Spurs could find Udogie replacement in their "best academy defender"

A key figure in Tottenham Hotspur's resurgence this season under Ange Postecoglou has been promising defender, Destiny Udogie, with the 20-year-old having slotted in smoothly at N17 after spending last season back on loan at Udinese.

Having originally been signed on a £15m deal from the Serie A side in 2022, it had been a frustrating wait for Spurs supporters to see the Italian in action, although that patience has paid off with the left-back now flourishing for the Premier League high-flyers.

Described as "sickeningly good" by footballJOE's Hunter Godson, the Verona native has already recorded two assists from nine league games so far this term, while also averaging an impressive 2.8 tackles per game – third in the squad behind only Pedro Porro and Yves Bissouma for that latter metric.

Destiny Udogie

Seemingly a player who "has it all", in the words of national team boss, Luciano Spalletti, the two-cap international is rightly earning hefty praise at present, hence the potential concern over his relatively early withdrawal against Fulham on Monday night.

As Postecoglou subsequently stated, Udogie was only substituted due to possible fatigue and "tightness", yet it does expose the need for a reliable understudy to the youngster in that left-sided berth.

The possible replacements for Destiny Udogie at left-back

In that 2-0 win earlier this week, the 6 foot 2 maestro was replaced by Emerson Royal for the final half hour or so, albeit with the Brazilian hardly the most natural solution in that role as the right-footer typically lines up on the opposite side.

The Lilywhites do have the versatile Micky van de Ven who can slot into that full-back berth if required, although it would seemingly make little sense to shift the towering Dutchman across, particularly with senior alternatives at centre-back so limited.

The standout replacement for Udogie would seemingly be long-serving stalwart, Ben Davies, with the experienced Welshman comfortable operating at full-back, wing-back or on the left of a back three, having proven a useful squad option over the years with over 300 appearances for the club to date.

Ben Davies for Spurs

That being said, the 30-year-old did struggle in a rare outing against the Cottagers in the Carabao Cup back in August, with 90min's Tom Gott writing that his 'limited technical ability clearly hamstrung Tottenham', while talkSPORT's Gabby Agbonlahor stated post-match that he is simply "not good enough any more".

With that in mind, Postecoglou may wish to consider a player who is currently thriving in the academy set-up in the form of Charlie Sayers, with the 19-year-old certainly one to keep an eye on.

A look at Tottenham's academy sensation, Charlie Sayers

While also comfortable at centre-back, the teenager has largely operated in a left-back berth so far this season both at Premier League 2 level and in the EFL Trophy, notably starting in the 5-0 thrashing of Colchester United in the latter competition.

That outing saw the young Englishman showcase his impressive quality on the ball after enjoying a solid 89% pass accuracy rate from his 92 touches, while also completing four of his eight attempted long balls and creating one big chance.

The youngster has also enjoyed prior experience at senior level during his time at former club Southend United – for whom he made six first-team appearances – having been lavished with praise by manager Phil Brown at the time:

"I think Charlie Sayers has been outstanding and you have to say he has a career ahead of him, there’s no doubt about it."

Having been pushing to be the "first choice left-back" at Roots Hall, Sayers has since gone on to impress after joining Spurs in 2021, with respected insider John Wenham describing him as arguably the "best academy defender at the club".

The next step now will be for the high-potential talent to live up to the billing by making his mark at first-team level, with any potential absence for Udogie in the coming weeks or months potentially set to be his route into Postecoglou's plans, ahead of Davies.

Kylian Mbappe proves Luis Enrique wrong again! Star's late magic saves PSG from embarrassing defeat after being dropped against Clermont Foot ahead of Champions League crunch tie against Barcelona

Kylian Mbappe assisted Goncalo Ramos' late goal as PSG fought back for a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Clermont Foot.

Clermont Foot took the lead after 30 minutes, Habib Keita's deflected strike looping over reserve goalkeeper Arnau Tenas and into the net. The Parisians thought they had an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but debutant Senny Mayulu's fine strike was ruled out for a foul in the build up. They eventually got their equaliser late on, with Mbappe setting up Ramos for a neat finish in the 86th minute to snag an unremarkable draw at Parc des Princes.

AdvertisementTHE MVP

Goncalo Ramos is starting to make it work. After a miserable opening to life in Paris, the Portuguese forward is looking more comfortable in the capital. He has made the most of his reserve minutes, and found the net here – a neat equaliser to rescue what would have been an embarrassing result. In truth, he perhaps should have ended the night with more; Ramos hit the woodwork multiple times. Still, he did enough to earn a draw, when a loss would have been mortifying.

THE BIG LOSER

It seems that every time Mbappe misses a game, another Parisian forward has a chance to show his quality. For some, such as Bradley Barcola, those opportunities have been seized with aplomb. For others, it hasn't been so easy. Such was the case for Randal Kolo Muani on Saturday evening. The French forward had little impact on the game in his 67 minutes of work, putting two shots on goal but registering little else in his chance to impress. He simply hasn't done enough to suggest he should be a regular in Paris.

This was a much-changed PSG side, which might make sense given the fixture coming up. The Parisians face Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. Mbappe and co. seem certain to return to the fray from the start for that one.

Dinesh Karthik, who was dropped from the Indian ODI team to face West Indies, has been made captain of the India A team for the Deodhar Trophy which begins in Delhi on October 23. He leads a team that includes attacking opener Prithvi Shaw, Test spinner R Ashwin, batsman Karun Nair and allrounder Krunal Pandya.Normally, the Deodhar Trophy would include the winner of the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. But with the World Cup only seven months away, this edition will be played between India A, India B and India C so that the selectors can firm up the set of probables who will be travelling to England next year.Ajinkya Rahane will lead India C, where he will have Suresh Raina and Shubman Gill for company. Also part of the 14-member squad is Washington Sundar, who injured his ankle in June on India’s tour of the UK. The 19-year old offspinner has only recently returned to playing cricket, picking up four wickets in three matches for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.Shreyas Iyer will captain India B, which includes Mayank Agarwal, the Karnataka opener who remains uncapped despite being called up to India’s Test squad. Most of their firepower appears to be in the bowling department. They have a swing bowler in Deepak Chahar, a left-arm quick in Jaydev Unadkat for variation and Varun Aaron for outright pace. Also part of the roster is legspinner Mayank Markande. The 20-year old had a successful debut season in the IPL in 2018, picking up 15 wickets in 14 innings at an economy rate of 8.3. Since then he has also been picked to play for India A in one-day cricket.India A: Dinesh Karthik (capt & wk), Prithvi Shaw, Anmolpreet Singh, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ankit Bawne, Nitish Rana, Karun Nair, Krunal Pandya, R Ashwin, Shreyas Gopal, S Mulani, Mohammed Siraj, Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddarth KaulIndia B: Shreyas Iyer (capt), Mayank Agarwal, Rituraj Gaekwad, PS Chopra, Hanuma Vihari, Manoj Tiwary, Ankush Bains (wk), Rohit Rayudu, K Gowtham, Mayank Markande, Shahbaz Nadeem, Deepak Chahar, Varun Aaron, Jaydev UnadkatIndia C: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Abhinav Mukund, Shubman Gill, R Samarth, Suresh Raina, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (WK), Vijay Shankar, Washington Sundar, Rahul Chahar, Pappu Roy, Navdeep Saini, Rajneesh Gurbani, Umar Nazir

Man Utd’s 4/10 dud who lost the ball 11x was "so far off it" v Copenhagen

Manchester United's season went from bad to worse last night as the Red Devils fell to a devastating 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, leaving Erik ten Hag's side rock bottom of the group and with a mountain to climb to qualify for the next round of the competition.

The English giants were cruising at one point, leading 2-0 in the game and were pushing for more before a contentious red card for Marcus Rashford in the first half turned the tie on its head. While it's always difficult to play with one less man, Ten Hag will be less than pleased with some of his team's defending inside the penalty area.

However, there was one player in particular who had an off-night and was one of the primary instigators of Man United's collapse in the Danish capital.

Man United's game in numbers

While the result will be severely disappointing for the players, coaches and fans, United's performance at the top end of the pitch was one of the best this season.

The three-time champions of Europe registered an xG of 3.02 on the night and scored three goals while Copenhagen mustered an xG of 2.25 but put four past goalkeeper Andre Onana. Statistically, the game could have easily finished level-pegging.

Unsurprisingly, it was in the second half where the game turned on its head from a data viewpoint. The home side had a higher xG after the interval with 1.18 to United's 0.97, although 0.79 of the visitors' xG was from the penalty spot, according to FotMob.

Onana will be disappointed with his performance too, having conceded a non-penalty xG of 1.46 against Copenhagen from 15 non-penalty shots, with the Cameroon international making merely four saves.

What was more worrying for the Red Devils was that the side lost the ball 43 times in their own half, with 22 coming in the second half as the defenders scrambled to clear their lines following wave after wave of Danish pressure, as per Opta.

Furthermore, United managed just 8.5% of their total ball recoveries in the opposition's half of the field compared to Copenhagen's 24.4%, showing how intense their opponent's pressing was, particularly after Rashford was given his marching orders.

Raphael Varane's game in numbers

In what was a peculiar first half of stoppages, Man United were dealt yet another injury blow as summer returnee Johnny Evans had to be taken off after just a quarter of an hour.

His replacement wasn't a bad one, with four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane stepping into the fray. Ten Hag had previously left the former world champion out of the Manchester derby a fortnight ago for "tactical reasons", with Evans being given the nod instead in what was quite a controversial decision at the time.

However, Varane certainly didn't do himself any justice at the Parken Stadium and played a massive part in Copenhagen's winning goal after failing to control a relatively comfortable square pass from Harry Maguire and ceding possession in his own third.

After the game, journalist Alex Turk claimed that the Frenchman was "so far off it", while club legend Paul Scholes admitted that Varane "did not fancy it" when referring to the pass from Maguire before the hosts' winner. Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News alleged that the ex-Real Madrid man put in a 4/10 display. Damning indeed.

During the game, Varane lost possession of the ball 11 times from 62 touches, while totalling a passing accuracy of just 81% which is quite low for a centre-back. One of the reasons for the £340k-per-week star's low passing accuracy was that he attempted five long balls over the top, completing only one, according to Sofascore.

In addition, Varane made just one interception, completed one tackle and blocked merely one shot amid an abundance of Copenhagen attacks.

Given the standards he has set throughout his career, this defeat was a night to forget for Varane, who may have justified Ten Hag's questionable decision to start Evans over him in the derby two weeks ago.

Nabi signs up with Melbourne Renegades for second season

The Afghanistan allrounder had been a key part of the Renegades’ run to the semi-final last season

Alex Malcolm02-Nov-2018Afghanistan allrounder Mohammad Nabi has signed with the Melbourne Renegades again for the upcoming Big Bash League season. The 33-year old was a revelation for the Renegades in the seventh season. Of all players who bowled 20 overs or more in the tournament, his economy rate of 5.76 was only bettered by his Afghanistan team-mate Rashid Khan (5.65) and Ashton Agar (5.74). Nabi took eight wickets at just 18.62 and his bowling in the Powerplay was particularly impressive. He also made 52 off 30 balls in a Man-of-the-Match performance in the win over the Melbourne Stars. Nabi was a huge part of the Renegades run to the semi-final, and his absence due to international duty was sorely felt as the Renegades lost to the eventual champions Adelaide Strikers.Overseas spinners have again proved a popular choice for BBL teams following the success of both Nabi and Rashid. Another spinner from Afghanistan – Mujeeb Ur Rahman – signed with Brisbane Heat while Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane joined the Melbourne Stars and will be replaced by Lancashire and England Lions legspinner Matt Parkinson when he heads to the Bangladesh Premier League. The Renegades have also added legspinner Cameron Boyce to their squad after crossing from the Hobart Hurricanes.

Scouts sent: Leeds chiefs have checked on new exciting forward for Farke

Leeds United have deployed chiefs to assess a new forward live in action, but a fresh report has revealed that there are also six other clubs chasing his signature.

Leeds United's season so far

Daniel Farke’s side have made a fairly mixed start to the new campaign having won seven, drawn four and lost three of their opening 14 games in the Championship, meaning that they currently find themselves in third place in the league table.

Ipswich Town (4-3)

Cardiff City (2-2)

Birmingham City (1-0)

Millwall (3-0)

West Bromwich Albion (1-1)

Southampton (3-1)

Watford (3-0)

Sheffield Wednesday (0-0)

Stoke City (1-0)

QPR (1-0)

Hull City (0-0)

Bristol City (2-1)

Norwich City (3-2)

Huddersfield Town (4-1)

The Whites are sure to be full of confidence following the most recent thrashing over Huddersfield Town last weekend and they will know that they are more than capable of pushing for promotion this season, but regardless, that hasn’t stopped chiefs from wanting to strengthen their squad even further.

The Elland Road outfit have identified Fluminense’s right-winger Jhon Arias as a possible target, who has made a total of 135 appearances at the Maracana Stadium since first putting pen to paper back in 2021 (Transfermarkt – Arias statistics).

The Colombia international has made an outstanding beginning to this season having established himself as Fernando Diniz’s overall best-performing player with a match rating of 7.22 (WhoScored – Fluminense statistics), and the 26-year-old’s form has brought him onto the radar in West Yorkshire.

Leeds send scouts to watch Jhon Arias

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds have sent representatives to watch Arias, but they are far from alone in their pursuit ahead of January.

A Colombian attacker who’ll play in the biggest club match of his life next weekend has been scouted by Rangers, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Burnley, Leeds Utd and Leicester City, TEAMtalk can confirm.

"TEAMtalk has been told one of Andre’s midfield teammates – Jhon Arias – will also come under observation. We understand Crystal Palace, West Ham, Burnley, Wolves, Leicester, Leeds and Scottish giants Rangers have all checked on Arias.”

Fluminense forward Jhon Arias.

Arias is a crossing machine with fantastic assist numbers

During his time at Fluminense, Arias has posted 56 involvements (30 assists and 26 goals) in 135 outings, so it’s clear to see the positive and prolific impact he makes in the final third, but even if the end product isn’t always there, he constantly tries his best to create chances.

Sponsored by Adidas, Diniz’s £7.1k-per-week earner (Fluminense salaries), also ranks in the 95th percentile for successful take-ons so he loves to use his pace to dribble past his marker (FBRef – Arias statistics), and has made 140 crosses so far this season, which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Fluminense statistics).

Leeds are additionally bound to find it attractive that he’s a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and in four roles in the midfield, so this really is a no-brainer of a deal to pursue should the right opportunity present itself.

West Ham’s "incredible" academy talent could be their next Defoe

West Ham United boast a rich history of developing the next big stars through their academy.

In the professional football setting, there is something special about a club that places its faith in the next generation, plucking them out of the academy and throwing them straight into the deep end of first-team football.

It's a strategy that the Hammers have executed to perfection having seen Declan Rice join Arsenal for £105m in the summer, but it isn't the only time that the club have pocketed millions from a former youth prodigy.

In the 1990s, West Ham had arguably the most prolific academy set up in the country, unearthing a whole host of generational English talents into the first-team, including Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe.

Defoe, in particular, is someone David Moyes would love to count upon in the present day having watched him terrorise Premier League defences for nearly two decades with his clinical finishing.

Jermaine Defoe's goal record at West Ham

Defoe was snapped up from London rivals Charlton Athletic at the age of 16 in 1999 and despite his tender age, it didn't take him long to make himself a hero at Upton Park.

He made his debut in a League Cup tie at Walsall in September 2000, aged 17, and his performance in that match foreshadowed the rest of his illustrious career in the top flight.

The youngster, who starred in the under-19 team that won the Premier Academy League title in 1999–2000 and scored twice against Arsenal in the play-off final, would bag on his senior debut for the club in a 1-0 win against the Saddlers.

At the end of the 2000/01 campaign, he was handed his league debut by then-manager Glenn Roeder, replacing Svetoslav Todorov, and would go on to score 40 goals in 104 appearances for the Hammers before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £7m in 2004.

As the saying goes, the rest is history, with Defoe becoming one of the greatest strikers to ever grace the Premier League, scoring 163 goals in 496 appearances, which places him in ninth in the all-time rankings.

After graduating from West Ham's academy, Defoe's legacy of goalscoring has only inspired the next generation of strikers in east London, and one of those is current academy starlet, Callum Marshall.

Callum Marshall's goal record in 23/24

Marshall is an 18-year-old striker who has taken the Premier League 2 by storm this term, plundering a whopping 13 goals in eight appearances, including a brace in a sensational 4-0 victory over Liverpool.

Lauded as "incredible" by journalist Antonio Mango for those staggering scoring exploits, the teenager tops the scoring charts in the competition, above the likes of Chelsea's Ronnie Stutter and Manchester United's Joe Hugill.

The youngster, who won the PL2 Player of the Month award for September, is showcasing attributes that were so readily associated with Defoe throughout his career, having also netted three times in three EFL trophy outings this term – taking his total tally to 16 for the season.

He constantly lurks on the shoulder of the last defender, his sharp movement in behind is difficult to stop and his finishing this term has become unstoppable.

Perhaps more impressive, he's currently outscoring first-team star Jarrod Bowen, who – like Marshall – is currently in the form of his life.

In all competitions this term, Bowen has scored nine goals in 16 appearances, which is an impressive record in itself, but it doesn't come close to eclipsing the talented teenager's exploits.

If Marshall continues to dazzle defences in the under-21s, the opportunity to become a first-team regular, as Defoe did, will look increasingly likely.

Rhodes' sights on overseas gains as home series kicks off

Beating Zimbabwe is foremost on the Bangladesh coach’s mind, but making sure his side hones their skills for overseas conditions is a close second

Mohammad Isam in Sylhet01-Nov-2018

AFP

Bangladesh should keep in mind the need to improve on their Test performances abroad, even while they are playing at home, according to head coach Steve Rhodes. In his first home Test in charge of Bangladesh, Rhodes’ intentions of looking at the larger-picture is something that should please everyone in the set-up, although he maintained that the “win-first” mentality remains at the top of their agenda against Zimbabwe.Bangladesh’s last Test assignment, in the West Indies, Rhodes’ first as Bangladesh coach, had disastrous results, though Bangladesh beat the hosts in both the ODI and T20I series. Their performance in South Africa, India and New Zealand last year was disappointing although they drew the Test series in Sri Lanka. Their next tour is of New Zealand, where they will play three Tests in February and March next year.Rhodes said that playing a certain way at home can make it difficult for them to play at a similar level on tour. “We have a lot of work to do to be a good Test team,” Rhodes said. “We have learned a way of playing in Bangladesh that makes us compete with the best [at home].”When we go away from home, we need to learn how to bowl on those wickets. We need to produce some bowlers who can bowl well on those wickets. Most importantly, we are working on batters for conditions like New Zealand, England, West Indies, South Africa and Australia. I understand there’s a lot of work to do.”Because the home wicket is little bit more docile compared to the bounce and seam of Antigua, it means it is sometimes difficult to put [our skills] into place.”Of course, Rhodes knows achieving this goal of his will not be easy. “Trying to bring in slight changes to cope with the bounce and seam, whilst we play on these sorts of wickets is often quite difficult to do,” he admitted.Against Zimbabwe, Rhodes said that Bangladesh will stick to what they do best at home – attack with spin – but without losing sight of the bigger picture. “We have beaten Australia in these spin conditions. What do you play for? You play to win. They beat England. It doesn’t matter how you do it. We won.”We have had difficult wickets against those oppositions and we have also had very difficult wickets in overseas conditions. I am not disillusioned about that. There’s progress to be made. I am not making excuses. We could have done better.”I am a teacher and it is about trying to make players better. Give us a chance; let us see what happens and how these batsmen go.”Already, Bangladesh have moved towards finding cricketers who will fit both roles, home and away. Rookie fast bowler Khaled Ahmed was handed a maiden Test call-up after impressing with long spells for Sylhet Division in the first-class competition, as well as in the High Performance programme and for when playing for Bangladesh A in 2018.”I have been very impressed with Khaled, especially when he joined us in this Test’s preparation. He has come off the back of a 10-wicket haul in domestic cricket, which is a fine effort on a flat wicket. He has height. He hits the wicket. He is definitely the type of bowler who will bowl well on most conditions,” Rhodes said.He reiterated that he is not out to make significant changes to Bangladesh’s methods, but to get them to improve in other areas such as slip catching, fast bowling and playing fast bowling in overseas conditions.”Bangladesh have a certain style of playing, and it is not for me to change it. It is for me to work with it, and develop other areas in which we can still improve. I am not a coach coming here to change the things we do really well. I want to enhance that even more.”
