  • Chelsea hold a long-standing interest in Bonmati
  • Were ready to put in a historic bid for the Ballon d'Or winner
  • The midfielder snubbed the Blues to continue at Barca
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bonmati has entered the final year of her contract with the Blaugranas but has reached an agreement to ink a renewal which could potentially make her the highest-paid player of the side. She has been at Camp Nou since the age of 13 and is set to continue her journey at the Catalan club in the future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, English giants, Chelsea were ready to break the bank for Bonmati by triggering her €3 million (£2.53m/3.32m) release clause – which would have made her the most expensive signing in the history of women's football. But the player rebuffed the approaches and placed her trust in the sporting project at Barcelona which has helped her scale the heights of success.

  • WHAT CHRISTIAN MARTIN SAID

In an interview on Catalunya Radio'sprogramme, Bonmati's agent Cristian Martin revealed: "Chelsea were willing to pay the €3m termination clause. That Barça can compete with offers of this calibre shows you that, instead of lowering the women's budget, it is the other way around. In addition, Barça wants to continue to capitalise on the hegemony it has. It is consolidating its hegemony and Aitana's role within Barca is also being consolidated."

However, Martin has warned that it would be a challenge for the Spanish league to compete with the financial muscle of WSL clubs in the future and Barcelona are well aware of the consequences. They have already lost forward Mariona Caldentey to Arsenal this summer after she refused to extend her contract and other stars could follow suit.

"The risk is that over the years the Spanish League will not improve and that this will not let it compete with the English clubs. The players may have new ambitions, as has happened with Mariona this season," he said.

Southampton could seal "monstrous" ace who’d star alongside Lallana

Southampton coolly and confidently beat Leeds United in one of the most pressurised one-off games in football, winning 1-0 in the Championship play-off final to secure their Premier League status again.

Russell Martin's Saints didn't fluke the slim victory, frustrating and getting under the skin of Daniel Farke's out-of-sorts Whites throughout, whilst also being able to deliver the killer blow when needed courtesy of Adam Armstrong firing home unmarked.

Now, the summer suddenly starts to look very intriguing and interesting for the newly promoted side with a whole host of impressive names now being linked with a switch to St. Mary's to have a go at top-flight football.

Adam Lallana, who was formerly a Southampton youth product, is edging closer to a return – according to reports – and he could be partnered in the centre of the park with this gem if another deal comes to fruition.

Southampton eyeing up permanent capture

According to Southampton Echo journalist Alfie House, Martin's men are very much keen on tieing down Flynn Downes to a permanent deal on the South Coast after an exceptional loan spell this season.

House further states that the Saints will also aim to sign Ryan Fraser on a permanent deal, who has managed 11 goal contributions on loan from Newcastle United in his own right, with Southampton showing they mean business attempting to get so many captures done so early on.

Downes could form an electric duo with Lallana in central midfield for the newly promoted outfit, with the current West Ham United man deployed as a slick operator of the ball who rarely makes a mistake, whilst the now 36-year-old has more of an eye for goal going off his previous Saints exploits.

How Downes and Lallana could feature together

Bagging 60 goals and picking up 45 assists from 265 appearances last time around on the South Coast, there could be some apprehension from Southampton supporters that Lallana might well taint his legendary status at the club so late into his playing days.

Yet, his versatility to play all across the midfield, and even as a winger if necessary, means he will be a useful utility option for the group, and a figure that will be vital for the likes of Downes who aren't as experienced with what is required in the cut and thrust of the top division.

As can be seen by glancing at the table above, Lallana and Downes would complement each other well next season with Downes shining in certain aspects – such as tackles and interceptions – compared to his more experienced counterpart shining going forward in shot-creating actions and touches in the attacking penalty area.

Martin will want the 25-year-old to continue playing with this grit present in his game in the Premier League, having described his star loanee as being "monstrous" earlier in the season for the sheer amount of tackles he managed in a game versus Birmingham City, on top of his composure to rarely misplace a pass.

It was evident in the play-off final as well, seen in this crunching tackle from Downes to kill the Whites coming forward, to ensure Southampton gained a foothold in key moments.

Lallana did only manage to pick up a solitary assist last season donning his now old Brighton and Hove Albion colours, but his game could be raised knowing he's back at his beloved Saints.

It will be an entertaining campaign for those on the South Coast to hopefully savour, as many new faces get lined up to join the ranks.

FAQs: How Australia's limited-overs tour to England will happen

From when the squad flies out to if players can train straightaway after reaching England, we answer all your queries

Andrew McGlashan14-Aug-2020

Mitchell Starc prepares to bowl during an Australia nets session for NSW-based players•Getty Images

When does the squad fly out?The 21-man squad, along with coaches and support staff will come from around Australia and link up in Perth for a direct chartered flight to London on August 23 which avoids the need for any international stopovers on route which may have complicated the journey. They will arrive in London the following day and immediately transfer to the County Ground at Derby which will be their first biosecure base for the tour. The ground has been used by Pakistan and the England Women’s team this season. How have the players been getting ready? The Australia selectors named a 26-man squad last month so that those in the frame could start to prepare. However, things have differed state-to-state because of the various levels of Covid-19 restrictions in place around Australia. Melbourne is currently in a Stage 4 lockdown after a spike in number of cases, which has made things more challenging for Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell. The New South Wales-based Australia players have trained away from their state team-mates and been told to avoid public places – such as cafes and restaurants – in recent weeks to minimise the risks. In other states it’s been more like normal pre-season. South Australia had nets in Adelaide on Friday and Marnus Labuschagne, the only Queensland player in the squad, made 92 when the state players trialled the Hundred format recently. Can Australia train straightaway?Yes, once they shake off the jetlag, they’ll be straight into preparing for the internationals. Because they are moving into a biosecure environment, plus the fact there is an approved air bridge between Australia and the UK, it means they won’t be confined to their rooms for a quarantine period on arrival. The reason they won’t go straight to the Ageas Bowl, which hosts the T20Is, is that England’s Test series against Pakistan isn’t due to finish until August 25. That tour then returns to Old Trafford, the other major biosecure venue, for the T20Is so Australia need a base for a few days before heading to the Ageas Bowl on August 27.ALSO READ: Warner, Smith, Maxwell, Cummins set to miss start of IPL 2020How will Australia prepare?Like West Indies and Pakistan, it will be with intra-squad matches (only Ireland, who played England Lions, have faced genuine opposition). Australia are due to play three T20 and one 50-over warm-up before facing England. They are taking 21 players with them which isn’t quite enough for a proper 11-a-side match, so there will need to be some creativity in the games themselves, but if the intra-squad match before last year’s Ashes is any indication, they could still be lively with established players up against those looking to make an impression. So what about the internationals? They will come in two batches, beginning with the T20Is on September 4, 6 and 8 before the squads relocate to Manchester for the ODIs, which are part of the World Cup Super League, at Old Trafford on September 11, 13 and 16. That journey between the venues will be under strict biosecure protocols as well, which is where Jofra Archer found himself in trouble earlier in the season after a detour home. The fact the two grounds have hotels onsite has been a key factor in the ECB managing to pull together this season.Remind me, when did Australia last play? The men were last in action on March 13 when the world was already changing. They played a behind-closed-doors ODI against New Zealand at the SCG – so were the first team to experience what has become the norm, for now at least – before that series was called off the next day when New Zealand had to return home due to borders being closed. Although they reached the World Cup semi-finals a little over a year ago, Australia’s ODI form has been very patchy with just two wins in seven matches since then. However, they have had much more success in T20Is and were shaping as one of the favourites for the now-postponed T20 World Cup. Going back to February 2019, they have won nine of their last 11 T20Is.What happens after the tour? This is where things get a bit complicated again and there are still some aspects to be confirmed. The players who take up their IPL deals will be dropped off in the UAE (Australia and England players will share the same flight) from which point on they come under the umbrella of the IPL’s protocols. The remaining Australia players and staff will continue back to Perth where, under Australia government regulations, they will have to quarantine for 14 days. CA hopes they will be able to negotiate that players will be able to train during that period but that’s an ongoing negotiation with the Western Australia government. It would be especially problematic for the pacemen if they weren’t able to keep their bowling loads up. After that period, they will be able to rejoin their states but it is likely they will miss some early-season games if the summer gets up and running on schedule.

CPL 2020: Kieron Pollard's 28-ball 72 extends Trinbago Knight Riders' unbeaten run

When he came to the crease, his team needed 87 off 44 balls with five wickets in hand

Karthik Krishnaswamy29-Aug-2020T20 has evolved to the extent that teams now back themselves to chase two runs a ball over the last eight – or even last ten – overs of matches. Those sorts of chases, however, usually involve flat pitches and line-ups packed with hitting talent. On Saturday, Trinbago Knight Riders probably wouldn’t have backed themselves when Kieron Pollard walked to the crease on a slow Queen’s Park Oval pitch with 87 runs needed from 44 balls, and five wickets in hand. This was a Knight Riders line-up that lacked Sunil Narine at the top and Dwayne Bravo in the middle. This was a pitch on which Lendl Simmons, the batsman at the other end when Pollard came in, had hit three sixes but no other boundaries while scoring 31 off 26 balls.Simmons fell soon after Pollard came in, in the 15th over, for 32 off 29. That over, bowled by Mitchell Santner, and the 16th, bowled by Rashid Khan, brought the Knight Riders only six runs in total. That left them 66 to get off 24 balls.Only a handful of players are capable of pulling off such a task, and Pollard has shown repeatedly – despite having been written off on multiple occasions – that he’s one of them. This, given the modest support available to him from the other end, would be one of his best knocks if he could pull it off, and he did, laying waste to the Tridents’ death bowlers as if he were a 16-year-old ringer in an Under-12s game, launching nine massive sixes in a 28-ball 72 to ensure the Knight Riders stretched their perfect start to the tournament into their sixth game. He made 72 off 28 balls. When Pollard was at the crease, the batsmen at the other end, plus extras, combined to score 7 off 12 balls.Kieron Pollard clubs one over long-on•Randy Brooks – CPL T20 / GettyPatriots’ allrounders come to the foreBefore Pollard’s innings, a different T20 game took place, and it would be prudent to note at the outset that Pollard played a key role in that game too. With Dwayne Bravo absent, he assumed the role of slower-ball specialist, mixing up his pace, changing his angles constantly – going over and around the wicket every alternate ball against the left-handers – sending down four overs – including the 16th and 20th of the Tridents’ innings – and conceding only 27 runs. That apart, though, the most influential performers were the Tridents’ allrounders. They’d begun sluggishly with the bat, but Ashley Nurse, Rashid and Santner – spin bowlers primarily, but excellent hitters at the death too – clattered a combined 39 off 18 balls to give them a more than fighting total of 148.Jason Holder, the Tridents’ premier allrounder, had failed with the bat, but he got his short ball to behave unpredictably off the pitch and delivered a double-wicket maiden in the second over of the chase. Rashid then bowled a single-wicket maiden, and the Knight Riders ended their Powerplay 27 for 3. Santner, for his part, used his seam-up variation cleverly and kept forcing the batsmen to hit the ball where he wanted them to hit it.Nurse had made an important contribution with the bat, but his one over went for 13, with Simmons launching two half-volleys for big sixes. When not handed freebies on a platter, though, Simmons struggled to score quickly, and with the rest of the top order utterly failing to get going, the Tridents were soon in a seemingly unassailable position. Seemingly.Enter PollardHayden Walsh, the Patriots’ fourth spinner, was also having a pretty good game. When he dismissed Akeal Hosein in the 13th over, his figures read 2.4-0-12-1. Not bad at all. But his first ball to Pollard was a sign of what was to come. It may have been a pretty good wrong’un to most other batsmen, but Pollard’s reach allows spinners only the smallest margin for error, and he slog-swept it for an emphatic first-ball six. When the 17th over began, Pollard had only hit two sixes – the other a ridiculously effortless loft over long-off, off Rashid – in 13 balls. By the time it ended, he had hit four more. With each, Pollard made the young legspinner doubt himself a little more, and by the time the over ended he was firing in quickish darts with little spin on them. That isn’t to say he would have held Pollard back if he’d bowled differently, of course. The contest now took on an entirely different complexion, and the next over brought the Knight Riders the sort of luck a winning team often needs in T20. Sikandar Raza had sacrificed his wicket off the first ball, just to get Pollard on strike, but only two runs came off the next three balls as Raymon Reifer tied Pollard and Khary Pierre down with his left-arm angle and changes of pace. The fifth ball was a pretty good ball too, a slower bouncer, but a top-edge got Pollard four runs. Then came a leg-side swipe off a blockhole ball on the stumps – it was a bit of a miscue, off the inside half of the bat, but all that mattered was that it sped away for four. It also brought up Pollard’s fifty, off 22 balls. The Knight Riders needed 31 now, off 12 balls, and there was nothing fortuitous about Pollard’s next two significant interventions. Holder had set a field for the wide yorker, and he got his line right and his length almost right – but almost isn’t enough sometimes. He erred in both line and length next ball, and Pollard launched him for another big straight six. There was still one final twist, of course. Pollard lifted the first ball of the final over beyond the long-on boundary to bring the equation down to 9 off 5, but was run out next ball, Holder firing in a spectacular throw – no bounce, straight into the keeper’s gloves – from long-on, to catch him short of retaining the strike. It could have gone either way, but the big error came from the bowler, Reifer, who sent down a wide and possibly high full-toss with 7 needed off 3. Pierre slashed it over point for six, and all but sealed a wildly improbable win.

Arteta must finally axe "unreal" Arsenal star worth 2x more than Trossard

As things stand, Arsenal are still locked in an incredible battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title, although with their fate out of their hands, their chances of emerging victorious aren't great.

However, with the summer transfer window just around the corner, Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar and Co can't afford to rest on their laurels. They have to be proactive and bring in the right additions to take them to the next level, though they'll also have to ditch a few players in the process.

It's a cutthroat game, but with major honours on the line, decisions have to be made, and based on recent reports, the club may be willing to axe a star who's worth significantly more than Leandro Trossard.

Gabriel Jesus' Arsenal career

The player in question is Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus, who joined the Gunners just under two years ago in a £45m transfer from now title rivals City.

His time with the north Londoners got off to a flying start. In the months before the winter break for the 2022 World Cup, he had five goals and five assists to his name in just 14 Premier League appearances, meaning he was averaging a goal involvement every 1.4 games.

However, while in Qatar, the talented striker suffered a severe knee injury that saw him miss a significant part of the season, and by the end of his first campaign in the capital, he had scored just 11 goals and provided seven assists in 33 games.

So far this year, the 27-year-old has scored eight goals and provided eight assists in 34 appearances, but crucially, he has seemingly lost his place in the team as the starting number nine to summer signing Kai Havertz.

Since February 24th, the São Paulo-born star has started just four out of 14 games, two of which have come on the left, whereas the German has started all 14 matches, 12 of which have been as the number nine.

In all, the "unreal" Jesus, as previously described by Rio Ferdinand, seems to be losing his grip on a place in the starting lineup, and with reports from The Athletic earlier this month suggesting the club might be willing to let him go, it might be time they did, especially as his value is relatively high.

Gabriel Jesus' valuation in 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Jesus' current valuation is €80m, which is around £69m, making him the joint-fourth most valuable player at the club alongside his national teammate and namesake, Gabriel.

Arsenal Valuations via the CIES Football Observatory

This valuation is also twice as high as Trossard's, whom the CIES currently value at €40m, which is about £34m. That might sound a little off considering the sheer efficiency the Belgian has operated with since his £27m arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion last January, but there are likely a couple of reasons.

First, while the former Seagulls ace has scored a whopping 16 goals and provided two assists in just 44 appearances this season, he is set to turn 30 at the end of this year, and while that isn't particularly old in the outside world, in football, it is.

The Athletic published an article in 2021 that examined when players in each position tend to hit the peak of their powers. For a winger, that age is around 26, meaning that as effective as the Waterschei-born ace has been in red and white, he is likely to start becoming less so sooner rather than later.

The second probable cause for his lower value is his lack of experience on the biggest stage. For example, before moving to N5, the former City ace had played 38 games in the Champions League and made it to the final in 2021, whereas the 33-capped Belgian's only experience in the competition has come in north London, and at the top level, experience counts.

Ultimately, with Jesus holding a significantly higher market value than Trossard while at the same time being unable to break into the first team, it's probably the right time for Arsenal to say their thanks for the great performances and accept the highest offer.

Man Utd keen on signing "immense" £51m partner for Martinez

It ended in FA Cup glory, but there is no getting away from the fact that Manchester United did not have a particularly good season this year.

Injuries may have ravaged Erik ten Hag's side, but their eighth-placed finish in the Premier League was entirely justified.

Alongside having just the ninth-best attack in the league, the Red Devils conceded a whopping 58 goals, or 29 more than second-placed Arsenal.

So, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co have a lot of work to do this summer, but it looks like they're already on the right track, as the latest player touted for a move to Old Trafford could be the perfect long-term partner for Lisandro Martínez.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from Portuguese outlet A Bola, Manchester United are one of several clubs interested in signing Sporting CP's Ousmane Diomande this summer.

Alongside United, the report names Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle as the teams keen on the Ivorian international, although the Red Devils' have supposedly earmarked him as a priority replacement for Raphaël Varane, who announced his departure from the club last month.

The report claims that the Lisbon-based side have set the bar for offers at around €50m to €60m, which works out to be about £43m to £51m, which may prove to be a fair price in the long run.

Ousmane Diomande for Sporting against Benfica.

It might be challenging to get over the line, but with Varane gone, the club need a new long-term defensive partner for Martinez, and Diomande might be the perfect candidate.

Why Diomande would be the ideal Martinez partner

Described as a "hybrid between Gabriel and Saliba" by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Diomande would be the ideal defender to start alongside Martinez for several reasons in the foreseeable future.

The first is rather straightforward, but it does make a difference: his preferred foot. The 20-year-old centre-back is primarily right-footed, meaning that he'd comfortably fit alongside the left-footed Argentine and help create a more balanced backline.

His underlying numbers are the second reason, as in a direct comparison with the United stars he doesn't look out of place in the slightest and even comes out on top in a number of metrics.

The last reason he'd be a brilliant addition to the back line is another simple one: his stature. As demonstrated by his individual statistics, the player Mango describes as "the perfect blend of a modern-day centre-back and a no-nonsense centre-back" wins significantly more aerial duels than 'the butcher' and could leverage his 6 foot 3 frame to counteract any drawbacks that come from the Argentine's height.
