Recent reports have claimed that Connor Goldson is set to sign a new deal at Rangers despite interest from West Ham, which would be a huge boost for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox this summer.

According to Football Insider, the 28-year-old will sign a new contract at Rangers before the transfer window shuts after negotiations stalled in April, although David Moyes’ side are still said to be keen on the former Brighton defender.

Goldson was in superb form for Gerrard’s side last season, playing every single minute in the Premiership, contributing four goals and two assists in the top flight. He was a huge part of the incredible defensive effort which saw the Bears concede just 13 goals in 38 league matches, helping Gerrard’s side register an unbeaten season as they comfortably won the title.

It is no surprise that he is attracting interest from the Premier League, and with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season, Rangers may well have been forced to cash in on the centre-back this summer had they failed to agree on a new deal.

Fortunately for Rangers fans and Gerrard, it now seems as if the 28-year-old’s future lies at Ibrox, where he will likely be a key player once again next season as they look to defend their Premiership title whilst also competing in the Champions League.

Since joining from Brighton in 2018, Goldson has gone on to make 162 appearances for Rangers, so it is clear that he is a hugely important member of Gerrard’s squad, and it is undoubtedly good news that he looks set to extend his stay for a few more years.

The 41-year-old manager is clearly a big fan of the powerful centre-back, as he was full of praise for him last season, saying: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a true warrior.

“He’s had a lot of stick over the years, wrongly in my opinion. But he’s continued to improve and has been one of our most consistent players. I wasn’t too happy with the backline in Belgium on Thursday but if you look at the big picture, Goldson has been absolutely immense.”

Therefore, if the £6.75m-rated defender does indeed sign a new deal in the coming weeks, then it will come as a massive boost to Gerrard.

Some have used it as a chance to breathe life back into tired bodies, others have got out and had a hit for their provinces.With the diet of one-day cricket we have just completed I have to say it was tough and I am looking forward to this Test series.In the Tests there are chances to build pressure, for the better player to come out on top because the opportunity to rely on luck is decreased compared to the one-dayers.If you look at both sides, both are missing their in form strike bowlers in Shane Bond and Darren Gough so that cancels each out.We have the better spin bowler and the seamers are pretty evenly matched.The batting is where I believe we will beat England.Firstly we have six specialist batters followed by Nos 7 and 8 who have both scored test hundreds and No 9 who has a Test 90.The tail is an important part of our armoury and this is hopefully where we can beat the English.You still have to take 20 wickets to win a Test but through large scores going on the board, more pressure can be exerted in the middle.Last week I went down to Hagley Park in Christchurch to watch the England v Canterbury match.Firstly, I should have been playing in it but with my back still not quite 100% it was decided I should take the cautious option and get ready for the Test match.How the Canterbury Cricket Association had got the ground looking with the marquees and the picket fence was a real credit to them. With cricket in New Zealand being pushed more to the back in the major stadiums it brought home the need to look for cricket specific grounds for the longer form of the game.While we should still play one-day games at our major grounds, Test matches should start to be played elsewhere.Spare a thought for the Jade groundsman, Chris Lewis, who had a rugby match on Saturday and then has to get the ground ready on Wednesday for the cricket Test!Drop-in pitches are a solution but it is not only the playing pitch that comes into focus, the practice wickets are also not up to international standard because the grounds are not cricket specific and there is not enough room at venues to house a cricket net structure.What we practice on is just as vital as what we play on.

Tottenham Hotspur are looking at Inter Milan’s Croatia international Ivan Perisic, according to a report from Fussball Transfers.

The lowdown

32-year-old winger Perisic is about to enter the final year of his contract at San Siro and is valued at £9million by Transfermarkt.

English fans had a glimpse of him on Sunday as Croatia fell to a 1-0 defeat at Wembley in their Euro 2020 Group D opener.

Perisic scored five goals and provided five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Inter last season.

He spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, helping Hansi Flick’s men to win the treble.

The latest

The report states that the list of clubs interested in Perisic is growing ‘longer and longer’.

Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal are said to have lodged an enquiry, while Manchester United are also monitoring the situation.

The player himself is ‘drawn’ to a move to either England or Spain.

He would only consider returning to Germany with Bayern, the report adds.

The verdict

Perisic’s age may make this transfer look somewhat undesirable, but you’d expect the fee to be relatively low, and he’s proven himself to a consistent performer.

He’d be an excellent squad option for Spurs, or indeed, one of their Premier League rivals, for a couple of seasons.

Spurs will want to maximise their chances of landing some long-awaited silverware in the Europa Conference League and securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. To do that, they’ll need dependable depth, and that’s exactly what Perisic would represent.

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Marko Grujic to leave the Reds permanently this summer, following reported interest from Porto.

Jurgen Klopp acquired the services of the midfielder back in January 2016, interestingly making him his first-ever signing at Anfield.

Grujic has had a frustrating time of things at Liverpool, however, making just 16 appearances to date and scoring one solitary goal.

The 25-year-old Serb has found himself way down the midfield pecking order, leading to loan moves to Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff City, Hertha Berlin and now Porto.

According to Record [via Sport Witness],  the Portuguese giants want to sign Grujic permanently this summer, following an impressive spell there.

It is believed that Porto will try to sign the 10-time capped Serbia international for less than the €23million Liverpool wanted for him last season.
