The Premier League legend was speaking about his former club with . When asked whether Martinez would be a good signing, the French defender was blunt in his assessment, saying he did not know if the Argentinian would "be a good fit for Chelsea". The Stamford Bridge outfit have been linked with the player over the past week.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gallas referred to some of Martinez's divisive antics on the pitch, questioning whether they are emblematic of a top keeper. While he conceded the Villa stopper has been successful with Argentina, he still reported "serious doubts" about his temperament. The ex-Arsenal defender then also name-checked some of the stoppers he played with, suggesting Martinez did not stack up against them, thanks in part to his bombastic nature.

  • WHAT GALLAS SAID

When asked if he thought adding Martinez to the Chelsea changing room would be a risk for Enzo Maresca, Gallas said: "I don't know if Emi Martinez would be a good fit for Chelsea."

He added: "He’s a good goalkeeper. Obviously, he was a key player for Argentina. He’s done well at Aston Villa since he joined them from Arsenal those years ago, but I have to admit, I have some serious doubts about whether he would be a good fit for Chelsea.

"I don't know if he’s got the right profile to be the goalkeeper of Chelsea. When I think about his antics, I just don't think he would be a positive addition to the club.

"People talk about his personality, his passion, I’m not sure that is a good fit for the club. I don't think he would be the right goalkeeper.

"Chelsea need a goalkeeper that is as good as him or maybe better, but with a different profile. Someone that does their job without doing all of the other stuff that Martinez does.

"I'm sorry but give me the name of one goalkeeper with the same profile. Name another goalkeeper who grabs his crotch and dances around when he makes a save, one goalkeeper who has done that who has played for a big club. You won’t be able to name one.

"Goalkeepers are crazy. Jens Lehmann, he was crazy. Carlo Cudicini, he was crazy. Cech was cool. Lehmann would never behave like Martinez – Martinez brings too much negative attention. You want a goalkeeper to make saves, keep clean sheets and leave the pitch. Martinez doesn’t do that."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MARTINEZ?

Regardless of Martinez's antics, the fact remains he backs those less savoury moments up with high profile, match-winning performances. That will make him a hot commodity if Villa are compelled to move on. Should Chelsea follow Gallas' train of thought, Manchester United fans will be happy to welcome the Argentinian to Old Trafford.

Boult all but leads New Zealand into semi-finals; SL's Champions Trophy hopes fade

New Zealand all but booked their place in the World Cup semi-final against India with a dominant five-wicket win – with 160 balls to spare – against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. The result took them to ten points, and a net run rate (NRR) of 0.743, leaving Pakistan needing to beat England by 287 runs, while Afghanistan need an even more fantastical 438-run win over South Africa, if they are to surpass New Zealand’s NRR.If Pakistan were to chase, they would have no chance of qualifying. As for Sri Lanka, the margin of defeat against New Zealand left them languishing in ninth place, thus out of qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They now need one of England or Bangladesh to suffer defeats – while Netherlands also need to lose to India – to the extent that their respective NRRs drop below Sri Lanka’s.New Zealand’s win was the product of an all-round performance with bat and ball. While the threat of rain in Bengaluru ultimately proved to be a red herring, winning the toss and putting Sri Lanka in seemed to be the most prudent way to ensure both an NRR-boosting victory as well as hedge against any rain interruptions and DLS interventions. And so it proved. Despite the loss of some late wickets, Sri Lanka’s total of 171 was comfortably dealt with, as Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell all pitched in with forties. On a pitch that proved even better to bat on under lights, Ravindra and Conway put on 86 to break open the chase, before Mitchell’s 43 off just 31 balls rammed home the result. All three fell before the finish, but the win was never in doubt.Kusal Perera counterattacked for Sri Lanka amid plenty of early blows•AFP/Getty Images

That it was so easy in the end was down to a solid bowling effort and a haphazard outing with the bat for Sri Lanka. New Zealand shared the wickets around, with Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner and Ravindra picking up two apiece, though Trent Boult’s 3 for 37 was what had set his side up at the top of Sri Lanka’s innings – and earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.Such was New Zealand’s dominance that they won so comfortably despite dropping three catches. The first was of Kusal Perera without scoring, as Tom Latham grassed a straightforward caught behind. Latham got his shot at redemption a ball later though, with Pathum Nissanka nicking through for an even more simple chance.Kusal Mendis fell a few overs later, splicing a leading edge to deep third while looking to hit over midwicket, with Sadeera Samarawickrama following soon after edging through to Mitchell at first slip. Both those wickets were grabbed by the excellent Boult, taking him past 50 wickets in World Cups – he ended the game with that tally on 52.But even as wickets fell at one end, Perera functioned as a one-man army, finding boundaries all around the Chinnaswamy Stadium, and punishing New Zealand for that early drop. Two picked-up sixes over long-on off Tim Southee were the highlights of some belligerent ball striking, as he brought up his 50 off just 22 deliveries – the joint second-fastest by a Sri Lankan in ODI World Cups.Trent Boult went past 50 World Cup wickets•ICC/Getty Images

An over later, though, Charith Asalanka was adjudged lbw off Boult after a well-taken review, before Perera fell a few deliveries later, getting under a delivery from Ferguson that was not full enough to drive and slicing it to cover.Sri Lanka were in free fall at 70 for 5 in the tenth over, before Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva put up mild resistance. Dhananjaya was reprieved too, courtesy Latham’s second drop of the game, a tough chance off Santner during that stand of 34. Santner’s guile, control and subtle variations in pace, however, were eventually too good for the pair.Mathews was the first to go in what might have been his last World Cup innings – perhaps even ODI innings – lunging forward at one that was floated up and then dipped. He failed to get to the pitch, and the bounce and turn did the rest, grazing the outside edge to Mitchell at slip. It was a similar story for Dhananjaya, after another flighted delivery with some added bounce found its way into Mitchell’s hands.Maheesh Theekshana batted for 91 deliveries•ICC/Getty Images

Chamika Karunaratne, making just his second appearance at this World Cup, did not fare any better, edging behind Ferguson. A swift end to the innings seemed imminent but Maheesh Theekshana, in partnerships with Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka, showed the resistance that was lacking throughout the rest of the innings. In facing 91 deliveries, Theekshana played more balls than all of Sri Lanka’s frontline batters combined. Even Madushanka’s 48 balls were more than what any other batter faced apart from Theekshana.Theekshana remained unbeaten on 38 – the second-highest scorer of the innings – as the ninth and tenth wicket stands, despite only contributing 58 runs, spanned 139 deliveries. Sri Lanka lost their eighth wicket in the 24th over, but it wasn’t until the 47th that New Zealand dismissed them, with Ravindra finding Madushanka’s edge for Latham to complete a sharp take.It took a while for New Zealand to get there, after winning their first four matches and then losing their next four, but this victory has all but ensured a fifth consecutive ODI World Cup semi-final.

Sturdy Belgian defence broken down in 41st minuteRed Flames lose steam in stilted second halfWullaert unable to turn half chances into goalFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportTELL ME MORE

Belgium were arguably the stronger of the two teams for the bulk of the first half, frustrating their opponents with a compact 5-4-1 formation. Even committing so many resources at the back, the Belgians were able to break at pace, and had created the only clear-cut chance of the game until the very end of the half. The Red Flames record scorer and captain Tessa Wullaert rippling the side netting of Laura Giuliani's goal in the 41st minute.

Italy took the lead just a few moments later. The previously regimented Belgium defence was compromised when left wing back Laura Deloose tried to break on a 50:50 as Italy looked to switch the play. She was pipped to the ball by Lucia Di Guglielmo, who in turn found Caruso at the edge of the area in acres of space. The midfielder took a moment to steady her feet, before powering fizzing, curling effort into the top corner.

Belgium again looked the brighter of the two sides after the break, but despite finding Wullaert in the Italian box on multiple occasions, again the Red Flames struggled to fashion any clear-cut chances. It was Italy who almost doubled their lead somewhat against the run of play in the 65th minute, when Christina Girelli flicked a near post cross towards the Belgian goal, forcing an instinctive save out of Lisa Lichtfus.

Italy frustrated their opponents, breaking Belgium's momentum with repeated injury stoppages of questionable authenticity. The stilted rhythm frustrated the Belgians, and emboldened the Italians, who again should have doubled their lead when Michela Cambiaghi fired wide from the edge of the box in the 80th minute. She was again denied a few moments later, as her curled effort was tipped round the post by the impressive Lichtfus.

With no clear-cut chances in they dying embers, Belgium will rue a missed chance to gain a foothold in this tournament.

Bayern Munich midfielder Caruso took her goal with composure and power. It was a moment of brilliance in a first half that was lacking on quality in the final third.

THE BIG LOSER

Laura Deloose decided to come and get the ball in the middle of the park in the build-up to Italy's goal, she simply had to win it. Her decision set off a chain reaction of poor decisions by the Belgium defence, allowing Caruso to ghost into a shooting position. In a game plan built on defensive discipline, a momentary lapse in concentration was The Red Flames undoing.

Ashutosh Sharma breaks Yuvraj's record for fastest T20 fifty by an Indian

Ashutosh now holds the record for the second-fastest fifty in T20 cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2023Railways’ middle-order batter Ashutosh Sharma has broken Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest T20 fifty by an Indian. Ashutosh hammered his fifty off just 11 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in a Group C clash in Ranchi. Yuvraj had held the record for the last 16 years, having struck a fifty off 12 balls against England in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.Ashutosh took the crease at the score of 131 for 4 with just five overs to go. He then went on to smash 53 off 12 studded with eight sixes and just one four, which came through the covers. He fell the next ball after reaching his record-breaking half-century and walked back with a stunning strike rate of 441.66. As many as four of his sixes sailed over the covers and long-off region, two went over long-on and two more cleared the leg-side boundary behind square. Railways amassed 115 runs in just the last five overs to finish on a commanding 246 for 5, and Arunachal Pradesh were bowled out for 119 in reply, losing by 127 runs.Ashutosh, 25, was playing his second T20 for Railways and tenth overall. He had made his T20 debut in 2018 for Madhya Pradesh and last played the format in 2019. He has featured in just one 50-over game, for MP also in 2019, and is yet to make his first-class debut.Yuvraj had held the record for the fastest fifty in T20 cricket overall also for 16 years before it was broken just last month by Dipendra Singh Airee from Nepal against Mongolia in the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Yuvraj’s innings in Durban is also best remembered for his hitting six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad.

Atlético-GO nos deu trabalho o ano todo.

Quero continuar trabalhando, melhorando e representando – completou.

Sunday’s morning session will be telling, with Victoria needing a solid rearguard contribution from their lower order. Jimmy Peirson and Jack Wildermuth put on 55 for the sixth wicket before Fergus O’Neill made the breakthrough, having Peirson caught behind for 28.Wildermuth fell nine runs later, caught behind off Mitchell Perry and top-scoring with 40. THE BIGGER PICTURE

On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Roma have decided to focus on Ferguson as a reinforcement in attack; he is at the top of the Giallorossi's wish list. Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini wants to revitalise the attack in light of departures of Eldor Shomurodov and Tammy Abraham, who has joined Besiktas. Despite interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham, Roma appear to be in pole position to clinch the young Irishman.

The report from claims that Roma and Brighton are working on a loan deal, with an option to buy for around €25-30 million (£21-26m/$29-35m). This would give Roma time to assess him before making such an investment, allowing them to use their resources to strengthen other areas of the team, such as the right wing.

On the other hand, the option to sign Hojlund remains on the table, too. United would be open to letting the Danish international leave on loan this summer. Hojlund would be reunited with Gasperini at Roma, who launched his career at Atalanta, where he undoubtedly enjoyed his best season to date. Inter were also interested in the striker, but they then opted for Ange-Yoan Bonny, focusing their resources on other players. Hojlund, however, wishes to remain at Old Trafford and fight for a place under Ruben Amorim.

Adelaide Strikers' bowlers do it again to secure back-to-back titles in final thriller

Adelaide Strikers 125 for 5 (Wolvaardt 39, McGrath 38, Hancock 3-23) beat Brisbane Heat 122 for 8 (Kerr 30*, Wellington 3-16)Adelaide Strikers claimed back-to-back WBBL titles after their star-studded attack superbly defended a low total to thwart Brisbane Heat in a nerve-jangling final.Strikers had been limited to 125 for 5 at the Adelaide Oval after being shackled by disciplined Heat bowling and inventive captaincy from Jess Jonassen. But on a slow surface under lights, the final was on a knife’s edge when Heat slumped to 62 for 4 after seamer Tahlia McGrath dismissed Mignon du Preez and Laura Harris on consecutive deliveries in the 13th over.Strikers appeared set to rue missed chances to dismiss Amelia Kerr and Charli Knott in the 16th over. But seamer Megan Schutt dismissed Knott and Jonassen as Heat were left needing 13 runs off the final over.Legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington dismissed Georgia Voll on the third delivery before Mikayla Hinkley hit a first ball six as Heat required five runs off the last two deliveries. But Hinkley fell next ball and Wellington cooly denied Nicola Hancock’s attempts at a match-winning six as a crowd of 12,379 fans erupted in jubilation.Strikers’ remarkable victory thwarted Heat, who were playing their third game in five days. A late season slump had cost them a home final, but third-placed Heat reached the final after beating Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers on consecutive days at the WACA.But a well-rested Strikers, who had the week off, finished stronger to clinch a title defence with a 10th win from their last 11 games.Much of the pre-match talk had been centred around Strikers’ strong attack against Heat’s powerful batting line-up. But that battle had to wait after McGrath elected to bat in good batting conditions.Much like during the two finals at the WACA, Heat exploited bounce in the surface with Hancock bowling in-form Katie Mack in the second over. But McGrath countered with a superb cover drive boundary to get off the mark in style as she peeled off a trio of fours in her first nine balls. Her assertiveness ignited opener Laura Wolvaardt, who hit three boundaries in a row off Jonassen capped by a horror misfield in the outfield by Voll.Megan Schutt came to the fore at the death•Getty Images

Strikers recovered to reach 34 for 1 after the powerplay as an intriguing tactical battle was playing out. Six different bowlers were used in as many overs to start the match as Jonassen kept rotating her bowlers in one-over spells in a bid to unsettle the batters. The tactic eventually did the trick as Heat pegged back Strikers before Hancock produced an innings-changing over in the 10th over. She bowled an unrelenting back of a length line which left McGrath rattled after top-edging into her helmet and requiring medical attention. In the last delivery before drinks, Hancock hit the top of McGrath’s off bail after the batter charged down the pitch as Heat gained a stranglehold.Strikers only mustered 54 runs in the last 10 overs with Wolvaardt unable to rediscover her earlier rhythm and she was left frustrated on 39 after being stumped off Jonassen. In a bid for a late rally, Strikers took the power surge but Bridget Patterson fell on the first ball of the 17th over as their innings withered away.Heat had one hand on the title, but needed to get past an attack rated as the WBBL’s best. Opener Grace Harris particularly relished an early boundary against Schutt who she had delivered a barb to in the match’s lead-up.Strikers’ hopes sank when Harris, who ignited Heat in the Perth finals with belligerent batting, was dropped on 13 by Madeline Penna at first slip off returning quick Darcie Brown. But Harris fell shortly later when she holed out after failing to connect on a short delivery from offspinner Jemma Barsby. On a turning surface, Wellington proved a handful and dismissed opener Georgia Redmayne in the eighth over as Strikers clawed back.Heat were unable to get the ball away in the middle overs as the pressure heightened when du Preez and Harris were bowled on consecutive deliveries by McGrath.Having been badly dropped by Mack at deep midwicket in the 16th over, Knott fell shortly after to Schutt as the twists continued until the final ball.
