Liverpool now register interest in "wonderful" Real Madrid target for Slot

Looking ahead to the future, Liverpool have reportedly registered their interest in signing one particular Real Madrid target who is on course to become an undeniable star.

Liverpool transfer news

If there were any concerns that the Reds would fall away in the Premier League following Jurgen Klopp's departure, then those have been significantly eased by Arne Slot and the start his side have made this season. Earning maximum points without conceding once in a run that includes a 3-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Dutchman may just be getting started.

As the former Feyenoord boss continues to get settled, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes may start to think about the 2025 transfer windows, in which Liverpool could be far busier than they were in a relatively quiet summer.

The rumours certainly suggest that's the case too. The Reds have already been linked to the likes of Angel Gomes, who would be making quite the controversial move as a Manchester United academy graduate. The England international has recently returned to the spotlight once again after making his Three Lions debut.

With his contract coming to an end next summer, the deal would certainly make sense, but Gomes isn't the only midfielder that those at Anfield reportedly have their eye on.

According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool have registered their interest in signing Chris Rigg from Sunderland alongside Manchester City and Chelsea, whilst Real Madrid have also been linked with a move.

Such interest should come as little surprise too. Rigg, just 17 years old, is already a consistent starter at the Stadium of Light and looks set to be the next best player in the Championship, potentially following in Jude Bellingham's footsteps in the process.

Liverpool, however, will seemingly be looking to deny Real Madrid the chance to sign yet another future star in a battle that the Reds are all too familiar with.

"Wonderful" Rigg is a future star

The way he has maintained his place in a Sunderland side who sit top of the Championship under new boss Regis Le Bris makes it difficult to believe that Rigg is still just 17 years old. The midfielder instantly stands out among his teammates as a star in the making and one destined for the very top. It's potential that former boss Tony Mowbray saw and potential that the rest of English football is now seeing.

Mowbray previously told Sunderland's official website, via Chronicle Live: "Chris Rigg is pushing really hard for a starting place in our team I would suggest, and I don’t say that lightly, he’s a 16-year-old boy. He knows where the goal is and wants to run forward, he’s got energy to burn and can keep running all day.

"He looks you in the eye and wants to please and do what you want him to do. He should have scored again to be honest, if he’d trusted his right foot he would have scored again.

Rigg is doing really well and is a real positive for our football club. I’m eulogising about him there, we shouldn’t overly build him up. He’s still a young boy but he has wonderful qualities and wonderful attributes.”

Man City ready to take £13m hit to sell star Pep called one of world’s best

Manchester City are reportedly willing to sell a current Etihad ace who Pep Guardiola has described as "one of the best players in the world".

Man City transfer news as Gundogan returns

The Premier League champions are still in the market for potential signings this week, prior to the summer transfer window slamming shut. There has been a significant development at the Etihad in recent days, with Ilkay Gundogan back at the club after a short spell at Barcelona.

The 33-year-old was such an influential figure during his first stint at City, most famously scoring the league-clinching goal at home to Aston Villa back in 2021/22, and while his very best days could arguably be behind him, many supporters will be delighted to see him back.

Away from the Gundogan news, the Cityzens are still being linked with possible additions in the next few days, with Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi perhaps emerging as a surprise target, being seen as a good foil for Erling Haaland in attack. Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer of the Japanese attacker.

Crystal Palace and England maestro Eberechi Eze has also been back to seal a summer move to City, with the Eagles hero a huge talent who could add creativity and end product in attacking areas. His current club will be desperate to keep hold of him, however, having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich and with Marc Guehi a continued target for Newcastle United.

Man City happy to sell £53m midfielder

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Manchester City are happy to sell midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer, following the return of Gundogan. The situation makes Nunes an expendable figure moving forward, and the Sky Blues are "willing to accept an offer" of £40m or a loan deal for the Portugal international despite spending £53m on his signature.

Selling Nunes does feel like the right decision by City now that Gundogan is back in the fold, with the former Wolves man struggling to set the world alight ever since joining. The £130,000-a-week ace is clearly a big talent, which is summed up by the fact that Guardiola called him "one of the best players in the world today" before he moved to the Etihad, having come up against him for Sporting CP in the Champions League.

Nunes has only featured for one minute of action in his side's first two Premier League matches this season, and with Gundogan now providing further competition for places, it is hard not to see him warming the substitutes' bench for much of the season.

The 25-year-old will surely feel that a move away would be beneficial to him, rather than wasting the best years of his career, so the best outcome for all parties would be to see an exit sealed before the end of deadline day on Friday, even if it's a loan switch to begin with.

Deal back on: Ipswich chase last gasp swoop for "amazing" Foster upgrade

Ipswich Town will now be preparing for their third Premier League clash of the season already against Fulham, even as the many narratives from transfer deadline day are playing out today.

The Tractor Boys' main priority as the clock ticks down towards the transfer window shutting seems to be centring in on getting a new striker in through the door, with a late move for Lyle Foster to join from Burnley breaking down for Kieran McKenna's men.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster.

Now, however, an old deal looks to be back on as a result of Foster's switch going awry, with Ipswich up against it in trying to get this man through the door before the 11pm cut-off point.

Ipswich's search for a striker

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via his social media, a move is now back in motion for Armando Broja to join the ranks at Portman Road, having seen an earlier switch collapse.

Romano has explained that a move has been resurrected as the Tractor Boys could be set to get a better deal out of the Blues for the Albanian centre-forward now than the earlier one, owing to his physical conditions leading to a medical being failed last time around, with the fee now allegedly dropping down from a bumper £30m.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

This move could still break down once more with Ipswich and Chelsea only in talks currently, but if a deal were to take place between now and the window slamming shut, the 22-year-old would be seen as an upgrade on Foster as the South African forward is arguably even more goal-shy than Broja.

What Broja could offer Ipswich

The Chelsea outcast would really welcome a new location to call home in the form of Ipswich if a last-gasp move was to get off the ground, with the reserve Blues attacker in need of finding his shooting boots again.

Last campaign, when out on loan at Chelsea's near neighbours Fulham, Broja would regularly fire blanks, with zero goals managed from eight forgettable appearances for the Cottagers.

But, looking at the table above, the 6 foot 3 forward has had encouraging spells in front of goal across his senior career away from his bruising time at Craven Cottage, with his stint at St. Mary's particularly sticking out.

Broja would net six of his nine Saints goals in top-flight action for Southampton, bettering Foster's record for the Clarets last season, with the South African attacker managing five strikes from 24 league clashes.

With former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino stating that Broja possessed "amazing" potential to be a top star one day, the 22-year-old will hope he can excel under McKenna's watchful eye instead, with the Tractor Boys on the hunt for a new centre-forward owing to George Hirst still being sidelined after a pre-season injury.

Broja could give Ipswich something different away from the likes of ex-Manchester City youngster Liam Delap, with his 6 foot 3 frame gifting the Tractor Boys a potentially assertive forward option, whilst the lofty striker also boasts a better career goalscoring resume than Foster has managed.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

The Burnley striker has found the back of the net 24 times playing in countries such as Belgium and Portugal, alongside England, whilst Broja comes up trumps with a superior 44 strikes, if you include his explosive time playing in the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge.

Ipswich will be taking a gamble securing a deal for Broja, especially with his sobering loan stint with Fulham still being fresh, but it could pay off to be a risk that was worth pursuing.

Mainoo dropped, academy duo earn 1st start: Predicted Man Utd XI v Barnsley

After a long international break in which Manchester United were forced to sit on back-to-back losses against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, they came back with a win over the weekend.

The opposition may have only been Southampton, but Erik ten Hag’s side ensured it wasn’t three losses on the bounce on Saturday as they weathered the hosts’ early pressure to emerge 3-0 victors.

The three-time European champions still look some way off being a free-flowing team capable of beating the Premier League’s big boys, but it was certainly a step in the right direction, and it might have eased the pressure on the manager somewhat.

However, with the season in full swing, the Red Devils must prepare for another match tomorrow night, as they play host to League One side Barnsley in the League Cup.

The level of competition means Ten Hag can afford to make several changes, and due to the number of games coming up, he could make up to eight and, in the process, hand an academy gem his first start.

1 GK – Altay Bayındır

So, starting between the sticks, we come to our first change as Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır comes in for Andre Onana.

As with most of them in this XI, this change is more about giving Ten Hag’s fringe players a chance to play than anything else.

This would be Bayındır’s second appearance for the Red Devils, but he’s far from inexperienced, with ten caps for Turkey and 145 appearances for Fenerbahçe under his belt.

2 RB – Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot for Manchester United

Diogo Dalot is staying in the right-back position.

The Portuguese international didn’t have a great game against the Saints on Saturday.

ESPN’s Adam Brown gave him just a 5/10 for his ‘careless challenge’ that led to the home side’s penalty, but he was a reliable performer last season and should play again tomorrow night.

3 CB – Harry Maguire

The first entre-back position brings the second change as Harry Maguire comes in for new boy Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutchman put in a fine performance on Saturday but came off with five minutes to go with cramp, later saying, “it’s the first time I think in five months that I played three times in a row.”

So, for a game against League One opposition, Ten Hag should do the sensible thing, rest his new star defender, and play the more-than-capable Maguire, who should hopefully be fit after limping somewhat himself, in the final moments against Southampton.

4 CB – Johnny Evans

It’s the same story in the other centre-back position, as the recently returned Lisandro Martínez makes way for veteran defender Jonny Evans.

The Northern Irishman may be 36, and may have almost quit over the summer break, but he has proven himself to still be a useful player, and should be fine against the Tykes.

5 LB – Harry Amass

The final position in the defence brings us to the first full debut in the team, as 17-year-old Harry Amass comes in for summer signing Noussair Mazraoui.

The “exciting” youngster, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, impressed during preseason and has played for the club’s U18s and U21s in recent years, but is yet to make his competitive first-team debut, and what better time to do it than against a team from two divisions below.

6 CM – Casemiro

It’s all change in the midfield, and the first of the three players to come into the starting lineup is the immensely experienced Casemiro.

Now, the five-time Champions League winner has received plenty of somewhat justified flak over his underwhelming performances as of late, and while he may no longer be of the level required to match the best teams in the Premier League, he should be able to control a game against significantly weaker opposition, so long as he has mobile players around him, which he will do.

7 CM – Manuel Ugarte

The next ace to start in the middle of the park is Manuel Ugarte, who could be set to make his first start for the Red Devils after coming off the bench at the weekend.

The Uruguayan’s two starts in the international break should quell any fear Ten Hag may have had over his fitness, and the prospect of seeing him breaking up play and disrupting opposition attacks should excite fans.

The 23-year-old may well develop an impressive relationship with Kobbie Mainoo in the long run, but with the Englishman getting a well-earned rest for this match, his job will be to help Casemiro maintain control.

8 CM – Toby Collyer

The final midfielder in the lineup is another youngster who could be making his first start for the club, Toby Collyer.

However, unlike Amass, the 20-year-old talent, whom former Brighton U18 coach Mark Beard described as someone “who plays like two men,” has already made his competitive debut for the club, coming off the bench in the Community Shield and the loss to Liverpool this season.

9 RW – Amad Diallo

Keeping his place on the right of the front three is Amad Diallo.

Like Dalot, the Ivorian dynamo didn’t have his best game against the Saints, receiving a 6/10 from ESPN’s Brown, but was still a threat on the counter and looked lively throughout.

If Ten Hag wants to get the best out of the 22-year-old gem, then he needs to start him in a run of games, including the one tomorrow night.

10 ST – Joshua Zirkzee

It should be no surprise to see Joshua Zirkzee keep his place in the starting lineup, as with Rasmus Hojlund out injured, there isn’t another recognised striker the manager can turn to.

However, that doesn’t mean the former Bologna ace doesn’t deserve to keep his place, as while he’s not been prolific yet, he has looked dangerous here and there and has consistently found himself goalscoring areas.

The England international will hope for a happy Christmas with his family and that his team can get back to winning ways against the Toffees. The Cityzens have won just one game out of their last 12 outings across all competitions and have slipped to seventh position in the league before Christmas.

Pleat wanted £75m England star at Spurs, they signed Njie & Sissoko instead

It was an interesting summer of transfer business for Tottenham Hotspur this year.

Daniel Levy and Co splashed £65m to secure the services of Premier League proven striker and once-capped England international Dominic Solanke, but most of their business looked markedly different in approach.

Instead of bringing in another two or three older players who had the experience of consistently playing in the top flight, the Lilywhites opted to sign several young up-and-coming talents in players like Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-Hyeok.

Signings like these might not get the fans off their seats at the moment, but they are all highly rated and have the potential to develop into something special.

Moreover, by focusing on younger players, the club can ensure they don’t miss out on the next big thing, as they did in the mid-2010s when, instead of listening to David Pleat about a future England star, players like Clinton N’Jie and Moussa Sissoko came through the door.

N'jie & Sissoko's Spurs careers

Okay, so let’s start with Sissoko first, as while he had his detractors early on, he did end up spending five mostly successful years in North London.

In fact, while many in the media dubbed him a £30m flop following his underwhelming debut campaign in N17, he quickly improved and soon became a genuinely useful player for Mauricio Pochettino during a period in which he had the club fighting for major honours.

The former Newcastle United midfielder played 202 games for the Lilywhites, scoring five goals and providing 16 assists, mostly from central and right midfield.

On the other hand, N’jie was an unmitigated flop. While he wasn’t egregiously expensive, his £12m fee was still reasonably sizeable for a young forward in 2015.

There wasn’t an enormous amount of pressure on the then-22-year-old at the time, as his job was to occasionally play off the left and be the backup for a then-still-young Harry Kane, but even then, he failed to deliver.

clinton-njie-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-lyon-waste-kane-pochettino

In 14 appearances across his one and only season with the club, he failed to score and provided just a single assist before he was sent on loan to Marseille for the following season. A year later, he eventually joined the French team permanently.

Overall, while Sissoko was eventually a successful signing, N’jie certainly wasn’t, and around the time the club signed the pair, Pleat was telling them to sign an encouraging talent from the lower divisions who could play all over the pitch.

Spurs missed out on Ollie Watkins

Yes, the youngster that Spurs missed out on signing is indeed England international Ollie Watkins.

Ollie Watkins celebrates for England

According to an article from the Athletic, Pleat recommended a number of talented youngsters to Spurs in the mid-2010s, from James Maddison to Dele Alli and a certain ‘box-to-box midfielder’ from Exeter City.

Yes, before he was terrifying defenders up top, the Newton Abbot-raised marksman was, in his own words, a “utility man” who was happy to play anywhere, including but not limited to “left-wing back, centre midfield, right wing, striker.”

However, while he was at one point more familiar with the role Sissoko played, he soon developed into a seriously deadly attacker, and after wowing fans at Exeter’s St James’ Park, he earned a move to then-Championship side Brentford, where yet more impressive form finally earned him a massive £28m move to Premier League side Aston Villa.

Since his move to Birmingham, the dynamic goalscorer has gone from strength to strength and moved from the wing to the centre-forward position, and, so far, he’s racked up 70 goals and 27 assists in 172 games, which explains why the club value him at a whopping £75m.

However, he took another step up last season, as in 53 appearances, he scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists, which helped the Villans qualify for the Champions League and booked him a place at Euro 2024, where he scored England’s winner in the semi-final.

Ultimately, while clubs cannot sign every player recommended by their scouts, on this occasion, Spurs would have been better off listening to Pleat and bringing in Watkins alongside Sissoko instead of N’jie.

Babar Azam will 'talk to Amir' about Pakistan retirement

Pakistan captain Babar Azam offered a glimmer of hope for Mohammad Amir’s potential return to the national team, saying he will “talk to him about his issues”. In an interview with , Azam said he hadn’t yet spoken to his Karachi Kings teammate on the matter, but acknowledged he was “one of Pakistan’s best bowlers”.This is the first time the Pakistan captain has publicly addressed Amir’s departure from international cricket last year citing “mental torture he could not bear”. At the time, he had accused the coaching staff of “saying things against me”. The bitter nature of the departure, and subsequent statements by Amir of a similar non-conciliatory nature, meant the prospect of the two sides coming to a resolution have looked more remote than ever.”When we talk, we’ll discuss what his issues [with the national side] are,” Azam said. “He’s one of the best left-arm bowlers and I really admire him. The way he’s performed in the PSL so far, I just hope he performs the same way again, and that’s what we are focused on so far.”Amir had focused his criticisms on the current coaching staff when he retired, singling out Waqar Younis, the bowling coach. Head coach Misbah-ul-Haq hit back a few days later, accusing Amir of “making up” the circumstances that prompted his retirement. That, coupled with Amir’s repeated praise of former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur and previous PCB chairman Najam Sethi might make a return to the fold under present circumstances unlikely; Amir has gone as far as saying he would “only return once this management leaves”. That means in the event of a change at the top of the PCB, either cricketing or administrative, the chances of Amir being welcomed back are less distant.Amir’s decision to retire was immediately accepted by CEO Wasim Khan, and further remarks by Amir have yielded no comment from the PCB.

Deal agreed: £45k-a-week Arsenal midfielder set to leave alongside Nketiah

Arsenal look set to see a £45,000-a-week first-team player leave the club alongside the deal to sell Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace, according to a new report.

Mikel Arteta’s side continued their strong start to the new Premier League season over the weekend, as they beat Aston Villa 2-0. That win means it is two victories out of two for the Gunners, as they look to mount a title challenge once again in this 2024/25 campaign. Despite the good start, Arteta is still looking to make some changes to his squad as the transfer window enters the final few days.

Arsenal ready to make late offer to sign "incredible" £70m Trossard repeat

They face competition from Manchester City…

It has been a rather quiet transfer window for Arsenal so far, as the Premier League side have made just two additions, with one of those being goalkeeper David Raya joining on a permanent basis after spending last season on loan at the club.

The other arrival is Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori, who joined the club in a big-money move from Serie A side Bologna. The 22-year-old has had to be patient in the first couple of games, as he’s played just 11 minutes of football so far. Meanwhile, Arsenal haven’t seen many departures from their first-team squad, with the one exception being midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe, who joined Fulham last month.

Apart from him, the Gunners’ other departures were players whose contracts had expired at the end of last season and were allowed to leave the football club, and a few players who have left on loan. However, that could soon be about to change, as Nketiah appears close to the exit door.

Arsenal are expected to accept Crystal Palace’s offer to sign Nketiah in what remains of this transfer window. The bid that Palace made is said to have been £25 million plus a further £5 million in add-ons, similar to what Nottingham Forest had in place for the striker.

But Nketiah might not be the only departure out of the Emirates in these final few days of the transfer window, as a midfielder looks close to following him out the exit door.

Fabio Vieira set to leave Arsenal on loan

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, relayed by Sport Witness, there is an agreement in place between FC Porto and Arsenal over the signing of midfielder Fabio Vieira. The report goes on to add that the agreement between the two clubs will see the Portuguese midfielder return to Porto on loan, with the club paying no loan fee to Arsenal, despite reports to the contrary from Fabrizio Romano.

However, as there has been a compromise on the loan fee, Porto will instead cover Vieira’s entire salary this season, which is said to be £45,000 a week. The report goes on to add that there has been no mention of the player potentially taking a pay cut to facilitate this move, while Porto will not have a buy option as part of this loan move for the 2024//25 season.

Vieira joined the Gunners from Porto in 2022, and since joining the Premier League side, he has gone on to play 49 times for the club in all competitions, but his game time hasn’t been as regular as he would have hoped for, with him playing just 11 times in the league last season.
