pontuou Tite

O próximo desafio do Flamengo será a estreia da Libertadores. O Rubro-Negro vai enfrentar o Millonarios da Colômbia na terça-feira (2), às 19h, em partida válida pela 1ª rodada da competição.

"Can't cope" – Paul Scholes slams incapable Man Utd trio ahead of Liverpool game

Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to face Liverpool, club legend Paul Scholes has taken aim at three Old Trafford stars who are “not capable” of playing their part.

Fernandes calls for "stability" at Man Utd

While a trip to Anfield will bring back bad recent memories for United, Ruben Amorim’s side are actually facing the Reds at a good time.

Liverpool entered the international break off the back of three-straight defeats in all competitions, and are potentially vulnerable to another upset on Merseyside.

United, meanwhile, defeated Sunderland in comfortable fashion before the break in a game that featured a second goal in as many games for Benjamin Sekso and a solid debut performance from Senne Lammens. The victory has, at least somewhat, eased growing pressure on Amorim — but club captain Bruno Fernandes is still calling for more “stability”.

For the time being, Amorim’s job is safe even after another disappointing start.

As the rumours continue to surround potential candidates to replace the former Sporting CP boss, including the likes of Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, INEOS are seemingly ready to back their man.

That’s not to say that things won’t change, however, and club legend Scholes has now slammed three players who are “not capable” of helping to save Amorim’s job.

Scholes slams Man Utd trio who are getting "found out"

Speaking to The Times, Scholes slammed Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Casemiro — describing them as “not capable” and “not strong enough” in a scathing review.

Watch out Mount: Man Utd's "incredible" talent can steal the no.7 shirt

Manchester United have a star on their hands who could take the number seven shirt off Mason Mount.

All in their 30s, Scholes may have a point. Although Maguire has rediscovered some of his best form at times, questions are still asked about his ability to take United back into European football.

Shaw, meanwhile, continues to struggle on the injury front and remains a player that United should have replaced at this stage. Similar can also be said for Casemiro, even after he put a very bad run of form behind him not so long ago.

Man Utd set to push for "amazing" English signing, £52m bid in the works

Manchester United are now planning to push for an “amazing” midfielder, who has been identified as their top target in the middle of the park, and a £52m offer is in the works.

Man United made it three Premier League wins on the spin for the first time under Ruben Amorim at the weekend, defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2, which means Frank Ilett, also known as ‘The United Strand’ is just two wins away from finally getting a haircut.

The United supporter has already gone over a year without getting a trim, having vowed not to do so until Amorim’s side win five games on the bounce, and only Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur stand in their way after the victory over the Seagulls.

Things are finally looking up for the Red Devils, who have overtaken Liverpool and moved up to sixth in the Premier League table, and Gary Neville has revealed the players have fully bought into Amorim, who has finally staved off some speculation about his future.

Neville said: “The players really like him, they like him a lot … The players really like him and want to do well for him, and I think that’s come through in the last week or so.”

That said, Amorim is still keen to make improvements to his squad, with it well-known the manager wants to bring in a new central midfielder, and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher has emerged as a target, with the United boss approving the move last week.

There has now been a new update on Man United’s pursuit of Gallagher, with a report from Spain revealing the former Chelsea man is their top target in midfield, and they are considering submitting an offer of around €60m (£52m) for his services.

Casemiro replacement: Man Utd prepare to make offer for £60m "duel monster"

Manchester United are preparing to make a move to sign a star who could replace Casemiro in midfield.

The Red Devils are planning to push for the midfielder’s signature, and could make a move in the January transfer window, although it is unclear whether Atletico would be willing to sanction a departure.

"Amazing" Gallagher could be solid option for Amorim

Once lauded for his “amazing character” by Frank Lampard, the Englishman is well-known for his stamina, with Nathan Dyer saying: “His work rate is insane. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. He just doesn’t stop.”

However, not only does the 25-year-old have a good attitude and work hard, but he is also very skilled at winning possession, placing in the 97th percentile for interceptions per 90 over the past year, when compared to other midfielders.

The 22-time England international isn’t prolific in front of goal, but he is certainly capable of contributing on the front foot, chipping in with 18 goals and 13 assists in 136 Premier League appearances, while also scoring once at international level.

Gallagher arguably wouldn’t be the flashiest of signings, but he could be a solid option for Amorim in midfield, given his ability at both ends of the pitch.

NLCS Game 1 Laid Bare the Biggest Difference Between the Brewers and Dodgers

The Brewers take away the ball on the ground and at the wall, so in the sixth inning, Freddie Freeman lined a four-seamer to the only place they couldn’t get to it: the stands.

The home run gave the Dodgers a lead they would hold to win Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, 2–1. It gave them cushion as their bullpen faltered in the ninth inning. It gave the Brewers the kind of fits they are used to when it comes to that player. “Freddie Freeman has been a Brewer killer for a while,” lamented Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy. “So hopefully he’ll oversleep tomorrow or something.”

It also rendered moot one of the wildest plays in recorded memory: With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Max Muncy drove a would-be grand slam 404 feet to center, where center fielder Sal Frelick leapt for—and bobbled—then caught—the ball. He fired it to shortstop Joey Ortiz, who relayed home. On the base paths, the runners broke into chaos, darting forward as if for a double, then back as if for a sacrifice fly. Teoscar Hernández barreled home from third just as the throw reached the plate. Amid the chaos, catcher William Contreras raced to third. For a moment, it seemed no one was quite sure what was happening. After a three-minute replay review, the word came down from New York: It was the first 8–6–2U double play in postseason history.

(If Frelick had caught it clean, that would have been the second out and it would have been a tag play at the plate for the third, which Hernández beat, so it would have been bases loaded, two out. But because the ball hit the wall before Frelick got hold of it, the ball was live and it was a force play at home for the second out, and then a force play at third for the third.)

The 97-win Brewers, best in the sport, have spent much of the run-up to this series casting themselves as scrappy underdogs who win games with grit and the power of friendship. They keep the competition off balance, playing tight defense and running the bases aggressively; no other team forced its opponents to make more errors this season. Their $108 million payroll this season ranked No. 24 in the sport and is less than a third of what the Dodgers spent on players: $329 million.

“I’m sure that most Dodgers players can’t name eight guys on our roster,” Murphy said before Game 1, having already discarded his last bit: calling his players the Average Joes and then complaining that people were calling them average Joes. The Dodgers rolled their eyes at this routine—“We know the act,” said Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts—but there is something to be said for paying superstars to play like superstars. Freeman, the first baseman (who is making $162 million over six years), and shortstop Mookie Betts ($365 million, 12 years) provided the offense; lefty Blake Snell (whom the Dodgers signed this offseason for $182 million over five years) offered just about everything else.

He threw eight sparkling, one-hit, no-walk innings, striking out 10. He did not throw a fastball in the seventh. He allowed a total of two balls to the outfield, none after the second inning. He picked off the only hitter who reached base against him.

In his 10 years in Milwaukee, Murphy said, “I think it’s the most dominant performance against us.”

The Brewers’ collection of “misfit toys,” as Murphy insists on calling them, nearly matched him: Opener Aaron Ashby, a fourth-round draft pick chosen for this task essentially because he is left-handed and therefore has a chance to shut down two-way star Shohei Ohtani, walked Ohtani but otherwise survived the first inning. In came Quinn Priester, who did not make the Red Sox’ rotation out of spring training and whom the Brewers acquired for two minor leaguers and a draft pick; he got through the next four. Chad Patrick, who came to Milwaukee in a trade with the A’s for utilityman Abraham Toro, allowed that Freeman home run. Jared Koenig, who was released by the Padres in 2023, got five outs. Closer Trevor Megill, who was waived in ’21 and then traded for a player to be named later and cash to the Brewers in ’23, got three more.

Only Abner Uribe, who signed as an 18-year-old out of his native Dominican Republic for $85,000 in ’18, made more than one mistake. He walked Muncy to open the ninth, then allowed a single to Kiké Hernández. After a sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third, he intentionally walked Ohtani, then very unintentionally walked Betts to bring in a crucial insurance run.

This became relevant only minutes later, when the Dodgers’ only weakness—their bullpen—struck. Roki Sasaki, the flamethrowing starter who flamed out in the majors and spent much of the season rediscovering himself in the minors before being converted to postseason closer, struggled with his command, walking the first hitter he saw, then allowing a ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly to bring the game back within a run. After another walk, Roberts summoned erstwhile closer Blake Treinen, who walked the bases loaded before getting away with a fastball a foot above the zone for a whiff.

“It’s not going to come easy,” said Roberts. “This is going to be a grind. It’s going to be tough.”

The Average Joes can still win this series. They just have a smaller margin for error. And unfortunately for them, the next Joe Millionaire awaits: the guy who starts Game 2 for the Dodgers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, is the highest-paid pitcher of all time.

Cal Raleigh Surpasses Ken Griffey Jr. for Mariners' Franchise Record With 57th HR

Cal Raleigh is re-writing the record books once again—this time for the Mariners.

Raleigh hit his 57th home run of the season off Astros pitcher Framber Valdez on Saturday, and now passes Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. for the franchise's single-season home run record.

Griffey Jr., a Hall of Famer and 13-time All-Star that played for Seattle from 1989-99 and 2009-10, hit 56 home runs in a season for the Mariners in both 1997 and 1998. Now, Raleigh has passed that mark and his 57 long balls are tied for the 17th-most in a single season by any player in MLB history.

Earlier this week, Raleigh tied Griffey Jr.'s record and also broke Mickey Mantle's record for the most home runs in a single season by a switch-hitter. Mantle hit 54 home runs in 1961 to set the record, and over 60 years later, Raleigh has broken that mark and become the second switch-hitter to surpass 50 home runs in a season.

Along with these records, Raleigh previously broke Salvador Perez's record for most home runs in a season by a catcher. Perez hit 48 home runs in 2021, and Raleigh surpassed that nearly a month ago.

MLB Hands Out Punishment for Benches-Clearing Brawl Between Giants and Rockies

Tuesday night's clash between the Giants and Rockies got off to a fiery start, as benches cleared and punches were thrown in the first inning after Rafael Devers hit a two-run home run.

Among the players involved, three were ejected from the game: Willy Adames and Matt Chapman from the Giants and Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland.

On Wednesday, MLB issued some discipline to the players involved. Chapman was fined and suspended for one game, though he was the only receive a suspension from the league. The other players, including Freeland, Devers and Adames, were only fined.

Chapman's role in the brawl was a bit more sigificant than others, as he was seen pushing Freeland when the benches had cleared. Despite that, Chapman intends to appeal the suspension, so he'll be available to play Wednesday night.

The amount each player was fined has not yet been reported.

The incident occurred in the top of the first inning, before a single out had even been recorded in Tuesday's game. The divisional rivals play again Wednesday night, with first pitch slated for 8:40 p.m. ET.

Josh Naylor Contract: Full Details of Five-Year Deal With Mariners

The Mariners made the first big splash of MLB free agency on Sunday night, agreeing to a long-term contract that will keep Josh Naylor in the organization for another five seasons.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan provided some further information on the agreement between Naylor and Seattle on Monday, indicating that the contract would be worth a total of $92.5 million. As such, Naylor will collect an annual average value of $18.5 million throughout the course of the deal. The contract does not include any deferred money. Additionally, Naylor’s deal to return the Mariners comes with a full no-trade clause.

The $18.5 million Naylor is due in 2026 would make him the third-highest earner on Seattle’s roster, behind only Luis Castillo ($24.15 million) and Julio Rodríguez ($20.19 million). His $92.5 million deal overtakes Ichiro Suzuki for the eighth richest contract in franchise history. Robinson Canó’s 10-year, $240 million contract still stands as the largest deal ever given to a Mariners player.

It’s a big commitment from the Mariners, but it shows just how highly regarded Naylor has become within the organization since arriving at the trade deadline in a deal with the Diamondbacks. Naylor quickly became a fan favorite in Seattle, and now he’s set to remain with the franchise through the 2030 season.

Last season, in 54 games with the Mariners, Naylor logged a .831 OPS with nine home runs, 33 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

Freddie Freeman Had the Perfect Joke After Belting Game-Winning HR in 18th Inning

Freddie Freeman was a World Series hero once again for the Dodgers on Monday night as his walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 18th inning gave Los Angeles a thrilling—and exhausting—6-5 win over the Blue Jays. The Dodgers now lead the series 2-1 and will have Shohei Ohtani pitching in Tuesday night's Game 4.

Freeman, who hit a walk-off grand slam in Game 1 of the last year's World Series against the Yankees, sent the fans at Dodger Stadium into hysterics yet again when he blasted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in dead center to finally put an end to one of the best World Series games that has ever been played.

Here's that blast:

Freeman spoke with MLB Network's Lauren Shehadi moments after his heroic blast and he had a perfect joke, saying he almost had a home run a lot earlier in the game.

"I just missed one, I think it was like 22 innings ago…" Freeman said with a laugh.

Here's that interview:

Freeman's home run came six hours and 39 minutes after the game began. Both teams had a ton of opportunities in extra innings before the lefty finally put things away with another dinger that he will never forget.

Now it will be interesting to see how Ohtani will be able to bounce back in Game 4. He was a force once again in Game 3, hitting two more home runs and adding two doubles. While he didn't have to play the field, you have to think sleep might have come hard for him after that wild, and very long, night at Dodger Stadium.

Karnataka, and the art of finding a way to win

It’s been a season with challenges, but the Karnataka side have reached the Ranji knockouts as strong favourites nonetheless

Shashank Kishore in Jammu19-Feb-2020One of the byproducts of dominating the domestic circuit is often not having the best players available for you at important times because they’re either with India or India A. For Karnataka, having the cream of their batting away – KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Manish Pandey – at different times during this Ranji Trophy season opened up windows of opportunity for the others. What has worked for Karnataka is that they have had the likes of R Samarth and Karun Nair overcoming slumps to stand up when the “big stars” have been away. These are characteristics of champion teams, finding ways tide over the absences of key players. And now with Manish Pandey back in the line-up, Karnataka’s batting, which seemed shaky until not long ago, receives a massive lift.”It’s a big boost,” Nair, the captain, said ahead of the quarter-finals. “He has so many thoughts and ideas, just the way he is, he is a very positive person. It’s really nice to have him back.” Pandey’s injection gives some leeway to a middle order still regaining its lost touch.Samarth, for example, was left out of the side after scores of 11, 4 and 0 in his first two games, which came on the back of a poor season last year. His T20 and one-day performances too had been poor. From being an India A regular, Samarth found himself unable to even get a berth in the state side. Fortunately for him, the Indian team put through a request to rest Mayank Agarwal for the clash against Mumbai, ahead of India A’s departure to New Zealand.Samarth, who had left the camp, rejoined the team in Mumbai and turned his season around with a match-winning 86. That win gave Karnataka momentum. And since that 86, he’s racked up scores of 34, 63, 74, 108 in four of his eight knocks, some of which Nair described as “tough runs that help the team.”The century against Madhya Pradesh came on a green top in Shimoga, one that pleased Samarth like no other. “I would rate that innings very highly,” Samarth aid. “The wicket was doing a lot and I had to grind my teeth off. On such wickets, it was important to keep your mind fresh and be present in that moment. It was important to not focus on the previous ball.”Nair himself went through a lean run after a promising start to the domestic season that included a century and a 92 in the season-opening Duleep Trophy. Often, he’d get pretty 20s and then get out. Until it got to a point when external noises about his batting began to irk a normally shy and poker-faced Nair.K Gowtham played a fine hand with the bat•PTI Prior to the final league game against Baroda, he’d made 220 runs in nine innings. On the third morning, with Karnataka looking to set up a first-innings advantage, Nair had a chat with Rahul Dravid before play began. The former India captain spoke to him about his shuffle and trigger movement. And while one chat is unlikely to have changed much technically, in the mind, Nair appeared calmer and responded with two solid outings in a match-winning cause. The form has returned now, as has his confidence. Then there’s young Devdutt Padikkal, the top run-getter in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophies. He started the season well and has six half-centuries, but hasn’t been able to convert his starts into three figures. As for Shreyas Gopal, he hasn’t quite been the utility player that he was in past seasons. Previously, he had often been the batting crisis man if the top order failed. This season, he’s neither managed runs nor the wickets he usually picks up by a handful. And while question marks have been raised over his place, the selectors have backed him despite having just 224 runs in 12 innings, along with eight wickets in seven matches. This is another chance to vindicate that call.If despite all this, Karnataka, who don’t have a single batsman with 600-plus runs or a bowler with 35-plus wickets going into the knockouts, it’s because the runs and wickets have been distributed.Abhimanyu Mithun has shouldered a bulk of the responsibility, picking 27 wickets while Ronit More has 20 scalps. In earlier seasons, the pace duo of R Vinay Kumar and Mithun have had a solid support cast. This season, Karnataka have struggled to nail down a third pace option consistently. Left-arm seamer Prateek Jain has been steady without being spectacular, while V Koushik has not quite built on a promising start. But that was with Prasidh Krishna absent through injury. Prasidh returned for the match against Baroda, and brought in added incisiveness with his pace. Prasidh is tall, hits the deck hard, and is the only bowler capable of bowling in excess of 140 clicks in this line-up.Yet for all their struggles at different times, Karnataka have found ways to get past the line. Somehow, all their form issues have ironed themselves out as the season has stretched. And now, Karnataka need one final push to make for an unprecedented domestic treble after bossing their way to the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy championship wins.
