of a new star is on pause until the summer, though potential arrivals have been earmarked.

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Liverpool looking at signing a Bundesliga star

Sporting Lisbon defensive duo Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande are reportedly both on Liverpool's radar but neither would come cheap, and if Klopp and co desire a shrewder alternative, then advancing negotiations for Japan international Ko Itakura might be the best move.

According to Sky Sports reporter Patrick Berger, the Borussia Monchengladbach star – who has a €15m (£13m) release clause in his contract, active in the summer – is being considered by the Anfield side, with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur also interested.

How Ko Itakura would fit in at Liverpool

In 2022, Gladbach signed Itakura from Manchester City for €5m (£4m), though he had never actually reached Pep Guardiola's first team during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Nonetheless, numerous loan spells – including a stint in the Netherlands that led pundit Hans Kraay to dub him "one of the very best central defenders in the Eredivisie" – culminated in a promotion-clinching campaign in Germany's second tier with FC Schalke, convincing his current club to swoop in and sign him on a permanent.

Ko Itakura for Japan

The 26-year-old has been injured for large parts of the 2023/24 season but has bagged two goals from just seven outings, though a better reflection of his defensive armoury can be pulled from last season, having completed 91% of his passes in the German Bundesliga, also winning 62% of his duels and succeeding with 89% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 16% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 13% for pass completion and the top 5% for blocks per 90.

Such metrics underscore the player's excellent ability to thrive across different facets of the defensive game, and with the £31k-per-week ace also noted for his "incredibly fast" pace by Kraay, he could prove to be Virgil van Dijk's next Joe Gomez in the Liverpool rearguard.

Gomez and the Dutchman were once considered the finest partnership in English football and won the Premier League and Champions League under Klopp's guidance with some imperious and dynamic displays together, serving as foils to each other's skill sets.

While Van Dijk is arguably the best defender in the world right now, Gomez fell by the wayside last year and while he has now picked himself back up, his protean talent is being used at full-back with greater regularity this season.

But Itakura could serve the England international's former role and provide the Reds captain with a fleet-footed presence beside him to ensure that Liverpool's multi-dimensional system maintains its fluidity.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Gomez ranks among the top 5% of positional peers for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90 to emphasise this point.

Given the small outlay that would be required to secure Itakura's services, this might be the move to make for Liverpool as they look to add depth and something different to their ranks, maintaining the cohesive and free-flowing nature of their squad.

Chelsea complete move to sign Diong who has already visited Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign an exciting new teenager at the end of the season, according to a reliable journalist.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have nine squad members who are aged 20 or under as it stands, with some of those who have been able to force their way into the first-team fold being the likes of Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto and Romeo Lavia, despite his injury struggles since joining.

Todd Boehly has a track record of recruiting rising stars who he believes could go on to become an integral player for the long-term future of the club, with Mauricio Pochettino having shown that he is willing to give them a chance to prove themselves should they deserve it.

Therefore, any of the club’s transfer targets with a similar profile may well be attracted to the project on offer if they know they will receive a fair opportunity, and AF Darou Salam’s defensive midfielder Pape Daouda Diong has been highlighted as someone of interest.

The Athletic reported that Senegal’s youth international was in attendance at Stamford Bridge for the Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Premier League rivals Newcastle United, and if the following update is to be believed, the 17-year-old has since been in talks to join in the summer.

Chelsea set to land Diong

Taking to X, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Chelsea have now completed a deal to sign Diong, with the midfielder set to turn 18 next summer and join the ongoing Stamford Bridge project.

He wrote: "Chelsea have completed deal to sign Senegal U17 midfielder Pape Daouda Diong, as revealed two weeks ago. Born in 2006, Pape will turn 18 in the summer and he will become part of Chelsea project. Diong was at Stamford Bridge just two weeks ago."

Chelsea's home stadium, Stamford Bridge.

Diong could be a star in the making

Earlier this year, Diong represented his country in all four games during the FIFA U17s World Cup before they got knocked out of the competition in the last 16, which shows that he is doing enough at club level to get the individual recognition that he deserves (Transfermarkt – Diong statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 2, Pochettino’s target could also add a completely different dimension to the manager’s options in the centre of the park in the long run with his height, regardless of whether he would be a regular feature of the starting line-up or an impact substitute from the bench.

Furthermore, the teenager even has the versatility to operate slightly higher up as a central midfielder alongside in his usual role sitting just in front of the backline, so his ability to provide cover in another position outside of his own makes him an even more attractive prospect.

Chelsea’s new ownership are already planning to get fresh young faces through the doors in the form of the likes of Kendry Paez who is expected to join in 2025, so it may prove to be another coup if Diong is the next to be added to that list of incomings in the near future, as is set to be the case.

"Possibility" – Romano says "important" Arsenal man could leave with Partey

Respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says the prospect of a "very important" Arsenal player leaving in January is a "possibility".

Arteta's transfer plans

Manager Mikel Arteta looks set to be in with another shout of getting his hands on the Premier League title this season, coming after he narrowly missed out to treble-winning Man City last term.

Arsenal have won eight out of a possible 12 league matches so far, losing just once in that time, with the Gunners bouncing back from that defeat against Newcastle last weekend after a 3-1 triumph over Burnley. However, if they're to maintain their challenge alongside the likes of City and Liverpool, there are some glaring issues which need to be addressed.

Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing a striker, as both Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah stand out as their only natural options right now. Brentford star Ivan Toney is on Arteta's transfer wishlist as a result, according to widespread reports, while some rumours suggest the Spaniard also wants an alternative to Bukayo Saka.

A lack of depth in central midfield could be a problem too, as highlighted by Thomas Partey's injury problems lately. Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz is being eyed by Arsenal to solve this problem, while it is believed Partey could also depart Arsenal in the winter.

The Ghanaian has apparently told Arsenal he wants to leave in January, with murmurs also surrounding goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and his future at the club.

Romano suggests Ramsdale could leave

Ramsdale lost his spot to David Raya after the summer signing arrived on loan from Brentford, despite being Arsenal first choice for a long time before then. This has led to rumours he could depart if his game time doesn't improve, with reliable reporter Romano now providing an update on the former Bournemouth star's situation.

Speaking to the DeBrief podcast, as transcribed by CaughtOffside, it's believed there is a "possibility" Ramsdale leaves Arsenal – but it's also not "guaranteed".

“I think it’s a possibility because he’s not playing but it’s not guaranteed as well," Romano explained.

“It’s not easy … goalkeepers usually move when there’s a domino effect and at the moment we’re not seeing that effect, and in the January transfer window clubs are not usually changing their goalkeeper.

“Ramsdale wants to play more but from what I’m heard he’s also prepared to fight for his place. I can also guarantee that he’s not a target for Chelsea and they’re not going to sign a goalkeeper in January.”

The 25-year-old, despite his lack of involvement lately, is still one of Arsenal's "very important" players according to Arteta. Indeed, the boss insists that he sees every member of his squad that way.

"For sure, he's been exceptional around the place – and especially with the situation," said Arteta on Ramsdale after a 1-0 EFL Cup win over Brentford recently.

"We love him, for sure. We know his character and what he brings to the team and we are happy to have him. Every player is very important. Today he had the opportunity to play and he had a really good game."

Dent makes runs but Malan may be happier

Middlesex’s late promotion psh was held up by Chris Dent but they still enjoyed a reasonable day at Bristol

ECB Reporters Network04-Sep-2018
ScorecardGloucestershire skipper Chris Dent continued his fine form, top-scoring with 82 as Gloucestershire closed on 208 for 7 on day one of the Specsavers County Championship match against Second Division promotion hopefuls Middlesex at Bristol.Made to work hard on an essentially true pitch, Middlesex’s seam bowling unit nevertheless removed the cream of Gloucestershire’s top-order batting on a day when neither side could claim to have fully wrestled control of an absorbing contest. But with the new ball just 13 overs old and further bowler-friendly overhead conditions forecast for day two, Dawid Malan will arguably be the happier of the two captains. In fine form after scoring a double hundred in his last innings, Dent looked to impose himself, staging stands of 63 and 43 with Miles Hammond and Gareth Roderick for the first and fourth wickets respectively after Gloucestershire had been put in beneath heavy cloud cover.Intent upon occupying the crease in the face of nagging line and length from new ball bowlers Tim Murtagh and James Harris, Dent and Hammond demonstrated admirable discipline and concentration in laying solid foundations.Returning to his former county, James Fuller redressed the balance, dismissing Hammond and James Bracey in quick succession either side of lunch. But an increasingly assured Dent found a willing ally in Roderick and Gloucestershire’s third wicket pair raised the scoring rate to put Middlesex on the back foot for the first time.Having mustered defiance aplenty in facing 174 balls and accruing 11 fours to move to within 18 runs of a second successive hundred, Dent was understandably aggrieved when surrendering his wicket in limp fashion.Desperate to effect a breakthrough ahead of the advent of the second new ball, Middlesex skipper Malan introduced his leg breaks in the penultimate over before tea. No doubt lulled into a false sense of security, Dent inexplicably scooped a soft shot to Sam Robson at mid-wicket.Gloucestershire’s prospects of posting an imposing total went with him. Jack Taylor fell to James Harris, edging a catch low to Paul Stirling at second slip, and Roderick departed in the next over, snaffled by Robson at first slip off the bowling of teenage seamer Ethan Bamber as the home side subsided from 149 for 3 to 162 for 6 inside seven overs.Charged with the task of repairing the damage, former Middlesex all-rounder Ryan Higgins and 17-year-old rookie pace bowler Ben Charlesworth, playing in only his third first-class match, were relieved to see the back of the impressive Fuller, who was withdrawn from the attack after suffering an attack of cramp. The seventh wicket pair were still required to negotiate 13 overs against the new ball and Harris removed Higgins, who was held by Stirling in the slip cordon for 24.But Charlesworth, along with Craig Miles, displayed no little resilience in reaching the close without further loss, in the process securing a batting bonus point for their team..
