Garnacho expressed his frustration at being substituted in the 43rd minute in the club's 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in the midweek. Amorim decided to replace the Argentine winger with full-back Noussair Mazraoui following Patrick Dorgu's red card. After the substitution, the 20-year-old headed straight down the tunnel and after the break he did not come out of the dressing room and sit alongside his team-mates in the dugout.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Following his poor attitude on the field, Amorim has already revealed Garnacho will pay for dinner for the Manchester United. The winger has also been left out of the starting lineup for their fifth round FA Cup clash against Fulham on Sunday, but his manager confirmed his decision was due to the fact the youngster is carrying a physical issue/

  • WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Speaking to MUTV ahead of kick-off, the Portuguese coach said: "Chris [Eriksen] is working really well and Garna has a knock. We cannot risk players at this moment, but because this is a cup game and it is decided today, we have Garnacho on the bench if we need him."

Amorim added: "Garnacho had an issue last game so we are using Eriksen because he is fit. We have Garnacho on the bench if we need him because it is a game that decides if we go into the next stage.

"We are going to try to use the characteristics of Chris, which is quite different from Garnacho. The substitution (last game) was clear, he paid for the dinner and he's ready to go. He's working really well so I hope he continues to have an impact if we need it in the game."

Shamim 52 trumps Tamim 73* as Mrittunjoy last over clinches cliffhanger for Chattogram

Minister Group Dhaka needed nine to win off the last over, with set batter Tamim Iqbal in the middle, but eventually lost by three runs

Shamim Hossain takes off for a run•Chattogram Challengers

How the match played outMrittunjoy Chowdhury brought back Chattogram Challengers out of the dead with a superb final over that helped clinch a three-run win over Minister Group Dhaka. It was the first thriller of the BPL this season, particularly after several one-sided games in the competition in the past week.To defend eight runs in the last over, the left-arm quick Mrittunjoy first removed Qais Ahmed off the first ball. He then bowled two dot balls to Mohammad Naim, before the batter got off strike. Tamim Iqbal, who was the set batter at the other end, could only muster a bye next ball, finishing on an unbeaten 73 and leaving Naim to hit a six off the last ball.Mrittunjoy bowled a high full-toss this time, which Naim hit back to him. But it was a no-ball, which handed Dhaka another chance. But Naim, struggling throughout the tournament, couldn’t do much in the final ball. Mrittunjoy bowled another fast full delivery, which only returned a single down the ground. The win brought Chattogram back in contention for the playoffs spots as they replaced Dhaka in fourth place with eight points. Chattogram, who got into the game with their third captain in Afif Hossain, banked on the 57 runs they added in the last five overs to get them to 148 for 6 in 20 overs.Related

Mehidy Hasan Miraz captaincy row – 'Both player and franchise admit they acted unreasonably'

Big hitShamim Hossain made his maiden BPL fifty, getting most of his runs on the on-side, including a six over midwicket off Ebadot Hossain. He also struck five fours in his 37-ball knock. He added 58 runs for the sixth wicket with Benny Howell, who struck two sixes in his unbeaten 19-ball 24.The Shamim-Howell combination also accounted for Mahmudullah’s catch in the 15th over of Dhaka’s chase. Mahmudullah slog-swept Mehidy Hasan Miraz, only for Shamim to intercept the ball in the deep-midwicket boundary. Realising that he would lose his balance and fall over the rope, he flicked the ball to Howell who completed the catch. The catch broke the 71-run fourth wicket stand between Tamim and Mahmudullah, after Dhaka had slipped to 21 for 3 in the fifth over. Mahmudullah played the support act as Tamim struck the ball cleanly over the covers, hitting Jacks for a six and Miraz for two fours through the region.Tamim kept the Dhaka chase on track even after Mahmudullah got out, adding 43 runs in 4.1 overs with Shuvagata Hom. Tamim struck his sixth four off the last ball of Shoriful Islam’s 19th over, which left Qais on strike, but with nine to win, Dhaka couldn’t finish the game they way they desired.Mrittunjoy, meanwhile, crossed another milestone in this ever-improving BPL campaign. He started the tournament with a hat-trick against Sylhet Sunrisers before taking a four-wicket haul against Fortune Barishal.Big missA big worry would be Naim’s form throughout this BPL season. This short innings of two runs off five balls may not reflect his overall form but he has truly struggled, resulting in him being sent to bat at No. 8 in this game. He has so far scored just 43 runs at an average of 8.60. It must be a cause of concern for the Bangladesh selectors going into the Afghanistan series later this month.

Newcastle receive £8m bid for "incredible" £60k-p/w ace who lost his place

As the January transfer window approaches, Newcastle United have already reportedly received a bid to sell one of Eddie Howe’s attacking players who’s struggled for game time in the current campaign.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies will be desperate to enjoy a busy 2025 on the transfer front after failing miserably on the recruitment front during the summer. Recent reports suggest that Paul Mitchell is already lining up several targets too, with Bryan Mbeumo and even long-term Chelsea target Victor Osimhen among those mentioned. When 2025 arrives, however, Newcastle could be forced to deal with departures alongside incoming reinforcements.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Among those who could leave is Alexander Isak following recent rumours that contract talks between the Swede and Newcastle have reached a worrying standstill, opening the door to the likes of Arsenal. And whilst those rumours persist, Isak has been proving exactly why he deserves a place at the very top.

If rumours quickly become fact then Newcastle’s star striker will be heading for the exit door to potentially join another one of Howe’s attacking options. According to Soy del Millo, River Plate have submitted a bid worth €10m (£8m) to sign Miguel Almiron, only for Newcastle to reject that offer ahead of the winter window, with their price tag reportedly standing between €12-15m (£10-13m).

Unlike Isak, Almiron is no longer a key man under Howe after losing his place to the likes of Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordan to create major question marks over his St James’ Park future.

Amid profit and sustainability concerns, £60,000-a-week Almiron remains a player that Newcastle would be wise to move as they have seemingly been attempting to do for the last six months. For now, however, they’re still waiting for the right offer to come their way.

"Incredible" Almiron needs Newcastle departure

Playing just 103 minutes of Premier League action and making just seven appearances in all competitions so far this season, it seems clearer than ever that Almiron must head for the St James’ Park exit door when 2025 arrives. For all parties involved, a departure would make perfect sense, especially if Newcastle finally receive their £10m+ asking price.

Just what Almiron’s Newcastle legacy is remains difficult to say. He shocked the Premier League and most of all Jack Grealish when he hit blistering form in the 2022/23 campaign but was back to his frustrating subdued nature just one campaign later. Now 30 years old, the winger should take his leave and with it moments to remember such as last season’s strike on the way to victory over Paris Saint-Germain last season.

Howe is among those to have praised Almiron during his time in Tyneside, saying via Newcastle World back in August: “We’ll work with Miggy to try and get his game to the level it was two years ago where he was absolutely incredible for us.

“His commitment, attitude and professionalism is second to none, he is truly a magnificent person and professional. He is an important player for us and we don’t underestimate his qualities.”

Former Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh dies aged 74

Australian cricket great Rod Marsh has died, aged 74, in an Adelaide hospital, where he had been admitted last week after suffering a heart attack in Queensland.A combative wicketkeeper-batter, Marsh played 96 Test matches for Australia between 1970 and 1984 and 92 ODIs. On retirement, he held Test cricket’s then world record for most wicketkeeping dismissals, 355. It included the iconic “c Marsh b Lillee” entry in a scorebook what remains a record 95 times in Test cricket, during a iconic pairing with fast bowler Dennis Lillee.Marsh was also an aggressive left-handed batter who was the first Australian wicketkeeper to score a Test century. He made three Test centuries in his career, which was interrupted for two years by World Series Cricket. While Marsh’s on-field exploits were legendary, he was also a deep thinker of the game and was renowned around the world as a coach and talent-spotter. Marsh headed Cricket Australia’s academy before filling the same role in England, and was the first head of an ICC world coaching academy in Dubai. He also served as commentator and became Australia’s chairman of selectors in 2014, a position he held for two years.Australia’s Test players are expected to wear black arm-bands when the first Test against Pakistan starts later Friday in Rawalpindi, as a mark of respect for Marsh.”Rod was a colossal figure in Australian cricket who gave close to 50 years of incredible service to Australian cricket, from his debut in the Ashes series of 1970-71, through to his time as National Selector, when many of the current group of Australian men’s players came into close contact with him,” Australia men’s Test captain Pat Cummins said.Rod Marsh, Greg Chappell and Dennis Lillee pose after their final Test•Getty Images

“He was brilliant to deal with because he knew the game inside-out, but also had a way of dealing with you to put you at your ease. I, along with countless other people in Australia, grew up hearing the stories of him as a fearless and tough cricketer, but his swashbuckling batting and his brilliance behind the stumps over more than a decade made him one of the all-time greats of our sport, not just in Australia, but globally.”When I think of Rod I think of a generous and larger-than-life character who always had a life-loving, positive and relaxed outlook, and his passing leaves a massive void in the Australian cricket community.” A joint statement by Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) president Shane Watson and chair Greg Dyer said, “In a very real way, Rod’s contribution and more accurately, his wonderful connection, reach through all generations of players before and after his own, all the way to the present group. His loss will be deeply felt by them all. Rod’s legacy to cricket is profound. He loved cricket, and cricket loved him back in spades.”CA chair Lachlan Henderson said, “This is a tremendously sad day for Australian cricket and for all those who loved and admired Rod Marsh. Rod will be forever remembered for the way he played the game and the pleasure he brought crowds as a member of some great Australian teams. ‘Caught Marsh, bowled Lillee’ has iconic status in our game. “Rod also made an enormous contribution to the game by identifying, coaching and mentoring many future stars in his various roles as coach and director at cricket academies in Australia and other cricket playing nations.”ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice also paid tribute, pointing out Marsh’s role in developing the ICC Cricket Academy. “As a young boy in Australia, falling in love with the sport of cricket, Rod was one of my heroes,” Allardice said. “And he also made such a contribution after his playing days as well, with young players in many countries. He had a strong involvement with the ICC, with the establishment of the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai. He masterminded the design of the facilities there. And young players are enjoying those facilities every day. So his legacy lives on.”Marsh also became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1982 and was elected to the Sport Australia Hall Of Fame in 1985 and the Cricket Hall Of Fame in 2005. He leaves his wife Ros and sons Dan, who captained Tasmania to their first Sheffield Shield win, Paul, a former CEO of the ACA, and Jamie.

Kishan, Shreyas fifties muscle India to huge win

The pair took the hosts to 199 for 2 and Sri Lanka wilted in the chase despite a half-century from Charith Asalanka

Deivarayan Muthu24-Feb-20221:51

Jaffer: Kishan showed why he should be in the T20 World Cup squad

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer blitzed a depleted Sri Lanka attack with half-centuries as India eased to a 1-0 lead. After flickering briefly in the T20I series against West Indies, Kishan caught fire on Thursday and at one stage he even threatened to reach three figures.Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka ultimately had Kishan holing out in the 17th over for 89 off 56 balls, but Shreyas launched from the platform laid by Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Shreyas’ unbeaten 57 off 28 balls swelled India’s total to 199 for 2, which proved well beyond Sri Lanka’s grasp. The visitors sleepwalked their way to 57 for 4 in their first ten overs. In stark contrast, India had scored 58 for 0 in the powerplay alone and the momentum seamlessly switched from Kishan to Rohit to Shreyas.Charith Asalanka held off India with a fine fifty in the chase before Rohit’s men wrapped up a 62-run victory. The opening salvo
After Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera rushed India’s openers in the first two overs with speeds north of 140kph, Kishan lined up first-change Chamika Karunaratne for a triptych of fours. Kishan then used the pace and bounce of the quicks to his advantage, pulling Kumara and Chameera for sixes. Kishan claimed six of the seven boundaries India had hit in the powerplay.Rohit had dashed out of the blocks when he opened during the T20Is against West Indies, but he was largely becalmed in the early exchanges against Sri Lanka. He did hit a higher gear when he picked a googly from Jeffrey Vandersay and sent it over midwicket for six.Kumara snapped the opening stand at 111 in the 12th over when he bowled Rohit for 44, with a cutter that kept low. It could’ve been snapped much earlier had Janith Liyanage not dropped Kishan at deep midwicket when the batter was on 43. Liyanage eventually caught him at the same position, off Shanaka, but the miss cost Sri Lanka 46 runs.Kishan rumbled to a 30-ball half-century and celebrated it with a helicoptered boundary between deep midwicket and wide long-on. While Vandersay kept hiding the ball away from his swinging arc with wrong’uns, the seamers kept pitching it in Kishan’s arc.In the enforced absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, who has tested positive for Covid-19 once again and hence has not even made this trip, and Maheesh Theekshana, Sri Lanka’s attack lacked any penetration.Shreyas’ finishing act
Shreyas, who was bumped up to No.3 had a fairly quiet start: he was on a run-a-ball 12 at one point. He then exploded against Chameera’s pace and Karunaratne’s lack of pace, taking them for a combined 43 off 16 balls. He brought up the fastest half-century of the game, off a mere 25 balls, and pushed India closer to 200.Sri Lanka’s rickety chase
Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka first ball – cleaned up by a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery that shot low. Bhuvneshwar took out Kamil Mishara, the other opener, too, having him drag a catch to midwicket. After being sloppy in the field, Liyanage was similarly sloppy with the bat, labouring to 11 off 17 balls. When the returning Ravindra Jadeja found quick turn to have Dinesh Chandimal stumped for 10 in the tenth over, Sri Lanka were 51 for 4. That they got a respectable 137 for 6 was down to Asalanka’s effort. However, he lacked substantial support from the other end as the next-best score for Sri Lanka was No.8 Chameera’s 24.The rapidly rising asking rate allowed India to experiment with Venkatesh Iyer’s medium-pace and debutant Deepak Hooda’s offbreaks. Venkatesh came away with 2 for 36 in his three overs while Hooda went wicketless in his three overs. No Virat Kohli. No Rishabh Pant. No Suryakumar Yadav. No Deepak Chahar. No problem for India.

Zak Crawley century, Joe Root fifty drive England into final day

West Indies toil during unbroken 193-run second-wicket stand but rain cuts further time from the game

Valkerie Baynes11-Mar-2022Joe Root looked genuinely impressed by what he was seeing. As Zak Crawley drove Kemar Roach down the ground for a boundary – not exactly sweetly struck but with the momentum of his considerable levers behind it – the England captain met him in the middle of the pitch for a couple of fist-bumps and approving nods, chattering away in encouragement and eliciting a broad grin from his young charge.Given that it was boundary number eight of 16 and counting for Crawley, who was compiling the second Test century of his career, the exchange may not have been unusual but in the circumstances, it stood out. After a dirty day three when Root more commonly wore a look of anguish as his attack failed to capitalise on prior opportunity, not to mention a tumultuous start to the year, England turned the tables on West Indies with an unbroken second-wicket stand in Antigua worth 193, a century and fifty so far to its protagonists and a 153-run lead heading into the final day.Related

The hosts failed to make further inroads after Roach removed debutant opener Alex Lees, lbw in single figures for the second time in the match, to put the tourists at 24 for 1, still 40 runs in arrears. On a pitch that had admittedly offered nothing for the bowlers all match, the West Indies bowlers leaked runs, Veerasammy Permaul particularly expensive in conceding 51 off his 10 overs.Fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach, meanwhile, had been one of the brighter lights for England, bowling 20 maidens – almost half his overs – as he took 2 for 79, including West Indies’ last wicket with the third ball of the day as the hosts took a 64-run first-innings lead.Quick Jayden Seales was the man dismissed, and he did not enjoy much more success with the ball, 12 wicketless overs costing 51 runs. But Roach, who was getting considerable swing with the new ball on the fourth morning, set Lees up with a series of deliveries that moved away from the left-hander before banging one in full and straight to beat the inside edge and slam into the front pad. Lees reviewed, perhaps in hope after seeing Crawley successfully overturn an lbw decision from umpire Gregory Brathwaite in the first over, only to have it confirmed that the ball was crashing into leg stump.Crawley was yet to score when he was reprieved the first time, with Hawk-Eye showing the ball was missing leg stump by some way. He had moved to 18 when West Indies burned a review shortly after Lees’ dismissal, Crawley adjudged not out to a Roach inswinger that hit him high on the back leg outside off stump. He had to wait out a 10-minute rain delay and Alzarri Joseph maidens either side of it on 49 before he regained the strike from Root and flipped Roach off his hip for a single to bring up his fifty off 100 balls. Crawley peeled off his next fifty from 81 balls as he and Root hit full flow and West Indies floundered for ideas despite trying seven different bowling options.Joe Root celebrates his half-century•Gareth Copley/AFP via Getty ImagesCaught behind off Seales for just 8 in the first innings, Crawley tightened up his defence but played expansively where it was warranted, pulling the short ball with authority, cutting anything wide and finding the boundary with the sweep and drive also.Root raised his half-century late in the afternoon session with a four off Permaul through third, and Crawley survived a hearty shout by West Indies, thinking he’d been caught at slip off the spinner, but for replays to show he had edged the ball into the pitch before it bobbed up to the fielder.Having scored 267 against Pakistan at Southampton in August 2020, his eighth Test, Crawley had made 12 single-figure scores – including two ducks – in 21 innings since.Called back into the side for the first time since the English summer for the last three Ashes Tests when England initially dropped Rory Burns and then Haseeb Hameed, Crawley scored a second-innings 77 in Sydney and survived the post-series clear-out, which also saw Lees called up to accompany him at the top of the order.Just like 19 months before, Crawley again lived up to the potential that put him there as he and Root gave England something to smile about before the intermittent rain that had punctuated play briefly a few times set in.

Amorim must unleash Man Utd sensation who was "insulted" by Ten Hag

This week represents a new era for Manchester United with new boss Ruben Amorim finally getting his feet under the table and joining the Red Devils.

The 39-year-old will aim to implant his tactics into his new playing squad over the international break ahead of his game in charge against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on the 24th November.

Amorim takes over from Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was given his marching orders following a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United a couple of weeks ago.

It spelt the end of his 28-month stint in charge at Old Trafford, with his poor start to the new Premier League season ultimately sealing his fate despite financial backing from the hierarchy during the off-season.

It’s likely that Amorim will completely strip back the current tactics, undoubtedly sticking with his 3-4-3 system that saw Sporting CP claim the Liga Portugal title last season, along with a Champions League victory over Manchester City just last week.

However, one player will still remain an integral part of the first team, handing Amorim all the tools to be a success in the years ahead.

Why Bruno will be crucial under Amorim for Man Utd

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been the shining light in a disappointing United side for months on end in recent times, often being the man to single-handedly dig the side out of trouble in desperate moments.

He joined the Red Devils in a £68m deal back in January 2020, missing out on playing under Amorim at Sporting by just a couple of months after his appointment in March of the same year.

The 30-year-old has been worth every penny since his big-money transfer, consistently producing the goods in attacking areas throughout his near five years in Manchester.

Since his arrival, Fernandes, who’s now United’s club captain, has registered 83 goals and 73 assists in his 250 appearances – an average of a goal contribution in every 1.6 games he appears in.

Undoubtedly, he will remain a key player under his compatriot, holding all the keys to any potential success in the years ahead for the Red Devils – possibly featuring in numerous different roles.

He could feature as a box-to-box number eight, or even as a wide attacking midfielder behind the striker, but it’s likely he will star in the former, having the ability to dictate the play more in such a role.

The recent form of one other player could force him into that role, with Amorim desperately needing to utilise one player who was often starved of game time under the previous management of Ten Hag.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The man who could be better than Bruno under Amorim

Winger Amad Diallo arrived in a shock £36m deal from Italian side Atalanta back in January 2021 after featuring just five times as a professional for the Serie A outfit.

However, the United hierarchy obviously saw huge amounts of talent in the Ivorian to bring him to Manchester – often having to bide his time under Ten Hag.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a stellar loan spell at Sunderland in 2022/23, scoring 14 times in 42 appearances – but it was only enough for a bit part role in the first-team last season.

Amad only made nine league appearances in 2023/24 – totalling just 388 minutes – with Ten Hag often opting for big-money flop Antony rather than handing minutes to the talented youngster. It was a decision that MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst claimed should have left the Ivorian “insulted” with his treatment.

However, this season, he’s already showcased he has all the tools to be a real threat under Amorim, registering three goals and two assists – surpassing his tally from any of his previous campaigns at the club.

Within the last week alone, he’s registered two goals and an assist, with his double firing the Red Devils to a 2-0 victory over PAOK in the Europa League.

Given United’s lack of success in the final third in recent months, Diallo’s form has certainly pushed him further up the pecking order and demonstrated that he could prevent any further big-money investment by being a useful asset to Amorim.

At 22, he’s now at the perfect age to demonstrate why the hierarchy splashed such a hefty fee on him at such a tender age, with his early form in 2024/25 making him an extremely useful asset to the new boss.

-Isso depende de dois fatores. Experiência do treinador.
