James Vince's mighty season roars on as Essex take a pounding

Michael Klinger’s T20 hundreds record is next in his sights after fifth century

James Vince followed up becoming the Vitality Blast’s highest run scorer by chalking up his fifth T20 century as Hampshire Hawks annihilated Essex.Vince is now only behind Michael Klinger in Blast hundreds having overtaken Luke Wright in the run charts on Wednesday, and only Wayne Madsen has more than his 280 runs in this year’s competition. His supreme 103 laid the foundations for a huge 215 target for the Eagles, which Nathan Ellis’ three for 10, Scott Currie’s three for 21 and Liam Dawson’s four for 21 made sure was never chasable.Dawson flowed with praise for his teammate. “It is a huge win. Vince was exceptional and proved how good a player he is. That hundred is the difference in the game.”I think he is getting better. He has been so consistent in his run scoring over the last couple of years. T20 is a high-risk game and the amount of times he scores runs is more often than not. He is getting better with age and is brilliant to have in our team.”Defending champions Hampshire eventually won by 118 runs with 35 balls to spare – the Hawks’ highest margin of victory after bowling the hosts out for 96 – to hand Essex their first T20 defeat of the year.Vince continued from his back-to-back unbeaten 88s, and his record-breaking, by pumping Aron Nijjar for two massive sixes back over his head with his first two balls faced.Ben McDermott was adjudged caught behind while Toby Albert took nine balls to get off the mark but Vince was terrorising the crowd and local residents – his eventual eight sixes threatened the slate and chimneys of the houses at the Hayes Close End.He monopolised the run-scoring, including 60 of the 101 stand with Albert, who improved his hitting to reach 38 before he was stumped.Vince was cleanly striking anything that was sent his way and brought up his century with another pulled maximum in 45 balls. He was furious when he slapped a Matt Critchley long hop to the deep midwicket boundary which began the fall of five wickets for 35 runs.Joe Weatherley had made a well-compiled 29 before he was caught at cover to follow Ross Whiteley, Aneurin Donald and James Fuller’s short stays. But a tame finale was avoided when Liam Dawson slog-swept three successive sixes to take 21 off the final over and give Hampshire 214. Daniel Sams was the only bowler not to go at a double figure run-rate for his three for 28, although Simon Harmer also pilfered three wickets.Essex tried to swing their way to victory but plays and misses dominated. Adam Rossington, who pumped two early sixes, was unfortunate to be given caught behind after the ball appeared to clip a stump rather than his bat.Dan Lawrence was lbw after 22 off 14, Feroze Khushi yorked by Dawson, Paul Walter stumped, Robin Das swatted to long off, Tom Westley drilled to cover and Nathan Ellis bowled Harmer. It had been a spell of five wickets in 23 balls for 20 runs.Dawson pinned Nijjar before Sams gave Vince his third catch of the night and Ellis his third wicket to finish off the comprehensive away victory.

Centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers could be on his way out of Celtic Park in the coming months amid rumours of a move to England, and there have been claims that Rodgers is speaking to former defender Kristoffer Ajer, who is still with Brentford, about a potential return to Glasgow.

It looks set to be a productive summer despite the club making 10 signings during the 2024/25 season, and a new target has now emerged for Celtic chiefs.

Celtic make contact for former Engels teammate Rexhbecaj

According to reports by Fussball Transfers, relayed by Sport Witness, Celtic are working on a deal to sign FC Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj.

It is claimed that the Hoops have made an approach to ask for information over a potential deal, as have Turkish side Besiktas and Italian outfit Parma.

Rexhbecaj is out of contract with Augsburg at the end of the 2025/26 season, with talks over an extension stalling recently.

The 27-year-old has been likened to Celtic star Engels, as per Football Transfers, and previously played with the current Hoops man at Augsburg. They turned out alongside each other in midfield on 38 occasions and played more than 2,000 minutes on the same pitch.

A Kosovo international, Rexhbecaj can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, and was praised by former Wolfsburg coach Eric Schmidt, who once said: “He is an incredibly powerful, aggressive and strong player. He is quite complete and can play several positions.”

A move to Celtic for Rexhbecaj, by the looks of things, a deal will be one to watch over the coming months.

The midfielder was an important part of Luis Enrique’s treble winning side as PSG ran riot against Inter in the 5-0 win in Munich last week. The team decided to celebrate their treble win in the streets of Paris when the two suspects allegedly targeted Ruiz’s house. The midfielder is not the first victim of a burglary attempt, as team-mate William Pacho was robbed in March while he was away on international duty.

Now worth less than O'Brien: Moshiri hit gold selling Everton star for £25m

David Moyes has come into the Everton hot-seat and been just the breath of fresh air needed to pull the Toffees away from relegation danger, with a draw to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out signalling his side’s eighth straight game in the Premier League without defeat.

Whilst many faces in the Everton camp looked dejected and lost towards the end of Sean Dyche’s troubled tenure, a large portion of the Blues first team personnel now look rejuvenated under the Scotsman’s newer methods, with Beto one star very much benefitting from the inspired managerial switch-up having now scored six top-flight strikes.

But, a renewed belief is coursing throughout the team at this moment in time, with a defensive star really sticking out as another figure who has taken to the return of Moyes.

Jake O'Brien's improvements under Moyes at Everton

Whilst the Toffees weren’t exactly leaking goals for fun under the dogged managerial style of Dyche, some of the defenders at Goodison Park have shown signs of improvement already under the ex-West Ham United boss.

That is definitely the case for Jake O’Brien, with the young Irishman a regular on the bench under the previous regime, only to now be a solid first-team option.

The former Olympique Lyonnais defender even grabbed his first-ever Toffees goal on the road at Brentford to finish a sterling February on the best possible note, with that month also seeing him star against Manchester United with five duels being won, on top of a clean sheet being collected at home to Leicester City.

Therefore, it looks now as if Everton have a fantastic long-term candidate to be their right-back, with both Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman towards the end of their careers, compared to the ever-improving O’Brien who has a valuation of £13m according to Transfermarkt.

Amazingly, the breakout star at the back is now worth more than a former Toffees star who was sold for a big fee to a Premier League rival back in 2022.

The Everton "machine" now worth less than O'Brien

Everton have sold on a number of players over recent years for high fees, with Amadou Onana’s name sticking out from last summer’s bumper transfer window, having won the Merseysiders £50m when he moved onto pasture new with Aston Villa.

This isn’t the only time Villa and the Toffees have had a healthy working relationship, however, with former owner Farhad Moshiri losing French full-back Lucas Digne to the Villans in January of 2022, costing the West Midlands side £25m in the process.

The Frenchman was a beloved figure when he was strutting his stuff at Goodison, with Digne going on to notch up six goals and 20 assists across 127 appearances, before inevitably breaking hearts when a move to Villa came calling.

Whilst the 31-year-old has taken to his new challenge at Villa Park well, Everton definitely hit gold selling the ex-Barcelona “machine” – as he was once lauded by football journalist Ty Bracey – when they did.

Why? Well, his steep £25m valuation has taken a hit the more his Villans career goes on.

Whilst Digne has continued to be an exciting option down the left flank with four goals and 14 assists tallied up, his valuation has slipped all the way down to a lesser £10m as per Transfermarkt, representing a £15m decrease.

He has also looked shaky at points this season for Unai Emery’s men in Premier League action, with only two clean sheets coming his way from 28 encounters a worrying statistic to chew over.

Former Everton defender Lucas Digne

Whilst Digne is still remembered as a stellar defender throughout his time on Merseyside, Everton did cash in at the best possible time with hindsight firmly on their side, as Moyes goes about picking up more and more positive results at Goodison with his revitalised troops.

Matthews ton, three-for give West Indies comfortable win over Ireland

Captain Hayley Matthews’ all-round show where she scored 109 and followed it up with a three-wicket burst helped West Indies ease to a 58-run win over Ireland in the opening women’s ODI in Gros Islet.Batting first, the hosts lost debutant Zaida James cheaply, but Matthews and Stafanie Taylor brought out their experience to shepherd the innings after a slow start. The duo added a 156-run stand off 153 balls for the second wicket.Matthews was the aggressor as she reached her half-century off 53 balls and picked up the pace after reaching the landmark. It did not take her long to breach the three-figure mark, reaching there in 96 balls, with the help of nine fours and two sixes. Taylor reached her fifty off 62 balls but fell soon after for 55 to legspinner Cara Murray.Taylor’s wicket produced an opening for Ireland, with West Indies losing 3 for 6 in ten balls, but Chinelle Henry came in and slammed an unbeaten 37-ball 53, her innings laced with seven fours as West Indies reached a formidable 297 for 6. Murray was Ireland’s most successful bowler, picking up three wickets.Ireland were circumspect in the chase, only managing 35 runs in the powerplay. Opener Gaby Lewis held the innings together, adding a 67-run stand with Orla Prendergast (37) for the second wicket and following it up with a 71-run partnership with captain Laura Delany (40).Matthews then struck with the ball, too, taking out Lewis for 83 before removing Delany. None of the other batters could put up much of a fight as Ireland finished on 239 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. Matthews finished with 3 for 53 in her ten overs, while Afy Fletcher and Qiana Joseph chipped in with two wickets apiece. Matthews was named Player of the Match for her all-round effort.

Melbourne Renegades have signed Australia offspinner Nathan Lyon for three years starting with BBL13. Lyon will shore up a Renegades spin attack that includes another off-season signing in legspinner Adam Zampa after he was traded from crosstown rivals Melbourne Stars. The move will bring Australia’s leading red and white-ball spinners together, although Australia’s Test schedule means they are unlikely to play together much in the 2023-24 season.”I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Melbourne Renegades,” Lyon said. “[Marvel Stadium is] a place where I enjoy bowling, it tends to spin a little bit. I’m looking forward to hopefully joining up with Zamps in a really good partnership and putting a show on for the Renegades fans.”I’ve got some really good friends who are part of the Melbourne Renegades, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to come down. There’s a good group of senior players there who I’ve played a lot of cricket with internationally and also domestically, then you look at the younger guys throughout the roster – it’s a pretty powerful squad in my eyes.”Renegades will be Lyon’s third team in the Big Bash League, having started with Adelaide Strikers before finding home in the pink of Sydney Sixers. With BBL seasons often overlapping Australia’s Test commitments, Lyon has only played 38 matches in the competition so far and picked up 44 wickets, and that will again likely be the case in the upcoming season due to series against Pakistan and West IndiesRelated

“It’s fantastic to have a player and person of Nathan’s calibre joining the Melbourne Renegades,” James Rosengarten, Melbourne Renegades general manager, said. “Nathan’s success over a sustained period at the highest level of the game speaks for itself, and he will be an incredible asset to our group with his skills and experience.”Being able to add two world-class spinners in Nathan and Adam to our squad for the next couple of years is a significant step in that process, one which we’re confident will help to set us up for success over the coming seasons.”Renegades start their BBL13 campaign on December 8 against Lyon’s former side, Sydney Sixers, before taking on Perth Scorchers at home on December 13.Lyon had his Ashes tour ended by a calf strain sustained at Lord’s, in his 100th consecutive Test, and is aiming to play the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales ahead of the Pakistan series which begins in mid-December.Renegades squad so far: Nic Maddinson (capt), Aaron Finch, Mackenzie Harvey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Kane Richardson, Tom Rogers, Jonathan Wells, Will Sutherland, Adam Zampa
