    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

'He’s in elite company' – Ex-USMNT stars Alexi Lalas and Herculez Gomez praise Christian Pulisic's world-class form for AC Milan

The two former USMNT standouts addressed Pulisic's impressive form with the Rossoneri, his role with the national team

Gomez emphasizes Pulisic's excellence despite Milan's issuesHe places American winger in "elite company" in Serie ALalas says Pulisic needs a better team around himGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

With Christian Pulisic reaching 50 Serie A goal contributions after scoring early in a 2-0 win over Venzia, the American became only the third player in the league to reach that figure over the last two seasons.

He follows Lautaro Martinez (54) and Ademola Lookman (50), placing the USMNT international in elite company. That prompted former USMNT star Herculez Gomez to assert that – despite the constant turnover of coaches, clubs and other internal issues – Pulisic has continued to show his best.

“It’s been constant turnover and turnover and turnover when it comes to the coaches and we’re just talking about the coaches," Gomez said on . “Chelsea had a black hole of players that would come in and out, and they were never a program that had some stability. When they had stability, Pulisic had productive years, and his issues weren’t being productive but staying healthy.

“It just wasn’t meant to be, and he goes to Milan, and you really have to tip your hat to a guy that many saw as a lost cause. He was an afterthought, and he’s gone from an afterthought to the face of AC Milan, a historic brand in world football. The problem is they’re ninth place in Serie A, it’s this version of Milan and that’s what people are going to hang over Pulisic.

He added, “He’s in elite company right there and you can see the level of competition he’s up against – and it’s not Rafa Leao, it’s not some other player, it’s Christian Pulisic. This is a testament to who Pulisic is and who he could be.”

Gomez said Pulisic is finally delivering on his potential.

“There was always flashes of that brilliance. 'Lockdown Christian Pulisic" how good he was? No fans in the stadium, there’s always an asterisk there. What about the Champions League run where they won the Champions League, the goal vs Real Madrid, there were always these flashes. The game against Liverpool, there was always flashes of what Christian Pulisic could be but he could never quite piece it together.

“He’s doing that now, he’s doing it with multiple coaches, he’s doing it with different teammates, and he’s taking the responsibility of being the leader in his own way. Milan fans and national teams fans in the U.S. will be very excited in Christian Pulisic, who's found a home in Milan.”

AdvertisementWHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

Alexi Lalas also touched upon the Rossoneri’s American star and questions whether the Pulisic's ceiling could be even higher with a stronger supporting cast at the Italian giants.

“Something that we've been talking about on a consistent basis is how good Christian Pulisic has been, albeit for a mediocre Milan. Milan right now, even with the win, still sits in ninth place. That is never good enough for Milan. So I think there are going to be changes. It'll be interesting to see,” Lalas said on his podcast. “And I don't see Christian Pulisic going anywhere, but it will be interesting to see what Christian Pulisic looks like come next year with an AC Milan that I think absolutely has to improve. And I do think that they will improve because of who they are. And does Christian Pulisic get lost in whatever that new shuffle is?

“Or does he rise even more and rise to the occasion, and now with even better players around him, potentially all potential? Does he become even bigger than he is right now? Obviously that's what we are all hoping for going forward, but he still continues to perform.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic's renaissance at AC Milan has become one of American soccer's biggest success stories. The USMNT star's transformation from Chelsea squad player to Milan cornerstone represents a significant career revival ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Not only that, he has contributed to 27 goals across all competitions this season with 20 of those coming in the Serie A alone.

Fewer touches than Sa: Wolves must axe 5/10 star after Anfield no-show

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to pull off a magnificent comeback at Anfield, losing 2-1 after going 2-0 down in the first half, but showing fight in the second half, grabbing one back through Matheus Cunha in the 67th minute, and fighting until the very end for that elusive equaliser.

Vitor Pereira’s side held their own against Arne Slot’s league leaders, holding 50% possession, taking 16 shots in the game, creating one “big chance” and generating 1.33 xG.

Sadly, the quality of Liverpool just squeezed by, taking fewer shots, but scoring two goals, with the prolific finishing of Mohamed Salah proving to be the decider once more.

Despite failing to complete the comeback, the performance of Cunha was absolutely excellent, not only scoring a brilliant goal, but contributing to all phases of play, and really being the driving force of Wolves from back to front.

Matheus Cunha's performance vs Liverpool

The 25-year-old has made 26 appearances for Wolves so far this season, scoring 13 goals, providing four assists and totalling 2,077 minutes played.

The Brazilian has played all over the place for his side, playing left-wing, right-wing, as an attacking midfielder and even through the middle as a centre-forward.

Cunha, as well as scoring the goal, took six shots in the game, attempted seven dribble attempts, completed three of them, took 84 touches, made one key pass, completed five of his eight long balls and won eight out of 12 ground duels.

Cunha was the heartbeat of everything Wolves did, dropping deep to link play and getting stuck in off the ball with his duels.

Whilst Cunha put in a brilliant display, one man in particular for Wolves did not, putting in a 5/10 display according to Birmingham’s World’s Charlie Haffenden.

Goncalo Guedes's performance in numbers

Goncalo Guedes was substituted at half-time against Liverpool, having struggled to make his mark in the game up against Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the first half.

The 28-year-old has struggled for form, especially in recent weeks, now going eight Premier League games without a goal contribution.

In the first half, Guedes failed to impact the game, managing fewer touches than Jose Sa – who finished on 33 – not taking a single shot and losing his only duel in the game. Of course, up against Van Dijk and Konate, it’s not going to be easy, but Wolves needed someone to make things stick and give them a chance on the break.

The man who came on in Guedes’s place, new signing Marshall Munetsi, generated 0.54 xG for himself with just 11 touches, managed two shots (one of which was a “big chance”) and won three out of four ground duels and one of his two aerial duels.

Munetsi could be the answer for Wolves going forward, offering more of a focal point through the middle, winning duels and allowing others such as Cunha to play off of him, perhaps even meaning Guedes can play in a more familiar wide position from the bench.

Whatever the case, the former Valencia man should find himself out of the starting lineup next time around.

Shardul Thakur traded from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders

He had finished IPL 2022 with 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 9.79, among his weakest bowling numbers since IPL 2017

Nagraj Gollapudi14-Nov-2022In a significant trade, Kolkata Knight Riders have acquired India allrounder Shardul Thakur from Delhi Capitals. The trade, which ESPNcricinfo has learned was finalised on Monday, is an all-cash deal but also involves Capitals getting uncapped Mumbai allrounder Aman Khan, who Knight Riders had bought at last year’s auction for INR 20 lakh (USD 26,000 approx).Thakur, who is currently in New Zealand as part of India’s ODI squad, was bought by Capitals at the 2022 IPL mega auction for INR 10.75 crore ($1.433 m approx.). With Indian bowling allrounders being a prized commodity, Thakur’s former IPL team Chennai Super Kings – along with Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings – too had attempted to buy him back, but Capitals did not retreat.Thakur had finished the IPL 2022 season with 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 9.79, among his weakest bowling numbers since he became an IPL regular in 2017. The retention window is scheduled to close on Tuesday at 5pm IST.Thakur is the third player whom Knight Riders have acquired via a trade, after getting the pair of Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Titans in another all-cash deal. One reason Capitals bid hard to get him last season was also because the IPL was played solely in Mumbai, Thakur’s hometown and the team he represents in domestic cricket. But with the 2023 IPL reverting to its original home-and-away format, Capitals’ thinktank would have weighed Thakur’s numbers at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, their own home ground in Delhi. In the half a dozen IPL matches he has played there, Thakur has picked just three wickets in 20 overs in which he has leaked 209 runs at an economy rate of 10.95. ÂŁ51m Arsenal target’s reps set to fly in for talks after agreeing contract

The representatives of a major Arsenal target are set to fly to London for further talks this week, having now reached an agreement on contract terms, according to a report.

Mikel Arteta planning for the summer

Although Liverpool eked out a 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday, Mikel Arteta’s side remain in a strong position to mount a title push as we approach a crucial stage of the season.

In truth, another second-place finish would be very tough to take, having narrowly missed out to Manchester City in the previous two seasons, but making up a seven-point gap could prove to be a tall order.

Arteta will be keen to ensure his side set the pace next season, rather than having to chase, and the manager is looking at adding the final touches to his squad, with bringing in a top striker believed to be of particular interest.

Arsenal now make contact for "composed" ÂŁ50m striker with 20 league goals

The Gunners have made the first move to sign a striker who is the top scorer in his league this season.

ByDominic Lund Feb 16, 2025

Midfield hasn’t been a problem position for Arsenal this season, with Declan Rice and Thomas Partey among their most consistent players in the Premier League, but Arteta is still keen to bring in additional depth in the middle of the park this summer.

There have been widespread reports indicating Martin Zubimendi’s move to the Emirates Stadium is more or less wrapped up, but there has now been a new update on the Gunners’ pursuit of the Real Sociedad man.

According to a report from Football Transfers, Arterta’s side have now struck an agreement with Zubimendi on a four-year contract, having held advanced talks over a summer transfer.

The midfielder’s representatives are set to fly to London for further talks this week, with the deal developing, although he still has reservations about the move due to non-football related issues, such as relocating to England.

Arsenal remain confident they will be able to get the deal over the line, however, with Arteta believed to be the driving force behind the move.

Zubimendi could be a statement signing for Arsenal

The central midfielder, who is expected to cost around ÂŁ51m, could help take Arteta’s midfield to the next level, given the displays he has put in for Real Sociedad for quite some time.

Former Gunner Kieran Tierney has lauded his ex-teammate as “world-class”, and he has been one of Sociedad’s best-performing players in La Liga this season, averaging a 6.91 WhoScored match rating.

Although the Spaniard is not much of a goal threat, he has impressed across a number of key defensive metrics over the past year.

ECB chair: Racism review will prove 'challenging' for English cricket

DCMS hearing set to go ahead despite suspension of parliamentary committee chair

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2022Richard Thompson, the ECB chair, has acknowledged that the scale of English cricket’s problem with discrimination is likely to prove “challenging for the sport” when the full findings of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) are published early next year. However, writing in the introduction to the ECB’s 12-month review into its game-wide Action Plan, Thompson insisted that the progress outlined in three of its own equity, diversity and inclusion reports demonstrates the sport’s clear aim to be “more open and inclusive”.”We know cricket at its best is a game for everyone, no matter what their background,” Thompson wrote. “We also know the difficult truth: that for too many people, that hasn’t always been the case. We know we are at the start of the journey and we will continue to work to reach a place where cricket is the most inclusive sport.”Among the findings in the board’s updates are a 32% increase in the number of women’s and girls’ teams across England and Wales in 2022, and a ÂŁ17.5million investment into more than 1600 facilities projects since 2021.In November 2021, the ECB adopted a 12-point Action Plan at a game-wide meeting at The Oval, in the wake of Azeem Rafiq’s explosive testimony at the DCMS select committee hearings in Westminster, at which the extent of English cricket’s institutional racism was laid bare.Rafiq and other figures within English cricket – including Yorkshire’s chairman, Lord Patel – are due to give further evidence to the DCMS committee next week, a process that is set to go ahead in the absence of the committee chair, Julian Knight, who has been suspended from the Conservative Party following an allegation of sexual assault.Responding in a statement on Twitter, Knight insisted that the withdrawal of the whip was “wrong and unjustified”, but added that he would be recusing himself from parliamentary business until the matter is resolved.

Ipswich must regret selling "incredible" ace who’s now worth 1100% more

For the majority of Ipswich Town supporters, getting into the Premier League full stop will be seen as an unbelievable achievement, even if the bleakness of relegation envelopes Portman Road very soon.

When Kieran McKenna took over, the Tractor Boys were marooned in League One, two divisions below the promised land.

Now, after two back-to-back promotions, Ipswich have the possibility of Premier League safety on the horizon, with the Suffolk club’s shrewdness in the transfer market another plus point to praise from their whirlwind rise.

Ipswich's best transfers under Kieran McKenna's reign

Before a ball was kicked to start McKenna’s first full campaign at the helm, the summer window saw Leif Davis enter the building, joining from Leeds for just ÂŁ1m.

That has gone down to be a jaw-droppingly good steal, with Davis now worth in the region of ÂŁ21m – as per Transfermarkt – off the back of picking up a bumper 38 assists from 115 Tractor Boys appearances.

Alongside Davis in the current relegation-threatened camp, the ÂŁ20m pick-up of Liam Delap also looks to have been a very successful buy, even if it did require the newly promoted side to flex their muscles more than their modest League One dealings.

Indeed, Delap is now being touted to leave Portman Road for double his ÂŁ20m fee amidst interest from Chelsea, with the ex-Manchester City ace up to ten strikes this term in the league, despite his lowly side regularly struggling to keep their heads above water.

But, it’s not always so rosy at Ipswich when it comes to incomings and outgoings working out, with the Suffolk outfit made to rue letting a homegrown talent go for a mere ÂŁ1.5m back in 2021.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Former Ipswich star is star now worth 1100% more

Ipswich will surely be planning ahead for this coming summer already as they assess who can make the team stronger. This, of course, will be dependent on whether they’re still battling it out in the top-flight or they’re set for a promotion journey once more.

For either of these scenarios, having ex-academy graduate Flynn Downes back at their disposal would have surely helped, with McKenna’s men looking light in this position past this season ending owing to both Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste being temporary loanees.

This is where Downes could help in the here and now, with the 26-year-old never really sparking into life at Portman Road during the fledging stages of his career, before going on to prove himself away from his boyhood employers.

For both Southampton and Swansea City, Downes would solidify himself as a solid and assured option in the frantic second tier, with the Welsh side selling him for way more than the ÂŁ1.5m they paid for the ex-Ipswich man at ÂŁ12m to West Ham United.

Whilst this switch up to the top-flight didn’t go so smoothly, the Hammers still managed to offload Downes for around the ÂŁ18m ballpark to Southampton, which represents a 1100% increase from his days as a ÂŁ1.5m player in Wales, with the 5 foot 8 midfielder even steering the South Coast side to promotion glory come the end of the 2023/24 season.

His efforts that campaign – which saw him average a calm and cool 93% pass accuracy per league contest – backed up then Saints boss Russell Martin’s claims that the 26-year-old is “incredible”, with Ipswich left to wonder what could have been if they hadn’t signed off on that Swans deal.

With the Suffolk side even reportedly looking at a late deal to bring Downes back to Portman Road deep into the winter window owing to a fall-out at St. Mary’s, there must be a lingering pain still that they did allow him to exit before he fully blossomed.

Jon Lewis on England success in West Indies: 'There's been a real shift in the group'

Jon Lewis believes England’s clean sweep of their tour of the West Indies, on which they won eight internationals out of eight, showcased the team’s new “attacking mindset” – but said the real test would come when they are asked to stick to their approach in high-pressure moments, such as at the forthcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.Lewis, who took over as head coach last month, spoke before his first assignment about encouraging a more positive style of play, and was rewarded with a series of emphatic displays, as England won the ODI series 3-0 followed by a 5-0 result in the T20Is.They began with a bang, racking up 307 for 7 in the first ODI in Antigua, followed by scores of 260 and 256 – their three highest ODI totals in the Caribbean. They also made three of their four highest T20I scores in region, and finished the tour by dismissing West Indies for 43 – their lowest total in T20Is – on the way to an eight-wicket win completed inside the powerplay.Related

“The thing I’ve been most pleased about is the way the girls have attacked their cricket and the mindset they’ve tried to adapt to,” Lewis said. “I’ve talked to a lot of them over the course of the tour and you can hear loud and clear the way they’re thinking and the way they’re trying to go about their business. That’s the most pleasing thing for me, the shift that they’ve made in terms of how they’ve tried to approach cricket, in terms of putting bowlers under pressure and taking wickets at every opportunity and also working really hard in the field.”I think regardless of the actual results in the games, the way that we’ve been able to attack our cricket and try and play the way that we want to play as a group has been really, really pleasing.”England were rarely pushed during the tour, with victories by 16 and 17 runs in the second and third T20Is respectively the closest West Indies came to halting their momentum, and Lewis was able to rotate his players in a bid to find out more about them just six weeks out from the World Cup.”Whilst the challenge of this tour hasn’t been as great as we would have probably liked, there’s still been some pressure moments in games where people stood up and took responsibility to do the job. There’s obviously greater challenges ahead of us. There’s some really good teams out there in women’s cricket. It’ll be exciting to see how they how they cope with those pressures.”I said I was more than happy to lose games on this tour as long as we shifted the way we wanted to play. And that’s the thing I’m most pleased about, the way that we’ve approached cricket, the attacking mindset they’ve taken into the games. I feel like it’s a real shift from what I’ve watched in the past and the times I think they’ve played safe. But there’s been a real shift in the in the group in the way they’re talking and the way they’re trying to grow their game.”With England expected to name their World Cup squad next month, there were impressive performances from the likes of Charlie Dean – whose 18 wickets across formats made her the most-successful bowled on tour – and Lauren Bell. Injuries to Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp were less welcome, but Lewis suggested that Capsey could still return from a broken collarbone in time to be selected.”I’m getting some really positive noises actually, which is a bit of a surprise to me once I’d heard what she’d done,” he said. “I didn’t realise that those injuries could heal as quickly as they can. So there’s some really positive noises coming out but she’s still got quite a way to go to make sure that she’s going to be fit and available for a World Cup. I think probably the hardest thing for her will be when she starts hitting the ground again, diving. So that’s probably just building her confidence in the work that’s been done on her collarbone. But as far as I know, from all the information I’ve got from the medical staff, she’s progressing really well.”As for England’s chances of pushing Australia, winners of the last three global limited-overs tournaments in women’s cricket, in South Africa in February, Lewis suggested that the group needed to stand up in “close moments” if they were going to achieve the success that has eluded them since the 2017 World Cup.”I would say that the biggest challenge ahead of us is maintaining our confidence and belief in the way we’re going to play,” he said. “So when the pressure ramps up, when you get bigger games, you are put under more pressure by the opposition – then the ability to hold on to the belief and trust that the way that we’re trying to play our cricket will work. So that’s I think our biggest challenge, but that will only come with time, and probably wins and losses. Just opportunities to put themselves under more pressure in moments and games, and show how talented they actually are.”It’s really it’s interesting to think about how to judge this tour. Did West Indies play like they did because of how we played or were West Indies in that position prior to the tour anyway. What part did we play on the way West Indies played? You would like to think the pressure that we put on them made them worse. This team’s done stuff in the West Indies that no other England team has done, broken a lot of records while they’ve been out here. There’s [been] contributions from individuals that they haven’t done before. So it’s whether or not we can we can just maintain that belief and confidence in in how we want to go about business.”

He’s worth more than Katic: Rangers hit the jackpot on "unbelievable" star

Glasgow Rangers were in the market to sign a new central defender in the recent January transfer window to bolster their depth in that position.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen eyed up a player in that role, due to injuries to the likes of John Souttar, Dujon Sterling, and Leon Balogun, and eventually brought in Rafael Fernandes on loan from Lille.

He has been an unused substitute three times and his only start so far came in the embarrassing 1-0 defeat to second tier outfit Queen’s Park in the SFA Cup.

Another player who was linked with a move to Ibrox in the January window was former Rangers defender Nikola Katic, who went on to sign for Plymouth Argyle instead.

Niko Katic's current market value

The Bosnia international joined the Championship team on loan from FC Zurich and is currently valued at just €1.5m (£1.2m) by Transfermarkt.

Despite his unimpressive market value, Katic, who made 59 appearances for Rangers, has caught the eye with some impressive performances for the Pilgrims.

The former Gers titan made a whopping 17 clearances and won five of his six duels in a historic 1-0 win over Premier League giants Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Katic has also won 65% of his duels across five appearances in the Championship for Plymouth, showing that he has hit the ground running as a dominant defender.

Rangers, however, have already hit the jackpot on their own dominant, 28-year-old, centre-back in the form of Scotland international John Souttar.

Rangers hit the jackpot with John Souttar

The Light Blues signed the Scottish defender on a free transfer from Hearts in the summer of 2022, and he was valued at ÂŁ1.2m by Transfermarkt at the time of that move.

Market Movers

Souttar endured a frustrating debut campaign at Ibrox as he missed 50 games for club and country with an ankle injury, which caused his value to drop to ÂŁ1m. He did not allow that setback to put him down, however, and has bounced back to become an incredibly valuable member of the squad.

As you can see in the table above, his value has since soared by millions to the point where he is now worth more than three times as much as Katic, who is the same age as the Rangers star.

In the Scottish Premiership this season, Souttar has started 16 games for the Gers and caught the eye with his dominant defensive work – winning 69% of his ground duels and 63% of his aerial battles.

The 28-year-old colossus, who was hailed as “unbelievable” by international teammate Andy Robertson, has also won a staggering 87% of his duels across seven appearances in the Europa League so far this term.

This shows that Souttar has been a rock at the heart of the Rangers defence, rarely allowing opposition players to get the better of him, which is why the club hit the jackpot when they signed him back in 2022.
