Aston Villa should’ve cashed in on star who earns 3x more than Duran

Aston Villa will be featuring in the Champions League for the first time in a generation this season – an unthinkable feat before the appointment of Unai Emery.

The former Arsenal boss has transformed the club in just a couple of years, giving the fan base an experience they will never forget with their European adventures in the Europa Conference League last season, and also in the Champions League this year.

However, the added fixtures will cause congestion during some parts of the campaign, increasing the risk of injury and fatigue to the club’s first team.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

On the flip side, it may allow numerous fringe players to gain a needed run in the side, with one player hugely benefitting from the European run this season.

Jhon Duran’s stats in 2024/25

Despite not starting a single game in the Premier League this season, striker Jhon Duran has enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign for Emery’s side.

The 20-year-old has already scored twice in just 82 minutes, outscoring number one forward Ollie Watkins, showcasing his excellent abilities in front of goal.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

The Colombian was strongly linked with a move to join West Ham United this summer, before landing the hammer blow as the Villans claimed a 2-1 victory over Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Villa’s decision to keep hold of Duran this summer looks to be a great call, with the talent having the ability to provide excellent cover to Watkins, whilst also pushing the England international for a starting role.

However, the same can’t be said for one player who has struggled in recent times, with the club potentially needing to offload the big-money signing at the next available opportunity.

How much Diego Carlos earns in 2024

After joining Villa in a £26m deal from Sevilla back in 2022, centre-back Diego Carlos has struggled with injuries and fitness during his time at Villa Park, with the Brazilian often spending time on the sideline.

During his two-year stint in the West Midlands, the 31-year-old has only made 43 appearances in all competitions, missing the start of the new campaign with yet another injury setback and thus failing to feature at all.

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

However, he was subject to interest from Fulham during the transfer window, with the club needing to offload him given his injury record coupled with his high weekly wage.

The former Sevilla ace earns a whopping £100k-per-week as per Capology, a figure that is nearly three times more than teammate Duran, who only earns £30k-per-week despite his stellar start to this season.

Given his ludicrous weekly incoming, the club desperately need to cut ties with Carlos and invest in a less injury-prone talent who can lead them further up the Premier League table.

With concerns over their PSR standing, a departure could allow Emery’s side to free up funds, potentially avoiding a repeat of this summer which saw them sell star man Douglas Luiz to Juventus.

There is no denying the defender's quality, but unfortunately, if the club are to reach the next level under Emery's guidance, they have to be brutal in their decision-making, with Carlos one player who could find himself on his way out of Villa Park.

England international Rashford has admitted that he is “ready for a new challenge” after struggling for consistency with the Red Devils. Premier League heavyweights at Old Trafford will listen to offers for the 27-year-old forward.

Finding a buyer may be tricky, though, as Rashford is working on a £325,000-a-week contract. His asking price has reportedly been dropped to around £40 million ($50m), but few clubs can afford to match his current salary – especially in Europe.

According to , Rashford could be given the chance to head for the Saudi Pro League. Al-Nassr, who have United legend Ronaldo on their books, are being credited with interest, along with Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli.

Al-Ittihad already have a full quota of non-Saudi players in their squad, but there may be a deal to be done elsewhere. Imagine him & Neto: Chelsea have interest in PL star with "big potential"

With Chelsea looking to add an attacking thrust to their side, they have recently acquired tricky Wolves winger, Pedro Neto.

The 24-year-old can play off both wings and even through the middle if needed, adding pace, 1v1 ability and creation.

One player this could help is Chelsea's new striker signing, Samu Omorodion, by linking the creativity out wide of Neto, and the box presence of 6 foot 4 Omorodion. Nicolas Jackson could also be a beneficiary of Neto's arrival, due to his ability to find passes in behind for the striker.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

But Chelsea could go out and add another striker to the mix, looking to create a frightening trio with Neto and Chelsea POTY, Cole Palmer in attack, with Victor Osimhen remaining on their wishlist.

Chelsea's hunt for another striker

According to reports from the Daily Star, Chelsea are still interested in a move for Brighton forward, Evan Ferguson.

Manchester United are another club interested, and they could even move first for the 19-year-old, in attempt to beat Chelsea to his signature.

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

Despite already signing Omorodion from Atlético Madrid, Chelsea could still be on the lookout for another striking option, with the possibility of Jackson being moved out to the left wing. The 19-year-old fits Chelsea's recent transfer strategy of buying the best and highest-rated youngsters in the world.

Ferguson made 36 appearances for Brighton in all competitions last season, scoring six goals, providing one assist, and totalling 1,721 minutes played, despite suffering multiple injuries.

Ferguson and Neto as a partnership

Neto, the new Chelsea signing, will bring a bundle of creative qualities to the side. The 24-year-old made 24 appearances for Wolves last season, scoring three goals and providing 11 assists.

He averaged 0.53 assists per 90, made 5.82 progressive carries per 90, and produced 2.26 key passes per 90, all of which are qualities that could help unlock a centre-forward at Chelsea. Of course, they already have Jackson and Omorodion on the books, but Ferguson could be another worth watching.

Ferguson showed in the 2022/23 season his ability to be clinical in front of goal at such a young age, scoring ten goals in his debut season at senior level. And his metrics still show this, having a 56.8% shot on target percentage, and over-performing his xG by +0.06 per 90.

The 19-year-old was described as a player with "very big potential" by manager Roberto De Zerbi, after scoring his first Premier League goal back in December 2022.

Standing at around 6 foot 2, Ferguson has a physical frame, perfect for the Premier League, which with time and development could be one of his biggest weapons, winning more aerial duels (currently only averaging 0.80 per 90) and becoming even more of a box presence because of it.

With Chelsea and United both interested, it's clear the raw talent Ferguson possesses, and perhaps a move to Chelsea to work with Neto, Palmer and Co, would unlock his clinical finishing even more, and take him to that next level that is already projected for him.

Watch out Omorodion: Chelsea want PL ace who's a bigger talent than Solanke

Rangana Herath front-runner to be Bangladesh spin bowling coach

The BCB are very close to appointing a spin bowling coach while a new batting coach is also expected to be appointed soon, according to cricket operations chairman Akram Khan. The front-runner for the spin bowling coach’s role is Rangana Herath, who is ahead of Saeed Ajmal and Sairaj Bahutule in the running. Jamie Siddons, the former Bangladesh coach, could also make a return as the team’s batting coach.Related

  • Meet the coaches behind the success of a generation of Bangladesh's best players

  • Covid-19 vaccines key to Bangladesh's 2020-21 domestic season

Khan said the board was pressed for time to appoint the coaches because of Bangladesh’s stacked scheduling in the coming months. They are likely to depart for Zimbabwe on June 29 to play a Test, three ODIs and three T20Is, before facing Australia, New Zealand and England at home in at least 14 white-ball matches ahead of the T20 World Cup.”It is difficult to find a coach during the Covid period but we will try to sign a coach before touring Zimbabwe as Australia will arrive right after the Zimbabwe series,” Khan said. “Then England and New Zealand will also come. That’s why we are trying to finalise it now. Three spin bowling coaches (candidates) will come from Asia, one each from Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan. We are trying to communicate with them and maybe they will arrive in a few days. We will take the opinions of senior cricketers in the next two-three days, discuss it with the coaching staff, the head coach and we also need to think about it further.”If the terms are agreed on, this will be Herath’s first major coaching role since retiring from international cricket in 2018 as a record-breaking Test cricketer. He will replace Daniel Vettori, whose contract with the BCB ended in April this year. Since the pandemic restricted travel in and out of New Zealand, Vettori was only available as spin bowling coach during Bangladesh’s white-ball tour of New Zealand in March this year. BCB’s coach Sohel Islam has been deputising for him in some series.”In the current circumstance, it will be difficult to get him [Vettori]. Hence, we are not showing any interest for him… To be honest, some players want Sohel as the spin bowling coach. We will take everything into account before taking a decision,” Khan said.He also suggested that Bangladesh were in the market for a new batting coach, replacing Jon Lewis who has been appointed on a series-by-series basis since the start of the year. Siddons, who was Bangladesh’s head coach between 2007 and 2011, is being talked about as the possible batting coach.”We will first decide whether we will keep him [Lewis] or not. If we don’t keep him, we have two-three candidates shortlisted. One of them had worked with Bangladesh before. Hopefully, we will finalise it in three-four days.”

Surrey old stagers refuse to be blown away as Middlesex find solace in youth

Draw becomes the favourite as rain and wind cut short proceedings at Kia Oval

Matt Roller21-May-2021

Perhaps it was inevitable that the return of fans to The Oval would coincide with the wettest week of south London weather yet this summer, with 46mph winds blowing across the ground and rendering the floodlights unusable for reasons of health and safety. Persistent rain meant that only 18 overs were possible on the second day of the London derby, and while an uncharacteristically green pitch and a brittle Middlesex batting line-up means that there is still some chance of a definitive result, the forecast leaves the draw as the strong favourite.Surrey resumed six wickets down following their dramatic collapse on the first afternoon and the tempo of the first hour was dictated by two veterans, their last recognised batters. “Watching two 39-year-olds do battle at The Oval in a howling gale is what makes county cricket so special,” Chris Nash, the former Nottinghamshire and Sussex batter, tweeted as Rikki Clarke cut Tim Murtagh for four, with Hashim Amla, 38, resting on his bat at the non-striker’s end and contemplating his relative youth.Clarke had started with consecutive boundaries off Martin Andersson in the first over of the morning while Amla, fresh from 215 in his most recent innings at this ground, was typically restrained, occasionally steering through backward point and gully but otherwise exerting himself as little as possible. There are a number of hypotheses as to why more and more county cricketers are playing on into their late 30s and early 40s – better pay, less real-world experience after the shift away from summer contracts in the late 1990s and improvements in sports science and medicine among them – and both seem to have the enthusiasm to keep going for some time yet.But after the calm of their 43-run stand, both fell in the space of four balls, dismissed by two of Middlesex’s brighter prospects: Amla lost the top of his off stump to Tom Helm, while Blake Cullen found Clarke’s outside edge as he shaped to play a booming drive through cover.Helm has been the pick of the Middlesex attack across the two days, returning 2 for 43, and is in an intriguing phase of his career. He has regularly been on the fringes of the England white-ball squads over the last 12 months without coming close to a debut but has never played more than seven games in a Championship season and took two wickets for 186 runs across his first two games of this summer.A tall bowler who was clocked at 87mph/140kph on Sky’s feed on the first day, Helm’s ability to find extra bounce can be lost on the slow pitches seen at Lord’s in recent years but is more valuable on the livelier side of the Thames. He is contracted to Middlesex until the end of 2023 and looks unlikely to move away any time soon but at 27, it will be intriguing to see whether he becomes a limited-overs specialist or can flourish across formats. He used the crease to subtly change his angle of attack, as demonstrated with the dismissal of Amla when he went wider, angling the ball in before nibbling it away just enough off the seam to beat the bat.Cullen, meanwhile, is highly rated at Middlesex and already looks like an exciting prospect at the age of 19. There is plenty of scope for him to add some extra pace once he fills out, but he found good bounce from a length from the Vauxhall End and deserved Clarke’s wicket. His skills should complement those of Ethan Bamber, the 22-year-old “Mini Murts” who has 22 wickets at 21.86 this season with his 74mph/119kph nibblers, and the two of them could form the spine of a strong red-ball attack for a number of years.Eight down and with two genuine tailenders at the crease, Surrey might well have declared to make use of conditions if not for the prospect of a batting bonus point in 15 runs’ time. Their seamers will relish the chance to expose Middlesex’s top-order frailties at some stage on Saturday, but with three-and-a-half sessions lost to rain already, the result which suits neither team looks likely.

Man Utd official now sent to club as Ten Hag eyes £25k-p/w Shaw replacement

The transfer window has just closed, but Manchester United have placed a new young defender on their radar for next time around already, according to a new report.

The Red Devils have been very busy in the last few months, as the club’s new hierarchy backed manager Erik ten Hag in the market. However, the new arrivals haven’t helped the team as of yet, as it is one win in three league games.

Ten Hag was backed with five additions this summer, and those were Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and finally, midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Meanwhile, the club also put a big focus on letting players leave Old Trafford, as they tried to clear the wage bill and bring money into the club. Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Mason Greenwood were the big departures over the course of the summer.

But despite the window in England shutting on Friday, Manchester United are still having their eye on a couple of transfers. It came to light on Monday that midfielder Christian Eriksen could leave the club this week, as he is being looked at by Anderlecht. The Danish international is in the last year of his contract, and the club’s chief executive is a “long-term admirer” of his.

Man United are hopeful that Eriksen leaves the club, as it will then free up space to allow them to sign River Plate young star Franco Mastantuono in the January transfer window. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona were said to be keen on the player, but the £35 million price tag has put them off, leaving United as the frontrunners.

Man United send officials to watch £25k-p/w Shaw replacement

According to Tutto Juve, relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United have also placed Juventus defender Juan Cabal on their transfer radar. The 23-year-old only joined the Italian giants in July from Hellas Verona, but he is someone they are already taking notice of.

Cabal has started all three of Juventus’ league games this season, with his performances for the club said to have been pleasing his teammates as well as the club’s supporters. Furthermore, his early season performances has now seen him end up on the Red Devils’ radar.

Man United do have two left-backs in their squad in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, but both are currently out injured, with the latter being out for over 12 months. This has meant Diogo Dalot has operated at left-back a lot of the time, and United are now prepared to strengthen in that area.

The report states that the Premier League side have sent officials to watch the player, and United could consider making an offer in the coming transfer windows, with Juventus said to be looking for €30 million, which is roughly £25 million. Furthermore, the defender is said to be on a weekly wage of €42,000, which is around £25,000.

Edu was planning shock late Arsenal bid to sign once-£100m star pre-deadline

Sporting director Edu Gaspar and the Arsenal recruitment team were planning a "shock" late bid to sign a former £100 million player before the deadline at 11pm last night, according to a report.

Arsenal sign Raheem Sterling on loan in last-gasp deal

At the eleventh hour on Friday night, and just in time to submit their deal sheet before the cut-off, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal shook hands on a deal to sign Raheem Sterling on loan for the rest of the 2024/25 season.

Arsenal hit gold on amazing talent who’s worth way more than Sterling

Mikel Arteta has a player in his squad who could move on for a serious profit in the future

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 31, 2024

There were reports that Arteta had a private conversation with Sterling over joining Arsenal yesterday, with the Gunners then racing to get an agreement over the line as Chelsea also looked to get his £325,000-per-week wages off the books, for this campaign at least.

GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs understands that Sterling has agreed to a pay cut as part of his temporary spell at Arsenal, with Arteta's men and Chelsea splitting the cost of his salary 50/50.

The 82-cap England international winger will don the number 10 shirt, which was left available by Emile Smith-Rowe after he completed his permanent switch to Fulham over the summer.

Unfortunately, the transfer came too late for Sterling to make his Premier League debut against Brighton today, as it wasn't done in time for him to be registered for the Emirates Stadium clash.

"Well to be fair, we never planned really to sign him when we started the transfer window, just to be very transparent. For different reasons," said Edu on the late signing of Sterling.

"But we always say to everyone that you have to be prepared for every single scenario. So when that opportunity came to me, and I checked the squad, I checked how he plays, and spoke to Mikel of course.

"I spoke to Tim [Lewis], our vice-chairman, to check if everyone is comfortable for the step we are going to take, and it makes a lot of sense. Yes, it makes a lot of sense to have someone like him because I’m pretty sure he is going to add a lot [to] the squad.

"He has experience, he understands more than anyone the league, he’s played in the Champions League many times. He won the Premier League a few times as well, so I think he can add a lot to our squad and I feel really happy to see someone like him in our squad."

Arsenal also planned "shock" late bid for Ivan Toney

With Sterling over the line, a report by Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey claims that Arsenal were also planning a late swoop for Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Indeed, before the 28-year-old sealed a marquee switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, it is believed Arsenal were readying a "shock" late bid to sign Toney – who was also on Chelsea's radar.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Other deadline day reports claimed Arsenal were on the lookout for opportunities in regard to a new striker, but perhaps the frantic last-minute nature of Sterling's deal meant that the north Londoners needed to pour all their energy into getting him over the line instead.

It means Arsenal go into the 24/25 season without signing a new prolific number nine, despite being tipped to do so all summer. However, it shouldn't be too much of a worry for Arteta, as the squad does have real attacking quality in a variety of attacking areas, especially with Sterling's late capture.

Toney, who Brentford valued at £100 million in January, is now gearing up for a new chapter in the Middle East.

Birmingham make offer for £2.4k-p/w defender, they’ve already had a reply

Birmingham City have lodged an offer to sign a highly-rated defender this summer, and the Blues have already been given a reply in their pursuit.

Busy summer for League One Birmingham

Relegated from the Championship to League One last season, Birmingham have broken the transfer record for the English third-tier twice already this summer. The Blues are keen to return to the Championship immediately and have splashed out £12m to do so, signing 11 new players ahead of the new season kicking off.

Headed by a £3.5m move for defender Christoph Klarer and a £3.3m deal for Willum Willumsson (from Darmstadt and Go Ahead Eagles respectively) they have wasted no time handing manager Chris Davies one of the most expensive League One squads ever assembled.

Alfie May has arrived from Charlton Athletic, while ex-Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell has also been recruited alongside a move for Brighton youngster Marc Leonard.

It has been a slow start to the season despite these additions though; they needed a late May penalty to rescue a draw against Reading in their opening game at St Andrews, before edging past 10 man Charlton Athletic 1-0 in the Carabao Cup first round to set up a tie against Fulham.

However, they are still looking to strengthen further this summer, and have now tabled an opening offer for another defender.

Birmingham table audacious offer

That comes with reports in Portugal [via Sport Witness] revealing that the Blues have made a 3m euro (£2.5m) offer to sign promising defender Filipe Relvas, who is also wanted by top flight clubs across Europe.

The 24-year-old centre-back currently plies his trade for Portuguese top flight side Portimonense, and has been described by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson as a "6 foot 4 left centre-back with excellent technical ability" who would be a "quality low cost option" for sides around Europe.

Leeds now hold concrete interest in signing "fantastic" new promotion rival

The Whites are still looking for attacking reinforcements.

1 ByTom Cunningham Aug 15, 2024

Birmingham were perhaps not the side he had in mind, but they have nonetheless pushed forward with a move. As per reports in Portugal, they have made a £2.5m offer for the defender, who still has two years left to run on his £2,400 a week deal in Portugal.

However, it is added that "this was immediately rejected by Portimonense, who seemingly want more" and know about interest across Europe. It remains to be seen whether Birmingham return for the defedner, with the report claiming tenuously that the third tier outfit "could be set to make a second" bid to take him to St Andrews.

Should they pull off a deal, it would be a major coup for Davies' side, with Wolfsburg having previously been linked with the defender. It would also take their spending in excess of £15m, and surely make promotion come the end of the season even more important for their financial security.
