Dillon Pennington dismantles Derbyshire before Kashif Ali's debut half-century

Worcestershire 141 for 5 (Kashif 52) lead Derbyshire 130 (Dal 55, Pennington 4-36) by 11 runsDillon Pennington’s burst with the new ball and Kashif Ali’s half-century on his first-class debut earned Worcestershire the initiative on the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Derbyshire at New Road.Pennington reduced Derbyshire to 14 for 5 with four wickets in the space of 18 balls after they had been put into bat and, despite a half-century from Anuj Dal, they were bowled out for 130 in 51.1 overs. He clearly enjoys bowling against Derbyshire after registering career-best figures of 5 for 32 and a match return of 9 for 76 in the corresponding game last season.Worcestershire also had initial problems when they launched their reply but Kashif seized his chance following a mountain of runs for the second XI and they closed on 141 for 5 when bad light and then rain halted play at 5.35pm.Related

Kashif was the first product of the South Asian Cricket Academy to sign a professional contract with a first-class county earlier this season. Three hundreds and four fifties in his last seven knocks for the seconds was a testament to his potential and he reached a 72-ball half-century.But he became one of several players during the day who surrendered their wicket to careless shots although there was enough movement on a greenish pitch to keep the seamers interested.Worcestershire handed a debut to Pakistan pace bowler, Mohammad Hasnain. Club captain Brett D’Oliveira was ruled out with a back injury and vice-captain, Jake Libby, led the side while Derbyshire were unchanged from the team which drew with Nottinghamshire.Libby won an important toss on a green tinged wicket and his bowlers soon justified his decision to put Derbyshire into bat. Joe Leach struck with the last ball of the opening over as Harry Came was plumb lbw to a ball of full length. But it was Pennington who broke the back of the Derbyshire top order with a superb opening burst of 4-2-3-4. Brooke Guest was bowled offering no shot to a ball angled in and then Wayne Madsen, who began the day needing 32 runs to reach 1,000 for the season, did not reduce that tally as he edged as delivery which nipped away to Josh Baker at fourth slip.Luis Reece and Hilton Cartwright were both caught behind by Gareth Roderick, after pushing forward to Pennington. Derbyshire captain, Leus du Plooy, opted for an aggressive response and dominated the scoring during a sixth-wicket stand of 39 with Dal.But Ed Barnard, who is to join Warwickshire on a three-year deal from next season, made further inroads with wickets in successive overs.Du Plooy, on 38, played with an angled bat at a delivery and gave Baker another catch, this time at third slip, and Mattie McKiernan offered no shot but inside edged onto the stumps. Derbyshire were then 53 for 7 and in danger of being bowled out before lunch but resistance came from Dal and Ben AitchisonThey added 56 in 22 overs before Barnard came back into the attack and had Aitchison nibbling at a delivery which was safely pouched by Roderick. Dal mixed solid defence with some classy shots and two cuts for four off spinner Josh Baker enabled him to complete a 104-ball halfpcentury with eight boundaries.Hasnain had bowled two threatening spells without any luck but cleaned up the tail in classic fast bowler’s fashion as he yorked both Sam Conners and Dal.Worcestershire also ran into trouble against the new ball and found themselves 23 for 3 in the fifth over. Conners knocked out Libby’s off stump with a ball which nipped back and Ed Pollock, having struck Aitchison for six over midwicket, tried to upper cut his next ball and was caught behind.Taylor Cornall flicked at a leg-side delivery from Conners and also found the gloves of Guest. But the momentum of the game switched into Worcestershire’s favour as Jack Haynes and Kashif counter-attacked during a stand of 97 in 18.4 overs.Haynes reeled off a succession off delightful cover drives and flicks off his legs why Kashif produced a series of back foot punches which pierced the field. The pair took Worcestershire into the lead only to then both surrender their wickets to loose shots.

Former Australia selector Laurie Sawle dies aged 96

Former WA opener was chairman of selectors between 1984 and 1995 and played a part in shaping Australia’s golden generation

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jul-2022Former Australian chairman of selectors and Western Australia opening batter Laurie Sawle has died at the age of 96.Sawle played a significant role in shaping Australia’s great teams of the 1990s and 2000s, having been a national selector for 13 years between 1982 and 1995, acting as chairman for 11 of those years. He played a part in the recruitment of Bob Simpson as national coach in 1986 and then was a key figure in the selections of Australia’s golden generation, including Steve and Mark Waugh, Mark Taylor, Ian Healy, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne among many others. He was also an influential figure in the development of Australia’s Under-19 programmes and the Australian cricket academy in the late 1980s and 1990s, where a number of those players honed their craft.Related

The Colonel reflects

Sawle was nicknamed “Colonel”. He was born in East Fremantle in 1925 and served in the 7th Australian Infantry Battalion during World War II. He enlisted in January 1944 and fought in Bougainville as a teenager. He made his first-class debut for Western Australia at the age of 29 and played 35 matches, scoring 1701 runs at 28.83, including one century. He opened alongside one-Test batter John Rutherford while both were working as teachers at Kent Street High School.Sawle retired from playing in 1961 and applied to be a Western Australia selector in 1962, a role that he held until 1980. It was during this time that Western Australia won six Sheffield Shield titles, having won just one prior to that. Western Australia also won four 50-over titles in that period.Sawle was part of a selection panel chaired by Allan Edwards that fostered the careers of Dennis Lillee, Rod Marsh, Kim Hughes, Terry Alderman and John Inverarity, who formed the backbone of some of those sides, with Lillee and Marsh becoming two all-time greats of Australian cricket.During Sawle’s time as Australia’s chairman of selectors, he served as the tour manager on the 1989 Ashes tour of England. He was credited with handpicking and rearranging the top six that secured a 4-0 series victory.Jack Clarke presents Laurie Sawle with a medal•Mark Dadswell/Getty ImagesSawle retired from the selection panel in 1995 but remained a devoted cricket watcher at the WACA until late in life. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1992 for his services to cricket administration. He was awarded the ICC Volunteer Recognition medal in 2009. Sawle is also a member of WA cricket’s gallery of greats and WA cricket’s best male player each year is awarded the Laurie Sawle medal. WA cricket CEO Christina Matthews paid tribute to Sawle after his passing on Tuesday night.”Laurie Sawle was enormous to the fabric of cricket in Western Australia for decades,” Matthews said.”He was an incredibly talented and devoted administrator who was prepared to back himself and others in, and his passion for cricket never waned. Even years after his retirement, we’d regularly see him at the WACA Ground cheering WA on.”The fact our highest individual men’s award is named after him speaks volumes about the type of character he was, and the legacy he left.”We were incredibly lucky to have him, and remain grateful for everything he achieved.”The WA Cricket community sends its thoughts to his three children Maryanne, Carmel and Mark and close friends in this difficult time.”

Slot must unleash "unstoppable" Liverpool star who can terrorise Walker

Liverpool are riding on the crest of a wave right now, and they face Manchester City at precisely the right time.

While the Anfield side are currently on a 15-game unbeaten run across all competitions, City have failed to win any of their previous six games, going through their most difficult period under Pep Guardiola.

The Reds hold an eight point lead at the top of the table and should Arne Slot’s side go on to defeat City this afternoon, it could put another dent in Guardiola’s title ambitions.

Manchester City’s defensive frailties

Since their win over Southampton on October 26, the club have conceded 17 goals in just six games, scoring only seven times during that time period.

Guardiola’s defenders certainly struggled, most notably Kyle Walker, who was helpless against Tottenham Hotspur last week as they ran riot, scoring four without reply to inflict one of the heaviest defeats the former Barcelona manager has endured.

Walker may have won four of his five total duels contested, yet the right-back made just one tackle and one clearance in the defeat as he was run ragged by Heung-min Son for Spurs, who shone on the left wing.

If Liverpool aim to secure all three points, then targeting the 34-year-old could be one way of piling on more misery for City this weekend, that’s for sure.

Kyle Walker

Who will Slot unleash on the left flank, however?

The Liverpool star who can terrorise Walker

There is no denying how impressive Luis Diaz has been this term, registering 11 goal contributions – nine goals and two assists – in just 18 matches under Slot.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz celebrates

Against Real Madrid in midweek, Diaz wasn’t quite at his sparkling best, missing two big chances, winning just two of his nine ground duels and losing possession ten times during the clash.

Cody Gakpo entered the game with 20 minutes left, taking over from Darwin Núñez, and he ended up getting on the scoresheet along with succeeding with 100% of his dribbles and making one key pass.

Although he was deployed through the middle against the La Liga side, perhaps Slot could unleash the Dutchman on the left flank so he can terrorise Walker this afternoon.

In the Premier League last season, Gakpo ranked in the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.69) and in the top 28% for progressive carries per 90 (2.35), clearly indicating that he could be a major threat out wide for the Reds.

Cody Gakpo scores for Liverpool

During the 2022 World Cup, Statman Dave hailed his performance against Qatar as “unstoppable” and if he can replicate this sort of form, Walker is in for a rough 90 minutes, that’s for sure.

The Anfield side have a wonderful chance to stretch their advantage at the top of the table with a victory against City. If they do, then Slot’s men could be difficult to catch in the Premier League this season.

Reset or regret for England as West Indies look to extend home hegemony

Post-Anderson and Broad era gets underway but reboot already under scrutiny

Andrew Miller07-Mar-2022Big Picture”We’re not going to panic,” Paul Collingwood said last week, midway through England’s one and only warm-up game ahead of a Test series that – fairly or otherwise – is destined to attract some snap judgements in the coming days. As preambles go for England’s much-vaunted “red-ball reset”, it wasn’t the most glowing of status reports. For England – in case you drifted off during the Ashes and haven’t entirely tuned back in since – have committed to doing things differently on this trip. Or should that be, the same but differently? For it would appear, for this first Test in Antigua, that instead of leading the line with 1,177 Test-wickets worth of mega-experience in James Anderson and Stuart Broad, England are about to launch their new era with a cut-throat new-ball pairing of … [checks notes] Chris Woakes and Craig Overton? That is “quite surprising”, as Kemar Roach put it this week. That potential attack is not quite as it was meant to be, of course. Ollie Robinson – England’s best newcomer of the 2021-22 season – would have been inked in for this contest, had he not succumbed to another iteration of the fitness issues that marred an otherwise combative Ashes campaign. But that in itself was a weird message to put across at the start of the squad’s new dawn: when you want to prove you mean business, it seems odd to bin the veterans whose professional standards have not dipped in more than a decade, in favour of a rookie who hasn’t yet convinced he’s got the stamina to match his undoubted talents with the ball.At least there’s Mark Wood – or at least, there should be, but Wood himself has been under the weather, having missed the first innings in Coolidge while undergoing blood tests for a non-Covid-related illness. He seemed back to his 0-100 best on the final day, but the sapping demands of a Test match may require some honest assessment from the management if they hope for him to replicate his Ashes heroics, let alone touch the 96mph/154kph speeds that he served up during England’s most recent Test in the Caribbean, at St Lucia in 2019.Either way, it’s all a touch sub-optimal for a side that has lost 10 of its last 14 Tests since February last year. And that’s before we even consider England’s bafflingly hopeless record in the Caribbean, a region where they have won one Test series in 10 in the past 50 years, in spite of the fact that West Indies’ golden era finally passed with the retirements of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh two decades ago.”For me, England is our big series,” Roach added. “I’m always looking to put my best performance out against the Poms.” And few were bigger than his opening gambit on that last tour three years ago, when he routed England in a session, bowling them out for 77 with figures of 5 for 17. With Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph on hand for high-octane back-up, not to mention the cloud-snagging discipline of Jason Holder – whose most recent intervention against England was the small matter of four wickets in four balls to win January’s T20I series – there may yet be some uncomfortable echoes of Babylon’s Fire for Joe Root’s men to negotiate in the coming days.Related

Talking of Root, so much rests – as ever – on his shoulders. His stellar form in 2021 gave way to exhaustion and disillusionment as England’s dismal Ashes went down the tubes at the turn of the year, but his promotion to No. 3 signals a redoubled desire to lead from the front. Rather than hope against expectation that his openers can lay a platform, he’s committed to staunching the bleeding at the earliest opportunity – an admirable attitude, if perhaps an acknowledgement that if he can’t lift the team, then no one can.Root can at least anticipate a similar level of commitment from his vice-captain, the somewhat battered talisman Ben Stokes, even if Stokes’ struggles in the Ashes were proof that it’s not quite as simple as flicking a switch and finding your best form when you’ve endured quite such high-profile setbacks as he did last year.In theory, however, it ought to be England’s batting that gives their team the edge in this series – which is a curious conclusion to reach after they failed to reach 300 in any of their ten Ashes innings. There’s also Jonny Bairstow at No. 6, after all – the man who produced quite possibly the best innings on either side in the Ashes, a thrillingly combative century at Sydney that briefly kept a rampant Australia attack at arm’s length.Opener John Campbell is expected to return for West Indies•Getty ImagesPound for pound the experience of that trio ought to outmatch their opponents, on whom a huge amount rests on the proven obduracy of the captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, at the top of the order. There have been some promising signs elsewhere in their line-up, not least the impressive early outings of Nkrumah Bonner at No. 3, who made his maiden Test hundred when West Indies took on Sri Lanka in Antigua last year, and Kyle Mayers, whose debut double-century to beat Bangladesh in Chattogram in February 2021 was one of the performances of the decade.Overall, however, West Indies are suffering from a malaise not dissimilar to that which has dogged England in the recent past. The preponderance of white-ball cricket at regional level has produced some outstanding ball-strikers in recent years, and some proud success on the global stage. But it has left too many batters too ill-equipped for the rigours of the red-ball game – a debate that was enthusiastically taken up by Mali Richards, son of Viv, during his commentary duties in England’s warm-up game.As such, there’s no knowing what to expect in the coming days, except that West Indies will be gunning for the contest in a matter befitting the regional pride that their home record against England has long instilled. Whether or not you think that the dropping of Anderson and Broad is proof of England’s complacency or a necessary step in the “resetting” of those flatlined red-ball fortunes, you can rest assured how their absences will be framed in the Windies’ team-talks, and how there will be an extra spring in a few steps as they seek once more to rally round.Form guide(Last five matches; most recent first)
West Indies LLLWL
England LDLLLIn the spotlightAlex Lees is set to become the 22nd man to open the batting for England since the retirement of Andrew Strauss a decade ago, following the dropping of both men who fronted up at the start of the Ashes, Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed. Like Burns before him, Lees gets his chance after sterling service on the county circuit – although his two County Championship wins with Yorkshire in 2014 and 2015 are already ancient history, given that this call-up comes after a dip in form and a move north to Durham. He made a decent impression in England’s warm-up in Coolidge with an unruffled first-innings half-century, but the bar for the role is currently extremely low. Of those who have debuted as specialist openers since Strauss, no one averages more than Joe Denly (31.33), the man who debuted in the corresponding Test in the Caribbean three years ago.Alex Lees is set for a Test debut•Getty ImagesThere’s nothing quite like a West Indies fast bowler to set the pulses racing, and in Jayden Seales, they have a truly special prospect in the process of breaking through. After cutting his teeth at the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, Seales was picked to take on South Africa the following year without ever having played a regional first-class fixture. It mattered not, as he dismissed Keegan Petersen in his first over with a display of startling pace, then backed that up against Pakistan two Tests later, with a second-innings five-for and eight in the match, en route a thrilling one-wicket victory in Jamaica. At the age of 20, there’s the danger of expecting too much too soon. But with 16 wickets at 21.31 in four Tests to date, he certainly delivers the raw goods.Team newsWest Indies have recalled opener John Campbell after a year out of the side, and are set to pick left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul in a home Test for the first time since 2015. Shai Hope and Roston Chase were dropped following defeat in Sri Lanka, meaning a reshaped middle order – Shamarh Brooks offers another batting option, though the temptation may be to target England’s batting fragility with a five-man attack. Shannon Gabriel was not fit to be picked in the squad but has been training with West Indies in Antigua and could feature later in the series.West Indies (possible) 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 John Campbell, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Kyle Mayers, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Joshua da Silva (wk), 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Veerasammy Permaul, 11 Jayden SealesEngland have named their 12-man squad already, with Robinson’s absence notable following a back spasm in the warm-up. With Jack Leach a probable starter, Woakes already talked up as a new-ball shoo-in, and Wood sure to play if he is fully fit after undergoing blood tests last week, the final place looks like being a tussle between Overton and the uncapped Saqib Mahmood. Mahmood would be the bolder pick, but seeing as he was not in the warm-up frame until Wood’s illness, Overton is the likelier man to get his chance, following a brace of appearances against India last summer.England (probable) 1 Alex Lees, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Joe Root (capt), 4 Dan Lawrence, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Craig Overton, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Jack LeachPitch and conditionsA straw-coloured, intermittently cracked surface awaits on Tuesday, although it’s anyone’s guess at this stage how it will play. West Indies and Sri Lanka played out two high-scoring draws in the ground’s most recent contests last year, although it didn’t seem that way when Sri Lanka crumbled to 169 all out in their first innings. The weather is set to be glorious, with intermittent Caribbean storms coming and going in a matter of minutes.Stats and trivia England have never won a Test in Antigua in nine-and-a-bit attempts spanning 31 years. They were beaten in three of their seven visits to the old Recreation Ground between 1981 and 2009, and also lost by ten wickets on their third and most recent visit to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in 2019. That tally also includes the so-called “sandpit Test” of 2009, which was called off after ten balls due to an unfit outfield. Kemar Roach, with 231 Test wickets, needs another five to go pass the tally of the great Sir Garfield Sobers. Only six West Indians have taken more than Sobers – including five all-time great fast bowlers in Walsh, Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Michael Holding. England last played a Test against West Indies without either James Anderson and Stuart Broad at Edgbaston in 2012 – when both were rested for a dead-rubber in, ironically enough, England’s first attempt at succession planning. The match is best remembered for Tino Best’s 95 from No. 11. Almost three-and-a-half years since the prospect first tickled every cricket fan’s inner nerd, it seems that we are finally going to witness Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Ben Foakes in the same Test team. What japes.Quotes “Obviously they’re missing two experienced bowlers [in Anderson and Broad], but at the end of the day cricket is played on the park so we’re not taking it for granted.”
Kraigg Brathwaite is focused West Indies beating on the opposition players who have been picked to tour“We know that historically it’s not an easy place for England to come and play – but that’s a great opportunity for the group. To come away from here winning would be a huge achievement.”

Amorim must unleash Man Utd sensation who was "insulted" by Ten Hag

This week represents a new era for Manchester United with new boss Ruben Amorim finally getting his feet under the table and joining the Red Devils.

The 39-year-old will aim to implant his tactics into his new playing squad over the international break ahead of his game in charge against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on the 24th November.

Amorim takes over from Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was given his marching orders following a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United a couple of weeks ago.

It spelt the end of his 28-month stint in charge at Old Trafford, with his poor start to the new Premier League season ultimately sealing his fate despite financial backing from the hierarchy during the off-season.

It’s likely that Amorim will completely strip back the current tactics, undoubtedly sticking with his 3-4-3 system that saw Sporting CP claim the Liga Portugal title last season, along with a Champions League victory over Manchester City just last week.

However, one player will still remain an integral part of the first team, handing Amorim all the tools to be a success in the years ahead.

Why Bruno will be crucial under Amorim for Man Utd

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been the shining light in a disappointing United side for months on end in recent times, often being the man to single-handedly dig the side out of trouble in desperate moments.

He joined the Red Devils in a £68m deal back in January 2020, missing out on playing under Amorim at Sporting by just a couple of months after his appointment in March of the same year.

The 30-year-old has been worth every penny since his big-money transfer, consistently producing the goods in attacking areas throughout his near five years in Manchester.

Since his arrival, Fernandes, who’s now United’s club captain, has registered 83 goals and 73 assists in his 250 appearances – an average of a goal contribution in every 1.6 games he appears in.

Undoubtedly, he will remain a key player under his compatriot, holding all the keys to any potential success in the years ahead for the Red Devils – possibly featuring in numerous different roles.

He could feature as a box-to-box number eight, or even as a wide attacking midfielder behind the striker, but it’s likely he will star in the former, having the ability to dictate the play more in such a role.

The recent form of one other player could force him into that role, with Amorim desperately needing to utilise one player who was often starved of game time under the previous management of Ten Hag.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The man who could be better than Bruno under Amorim

Winger Amad Diallo arrived in a shock £36m deal from Italian side Atalanta back in January 2021 after featuring just five times as a professional for the Serie A outfit.

However, the United hierarchy obviously saw huge amounts of talent in the Ivorian to bring him to Manchester – often having to bide his time under Ten Hag.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a stellar loan spell at Sunderland in 2022/23, scoring 14 times in 42 appearances – but it was only enough for a bit part role in the first-team last season.

Amad only made nine league appearances in 2023/24 – totalling just 388 minutes – with Ten Hag often opting for big-money flop Antony rather than handing minutes to the talented youngster. It was a decision that MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst claimed should have left the Ivorian “insulted” with his treatment.

However, this season, he’s already showcased he has all the tools to be a real threat under Amorim, registering three goals and two assists – surpassing his tally from any of his previous campaigns at the club.

Within the last week alone, he’s registered two goals and an assist, with his double firing the Red Devils to a 2-0 victory over PAOK in the Europa League.

Given United’s lack of success in the final third in recent months, Diallo’s form has certainly pushed him further up the pecking order and demonstrated that he could prevent any further big-money investment by being a useful asset to Amorim.

At 22, he’s now at the perfect age to demonstrate why the hierarchy splashed such a hefty fee on him at such a tender age, with his early form in 2024/25 making him an extremely useful asset to the new boss.

Aston Villa’s "outstanding" loan ace is worth more than Rogers after exit

Aston Villa have made some superb signings under Unai Emery since the Spaniard took charge of the club back in October 2022. He has overseen four transfer windows as Villans boss so far, spending a few hundred million to strengthen the squad.

That has certainly paid off, with the Midlands club now competing for the top four and in the Champions League.

The most expensive player the former Arsenal boss has signed during his tenure at Villa Park was Amadou Onana. The Belgian midfielder cost £50m from Premier League rivals Everton. The Villans have also signed Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire and Pau Torres from Villarreal.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

Arguably Emery’s best signing as Villa manager, however, is Morgan Rogers.

Rogers’ stats for Villa

Since making the move to Villa Park in January 2024, versatile attacker Rogers has been a revelation for the club. He left Championship side Middlesbrough to join Villa, in a deal worth an initial £8m, but with the potential to rise to £16m with add-ons.

It has been an exceptional start to life in the Midlands for the Manchester City academy graduate. Rogers has quickly become a key player under Emery and is now a regular starter in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

So far for the Villans, he has played 30 times and already has six goals and four assists to his name. This term in the Premier League, the 22-year-old has been in impressive form, with five goal involvements so far.

There have certainly been plenty of high-profile people who have taken notice of the electric attacker. One of those is former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher. Earlier in the season, he described the Villa number 27 as a “machine”, explaining that he looks “unstoppable” when he dribbles.

Rogers is hitting new heights each week and continues to excel in that famous Claret and Blue shirt. His value has risen to £18.2m as per Transfermarkt, exceeding the price he cost the Midlands club.

With that being said, there is a former Villans loanee who is also having an impressive season and is now worth even more than their star man.

The former Villa star worth more than Rogers

One of the biggest cult heroes at Villa Park in recent years was Tammy Abraham. He was a pivotal figure in their promotion success back in 2018/19 when he spent a year on loan at the club from Chelsea.

tammy-abraham-aston-villa-transfer

That season was simply phenomenal for the Cobham graduate. He scored 25 goals in 37 Championship games, and a further strike in the play-offs as the Villans won promotion by beating Derby County at Wembley.

Four of those finishes came in a hectic 5-5 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

Since his loan at Villa Park expired, the striker has gone on to play for some big European clubs. Of course, he returned to Chelsea where he played for a few seasons, before moving to Italy. Abraham joined Roma from his boyhood club, and impressed despite missing a season with a bad injury.

For the duration of the 2024/25 campaign, the 27-year-old is on loan at Milan. He has scored once and has two assists to his name in seven Serie A appearances, although has played just 355 minutes. That is the equivalent of 3.9 full 90 minute games. With three goal involvements in just over three full games, his numbers are stacking up well.

With that in mind, the striker, who was described as an “outstanding” player by football statistician Statman Dave, is now valued higher than Rogers.

According to Transfermarkt, Abraham is worth £20.7m, although that has dropped given he missed a season with injury.

Williamson walking a tightrope over persistent elbow issues

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has found it challenging to refrain himself from over-hitting at the nets and instead keep himself fresh for the matches. Williamson’s elbow injury flared up during the warm-ups in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup and the team management has managed him carefully since then.Williamson had sat out New Zealand’s first warm-up, against Netherlands, with a niggly hamstring. He then returned to action against Australia, top-scoring for his side with 37 off 30 balls, but aggravated his elbow. The elbow complaint has been a long-standing one for Williamson, forcing him to miss the ODI series at home against Bangladesh, the start of the first leg of IPL 2021 in India in April, the Edgbaston Test against England and the inaugural Hundred. The elbow was more recently put to test, again, when New Zealand played three Super-12 fixtures in five days across three venues in UAE.”Yeah that has been a bit of a challenge for me personally – the balance between the loading of the elbow and things like that,” Williamson said on the eve of the semi-finals against England in Abu Dhabi.”So, trying to stay as fresh as possible for the game. So, it’s been a bit of a delicate balance to get my head around and I certainly look forward to the day it’s gone (laughs) and I don’t have to worry too much about it.”But, as it stands, it’s a topic of discussion and [I’m] just trying to work closely with the physio to make sure I’m as fresh as possible for the game. It has had an impact on loading, which therefore means training has been a lot less to be fair.”Head coach Gary Stead also said that Williamson’s stints at the nets have been limited although he prefers to hit a lot of balls at training.”Kane’s good at the moment,” Stead said. “He hasn’t probably trained as much as he would have liked. But that’s just making sure that the time when he’s batting, hopefully, that’s in the middle for us and winning games of cricket that he’s not overdoing the elbow and probably training for him is the chance of making it worse. We’ve managed that well and I think that’s the mental challenge for Kane – to work that out as well.”Three days after the T20 World Cup final in Dubai, New Zealand are set to kick off their India tour with a three-match T20I series. New Zealand will then begin their World Test Championship defence in the two-match Test series in Kanpur and Mumbai. The same T20I squad that was picked for the World Cup will also tour India. This means Williamson’s niggly elbow is set for a heavier workout in the subcontinent.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Chilwell has been cast out of the Chelsea squad by Enzo Maresca since the Italian signed with the Blues last summer. The left-back was told by the west London side that he was not a part of his plans for the season but failed to secure a move away from Stamford Bridge and has only played once this season – a 45-minute-stint in the Carabao Cup third-round clash against fourth-tier side Barrow.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chilwell has been looking for an exit this winter and has been linked with a number of clubs. However, Crystal Palace have now struck a deal with Chelsea and signed the England international on a six-month loan until the end of the current season.

  • WHAT CHILWELL SAID

He told the club's media: "I'm very excited to be here. Crystal Palace are a club that's going in a great direction. You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team's playing, and it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here."
