Clement can ditch Dessers by unleashing Rangers’ very own Duracell Bunny

Glasgow Rangers face Benfica at Ibrox on Thursday evening with a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League up for grabs.

Philippe Clement may have to make a few changes to his starting XI from the team that defeated Hibs 2-0 at Easter Road in the Scottish Cup on the weekend, as Dujon Sterling and Ross McCausland both came off with injuries.

The Belgian manager won't just be mixing things up on the wings either, with a couple of changes afoot in other areas of the side, as Cyriel Dessers has failed to impress during his previous two starts…

The 29-year-old was given the nod to start against the Portuguese side last week, but he failed to have any meaningful impact during the game.

The Nigerian striker was barely involved, taking only 17 touches, and completing eight passes during his 76 minutes on the field as Rangers had to go down other avenues in search for goals.

Indeed, he failed with both of his dribble attempts, did not take a single shot all game while winning just two of his eight contested duels, and was brought off for Kemar Roofe with just 15 minutes left.

Roofe may have had his injury issues recently, but there is no doubt Clement must give him a start this evening at Ibrox.

Kemar Roofe’s season in numbers

Roofe looked lively during his cameo last week, while he was also given some minutes against Hibs over the weekend as he is building up his fitness.

The centre-forward has missed large chunks of the season due to several injury problems and with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, he could well be entering the final few months of his spell in Glasgow.

Kemar Roofe

In his 19 appearances this term, Roofe has scored twice and added an assist. One of his goals came in the Europa League back in December as he scored the winner against Real Betis, which meant the Gers topped their group.

It is in Europe that he has impressed the most. Despite starting just once in the competition, Roofe has created a big chance, averaged 0.5 key passes per game, completed 0.5 successful dribbles per game (0.5) while also winning 3.5 total duels per match.

These stats should give Clement the licence to finally unleash him into the starting XI and if he is ready, there is no doubt the striker could cause problems for the Benfica defence.

The £26k-per-week striker was dubbed a “Duracell bunny” by his former manager Steven Gerrard due to his incredible work rate and hunger during matches, and this is exactly what Clement needs on a big night in Europe.

Kemar Roofe

A win will send the Gers through to the quarter-finals of the event for the second time in three years and not only will it boost the coffers, but also give the club some momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.

Clement has done a wonderful job since arriving, with the Benfica tie proving to be the toughest test yet.

Jack Leach hospitalised by bout of gastroenteritis

Jack Leach’s tour of New Zealand has reached an unhappy ending after he was admitted to hospital suffering from gastroenteritis.Leach, who was left out of the side for the second Test after England decided to field an extra seamer, reported feeling unwell after the first session of play on the second day in Hamilton. After initial observation from the medical team, it was decided to take him to hospital. He was admitted and is expected to stay there on Saturday night.Leach’s condition may be complicated a little by the fact he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease – an inflammatory bowel disorder – as a teenager. He admitted “it’s something I’m always battling a bit” in an interview with the BBC a few months ago.”If I was having a bad day with the ball, it would be nice to be able to blame it on the Crohn’s,” he said, “but I’ve never done that. If there’s a day when I’m struggling, I know how to fight through.”If I was in the middle of a big flare-up, I would feel at a physical disadvantage compared to other players, but I haven’t had one of those since I was about 16.”It’s something I’m always battling with a little bit, even if I am very lucky to not be affected as badly as some people can be.”

Sheffield Wednesday must soon ditch the club’s fourth-highest earner

Picking up two wins from their last three Championship games, there could still be light at the end of the tunnel for Sheffield Wednesday's survival chances in the second tier when all hope had begun to look lost.

Ike Ugbo has been a standout performer since joining the Owls ranks in January from Troyes on loan, netting his third goal for Wednesday already at Millwall this weekend as Danny Rohl's men pulled off an impressive 2-0 away day win.

With Ugbo coming in and becoming a star man up top, Michael Smith's importance to the Wednesday cause has significantly lessened.

As a result, the second-tier side might well live to regret not trying to offload Smith with more vigour in January as the 32-year-old gradually bleeds the club more and more courtesy of his excessive pay packet despite now being on the fringes.

Michael Smith's salary at Sheffield Wednesday

Smith is currently the fourth highest earner at Hillsborough despite now primarily being an option Rohl brings on from the off the bench, coming in at a handsome £17.5k-per-week which could be better used elsewhere based on his output this campaign.

Rumoured fervently with a move to reunite with his ex-Rotherham United boss Paul Warne at Derby County in January, Smith only has three goals next to his name when he's been in the thick of the action for the Owls away from all this talk.

In stark contrast, Ugbo – from just three games – has managed to match Smith's total for Wednesday with the ex-Chelsea attacker on seven goals for the campaign overall after having his Cardiff City loan cut short to relocate to South Yorkshire.

Rohl and Co will see the deal to land Ugbo on loan until the end of the season as a masterstroke, with the 25-year-old centre-forward a more affordable option to keep on the books than the waning Smith.

Moreover, his clinical edge in front of goal means he comes out on top over the lacklustre 32-year-old attacker.

Smith's wage compared to the rest of the Wednesday squad

Smith's bulky pay packet means he's currently one of the highest earners in the Owls squad, with the likes of Barry Bannan unsurprisingly above him on an even heftier £24k-per-week according to Capology.

The likes of Jeff Hendrick and Kristian Pedersen are also burning holes in the Owls' pocket with their wages on loan – with the Newcastle United loanee specifically coming in at an eye-watering £35k-per-week – but Ugbo thankfully comes in as a cheaper option than this expensively priced duo.

Ugbo boasts a reasonable £15k per week wage playing for Wednesday in comparison, justifying his salary with his recent golden streak in front of goal compared to a quiet Smith.

Smith's last two goals for the Owls came all the way back in October, with the likes of Anthony Musaba – who is on a significantly less extortionate wage than the 32-year-old forward at £9k per week – leading the goalscoring charts at Hillsborough with six goals away from the ex-Millers man.

ike-ugbo-troyes-ligue-one

Wednesday will need to look at offloading a lot of their ageing high earners if the South Yorkshire side succumb to relegation come the end of the season, with Smith high up the potential list to ditch.

Ugbo could well be kept around permanently on the contrary based on his current goalscoring heroics, as Rohl and Co aim to assemble a squad for the long-term that doesn't cost excessive amounts.

Paulistinha Day! Título Estadual do Corinthians contra o Palmeiras, no estádio do rival, completa três anos

'It's absolutely outrageous' – Premier League urged to 'EXPEL' Manchester City following launch of legal action that 'brings the game into complete disrepute'

The Premier League has been urged to "expel" Manchester City following their launch of legal action that "brings the game into complete disrepute".

Simon Jordan slammed CityWants them to be thrown out of the top-flightCity claim to be innocent and victims of discriminationWHAT HAPPENED?

The current titleholders filed a 165-page legal document against the Premier League over their Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules. These rules prevent clubs from setting the price of deals with companies linked to their owners, which City argues are unlawful.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

City’s legal team has claimed that the club is a victim of discrimination and argue that the regulations, which are supported by rival teams, are specifically designed to curb their success – which they assert, constitutes a "tyranny of the majority." However, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan expressed his astonishment at the latest development and urged the top-flight authorities to throw out the reigning champions from the competition.

WHAT JORDAN SAID

In an interview with, Jordan stated: "I am gobsmacked with what Manchester City are doing. I think it's absolutely outrageous. They're trying to bully the headmaster when the headmaster is trying to expel them. It's an absolute disgrace and it brings the game into complete disrepute. If I was an owner in the Premier League now, I would be campaigning to expel them. I think fans should be very scared of the behaviour they’re showing."

DID YOU KNOW?

Jordan’s sentiments were echoed by his co-host Graeme Souness, who added that the situation reflects poorly on English football. "Manchester City are challenging the entire fabric of our game," Souness said. "They’re going as far as they possibly can to say, 'you’re all wrong and we’re going to sue you and prove you’re wrong'. How are the rest of the Premier League going to view Manchester City right now? Someone who will be laughing right now is the President of the Spanish FA, because he’s been going on about the power in the Premier League for a long time now and the wrongs of our game. It’s a sad time for English football."

Six reasons why Man City are set up for future WSL success even if title tilt falls short

Emma Hayes and Chelsea may well be crowned champions of England again on Saturday, but the Cityzens should be excited for the future

For a team like Manchester City to go eight years without winning a league title is almost an eternity, and it seems that wait will continue for the women’s team this weekend, unless the final day of the Women’s Super League season has a few more twists and turns in store to cap what has already been a rollercoaster of a title race.

With two games to play, it was in Man City’s hands. Liverpool did them a huge favour in beating Chelsea at the start of May, meaning the Cityzens only needed four points from those last two fixtures. But, just a few days later, that all changed in a matter of hours. First, City conceded two goals in two minutes at home to Arsenal to throw away three points, and then Chelsea took advantage by putting eight past already-relegated Bristol City. It meant the Blues overtook their title rivals in the goal difference column that will decide the destination of the WSL title if both teams win on Saturday.

It will be a disappointment if the trophy is lifted by Chelsea at Old Trafford, of all places, then, rather than by City at Villa Park, as Gareth Taylor’s side were in firm control of this battle for the crown. Yet, to step back and look at the bigger picture is to admire the huge steps forward the Manchester outfit have taken this year.

After finishing a distant 11 and nine points off top spot in the last two seasons, respectively, City are right back up there again, and all signs point to them being extremely competitive over the next few years, too, as they look to finally bring that WSL title back to the north west.

  • Getty

    Talent for the future

One big reason why that is the case is because of the young talent in this Man City squad. The average age of the starting XI Taylor has favoured in the latter stages of this season is 25 years old, featuring five players younger than that. It means that many at the club are still to play their very best football and are only going to get better.

This year alone, you have been able to see improvements. Khiara Keating (19), Mary Fowler (21) and Jess Park (22) have all been regular starters for the first time in City colours, and they have got better and better with each week.

Deadline day in the January transfer window was a huge indication of how much City are planning for that future too, as it saw them swoop for Tara O'Hanlon, a senior Ireland international at 19 years of age; Poppy Pritchard, a talented teenage striker who had been thriving for Durham's Under-21s; and Laura Blindkilde Brown, the 20-year-old from Aston Villa who has already become a regular off the bench since her arrival.

This is a group that is going to grow as one and improve over time, so the club will hope that to still be in the title chase on the final day of this WSL season is only a sign of things to come.

  • Getty

    Stability

And that group looks set to stay together, too, as the club has been active in tying down key players to new contracts. From that aforementioned preferred XI of Taylor’s, seven names have signed new deals in the past 18 months, as has the coach himself. It gives him stability to work with and means there’s no need for some of the chopping and changing of previous years.

The summer of 2022 was a hectic one for this team, with star names such as Georgia Stanway, Caroline Weir, Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh all moving on, while the experienced trio of Karen Bardsley, Jill Scott and Ellen White retired. It meant City had to bring in a lot of new faces, too, but Taylor noted at the time that every top team would have to have that busy summer eventually, to refresh the squad, and his had it then, setting them up for the future.

  • Manchester City

    Good work behind the scenes

A year on from that chaotic transfer window, City appointed Nils Nielsen as director of football on the women’s side, a new role, and it is the former Denmark and Switzerland head coach who has overseen a lot of their smooth operations. He has not come in and started ripping things up; he’s simply done his job in an efficient manner, and that is reflected in the business City have done in the past year.

Nielsen faced the media when he was appointed in the summer of 2023, after the Cityzens had missed out on qualifying for the Women’s Champions League. A fourth-placed finish represented a really disappointing season, but the new man was calm about the process moving forward, an attitude which has aged well.

“Everything doesn't have to happen this summer,” Nielsen said. “We are looking more in the coming year. Where do we need to get stronger? What do we need to develop in the squad? What do we have already? The main task in the beginning here has been the re-signing of players and that we have done a lot of work on.

“The long-term target is clearly that we want to be back on top, that we want to be the number one club in England,” he added. “That cannot happen overnight. We cannot just say, 'Okay, we want that so it's going to happen', but we can work towards that goal and we can take the little steps every day in that direction. That is what we're going to do also with recruitment, with little changes in the set-up and stuff that all will make a good situation better so we can go back to the winning ways.”

    Attractive project

Having that good structure, doing that forward-planning and generally knowing what the team is working towards is something that certainly helps the players feel like they are in the right place, too, and makes those contract renewals easier.

So many of those players who have chosen to stay at Man City have described it as the best place for them to continue to progress, and that is a huge compliment to the work that the club does off the pitch and behind the scenes, especially considering some of those players were linked with huge teams. It only helps with recruitment, too, as the club looks to add to this already talented and promising squad.

Farke axes Piroe & unleashes a surprise in Leeds predicted lineup v Birmingham

Daniel Farke will want an immediate reaction to Leeds United's recent slump against Birmingham City on Monday, starting 2024 off with a bang after two defeats on the spin to close out 2023.

Only managing one shot on target in the 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion last match, the Whites will need to step their game up against Wayne Rooney's Blues to pick up a much-needed victory back at Elland Road.

Farke freshened up his side for the game away at the Baggies and could do the exact same against Birmingham on New Year's Day, with two potential changes on the cards in this predicted XI…

1 GK – Karl Darlow

karl-darlow-newcastle-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-illan-meslier-farke

Karl Darlow will remain in-between the sticks for the game versus the Blues tomorrow, Farke having to rely on the ex-Newcastle United man in goal again with Illan Meslier still serving a suspension.

Making just one save in the West Brom loss – as per Sofascore – the Leeds number 28 will hope he can play a key role in the Whites pulling off a win against Birmingham.

2 RB – Djed Spence

Leeds United's loan defender Djed Spence.

Djed Spence will also be retained by his German manager for the game versus Birmingham, the former Nottingham Forest figure energetic and lively during an hour spell versus the Baggies last match.

Spence would notch up a goalline clearance in the defeat, ensuring Leeds weren't on the receiving end of a humiliating loss come full-time.

3 CB – Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon will also start versus Rooney's side, the Tottenham Hotspur loanee excelling again versus West Brom despite the final outcome.

Amassing 106 touches of the ball at the Hawthorns, Rodon's unerring calmness on the ball was also matched by an ability to roll up his sleeves and show his expertise physically when needed – winning six duels in total, the Leeds number 14 proving to be a fantastic acquisition in the summer.

4 CB – Liam Cooper

Leeds defender Liam Cooper.

Liam Cooper came back into the Leeds side last match owing to Pascal Struijk being ruled out due to injury, the Scottish centre-back reclaiming his captain duties in the process.

The experienced figure of Cooper proved to be a worthwhile addition to the lineup, the imposing number six blocking three West Brom shots in the 1-0 defeat.

5 LB – Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

Sam Byram also returned to the lineup at the Hawthorns alongside Cooper, a forgotten figure to some at Elland Road coming back in to replace Archie Gray.

Byram should be retained for the game versus Birmingham after a satisfactory outing at West Brom, making five clearances in total filling in at left-back.

6 CM – Ethan Ampadu

Ethan Ampadu's spot in the starting eleven shouldn't be under any threat for the game tomorrow against Birmingham, the ex-Chelsea man solid in the away game at West Brom if a little unspectacular.

He wasn't quite at his no-nonsense best – only winning one duel in the game – but Farke is unlikely to drop the holding midfielder who has started every single Championship game this season for the promotion-chasing Whites.

7 CM – Ilia Gruev

Former Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Ampadu's midfield partner in Ilia Gruev will hope he can become a reliable first-teamer under Farke in the weeks to come, Gruev starting ahead of Glen Kamara away at West Brom and stepping up to the mark.

The summer signing from Werder Bremen wasn't shy or passive starting just his second game of the campaign, winning all but one of his duels in the narrow loss.

Moreover, the Bulgarian defensive midfielder was useful in helping his team play out from the back – accurate with three of his four long balls at the Hawthorns.

8 RM – Daniel James

Dan James

The first potential change for the game against the Blues could see Daniel James return to the first team fold ahead of Wilfried Gnonto, the Italian forward blowing hot and cold in the West Midlands.

The diminutive right winger couldn't muster up a single shot on target versus Carlos Corberan's hosts, equally as stunted venturing forward with just one successful dribble managed across a second-rate hour on the Hawthorns turf.

James, in contrast, was lively when introduced into the game for a 30-minute run-out – the £50k per week winger registering three successful crosses despite only being on the pitch briefly.

Farke will want his speedster to be hard to contain against Birmingham to help his team pull off a win, drifting into pockets of space to be a thorn in the Blues side.

Once referred to as "electric" by ex-Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen after a dazzling display in the Championship for Swansea City, James will want to continue his impressive individual campaign against Birmingham if selected.

9 CAM – Georginio Rutter

Leeds forward Georgino Rutter.

Farke could well opt to play Rutter in an attacking midfield spot against a susceptible Birmingham side, allowing Rutter's creativity to come to the forefront – instead of his weak goalscoring ability – by supplying the other forward players with chances to hit the back of the net.

The former Hoffenheim man has nine assists next to his name already this season, meaning he should be perfectly suited to this more creative role in the side over a lacklustre Joel Piroe.

Piroe has been out-of-sorts in the last two away games for Leeds, Farke potentially giving his Dutch attacker a breather for the game on Monday.

10 LM – Crysencio Summerville

There's no chance that Farke will axe Crysencio Summerville however, Leeds' showboating winger is crucial to how the Whites operate going forward.

Even on a collective off-day as seen in the narrow Baggies defeat, Summerville was still lively and alert in attempting to make things happen – creating once big chance at the Hawthorns, alongside successfully completing four dribble attempts up against the sternest defence in the division.
