CPL submits proposal to stage tournament in Trinidad

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) organisers have submitted a proposal to Keith Rowley, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, to stage the entirety of this year’s tournament in the country, starting in mid-August.Last week, Rowley told the local press that he was waiting for a formal approach from the CPL, but said his government was “cautiously optimistic” about hosting the tournament, subject to clearance from the country’s health authorities. As part of the proposal, the CPL has said it would want to host the entire tournament, comprising 34 matches, at Trinidad’s two main grounds, the Queen’s Park Oval and the Brian Lara Academy. Games might be played back-to-back on the same day at 10am and 6pm local time, meaning the tournament would be played over 25 days rather than last year’s 39. The tournament had initially been due to take place between August 19 and September 26.ALSO READ: CPL is the second-best T20 league after IPL – COO Pete RussellTournament officials hope that overseas players will be willing to participate, with the first round of international signings due to be announced next week, and remain optimistic that some fans will be able to attend games while adhering to social-distancing protocols.Pete Russell, CPL’s chief operating officer, has said that officials will hold a virtual meeting with cabinet ministers on Thursday, June 4, in order to talk through details such as possible quarantine periods upon arrival in Trinidad, health protocols, and any assurances that need to be given.”We’re ready to play,” Russell told ESPNcricinfo. “If you get the second wave that everyone hopes won’t come, we’d be back to square one, but the only other thing that will derail us is the government not allowing us to play for safety reasons. It’s just a case of getting the green light from them.”The cricketing part of the Caribbean has avoided the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic, with death tolls remaining low after governments imposed strict lockdowns before the virus could spread. The region’s relative success in managing the pandemic has raised hopes that the CPL might be able to proceed, and the tournament has appointed a medical board of four doctors who are putting health protocols in place. The Caribbean has already hosted competitive cricket in the form of the Vincy T10 Premier League at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, where there were sanitising stations on and off the field.ALSO READ: Leg shakes and sanitising stations – cricket gets used to the new normalUnder current plans, all six CPL teams would stay in the same hotel in Trinidad, with each team being cordoned off and treated as a single household. Within that household of around 25, teams would be broken down into ‘clusters’ of four or five, within which social distancing could be relaxed. Players and support staff would also be subject to daily temperature checks, as well as viral and antibody tests both in the days before they would fly to Trinidad and on arrival. While organisers had initially discussed the possibility of hosting games at Kensington Oval in Barbados, Trinidad is currently “Plan A” on account of the fact it has two international-standard grounds, which would reduce the prospect of pitches becoming worn and slow by the end of the tournament. Playing games in the morning will also be an attractive commercial proposition: the CPL’s business model relies heavily on India for broadcast revenue and sponsorship, and a 10am start time in Trinidad (7.30pm IST) would suit that market. The second game would be played at some point in the evening, with 6pm the provisional local start time. However, the government approval remains the main stumbling block. “We don’t have a proper handle yet but we are cautiously optimistic if the CPL authorities would like to host the tournament in Trinidad,” Rowley had said last week.Rowley said that once the proposal was submitted, the country’s chief medical’s officer would need to give his approval, with public safety the top priority. “We have to be careful… but we want to look at [staging the CPL] positively and we will,” he said.Russell admitted that the tournament will make a financial loss this year, but said that all six franchises had confirmed they wanted to take part after being given the option not to. “They want continuity, and they want their teams to be represented,” he said. “Our thought was that if we had the option to play, we should; it’s good for the Caribbean.”The Caribbean relies on tourism, that’s its bread and butter. So it needs to show the rest of the world that it’s open, and beaming live cricket around the world is a very good way of doing that.”While plans to allow fans into grounds remain at an early stage, the tournament’s organisers have developed various contingency plans for behind-closed-doors cricket. These include the possibility of having socially-distanced cheerleaders, LED screens with videos of fans, and playing stadium sounds on the global TV feeds even if no fans are physically present. With Cricket West Indies announcing last week that players across the region would be asked to take a temporary 50% pay cut, Russell said that the CPL felt a “sense of responsibility” to get players earning again following the lockdown.”These guys’ livelihoods have been decimated through no fault of their own,” he said. “CPL isn’t just about the guys who have their IPL riches, but it’s about the journeymen, and the up-and-coming players who want to make a name for themselves. It’s very important for the whole cricketing ecosystem in the Caribbean that we get it on and these guys can earn money.”

Spurs hit gold on "frightening" star who’s worth more than Son & Trossard

Tottenham Hotspur have not had a great deal of luck when it comes to managers in recent history, at least before the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, that is.

Following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, Daniel Levy turned to José Mourinho, but within less than two years, it was clear that the Special One wasn't quite so special anymore, and after an interim stint from Ryan Mason, fellow Portuguese coach Nunu Espírito Santo was brought in.

Now, while the former Chelsea boss was far from a success in N17, he lasted for at least two seasons.

Whereas, after just a few disastrous months in the job, Nuno was handed his P45; although he did get at least one decision right, as a player he brought in during his short tenure has seen his value soar over the last couple of years.

Pape Matar Sarr's Spurs career

Yes, the player in question is Senegalese midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, who joined Nuno's Lilywhites side in August 2021 for around £15m from Ligue 1 side FC Metz.

Pape Matar Sarr

The then-18-year-old spent the following season on loan with the French side, where he made 34 first-team appearances, scoring one goal and providing three assists, before joining up with Antonio Conte's Spurs for the 22/23 campaign.

Unfortunately, the incredibly talented midfielder would have to wait until January 1st to make his first-team debut under the Italian's watch.

Pape Matar Sarr for Tottenham.

He came off the bench in a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, but just two weeks later, he would make his full debut, starting at the base of midfield in the North London Derby.

In all, he ended the campaign with 14 appearances for the senior side, in which he registered his first assist, and while the club were in a sorry state off the back of Conte's sacking, he was a glimmer of hope for fans to hang onto.

This year, under the progressive tutelage of Postecoglou, the 21-year-old has become a far more regular fixture in the team. With one game left this season, he has made 34 appearances for the Australian, in which he has scored three goals and registered three assists.

The club were so impressed with the youngster's ability that they offered him a brand new £70k-per-week contract in January that'll keep him in N17 until June 2030.

So, thus far, the Thiaroye-born gem is proving U23 scout Antonio Mango correct in his assertion that he's "so good at football it's frightening."

Understandably, this incredible form and promise have seen the midfielder's valuation balloon recently, and as things stand, he's worth more than some outstanding players.

Pape Matar Sarr's valuation in 2024

According to CIES Football Observatory, Sarr is now worth €50m, which is around £43m, or £28m more than he cost Spurs in 2021.

If that wasn't good enough, his new valuation also makes him the club's most valuable midfielder and means, notably, he is worth more than Son Heung-min and Leandro Trossard.

The Lilywhites captain is currently priced at €30m – £26m – by CIES, while the Gunners' Belgian goalscorer is valued slightly higher at €40m, which is £34m or still £9m less than the Senegalese international.

This price discrepancy likely isn't down to the wingers' performance this season, as the South Korean has racked up 17 goals and nine assists in 35 games, while the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has 17 goals and two assists in 45 matches, but more about their ages.

For example, Son is currently 31, and Trossard is set to turn 30 this year, so regardless of how effective they currently are, they lack much resale value as, within a few years, their output will start to drop noticeably, as explained by The Athletic's dive into the age players peak depending on position, and for wingers, it's 26.

Ultimately, Spurs have a real diamond of a player in Sarr, and while he isn't quite having the impact on games that his captain is at the moment, his importance to Postecoglou's system is only likely to grow, and his soaring valuation is just a reflection of that.

  • Chanda is out for the season following an Olympics
  • Pride say Chanda was asked to play and train after injury.
  • Not the only issue being pointed at Zambia.
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pride General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations Haley Carter has filed a grievance with FIFA against the Football Association of Zambia on behalf of new signing and midfielder Grace Chanda, according to reports.

The NWSL is filing the grievance due to "failure to provide a reasonable standard of care for player health and safety," according to African media outlet Bolanews.

Chanda signed with Orlando on May 30 and was set to make her first appearance with the club following the Olympics. With the 27-year-old suffering a ruptured quadriceps tendon against the U.S. in Zambia's opening match, she is out for the season.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chanda's injury robs the first-place Pride of an addition they were counting to build upon an impressive season. Chanda has scored 19 goals in 31 appearances with the national team.

"[Chanda was asked] to continue training and play in the opening match post-injury," Carter posted on X.

Carter also added the following via a statement earlier this month to ESPN: "We are incredibly disappointed for Grace at this injury and how it occurred….Fortunately, she is under the best possible care with our medical and performance teams here at the club and through Orlando Health. While her debut in purple will be later than planned, it's imperative we prioritize her health and welfare through a safe and responsible return to the pitch."

  • ZAMBIA'S ISSUES

This isn't the only controversy Zambia is accused of. Zambia's football operations were already being investigated due to allegations of misconduct involving head coach Bruce Mwape.

10 2007/08 Anniversary Puma

A unique but fabulous ‘split-shirt’ kicks this list off at 10. The white and baby-blue colour combination made by Puma celebrated Tottenham’s 125th anniversary.

Modelled by former striker Darren Bent in the image above, the kit sports a small collar, adding a distinctive quirk. It was actually only worn once during a thrilling encounter against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane in 2007.

The game finished 4-4 after Spurs overturned a three-goal deficit, thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Pascal Chimbonda, Robbie Keane and Younes Kaboul.

A fitting game for a memorable shirt.

9 2001/02 Away Adidas

A pale blue Adidas classic joins the list in ninth. The aesthetic sponsor, the v-neck collar and the retro feel of three stripes on the sleeves all make for a timeless beauty of a kit.

It was worn during Glenn Hoddle’s first full season in the dugout following his spell as Southampton boss. Hoddle led his side to a League Cup final that year, before suffering a heartbreaking defeat at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium against Blackburn Rovers.

8 2002-04 Home Kappa

The first home kit of the list. Tottenham were battling relegation during the 2003/04 campaign, but managed to avoid the drop, ultimately finishing 14th in what was a disappointing season.

Not only that, but they had to watch their bitter rivals Arsenal win the league title unbeaten that year.

It was a period to forget for Spurs fans, but certainly not the kit. The traditional colour combination of white and navy made for a clean look. Manufactured by Kappa, the strip exhibited holiday-makers Thomson on the front, whilst the coloured crew-neck collar broke up the all-white shirt pleasantly.

7 2004/05 Away Kappa

Another Kappa-made kit enters the rankings. After a troubling season prior, Martin Jol guided Spurs to a top-half finish after taking over from Jacques Santini in November 2004.

The solid navy-toned away strip, paired with white shorts, created a classy look. Michael Carrick (pictured above) embodied the smart shirt, personifying a cool, assured and elegant midfielder.

6 2016/17 Home Under Armour

This home jersey was worn during Spurs’ final season at White Hart Lane before moving to their new stadium which lies a five-minute walk away.

Under Armour did a fantastic job on this strip, coordinating the white and navy so seamlessly, yet keeping a minimalistic feel. The shades of gold throughout added a touch of class and mirrored the success on the pitch that year for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Tottenham remained unbeaten at home in the league and achieved their highest finish of the Premier League era, placing second on 86 points, and also finishing above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

5 1995-97 Third Pony

Certainly not for everybody, but there’s something about a yellow kit. Spurs finished a respectable 8th and 10th in this collared shirt under the stewardship of manager Gerry Francis.

The shield-like crest is a marvellous detail. It’s starting to become rather rare on modern football shirts, which is a real shame.

Its only let-down is the predominant Hewlett Packard sponsor, which feels a little in-your-face, for lack of a better phrase. But the manufacturers of the shirt Pony did a splendid job, with the collar a particular highlight.

4 1991-95 Away Umbro

Following on with the yellow theme, this kit notches just above the previous number due to its iconic and familiar sponsor, Holsten.

Pictured above, Teddy Sheringham models the gorgeous jersey made by Umbro and strikes a left-footed shot past the Lazio goalkeeper in the 1993 Makita tournament.

Spurs sported yellow for nearly all of the ’90s, either as an away or third shirt.

3 1991-94 Third Umbro

This eye-catching blue strip places third on the podium. Modelled by England international Darren Anderton above, the Umbro-made jersey displays a subtle outline on the upper chest spelling ‘Spurs’, which adds an unusual, but quirky detail to the collared classic.

The thin lines running down the shirt, coupled with the faint patterns in between, make this third kit a fun collectable for football fanatics.

2 1999-2001 Home Adidas

Another Holsten-sponsored kit enters the rankings. What is it about Spurs and Holsten? This home jersey has everything.

Adidas created a timeless classic that even today, could be worn as a casual fashionable top. The iconic three stripes running down the sleeves and shorts, paired with the bold, but aesthetically pleasing sponsor, make this one of Spurs’ best shirts of all time.

In this strip, George Graham’s side beat Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool at White Hart Lane during the 1999/00 campaign, finishing the season in 10th.

1 1994/95 Away Umbro

At number one is this navy and purple number worn by Jürgen Klinsmann in the image above. Made by Umbro, the stunning strip has become a trendy modern-day jersey, shelved at major outlets such as JD Sports.

Those available at the aforementioned retailer will be replicas, because you’ll be doing well if you’re lucky enough to own the authentic version. It’s become a very limited item.

A big well-done to Umbro and once again the shirt sponsor Holsten, which has featured predominantly on our list.

Mark Taylor raises prospect of Boxing Day Test being moved

Adelaide and Perth may be able to host larger crowds than Melbourne

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jun-2020Former Australia captain Mark Taylor has raised the prospect of the Australia-India Boxing Day Test being moved away from the MCG if other venues are able to host larger crowds.Although still six months away, the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Victoria – 75 were recorded on Monday – has brought into doubt when crowds will be able to return in the state.Adelaide and Perth have been talked of as alternatives for the Boxing Day encounter with both South Australia and Western Australia continuing to ease restrictions. Perth Stadium is set to be able to fill its 60,000 capacity for football matches from the middle of July while Adelaide Oval is able to host crowds of up to 25,000 – 50% of its capacity.”If you look at what’s happening around Australia, by Christmas time the MCG may only be able to host 10,000-20,000 people, which is not going to look great when you’ve got a real iconic Test match,” Taylor told Nine’s Sports on Sunday.”You move that match to Optus Stadium or even the Adelaide Oval, you’re going to get full venues. The Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium will be working hard to try and get that game because they would look better with full crowds.”While the prospects of the Australia-India series taking place have been promising for some time, there had been a talk of the possibility that it would have to be played behind closed doors – as will be the case when international cricket returns with the England-West Indies series next month – with India potentially using a single venue as a hub. However, as the Covid-19 situation improved in the country so too did the hopes of a traditional schedule although the situation in Victoria is a reminder of how quickly things can change. The current schedule has the series being played in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney with Perth hosting Afghanistan in late November but Cricket Australia had said all fixtures were subject to change. Western Australia though voiced their anger at not being given a lucrative India Test.Speaking last week, Australia captain Tim Paine said he hoped to be playing in front of crowds this season.”Given the current circumstances, I dare say everything is well and truly on the table. We are hopeful that everywhere we play come summer time, we would be able to have crowds,” he said. “How big they are, we don’t know, obviously. But it’s a difficult one for anyone to answer because there is so much changing week to week, day to day. Give it is three or four months, we just don’t know what it is going to look like.”Certainly, from a player’s point of view, we want to be playing in front of big crowds at the best venues and a big day like Boxing Day is something that everyone looks forward to and a big part of that is playing at the MCG.”Fingers crossed things are going well enough that we can do that but, as I said, we are spoilt for choice here in Australia with some world-class stadiums. If something had to change, then, again, we have plenty of options.”

'Difficult' – Newcastle boss Eddie Howe gives update on Magpies future amid England job links following frustrating transfer window

Eddie Howe admitted it is "difficult" at Newcastle but assured the Magpies that he is looking forward to a "long reign" amid England job links.

Newcastle were subdued in the marketHowe has had his "hands off" from transfer dealingsYet he has no qualms about continuing at St. James'WHAT HAPPENED?

Howe has been a subject of speculation regarding the England's national team manager position after Gareth Southgate stepped down following an agonising defeat in the European Championship final. However, Howe has always been quick to dismiss these rumours, emphasising that his commitment lies solely with Newcastle United.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

However, Newcastle have undergone notable changes at the boardroom level that might have impacted Howe's role at the club. Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, who had a strong working relationship with Howe, left after selling their stake. Their departure saw the arrival of Paul Mitchell as the new sporting director, with Darren Eales stepping in as CEO to take the lead in the club's operations. These changes have brought about a shift in how the club operates and Howe admitted that this summer's transfer window was the most "hands-off" experience he has had since taking charge of Newcastle in November 2021.

WHAT HOWE SAID

“You have to understand that in the majority of the other windows the whole structure of the club has been different so that is not necessarily a criticism of the structure we have now,” Howe said.

“There are different personalities and there’s a different way of working now. Yes, it probably has been the most hands off I’ve been, but that’s not necessarily a negative. It’s just a different way of working.”

When asked about his future at Newcastle, Howe provided a candid response.

“It’s difficult to ever – and this isn’t a loaded answer, by the way – give any reassurance on anything in football, but I absolutely love being Newcastle manager," he said. "I’m very, very proud to do it. “No part of me is thinking anything other than trying to beat Tottenham and looking, hopefully, to a long reign here.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Newcastle experienced a relatively quiet summer transfer window, with only a few additions to the squad. The Magpies secured Lewis Hall on a permanent deal from Chelsea, marking the most significant acquisition of the summer. Additionally, the club signed two outfield players: Lloyd Kelly, who joined on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth, and Will Osula, who was signed for £15 million ($20m) from Sheffield United. The other recruits included goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Clement must boldly drop Cantwell and unleash Rangers’ "real engine"

Glasgow Rangers have four games left of the 2023/24 season. If they could win all four, while hoping for a favour or two from the teams who will be playing their Old Firm rivals, then it could be a season to remember.

The Premiership title race could well be decided this afternoon as the Light Blues travel to Parkhead to play Celtic in the final derby clash of the season.

The previous meeting between the teams was a pulsating affair which finished 3-3 as the Gers grabbed what looked like an unlikely point following a last minute Rabbi Matondo equaliser.

Philippe Clement’s men will have to be so much better today, however, and eradicate the mistakes which have seen the club slip behind Celtic in recent weeks.

A 4-1 win was secured over Kilmarnock at Ibrox last week, but it wasn’t without its moments as the Ayrshire side took the lead during the first half.

The team got its act together in the second half, but might any of the starting XI be dropped ahead of the Old Firm clash this afternoon? As Todd Cantwell looked a little underwhelming at times.

Todd Cantwell's game in numbers vs Kilmarnock

The attacking midfielder was tasked with being the main creative force for the Light Blues against Derek McInnes’ men last weekend, but it took him a while to get into the game.

The Englishman did finish the game with an 88% pass success rate, while he made one key pass and took five shots, but overall, his attacking contributions were minimal, to say the least.

Indeed, Cantwell delivered six crosses during his 68 minutes on the field, but only one was accurate in finding a teammate, while he failed with his only dribble attempt and won just one of his four ground duels contested.

His display led Lewis Anderson of Glasgow World to give him a match rating of 6/10, claiming that the midfielder ‘got off to a slow start’ during the match.

It wasn’t his worst performance, far from it, but knowing that the club needed to secure all three points otherwise the title race was as good as over, Cantwell could have done much more during the first half.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Tom Lawrence came on for the former Norwich City gem with just over 20 minutes remaining, arguably making more of an impact in that time than Cantwell did all game.

Tom Lawrence's impact against Kilmarnock

The Welshman started on the bench, but with the score 2-1 to Rangers heading into the final quarter of the match, Lawrence was brought on in order to perhaps create a chance or two in order to add a couple more goals.

The substitution didn’t take long to pay off. A pass from Cyriel Dessers was a bit too heavy for Lawrence, yet his first touch took it through the legs of Stuart Findlay, he sent three defenders the wrong way with his second, before curling home a delightful effort behind the keeper with his third.

It was a goal to make any win more enjoyable, but it really took the wind out of Killie’s sails as the tie ended up finishing 4-1 to Rangers.

Lawrence also succeeded with 100% of his dribbles, made one key pass while taking three total shots during his cameo appearance.

It was certainly one of the best impact subs Clement has made in a while. The question now is, will he start against Celtic?

Why Tom Lawrence should be unleashed vs Celtic

Following an injury-disrupted debut season in Glasgow, Lawrence has managed to stay relatively fit during the current campaign.

The former Derby County gem has featured 31 times across all competitions, adding three goals and three assists during his spell on the pitch, giving Clement a reliable attacking option when needed.

Tom Lawrence

Lawrence didn’t cost a penny when Rangers signed him in 2022 and former professional Noel Whelan lauded the attacking midfielder upon his move, saying:

“I think Lawrence is an amazing player. He put the work in at Derby as they were going through a very bad period. I believe he’ll settle right in at Rangers. He was probably one of Derby’s best players for a number of years – with his assists, goals, and that box-to-box nature. He’s a real engine.”

It may have taken a year for the 30-year-old to secure consistent football at Ibrox, but he is finally showcasing his true abilities now Clement is able to call upon him.

Tom Lawrence

Among his teammates, Lawrence currently ranks seventh for goals and assists (five) in the top flight, along with ranking eighth for shots per game (1.8), seventh for big chances created (four) and tenth for key passes per game (1.1).

While on the surface these figures don’t appear to be outstanding, considering Lawrence has started just 11 times in the Premiership since the start of the campaign, averaging 51 minutes per game, the numbers begin to look more impressive.

Clement may well continue with Cantwell as his number ten against Celtic, using the Englishman from the start in the hopes that he can get into the groove early and create plenty of problems for their defence, utilising Lawrence as an impact sub like what he did last weekend.

If the Belgian has a change of heart, however, the £22k-per-week dynamo could certainly offer something slightly different should he be given the nod to play from the first whistle.

Regardless of who makes the starting XI, the whole team will need to be firing on all cylinders right from the get-go this afternoon, otherwise there could be a repeat of what happened at Ibrox last month.

If Clement can keep his charges composed in the first half and create a few chances, the Ibrox side should have a good chance to win the game.

With just two wins since 2010 at Parkhead, it won't be easy, but if these players want to be remembered in years to come, winning games like this is what could earn them legend status.

Fabrizio Romano teases Tottenham move for £56m defender after 2023 talks

Fabrizio Romano has refused to rule Tottenham out in the race for a £56 million defender this summer, coming after he was actually "in talks" to join last year.

Postecoglou admits Spurs could sign another centre-back

Ange Postecoglou, speaking to the press last month, admitted that his side could actually end up going for another centre-back when the window reopens.

Tottenham may have tabled a bid for £24m Kane replacement in recent days

Spurs are eager to bring in his successor.

While the Lilywhites are thought to be after a new striker and potential Harry Kane replacement, as well as Spurs targeting a new winger and centre-midfielder, it is believed another central defender is high on the agenda despite Radu Dragusin's arrival.

The Romanian arrived from Genoa for around £25 million in the January window, and has provided back-up to star defender Micky van de Ven at the heart of Postecoglou's defence. However, some believe van de Ven may well be used as a wildcard left-back option after Destiny Udogie's season-ending injury, so perhaps we could be seeing more of Dragusin in the final few games.

In any case, Postecoglou was forthright in admitting to Tottenham's desire to sign yet another new centre-half later this year: “If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, the Tottenham manager said.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Before Spurs completed a deal for van de Ven last summer, they were heavily linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, who supporters may well remember. The Burkina Faso international, now fresh off the back of a title-winning season at Leverkusen, was "in talks" to join Spurs last year according to Fabrizio Romano at the time.

Romano teases potential Spurs move for Tapsoba

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano has teased that Spurs could be back in the running for Tapsoba after scouts from England were sent to watch the "frightening" defender recently – rumoured to cost around £56 million.

“Scouts from three top clubs were in attendance to watch Edmond Tapsoba in yesterday’s [Mondays] game for Bayer Leverkusen away to Borussia Dortmund," said Romano.

"The centre-back looks like he could be one to watch for this summer as he’s attracting interest, though it’s still early in this story. Tottenham also showed an interest in Tapsoba in the past, but let’s see if they enter the running again."
