What is split-innings all about?

Nobody knows quite what to expect from Australia’s new split-innings domestic one-day format – including the players

Brydon Coverdale06-Oct-2010It’s always hard for a new captain to juggle the requirements of one-day cricket, calculating bowling changes, deciding on powerplays and setting restricted fields. But Australia’s new domestic limited-overs format turns all six state leaders into first-time captains. is different, and is learning on the run.The Ryobi One-Day Cup kicks off at the Gabba on Wednesday, when Queensland host Tasmania. There are a range of new rules, but the key changes are that each side bats for 45 overs in blocks of 20 and 25; teams can use 12 players; bowlers may bowl 12 overs; powerplays are abolished; and there is one competition point available for a “first-innings” lead.Even basic cricket principles such as whether teams will prefer to bat first need to be reassessed. Stuart Clark, the acting captain of New South Wales, said it would be a learning process for all concerned.”There is an idea that it might be better to chase first, given that no one really knows what a good score is or how you should go about the game,” Clark said. “But conversely, if you get some runs on the board there could be a lot of pressure as well.”The removal of powerplays takes one tactical decision out of the captain’s hands, but instead there are set periods of field restrictions. Importantly, no more than four fielders can ever be outside the circle, down from the figure of five in regular 50-over cricket, which poses an extra challenge for bowlers.”I think it will be a little bit hard for spinners, with only the four fielders out but they’re going to have to make adjustments to their game and work out the best way of being successful,” Clark said. “Teams will come out and attack different sorts of bowlers, try and be defensive against other types and captains are going to have to set unusual fields at times to try and protect the runs from blowing out.”Tasmania last year sailed to the Ford Ranger Cup title by using two spinners, Jason Krejza and Xavier Doherty, and often opened with one of the slow men. The Tigers captain George Bailey said they would still aim to play the two tweakers, which had worked in practice split-innings fixtures. The new rules

Teams bat 45 overs in stages of 20 overs and 25 overs

Ten wickets per team across the whole match, nor for each stage

Each team’s second batting stage resumes exactly where their first ended

Bowlers may bowl up to 12 overs each

Twelve players per side; teams can bat any 11 and field any 11

Maximum of two bouncers per over

A new ball from each and at the start of the innings

No powerplays

Fielding restrictions: Overs 1-5 = 2 fielders outside the circle; 6-20 = 4 outside; 21-25 = 2 outside, 26-45 = 4 outside

One competition point awarded to team that leads after 20 overs each; a further four points awarded for a win

“We’ve had some good success with our two spinners in trial games, still being able to bowl really successfully,” Bailey said. “It provides a challenge not having the extra bloke out, in terms of boundaries, but it also means there’s an extra bloke in the infield to take catches and create wickets as well. Good bowlers will work it out pretty quickly.”Although Tasmania are the defending champions, Bailey knows that no side will enter this season with an advantage in the one-day competition. He believes one of the major changes will be that the mid-innings break might allow a team to change their tactics halfway through, depending on how their first 20 overs have gone.”You get a lot of options, which is pretty exciting,” Bailey said. “You’ll see games change and ebb and flow a little bit more mid-game. Also having that split innings, the break allows you to regroup as a team and chat about how your plans are going.”The halfway mark also provides a notable incentive, as whichever team finishes with more runs after their first 20 overs will win one point, retained even if they go on to lose the game. An extra four points are then awarded for the outright victory, so teams will need to be careful not to get into too much trouble chasing the first point.”There’s one point up for grabs at the 20-over mark, so that’s 10 points across the season,” Victoria’s captain, Cameron White, said. “That could be something that teams will play differently, but it could be pretty important, I think.”Team selection will also provide a fascinating insight into a side’s tactics, with 12 men allowed to take part in the match, though only 11 may bat. And because bowlers can send down 12 overs each and teams can therefore get by using only four bowlers, sides are more likely to choose specialist batsmen and bowlers rather than “handy” allrounders.”The genuine bits-and-pieces allrounder is probably dead now,” the Tasmania batsman Ed Cowan said. “But the guy that can bowl you eight or nine or ten overs and bat in your top seven is invaluable still, because it means you can play an extra batter.”Whether any or all of the changes add to the game’s appeal remains to be seen. Even Cricket Australia are unsure of what the future holds for one-day cricket. But for the next five months, this is the one-day format of choice on Australia’s domestic scene. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.”Everyone knows that one-day cricket has been in decline for many years now,” Clark said. “Whether the problems is as bad as [they say] it is, we don’t really know. But Cricket Australia are taking a step forward to try and change it. At the end of the year it will either be a real success or maybe we’ll have to go back to the drawing board.”

According to , the Rossoneri have entered negotiations with United to bring Hojlund to San Siro on loan for the 2025-26 season. The Red Devils are open to letting the Danish striker leave after just two years in England, where he has struggled for form. The arrivals of Matheus Cunha and potentially Benjamin Sesko have further reduced his chances of regular playing time. Milan are willing to cover his full salary of around €4 million per year but are seeking to limit the loan fee.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 22-year-old joined United from Atalanta in 2023 for €70m (£60m/$77m) plus bonuses, arriving with high expectations after a breakout season in Serie A. However, inconsistent performances, injuries and tactical changes have hampered his progress. Milan see him as a strong fit for their attack and a lower-cost alternative to other targets like Dusan Vlahovic, whose signing would be more expensive and riskier financially.

Discussions are centred around the loan fee, with United initially asking for a higher sum than Milan are willing to pay. The Italian club want the figure to stay below €6m to avoid committing themselves to a compulsory purchase, which could bring the total cost closer to €35m (£30m/$38m), reports . While Hojlund is Milan’s top target, other options such as Nicolas Jackson and Goncalo Ramos are being monitored in case talks stall.

Brits dazzles with 116 but rain washes out first SA vs SL ODI

Her 128-ball innings lifted the hosts to 270 for 6 in East London

Firdose Moonda09-Apr-2024No result Tazmin Brits’ second ODI century was scored in vain as the first ODI between South Africa and Sri Lanka was washed out in East London. After a delayed start from a wet outfield, Sri Lanka were set a target of 271 but only faced 6.5 overs before rain forced the fixture to be called off. Sri Lanka were 23 without loss at the time.Brits and Laura Wolvaardt were off to a strong start and put on 94 for the first wicket, largely unthreatened by a Sri Lankan side that chose to bowl first. Brits was the early aggressor, kept the bulk of the strike and allowed Wolvaardt to find her tempo. They posted 55 in the first Powerplay and Sri Lanka looked uninspired, with the ball and in the field.Brits reached 50 off 56 balls and the partnership grew to 94 when, against the run of play, Wolvaardt was caught behind off Kavisha Dilhari. Anneke Bosch, playing in her 17th match, was in at No.3 and shared in a 70-run second wicket stand with Brits and brought up her third highest ODI score in her 17th match. Her dismissal brought the struggling Sune Luus to the crease and she scored 22 off 30 balls before being caught and bowled by Sugandika Kumari and sparking a mini-late collapse. South Africa lost 3 wickets for 28 runs, with Chamari Athapaththu creating pressure at one end and the offspinners Kumari and Oshadi Ranasinghe benefitting with wickets at the other. In that time, Brits brought up her 100 off 118 balls, her second this summer after a maiden century against Bangladesh, and was also dismissed which meant she could not finish the innings off. Before the match, Wolvaardt stressed the need for South Africa to push past totals of 170 into the 200s and Nadine de Klerk, having now embraced her role as a finisher, took that to heart. She scored 34 off 22 balls, including the innings’ only six to push South Africa to 270.That meant Sri Lanka had to pull off their highest successful ODI chase to win, after a previous best of 257 for 7 against India in 2018. They were steady in pursuit and saw off Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka’s opening spells and did not have the opportunity to test themselves against South Africa’s change bowlers. The second match takes place on Saturday in Kimberley, where conditions are expected to be drier.

Dube: I wanted to implement what I've learnt from Dhoni on finishing games

He credits both Dhoni and Rohit for backing him on the big stage

Takeaways – Dube makes a splash, India go bold with their balance

India allrounder Shivam Dube has credited his CSK captain MS Dhoni for the transformation in his attitude and approach after he returned to the Indian team with a match-winning 60 off 40 balls in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali.Dube’s half-century and bowling figures of 1 for 9 from two overs headlined India’s six-wicket victory as he returned to the T20I XI for the first time since the Asian Games in October last year.”When I came to bat, I wanted to implement what I have learnt from MS Dhoni about finishing games,” Dube told the host broadcaster. “I keep speaking to Mahi . He tells me how to tackle different situations. He has given me two, three tips and rated my batting. So, I feel if he rates my batting then I’ll keep playing well. My confidence went up because of that.”In a T20 it’s important for a batter to finish games off while chasing so doing that for the team felt very good,” he told bcci.tv.Related

Rohit checks most boxes on T20I comeback, but not the big one

After the Asian Games, Dube was picked for the home T20Is against Australia but did not get a game and was left out of the away series against South Africa, where India played without a pace-bowling allrounder. Dube could be seen as a back-up for Hardik Pandya, who is currently injured, for the T20 World Cup.”It feels very special because I’m back in the Indian team after a long time. This was important,” he said. “Both [Dhoni and Rohit] allow me to bat higher in the order. There’s a lot of work to be done and I know they will back me and want me to do well. So, that makes me feel a lot more positive.”When asked what message Rohit gave him, Dube said: “He told me only one thing, ‘keep playing this way, be positive in your game. You know you can score from anywhere and you can win us the game from anywhere’.”Dube bowled the ninth and 12th overs and dismissed Ibrahim Zadran for 25 with his second ball. His first over went for just two runs and the second for seven.”The changes have not come suddenly,” Dube said of his bowling. “In the off-season, I worked a lot on my fitness. After that, I bowled a lot in domestic cricket too so things kept improving. I was able to find the right areas and also generated decent pace.”The T20Is against Afghanistan is India’s last series before the T20 World Cup in June, though the selection for that could depend on IPL performances. Dube, however, was not thinking too far ahead.”It’s a dream for every cricketer to contribute and help his country win,” he said. “So, that’s (World Cup selection) always at the back of the mind. But there’s a lot of time left for it, so I want to take it step by step.”

Sturdy Belgian defence broken down in 41st minuteRed Flames lose steam in stilted second halfWullaert unable to turn half chances into goalFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportTELL ME MORE

Belgium were arguably the stronger of the two teams for the bulk of the first half, frustrating their opponents with a compact 5-4-1 formation. Even committing so many resources at the back, the Belgians were able to break at pace, and had created the only clear-cut chance of the game until the very end of the half. The Red Flames record scorer and captain Tessa Wullaert rippling the side netting of Laura Giuliani's goal in the 41st minute.

Italy took the lead just a few moments later. The previously regimented Belgium defence was compromised when left wing back Laura Deloose tried to break on a 50:50 as Italy looked to switch the play. She was pipped to the ball by Lucia Di Guglielmo, who in turn found Caruso at the edge of the area in acres of space. The midfielder took a moment to steady her feet, before powering fizzing, curling effort into the top corner.

Belgium again looked the brighter of the two sides after the break, but despite finding Wullaert in the Italian box on multiple occasions, again the Red Flames struggled to fashion any clear-cut chances. It was Italy who almost doubled their lead somewhat against the run of play in the 65th minute, when Christina Girelli flicked a near post cross towards the Belgian goal, forcing an instinctive save out of Lisa Lichtfus.

Italy frustrated their opponents, breaking Belgium's momentum with repeated injury stoppages of questionable authenticity. The stilted rhythm frustrated the Belgians, and emboldened the Italians, who again should have doubled their lead when Michela Cambiaghi fired wide from the edge of the box in the 80th minute. She was again denied a few moments later, as her curled effort was tipped round the post by the impressive Lichtfus.

With no clear-cut chances in they dying embers, Belgium will rue a missed chance to gain a foothold in this tournament.

Bayern Munich midfielder Caruso took her goal with composure and power. It was a moment of brilliance in a first half that was lacking on quality in the final third.

THE BIG LOSER

Laura Deloose decided to come and get the ball in the middle of the park in the build-up to Italy's goal, she simply had to win it. Her decision set off a chain reaction of poor decisions by the Belgium defence, allowing Caruso to ghost into a shooting position. In a game plan built on defensive discipline, a momentary lapse in concentration was The Red Flames undoing.

In warm and humid Delhi, it could be South Africa's batters vs Sri Lanka's spinners

Big Picture – Delhi conditions could be Sri Lanka’s friend

Sri Lanka could hardly have picked a tougher opponent to face first up at the World Cup than South Africa. The Sri Lankans come into this game with big question marks over their batting and have an injury-weakened bowling attack; South Africa, in contrast, seem to be a well-oiled machine, primed for the flat tracks this World Cup is expected to offer.Where South Africa might have some concerns is in their bowling. With Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala ruled out with injury, they are lacking a bit of bite up front and at the death. Then, in the spin department, too, with just Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi available, their options are not as varied as is the case with some other teams (such as Sri Lanka). But they more than make up for this with a batting line-up in fine fettle.Related

  • Simons hopes Rabada and Coetzee get into the heads of opposition

  • Scriptless Sri Lanka put hopes on hold

  • Spunky Sri Lanka out to prove heydays are not behind them

  • When Miller is comfortable with his hitting, he won't stop

Indeed, while Sri Lanka fret about the lack of power-hitters at six and seven, South Africa have stacked their line-up with them. At the top, there’s Quinton de Kock, and if he doesn’t get you, well, then there’s the middle order of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. And this is all before you get to the lower-middle order, which has Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo. Of them, only Phehlukwayo strikes at less than 90 (88.04) in ODIs.Sri Lanka have just a solitary batter in the top six hitting at above 90, Kusal Perera. But he’s just returning from injury and it’s not certain he can churn out runs consistently over 50 overs. In terms of others who can score big runs fast, Kusal Mendis is the obvious shout, but even with his blistering 158 laying a platform, Sri Lanka’s lower-middle order wasn’t able to capitalise against Afghanistan in their warm-up game. There is solidity after that in Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva, but if quick runs are needed, there really only is Dasun Shanaka, who has been in such woeful recent form that he was nearly dropped from the squad altogether.Fortunately for Sri Lanka, this game is taking place in Delhi. On a pitch that is usually slow and crumbly, Sri Lanka have the right bowlers. In their last 15 games, Sri Lanka have bowled out the opposition in 14. Sure, the ease with which both Bangladesh and Afghanistan brushed them aside in the warm-ups highlighted the task their bowlers are likely to face, but in Delhi, they might just have their way. They will however have to do so without their star man. Maheesh Theekshana has linked up with the squad late, but this game comes too soon for him in his recovery from a hamstring tear.* This means the spin bowling onus will be squarely on Dunith Wellalage, Dushan Hemantha and Dhananjaya.South Africa meanwhile won’t have fond memories of Delhi, with their last outing there in October 2022 seeing them skittled for 99. Though if the surface turns out more like the one that was in place during their T20I chase of 212 just a few months prior to that, Sri Lanka will have their work cut out for them.

Form guide

South Africa WWWLL
Sri Lanka LWLWW

In the spotlight: Aiden Markram and Dhananjaya de Silva

While Klaasen is undoubtedly South Africa’s man of the moment, ticking along with him has been Aiden Markram, who is in the midst of the best year of his ODI career. His 11 innings in 2023 have so far brought 577 runs at 64.11 and a strike rate of 119.70 – significantly above his career figures of 35.42 and 96.35 – to go with an equally impressive record in T20Is and Tests. He has the ability and resolve to navigate slow turners, which could prove crucial in Delhi, especially in the middle overs, where Sri Lanka throttle with spin so well. That Markram has a solid record against Sri Lanka – second only to his record against Australia among Test-playing nations – is a bonus. If the Delhi surface is conducive to turn, Markram’s experience could be massive.Sri Lanka will have to do without spin whiz Maheesh Theekshana in their World Cup opener•Getty Images

Sri Lanka’s spate of injuries means that Dhananjaya de Silva will likely start this tournament with an unexpectedly critical role in terms of providing team balance. With the bat, coming in at six, he will be tasked with providing impetus in the latter overs alongside his out-of-sorts captain – a role he’s not exactly suited for considering his career ODI strike rate of 78.80, but one that Sri Lanka will need him to settle into quickly. Then with ball, with Theekshana ruled out, Dunith Wellalage still fairly green and Shanaka potentially only fit enough to bat, there’s every chance he’ll be required to bowl 10 overs – something he’s done just 11 times over 67 innings.

Team news

South Africa’s batting pretty much picks itself when everyone is fully fit, but it’s in the bowling where there’s a bit of uncertainty. While Maharaj is a shoo-in, if they do choose to go with Shamsi as an extra spin option, Phelukwayo could make way.South Africa (probable XI): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Gerald Coetzee, 9 Andile Phelukwayo/Tabraiz Shamsi, 10 Keshav Maharaj, 11 Kagiso RabadaPerera and Shanaka have been passed fit after missing Sri Lanka’s last warm-up, but Theekshana misses out. This means Dushan Hemantha is likely to fill in once more.Sri Lanka (probable XI): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 8 Dunith Wellalage, 9 Dushan Hemantha, 10 Dilshan Madushanka, 11 Lahiru Kumara1:58

Spin-heavy Sri Lanka can sneak into knockouts

Pitch and conditions

Spin in particular could prove useful in Delhi, unlike in other parts of India, and it’s traditionally not been a high-scoring venue – 300 had been topped only twice in ODIs, and last in 2011. The weather is expected to be hot and humid with highs of around 37 degrees Celsius, so batting first might be the play.

Stats and trivia

  • The last time Sri Lanka played in Delhi, in 2009, the match was called off because of a dangerous surface
  • In 26 ODIs, only twice have 300-plus scores been recorded at the venue
  • In six World Cup games between them, South Africa have won four, including the last three, with one ending in a tie. Sri Lanka’s solitary win came in their first exchange, in 1992

Kashif Ali, Ben Cox fifties set up Worcestershire win over Durham

Worcestershire Rapids made a winning start to their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign defeating Durham by 42 runs at Seat Unique Riverside.Kashif Ali was the star of the Rapids’ batting effort as posted 76 to anchor the innings. A brilliant hat-trick from Liam Trevaskis threatened to derail Worcestershire’s total as he become the first Durham player to achieve the feat in List A cricket. But Ben Cox added a brisk half-century to propel the Rapids beyond the 300-run mark. The home side made a bright start in their chase of 319 through a knock of 79 from Graham Clark. But, Josh Baker and Brett D’Oliveria combined with six wickets apiece to dismantle the Durham line-up. Jonathan Bushnell took the game into the dying stages, but the Rapids held their nerve to close out a comfortable win.The Rapids were put in by Durham skipper Alex Lees and D’Oliveira presented a chance from the first ball that Bushnell put down at point. The same fielder shelled another tough opportunity to send the opener on his way, and D’Oliveira settled in alongside Azhar Ali to reach fifty inside the eighth over. The home side responded as Paul Coughlin removed D’ Oliveira, but the bowlers found life tough in the early stages. Ollie Gibson overstepped twice, bowled a wide, and was smashed for a six by Azhar Ali in a tumultuous second over. But the Durham seamer regained his composure to skittle the former Pakistan international. The arrival of spin then put the clamps on the Rapids’ run rate as George Drissell and Trevaskis settled into a tight line and length, which brought the wicket of Rob Jones. But, Kashif and Jake Libby provided the foundation of the Worcestershire innings with a stand worth 82 for the fourth wicket.Kashif made his intentions known early on as he took the attack to Trevaskis and planted the ball over the rope with a dismissive strike. He accelerated the innings operating at a run-a-ball and reached his second List A fifty with his second maximum. After Libby fell for 45, Kashif consolidated before priming himself to push forward again in the final 10 overs, beginning with two sixes to take Drissell’s final over for 19.But Trevaskis created Durham history and turned the momentum of the Rapids’ chase with a sensational hat-trick. The left-arm spinner ended Kashif Ali’s brilliant knock of 76 before clean bowling Matthew Waite and Joe Leach to rip through the lower order. Worcestershire needed to scramble to push for 300 after being reduced to 248 for 7, and Cox delivered with a quick-fire 57 from 49 to steer his team to a competitive total.Durham made quick runs in their response as Clark found his rhythm with early boundaries. Lees appeared to be finding his range against Gibbon, but the Rapids man made the breakthrough to send the Durham skipper on his way for 12.Clark and David Bedingham formed a solid partnership for the second wicket to stabilise the innings. Clark worked his way to a deserved fifty to continue his impressive form from just 44 balls. The two players were set against the Rapids pace bowlers, but the introduction of Baker tempted Bedingham to take on the boundary where he was caught on the fence for 31.Clark fell into the same trap after surviving two dropped chances, presenting Baker with his second wicket through the quick work of Cox behind the stumps. The loss of the experienced duo allowed the Rapids to turn the screw as Ben McKinney, Michael Jones and Trevaskis fell cheaply to send the required rate above seven runs per over courtesy of impressive bowling from the leg-spin of D’Oliveira.Bushnell gave Durham a glimmer of hope with his first List A fifty to take the game into the final four overs, but the visitors closed out the victory with late wickets.

83% duels won: Rangers star has just made himself as undroppable as Raskin

Glasgow Rangers closed the gap between themselves and their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table to 13 points with a 3-2 win on Sunday.

The Light Blues secured all three points in a dramatic afternoon in Glasgow to ensure that they did not go 19 points behind Celtic, even if another league title for their local rivals feels inevitable still.

Goals from Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande gave the Ibrox giants a commanding lead at the break, in front of the away fans at Parkhead, but it all came crumbling down at the start of the second half.

Daizen Maeda pulled one back just after the break before Reo Hatate eventually found an equaliser to make it 2-2, slotting past Jack Butland with relative ease.

Up step Hamza Igamane, though, to win all three points for Barry Ferguson’s team with a thunderous volley past Kasper Schmeichel in the 88th minute.

Whilst the Morocco international stole the headlines with his sensational winning goal at Parkhead, it was central midfielder Raskin who deserves most of the praise for the club’s performance.

Nicolas Raskin's performance against Celtic

The Belgium international started at the base of the midfield for the Light Blues, with Diomande and Connor Barron alongside him in the middle of the park, and he bossed the first-half.

It was his terrific header from James Tavernier’s corner that opened the scoring for the Gers after just four minutes, as he got the run on Jeffrey Schlupp to glance his effort into the far bottom corner.

Raskin, then, played a vital role in the second goal for Rangers by making a well-timed run into the box to flick on a cross that teed up Diomande to slot the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The Belgian dynamo, therefore, was the key figure behind the 2-0 lead at the break thanks to his direct involvement in both of the goals from a midfield position.

As you can see in the table above, though, Raskin’s play out of possession was just as important for the Gers, as he constantly closed down and pressed the Celtic players to ensure that they could not dictate the flow of the game.

It was a stunning all-round performance from the 24-year-old central midfielder at Parkhead, and one that proved that he is undroppable for the Light Blues.

Why Nicolas Raskin is undroppable

The former Standard Liege star has started 22 of his 26 appearances in the Premiership so far this season, and should start whenever he is available to do so.

Raskin’s qualities in and out of possession make him such a vital part of Ferguson’s side, as they did when Philippe Clement was in charge, as he has the ability to break up play and offer a physical presence in midfield, whilst still having the technical skills to control a match.

Raskin

Of all current Rangers players, the Belgian star is averaging the most tackles and interceptions (3.8) combined per match in the Premiership this season. This suggests that he is the best player in the squad at winning challenges to prevent opposition teams from creating chances.

Raskin has also created six ‘big chances’ and registered five assists in the top-flight to date. Only Tavernier (seven) has recorded more assists than the midfield star, which shows that he is also an influential player on the ball for the Scottish giants.

He is not the only Rangers star who should be deemed undroppable by Ferguson after his showing against Celtic, however, as central defender Dujon Sterling put in a noteworthy performance.

Why Dujon Sterling should be undroppable

Ferguson has lined Rangers up in a 3-4-2-1 formation in the last three matches, in both legs against Fenerbahce and against the Hoops, and that has opened up an opportunity for the English defender to stake a claim for his position in the team.

The Light Blues signed Sterling from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, under Michael Beale, and he has yet to nail down a main role in the side to date.

As you can see in the table above, the versatile defender has been utilised in a multitude of positions by previous Rangers managers, but Ferguson may have stumbled upon the best role for him.

Sterling played the right-sided centre-back role in the back three of the manager’s 3-4-2-1 system, which is essentially a combination of playing right-back, centre-back, and right midfield at times – hence why it suited him so well.

The 25-year-old star provided a dominant presence out of possession in that set-up, as he won 83% (5/6) of his defensive duels throughout the match.

Sterling ended the match without being dribbled past a single time by a Celtic player, whilst the former Chelsea man also made three tackles, one interception, one block, and three clearances.

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

The Rangers defender also had the best defensive moment of the match, for either side, when he unbelievably flicked a goal-bound effort from Maeda up and over the bar. He readjusted his body brilliantly to turn and make a last-ditch intervention to stop the Celtic man from scoring.

With this fantastic performance in mind, and how the right-sided centre-back position seems perfectly suited to his versatility, Sterling should now be undroppable in Ferguson’s new system moving forward for the rest of the season.

The right-footed titan must, now, ensure that he can continue to deliver quality performances in that position to ensure that he finally finds a regular home on the pitch at Ibrox.

Man Utd propose Hojlund plus cash deal for £62m "best striker in the world"

Manchester United have now made a proposal of Rasmus Hojlund plus cash to sign “the best striker in the world”, and his club would be open to a deal of that nature, according to a journalist.

Hojlund struggling in the Premier League

Hojlund has regularly found himself on the scoresheet in the Europa League, netting five times in the league phase, but the majority of the Dane’s goals came against relatively weak opposition in Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen.

The 22-year-old has struggled against tougher teams in the Premier League, netting just two goals in 23 appearances this term and failing to find the back of the net since scoring in the 3-2 defeat against Nottingham Forest back in December.

Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has also been an unreliable source of goals, scoring six in 42 games in all competitions, so it is little wonder Man United are looking to bring in a new striker when summer comes around.

Man Utd could now move for "outstanding" £84m striker instead of Osimhen

The Red Devils have identified a potential alternative to the Nigerian.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen has emerged as a target for the Red Devils, and journalist Luca Cerchione has now dropped an interesting update on their pursuit of the Nigerian, suggesting a proposal has already been made.

Cerchione said: “Keep an eye on the Rasmus Højlund trail, which was reported to me last week.

“United have proposed Højlund to Napoli as part of the deal that could bring Victor Osimhen to Manchester United. In order for Osimhen’s price tag to drop, they will also talk about Højlund, who Conte likes a lot. We’ll see, we’ll follow this lead. €40m, plus Højlund, would be a deal in favour of Napoli.”

Osimhen is known to have a £62m release clause in his Napoli contract, but United are seemingly keen on a deal of a different nature, which would allow them to get an underperforming striker off the books.

Osimhen could be "the best striker in the world"

It would be a shame to see Hojlund leave United so soon, considering he is still young at 22 and may go on to become a top striker, but Ruben Amorim’s side cannot pass up the opportunity to sign the Nigeria international, should Napoli be keen on a swap deal.

The 26-year-old was lauded as “the best striker in the world” by members of the media during his time with Napoli, and he has since gone on to impress on loan at Galatasaray this season, netting 23 goals in 29 games in all competitions.

There are also signs of interest on the player’s end, with previous reports suggesting the Galatasaray star is open to talks over a move to Old Trafford this summer, indicating a move could be a real possibility.

It is imperative Man United sign a striker this summer, given their current options’ struggles in front of goal this season, so it is exciting news they have now made a proposal for one of the world’s best.
