Crystal Palace’s recruitment model over the last few years has allowed the club to develop into a particularly solid Premier League side.
Steve Parish and the hierarchy have narrowed their focus to signing younger players who have the potential to develop at Selhurst Park, making an impact on the first team whilst also banking a profit in the years ahead.
Michael Olise is an excellent example of the club’s recruitment, joining in a £8m deal from Championship side Reading back in the summer of 2021, before making 90 appearances for the Eagles and leaving in a £50m move to Bayern Munich this summer.
Crystal Palace's Michael Olise
Eberechi Eze is another example of their scouting of England’s second tier, arriving in a £16m move from QPR, with the attacking midfielder now a consistent England international who has cemented himself as one of the very best talents in the division.
However, despite their excellent incomings, the club may have made a mistake in allowing one youngster to depart South London.
The Palace man who left too soon
Palace’s academy has been the home to many impressive talents, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka just one star to breakthrough into the first team before banking the club £50m when he moved to Manchester United in 2019.
However, fellow defender Jake O’Brien is another example of a young talent who was seen as one for the future, but unfortunately for the fanbase, was sold to Ligue 1 side Lyon last season.
The Irishman only moved to Selhurst Park in 2021 from Cork City, but after two years in the academy setup, he departed the club for just £1m and failed to make a single first-team appearance.
O’Brien has since gone on to star in Ligue 1 for Lyon, making 32 appearances for the French side in 2023/24, scoring five goals from centre-back – as he helped the club secure a return to European football.
As a result of his stellar performances, he’s seen a big change in his career, whilst also seeing a huge increase in his market value.
Jake O’Brien’s market value in 2024
Just 12 months on from his departure from South London, O’Brien swapped Ligue 1 for a return to the Premier League in a move to join relegation battlers Everton.
The 23-year-old joined Sean Dyche’s side for a fee in the region of £16m – a huge figure compared to the price received for his services last summer.
His transfer fee this summer yields a 1500% increase on the price he left Palace for to join Lyon, with the club undoubtedly selling the youngster too cheaply.

The situation could’ve been made worse should current centre-back Marc Guehi have left the club during the transfer window – potentially leaving Oliver Glasner’s side light in defensive areas.
O’Brien’s career has jumped to the next level after his move, becoming a regular in the Republic of Ireland international squad – further adding to his value and inflicting yet more pain on Palace.
His talents would’ve been perfect for the current Eagles squad, providing yet more defensive solidity and handing Glasner more quality in his attempts to secure a top-half finish this season.
However, it will remain a case of what could’ve been for the club, with Parish having to live with the consequences of selling the talented youngster on the cheap.
Crystal Palace flop left in 2020, now he's outscoring Nketiah by a mile
Crystal Palace may have regrets over the way they handled this exit.
The Yorkshire Evening Post have shared the stance of a midfield free agent possibly joining Leeds United amid injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.
Leeds transfer news
The Whites are still reeling from Illan Meslier’s dreadful late error away to Sunderland, with the goalkeeper gifting the hosts a 2-2 draw in stoppage time at the Stadium of Light.
It has still been a solid start to the season for Daniel Farke’s side, however, even though it hasn’t always been perfect, and Leeds will expect to be one of the clubs in the mix to seal automatic promotion from the Championship come next May.
The Whites will always be looking to complete more transfer business moving forward, in order to give them the best chance of going up to the Premier League, and while the transfer window is shut currently, free agents are available to come in at any point.
Jake Livermore is in that position and has been mooted with a move to Leeds, with the 34-year-old enjoying a loan spell at Elland Road way back in 2011. He was most recently at Watford but departed when his contract expired at the end of last season.
Now, a fresh update has emerged regarding another available midfield option being mentioned as a target for the Championship giants, as they look to tackle injuries to midfield pair Ampadu and Gruev.
Leeds stance on signing free agent revealed
According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Christoph Kramer is unlikely to be interested in joining Leeds on a free, should an approach come, instead preferring to stay in Germany:
“The YEP understands any Leeds approach attempting to lure the 33-year-old on a short-term deal is likely to be rejected with the player’s intention to remain in Germany where he has appeared regularly as a television pundit, following a decade-long spell with Borussia Monchengladbach.”
While Farke has admitted that he is “not a big friend of signing players who are out of contract at the beginning of October”, he may have considered making a move for Kramer, considering both Ampadu and Gruev are unavailable currently, leaving a gaping void in the middle of the park.
The 33-year-old is not only considered a “legend” by former club Borussia Monchengladbach, spending eight years there, but there is also the small matter of him winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany, having only made his debut for his country earlier that year.
Not just Meslier: Farke must drop Leeds man who's bottom 3% for duels won
The Whites central defender continues to endure a frustrating season.
1 ByDan Emery Oct 5, 2024
That highlights the pedigree that Kramer has, and while his best days are arguably behind him given his age, he could still have been an asset for Leeds, putting his experience to good use and plugging the void left by Ampadu and Gruev until the New Year.
It looks as though a move is unlikely, though, and it will be interesting to see if Farke looks at another option instead, or risks getting by until the January transfer window opens with Joe Rothwell, Ao Tanaka and Charlie Crew.
Kimber scores 63 in four-wicket, DLS victory but other results don’t go Foxes’ way
ECB Reporters Network12-Aug-2021
Louis Kimber of Leicestershire celebrates a half-century•Getty Images
Leicestershire Foxes missed out on a Royal London Cup knockout spot despite a Louis Kimber-inspired four-run DLS victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Wantage Road. The Foxes needed to win and hope for two of Surrey, Somerset and Yorkshire to lose but in spite of holding up their end of the bargain they fell a point shy in Group 1.Kimber struck 63, his second List A fifty, with Rishi Patel, Arron Lilley and Rehan Ahmed helping the Foxes to 271.Rain meant the Steelbacks needed 266 from 48 over, but Rob Keogh’s 52 wasn’t enough as they fell agonisingly short – with Will Davis, Gavin Griffiths and Ben Mike all taking two wickets apiece. The Foxes won the toss and hared out the gate as Patel aggressively blasted 41 off 33 balls, including a pick up six over midwicket. He and opening partner Harry Swindles were both bounced out by Ben Sanderson – the former plinking to extra cover to hand the fast bowler his 50th List A wicket and the latter wonderfully caught by a diving Saif Zaib at deep square leg.Like Patel, Lilley showed that an attacking spirit was the best way to make runs – the all-rounder striking 46 off 37 deliveries for his third consecutive highest format score.Partnerships were extinguished just as they started to flourish – eight of the stands producing between 20 and 50 runs – with Lewis Hill losing the top of his off-stump to Sanderson, Lilley stumped and George Rhodes leg before to Simon Kerrigan.Mike tamely chipped to midwicket and Ed Barnes was plumb in front to Zaib but Kimber provided the paste with a 53-ball half-century. He was squared up and bowled by a crafty Kerrigan delivery, while 16-year-old Ahmed marshalled the tail with a promising unbeaten 40 before Zaib bowled both Griffiths and Davis – the spinner ending with personal best figures of 3 for 37.The Steelbacks raced to 45 in 7.5 overs before rain helped slow up a wicket which was already friendly to the spin bowlers.Emilio Gay collected 42 of the first 53 runs, including eight boundaries, before he was lbw to George Rhodes and Ricardo Vasconcelos followed soon after when he slashed to point.A third wicket in 10 balls, Ben Curran chopping on, came as the hosts stalled – with a nine overs gap between boundaries highlighting the Foxes’ containment.Luke Procter and Keogh were pragmatic, if rarely pretty, in their 89-run stand. The latter reached his half-century off 56 balls before swatting to midwicket but the former fell short when he hammered straight to point for 48 – both falling to Mike.Zaib tried to take control with 42 from 41, which included a towering maximum over square, but swung a full toss straight to deep midwicket with 37 still needed from 25 balls.James Sales had put on 63 with Zaib and picked out exactly the same fielder, as did Kerrigan. It meant 25 were needed from the last 11 balls, but despite Sanderson’s big-hitting, Jack White was run out to drag the Foxes over the line.
Already thinking about their 2025 recruitment strategy, Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing a move to sign a future star in a deal that would see them beat the likes of Arsenal to the youngster’s signature.
Wolves transfer news
Those in the in the Midlands endured a mixed summer. Whilst they lost both Max Kilman and Pedro Neto, the late additions of Andre and Carlos Forbs should prove to be money well spent, though only time will tell whether that is in fact the case.
Wolves could unearth their next Jimenez with teen sensation
Gary O’Neil may have the club’s next version of Jimenez brewing in the academy…
ByRoss Kilvington Sep 14, 2024
Andre is a particularly interesting arrival. The Brazilian previously attracted the interest of Liverpool before a move ultimately never developed. Getting his Premier League chance courtesy of Wolves nonetheless, Andre could now make the Reds regret their hesitant pursuit by becoming a key part of Gary O’Neil’s midfield.
Still just 23 years old and fresh from a standout spell at Fluminense, Andre could prove to be one of the most underrated signings of the summer transfer window in the Premier League. But Wolves aren’t done there when it comes to midfield additions, it seems.
According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Wolves are now keen on signing Souleymane Sidibe from Stoke City in a deal that would see them beat the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Midlands rivals Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to his signature.
Just 17 years old, the central midfielder is already playing a part for Stoke’s first team in the Championship, grabbing an assist from the bench in his first league appearance of the season as the Potters defeated Plymouth Argyle 1-0.
Now, the teenager could get the chance to make a similar move to the one that Archie Gray completed in the summer, as he swapped Leeds United for Tottenham Hotspur. Potentially following in his footsteps, Sidibe has quite the decision to make in 2025.
"Terrific" Sidibe is one for the future
For a club like Wolves, welcoming young talent before developing them into top prospects should be the way forward and there would be no better way to represent that plan than by signing Sidibe. The teenager looks destined for the Premier League and the idea of such a talent working alongside Andre and Joao Gomes is a mouth-watering one, to say the least.
The current campaign isn’t Sidibe’s first in senior football of course, having earned the praise of former manager Alex Neil last season. Neil told BBC Stoke Radio after handing the midfielder his first senior start in a Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion last season: “I thought his performance justified why he’s been with the first team all pre-season and why I played him in the game.
“I had no concerns over him. He’s a terrific talent but he’s also really mature, for being so young. He did exactly as I expected him to do – he did wonderfully well and he’s played in a Stoke team that won the game, and played the majority of the match.
“I think when you’re 16 years old, most players of that age could only dream of doing something like that.”
One Rangers player’s performance in the 4-1 defeat to Lyon was lambasted by the watching media on a terrible night at Ibrox for Philippe Clement’s side.
Rangers humbled by Lyon in Europe
The Gers enjoyed seeing rivals Celtic thumped 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund earlier in the week, but the hope was that they could show the Scottish Premiership off in a better light when Lyon made the trip to Ibrox for a Europa League clash on Thursday evening.
Instead, Clement’s side were comprehensively beaten on their own turf, succumbing to a 4-1 defeat and looking another level down in quality from their opponents. Tom Lawrence equalised in the first half, but from that point on, the Ligue 1 outfit pulled clear and deservedly picked up all three points.
Phillipe Clement
It was an awful night for Clement and his players, with the Belgian no doubt likely to find himself under more pressure to keep his job, following a hit-and-miss start to the season across all competitions.
Rangers are already five points adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, and only narrowly won 1-0 at home to Hibernian last weekend, with the visitors missing a penalty.
Rangers star's performance vs Lyon slammed
There were so many players who underperformed for the Gers against Lyon, but one individual who has come in for more criticism than most is James Tavernier.
The Rangers captain was miles below his best, with Rangers News even giving him a 2/10 player rating, claiming he was given a “torrid time” throughout the night.
Meanwhile, The Scotsman could only hand him a four, saying: “Missed a very early chance that ought to have put Rangers in front. Struggled to deal with the sheer pace and trickery of the Lyon backline and was beaten by Fofana at the far post for Lyon’s fourth goal. Replaced on hour mark by Kasanwirjo.”
Give Me Sport said there were “question marks” around his defending while Glasgow World handed him a 3/10: “Poor positioning and too slow to react at the back post for Fofana to net Lyon’s fourth. Unable to keep tabs on Fofana and given the run-around all evening.”
Tavernier has been an unbelievable servant for Rangers down the years, producing remarkable levels of consistency and end product going forward, but the negativity towards him after the Lyon defeat feels warranted. The £30,000-a-week ace was so poor that he was substituted on the hour mark, but he still had time to lose possession on 12 different occasions, highlighting his wasteful nature on the ball, which can be punished in European competition.
Tavernier also completed just 70% of his passes and made zero tackles or clearances, as well as being dribbled past once, with his defensive frailties exposed at times. Every player has an off day and this was one such occasion for Tavernier, and the key now is for him to show his leadership and bounce back this weekend, with Rangers hosting St Johnstone in the league on Sunday night.

At 32, there will inevitably be some supporters who will claim that the Englishman’s best days are now behind him, and it is up to the Gers skipper to prove them wrong.
Half-centuries for Ollie Robinson, Jack Leaning and Darren Stevens take hosts into lead
ECB Reporters' Network05-Sep-2021Kent lead Worcestershire by 51 runs in their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Canterbury, reaching 184 for 4 at stumps on day one.Nathan Gilchrist took a career-best 5 for 38 and Matt Milnes 4 for 35 as Worcestershire were all out for 133, Ben Cox their top scorer with 41 not out. Darren Stevens and Jack Leaning were unbeaten on 56 and 52 respectively at the close, after Ollie Robinson hit 50.Dillon Pennington took 3 for 39, but after reducing Kent to 22 for 3, Worcestershire’s bowlers toiled. The hosts won the toss and chose to bowl in broad sunshine, a decision instantly vindicated as Milnes removed Daryl Mitchell with the fifth ball of the morning, caught by a diving Jordan Cox in the slips for 4.Milnes then bowled Jake Libby for 2 before he had Tom Fell caught behind for 3 and Brett D’Oliveira lbw for 1. When Gilchrist bowled Jack Haynes for 8 the visitors were reeling on 32 for 5 and although Ed Barnard looked well set, he was caught behind off Stevens for 25.Joe Leach and Cox steered Worcestershire to 91 for 6 at lunch, during which Milnes became the 220th Kent player to be awarded a county cap.The visitors made a steady start to the afternoon session only for Gilchrist to take the final four wickets for 14 runs. Leach’s off stump was pinged back for 38 and two balls later Josh Baker was bowled for a duck after a hideous leave. Pennington was then lbw for 3 and Adam Finch bowled for 2, giving Gilchrist his first five-wicket haul in red-ball cricket.Kent’s reply started shakily with Pennington removing both openers cheaply, Zak Crawley caught behind for 4 and Jordan Cox caught by Baker for 1. Joe Denly was then lbw to Leach for 9 but Leaning and Robinson put on 75 for the next wicket before the latter was caught behind off Pennington.Stevens joined Leaning and steered Kent past Worcestershire’s first-innings total before reaching his 50 from with a single off Baker. Leaning cut Finch for four to reach his half-century, putting Kent in a dominant position at the end of day one.Following the conclusion of India’s second innings at The Oval, Sam Billings has been released from England duty and will be able to bat, replacing Marcus O’Riordan.
In case you haven’t heard, UEFA has made massive changes to the Champions League. They have seen the end of the group stage as we know it, as well as the introduction of four extra teams to the league phase that replaces it.
It is the biggest shake-up to the format of the competition since the discontinuation of the second group stage, which was last used in 2002/03. Therefore, it may be overdue a change – not that there was anything necessarily wrong with the outgoing format.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa are all involved as 36 teams do battle in the new-look final tournament. It means more games, more different opponents, and UEFA hopes there will be more drama to go along with it. But will it live up to the billing?
Here is Football FanCast’s rundown of how it’ll work and what you can expect to change when the new format comes into effect.
The top Champions League goalscorers of all time
Who has been the best in front of goal in the famous club competition?
ByCharlie Smith May 14, 2025 How the 2024/25 Champions League will work
The biggest change is that UEFA is dropping the group stage. Instead of eight groups of four teams, there will be a single league of 36 teams, with each team playing eight times against eight different opponents – two teams from each of the four pots – with four at home and four away.
The eight teams who finish with the most points will qualify for the round of 16. Those placed from 9th-24th will enter a two-legged play-off round to determine the other eight teams. The 12 bottom clubs will all be eliminated – with no more dropping down in the Europa League.
Incidentally, both the Europa League and Conference League will undergo similar changes, with clubs no longer able to play in different competitions during the same campaign.
Once the round of 16 starts, the format reverts to normal – two-legged ties until the final, with no use of away goals throughout.
Looking at the schedule in the table below, the key differences are the two league phase matchdays in the new year, with the 36 qualified teams guaranteed to be playing European football until late January – while the last of these is a single date rather than split over Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
This is presumably to ensure maximum carnage as teams scrap for the eight automatic knockout-round slots, with similar likely as sides look to avoid instant elimination.

How to qualify for the Champions League
Aston-Villa-Emery-Watkins-Champions-League
With the league phase involving 36 teams, there are four more places up for grabs for the final tournament.
The qualification process is largely untouched, with the reigning champions and Europa League winners still getting places if they haven’t already qualified, but four extra paths needed to be created.
One extra place now goes to the fifth-ranked nation in UEFA’s coefficient standings, which is France, meaning four Ligue 1 clubs can enter the competition through the league. There’s also an extra place up for grabs in the ‘Champions Path’ qualifying rounds for nations ranked 11th through 55th.
The other two places are awarded to the countries that collectively achieve the best results in the previous season’s competition, which is determined by adding up coefficient points and dividing them by the number of participating teams from that country.
This year, Italy and Germany grabbed those places – known as European Performance Spots – with Bologna and last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund, the fortunate recipients.

This leaves seven more slots to be filled via the play-off rounds.

2024/25 Champions League draw procedure & pots
With more teams and a brand-new league phase, changes have had to be made to the draw procedure as well. Supporters who put themselves through the tenuous group stage draw ceremony every year may have been delighted by the news that the fixtures will be determined by a computer from now on, removing the need for a lengthy match-making process.
UEFA confirmed that due to the complexities of the new format, it would take too long to draw the fixtures manually. This saw fewer balls being unscrewed and more fixtures being allocated at the push of a button. But how does the draw actually work?
Teams were allocated into four pots as usual – with nine slots now available in each one. Teams will be drawn randomly from Pot 1, at which point the computer will determine their opponents. Every team will face two opponents from each pot, regardless of which one they are in. The computer will also determine which games are played home and away.
As in previous years, there is national protection during the league phase, though teams from the same association will be able to face each other from the last 16 onwards – a round earlier than usual.
Another alteration to the draw schedule sees a draw from the last-16 stage determining the remaining teams’ path to the final, meaning there is no need for another draw come the quarter-finals.

How to watch the Champions League on UK TV
This year, live coverage will be shown on TNT Sports and Amazon, with the latter securing a TV deal in 2022 handing them the rights to 17 live matches on Tuesday nights during the season, of which they have first pick.
BBC Sport will also be airing a midweek edition of Match of the Day throughout the campaign. The first episode was hosted by Jason Mohammad alongside pundits Joe Hart, Julien Laurens and Stephen Warnock.
Champions League draw dates
These are the remaining dates for your diary if you don’t want to miss a thing. As mentioned, there are only two draws following the completion of the league phase; one for the knockout play-off round, and another for the rest of the knockout stages. Positions in the league are set to determine a team’s path to the final, which will be mapped out in full at the last-16 stage instead of the quarter-finals as in previous years.

This is the current shape of the new-look league table – which, as explained earlier, consists of all 36 clubs vying for 8 automatic last-16 berths, with spots available in the play-off round for those who finish between 9th and 24th.
Arsenal were the early headline-makers of Matchday 2, with the Gunners overcoming Paris Saint-Germain in a heavyweight clash at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
Celtic came crashing back down to earth following their big win on the opening night as Borussia Dortmund thumped them 7-1 in Germany, while Manchester City ran out easy winners away at Slovan Bratislava, who have now endured two heavy defeats from British opposition.
Although it is still early days, Stade Brest have perhaps made the most surprising start so far with two wins from two on their CL debut, while Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona and Inter were Tuesday’s other winners on MD2.

The Gunners were facing calls for additions to be made in the final third of the field prior to losing Brazil international forward Gabriel Jesus. Confirmation that the South American has suffered season-ending knee ligament damage has heightened the need to get fresh bodies on board.

Arsenal were able to find two goals in their latest derby date with north London rivals Tottenham, as Gabriel Magalhaes forced Dominic Solanke to deflect into his own net and Leandro Trossard drilled home what proved to be the winner, but more firepower is required in order to land the Premier League title.
WHAT ARTETA SAID
Arteta has now conceded as much, telling when asked if he wants to bring in another attacker: “Yes, for sure. Because we lost two players, big players, Bukayo [Saka] – that can be out for up to three months, so that’s a long time – and Gabby [Jesus], that’s going to be out for a long, long, long time. We are going to try, for sure. We are actively looking at. I think we have lost two very important players, we have 14 players in the squad, and we play every three days. We will try, but let’s see who we can get.”
