Reliable journalist James Pearce has now provided a major update regarding the future of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.
Van Dijk's Liverpool future
The Reds have made a wonderful start to life under new head coach Arne Slot, sitting top of the Premier League table after winning seven of their opening eight fixtures in the competition this season. Despite there being a huge amount of positivity on show at Anfield currently, there are lingering concerns over the futures of Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah – all three Liverpool superstars are out of contract at the end of this season and none have signed extensions yet.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
Van Dijk may now be 33 years of age, but there are no signs of him slowing down at all, with the Reds skipper arguably standing out as his side’s best player so far this season, perhaps alongside compatriot Ryan Gravenberch.
The Dutchman remains possibly the leading centre-back in world football, which many have felt has been the case for the last five or six years, so the thought of Liverpool losing him next summer is something that doesn’t bear thinking about for supporters. Now, a big update has dropped regarding the next step in his career.
Pearce drops fresh Van Dijk claim at Liverpool
According to Pearce on X, there is “positive news” regarding Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool, with “discussions” over an extension now taking place.
This is massive news from a Liverpool perspective, with Van Dijk already a legendary Reds player, but also having plenty of years still left in him at the top level.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
As mentioned, the Netherlands captain has been near-perfect for the Reds this season, starting every single minute in the league and averaging 5.4 clearances and 3.9 aerial duel wins per game. Meanwhile, Slot is under no illusions as to how important keeping hold of Van Dijk is.
“We all see how good he still is and how much he contributes to our offensive style. What you don’t see, and I do see, is how important he is in the training sessions.
“He is the most loud and he brings a lot of energy and quality into the sessions. What you see at the weekends is what I also see during the week and that is what you want to see. He is definitely our leader.”
0 duels won: Slot must instantly drop 4/10 Liverpool star after Chelsea
Slot must ditch 4/10 Liverpool star who won no duels against Chelsea.

This latest update suggests that Van Dijk looks more likely to sign a new deal than leave Liverpool, which has to be seen as a massive positive. Now, it’s a case of the same happening with Alexander-Arnold and Salah, with the trio all more important than any new signings.

Whilst eyebrows will have undoubtedly been raised for the magnitude of the investment since the arrival of Todd Boehly at Chelsea, there’s little doubt about the impact of the additions in recent weeks.
The American may have spent upwards of £1bn on new talent since taking the reins at Stamford Bridge, but numerous players have thrived since their respective moves to aid the Blues’ Premier League ambitions.
Nicolas Jackson was a player who was often in the firing line for criticism last season for his wastefulness in front of goal, missing various big chances in key moments.
However, in the 2024/25 campaign, the Senegalese has been a revelation, scoring six times in his first 11 appearances, also notching three assists in the process.
Despite Jackson’s turn in form within the final third, he’s still been unable to get the better of one teammate who has started the new season as he finished the last.
Cole Palmer’s time at Chelsea
Winger Cole Palmer has enjoyed another unbelievable few weeks at Chelsea, going from strength to strength in the new season, picking up exactly where he left off last campaign.
The 22-year-old has already registered a total of 12 combined goals and assists in as many games, producing some phenomenal moments of magic including his long-range free-kick against Brighton at the Bridge.
As a result of his recent displays under Enzo Maresca, he was named in the top 30 of the Ballon d’Or, finishing ahead of the likes of Declan Rice and Mats Hummels.
However, he could be missing for the next couple of weeks after suffering a knee injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United, leaving Maresca sweating over his potential fitness.
The boss and the supporters will be hoping that he will be fit enough to face London rivals Arsenal at the home on Sunday afternoon, looking to build on his sensational start to the new season.
He will undoubtedly play a huge part in any potential success that the Blues endure this season, with sides now starting to pay closer attention to the former Manchester City star to prevent him from running them ragged.
However, despite his recent form, he could’ve been aided in his attempts had the club kept hold of one star who came through the Cobham academy setup.
A player who Chelsea sold too soon
Right-back Ola Aina came through the club’s academy setup, making six senior appearances for the Chelsea first-team during the 2016/17 season.
Ole Aina
However, the Nigeria international would be sent on various different loan spells to the likes of Hull City and Torino, before permanently joining the Serie A side in 2019.
Fast-forward to the current day and the 28-year-old is currently plying his trade for Nottingham Forest after joining the Reds on a free transfer during the summer of 2023.
Aina has cemented himself as a first-team regular under current boss Nuno Espírito Santo this season, starting all ten Premier League matches in the process.

The “sensational” full-back, as described by journalist Louis Wheeldon, scored just his second goal for the club last weekend in the 3-0 victory over West Ham United, helping Forest climb to third in the Premier League.
However, he’s also produced some magnificent stats across the board, many of which would’ve allowed current Blues star Palmer to reach the next level during his time in West London.
Aina has won 14 tackles and 46 duels in his opening ten games during the ongoing Premier League campaign, providing that defensive solidity, and allowing Palmer to stay in advanced areas and focus on that aspect of his game.

He’s also completed ten dribbles and created five chances in the final third, potentially providing the English international with the added ammunition to further improve on his impressive tallies.
Whilst Reece James and Malo Gusto remain two important defensive options for Maresca, there’s no denying Aina’s quality, potentially offering a more experienced option.
At the time it may have seen the right call to part ways with the Nigerian, but it’s a decision that looks to have been a mistake given his recent form in England’s top flight.
Boehly must permanently axe Chelsea flop who earns even more than Palmer
Chelsea need to sell a player who’s earning even more than Cole Palmer.
It’s been an interesting season for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have played some of the most entertaining football in the Premier League this season and have picked up some big wins along the way, like the ones against Manchester United and Aston Villa, but slip-ups against the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace see them remain out of the top four at present.
However, where the North Londoners have been inconsistent in the league, they have been exemplary and remain undefeated in both the League Cup and Europa League.

In fact, the Lilywhites are second out of 36 teams in the latter, and with that, they can afford to rest a few players for the game against Galatasaray tonight, especially as one of the stars Postecoglou should start is more than good enough to help shut down Victor Osimhen.
Why Postecoglou should rest starters
Okay, there is certainly an argument to be made that, given the strength of Galatasaray and the intimidation factor their stadium can provide, Postecoglou should be looking to start his absolute strongest lineup tonight.
However, there are a couple of reasons why this might not be necessary or the best idea, with the first being quite obvious: injuries.
The club’s campaign was utterly derailed by a rash of unfortunate injuries around this time last year, and given how injury-prone the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, and Rodrigo Bentancur seem to be, it feels unwise to risk them tonight, especially when there is a potential banana skin waiting for the team on Saturday in the guise of Ipswich Town.
Micky van de Ven withdrawn due to injury
The second reason is that tonight’s game is the perfect opportunity to hand out more game time to those who might not start every week and to put them into what could be the most hostile environment of the season to test their mettle.
Moreover, as we saw against Manchester City and in the game against Aston Villa, the players outside of Postecoglou’s first-choice XI are good enough to make a difference in challenging games, and there is one player in particular who deserves to start, someone who could play a significant role in keeping Victor Osimhen quiet.
The Spurs ace who deserves to start against Galatasaray
As we said, several players deserve to start in Turkey tonight, but in this case, we are talking about Yves Bissouma in particular.
The Mali international has made ten appearances for Postecoglou this season, but in the last two games, he started on the bench, with Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr the manager’s preferred midfielders to play alongside the incredible Dejan Kulusevski.
Yet, in both games, he came off the bench to play a significant role in two outstanding wins.
Against City, he played the entire second half and was a constant nuisance for the Champions’ attackers, earning himself a 9/10 match rating from LondonWorld’s Rahman Osman for his tireless defensive work and sensational goal-line clearance to deny Nico O’Reilly from grabbing an equaliser.
The “world-class” defensive midfielder, as dubbed by Sky Sports presenter Adam Smith, didn’t do anything quite as eye-catching in his 34 minutes of action against Villa, but was once again a constant throne in the opposition’s side.
He won 100% of his ground duels, made two clearances, one interception, one tackle, lost the ball just twice, maintained a passing accuracy of 100% and took 29 touches.
He was so effective that despite his relatively short time on the pitch, the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded him an 8/10 on the night, writing that he ‘impressed again off the bench, snapping into tackles and helping Spurs to win the midfield battle in the second half.’
So, with back-to-back brilliant displays off the bench against two of the best teams in England, it would be fair to say the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has more than earned a chance to start tonight’s Europa League clash.
Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma
Ultimately, if he can keep the likes of Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, Bernardo Silva and Savinnho quiet in the space of a week, he should be able to handle Osimhen, who’s not been playing top opposition week in and week out this season.

James Pattinson had a good all-round day to give Victoria hope of pushing for victory
ESPNcricinfo staff22-Nov-2021Travis Dean became the third Victoria batter to twice carry their bat through a Sheffield Shield innings to earn his team a narrow first-innings lead at the SCG.James Pattinson then struck twice either side of a rain delay in the final session to leave the visitors with hope of pushing for victory on the final day if the weather allows.Playing his first game of the season, Dean faced 300 balls as he contributed more than half Victoria’s total. He had previously carried his bat against the same opposition at the MCG in the 2016-17 season.Matthew Elliott and Bill Lawry are the only others to have done so twice or more for Victoria in the 129-year history of the Shield.Dean was dropped at slip by Kurtis Patterson on 43 but that was his only error of the innings. He added 143 for the fourth wicket with Jonathan Merlo to turn the innings around from 3 for 2 on the first evening. The pair were close to seeing out the opening session before Merlo was trapped lbw by Moises Henriques and then Sam Harper was caught behind for a duck off Tanveer Sangha. At 5 for 145, New South Wales would have had hope of a lead themselves but Dean then added 111 in 27 overs with Pattinson who struck the ball cleanly. Sangha eventually broke through and the final five wickets fell for 15 with Hayden Kerr striking twice on his debut.Pattinson removed the in-form Daniel Hughes in the first over of New South Wales’ second innings when the opener drove loosely to slip. On resumption, Matthew Gilkes also edged into the cordon where Peter Handscomb took a sharp catch.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has found it challenging to refrain himself from over-hitting at the nets and instead keep himself fresh for the matches. Williamson’s elbow injury flared up during the warm-ups in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup and the team management has managed him carefully since then.Williamson had sat out New Zealand’s first warm-up, against Netherlands, with a niggly hamstring. He then returned to action against Australia, top-scoring for his side with 37 off 30 balls, but aggravated his elbow. The elbow complaint has been a long-standing one for Williamson, forcing him to miss the ODI series at home against Bangladesh, the start of the first leg of IPL 2021 in India in April, the Edgbaston Test against England and the inaugural Hundred. The elbow was more recently put to test, again, when New Zealand played three Super-12 fixtures in five days across three venues in UAE.”Yeah that has been a bit of a challenge for me personally – the balance between the loading of the elbow and things like that,” Williamson said on the eve of the semi-finals against England in Abu Dhabi.”So, trying to stay as fresh as possible for the game. So, it’s been a bit of a delicate balance to get my head around and I certainly look forward to the day it’s gone (laughs) and I don’t have to worry too much about it.”But, as it stands, it’s a topic of discussion and [I’m] just trying to work closely with the physio to make sure I’m as fresh as possible for the game. It has had an impact on loading, which therefore means training has been a lot less to be fair.”Head coach Gary Stead also said that Williamson’s stints at the nets have been limited although he prefers to hit a lot of balls at training.”Kane’s good at the moment,” Stead said. “He hasn’t probably trained as much as he would have liked. But that’s just making sure that the time when he’s batting, hopefully, that’s in the middle for us and winning games of cricket that he’s not overdoing the elbow and probably training for him is the chance of making it worse. We’ve managed that well and I think that’s the mental challenge for Kane – to work that out as well.”Three days after the T20 World Cup final in Dubai, New Zealand are set to kick off their India tour with a three-match T20I series. New Zealand will then begin their World Test Championship defence in the two-match Test series in Kanpur and Mumbai. The same T20I squad that was picked for the World Cup will also tour India. This means Williamson’s niggly elbow is set for a heavier workout in the subcontinent.

Usman Khawaja will have no issues if he’s overlooked for his mate Travis Head in the first Ashes Test.Khawaja and Head are bidding for the vacant No. 5 batting berth in Australia’s team for the first Test against England starting on December 8. The state captains squared off in a Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide in their last first-class audition before the Ashes.Queensland’s Khawaja scored 4 and South Australian skipper Head 8 in their first innings. Head then scored a second-innings 101 before Khawaja slammed a 52 not out from just 36 balls to secure the Bulls an eight-wicket win.Khawaja shunned the billing of the Shield fixture as a shootout between the members of Australia’s 15-man squad for the first Ashes Test.”I’m going to be 100 percent honest with you, it’s not even on my mind right now,” Khawaja said. “I’m honestly just trying to win games for Queensland and whatever will be, will be.”Heady deserves it as much as I do. I’m really good mates with him. I have got no issues with whatever happens.”Khawaja and Head have both scored two Shield tons this season, with the former also posting two half-centuries and Head scoring one. The 34-year-old Khawaja, whose last Test was in August 2019, said his mind was at ease when, in the past, he would have been anxious about possible Test selection.”I wasn’t always mellow,” he said. “This is experience…I have just come to realise after a long time of a lot of work with myself and my mind and just learning about myself, it [being anxious] just doesn’t help.”The best time I play is when I am relaxed. And, to be honest I have got a lot of things in life that I am very grateful for and those are the things now that I focus on.”Because I know within the cricket bubble how much it can get you and that is how I used to be – it has taken years and years of practice to not be that way.”

The final will be held on December 31 in Dubai.During the match, Sri Lanka put Bangladesh in to bat. Offspinner Treveen Mathew removed both openers Mahfijul Islam and Iftakher Hossain before Prantik Nawrose Nabil and Aich Mollah added 55 runs for the third wicket. Both however fell in quick succession to left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage; Nabil made 45 while Mollah scored 24. Ariful Islam and Md Fahim were unbeaten on 19 and 27 respectively when the match was stopped. The Under-19 World Cup is scheduled to be held in West Indies from mid-January. Bangladesh are defending champions.
Leeds United fell to their second defeat of the Championship season on Wednesday night as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Millwall at The Den.
Their only other loss in the division, also a 1-0 defeat, came against Burnley at Elland Road and the Whites remain inside the top six, as they chase promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking.
Daniel Farke’s side just missed out on promotion last season, finishing third in the table before losing in the play-off final, and the German head coach will be hoping that it is second time lucky this term.
The German manager won the Championship two times in three attempts with Norwich City, which shows that he knows how to get out of the league, but it is down to him to prove that he can do it with another club.
Farke’s hopes of achieving promotion in his second season in West Yorkshire were, though, dealt a blow during the summer transfer window, as a number of his key players moved on.
Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, and Glen Kamara all sealed permanent exits, with Summerville and Rutter’s departures coming as a huge blow to the manager’s attacking options.
Summerville's form since leaving Leeds
The Dutch forward earned himself a move to Premier League side West Ham United after a superb return of 19 goals and nine assists in the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign.
His exploits in the final third resulted in Summerville claiming the PFA Championship Player of the Year award, which made it difficult for the Whites to keep hold of him after they failed to win promotion.
Since his move to the Hammers, however, the 23-year-old wizard has not enjoyed the easiest of starts to the season in the English top-flight.
Summerville has failed to establish himself as a regular starter for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham and has not shown enough in his minutes on the pitch to earn more game time.

As you can see in the table above, the former Leeds superstar has only started two of his nine appearances, which suggests that the manager does not trust him to start week-in-week-out at this point in his career.
In those nine games, the winger has produced a goal but has also failed to provide much in the way of creativity and has lost the majority of his physical duels.
For the £25m that they reportedly paid the Whites to secure his signature, West Ham will be hoping that Summerville will eventually kick on and emerge as a key player for the Hammers.
Rutter's form since leaving Leeds
Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion smashed their transfer record to sign Rutter from Leeds for a reported fee of £40m, and he has fared better than his former teammate so far.
The France U21 international racked up six goals and 15 assists in 42 appearances in the Championship for the West Yorkshire outfit last season, which convinced the Seagulls to splash a huge amount of cash on the attacking midfielder.
Brighton have been lining up in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation under Fabian Hürzeler this term, with Rutter up alongside Danny Welbeck in the former and in the number ten position in the latter.
This has helped to allow the French star to showcase the best of his abilities in the final third as both a scorer and a creator for Brighton, establishing himself as a regular starter whilst Summerville still struggles to do so.

He is also incredibly unfortunate not to be on three assists and four ‘big chances’ created as his tackle-cum-cross for Welbeck against Tottenham, for reasons unknown, was not accredited to him as an assist or chance created.

Whilst Summerville and Rutter have had varying degrees of success in the top-flight since leaving Elland Road, there is one former Leeds star who is outperforming both of them – Chris Wood.
Chris Wood's form this season
It has been over seven years since the New Zealand international made the move from Leeds to Burnley for a reported fee of £15m, shortly after Thomas Christiansen arrived at the club, as the manager cashed in on the forward in his first transfer window in charge.
He had racked up 44 goals in 88 games for the Whites during a two-year spell in West Yorkshire and then managed a return of 53 goals in 165 games during his time with Burnley.
Chris Wood
Wood then spent 12 months with Newcastle, from January 2022 to January 2023, and only produced five goals in 39 outings for the Magpies, before his transfer to Nottingham Forest – initially on loan – at the start of last year.
The former Leeds star only scored one goal in seven games during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign for the Tricky Trees, before hitting his stride last term with 14 goals in 31 Premier League matches.

The 32-year-old marksman, who was described as a “winger’s dream” by ex-West Ham and Wolves forward Matt Jarvis, has only been outscored by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (11), which means that he has been one of the top strikers in the division this term.
He has outperformed and outscored both Rutter and Summerville in the Premier League this season and it is a shame that Leeds were never able to enjoy his goalscoring exploits in the top-flight during his time at Elland Road.
