Fast-bowling could be worry for Pakistan, England happy to continue experimenting

Big picture The shapeshifting nature of a seven-match T20I series makes it difficult to capture the big picture in words that age well, so the first rule of doing this is accepting that.England, after all, have a seemingly bottomless pit of explosive T20 cricketers, and as Harry Brook and Will Jacks – who debuted on Friday – showed in the series, they’re nowhere near scraping the bottom of that barrel. Pakistan, who will be playing their 200th T20I, have the most consistent opening pair in the world, and a middle order that has so far been unable to live up to its vast potential. We all know this. We knew it three games ago, and we know some combination of these events will continue to define the final four games of this series, because that’s what you get with Pakistan and England. We didn’t need three T20Is on the best batting pitch in the world to figure that out.Related

But that doesn’t mean there’s no value to be gained from this glut of games. Pakistan have seen the debates that are both furious in their intensity and tiresome in their repetitiveness around the top and middle order rage on, but that has shielded the bowlers from the scrutiny they deserve after two especially uninspiring performances. Shadab Khan’s return to fitness cannot come soon enough, with Usman Qadir having comprehensively failed to take the chances that have come his way. It might have been forgotten in the blur of boundaries that followed, but England hadn’t hit a six in the first half of the innings until Qadir landed a half-volley right in new batter Brook’s hitting arc and found himself dispatched over his head. The seamers, too, have repeatedly failed to find their lines and lengths at crucial points in overs, and evidence of match-up bowling has been scarce. The short-ball at pace was persisted with despite Brook’s prolific ability on the pull and behind the wicket, while rigidity with bowlers’ lines frequently allowed him to back away and open up cover, where deep protection often didn’t exist. The fielding hasn’t helped either, and in the ferocity of the culture war around batting intent, it escapes notice that the best way to limit the need for extreme risk-taking is by making sure you don’t need to chase down any more than necessary.England have problems, too, but of a much different kind. They have been the side happier to treat these games as experiments, tinkering around with both the batting and the bowling, even opting to set a total in one game, a modern T20 anathema. Alex Hales has shone on his England return, and Ben Duckett, Brook and Jacks have all enjoyed impressive starts to the series. Adil Rashid’s landed them with almost metronomic consistency, making him the most useful spinner from either side. And if you thought Luke Wood was a shot in England’s arm, what Mark Wood did on his return from injury on Friday – racking up a top speed in excess of 97 mph – becomes incomprehensible. All of this means there’s little England can complain about so far this tour.Form guide Pakistan: LWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlight When the opposition amasses huge scores for fun, don’t expect to get any credit as a bowler. Especially one who doesn’t pick up many wickets. And yet, Mohammad Nawaz, having conceded 94 in three games for just one wicket, is arguably Pakistan’s best T20 bowler. It is a selfless role of sorts he plays, operating as a left-arm spinner with only pace and line variations to rely on. He doesn’t possess the ability to turn it big, but it’s uncanny how often a slight slowing of an England innings tempo coincides with Nawaz’s introduction. He hasn’t been afraid to take on an over or two in the powerplay, either, and against an England side that’s scored 580 runs in just under 60 overs, Nawaz has found a way to concede just 7.83 in his dozen. In an England batting line-up so chock-full of natural power-hitters, Dawid Malan can stick out. He might have been the number one ranked T20I player fairly recently, but the big-hitting that comes so effortlessly to his team-mates is obviously not his forte in the same manner. Despite impressing as opener in the Hundred, it has been a tricky start to the series for him, his penchant for starting slowly offering Pakistan’s bowlers much-needed respite. The slow, low conditions haven’t helped – and, of course, won’t be a feature of surfaces in Australia at the upcoming T20 World Cup. But with his team-mates hitting sixes for fun, Malan might feel it’s about time he showed why he belongs in this glittering batting line-up.Pitch and conditionsEvening conditions have cooled down slightly in Karachi, though it remains fairly humid. Babar is 97 away from 3,000 T20I career runs. Only four batters – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Martin Guptill and Paul Stirling have reached that mark. Malan hasn’t enjoyed playing against Pakistan. In nine T20Is, he averages 18.87 against them, down from a career average of 37.05, and strikes at 106.33, while his career strike rate is 137.61. Ward's determination and Siddle's late strikes lift Tasmania

Wes Agar took four wickets to ensure the home side stayed in the game

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2022Pace bowler Wes Agar took four wickets as South Australia edged ahead Tasmania at the midpoint of their Sheffield Shield match. At stumps on day two, the Redbacks are 2 for 21 in their second innings, a lead of three runs, at Adelaide Oval.Tim Paine took a superb catch in SA’s second innings to remove Henry Hunt, diving full-stretch, low to his right, in front of first slip. And he pouched a regulation edge two balls later from nightwatchman Harry Conway, who inexplicably launched an expansive drive just five minutes before stumps to give Peter Siddle a second victim. But earlier Paine scored only 2 as Tasmania’s batters slipped from an ominous position of 2 for 103. He was caught at short-leg from the bowling of SA’s debutant allrounder Ben Manenti.Opener Tim Ward top-scored with 82 and Beau Webster made 46 but Tasmania surrendered momentum as Agar claimed 4 for 34 from 19 overs. Offspinner Manenti, Conway and Jordan Buckingham also took multiple wickets for SA.Paine made 6 and an unbeaten 29 in Tasmania’s Shield opener – his comeback to first-class cricket after standing down as Australia’s Test captain last November. In Monday’s middle session, he was among three Tasmanian wickets to fall with Ward (219 balls, nine fours) and Jordan Silk. Webster struck seven fours in his 81-ball knock but the Tasmanian tail couldn’t wag.

Tottenham insider shares Postecoglou sack theory with timeline estimated

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is facing repeated calls for his dismissal amid a woeful 2024/2025 campaign, with a well-connected former Spurs scout now sharing when he believes the 59-year-old will be shown his P45.

Postecoglou under more Tottenham pressure after Aston Villa defeat

The problems at Spurs are well-documented, and have been around long before they crashed out of the FA Cup fourth round to Aston Villa last weekend.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 11, 2025

Postecoglou is now relying solely on his side’s participation in the Europa League to end Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a major trophy, but that barely scratches the surface when it comes to describing the Lilywhites’ lacklustre season.

The north Londoners sit 14th in the Premier League table, closer to relegation than European qualification, with Postecoglou’s squad stretched to the absolute bare bones after a plethora of debilitating injuries to key first-team players over the last few months.

A large portion of Spurs supporters were eager to see the return of open, attacking and front-foot football after the pragmatic years of José Mourinho and Antonio Conte, but a lot of the criticism aimed Postecoglou’s way has centered around the perceived lack of a plan B approach.

Luckily for the ex-Celtic boss, Tottenham expect to have a host of first-teamers back fairly soon, including Guglielmo Vicario, left-back Destiny Udogie, midfielder James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert.

These vital re-introductions could prove pivotal to Postecoglou’s job status, especially with Tottenham doing due-diligence on potential new managers behind-the-scenes.

Insider shares Ange Postecoglou sack theory at Tottenham

Speaking to Football Insider, former Lilywhites scout Mick Brown, who is said to remain very well-connected at his ex-employers, has shared his belief about when Spurs could decide to sack Postecoglou – and returning players will greatly determine the timeline.

They’re putting their eggs in one basket at the moment,” he said. “The thinking is very much ‘we’ll be alright when we get our injured players back’.

“But given the length of time these players have been out of the game, they’ve got to get back up to match fitness, can they do that while still starting games? Then, if they get them all back, and they’re still losing games, what happens then?

“The pressure will only get more intense, and I think that’s when he’ll be sacked, if players come back from injuries and there isn’t an immediate turnaround in form. That’s what they’re expecting and hoping for – players to come back and results to improve.

“If it doesn’t happen, the blame will be placed on the manager. They’ve put so much emphasis on these injured players, so they’re willing to stick with him until he gets them back into the team.

“But if they come back and things don’t go well, it doesn’t bode well for Postecoglou’s position.”

'Historic fall from grace' – USMNT icon Alexi Lalas knocks LA Galaxy coach Greg Vanney for winless team's 'unacceptable' MLS form

    WHAT HAPPENED

In a complete reversal from last year, LA Galaxy – defending MLS Cup winners – are winless in their fist nine matches of the 2025 season, and sit dead last in the Western Conference standings. Former USMNT star and MLS defender Alexi Lalas joined the chorus of those critical of the team and coach Greg Vanney.

  • WHAT LALAS SAID

“Obviously Riqui Puig is out long term, but at some point the excuses for Greg Vanney have to fall on deaf ears,” Lalas said on his podcast, the State of the Union. “I mean, you're looking at a historic fall from grace when it comes to Major League Soccer and your MLS Cup champions… That is not acceptable in general from a Galaxy team, and it's certainly not acceptable mere months after winning MLS Cup.

"And I understand the way that MLS is structured. They had to make decisions and they kind of went all in and obviously it translated into a a result."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The situation in Los Angeles highlights the ongoing challenge for MLS champions to maintain success in a league specifically designed to prevent dynasties. While roster turnover and targeted allocation money constraints affect all teams, historically successful franchises like the Galaxy face heightened scrutiny. However, few reigning champions have struggled as badly as the LA Galaxy, which has only added to the pressure surrounding the team.

All-round Royals script thumping win over Sharks to clinch inaugural PJL

Bahawalpur Royals carved their name on the inaugural Pakistan Junior League (PJL) trophy by beating Gwadar Sharks by 86 runs in the final, in Lahore on Friday. Shawaiz Irfan smashed 79 off just 32 deliveries and Tayyab Arif hit a quick fifty to set the platform for an imposing total of 225. In the chase, Sharks were bowled out for 139, thanks to Mohammad Zeeshan and Nangeyalia Kharote’ three wicket-hauls.Sharks won the toss and elected to bowl, but the decision backfired. The damage inflicted by Irfan, Arif, Basit Ali and Kharote was massive for Sharks. While Arif made a 34-ball 56, Kharote remained unbeaten on 47 off 30 balls to help the Imran Tahir-mentored side post the highest total of the season. The Lahore-born Shawaiz, who was promoted up the batting order, was crowned Player of the Match after he thumped the fastest half-century of the tournament. His innings had seven fours and six sixes. His glovework has also been impressive throughout the PJL, drawing praise from Rashid Latif as well.Sharks never got a sniff while bowling as Arif and Afghanistani southpaw Kharote teed off and added 87 runs for the third wicket. Arif scored his first fifty of the PJL and his innings was laced with seven fours and one six, while Kharote hammered two sixes and three fours in his unbeaten knock.Sharks finished the group stage at the top of the table and beat Royals in the Qualifier 1 but on Friday, they were outclassed in all departments. Royals brought their A game in the all-important final and went in with an attacking mindset right from the start. In reply, Sharks did manage a flying start in the powerplay and got to 103 for 4 in the first ten overs, but the innings nosedived after the dismissal of their captain Shamyl Hussain, who notched up 67 off 34 balls. In the end, the team was skittled for 139 in under 16 overs.Their innings was a story of two halves as Sharks were meeting the asking rate in the first ten overs with Hussain leading the charge. But the moment Zeeshan was introduced into the attack, he removed Hussain and the floodgates were opened. Thereon, the wickets fell at regular intervals as the spinners applied the choke and the equation became tougher with each passing over.Sharks’ overseas signing Luc Martin Benkenstein has been in good nick in this competition and even guided his side to the doorstep of victory with a well-crafted 71 in Qualifier 1, but he couldn’t get going in the final and holed out to long-on off Sajjad Ali’s bowling. Another lynchpin of Sharks’ batting line-up Mohammad Zulfikal was snared by Kharote early on. Eventually, Sharks lost their last seven wickets for 43 runs.Sharks will rue the missed opportunities, overthrows and losing their composure when Arif and Shawaiz went berserk with the bat.Basit Ali, who hails from a remote city of Pakistan – Dera Murad Jamali – finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer with 379 runs at a strike rate of 150.39. He struck one century and two half-centuries in the PJL and a crucial 35 in the final. Zeeshan ended the tournament as highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps at an economy of 7.25 from eight matches.

Everton now working on £21m deal to sign "special" star before Liverpool

As the Friedkin Group look to make their mark once again, Everton are reportedly already working on a £21m deal to sign an attacking talent ahead of Merseyside rivals Liverpool this summer.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees have certainly had more reason to be positive since the return of David Moyes, having steered clear of the relegation zone and onto likely safety in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Friedkin haven’t exactly had a bad start away from the action – welcoming Carlos Alcaraz on loan from Flamengo in what should hand Moyes an exciting player in central midfield.

Carlos Alcaraz for Flamengo.

Whilst defeat in the FA Cup did bring their momentum to a frustrating halt, the Toffees have the perfect chance to bounce back when they host the final ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday. It’s there that they’ll have the chance to prevent rivals Liverpool from going as many as nine points clear in the Premier League title race – at which point it would undeniably be theirs to lose.

It’s not just on the pitch that those at Goodison Park could stand in the way of the Reds, however. According to reports in Spain, Everton are already working on a deal to sign Rayan Cherki ahead of Liverpool this summer in a transfer that would be worth €25m (£21m). Reportedly in pole position, the Toffees look set to swoop in on a player who has long been linked with their rivals.

His value has risen £35m: Everton will rue selling "monster" Ndiaye upgrade

This former Everton talent has turned into a superstar of a player.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 11, 2025

The young attacking midfielder, who can also play on both the right and left-hand side of a front three, looks destined to leave Lyon even after he was denied the chance to do so and join Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.

Given Lyon’s desperate financial situation, they won’t be able to remain firm forever and will likely have no choice but to sell if the likes of Everton come calling. With Liverpool also reportedly interested, meanwhile, the French club could quickly commence quite the race between the two Merseyside clubs.

"Special" Cherki would ignite Everton's attack

Whilst Moyes has so far managed to get an electric tune out of what was a choir-like attack under Sean Dyche, there’s no denying that he still needs fresh faces within his frontline. And that’s where Cherki should come in.

The 21-year-old has been one of the most highly-praised talents in European football at times this season, including from Ben Mattinson. The analyst went as far as to say that the Lyon man is a “special creator” who is “creative from all areas of the pitch” last month.

The stats certainly only add credit to that verdict too. In a struggling Lyon side, Cherki has been involved in 17 goals in all competitions so far this season – finding the back of the net six times himself and creating another 11 goals.

The Frenchman looks destined for the top, which could yet feature a summer switch to the Premier League and Everton.

Raphinha repeat: Leeds lining up move for a star who was once worth £59m

Leeds United have the chance to move four points clear at the top of the Championship table this evening as they prepare to take on Burnley at Turf Moor.

Sheffield United lost 3-0 to Hull City on Friday and Sunderland were held to a 2-2 draw by Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, which has opened the door for the Whites to extend their lead with a win over the Clarets, who can move level on points with the Whites if they secure the victory.

Daniel Farke will be hoping that his side are as effective and solid as they were in their last outing in the second tier, beating Norwich City 2-0 at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

It is a huge clash at the top of the Championship table and one that could set Leeds well on their way to securing automatic promotion up to the Premier League.

A loss, however, could create panic, given that Burnley would move level on points with them, and there could be calls for action in the January transfer window ahead of next week’s deadline, given that the Clarets, Sunderland, and Sheffield United have all been busy.

Irrespective of what happens tonight, the West Yorkshire outfit are reportedly looking at adding a midfielder to their playing squad before the deadline.

Leeds eyeing Brazilian midfielder

According to the printed edition of The Sunday Mirror (26/01/2025), as relayed by The Star, Leeds are one of a number of teams lining up a swoop to sign Botofogo midfielder Danilo Barbosa.

The report claims that fellow Championship promotion hopefuls Sheffield United and Premier League side Everton are also in the running to sign the 28-year-old star before the end of the January transfer window.

It states that Botofogo are looking to cash in on the Brazilian ace in the coming days to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the year, as his contract is due to expire at the end of December, which means that he would be free to sign a pre-contract in the upcoming summer window.

The Sunday Mirror adds that the Serie A team would be willing to cash in on the former Nice titan for a fee of £2m, which could make him a bargain addition for Leeds, the Blades, or the Toffees ahead of the second half of the season.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not any of the three interested clubs are prepared to move in with a firm offer for his services before the end of the current window, or if they will wait to sign him for nothing at the start of next year.

Transfer Focus

Leeds could, though, enjoy a Raphinha repeat with Barbosa, by signing another Brazilian who has excelled in Ligue 1 in the past, as they did with the left-footed magician.

Leeds United's Raphinha masterclass

In the summer of 2020, Victor Orta swooped to sign the winger from French side Rennes for a reported fee of £17m to bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Raphinha started his career in Brazil, with Avai FC, before a spell in Portugal with Vitoria Guimaraes and Sporting, which led to his move to Rennes in Ligue 1.

Former Leeds forward Raphinha.

During his time in France, the forward racked up eight goals and seven assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, and that convinced the Whites to swoop in to secure his services.

Raphinha was, then, able to translate his form in Ligue 1 over to the Premier League with Leeds, as he scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists in 67 outings across his two seasons in West Yorkshire.

As you can see in the clips above, the Brazil international was capable of the sublime in the Premier League and won many points for the Whites with his fantastic qualities at the top end of the pitch.

Barcelona then swooped in to sign him for a reported fee of £55m in the summer of 2022, which meant that Leeds made a gigantic profit on the winger after just two years of service at Elland Road – making the initial £17m deal a masterclass from Orta.

Why Danilo Barbosa could be a Raphinha repeat

The 49ers could come close to repeating the masterclass that the club played with Raphinha by signing Danilo Barbosa for £2m from Botofogo this month, because he is another Brazilian who could come in having already impressed in Ligue 1.

Unlike the current Barcelona superstar, the 28-year-old brute would come in as an experienced player without much potential for a sell-on and plays in defensive positions, as a midfielder or as a centre-back, rather than on the wing.

However, his form for Botafogo in 2024 and his previous form in Ligue 1 for Nice, where Raphinha also shined, suggests that he could come in to make an immediate impact – as the forward did.

Barbosa made 25 appearances in the Serie A in 2024 and caught the eye with 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game, without making a single error that led to a shot or goal for the opposition, to go along with a duel success rate of 55%, which shows that is a reliable holding midfielder who is strong in physical battles.

The Brazilian ace, who reportedly had a release clause of €70m (£59m) at Nice after his move from Portuguese side Braga, impressed as a centre-back in the 2019/20 campaign in France.

As you can see in the table above, Barbosa excelled against his positional peers in the French top-flight that term, particularly at playing out from the back, which would be crucial in a Farke team that dominates the ball.

These statistics suggest that he has the potential to be a good fit for the German’s style of play as a centre-back option, whilst his current form for Botofogo in midfield shows that he still has the defensive quality to operate effectively in the middle of the park as well.

Therefore, Barbosa, who made three interceptions and one block against Raphinha in a 1-1 draw between Nice and Rennes in 2020, could be the second Brazilian to arrive at Elland Road via Ligue 1 to become a successful signing for the Whites.

Leeds can forget Buendia with late swoop for "incredible" 15-goal star

Leeds could miss out on a deal to sign Emiliano Buendia from Aston Villa.

ByDan Emery Jan 27, 2025

He was once valued at £59m, given his release clause at Nice, which is even more than Barcelona paid for Raphinha, but Leeds now have the chance to land the 28-year-old for just £2m, which could end up being a bargain for the club this month.
