Liverpool Hold "Concrete" £50k-p/w "Orchestrator" Interest

Liverpool hold a “concrete” admiration for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Is Ruben Neves leaving Wolves?

The Portugal international’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season, meaning that the upcoming market is likely to be Julen Lopetegui’s final opportunity to cash in on his prized asset, and the captain has already put teams on alert after admitting during an interview following his final home outing that he is keen to join a bigger club to achieve his dream of playing in the Champions League.

Of players to regularly feature this season, the Midlands outfit’s £50k-per-week talisman is ranked as the team's best-performing player at Molineux with a WhoScored match rating of 6.98, so it’s no surprise that he feels like he can compete at a higher level, and his impressive performances have grabbed the attention of Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.

Back in April, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the 26-year-old was on FSG’s shortlist but that a move wasn't “imminent”, though Spanish outlet Sport (via TEAMtalk) has since reported that the Reds, alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United, are considering an approach – and as per the latest update, they could yet steal Neves from under their rivals' noses.

Who is signing Neves?

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have a “concrete” interest in Neves ahead of the 2023/24 season. Barcelona are currently in “pole position” to recruit the midfielder amid reports of a swap deal including Ansu Fati, but Wolves are only looking to complete a cash-only deal – which creates a roadblock at Camp Nou.

The Anfield outfit are therefore “lurking in the wings” and ready to hijack the move should an agreement fail to be reached. A “well-placed” Reds source has revealed that the Old Gold skipper is “highly regarded” for his passing range by the recruitment team behind the scenes, with chiefs of the opinion that he would fit “seamlessly” into the starting XI.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves.

Liverpool might not be on the road to qualifying for the Champions League this season, but Neves – dubbed a midfield “orchestrator” by talent scout Jacek Kulig – will know that they are a club with a strong history of silverware, and FSG should certainly think about submitting a bid to bring him to Anfield.

The World Cup participant is extremely strong in the defensive aspects of his game, ranking in the 98th percentile for clearances and recording 78 tackles since the start of the term, which is more than any other of his fellow teammates, as per FBref. Meanwhile, he’s also equally capable of getting involved with the action in the final third.

Wolves’ versatile operator, who has the ability to play in three different positions, has seven goal contributions (six goals and one assist) to his name in the top flight this campaign and has produced 78 shot-creating actions which, once again, is the highest number at Molineux, so he could arguably be forgiven for thinking he has outgrown the team, which only confirmed their Premier League status in recent weeks.

Neves also shares the same agency, Gestifute, as Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Fabinho, so this existing connection to Jorge Mendes could give Liverpool some kind of advantage over their fellow competitors in the race to secure their target’s signature this summer.

Spurs’ £25m Machine Was The Shining Light vs Villa

Amid what has been a season of real frustration for Tottenham Hotspur, the north London outfit were dealt yet another blow after suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, with Ryan Mason's men having been pegged back in their battle for European qualification.

That frustrating loss has ensured that the Lilywhites have now won just one of their last six Premier League games, with the interim appointment of that man Mason having failed to have the desired impact on an underperforming squad.

The 31-year-old will likely have been concerned over the lack of impact from his forward line, in particular, against Unai Emery's men as the likes of Heung-min Son and Richarlison made just 30 touches combined, with only talisman, Harry Kane restoring some credibility by converting late on from the penalty spot.

Even the England skipper – who now boasts a stellar haul of 27 league goals for the season – was not without blame for the defeat to the Villans, however, with the 29-year-old having squandered a gilt-edged chance to level things up just after the break after firing straight at Emi Martinez.

In truth, the "only real positive" to come from the trip to Villa Park – in the words of The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare – was the cameo outing of summer signing Yves Bissouma, with the Mali international having been a shining light on his first appearance since February.

How did Bissouma perform against Villa?

It has undoubtedly been a frustrating debut campaign for the 26-year-old in the capital due to his persistent injury woes, although the former Brighton and Hove Albion man showed flashes of just why the club splashed out around £25m to acquire his services back in June.

After replacing Oliver Skipp around the hour mark, Bissouma went on to make a strong impression in the closing stages having completed 30 of his 31 total passes as a marker of his ability in possession, while winning one of his two total duels to indicate his ball-winning prowess.

Tottenham's Harry Kane and Yves Bissouma

As football.london's Alasdair Gold noted, the £55k-per-week machine 'brought energy to the midfield' following his second-half introduction, having 'looked bright' on a day that many of those around him found life difficult.

That glowing praise was also corroborated by the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick, with the respected insider writing in his post-match player ratings pieces that the 6 foot rock was 'one of Spurs' better players', despite having been out of action over the last few months.

The hope will be that Bissouma can go on to make an even bigger impact over the coming games, before establishing himself as a key figure under whomever the permanent managerial appointment will be for next season.

Fabrizio Romano Issues Double Chelsea Transfer Claim

Chelsea will be going into the summer transfer window with a striker and midfielder at the very top of their wishlist, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What do Chelsea need over the summer?

There is certainly an argument to be made for the Londoners being one of the biggest surprise packages of the 2022/23 campaign.

And it is not positive surprises that they have offered their fans with the Blues currently slumped in the bottom half of the table.

A lack of stability over their managers has been a big issue with Todd Boehly already onto his third manager of the campaign as the search for Graham Potter's permanent replacement goes on.

The money spent by the new Chelsea ownership has been nothing short of obscene over the last two transfer windows.

However, it does not seem they are ready to rein in their spending with a number of additions being eyed up ahead of the summer transfer market.

Indeed, speaking on his Here We Go podcast, the reliable journalist has been speaking about their main two priorities with just four games remaining in their campaign:

(13:30) "The striker will arrive for sure and I think the central midfielder too. So these are the two top priorities for Chelsea, in this moment, on the market then of course there could be more depending on the opportunities but striker and midfielder are the priorities."

Will a striker fix Chelsea?

Reports would suggest a deal to bring Mauricio Pochettino to Stamford Bridge is heading closer and closer to being agreed ahead of the summer.

The arrival of a fresh face in the dugout could potentially help the club over the summer given it is apparent they need to make some changes to their squad.

One of the biggest issues Potter was thought to have at Stamford Bridge was the sheer number of players at his disposal leaving it incredibly difficult for him to nail down his best XI.

Mauricio Pochettino

However, one of their clearest issues is their lack of prowess in front of goal with the Blues having registered the fifth-fewest goals (34) of any club in the league this season.

Across all competitions, Chelsea's top scorer is Kai Havertz who has scored just nine goals this season and after Raheem Sterling (7) the next-highest scorers have just three goals to their name.

There are some reports claiming the Blues are keen to bring in Victor Osimhen on the back of his sensational campaign in Serie A with Napoli.

Considering Chelsea have been able to maintain one of the league's best defensive records, by adding a player of Osimhen's calibre, they could significantly increase their returns in front of goal.

Newcastle Receive Approach For £132k-p/w Trippier Successor

Newcastle United have received an approach regarding the summer availability of Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui, according to reports.

What's the latest on Mazraoui's future?

The Morocco international first arrived at the Allianz Arena in July 2022 on a free transfer from Ajax, but his debut season in Germany hasn’t gone as well as he would have no doubt hoped upon putting pen to paper.

The Bavarians star has been significantly out of favour having made just six starts in the Bundesliga this season, and has so far only recorded one outing under Thomas Tuchel since he was appointed following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann. Despite his contract not expiring for another three years, he could therefore already be considering a move elsewhere, and should that be the case, he won’t be short of any potential suitors in the Premier League.

The Magpies are long-term admirers of the 25-year-old having been initially linked with him two years ago, but bigger clubs were better placed to sign him at the time. Now though, the northeast outfit have been given the perfect opportunity to take a second bite of the cherry and are in a better position to compete with their rivals…

According to 90min, Newcastle, Manchester United, Wolves, Arsenal, West Ham United and Crystal Palace have all been “alerted” to Mazraoui’s availability by his personal representatives. PIF and Eddie Howe are set to be “kept informed” of the right-back’s transfer situation in the weeks and months ahead, but the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have also been “told” that he could be on the market at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich defenderNoussair Mazraoui.

Where would Mazraoui fit in at Newcastle?

Newcastle will eventually need to recruit for life after Kieran Trippier who isn’t getting any younger (32), and as a full-back who “cannot be defended” when flying forward, according to ESPN analyst Arnold Bruggink, Mazraoui would be the ideal long-term successor.

The Leiderdorp native is strong in defence having won 71 per cent of his tackles this season but is also a threat down the flank having posted 48 goal contributions (26 assists and 22 goals) throughout his career to date.

The £132k-per-week ace, who has the flexibility to operate in a remarkable eight different positions across the field, additionally knows what it takes to be successful having got his hands on seven senior titles since bursting onto the scene, so would enhance the winning mentality of the squad already at St. James’ Park.

Tottenham: Spurs Dealt "Shattering" Harry Kane Blow

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has apparently 'told friends' he will not be signing a new deal at the north London club, according to a report.

What's the latest on Harry Kane leaving Spurs?

Amid the current chaos engulfing Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy, the pressing issue of Kane's expiring contract comes as another worry for the Premier League top four hopefuls.

The 29-year-old's current terms expire in 2024, giving Tottenham just two transfer windows to either cash-in on the forward, agree a new deal or let him leave for free next year. In the background, there are many other concerns, most notably the absence of a permanent manager after Antonio Conte departed the club by mutual consent last week.

The search for his successor is well and truly on, with Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Zinedine Zidane billed as targets for Levy. April 19 is also set to be a crucial date on the Spurs calendar, as it is the day we found out the result of director Fabio Paratici's appeal to the FIGC over a worldwide ban from football.

In terms of Kane, though, his future is set to be another major talking point this summer – coming nearly two years after the attacker tried to leave for league champions Man City. The Blues, having signed red-hot striker Erling Haaland last summer, are now out of the running.

Instead, their cross-town rivals Man United have apparently identified Kane as a top summer target and it is rumoured that they're ready to make a bid for him. Now, according to a report by Football Insider, Erik ten Hag's side may have just been boosted in their pursuit.

As per their information, it is believed Kane has now 'told friends' he will not be signing a new deal at Spurs – a development which they describe as a 'shattering blow'. Those with knowledge of the situation have apparently indicated the Spurs star's reluctance over penning fresh terms amid the consistent problems at Tottenham right now.

Who could replace Kane at Spurs?

In the event Spurs are forced to either sell Kane or contemplate his replacement next year, we believe one man stands out as a possible successor – Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

A deal for the Nigeria international, who has been loosely linked with Tottenham in recent months, would be a hard one to pull off given his eye-watering €100m (£89m) price tag.

However, if Levy is to replace a figure of Kane's ilk, the Spurs chief must throw the kitchen sink and Osimhen is proven in front of goal. Indeed, the 24-year-old has bagged an incredible 21 goals and four assists in 22 Serie A starts – spearheading Napoli's title charge.

He is exactly the kind of player needed to replace Kane, thought it would be a tall, tall order.

Aston Villa Could Sign £120k-p/w Player This Summer

Aston Villa are thought to be interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

What’s the latest transfer news on Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been on the books at Anfield since 2017, but his days on Merseyside appear to be numbered. The 29-year-old has made 145 appearances for the Reds, however, he has been limited to just 469 minutes of football under Jurgen Klopp this season.

The midfielder has started just four times in the Premier League and is out of contract at the end of the campaign, with Fabrizio Romano stating that he is expected to leave Liverpool as a free agent over the coming months. It looks as if the Midlands could be a potential destination for the player, who has a successful record against Aston Villa, winning 11 of his 13 games against the club.

The Daily Mail provided an update regarding Oxlade-Chamberlain in the last 48 hours, saying that he has interest from Italy. However, there are also clubs in England who are keen on securing his services, one of which is Villa. Brighton and Newcastle are also thought to be interested in his signature, with the former of the two previously looking at a move in January.

Would Oxlade-Chamberlain be a good signing for Villa?

Oxlade-Chamberlain, lauded as 'superb' as a number eight by journalist Raj Chohan, has plenty of experience at the highest level for club and country and can play in a number of different midfield and attacking roles ranging from a central midfielder to a winger.

On that basis, you could say that he could be a shrewd squad addition under Unai Emery, however, in recent years, he has struggled for game time at Anfield. Since the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Oxlade-Chamberlain has played just 38 times in the Premier League, with his last real run of games for Liverpool coming four years ago.

He hasn’t had any luck with injuries either, missing 169 during his club career with Liverpool and Arsenal due to a number of different issues. The Englishman has missed 34 games in recent years with knee and hamstring problems, so there is no guarantee he would be available to Emery all year round.

Therefore, you could say that a move for the player over the coming months could be a gamble by NSWE and Villa despite no transfer fee required, especially as Oxlade-Chamberlain is on a £120,000-a-week salary on Merseyside, the same as star man Emiliano Martinez.

Sunderland must unleash Pierre Ekwah

Sunderland will be looking to extend their run of five matches without defeat in the Championship as they travel to face Rotherham United tonight.

The Black Cats have not lost in the division since 14 January (against Swansea) and are heading into the clash against the Millers off the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City.

Jack Clarke put the hosts in front at the Stadium of Light with a stunning strike from distance before Trai Hume conceded a penalty in stoppage time, which Nahki Wells converted.

With fixtures coming thick and fast at the moment, Tony Mowbray may look to make some changes to his starting XI to keep players fresh and maintain a high level of competition for places.

Will Pierre Ekwah start against Rotherham?

One player who could benefit from alterations to the starting line-up is central midfielder Pierre Ekwah, who should finally be unleashed from the start by Mowbray tonight.

The former West Ham United gem, who was signed in January, has made three appearances as a substitute in the Championship, and this clash could be his first opportunity at Sunderland to showcase his talent for more than just a few minutes.

He impressed in a recent cameo against Queens Park Rangers, completing 100% of his attempted dribbles and ground duels whilst also creating one chance in just nine minutes of action, as per Sofascore.

Mowbray recently hailed the gem’s “silky-smooth left foot” and has been trying to get the best out of the midfielder’s physical attributes.

The Sunderland coach said of Ekwah: “His left foot is really smooth, and yet I have been trying to encourage him to bring his physicality because he is a big lad – he’s not a small, skinny, frail, kid. He’s got huge physical attributes that he should bring to the party.”

These comments suggest that the youngster has all the qualities that he needs to be an excellent player for Sunderland, and handing him an opportunity to play against Rotherham could allow him to put it all together to produce a complete performance.

In the EFL Trophy for West Ham’s U21s earlier this season, Ekwah averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 as he created two chances and made two tackles and interceptions per match across three appearances, which shows that the midfielder has the ability to make a big impact at both ends of the pitch.

Therefore, Mowbray must rest Dan Neil or Edouard Michut in order to hand the 21-year-old gem his first big opportunity to prove his worth in a Black Cats shirt.

Hope claims Saint-Maximin in talks over new Newcastle contract

Craig Hope has hinted on his YouTube channel that Allan Saint-Maximin is in talks with Newcastle United over a new contract.

The Lowdown: Newcastle working behind the scenes

Newcastle tasted defeat for only the second time in the Premier League last night and both of those losses have been inflicted on the Magpies by Liverpool, who were also the only side to beat them at St James’ Park in the league during 2022.

It shows that the Magpies do indeed have a sort of mental or physical block when it comes to facing Jurgen Klopp’s side, but one positive from a damning evening on Tyneside was the performance of Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman was picked out as the Player of the Match by Jamie Carragher last night which may hint at a shift in his form heading into the Carabao Cup final next week, or he could be playing for something more than just a starting berth.

The Latest: Saint-Maximin heading for a new deal

Hope questioned post-match last night why Saint-Maximin was only starting to turn up his performance amid talk of a new deal going on behind the scenes.

He said: (4:25) “The opening 10 minutes I thought they were brilliant and one of those positives was Saint-Maximin. Why is it he only really turns it on when he’s in talks over a new contract on the eve of a cup final but I thought he was brilliant, the best we’ve seen in a long time from him during the first 10 minutes.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: PIF making moves off the pitch

It is quite an interesting turn of events to see Saint-Maximin seemingly in talks over a new deal as he has been pretty much a squad player under Eddie Howe post-injury this season and has a current deal that ties him down until 2026.

Therefore, it would appear that there should be no urgency to be thrashing out new terms for Saint-Maximin, especially when reports have suggested over the last few months that the club were willing to move him on.

However, performances like the one last night – which saw Dominic Scurr labelling him a ‘bright spark’ reminds everyone of the talent that he does indeed possess and if he can carry the Magpies to glory next week and continues to step up his level of performance, PIF may see no other option but to hand him a new contract.
