Monchi has been hard at work behind the scenes to get those deals over the line, but there could be more to come before the Premier League season kicks off next weekend.

For example, reports aboard in recent days suggested that Villa were looking to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea and had even reached an agreement with the Blues, but as we know, that is yet to gather any major pace in England.

Elsewhere, Villa have been linked with a move to sign Joe Gomez from Liverpool, whereas a formal bid has been sent to Sunderland for forward Mason Cotcher, with the teenager actually training with Villa’s youth squad already.

Meanwhile, there could be more departures following the high-profile exits of Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby to Juventus and Al-Ittihad respectively. Jhon Duran is one player who has been heavily linked with a Villa Park exit.

It is shaping up to be a busy month both on and off the pitch for Villa, and a new report has stated that a new midfielder is wanted in the Midlands.

Aston Villa make offer to sign Bryan Cristante

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa have made an offer worth more than £17m plus bonuses to sign AS Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante.

The Serie A giants are said to be considering the bid from Villa Park, with Monchi signing Cristante during his time at Roma. He’s presented as key in any possible deal this time around, with the player potentially being allowed to leave by Roma boss Daniele De Rossi.

Cristante, an Italy international, is primarily a holding midfielder but can also play as a centre-back or further forward in midfield if required.

The 29-year-old began his career on the books at AC Milan and has gone on to play in Portugal with Benfica. He’s been with Roma since 2019, though, making an impressive 280 appearances for his current employers.

As can be seen, Crisante was hailed as “unbelievable” last season by journalist Josh Bunting for a goal he scored last season, and by the looks of it, he could be the next midfield addition made by Villa, making this one to watch.

Villa launch bid to sign £25m star who Watkins would turn into a "monster"

The powers that be at Aston Villa would have allowed themselves a moment to rejoice over Ollie Watkins' incredible swivel-and-strike to send England into the final of the 2024 European Championship, but the focus will swiftly have shifted back to the summer transfer market.

Especially considering that efforts are underway to bring Jaden Philogene back to the club, matching Ipswich Town's £18m offer to sign the winger from Hull City, as per the pre-signing agreement that saw him leave Villa Park one year ago.

Ian Maatsen (£37.5m)

Douglas Luiz (£42m)

Samuel Iling-Junior (£14.5m)

Tim Iroegbunam (£9m)

Enzo Barrenechea (£8m)

Morgan Sanson (£3m)

Lewis Dobbin (£10m)

Ross Barkley (£5m)

However, that's not the only deal in the pipeline for Unai Emery's outfit – the Spanish manager, admittedly, will have celebrated Watkins' winner with certain reservations, given the Three Lions' forthcoming opposition – with a bid having been rejected for a former Premier League midfielder.

The Villans could now return with an improved offer.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Lazio News, Aston Villa have seen a €25m (£21m) bid rejected by Serie A side Lazio for centre-midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Matteo Guendouzi at Lazio

Newcastle United have also been turned down, though it is thought that Lazio could entertain a refreshed offer from such outfits if it reaches the €30m (£25m) ballpark.

Why Matteo Guendouzi would be perfect for Aston Villa

The 25-year-old Guendouzi, first and foremost, is well acquainted with Aston Villa's current manager. Emery signed the Frenchman from French side Lorient for around £8m back in July 2018, when he was a teenager.

Former Arsenal player Matteo Guendouzi

He completed 66 fixtures under the 52-year-old and was described as a "warrior" and an "important player" for the Gunners by club legend Robert Pires.

The 6 foot 1 midfielder spent the latter half of his four-year period at the Emirates Stadium out on loan, moving to Marseille on a permanent deal in 2022 after failing to win Mikel Arteta over.

One year back in his homeland provided comparative success but he was loaned to Lazio after one year and has since settled into the Italian way of things as a permanent addition.

As per Sofascore, Guendouzi featured 33 times in Serie A last season, scoring twice and adding three assists, notably creating five big chances and averaging 3.6 ball recoveries per game, also completing 85% of his passes.

At his best, the £52k-per-week talent is found driving forwards, seeking to stretch lines and influence play from an attacking standpoint. His problem has been the wandering nature of his career thus far, failing to assimilate himself into a long-term project.

Villa could offer him that, and since he's adept at pushing into promising positions to supplement the frontline, he might be the perfect man to take Watkins to an even higher level – and vice versa.

How Watkins could get the best out of Guendouzi

Watkins has shaped into quite the player. 27 goals and 13 assists across all competitions for Aston Villa last season, with The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell hailing him as "the Premier League's second-best striker" – no prizes for guessing who's first.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

Electric, versatile and riding the richest vein of confidence he likely has ever felt throughout his 27 years, Villa's main man would be a supreme partner for any player, but Guendouzi could find himself thriving behind the dynamic marksman.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once pronounced Guendouzi to be a "monster in the making" after a fantastic performance in the North London Derby. There is a sense that brought back to the Premier League, under Emery's wing once more, he could showcase the style that had led to such commendations.

Especially when considering the conditions that he would walk into at Villa Park. Villa are, of course, about to step into the Champions League after making significant strides under Emery's leadership, and Guendouzi would undoubtedly be excited to play a part in such a project – especially as le Aquile are set to compete in the Europa League.

Furthermore, Watkins could be the ideal partner to eke out the very best of the eight-cap Les Bleus player's progressive and aggressive approach.

Guendouzi, indeed, might not have enjoyed the finest of campaigns in Italy last year but it was by no means poor, merely inconsistent. His ball-playing prowess is evident though, and could be used to provide Watkins with a steady outlet as he darts into the danger area.

As per FBref, Guendouzi ranked among the top 15% of central midfielders in Serie A last season for passes into the penalty area and the top 17% for crosses into the penalty area per 90.

England (and Villa) fans need no reminder of Watkins' quality on the end of such deliveries, having expertly latched onto Cole Palmer's surgical through ball to bypass Bart Verbruggen's goal. Cue the Rapture.

Guendouzi has showcased his quality on numerous occasions throughout his career so far but he's struggled to find a home that truly allows him to shine.

At least, he's struggled since Emery was sacked at Arsenal in November 2019. A reunion could pay dividends for a club seeking to cement its place among the big boys at the height of the continental stage.

With Newcastle also sniffing around, Monchi and Co better launch an improved offer quickly, lest he fall into rival clutches.

Imagine him & Watkins: Villa want to sign a player who once cost £111m

Peter Handscomb's delight as Victoria's youngsters overturn their idols

Through necessity Victoria are giving a number of young players a chance this season so the result at the SCG, where they overturned a strong New South Wales side, brought plenty of satisfaction for captain Peter Handscomb. In the off-season experienced quicks Peter Siddle and Chris Tremain departed to new states while Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell have seen their red-ball chances reduced to zero by Australia duty and the impact of Covid-19 bubbles. Added to that, on the resumption of the competition this week Will Pucovski has been ruled out for the season due to a shoulder injury.Over the last three days in Sydney, two players with a combined age of 38 played central roles in a tense four-wicket victory on a tricky surface that offered something for the bowlers throughout with Nathan Lyon a considerable danger in the last innings.Mitch Perry, the 20-year-old seamer, claimed match figures of 5 for 39 which included the scalp of Steven Smith in the first innings (Smith fell to 21-year-old Will Sutherland in the second, although was far from happy with the decision) and then Victoria’s run chase was lifted from a rocky 5 for 87 by an unbeaten 38 from 18-year-old Jake Fraser-McGurk who is regarded as one of the most exciting batting talents in Australia.Related

  • Six players to watch as the Sheffield Shield returns

  • Perry makes his mark by removing Smith as Victoria dominate

  • Fraser-McGurk helps Victoria survive Lyon threat to secure victory

“Playing against a strong New South Wales team, we’ve got a few boys who grew up watching these blokes,” Handscomb said. “So to come out and have the chance to play against them was one thing and to walk away with the win, it’s even better.”.”Mitch, it’s only his third Shield game and we had a couple of things for him after his first two, he was a bit pretty, maybe bowled a bit too wide and didn’t make the batters play enough.”For him to turn that around so quickly and ask questions of some of the best batters in the world was just awesome. He’s come along in leaps and bounds in a couple of months, I’m pretty excited to see what he’s going to do for the rest of the season”Then obviously Rooster [Fraser-McGurk] at the end there, [he had a] pretty calm head, maybe it helped he was young and didn’t have any demons or anything, he just went out and batted the way he batted, he’s an exciting talent. I’m pretty pumped to see what he’s going to do.”While all teams have had challenges thrown at them this season due to the impacts of the pandemic, that has been more acute for Victoria. They had to do two weeks quarantine in Adelaide, with very limited training, before the hub earlier this season and ahead of this game had to abide by stay-at-home orders having flown into Sydney due to the recent outbreak in Melbourne. They have now had their next match, also against New South Wales, relocated to Bankstown in Sydney due to border restrictions in Melbourne but Handscomb was more than happy to take the pragmatic view.”We were quite lucky to play this game,” Handscomb said. “With everything that was going on, Covid playing its role in everything, I think we’re all pretty aware there are going to be mini-outbreaks and they are going to force border closures and whatnot. So to still be able to have this competition running and moving forward is awesome and a great credit to everyone who did that.”We love playing at home, we know our conditions pretty well and in a year where we’ve spent a fair bit of time away from home, it would have been nice to go back. But to keep the competition going and make sure everyone can keep the schedule as planned, we’re pretty happy to stay up here. We’ve got a couple of days off in Bondi so that’s not the worst spot in the world either.”

Tottenham consider swap move for £162k-a-week forward with Ange "obsessed"

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is "obsessed" with signing a forward for his squad this summer, and it is believed Spurs are willing to offer players in exchange for one very highly-rated star in particular.

Spurs in market for another attacker as deadline day approaches

Summer transfer deadline day comes at the end of this month, so the Lilywhites are running out of time to get more required new additions through the door ahead of Postecoglou's second Premier League campaign in charge.

Sky Sports: Tottenham expected to table bid for £40 million "game changer"

The Lilywhites face stiff competition from abroad.

One of the rumoured goals for Spurs before August 30 is signing a new attacking option, despite having already sealed a season-long loan extension for Timo Werner.

Son Heung-min and Richarlison scored the bulk of Tottenham's goals last season, helping Postecoglou's side qualify for the Europa League, and they pushed Aston Villa right to the end in the race for Champions League qualification, only to just miss out.

The duo scored 29 goals in all competitions, filling the void left by Harry Kane's departure to Bayern Munich last summer, but uncertainty surrounds their futures. Son's contract is set to expire next year as things stand, while Spurs are open to selling Richarlison amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Tottenham have been linked with a host of strikers and attackers as a result. Lille star Jonathan David has attracted interest from Spurs chiefs, while more marquee options like Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres are also on Postecoglou's radar.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney is also yet to make headway in finding a new club this summer. Spurs are being repeatedly linked with a move for the England international, with talkSPORT recently claiming that Toney wants Tottenham to make a bid for him.

Ivan Toney for England

“Toney, that is who Tottenham need to go and sign," said ex-club scout Bryan King to Tottenham News.

“He is worth the extra money, and if Spurs want to move to the next level that is the player they need to convince to join them. Spurs need to make that step and guarantee they will finish in the top four next season, and Toney is the player who will help them do that."

A move for Toney would arguably make sense, considering his contract situation, with Declan Rice even comparing him to Kane. However, a very surprising alternative is now being mooted.

Tottenham willing to make part-exchange bid for Victor Osimhen

According to journalist Wayne Veysey and Football Insider, Napoli star Victor Osimhen is attracting attention from N17, and Spurs have asked to be kept informed about the Nigerian's situation.

Chelsea and Napoli are in ongoing talks over Osimhen, and the Serie A side are growing more open to the prospect of Romelu Lukaku being included in a deal for the 25-year-old.

This has alerted Daniel Levy, technical director Johan Lange and Co. Indeed, Postecoglou is described as "obsessed" with signing a new forward, and Tottenham are willing to also offer players in exchange for Osimhen if they decide to formalise their intent.

It could still be a costly operation, as the striker's £162,000-per-week contract includes a £110 million release clause, so it remains to be seen how low Napoli are willing to go in terms of cash offers if players are included in a proposed swap deal.

Man Utd want £88m "superstar" who’s a bigger talent than Yoro

Manchester United mean business this summer. INEOS have wasted no time in bolstering Erik ten Hag's first team, tying up deals for dynamic forward Joshua Zirkzee and LOSC Lille's Leny Yoro.

Having fallen flat in the Premier League last season, United's bleak eighth-place finish was rectified one week later when Manchester City were defeated in the FA Cup final.

The thing is, Man United weren't good enough last year, but Ten Hag still emerged with his second piece of silverware in as many seasons; his advent brought the end of a six-year trophy drought.

Erik ten Hag with the FA Cup trophy.

Now, it's time to launch an offensive on those at the forefront of the top flight, narrowing the 31-point gulf from champions Manchester City. Dealings thus far have spoken of a step in the right direction, but the defence needs more attention, and that is where the focus lies.

Man Utd transfer news

Yoro, regarded as one of the most talented young defenders in the world, joined United in a deal rising to £59m after a high-profile battle for his signature.

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

Real Madrid, his favoured destination, were unwilling to pay the demanded figure, while other outfits including Liverpool had previously withdrawn from the race. United have landed an 18-year-old with the skillset tailored to long-term dominance at the apex of the European game.

Now, Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopes to reinforce United's backline once more, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs De Ligt two high-profile targets but both seemingly more unlikely by the day to join this summer.

SL Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva

As such, Thursday's edition of Portuguese newspaper O Jogo – via Sport Witness – suggests that Benfica's Antonio Silva could be the next to join the ranks, though his €100m (£88m) release clause might prove to be a sticking point.

The Old Trafford side have turned their attention to the 20-year-old after having troubles with other targets, and, crucially, INEOS are 'convinced' that they can negotiate a more affordable figure.

Antonio Silva's impressive rise

Barely into his professional career, Silva has accomplished much across his first two campaigns as a senior member of Benfica's senior set-up. Across this span, he has amassed 94 appearances and has scored seven goals, winning the 2022/23 Liga Portugal title.

His exploits in his homeland earned him a place in Roberto Martinez's Euro 2024 squad, and while the young defender endured a performance to be forgotten as Georgia defeated his nation in a final group stage clash – a dead-rubber match for already-qualified and much-changed Portugal – his skillset is certainly not negated.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has described him as "one of Benfica's best prospects", a "mature leader" with the "raw ability to be a top [centre-back]", and United could score a real hit in bringing him to a defensive line starting to boast a good sense of balance and depth.

Lisandro Martinez is one of the Premier League's best defenders, with Luke Shaw describing him as an "absolute monster" after his stunning debut season; Harry Maguire is an experienced leader in the rear; Jonny Evans, 36, belied his twilit years by producing solid displays in an injury-plagued defence last year.

With Victor Lindelof also on the books and Yoro recently welcomed, United might just find that they have the tools to restore their defence to its one-time vigour.

Benfica defender Antonio Silva.

After all, Yoro and Silva could prove to be one of football's elite partnerships down the line, with the latter perhaps even boasting the quality to be the cream of the crop at the Theatre of Dreams.

Why Silva could be a "superstar"

It's October 2022, and Benfica have knocked Juventus out of the Champions League in the group phase after an extraordinary 4-3 victory at the Estádio da Luz. Silva, 18, opened his account after 17 minutes and issued a knee-sliding salute. He was here.

It was the gusto and guile of a player confident in their prodigious ability and future success at the very highest level, and it's quite likely that Old Trafford bosses were excited having sent scouts to watch the teenager earlier that month.

A hard-tackling and athletically robust centre-half, Silva is shaping up to be the complete package, actually ranking among the top 2% of defenders in Portugal last season for pass completion, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 16% for successful take-ons and the top 8% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

He differs from the expertly languid style of Yoro, and that could mark a fine sense of contrast in Ten Hag's unit over the years to come. Yoro's intelligence, spatial awareness, and reading of the game suggest that he has the trappings of a future world-class phenomenon.

As the comparison table above highlights, both players, scarcely into their respective senior careers, produced an excellent level of performance last year, though Silva showed himself to be more effective and active in the duel and more mobile in his ground covering.

Pundit Jamie Carragher has even gone as far as to say that Silva is "going to be a superstar", in awe at the player's Herculean effort against Juventus almost two years ago.

The season ahead will prove to be a big one for the Portuguese talent, but with such an almighty set of qualities, he could just find himself completing Man United's backline and rising to the No. 1 spot at a club that threatens to return to its one-time imperiousness at the summit of Europe.
