Spurs fans shower Son Heung-Min with praise

Tottenham Hotspur fans have hailed Son Heung-Min after the South Korea international opened up on his disappointment at the club’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.

Spurs dropped points again versus the Blades, meaning they have not won in the Premier League since September when they defeated Southampton 2-1.

The result leaves Spurs in 12th in the Premier League, with just 14 points. They are six points clear of the relegation zone and 12 behind both Leicester City and Chelsea.

Son scored Spurs’ goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to slide the ball under the goalkeeper.

And he gave an interview to the club’s Twitter account following the final whistle, expressing his disappointment at the result and appearing genuinely frustrated at another missed opportunity for the club.

And fans took to social media to sing the South Korea international’s praises.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Birmingham on course for collision after Pep Clotet talks club aims

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Keeping feet on the ground and heads out of the clouds.

That was the message that Pep Clotet presumably wanted to get across after getting back to winning ways.

Speaking after the victory over Blackburn Rovers, Clotet was asked about whether or not it was possible that the Blues could reach the top six in the Championship:

“I don’t know if we are what is required to be in the play-offs but what I know is if something can be done better, we recognise, we grow it and improve it. We go game by game.”

So it looks as if he is relatively cautious when it comes to their chances, which is somewhat admirable.

You don’t want to set expectations too high only to end up disappointed. Plus, given that Birmingham doesn’t exactly have the resources to compete with the big boys in the division, at least he’s being realistic and not getting delusions of grandeur.

However, it does come into direct opposition with some of his players, and that’s where things might get tricky.

As we have discussed previously on FFC, both Ivan Sunjic and Fran Villalba both have ambitions to play in the Premier League and that Birmingham need to get there at some stage or risk losing out on two of their bigger-name players, preferably sooner rather than later.

Whilst Birmingham may not have had the highest of expectations from outsiders at the beginning of the campaign, they are exceeding them for the time being.

However, there has to come a time where eventually he is going to have to meet the ambitions of the players and to a lesser extent the board.

It just speaks that although things might be going well off the pitch, there is still a little bit of disharmony off of it.

If not everyone is on the same page then it will just sow the seeds for problems down the road.

Eventually there is going to have to come to a point where Clotet admits that he wants the club to take a step forward. After all, some of his players are showing huge signs of ambition. He must match them.

West Brom extend Hal Robson-Kanu’s contract, but was it the right call?

West Brom are loving life right now under Slaven Bilic.

Following his appointment in the summer, the Baggies currently sit atop the Championship table after 11 matches with just one blemish against their record.

That sole defeat came up at Elland Road as Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United somehow got the better of them despite being under the cosh for much of the game. It was so intense that Albion managed to rack up 70% possession for the last half an hour.

The west Midlanders responded perfectly days later, defeating Cardiff City, so the squad will head back into the domestic season full of confidence.

Not a lot of the Croatian’s decisions so far during his reign can be questioned. All of his summer signings have played some part in their success, witnessed most by Nathan Ferguson, who was promoted to the first-team squad during pre-season.

According to Express & Star, he was set to be rewarded with a new five-year contract amidst interest from the Premier League.

The club have since announced that Hal Robson-Kanu has signed a new contract, albeit until 2021, rather than the initial five years reported. With that in mind, is Bilic finally about to be doubted?

Here’s what Football FanCast’s writers think about the 30-year-old extending his stay at the Hawthorns…

Matt Dawson

“If you told me that Hal Robson-Kanu would earn a new deal after getting sent off towards the back end of last season when West Brom only had Rodriguez upfront after Dwight Gayle’s own suspension, I’d have laughed in your face. However, time moves on, and given the struggles in front of goal this term from Albion’s strikers, perhaps handing him a new deal is actually a sensible decision.

“They lack a senior centre-forward who can actually find the back of the net – Charlie Austin only has one and Kenneth Zohore has two – so that tells you some extra assistance is needed. Robson-Kanu only notched four times in 2018/19, but you sense that they require all the help and squad depth they can get.

“The Welshman has played in the Premier League before so wouldn’t be the worst player to have around the place if they do go up. In this instance, a short-term deal makes sense. After all, they have players like Jamie Soule rising through the ranks, and they’ve also just signed Cheikh Diaby – players who might be ready once his new deal ends.

“This may look like a confusing piece of news on the face of it, but at the end of the day, it’ll be a wise decision from Luke Dowling in the immediate future.”

Billy Meyers

“I just don’t see the point in this. Hal Robson-Kanu should never have been signed in the first place, and appeared to be somewhat of a panic signing after he enjoyed an impressive EURO 2016 tournament with Wales – he scored two goals in five games.

“With a terrible record of nine goals in 99 appearances (how has he even played that many games?) tying the 30-year-old down to a new contract wouldn’t be a smart idea. There is no resale value in the forward, nor is he an asset that the Baggies must protect – if any club did want him, West Brom should snap their hand off and send Robson-Kanu packing.

“Slaven Bilic is overseeing a good, youthful spell at the Hawthorns right now with the likes of Nathan Ferguson and Romaine Sawyers catching the eye, and signing a washed-up player to fresh terms would somewhat stain the exuberance in the squad right now. “

James Beavis “West Bromwich Albion are absolutely right to offer Robson-Kanu a new short-term contract – after all, they have nothing to lose by giving the Wales international a 12-month extension.“He may have polarised the fan-base at times, but it isn’t often that you have an experienced left-footer in your ranks that is able to cover a range of attacking positions.“The nous and know-how he provides at this level and for his country is invaluable, and he is someone that could be hugely influential even when he isn’t on the pitch as the Baggies look to make their Premier League return this season.“In addition, the west Midlands side aren’t exactly blessed with a plethora of options in the attacking position, so there is no harm in keeping Robson-Kanu on for the time being.

“Forget about his record of nine goals in 99 appearances for Albion for one minute – the 30-year-old offers so much more than that.”

Lewis Blain

“To me, this move is somewhat perplexing. Robson-Kanu has done very little to warrant a new contract, and it is a decision that Bilic may well live to regret if they do achieve promotion this season.

“There’s no way that the 30-year-old is of Premier League quality if he can only score nine goals in 99 appearances in the blue and white stripes, especially when he’s played the bulk of his career at Championship level. Being the wrong side of 30 doesn’t help either.

“Bilic may well sign a striker in January, given links to Dwight Gayle, so the Welshman’s role could diminish further when the season enters 2020.

“He is better off dipping into their promising youth setup and giving one of them a shot if required. Jamie Soule has signed a three-year deal. You’d hope he makes the breakthrough sooner rather than later.”

Liverpool fans criticise Andrew Robertson’s display in Napoli loss

[ad_pod ]

Ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League tie with Napoli, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp revealed that Andrew Robertson was a doubt for the contest after sustaining a slight knock.

The 25-year-old ended up playing the full 90 minutes of the European clash, though, which Liverpool lost 2-0 courtesy of goals from Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente.

Robertson conceded the penalty that saw Napoli take the lead, whilst he also picked up a yellow card in the early stages of the second period.

ESPN only gave the Scotland international a 5/10 for his performance in Naples, and it would be fair to say that a number of the Liverpool fans were also disappointed with what they saw from the left-back on Tuesday night.

Robertson was outstanding for the Reds during the 2018/19 campaign – contributing 13 assists from left-back.

The Liverpool supporters were not pleased with his outing in Italy, though, and many took to social media to reveal their disappointment:

Man City fell to Norwich defeat due to Pep Guardiola’s frustrating complacency

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Despite coming up against a wounded Norwich side, Manchester City suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Snapshot

Having won the league last season, City had made an impressive start to the current campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side headed into Saturday afternoon’s clash with the Canaries having amassed a total of 10 points from a possible 12.

The beginning of the Champions League group stages this week may have given the City boss something extra to think about, and it undoubtedly played a part in the decision to drop star man Kevin De Bruyne to the bench.

In the end, it back-fired spectacularly on the reigning champions, with the Belgian’s impressive second half cameo unable to prevent the Citizens from falling to a defeat.

Off the bench

Speaking after the game, Guardiola admitted he left De Bruyne on the bench with a view to the fixtures coming up. That in itself speaks of a reasoning steeped in complacency. Surely the biggest game is always the next one? Could the Belgium international not have started the match against Norwich, given City a two or three-goal lead, and then be subbed off?

Instead, Guardiola brought De Bruyne on in the 56th minute when the Etihad side were already 3-1 down. The 28-year-old’s contribution after he came on underlines how much of a gaffe it was to leave him out.

The Belgian made three key passes, a total only bettered by Raheem Sterling, and put a game-high 13 crosses into the box. Sadly for City, the midfield maestro was simply given too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

After a campaign in which things were so neck-and-neck between the top two last season, it truly is baffling to see Guardiola take such a huge risk in the Premier League. Already, City find themselves five points behind table-toppers Liverpool.

The club’s Champions League group looks relatively straight-forward with no heavy hitters, and the Carabao Cup is surely at the bottom of the pile when it comes to setting priorities.

So for the City boss to make such a huge gamble is all the more perplexing, and it shows that despite his total mastery of the league over the last two seasons, he still hasn’t learned Premier League lesson 101 – anybody can beat anybody.

West Ham fans love Lukasz Fabianski fitness update

[ad_pod ]

Club insider ExWHUemployee has claimed that Lukasz Fabianski will be fit for West Ham United’s Premier League clash with Manchester City this weekend.

On Tuesday afternoon, Football Insider reported that the 34-year-old was a huge doubt for the match with City as he battles to overcome a groin problem.

However, according to ExWHUemployee, the Poland international will be fit to take on the champions at the London Stadium on Saturday.

It is some start to the new season for the Hammers as they prepare to welcome Pep Guardiola’s side, who will be looking to begin their campaign with a strong performance.

Fabianski would have been a huge miss to Manuel Pellegrini’s side when considering that he played in each of the club’s 38 Premier League matches last term.

The shot-stopper is reportedly fit, though, and it will not come as no surprise to learn that the news has gone down extremely well with the West Ham fans:

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson shares Instagram snap with his teammates in Boston

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool are still on their 2019 summer pre-season tour and if their latest social media activity is anything to go by, the squad is having a great time abroad.

Their second game took them to Boston where they faced their La Liga counterparts, Sevilla. That game, unfortunately, did not really end that well for Liverpool but it’s the experience and the game time that counts, especially for the younger players.

Still, the senior crop of the team have certainly been enjoying themselves as much as they can.

Needless to say, the images were really dashing and stylish as the four Reds posed to look cool in front of the camera.

The photo-shoot took place at Fenway Park where they faced Sevilla, but they will now travel to New York to continue their tour.

Hegazi would go against Aston Villa’s philosophy if he signs

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to journalist Phil McNulty on Twitter, Aston Villa are having a look at Ahmed Hegazi this summer.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa pulled off one of their biggest deals of the summer yet this week by confirming they’d signed Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth.

He’ll add to a defensive line that has already been bolstered by the additions of both Kortney Hause and Matt Targett already.

However, before that news was released, it was revealed that they were also considering West Brom’s Hegazi.

McNulty confirmed on Twitter that they’d been having a look at the 56-cap international when also watching Trezeguet in action for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Wouldn’t fit their philosophy

Villa’s signings this summer have all been below the age of 26. Mings has been their eldest signing whilst Targett, Hause and Wesley are all aged 23 and below.

It’s clear that the Villans are targeting young players to develop and this was one of the main messages that Christian Purslow laid down in May.

Speaking to the BBC he said: “On the recruitment side in particular, things have not been handled as I think they should be in the way our fans expect, which is for us to be a young exciting team and a team that over time establishes itself back in the Premier League.â€

Therefore, signing Hegazi, who is now 28 and doesn’t have much room for development, would go against his word.

Although the experience of the centre-back could prove useful, it would seem a particularly questionable signing after going out of their way to release 31-year-old Tommy Elphick.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Villa made it a priority to get rid of players who were ageing at the end of the season so to bring in someone who could soon surpass their best would fail to make much sense, especially with James Chester, now 30, still on their books.

After all, this is a player who was relegated from the Premier League only two years ago with West Brom.

As a result, Villa would be better off chasing a younger central defender if they have desires of further adding to their backline.
