Robertson starts & “special” star out in predicted Liverpool XI v Burnley

Liverpool fell to defeat in the capital last Sunday, comprehensively beaten at the Emirates Stadium against title rivals Arsenal, and while Jurgen Klopp still has a hold on top spot in the Premier League, Manchester City will return to first-place should they win their game in hand.

On Saturday, Liverpool return to Anfield and will host Burnley in a match that will be viewed as a must-win, the Clarets languishing in 19th place and seven points adrift from the dotted line.

Jurgen Klopp

Of course, Reds supporters know only too well the damage Burnley can inflict on Merseyside, winning 1-0 in 2021 to end the Reds' 68-match unbeaten run on home turf in the top flight.

Klopp will be confident that his team will prevail tomorrow, though he could make four alterations from the side that was dismantled against the Gunners.

1 GK – Alisson

Alisson Becker.

Alisson endured a nightmare performance against Arsenal, leagues away from his usual imperious standard and at fault for two of the opposition's goals.

Still, the Brazilian is one of the best – if not the best – goalkeepers in the world, with the second-best save percentage in the Premier League this season at 75%.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Another one to have been far from their best last time out, Trent Alexander-Arnold was perhaps rushed in his return from a knee injury after Conor Bradley took personal leave.

Lauded for having a "playmaking masterclass" in his locker with world-class constancy by The Times' Henry Winter, the England international has posted two goals and nine assists in all competitions this season and will be crucial to Liverpool's fluidity against Burnley.

3 CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Ibrahima Konate has been in stunning form this season but picked up two yellow cards last week and thus is suspended for the visit of Vincent Kompany's squad. But fear not Liverpool fans.

Jarell Quansah, aged 21, will seamlessly slot into the line-up, having emerged as one of the club's standout prospects this season.

Commanding and composed, the 6 foot 5 titan looks right at home under Klopp's wing.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk did not enjoy his finest hour last time out but this should not detract from the phenomenal performances he has put in since donning the captain's armband last summer.

As per Sofascore, the 32-year-old has completed 90% of his passes across 21 Premier League fixtures this term, averaging 1.3 tackles, 5.0 ball recoveries and 4.3 clearances per game, also succeeding with 77% of his duels.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson.

Andy Robertson picked up a shoulder injury on international duty with Scotland back in October and while he returned to fitness last month, he has been kept out of the starting fold by the brilliant Joe Gomez.

The forthcoming contest presents the perfect opportunity to reintegrate the ace and he should be named among the starters, hoping to pick up his fine form in the early days of the 2023/24 campaign.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister signed for Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m last July as Klopp made sweeping changes to his midfield, and he has come into his own as the deep-lying string-puller.

Technically immense and boasting a salivating range of passing, Mac Allister also averages 2.9 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.

7 CM – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott.

With only three league starts to his name this term, Harvey Elliott will be eager to take his chance to impress in the place of Dominik Szoboszlai, who is sidelined with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

The dynamic midfielder is among the most creative and graceful in English football and will be crucial in weaving the thirds together as the hosts look to go on a rampage.

8 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones.

Alexander-Arnold remains Liverpool's homegrown golden boy while the emergences of Quansah and Bradley have got fans chattering with fervour, but Curtis Jones, aged 22, has been excellent this year and might just be Anfield's unsung hero.

Jones has scored five goals and supplied three assists this year but it is his press-resistance and technical quality that makes him so valuable in the engine room, industriously metronomic, keeping Liverpool purring with a kind of clockwork cohesion.

9 RW – Diogo Jota

Liverpool star Diogo Jota.

The laterality of Diogo Jota is something to behold. Simply, he doesn't seem to have a positional preference. Right, left, central – who cares? Certainly not him.

The man lives for goals, and ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, Jota will be the talisman needed as Mohamed Salah recuperates from a muscular injury.

Cody Gakpo will have to relinquish his position on the right but the "special" forward – as he has been called by assistant coach Pep Lijnders – has been out of sorts recently and Jota is the man for the job.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz had struggled to click into gear for much of the season before the turn of the year fuelled him with a new wave of energy and optimism.

The 27-year-old has three goals and two assists since the start of January and will stretch Burnley like a piece of taffy, his fleet-footed style sure to wreak torment as Liverpool strive to return to winning ways.

James Vince sparkles with 190 as Hampshire continue winning run

James Vince produced the highest one-day score in England for over a decade with an incredible 190 as Hampshire remained unbeaten in the Royal London Cup with victory over Gloucestershire. No player had scored as many since Ravi Bopara for Essex in 2008, but Vince crashed the highest individual total for a Hampshire player in List A cricket – beating his own previous best of 178. The innings was even more special for the situation, having arrived at the crease in the second over before Hampshire were reduced to 65 for 4 and struggling.Vince put on a record 186-run stand for the fifth wicket with Liam Dawson and guided his side to 331 before Hampshire bowled Gloucestershire out for 246 to complete a 71-run victory by the DLS method.Hampshire were put in on a good-quality wicket, with variable conditions throughout the match, and initially struggled, with Chris Liddle the chief destroyer with the ball.David Payne was the first to strike as Tom Alsop attempted an extravagant drive in the second over and was bowled through the gate. Fast bowler Liddle then entered to find Aiden Markram edging behind before forcing Sam Northeast and Rilee Rossouw to chop onto their own stumps.Enter Dawson, to accompany, and save the innings with Vince. Both carefully negotiated the niggling line and length of the Gloucestershire attack before fluently moving to fifties, both from 63 balls.Together they added 186 runs to steam Hampshire into a strong position, before Dawson fell for 73 as he picked out Benny Howell at long-on to hand Liddle figures of 4 for 66.Vince has now passed fifty in three of his four one-day innings this summer – and given the England selectors a push ahead of the World Cup this summer if any of the currently selected players suffers an injury. This was must-watch cricket as he moved through the gears and struck five huge sixes – the pick of which saw him dance down the wicket and deposit a checked cover driver over the off-side. He reached 100 in 111 balls, 150 in 138 as he rattled his total from 100 to 190 in 43 deliveries.Vince’s assault saw his side score 114 runs in the last 10 overs, although James Fuller’s handy 21 off 13, which included the biggest maximum of the day over squad leg, helped the cause.Vince eventually succumbed for 190 before scooping to Tom Smith at point and was given a rapturous reception from the Ageas Bowl members. With DLS altering the target to 318 off 47 overs, Kyle Abbott stunted Gloucestershire’s reply by dismissing George Hankins in the third over, caught at point by Northeast, and then Gareth Roderick, caught and bowled. Captain Chris Dent was then run out by Northeast’s direct hit, as the visitors slumped to 38 for 3.Mason Crane, who posted 3 for 64, had James Bracey caught by a stunning outfield catch by Dawson, before Howell was lbw to the leg-spinner.Jack Taylor was bowled by Crane, before Dawson had Graeme van Buuren stumped and Smith castled to complete figures of 2 for 32. Brad Wheal bowled Ryan Higgins, before Hampshire were held up by a 50-run stand for the last wicket between Payne and Liddle, eventually completing their victory with 19 balls to spare.

Spurs could sign their new Dembele who’s "one of the best in Europe"

The first half of the season was all about the rise and subsequent fall of Ange Postecoglou's swashbuckling Tottenham team.

Spurs had looked like title contenders in the early stages of the term, unbeaten in their first nine league matches. However, four consecutive games without a win later saw them fall out of the top four.

That said, as 2023 drew to a close, they were still only a point behind bitter rivals Arsenal who currently sit in fourth spot.

Injuries have ravaged Postecoglou's side but fortunately, Johan Lange and Co now have a transfer window to sink their teeth into.

Tottenham's January transfer window plans

One area the club are looking to strengthen is the centre of defence with Genoa centre-back Radu Dragusin having already reportedly agreed personal terms with the club.

Lange also has plans to bolster Spurs' midfield, with Borussia Monchengladbach powerhouse Manu Kone lined up for a potential move to the Premier League.

That's according to Rudy Galetti who suggested in the dying stages of 2023 that Tottenham were one of the sides interested in making a deal happen. They will, however, face the arduous challenge of fighting away PSG.

A deal won't come cheap with Transfermarkt currently rating Kone at a valuation of £31m. It's expected he may well cost a fair bit more than that though.

How Manu Kone compares to Mousa Dembele

Try as they might, Spurs have struggled to replicate the sincere impact that Mousa Dembele had on the spine of their team.

The likes of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have been signed in a bid to offer similar attributes but truth be told, neither are cut from the same cloth.

arthur-vermeeren-mousa-dembele-tottenham-opinion

You only need to look at how some in the game regard the Belgian to understand his impact at White Hart Lane.

Indeed, Jack Wilshere once stated: "You couldn’t get the ball off him, his dribbling was unreal.” There was finer praise from Kyle Walker who said: "Dembele was probably the best player I’ve ever seen play football." As for Eric Dier, he aptly suggested he was a "monster".

Arguably one of the best press-resistant midfielders to grace English football, Dembele was perhaps ahead of his time. Though, in Kone, Postecoglou could have a like-minded player at his disposal.

Detailing the Frenchman's playstyle, scout Antonio Mango commented: "Strong stance when receiving the ball, fantastic ball-carrier & extremely difficult to overturn. One of the best in Europe. Koné very rarely loses possession & always looks to play forward, that’s key."

kouadio-kone-liverpool-transfer-news

That certainly sounds a lot like Dembele, but let's compare some of the finer details a bit more closely.

While Dembele tallied up a rather ridiculous number of progressive passes per game during the 2017/18 campaign, the two players are largely very similar. Their key pass rate and number of shot-creating actions are nearly identical while they both love to attempt take-ons and carry the ball into the final third.

Postecoglou certainly has some fine ball progressers in his side at the moment, chiefly the likes of James Maddison and Heung-min Son but there is still something lacking from the midfield. Kone could bring that to Spurs, just as Dembele did all those years ago.

'A spell in Chelmsford prison didn't stop me drinking' – Tony Adams on his battle with alcoholism

Almost 30 years have elapsed since Tony Adams, the former England and Arsenal captain, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment in Chelmsford Prison, after crashing his car into a wall while driving at four times the legal limit. And last week, Adams was back in the city once again, albeit half a mile down the road at Essex’s County Ground, passing on the harsh lessons he learnt in 12 years as an alcoholic, as part of a county-wide education initiative in conjunction with the Professional Cricketers’ Association.”For 12 years I was drinking, and for 11 and a half I didn’t want to stop,” Adams told ESPNcricinfo. “The denial was really strong, and the consequences too, but even a spell in Chelmsford prison down the road didn’t stop me drinking. I came out of prison and drunk and drove again. The denial was still in me and I wasn’t ready.”It is now coming up for 23 years since Adams last touched alcohol, his “drug of choice” for the majority of a storied career which featured more than 500 appearances for Arsenal, as well as 66 England caps, including 15 as captain. And it is now 20 years since he set up his charity, the Sporting Chance Clinic, to provide treatment, counselling and support for sportsmen and women suffering from similar addictions – be it drink, drugs or gambling – as well as anxiety and depression.Endorsed initially by Sir Alex Ferguson – who invited Adams to address his Manchester United squad before the programme was rolled out to all Premier League clubs – Sporting Chance has been working with the Rugby Football League since 2011, and from this season onwards, all 18 county cricket clubs.”Since 2011, we’ve helped about 400 players with our network of counsellors, a treatment centre in Hampshire, a 24-hour helpline and seminars,” said Adams. “They say that 10 percent of the population, or one player at every club, is going to slip on the addiction front and they know where to come.”Adams was addressing the Essex squad on the eve of their pre-season tour of the UAE – the sort of trip that has for years been a byword among sporting teams for excessive behaviour. And while insisting that the differences between football and cricket are as marked as the similarities, Adams recognised that the nature of cricket tours – with their long weeks away from home and lots of down time between engagements – could lend itself to the sort of slippery slope that undermined his own career.”Injuries and holidays were definitely the opportunity for this addict to get absolutely smashed, and the situation around tours and camps, when there’s lots of down time, they are similar,” said Adams. “You don’t have to go to the bottom, there was a spell in my career when football was enough for me, but then it creeps round and you use, and there’s consequences, and you use again, and there are more consequences.”English cricket has recently drawn a line under a difficult 12 months, centred around the Ben Stokes incident in Bristol, but also encompassing a number of drink-related controversies on the 2017-18 Ashes tour. And while Adams wouldn’t be drawn on the lessons that Stokes might have learnt from his brush with career oblivion last year, when he was found not guilty of affray after appearing at Bristol Crown Court, he cited his own career as proof of how easy it can be to ignore the warning signs of self-destructive behaviour.”For the last six to eight months of my drinking career, I didn’t actually want a drink but I was still getting drunk,” he said. “It crossed the line and once it crosses the line there’s no getting back.”And in my day, there was no help. No-one was coming to my football club or cricket club, it just wasn’t done. You shoved it in a box and buried it, or they’d drag you down the pub, and I didn’t need much dragging.”I was unhappy with how I felt,” he added. “I had low self-esteem and self-worth, but a huge ego because, as footballers, you’d be getting massaged as a great player. But off the pitch I felt worthless, a scared little boy.”On three occasions in his career, Adams even took the field drunk – once, against Sheffield United, emerging with the Man-of-the-Match award.”I mistimed the drinking,” he said. “I remember looking out of the window thinking ‘how did that happen?’ I was so confused. There was no point sobering up because I’d have had a complete headache, so I had a couple in the morning.””I said to George [Graham, Arsenal’s manager], ‘I’m not feeling very well’, and he said, ‘thanks for trying’. We’re very good at concealing it and masking the pain and trouble we’re in, and when I got a pat on the back, it was like ‘oh, I got away with that one’.”Adams’ destructive tendencies had a knock-on effect on those around him – and he believes that had he not finally been ready to sober up in time for the arrival of Arsene Wenger in 1996, the new Arsenal coach would have struggled to make his mark on the club.”I was six weeks clean and sober, and when the pupil is ready, the teacher appears,” said Adams. “And if Wenger had come into the club two months before that, I don’t think he would have lasted. I got the last manager sacked, because when the captain’s spending more time in the pub than on the training pitch, I think the coach is let down. I definitely let down Bruce Rioch and I’ve apologised for that.”In the course of an hour-long seminar, delivered by Adams and Ian Thomas, the PCA’s director of development and welfare, the Essex squad were given guidance in how to spot the warning signs, both personally and among team-mates, and how to go about seeking the sort of help that Adams himself recognised he so desperately needed.”We talk about the gift of desperation,” he said, “when the pain gets too much. I didn’t know how to kill myself, but I didn’t want to live. I was confused and bewildered, and in terror, and I never want to go back there.”Self-knowledge didn’t get me sober. It got me to my bottom and as soon as you hit the bottom and surrender, then therapy gets you well and gets you stronger.”It’s about giving someone their life back.”

Nicholls could be New Zealand's back-up keeper at World Cup

Henry Nicholls could be considered as New Zealand’s back-up wicketkeeping option for the World Cup while there remains the possibility that three spinners might be taken to England as they search for the ideal balance of their 15-man squad.New Zealand’s preparations for the tournament continue with a five-match series against India with coach Gary Stead saying there were still parts of the “puzzle” to complete although was happy with the bulk of the squad.Tom Latham returns to face India having been rested against Sri Lanka and will be the No. 1 wicketkeeper at the World Cup, but it remains uncertain whether there will be a specialist back-up for him in the squad. Tim Seifert played the three matches against Sri Lanka but it could be that New Zealand try to get maximum value from their World Cup squad by backing Nicholls to stand in if needed.”It’s a possibility,” Stead said. “Henry has had a little bit of keeping in the past and again that’s a selection question when we sit down to finalise the squad of 15 and work out the balance we need. We’ll work out whether we go that way or have a genuine person who keeps all the time as balance.”We got some information we wanted [about Seifert] which was really good, we certainly have no question marks around his ability with the bat and to change a game quickly. We’ve given him some things to go away and work on with the gloves in terms of being a little bit tidier generally, but he’s certainly on the upward ranks in how he’s going with his keeping.”If Nichollas was the reserve wicketkeeper it could open up a spot in the final World Cup squad for a third spinner or another allrounder. Stead is delighted with the depth he has in both areas and there is the prospect of two legspinners, Todd Astle and Ish Sodhi, joining the fit-again Mitchell Santner in New Zealand’s bowling options. Astle’s knee injury has kept him out of the initial squad to face India but he is expected to be included later in the series.ALSO READ: Mitchell Santner, Tom Latham back in New Zealand ODI squad“The spin-bowling stocks is a position we are lucky with in New Zealand,” Stead said. “In Astle, Sodhi and Santner we have three guys who have performed well. Personally I’ve always been a fan of legspinners because I think they can still spin the ball both ways and provide a real point of difference. There is a possibility that [three spinners] could still happen.”Stead said a cautious approach was being taken with Santner after his comeback from the knee injury which kept him out for nine months. “It’s great that we have Mitch back, he’s a world-class performer and we are really excited to have him back in the fold. We’ve been monitoring how he’s been going, think it’s unlikely he’ll play in every match [against India] and we just want to be a bit cautious around his comeback after the injury he’s had.”Allrounder Jimmy Neesham is not expected to be sidelined for long by the hamstring injury picked up in the final ODI against Sri Lanka. Corey Anderson has also resumed bowling but is running out of time to push his claim for a World Cup spot and would probably have to play in the Bangladesh series to be in with a serious chance. What appears certain is that he has to offer overs to be considered.”It helps his case definitely,” Stead said. “Guys who can provide three to five overs in your and help balance it up is a definite advantage and if he’s not doing that then he’s up against the batsman and needs to prove he is better than them.”The allrounder’s positions is being hugely sought after, we probably have four people who are genuinely contenders for two or three spots.”

Torrential rain scuppers opening day for India

The best India can hope for now is a three-day match, after the weather that brought havoc to Sydney led to a washout

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Nov-2018

Heavy rains swept through Sydney on the opening day of India’s warm-up match•Getty Images

Torrential rain and thunderstorms brought havoc to Sydney on Wednesday and washed out the opening day of India’s warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI, as their preparations for the Test series took a hit.The heaviest rain seen in the city in three years swept in during the early hours of the morning, causing transport chaos on the roads and at the airport, making it unlikely from well before the scheduled start that the players would get on at the SCG.The skies briefly cleared during the afternoon and the umpires went as far as confirming that there would be a toss at 3.30pm local time, with an aim to start at 4pm. But shortly after that announcement, the rain returned. However, the fact that they did hope to start for a short while was an indication of how well the SCG outfield had coped with the huge volume of rain – more than month’s worth fell in little over 90 minutes in the morning – and offered encouragement that if the weather clears for the second day, play will not be impacted. The forecast was better for Thursday, although there was still a 50% chance of showers, before the weather settles down on Friday and Saturday. It could, therefore, mean that India will have little more than two days of time in the middle to prepare for the opening Test in Adelaide. It had already been confirmed that this would not be a first-class fixture, in order to enable India to use as many of their squad as they wanted, so they may now have to get creative to make the most of the remaining time in the match. Wednesday’s play had been added at the request of the BCCI, after the match was originally scheduled to be a three-day encounter, with the board hoping to find time for a second warm-up match.India, as with most touring sides these days, have had limited build-up to their recent series in South Africa and England, and lost the first two matches of both series, before securing victories in the third games, at Johannesburg and Trent Bridge respectively.India have a number of selection issues to resolve before the first Test – their opening combination, whether they play a sixth specialist batsman, and the make-up of their pace attack.

Alastair Cook is 'flat-lining' says concerned Graham Gooch

The man Cook overtook to become England’s leading run-scorer keeps seeing him make the same mistakes

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Aug-2018

Alastair Cook watches as his outside edge is about to be pouched•Getty Images

Alastair Cook’s long-time mentor, Graham Gooch, is worried the England opener “is flat-lining” as the debate grows about whether he is fighting to save his career.Cook fell for 17 in England’s disappointing first innings at the Ageas Bowl to continue a lean summer where he has only passed fifty once. It is part of a longer theme in Cook’s recent career where the occasional peak – double centuries against West Indies and Australia – have come amid extended runs of low scores.”My concern would be watching him that I don’t see any improvements in his game,” Gooch told the Today show on . “I think he’s flat-lining a little bit. When you’re a batsman, you need to improve yourself, you need to look for new things to do to drive you forward.”In the last five years of his Test career, Gooch averaged 51.55 compared to his overall figure of 42.58 making 12 of his 20 hundreds in that period including the career-best 333 against India at Lord’s.Such has been the longevity of Cook’s career, which has included multiple occasions where he has hauled himself out of lean runs, it has often been suggested that he could emulate the Gooch’s late-career surge. He overtook Gooch as England’s leading Test run-scorer in 2015.”I don’t know how he’s practicing and I don’t know what he’s doing away from the game, but I am concerned when I see him play,” Gooch said. “I think he makes similar mistakes but even at 33 or 34, you can improve yourself.”Cook is currently averaging 19.06 in 2018 having had a poor series in New Zealand and then finding problems against India’s impressive attack. His lean form has compounded England’s opening problems which, since Andrew Strauss’ retirement in 2012, have focused on trying to find a reliable partner for Cook without success, a cycle which looks set to continue unless Keaton Jennings hauls himself out of his current struggles. Before the fourth Test against India, Cook received fulsome support from the current captain Joe Root when it came to the remainder of this season. England’s overseas assignments in 2018-19 include Test series against Sri Lanka and West Indies
