Meaker express delivers for Surrey

Surrey fought back thanks to Stuart Meaker’s five wickets on day three as Somerset closed with a second-innings lead of 278

ScorecardStuart Meaker claimed five wickets to take his tally to 21 in three Championship games•PA PhotosThe Test cricket was on the other side of the Thames. But for really tough cricket, in terms of a terrific, see-sawing battle between bat and ball, one could not wish for much better than that on offer at The Oval.Graham Thorpe, England’s lead batting coach and a Surrey legend to boot, was among those watching as an absorbing contest changed direction several times before bad light ended the action almost an hour early. The loss of nearly 13 overs this evening could prove costly so far as obtaining a positive result is concerned but at least the forecast for tomorrow is good.Somerset, with a lead of 278 and three wickets in hand, find themselves in the better position but all outcomes remain possible. As for the quality of the cricket, that will struggle to get any better than we witnessed for long periods today while Stuart Meaker and Jon Lewis were bowling in tandem for the hosts against a batting department held together for three hours by the run-ravenous and yet ultimately unsated Nick Compton.Thorpe did not see as much of Tom Maynard as he might have wished, Surrey’s No. 6 adding only 26 runs to his overnight 63 before he was prised out. But one of several young batsmen around the country now attracting serious attention from on high had done just about enough to ensure the hosts were not made to follow-on for a second consecutive match. As for Compton, Thorpe must add more words of praise, surely, to the many already written this season, if he is filing a report to HQ. True, the Somerset man made ‘only’ 50 – small beer for him in a campaign that has brought 869 first-class run so far – but his technique stood up to a long and searching examination until he was finally dismissed in artificially enhanced but still tricky light.Having scored nearly 7,000 Test runs, Thorpe is also more than capable of making constructive comments with regard to what makes an international-class fast bowler. And it would be surprising indeed if he were not hugely impressed with Meaker, who ought now to be added to the admittedly long list of those pacemen pushing for an opportunity in five-day cricket. Now 23, Meaker played a couple of ODIs for England over the winter. But he continues to improve by leaps and bounds and his performance today, while taking five for 42 from 16 overs, was top-drawer. At 6ft 1in, he is not especially tall by current fast-bowling standards. But he is especially quick (a 90mph merchant, without doubt) and here he demonstrated not only great pace but also excellent control. So few deliveries were wasted, particularly during the session between lunch and tea, that Compton – a batsman in the form of his life, remember – scored one run in 10 overs as Meaker and the ever-reliable Lewis joined forces. The wickets, when they came, were eye-catching, too. Extra bounce did for Alex Barrow, James Hildreth snicked a particularly rapid ball and Peter Trego managed to get only part way through an ambitious pull shot, to name just three of the victims. Compton, to his great credit, survived everything hurled at him by Meaker – and survived most of it with calm assurance. He failed to see out the day, though, with an attempted pull against Chris Jordan going sadly wrong. That wasn’t the last bit of damage inflicted by Jordan before the evening’s second and final stoppage for bad light. The allrounder hit Vernon Philander on his bowling hand with a short ball, leaving the South Africa Test star in some pain. Philander called for the physio but was able to carry on after some TLC.

Anjum Chopra named India women's captain

Anjum Chopra has been appointed captain of the India women’s team after being out of international cricket for nearly two years. She will lead the team on their tour of the West Indies in February and March, taking over from Jhulan Goswami, who has been captain since 2008. Chopra, a left-hand top-order batsman, last captained India in February 2003, and has been in and out of the side since 2007.”I’m humbled by the faith shown in me,” Chopra said. “But it comes with a lot of responsibility. Leading the side anywhere is a challenge.”Chopra’s recall comes after India finished bottom of the table in both the ODIs and Twenty20 internationals in the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular series in England last summer. They will play five Twenty20 games, with the first on February 18, and three ODIs in the West Indies and Chopra said the focus would be on preparing for the Women’s World Twenty20, in September 2012 in Sri Lanka, and the Women’s ODI World Cup, which will be played in India in 2013.”The first target is the West Indies tour. Then we all know there are World Cups both home and away coming up. We’re moving towards that. This tour provides us with the perfect chance to go out there and work on our shortcomings ahead of the T20.”The make-up of the team has changed since Chopra was last captain – the current India coach, Anju Jain, was once her opening partner – but she said it would not feel strange returning to the role. “The only difference would be that the woman sitting next to me [Jain] was once my fellow opener but now she dons a different role. Back then Jhulan and Mithali [Raj] just about got into the team, but now things have changed.”Chopra has supplemented her cricket career with television appearances – she was a pundit on the IPL’s official pre and post-match shows in 2011. She said, however, that she never stopped focussing on playing. “I’ve never been away from cricket. I’ve never forgotten the fact that I’m doing commentary because I’m a cricketer. I never went away from playing the sport. Since I’ve been doing television for almost 10 years, people think I’ve retired. ‘You’re still playing?’ they ask. I don’t know why that happens. And I can’t be worried about what people think.”When West Indies toured India in January 2011, both the ODI and Twenty20 series went down to the last game, with India winning the ODIs 3-2 and the Twenty20s 2-1. Chopra said she anticipated another hard battle. “It’s definitely going to be a good series. Last time, when they were here, the games were pretty close. West Indies have improved a lot in the last year or so. There will be good competition.”

O Osmar ainda não definiu o time. Vamos ter uma reunião para definirmos isso.

Característica do time

Títulos no segundo semestre?

A pressão sempre vai existir. Tenho certeza que será um grande jogo

Classy Badrinath stars in easy win

S Badrinath walked into a tricky situation, took charge of the chase without playing a single ugly shot, and finessed Chennai Super Kings to No. 2 in the IPL table with an easy win, though the game ended in the final over

Who said there is no room for a purist in the IPL? S Badrinath walked into a tricky situation, took ownership of the chase of 142 without playing a single ugly shot, and finessed Chennai Super Kings to No. 2 in the IPL table. His effort came after Chennai’s seamers made exemplary use of the extra bounce on the DY Patil strip to restrict Pune Warriors to an under-par score, despite a well-paced 62 from Yuvraj Singh.Badrinath’s virtuoso effort made the total seem woefully inadequate though Chennai dawdled listlessly until he came in. Badrinath isn’t your typical IPL hero. His upright stance, clean feet movement, classical backlift and high-elbow follow-through are all made for Test cricket. Yet, he has managed to find a niche for himself in Chennai’s muscular top order. Today he unfurled an IPL innings of rare beauty: there were no cross-batted slogs, no cheeky lap-scoops to deliveries landed outside off, and not once was he caught napping on the front foot to a short ball.Chennai are not fond of chasing, and today it was evident why. M Vijay and Michael Hussey began too cautiously and the result was 14 dot-balls in the first four overs. Hussey then heaved Murali Kartik to midwicket where Manish Pandey took a tumbling catch. Badrinath earned a promotion ahead of the out-of-form Suresh Raina, and the swap helped both batsmen.Chennai had crawled to 39 for 1 in eight overs when Badrinath decided to counter-punch. He trotted out to Kartik and launched him for four through long-off. Kartik tossed the next ball further up, and Badrinath carved him inside-out for a six. Badrinath came out again later in the over, hoodwinking Kartik into dropping short, and then glided him to third man. The over went for 16, and in next over, Badrinath opened up the off side again, lofting Yuvraj for six more. Seventy-seven required off 60, and Chennai did not look back from there.Rahul Sharma thought he had got Badrinath to edge the first ball of the 11th behind, but the umpire gave it not out and replays were inconclusive. Vijay managed to swipe Jesse Ryder over midwicket but his scratchy innings ended in typical fashion when he holed out against a slow legcutter. Badrinath carried on as if nothing had happened, angling near-yorkers to third man and drilling half-volleys to the straight boundary. Suresh Raina ended the contest in the 18th over, muscling Jerome Taylor for sixes over long-off.In reality, Pune lost the match in the first half itself. Ryder fell top-edging an effort ball from Doug Bollinger that rose quickly from short of a length. Mohnish Mishra perished to the pull as well, not bothering to adjust to the length after plonking his front foot forward. Nuwan Kulasekara then dismissed Mithun Manhas with a trademark inducker that squeezed between bat and pad to disturb the leg bail. Manish Pandey departed to a replay of Mishra’s brain-fade, cross-batting Tim Southee off the front foot straight to mid-on, as Pune stumbled to 41 for 4.Yuvraj survived a loose flail at a Kulasekara offcutter first ball. He thumped the next delivery, one of the few over-pitched by Kulasekara, through cover. Thereafter he settled in carefully, and set himself for a late assault. Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa tried to dominate spin, and managed to cart R Ashwin for sixes before falling to his carom ball for the second time in three days. Yuvraj opened up after Uthappa’s fall, lifting Ashwin with the angle over midwicket before launching Doug Bollinger straight for the shot of the afternoon. He slammed Tim Southee for two sixes in the last over as Pune finished their innings with a flourish. Their last five overs yielded 50, but it was not good enough. What Pune missed was a batsman with the technical excellence and mental fortitude of Badrinath to support Yuvraj.

Spurs may sell ‘important’ Conte favourite

Tottenham Hotspur could also sell an ‘important’ player who manager Antonio Conte ‘raves about’, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites exodus?

This upcoming Spurs transfer window looks set to be the most interesting one in quite some time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lilywhites transfer chief Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy, tasked with backing Conte ahead of the 2022/2023 Premier League season, are reportedly going to sit down with the Italian as he eyes six major signings (The Telegraph).

However, amid their financial complications off the pitch, with club debt mounting to around £706 million, it is imperative that the club offload surplus players to balance the books and bolster Conte’s transfer kitty.

Their homegrown quota also presents a complication with reliable journalist Matt Law recently claiming that, if Spurs want to sign an overseas forward this summer, one of Steven Bergwijn or Lucas Moura may have to be offloaded.

The Latest: Gold backs possible Bergwijn exit…

Writing for football.london in the last 24 hours, another credible source in Tottenham correspondent Gold has now backed that Bergwijn could also leave north London amid consistent exit links surrounding other players.

This is despite the fact Conte ‘raves about’ his Dutch winger, even calling him an ‘important’ player, with Gold adding that Bergwijn is unlikely to want to stay for 22/23 amid his lack of minutes.

The Verdict: Stick or twist?

The Netherlands international has proven to be a useful option for Conte over this campaign.

His added time brace to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win at Leicester City in late January is evidence of the player’s impact and quality when given an opportunity, and could even be the moment that secures Champions League football come the end of the campaign.

Bergwijn’s versatility as an attacking outlet from the wide positions and further forward is another incentive for Spurs to keep hold of the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Despite his quality, though, a mooted move back to the Eredivisie with footballing giants Ajax could be too enticing to ignore – and if the 24-year-old pushes for a move – Spurs may well need to consider a sale depending on their possible offer.

Abbottabad go top with nine-wicket win

Round-up of the fourth day of the seventh round of Division Two of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-2010Abbottabad moved to the top of the table with a nine-wicket win against bottom side Quetta at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Quetta’s lower order put up a fight on the fourth day, with Taimur Khan scoring 89 and legspinner Kashif Sattar getting 49 as the visitors reached 348 from their overnight score of 167 for 5. The damage, though, had been done in the first innings, when Abbottabad had taken a 254-run lead. It meant they needed only 95 to win with around a third of the day to play on Tuesday. Opener Fawad Khan didn’t waste any time, getting 59 off 43 balls, and taking Abbottabad home in 13.5 overs.Pakistan Television’s new-ball bowlers Mohammad Ali and Zahoor Khan took five wickets each to bowl Lahore Shalimar out for 106 and give their team a 242-run victory at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. The hosts could last only 22.2 overs in their second innings, as only four of their batsmen reached double figures. Zahoor’s five-for gave him nine wickets for the match. Pakistan Television made a quick declaration on the fourth morning, after adding just 17 to their overnight total of 189 for 6 and allowing Zohaib Ahmed to complete his half-century. The win takes them to within three points of Lahore Shalimar in the table.Fast bowler Lal Kumar helped Hyderabad to their first win of the season, against Peshawar at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar. The visitors won by 252 runs after bowling Peshawar out for 126 in their second innings, with Kumar taking 5 for 42. Hyderabad were cautious with their declaration, batting for 35 overs on the fourth day and leaving the hosts an impossible target of 378. Kumar then helped convert the guaranteed three points into nine, as Peshawar’s top order collapsed to 39 for 5. Peshawar could only last 34.5 overs and move below Hyderabad in the table.Karachi Whites needed just 21.2 overs on the fourth day to complete a seven-wicket win against Lahore Ravi at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. After the fall of three early wicket, Wajihuddin (54*) and Rameez Aziz (34*) held firm to take Karachi to the target of 121. The win pushes Karachi to third, two places above Lahore Ravi in the table.

Tottenham: Conte ‘probing’ for Bastoni

As per Calciomercato, some news has come to light on a ‘top summer priority’ for Tottenham Hotspur and their manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Spurs targets identified?

Sharing a transfer update earlier this month, The Athletic lifted the lid on Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s list of summer targets for a real priority position.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to their sources, the Lilywhites have identified strengthening their left-sided centre-back ranks as a real priority, with a few big names reportedly on their agenda.

Writing on Twitter, Jack Pitt-Brooke claimed that Joško Gvardiol (RB Leipzig), Sven Botman (Lille) and Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg) are all targets, along with Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni.

Sharing an update on the latter, Calciomercato have made a claim involving Conte.

The Latest: Conte ‘probes’ for Bastoni…

As per their sources, backing The Athletic’s claim, Conte has personally given the green light to the signing of a left-sided centre-back, suggesting the move to Paratici.

In addition, Bastoni is apparently a target, with the Italian head coach now ‘probing the hypothesis of re-embracing one of his pupils’ at Spurs.

The Verdict: Make a move?

The £122,000-per-week defender, who has been tipped as an international heir to Italy footballing legend Giorgio Chiellini, could seriously boost Conte’s defensive options and come as a long-term addition at Tottenham.

Just 23 years old, the Nerrazzuri defender was a regular under Conte as his Inter side lifted the 2020/21 Scudetto, starting 33 Serie A matches in that triumphant campaign.

It’s clear that Bastoni is favoured by the Spurs manager, and with Italian football experts like Kaustubh Pandey (Get Italian Football News) calling him ‘world class’, the centre-back may well be a brilliant prospective addition in north London.
