Havertz repeat: Arsenal hold talks to sign a "future legend" of the PL

The season may have just ended, but there won't be any time to rest as the summer transfer window is mere days away from officially opening, and like every other club in the Premier League, Arsenal are set for a busy few months.

The Gunners had a brilliant window last year, bringing in the likes of David Raya, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, even if the latter took some time to win over fans and pundits alike.

However, while those outside the club weren't necessarily convinced by the German, Mikel Arteta was, and based on recent reports, the Spaniard could be set to pull a similar trick this summer and bring in a player who has terrorised his side in the past.

Arsenal transfer news

According to recent reports, via TEAMtalk, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been in 'talks' with Arteta over a potential move to North London this summer.

Fans have been vaguely aware of the Gunners' interest in the England international over the last few months, but the revelation that talks have been held between the Premier League runners-up and the player is a significant development.

Moreover, the report's claim that there is interest in the move from 'both sides' suggests that this seismic move really could happen.

Marcus Rashford

However, with four years remaining on his £300k-per-week contract, it won't be cheap, with journalist Dean Jone suggesting it could cost up to £80m on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast.

While the money involved is something Edu Gaspar and Co would have to take into account, the chance to sign a player who only a season ago looked like one of the best in Europe doesn't come around very often, and signing Havertz from a rival has worked out well for the North Londoners.

Arsenal could repeat their Havertz trick

Now, there may well be a portion of Arsenal supporters out there who wouldn't want their club to go anywhere near Rashford following his rather underwhelming season – to put it diplomatically – with United this year, in which he scored eight goals and provided five assists.

However, they only need to look back to last summer, when they spent £65m on Havertz, who had a grand total of nine goals and one assist to his name in 47 games for Chelsea the season prior.

Flashforward a year, and the German international has racked up a really impressive first-season haul of 14 goals and seven assists in 51 games for the Gunners.

Furthermore, in the 18 games he's started as a striker, he's scored eight goals and provided seven assists.

So, if Arteta was able to completely transform the fortunes of a former rival's player, why couldn't he do the same again?

It was only a year ago that the "unstoppable" Manchester-born dynamo, as described by Erik ten Hag, scored 30 goals and provided ten assists in 56 games for the Red Devils.

Moreover, Arsenal fans are already fully aware of just how good the 5 foot 11 machine can be, as in his 16 Premier League games against the North Londoners, he scored six goals and provided four assists.

It would undoubtedly be an expensive deal to complete and one that would surely bring with it plenty of media attention and scrutiny, but with Arteta's track record of reviving players, why wouldn't he want to sign someone talent scout Jacek Kulig, once dubbed a "future legend"?

Celtic star who lost the ball 17x was Scotland’s weak link v Switzerland

Scotland’s hopes of progressing to the last 16 at Euro 2024 are still intact, but only just after a tense encounter against Switzerland that finished 1-1.

The draw means a win against Hungary will put Scotland on four points, which could be enough to seal a place in the knockout stage – the first time ever for a Scottish side at a major tournament.

It wasn’t pretty, far from it, but it gives Steve Clarke’s men a fighting chance on Sunday in Stuttgart.

The level of performance was much better than what it was against Germany last Friday, but several players still need to improve massively for the third and final group game.

Anthony Ralston endured a nightmare on the opening night of the competition, and he wasn’t much better against the Swiss.

Anthony Ralston’s game in numbers vs Switzerland

The Celtic defender lost possession 11 times, completed just 15 of his 21 attempted passes and failed to even succeed with a dribble or make a key pass against the hosts in what was a dismal display during match day one.

It perhaps wasn’t much of a surprise to see Clarke unleash him in the same role on Wednesday night given the limited options available to him, but the first half of the game showcased his limitations.

He was at fault for Xherdan Shaqiri’s stunning leveller after Scott McTominay opened the scoring for the Scots after just 13 minutes and was given a torrid time throughout.

He was given the lowest Sofascore rating out of the entire starting XI (6.3) along with completing just 59% of his passes (16/27) – eight fewer than goalkeeper Angus Gunn – taking 51 touches and losing possession a staggering 17 times during the match.

The right-back also won just 50% of his ground duels and was dribbled past twice. The question for Clarke now is, will he start him again on Sunday?

Players who could replace Anthony Ralston

The most realistic option would be Kieran Tierney. The Arsenal defender, however, had to be stretched off during the second half, and he will miss the tie against Hungary.

Ross McCrorie could be offered an opportunity at either right-back or right-wing back depending on the formation that Clarke goes with.

Of course, this is a massive gamble considering he has played a grand total of 90 minutes at international level, against Gibraltar no less, suggesting that throwing him in ahead of one of the most important matches Scotland have played this century could be a major risk.

Scotland

Hungary are currently bottom of the Group A table having suffered two defeats from two matches, yet they could still pose a key threat against Scotland on Sunday evening.

Clarke will need to summon up another positive performance, but he will be keen for his side to be more effective in front of goal, especially considering they had 12 shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes on Wednesday.

Will Clarke break new ground for the nation? Or will it be a repeat of Morocco in 1998? Come Sunday evening, history could be made in Germany.

Aston Villa now leading the race to sign "brilliant" new Euro 2024 star

Looking to flex their Champions League muscles for the first time, Aston Villa are reportedly in pole position to sign a Euro 2024 star who could slot straight into Unai Emery's side.

Aston Villa transfer news

Of course, whilst it would be easy to assume that Villa are in a position to spend big after qualifying for the Champions League last season, the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules mean that they've got to sell before they can think about spending big, which could result in Douglas Luiz's exit this summer.

According to reports, the Brazilian could swap the Midlands for Italy and Juventus this summer in a deal that would see Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior move the other way in quite the shake-up for all involved.

Once they solve their profit and sustainability dilemma, however, Villa can turn their attention towards potential reinforcements and one Euro 2024 star. According to Il Giorno, Aston Villa are in pole position to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan this summer, with the right-back at a stalemate with the Italian giants over his future.

£150,000-per-week star now wants to leave Aston Villa with Jhon Duran

The Villans need to balance their books through sales.

Part of the Netherlands squad for the Euros, Dumfries' future is unlikely to be settled before the end of his side's tournament, but Villa will seemingly be there waiting when the opportunity comes their way. A Serie A winner, the Midlands club could be making quite the statement by welcoming Dumfries in the coming months.

Given that Emery will have Champions League football to balance next season too, competition for places will be no bad thing in his ever-improving side.

"Brilliant" Dumfries would be an upgrade on Cash

Whilst Matty Cash enjoyed another solid season at Villa Park, Villa would be doing themselves no harm by welcoming a player of proven Champions League quality in Dumfries, who could be an upgrade on the Poland international. And if those in the Midlands want to continue their recent rise, making ruthless decisions will be an important part.

Given that Cash's numbers highlight his defensive ability whilst Dumfries is better on the ball, Emery would suddenly have two options who can provide two very different traits when needed, which could prove to be crucial next season. The Dutchman has already earned plenty of praise in England too, with Micah Richards saying via TeamTalk:

Denzel Dumfries. What a player he is. I just thought his whole game was brilliant. It was his timing of his runs… He didn’t sort of mix it up too much but when he did it was the right moments. Down this right-hand side he was just breathless.”

So, once his Euros campaign is over, Dumfries seems like a player to watch this summer, as Villa enter pole position for his signature.

Fabrizio Romano: Positive new update on Man Utd return for van Nistelrooy

Manchester United have been handed a positive boost in their chase of Ruud van Nistelrooy this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to secure his backroom staff target ahead of the new Premier League season.

Ten Hag set to be offered new Man Utd deal

An FA Cup win followed by two weeks of Manchester United interviewing multiple other candidates for the role eventually culminated in the Red Devils deciding to keep the faith with Erik ten Hag heading into the 2024/25 season.

The Dutchman oversaw one of the worst seasons in Manchester United's Premier League history, finishing eighth and conceding as many goals as 16th-placed Brentford, while his side faced the second most shots per game of any side in Europe's top five leagues, behind only Sheffield United and behind relegated Luton Town.

However, there were mitigating circumstances, most significantly a lengthy injury list which led to defenders being played out of position and Casemiro ending the season at centre-back, making up the 14th different Red Devils centre-back pairing of the season.

According to Opta, the Dutchman was only able to call upon his first-choice pairing of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane for 11% of his side's Premier League games, while his most used pairing of Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane started just six games together.

Perhaps with this in mind, the Dutchman was granted a stay of execution and is set to be offered a new deal, with ESPN reporting that the Red Devils are hoping that they can reach an agreement over a new contract "before their pre-season tour of the US", which begins on July 27th when they face Arsenal.

Though it is claimed negotiations are "complicated", it is added that talks have "progressed well" and a deal is now thought to be close. There could also be another new face in the dugout by then too, if all goes to plan.

Romano provides positive Van Nistelrooy to Man Utd update

That comes as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Van Nistelrooy is "tempted by Man United" as they look to make him a part of the club's coaching staff.

The ex-Manchester United striker was understood to be the subject of interest from Championship side Burnley, who were looking at the Dutchman to potentially replace Vincent Kompany in the Turf Moor hot seat.

However, any hope of that seems to have gone up in smoke, with Romano explaining that a move to Old Trafford is "advancing fast", which could see him turn down the change to manage his own side and instead join compatriot Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy scored 150 times in 219 appearances for the Red Devils, and United fans will be hoping that his arrival will allow them to get the most out of young talent Rasmus Hojlund, who blew hot and cold last season.

Sourav Ganguly says Australia tour on; positive about India players' families allowed on tour

“Still in discussions how to get the bio part and medical parts stronger,” he says

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Oct-2020The BCCI is yet to send a formal approval to Cricket Australia on the schedule for India’s upcoming tour of Australia, but the Indian board president Sourav Ganguly has pointed out that Indian team will be travelling to Sydney immediately after the IPL which will finish on November 10. Sydney will be India’s first destination, where they will contest the ODI and T20I series against Australia. The white-ball segment, featuring three ODIs and as many T20Is, will be followed by the four-Test series, starting with the pink-ball match in Adelaide from December 17.Both CA and BCCI have engaged in multiple meetings and discussions in the past several months, with the Covid-19 pandemic imposing severe restrictions on the travel arrangements. One of the BCCI’s conditions was that it wanted the Indian players to train while serving the mandatory two-week quarantine period upon reaching Australia. However, some of the state governments in Australia did not want to relax the guidelines owing to public health safety until the New South Wales government recently agreed to allow the teams to train while in quarantine.”So far it (the tour) is [going] ahead,” Ganguly told the on Monday. “The initial part will be in Sydney. We are still in discussions how to get the bio part and medical parts stronger, because it’s a long tour but I am told Australia is Covid-free at the moment, there aren’t many cases.”ALSO READ: Victoria Premier ‘very confident’ over Boxing Day crowd at MCGGanguly also said the BCCI was confident that players’ families will be allowed to be accommodated in the biosecure bubble. Barring Indian support staff and the two Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari, the rest of the players have been in the UAE for the IPL since the third week of August. Most players have been living in the IPL bubble without their families and with another long tour in Australia, Ganguly said the BCCI had requested CA to accordingly allow them to join the tour. Entry of foreign nationals into Australia is the responsibility of the federal government – although individual states had to give approval to be the first port of entry – as New South Wales has done.Ganguly, though, sounded positive about the families being allowed on the tour. “I don’t see a reason why the families won’t be allowed to come. The Australian cricket board is trying to accommodate the families. It should be okay.”However, he did not want to speculate on the India captain Virat Kohli potentially missing out one out of the two Tests – in Sydney and Brisbane – in the new year, as he and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child. “This is a personal question. I don’t like to comment and I have not asked him,” Ganguly said.

Both Ronaldo and Messi are heading towards the end of their phenomenal careers after dominating world football for the last two decades. The two superstars have won 13 of their last 15 Ballons d'Or, the top prize awarded to the best player on the planet. However, a new index by University of Oxford mathematician Dr Tom Crawford and Live Score has revealed which players are set to battle it out to succeed Ronaldo and Messi as the new GOAT.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Crawford has produced a mathematical model called the G.O.A.T. Index 2.0 in a bid to discover the next best player in the world. The model analyses the achievements and potential of global footballers under the age of 25 and offers a ranking dependent on various metrics such as goals, titles and career milestones. The research also looks at the potential of players using a sophisticated comparative analysis of Messi and Ronaldo’s careers to produce a final score.

  • WHAT THE RESEARCH SAID

Dr Crawford's model has found that Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is currently top of the index with a score of 86%. He's followed, perhaps surprisingly, by Julian Alvarez (84%) and then Jude Bellingham (82%). Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland (81%) is in fourth spot, ahead of Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr (68%) and Rodrygo (64%), and Phil Foden (63%).

  • WHAT DR CRAWFORD SAID

He said: "As a massive football fan, I’ve watched Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi battle it out for many years. It’s now incredibly exciting to identify who of the next generation will take their place at the very top of the game, as a new debate grips fans. It’s no surprise to see players like Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham come out on top of my algorithm, but to also see perhaps more unexpected players is really exciting and I can’t wait to see what the future truly holds for the sport."

Southampton plotting move for "outstanding" £9k-a-week international

Southampton are plotting a move for an "outstanding" £9,000-a-week international during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Southampton transfer news

Saints are preparing for life back in the Premier League and Russell Martin will be well aware that significant reinforcements are needed in his squad. All three promoted clubs returned to the Championship in 2023/24, highlighting the huge step up in quality in the top flight.

Ryan Fraser proved to be a good loan signing from Newcastle United, and now a permanent switch to St Mary's looks to be on the cards. The Scot scored six goals in the Championship this season, also netting twice in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Union de Santa Fe teenager Jeronimo Domina has been linked with a summer move to Southampton, with a bid made for the "talented" youngster, and Ben Brereton Diaz is also a rumoured target, too. The 25-year-old scored six times in 14 Premier League matches for Sheffield United in 2023/24, showing that he can be a force in a team battling near the bottom.

Jack Clarke is another player who could potentially move to Southampton in the coming months, with former Saints player Carlton Palmer talking up a move for the Sunderland ace recently: "I think it's almost certain to happen. Harte has repeatedly said that the choice would be there for him to move on. I think there will be a lot of interest. Clarke's been a consistent performer for Sunderland, and now it's time for him to move on and see if he can take it up to that next level in playing in the Premier League."

Southampton want "outstanding" player

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Southampton are among the clubs interested in signing Joe Rodon this summer, with Ipswich Town also mentioned as possible suitors:

"Rodon has attracted attention from elsewhere and two of the teams who went up ahead of Leeds – Southampton and Ipswich, are both understood to be considering moves of their own for the 44-times capped Wales international."

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

Rodon could represent a fantastic option for Southampton ahead of next season, having impressed so much for Leeds on loan from Tottenham. In fact, the 44-cap Wales international won more aerial duels per game (2.9) than Taylor Harwood-Bellis (1.9) in 2023/24, and more than any Saints player for that matter. His tally of 4.4 clearances per match was also superior to the latter's 3.3.

Former Ipswich striker Alex Mathie was full of praise for the 26-year-old earlier in the campaign, saying he has what it takes to be a success in the Premier League: "It’s not been Ipswich’s day today. Joe Rodon has been outstanding at the back [for Leeds]. He looks like a Premier League defender."
