Mushfiqur Rahim's break in doubt due to Australia series quarantine rules

He might have to stay on in the team’s bubble in Zimbabwe to be eligible for the full series

Mohammad Isam13-Jul-2021Mushfiqur Rahim could be one of two players asked to stay back with the Bangladesh contingent after their ODI series against Zimbabwe, to avoid a longer quarantine period ahead of their T20I series against Australia next month. Rahim had been granted a leave by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after he had requested to skip the T20Is against Zimbabwe. The BCB and Cricket Australia (CA) had agreed on the condition that both sets of players must be in quarantine ten days before entering the tour’s bio-bubble in Dhaka. Being in the Harare bio-bubble counts as being in this quarantine, which means Rahim’s personal break – which was supposed to be from July 22 – wouldn’t allow him to enter the Bangladesh-Australia bio-bubble until the day of the first T20I between the two sides, proposed to be in the first week of August.Related

Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that they have to keep the Australia series quarantine in mind, but said a final decision will be taken after discussions with the team management in Harare. Any player on the current Zimbabwe tour who wants to be available for the full Australia series has to remain in Zimbabwe till July 27.”Everyone has to be in quarantine for ten plays to play in the Australia series,” Abedin told ESPNcricinfo. “We have planned to keep two players from the ODI side that’s playing against Zimbabwe, with the T20I side, just in case. We are not taking any chances because there is always the chance of someone getting sick.”After discussion with the team management, we will finalise on July 15 about whether Mushfiq will remain in Zimbabwe. Mushfiq wanted a break from the bio-bubble which is completely understandable. It is very difficult to live inside a bio-bubble. Even we have got tired staying at home, and imagine how the players feel being in hotels for such long periods.”Bangladesh play the ODI series against Zimbabwe from July 16 to 20. The T20Is are from July 23 to 27, and the return flight will bring them home on July 29. Australia, currently in the West Indies, are likely to arrive in Dhaka on July 27 after their last match on that tour on July 25.Apart from the ten-day quarantine, the BCB have already agreed to other requests from, CA including the visitors avoiding the airport hallrooms, stricter control in the team hotel, and playing all five T20Is in Dhaka.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lopetegui has struggled throughout his time at the London Stadium and his side sit eight points clear of the relegation zone. Bowen has scored five goals and registered four assists in 19 games. The Hammers have also been rocked by Michail Antonio's injury; the Jamaica international has been discharged from hospital after a horror car accident.

West Ham play Manchester City on January 4. Pep Guardiola's side will be desperate for a win, as they lie sixth in the table having won only one of their last five games.

Diego Leon: The ultra-athletic, goal-scoring teenager who Man Utd believe can solve their full-back woes

The 17-year-old Paraguayan is the latest talented youngster the Red Devils have snapped up as part of INEOS' long-term vision

Ever since Patrice Evra left the club in 2014, Manchester United have had a problem at left-back. The position has become so neglected that the team have essentially been operating without one for the last 12 months, with Tyrell Malacia struggling to recover from two nightmare knee surgeries while Luke Shaw is perpetually injured.

Being so ill-equipped in such a key area has hurt the team deeply, and was a big factor in them enduring their worst-ever Premier League finish last season, as well as their dismal current campaign. Diogo Dalot has had to deputise on the left when he is much better suited to the right, and United's need to address their dearth of left backs has been heightened by Ruben Amorim's use of a back three and wing-backs, which places a greater physical demand on those chosen for the role.

Thankfully, the club have prioritised one left-back who they believe will be one of the stars of the future in Diego Leon, the Paraguayan teenager who is blazing a trail in his first season in professional football with Cerro Porteno and who has agreed to join United in the summer. The 17-year old is a physical specimen who has the exact attributes to shine in Amorim's side, a powerful and ambitious player capable of shuttling up and down the flank while providing a real threat.

Leon is the latest youngster United have signed on the cheap after plucking Chido Obi-Martin from Arsenal and wrapping up a deal for Mali Under-17s star Sekou Kone last year, having had great success bringing in Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid in 2020.

GOAL has the lowdown on the player who is set to become the first signing of the Amorim era, a player who could become a crucial part of the Portuguese's project for years to come:

Where it all began

Leon grew up in the Paraguayan city of Yguazu, near the borders of Argentina and Brazil and close to the iconic Iguazu waterfalls. But like many young South American footballers, his family often struggled to make ends meet.

His mother Brigida Blanco told Cerro Porteno's official media: "We often didn't have money to buy him a ball, so he'd grab a piece of fabric, roll it up and play with it. He would always say, 'one day I'm going to play for Cerro', and now he's doing it."

Leon joined Cerro Porteno's academy at U14 level and was called up to the senior team last year for their mid-season training camp in Malaga.

AdvertisementThe big break

Leon made his first-team debut in the opening game of the 2024 Clausara season against Sportivo Ameliano, and afterwards confessed that he was so excited he couldn't sleep. Despite the sleepless night, his first game could hardly have gone better as he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win, creeping in at the back post to head home.

He scored again in his third game as a professional against General Caballero JLM with a strike that really made people sit up and notice, surging forward through the middle of the pitch, beating one defender and then smashing the ball into the net from just outside the area.

How it's going

Despite his young age, Leon locked down his place in the Cerro Porteno side, starting 18 of the team's 22 league games in the Clausura. A few weeks after making his debut, he was named among the top 10 full-backs under the age of 21 by the CIES Football Observatory, and it did not take long for his name to be linked with Europe's top sides.

Arsenal entered talks with Cerro Porteno over signing him in December, but United beat the Gunners to the punch, agreeing an initial fee of $4m (£3.2m) plus a potential $4.5m in add-ons.

Biggest strengths

Described as a "strapping lad" by South American football expert Tim Vickery, Leon does not look like a 17-year-old at all (aside from his braces) due to his outstanding physical prowess. He is pacey and powerful, but he also has impressive technical ability, being adept at keeping the ball under control while running at breakneck speed.

He is an attacking full-back renowned for getting into the final third, knocking in crosses and also getting on the end of them.

Aston Villa battling Tottenham to sign "special" £124k-p/w Serie A winner

Looking to make another statement signing, Aston Villa are now reportedly battling Tottenham Hotspur to sign a Serie A winner who would complete Unai Emery’s attack once and for all.

Aston Villa transfer news

As proved in the summer, it’s not just on the pitch that the Premier League’s top six need to watch out for Aston Villa, with their work in the transfer market among the best in Europe in the previous window. The Villans welcomed Amadou Onana to instantly replace the departed Douglas Luiz, whilst also signing the likes of Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley.

Meanwhile, the Midlands club also crucially kept hold of Jhon Duran amid interest from West Ham United. And if there were any doubts over whether the forward can challenge Ollie Watkins for a starting place in Emery’s frontline, then five goals in seven games in all competitions has quickly put those concerns to rest.

With Watkins and Duran to choose from, it should be safe to assume that the Villans are now settled on their attacking options, but reports suggest that they could still add one more star man to complete their attack.

According to reports in Spain, Aston Villa are now battling Tottenham Hotspur to sign Marcus Thuram from Inter Milan, whose current stance is that the £124,000-a-week star is not for sale.

Aston Villa thought they may have the next Messi, then he left for just £7m

He was dubbed the king of speed…

ByConnor Holden Sep 27, 2024

Whether the lure of Premier League football convinces the forward to complete such a move remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that he would make quite the impact at Villa Park.

Arriving at Inter Milan last summer, Thuram instantly earned a place in the history books alongside the rest of his teammates by winning the Serie A in dominant fashion. Now, two years later, he could be on his way to England’s top flight in a 2025 move.

"Special" Thuram would complete Aston Villa attack

As things stand, the Premier League is still watching on and waiting to see if Aston Villa’s top four finish last time out was a mere one-off, but if the Villans’ business is anything to go by, they should be in and around the Champions League places for years to come. And adding Thuram may even take Emery’s side up another level entirely.

Of course, handing all three players the game time that they need would be an almost impossible task, but if Emery found a way to keep them all happy, then he’d have one of the most dangerous attacking trios in the Premier League.

Alas, it will be difficult to convince Inter to part ways with their star striker who has earned such high praise in Italy, including from teammate Benjamin Pavard. The French full-back dubbed Thuram “special” when speaking about how quickly his countryman settled into life in the Serie A last season.

Dinesh Chandimal seeks clarity from Sri Lanka Cricket about international future

Sri Lanka batter Dinesh Chandimal has asked SLC and its technical committee for clarity about his future in the national team.In a letter addressed to the head of the technical committee Aravinda de Silva, which also has several SLC officials copied, Chandimal asked for “an opportunity to meet with you and the respected committees to discuss my future, in playing cricket for Sri Lanka”. This letter comes in the wake of news that Angelo Mathews is considering retirement, and only months after Thisara Perera announced his own retirement.Essentially, this is more of a fallout from the recent contracts saga. SLC’s technical committee – which comprises de Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Roshan Mahanama – had been instrumental in devising a new contracts scheme, which proved to be unpopular with the senior players in particular. After a long contracts stand-off, though, SLC withdrew the annual contracts they had offered basically as a punishment for rejecting the contracts in the first place, which means that cricketers who mostly play Tests – such as Chandimal or Dimuth Karunaratne – would be left without income from the board for the majority of this year.Related

  • Dinesh Chandimal to appear for Bhairahawa Gladiators in Nepal's Everest Premier League

  • Disillusioned Mathews considers international retirement

  • Sri Lanka players agree to tour England without contracts

  • Mathews only one to decline contract offer for India series

  • SL players 'not in agreement to sign unfair contracts'

They are also not contractually bound to the board at present, and several of those uncontracted players are understood to be considering opportunities overseas. In his letter, Chandimal outlined his playing statistics across all three formats, and compared his numbers with those of former greats before the age of 30, though he is himself 31. He then made the point that “the past greats of Sri Lanka cricket have shown that 2nd half of the career is where greater performances are made”, before asking “why are those very people not seeing the value at this juncture, in me?””My performance statistics and my health statistics indicate I am more than capable of performing at the highest level at the moment,” the letter said.At present, Chandimal’s place in any of Sri Lanka’s XIs is not assured. Under Mickey Arthur, Sri Lanka have tended not to pick him for limited-overs cricket due to his modest strike rate. His overall Test numbers are better than most of his team-mates’, but even in that format he had been dropped from the XI for Sri Lanka’s most recent series against Bangladesh. Chandimal last made a Test century in mid-2018, and has averaged 22.43 across 25 innings since.Excerpts from Chandimal’s letter:

Derby could sign "incredible" free agent who’s a dream for Mendez-Laing

Derby County finally announced themselves to the Championship on their return to the second tier versus Bristol City, as Paul Warne's Rams emphatically put Bristol City to the sword 3-0 last time out.

The only other victory this season Derby had collected in the league was a slender 1-0 win when Warne's men faced off against Michael Carrick's tricky Middlesbrough outfit, but this more recent three points in front of the home masses at Pride Park was way more of a breeze.

Derby will hope they can pick up more stylish victories when the international break is over and done with, knowing that Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has a lot more to give the newly promoted outfit.

Mendez-Laing this season so far

The former Cardiff City man was instrumental last season in Derby winning promotion back up to the Championship via the top two, with the experienced head setting League One alight with his sublime performances.

The 32-year-old attacker would amass a ridiculous nine goals and 16 assists in league action, with his importance to the cause only heightened moving up a league, when you consider his previous nous at the tricky level.

He already has two assists next to his name from Derby's opening four league clashes, but both of those goal contributions came on the opening night away at Blackburn Rovers, with nothing falling his way since.

That isn't to say Mendez-Laing didn't bust a gut for his side in the convincing 3-0 success over the Robins, with the skilful Rams number 11 even hitting the woodwork from his bright 74 minutes on the Pride Park turf, but the goals and assists just haven't been as free flowing as his standout season in League One.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Warne could be tempted to explore the free agent market to try and give Mendez-Laing a new exciting partner down the left, even with recent developments suggesting that the Derby boss would have to ditch a member of his 25-man squad to accommodate a new acquisition.

With Craig Forsyth now 35 years of age and very much in the twilight stages of his career, a new left-back might well be on the former Rotherham United manager's mind regardless, gifting the Rams another face to compete with Callum Elder who could get even more out of their 32-year-old star-man.

Why Derby should consider Brandon Williams

Brandon Williams could well be the man Derby desire to bolster their numbers in the left-back spot, away from over-relying on their current Australian first-teamer.

The ex-Manchester United youth product is still on the hunt for a new club after being released by the Red Devils this summer, which might well be seen as a surprise when you take into account his memorable loan stint with Ipswich last season.

Williams' whirlwind spell at Portman Road would see him score two goals from just 15 appearances as a livewire option down the left – which included the outrageous solo strike above versus Preston North End – with his willingness to launch into duels also a major plus, winning 4.7 of them on average per match.

Kieran McKenna, who also had Williams under his wing when he was a coach at Man United before taking on the Tractor Boys job, would describe the 24-year-old's moment of magic against Preston as "incredible", whilst also applauding his drive and determination away from the outrageous goal.

He could be utilised as an impact subsitute option, therefore, when teams in the second tier are flagging and Derby want to expose that, with only eight starts handed to him in Suffolk despite McKenna's glowing words.

Capable of also playing at the right-back spot if needed, Williams' constant energy and bite could get more out of Mendez-Laing, who will want to continue to see out his playing days in Derbyshire with a bang.

Derby hit gold on amazing star who's worth more than Cashin & Mendez-Laing

Derby County fans will see this former star in action next season against the Rams.

Test cricket emerges from shadow of the Hundred as India eye England glory again

Big picture

It’s funny to think that a series of this magnitude – with these teams and these players – has flown under the radar over the last month. Relatively speaking.Trent Bridge was doused in the Hundred’s branding a couple of days ahead of the first Test, and even when it’s not on, the IPL has influenced cricket scheduling across the world, including pushing an England tour of Bangladesh 18 months into the future. That the ECB’s and the BCCI’s premium products will hold sway in this day and age is understandable, perhaps, but it is hard to imagine this series won’t be front and centre when it kicks off on Wednesday.Related

  • Kohli: Challenge is 'wanting to win in conditions which are not ours'

  • Joe Root on Ben Stokes: 'I just want my friend to be okay'

  • Concussion rules Mayank Agarwal out of first Test

  • Ben Stokes to miss India series, takes an 'indefinite break'

For one, it will be played to a full house. For another, it’s rare that a team can lose a series 3-1 and have a chance at a comeback in the same year – over five Tests, no less. England’s defeat in India this year meant the end of their WTC ambitions. Now, it’s a chance to set the tone early against the runners-up, who have managed two wins in their last three tours of England.India’s leadership has argued that the 4-1 scoreline on their 2018 tour was not an accurate reflection of how closely fought the series was, and upon that will rest their approach this time around. In the time since, this is a squad that has grown in depth and shown it can find ways to win overseas; they haven’t yet done it in swing-friendly conditions, however, and it’s a challenge that Virat Kohli said his team is craving.1:47

Anderson vs Kohli? Pant vs Buttler? And who will win the series?

They won’t be the only ones. England are without Ben Stokes, which could potentially pave the way for Sam Curran to be a designated gamechanger, as opposed to the surprise package he proved to be in 2018. Both sides also have team compositions to figure out, and top-order batters who are either new, or returning, or searching for form. Throw that together with two of the best fast-bowling line-ups over a month-and-some of cricket, and we could have a series for the ages.

Form guide

England LDLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India LWWWL

In the spotlight

Sam Curran told ESPNcricinfo that Stokes is someone he looks to emulate, and this series will bring him both the opportunities and some of the heft that comes with being Stokes. There is perhaps no better replacement in the England roster as they attempt to fill such a role – Curran is only 23 but has already built a reputation for making things happen, across formats, and in multiple roles. There will be eyes on him, and not just from English supporters; the wounds he inflicted on the Indian team in 2018, no doubt, continue to linger.0:50

Ian Bell: Curran would do Stokes’ role for me

KL Rahul‘s last big moment as a Test opener came in the last Test of the 2018 series. Following that 149 at The Oval, it has been a wobbly, uncertain career in red-ball cricket even as he has established himself as a limited-overs giant in Indian cricket. He was thought to be on this tour primarily as a middle-order option, but injuries to the main openers and good form in the warm-up games in Durham could mean Rahul comes back in as an opener in what will be his first game of competitive first-class cricket since the Ranji Trophy semi-final in March 2020 [he played the three-day tour game against County Select XI too].

Team news

England are almost certain to play four fast bowlers, and the batting talents of both Curran and Ollie Robinson mean they could be tempted to fit Jack Leach in there for a five-pronged attack. Ollie Pope could be a doubt after his injured quadriceps suffered a reaction to training, putting Jonny Bairstow potentially in line for a return to Test cricket.England (possible): 1 Rory Burns, 2 Dom Sibley, 3 Zak Crawley, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ollie Pope/Jonny Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Sam Curran, 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James AndersonMore than anything else, India would be thinking about who slots in at No. 7. Ravindra Jadeja’s rise as a reliable batter in the format, alongside his runs during the warm-up games, would make him frontrunner for No. 7. It’s also difficult to imagine that India would drop R Ashwin in the sort of form he has been in, and so it’s the same quandary for India as they had during the WTC final; two spinners or one spinner and Shardul Thakur? The former beefs up a thin lower order, the latter keeps India’s frontline seamers fresher.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 KL Rahul/Abhimanyu Easwaran, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Jasprit Bumrah2:00

Laxman: Would pick KL Rahul to open alongside Rohit Sharma

Pitch and conditions

It has been cloudy, but warm, in the lead up to the first Test. Temperatures are expected to hover in the high teens. The pitches in the square have been green but have shown signs of getting drier and changing colour.

Stats and trivia

  • James Anderson is three wickets away from overtaking Anil Kumble’s 619.
  • India’s last three five-match series have all been against England.

Quotes

“I think it’s a tricky one because there is a bit of grass on it but it’s definitely changed colour in the last few days, it’s starting to turn a bit brown as well. So I’m sure there will be a spinner in our 12 for tomorrow.”
“I don’t really believe that some series matter more than the others, because then you’re really picking and choosing what you want to do. And that’s not being honest to the game in my opinion. So any match that you play for your country, and any series, is as important as any other series that you play around the world. And for us it’s wanting difficult cricket, wanting tough cricket. And wanting to win in conditions which are not ours.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Jaedyn Shaw, 20, one of the most talented young stars in American soccer, is officially on the move in one of the NWSL's most significant trades.

The North Carolina Courage have acquired U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Jaedyn Shaw via trade with San Diego Wave FC, the clubs announced Tuesday. Shaw is under contract through the 2026 NWSL season.

In exchange for the rising international star, the Wave will receive $300,000 in allocation money, an international spot for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and $150,000 in intraleague transfer fees. The deal includes performance-based incentives, with the Courage potentially sending up to $75,000 in additional allocation money in exchange for up to $150,000 in intraleague transfer fees.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Shaw is one of the USWNT's brightest prospects, having already proven herself as a dynamic attacker on the international level despite her age. The 20-year-old forward has eight goals in 21 USWNT caps, having only made her debut in October 2023. She was a member of the USWNT's gold medal squad at the Olympics, but did not play due to injury.

On the club level, Shaw turned professional as a 17-year-old in 2022, making her the NWSL's second-youngest player at the time. Able to play as a No. 10, winger or as a false-nine, Shaw scored 14 goals in 61 games with the Wave, while earning a Best XI selection in 2023.

The trade will surely send shockwaves through the NWSL. The Courage have now acquired a legitimate star after finishing fifth last season before falling to the Kansas City Current in the opening round of the postseason.

  • WHAT SHAW SAID

“I am so grateful to be here and to call North Carolina home. I’m excited to experience a new style of play and to learn and grow alongside amazing players and coaches. I can’t wait to get to work and help bring another championship to Courage Country,” Shaw said in a statement.

    WHAT THE COURAGE SAID

“Bringing Jaedyn here is a great day for our club. She is someone who has every tool at such a young age and will be a key part of our club. Her quality on the ball, both in possession and on the dribble, along with her levels in and around the box can unlock opposition. She suits our style of play and our supporters will be able to see one of the top young talents every week. We can’t wait to welcome this truly gifted player and even better person to our team. It’s a great day for us and we look forward to having Jaedyn in Courage Country,” said Courage Head Coach Sean Nahas in a statement.
