ScorecardAn unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 109 between Amy Satterthwaite and Ellie Threlkeld was the second-highest partnership in KSL history and helped Lancashire Thunder secure a notable 33-run win in the Roses match at Emerald Headingley. The Thunder recovered from 25 for 4 to post 134 for 4, with New Zealander Satterthwaite 57 not out and wicketkeeper Threlkeld unbeaten on 53 amidst a standout afternoon. The 19-year-old later claimed a record four stumpings and affected a run out as Diamonds replied with 101 all out.The Diamonds got off to a bright start in reply with a 43-run opening stand between captain Lauren Winfield and Australian Beth Mooney. But they were two of four wickets to fall for 16 runs inside four-and-a-half overs as the score slipped to 59 for 4.Both sides, who lost their opening fixtures on Sunday, had success with pace off the ball. In the end, England left-arm spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Alex Hartley were the pick with 3 for eleven off 3.2 overs and 3 for 19 from four as the Thunder won for only the second time across the two-and-a-bit seasons of the KSL. It also broke a run of two successive Roses defeats. After eight overs, this looked set to be a procession for the Diamonds as spin duo Chamari Atapattu and Katie Levick struck, while Alice Davidson-Richards’ medium-pacers claimed two wickets in three balls in the seventh.Lancashire reached halfway at 33 for 4, with left-handed Satterthwaite and Threlkeld, who has replaced Sarah Taylor behind the stumps this year, in the early stages of a 12.2-over alliance. And they batted confidently without taking too many risks before expanding. In the 16th over, Threlkeld slog-swept legspinner Levick for six before Satterthwaite lofted her straight for a second maximum. The pair reached their fifties in the penultimate over – Threlkeld off 40 balls and Satterthwaite off 30.They were only Lancashire’s second and third fifties in KSL history, while their stand has only been bettered by the unbroken 161 opening stand between Rachel Priest and Heather Knight for Western Storm against the Diamonds at York last August.Winfield then helped the Diamonds get off to a bright start in reply, twice handsomely driving Kate Cross for four, although she was dropped at point on 19 by Emma Lamb off the same bowler. The England World Cup winner hit a brisk 28 before miscuing her international team-mate Ecclestone to mid-on as the score fell to 43 for 1 in the sixth over. That became 56 for 2 in the ninth when Mooney hold out to deep midwicket off Hartley in her first over.Ecclestone then had Davidson-Richards stumped by Threlkeld at the end of the 10th before Hartley bowled Sri Lanka’s Atapattu at the start of the 11th. The run-out of talismanic England allrounder Katherine Brunt in the 14th over following a mix-up with Delissa Kimmince left the score at 71 for 5 and was a key blow.Kimmince later fell the same way before Threlkeld’s second stumping helped Hartley remove Thea Brookes. She then ran out Alice Monaghan and had Levick stumped off Danielle Hazell and Helen Fenby stumped off Ecclestone to wrap things up.

Kohli will want to square the ledger against Smith – Waugh

The former Australia captain reckons the current Indian captain is the best batsman in the world

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Aug-2018Virat Kohli is the best batsman in the world but he will have a point to prove when he tours Australia in November, according to former Australia captain Steve Waugh.”He’ll be putting a bit of pressure on himself, this [a win] will be the feather in the cap if he can pull this off,” Waugh told the Cricket Australia website. “Steve Smith had an incredible series [in India last year] and made three centuries and scored about 500 runs, and Virat hardly scored a run. So that would have been deflating for him, and he will look to square the ledger when he comes back to Australia.”India reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2-1 but they did so without Kohli making much of a contribution. He scored only 46 runs in five innings as the Australian bowlers found a way to keep him quiet. One of them, Pat Cummins, who is currently recuperating from a back injury, was recently quoted as saying, “My brave, bold prediction; I’d say I think Virat Kohli is not going to get a hundred and we’re going to knock them off over here.” This threw back to the trend that was seen in the 2016-17 series, where tensions ran high among both teams.Cummins later clarified that his comments were mostly tongue-in-cheek. “I was almost trying to do the opposite to the way they were perceived. I was trying to pay him a huge compliment and say that my big wish list for the summer was he doesn’t score a hundred.”He’s obviously so important to the team and is such a gun batsman, so him not scoring runs would go a long way to helping us win. But I certainly didn’t mean to say he’s no good because I couldn’t hold him in higher regard.”Kohli is currently ranked the No. 1 batsman in Test cricket after a spellbinding century in tough conditions at Edgbaston last week. He was also instrumental in the Johannesburg Test in January, scoring 54 and 41 on a pitch that was characterised by spiteful variations in bounce, and has carried the Indian batting on their most recent overseas trips. Additionally, Kohli amassed 692 runs from four Tests on his previous tour of Australia in 2014-15.”He has got the game to survive anywhere, I think he’s got the best technique of anyone in world cricket,” Waugh said. “He and AB de Villiers have got the best techniques, and AB de Villiers is not playing Test cricket so that makes him (Kohli) the stand-out player.”I think Steve Smith is probably the hungriest batsman but he’s obviously not playing for 12 months, so Kohli really is the premier batsman in world cricket. And he likes the big occasion.”Like (Brian) Lara and Tendulkar and (Viv) Richards and Javed Miandad, and all the great batsmen, they want the big occasion and that brings out the best in their cricket.”As such, Waugh suggested it was up to the Australian batsmen to pile Kohli under scoreboard pressure.”I think the best way to control him is for our guys to play really positive cricket, to concentrate on executing the team plans and to score 300-plus runs in our first innings so we can put pressure on their batting line-up.”Our attack is as good as anyone’s and, in our conditions, he’ll have to be on his game and particularly if he’s chasing some big scores that Australia have put on the board. That will put pressure on his batting. I think the only thing Australia can do is really control how well we’re playing. If we play really good cricket, then it’s a bit like the last series in India where Steve Smith totally dominated him.”

Spurs can ease Romero injury by handing "liability" his last chance

Tottenham Hotspur are flying at the moment, but it seems the international break could have done more than just damage momentum. After all, a long-term injury to Cristian Romero could prove devastating…

How long is Cristian Romero injured for?

Having cultivated a reputation for rash recklessness since making his £42m move, with Darren Bent having branded him a "liability" back in May, it is outstanding the speed with which the Argentina international has shifted such a narrative, rebranding himself as one of the squad's leaders and a reliable asset once again.

He has been a true rock at the back this campaign alongside Micky van de Ven, and played a huge role in their unbeaten Premier League status, of which only one other side boasts.

Whilst his two goals have aided positive results massively, it is the defensive control he exerts at the back that has allowed them to dominate, boasting a 92% pass accuracy in the league supported by his 2.5 tackles, 4.4 clearances and 5.6 ball recoveries per game, via Sofascore.

The former Atalanta ace would be a hard man to replace, but one that could need a successor now given his substitution whilst out playing with his national team.

When quizzed about his half-time removal against Peru, the World Cup winner suggested that his right ankle had swollen too much, and that he had to look ahead to "an important home game with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday against Fulham".

Whilst his forethought is both flattering and refreshing for a South American often renowned for favouring country over club, it could still prove a step too far for him to be fit for that clash.

Who could replace Cristian Romero?

Given that Ange Postecoglou's revolution is still in the early stages, the Australian has hardly had plenty of time to bolster his squad sufficiently to add the necessary depth to mitigate such potential disasters.

As such, he will be forced to simply survive with what he inherited, with Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon's departures now seemingly like a potential blunder.

Especially because that only leaves one outstanding name to step into the vacancy, with Eric Dier the only real senior option for a right-sided centre-back.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier.

Having been the target of much scrutiny across his nine years in England, the 29-year-old is actually a loyal servant to Spurs, having featured 360 times for them despite never claiming any silverware.

Although his powers have waned more recently, there have been fine campaigns to boast of, the likes of which Postecoglou will seek to usher out. After all, if he can turn Romero from a liability into a superstar, then he may be able to perform a similar trick with the 49-cap ace, who too was branded a "liability" by writer Mitch Fretton.

cristian-romero-tottenham-hotspur-joe-rodon-leeds-united-loan-postecoglou

After all, as recently as the 2021/22 season saw the £85k-per-week titan impress, even if he can remain somewhat shaky in possession. Despite that, he remained more than impressive enough to deputise now in Romero's absence, posting an 86% pass accuracy alongside 1.1 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

The former Sporting CP man has the defensive credentials to shine, and alongside Van de Ven and under Postecoglou, it could mark the perfect environment for this confidence-shy star to reignite his career in what could be one of his last chances to impress.

Everton: Former flop who had "strange" time at Goodison now has 7 G/A this season

This summer, Everton unconventionally utilised the loan markets to strengthen their personnel by signing Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma both on initial temporary deals with a view to making them permanent past this campaign.

It's ultimately risk-free from a Toffees perspective, the ball in Everton's court if they then decide to pull the plug on the prospective deals if both Harrison and Danjuma fail to perform at Goodison Park.

Both players – who have relocated to Merseyside temporarily from Leeds United and Villarreal, respectively – haven't set the world alight by any stretch of the imagination early into their fledging Everton careers.

Harrison and Danjuma have a combined three goals in Everton blue, with the former also assisting another versus AFC Bournemouth.

But, although their starts on Merseyside have been unspectacular, they should both play far better in the long-term than Joshua King managed when he joined the Toffees as a late January addition in 2021 on a short-term deal.

When did Everton sign Josh King?

The 62-time Norway international unusually packed his bags and departed Bournemouth for Everton for a nominal fee, the Toffees thinking they had struck gold by getting a player in who had bagged goals at Premier League level previously on the cheap.

Before signing for Everton, King had netted 53 goals in 186 appearances for the Cherries.

48 of those strikes would come in the top-flight, the Toffees hoping he could add a few more to his resume with Everton.

Unfortunately to those with allegiances to the Blues, King's transfer would turn out to be a waste of time.

How did Joshua King perform for Everton?

King wouldn't add a single goal to his Premier League scoring tally with the Blues, playing a grand total of 138 minutes for the Toffees in the top flight, all coming off the bench with zero goal contributions.

Former Everton striker and football pundit Marcus Bent labelled the purchase of King as "strange" in retrospect when speaking to FootballFanCast, never really giving King a chance to shine after securing him on a short-term basis.

He said: "They signed him on a six-month contract and didn't give him a chance – he never started a single game, that's weird if you've only got someone for six months, Ancelotti clearly didn't fancy him."

He was unsurprisingly released in the summer of 2021 alongside Robin Olsen and Theo Walcott, a bizarre transfer altogether.

Theo-walcott-richarlison-everton

However, since departing Goodison in bemusing circumstances, the one-time Manchester United man has refound his mojo once more.

How has King performed since leaving Everton?

Watford would swoop in for the Norwegian attacker on a free transfer directly after his exit from Everton, having a mixed spell with the Hornets in a one-year stay.

King's most memorable moment in a Watford strip came when he netted a hat-trick against Everton in front of the Goodison Park faithful who used to cheer him on, the one-time Toffees dud enacting his revenge in emphatic style as Watford won 5-2 on the day.

The 31-year-old forward has since plied his trade in Turkey with Fenerbahce after leaving Vicarage Road, again showing the Toffees what they missed out by not giving him a proper chance.

In the 2023/24 season alone, King has notched up seven goals and assists from just ten appearances – outscoring the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has three goals in all competitions whilst new striker signings Beto and Youssef Chermiti at Goodison Park have only one goal between them.

Harshly treated at Everton arguably, the Oslo-born attacker hasn't let the Toffees setback completely derail his career and has since found new homes to call his own to recapture his goalscoring best.

Twist: Fabrizio Romano shares news on "fantastic" £35m Liverpool target

Liverpool could look to add even more talent to their midfield in the coming transfer windows, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped a key update over their pursuit of a "one-man army" in the middle of the park.

Liverpool transfer updates

The summer transfer window ended up being a busy one at Anfield, although the midfield ended up being the only area of focus. The Reds had huge issues in that position throughout last season, with age seemingly catching up with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, neither of whom could cover the ground they once did.

Injuries to others such as Thiago, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also proved to be problematic, so in order to solve that issue, Jurgen Klopp brought in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

So far this season, it has made a clear difference, with fresh legs alleviating those past problems – Szoboszlai has been particularly impressive – but that's not to say that further additions aren't necessarily needed in the middle of the park.

The hope is that a new defender comes in at some point in the near future, too, in order to provide Klopp with more options there, but for now, another midfielder looks to be on the cards.

Manu Kone to Liverpool news

In a new transfer update, Romano told Caught Offside that Liverpool are still linked with Manu Kone, with news of an extended Borussia Monchengladbach deal untrue:

"Kone could also be one to watch in January as it’s not true that he’s signed a new contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, despite reports elsewhere.

"Kone’s current contract is valid until 2026, but he could leave in 2024. We’ll have to see what happens, though, because at the moment there are no contacts or negotiations ongoing with any other clubs, despite interest in him during the summer.

"Juventus and Liverpool were two clubs who considered him as an option but then did not call again after August. So we will see in 2024 what happens, but the player remains open to trying a new experience, while his asking price would likely be around €40m (to) €45m."

A recent claim from 90min said that Kone to Liverpool is still on the cards and Romano's update only adds fuel to the fire that he could become a Reds player once January arrives.

The 22-year-old could certainly be an exciting option for Klopp, having been hailed as a "fantastic" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, not to mention a "one-man army in midfield", such is his all-round dominance in his position.

Kone's stats suggest that he could be ideal to come in and master the No.6 role for Liverpool, having averaged 2.5 tackles per game in the Bundesliga so far this season, as well as exactly the same tally during the 2023/24 campaign.

Mac Allister is not at his best in that position, as has been highlighted in recent weeks, and Kone could be a long-term option who allows the Argentine to push further up the pitch and play his best football.

Fosun made a bigger mistake than Kilman by selling £23m Wolves star

Fosun have made some poor transfer decisions during their time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Selling the likes of Pedro Neto, Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes for big fees certainly bolstered the bank balance.

It did leave the Old Gold weaker across several areas of the team, however, something that Vitor Pereira is having to try and improve.

Vitor Pereira

One of the biggest mistakes the club made recently was selling Max Kilman to West Ham United.

Why Wolves must regret selling Max Kilman

Kilman joined the Irons for a fee of around £40m, which meant the Molineux side secured a stunning profit on him.

The centre-back has won 70% of his total duels contested in the Premier League for West Ham, while also losing possession just 7.6 times per game and recovering four balls per game.

Wolves captain Max Kilman

West Ham haven’t exactly enjoyed the best season, but with Kilman, the club have an excellent defender who will only go from strength to strength as time goes on.

How Wolves could do with someone of his quality right now, especially as the club has been dragged into a relegation battle.

Has this been Fosun’s biggest transfer mistake? Or was selling another defender back in 2023 even worse?

Nathan Collins is now starring for Brentford in the top flight, and it looks as though the club could be rueing the decision to sell.

Wolves' bigger mistake than Kilman

Collins spent a single season with the Old Gold, making a total of 31 appearances in all competitions for the club.

During the 2023 summer transfer window, Brentford began to show interest in the Republic of Ireland international and he was soon on his way to London for a reported £23m transfer fee.

This now looks like a bargain. Stephen Kenny, Collins’ former Ireland manager, lauded him in 2022, saying:

For the Bees this season, the 23-year-old has been in excellent form indeed. Across 26 Premier League games, the centre-back has completed 87% of his passes, averages 1.2 tackles, makes 0.8 interceptions and wins an impressive 5.2 total duels per game – a success rate of 63% – in the top flight.

Against Leicester City on Friday evening, he made 12 clearances, was accurate with 60% of his long balls and finished the game with a 90% pass success rate.

There is no doubt Thomas Frank is now getting the best out of the former Wolves star and the decision to sell him two years ago is one that will surely be looked back on as a poor one.

Wolves have conceded 54 goals in the top flight this season, the third-worst defensive record in the division.

If they had Collins at the heart of their defence, things may have looked a lot more promising.

Kohli and Rahane dominate, but England fight back

India had their collective best day of the Test series despite the rare instance of Virat Kohli failing to convert a half-century and Ajinkya Rahane falling in the 80s. Asked to bat in the most even bat-ball contest of the series, India showed all-round improvement: the openers added 60, India rediscovered some of their back-foot batting, and then Kohli and Rahane put on India’s highest partnership in the country since the 2002 tour, debutant Rishabh Pant got off to a bright start, and India ended up with a comfortable 307 on the board with four wickets in hand.England were left debating the wisdom of two decisions: picking Adil Rashid over Sam Curran, and then deciding to bowl. There can be two reasons for the latter decision. Either England feel the only life in this pitch was to be had in the first session or they got ahead of themselves and expected India to roll over. The second seemed likelier given the second new ball zipped around towards the end of the day’s play, but India had scored plenty by then. England’s fielding continued to let them down, taking their drops count this series to 10.That India were not going to roll over was evident from how well the openers had lifted their game. This was the third opening combination in three Tests, but KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan had done some work on their batting. It helped them that England bowled shorter than they did in the first two Tests, which meant the ones that moved actually beat the bat as opposed to taking the edge. India also left alone more balls in the first 15 overs – 38 – than in any of their previous innings. They also used the crease more, happy to cut and work the ball of the back foot. Dhawan provided the impetus, punishing every small error, hitting seven fours in his 35.By the time Chris Woakes got rid of the openers in quick succession, they had added more than any Indian opening partnership outside Asia and the West Indies since December 2013. Cheteshwar Pujara then put India in a further spot of bother with an extremely uncharacteristic dismissal: a hook in the last over before lunch after having sworn off that shot six years previously. Good bowling and tough conditions perhaps force you to look for other scoring options. At 82 for 3, it seemed it was all down to Kohli again to rescue India’s day, but this time he had company. Rahane was finding form. Kohli started watchfully, respecting Stuart Broad who had got him out last. Rahane took the responsibility to do the early running, benefiting from the lack of extravagant movement. The sun came out, the movement began to die, a rusty Ben Stokes bowled too short, and for the first time since the first day of the series, batting seemed like an occupation where you needed to make big mistakes to fail.Kohli and Rahane did make mistakes early on, but small ones. Kohli nearly got out first ball, playing a defensive push to a wide ball. Rahane edged a couple of short-of-a-length deliveries, but they didn’t go to hand. Once the movement died, and when England went to Rashid, these two were set: Rahane 27 off 38, and Kohli 23 off 47. Rashid put on an absolute buffet of five overs for 29 runs, failing to help James Anderson, who was bowling well at the other end, and by the time he was done India were 170 for 3.Both soon brought up their fifties, and now was Anderson’s turn to make a mistake. On 57, Rahane unleashed a full-blooded cut shot off Woakes, high over point, where Anderson went airborne and spilled a tough chance. Dropped catch No. 9. This heralded a period where Kohli and Rahane matched each other shot for shot, putting on an exhibition of drives and cuts. This was a period where India wanted to dominate, and Rahane took the lead. Before he edged a drive on the up, he had played attacking shots to each of the previous six deliveries. This was a time to attack: the pitch had settled down, the new ball was 13 overs away, just that this ball seamed a touch to take the fatal edge. This wicket just reinforced Kohli’s resolve. It was almost unthinkable Kohli would repeat the mistake. Forget Johannesburg, and six of his last first-innings half-centuries ended between 149 and 243. Rashid redeemed himself with Kohli’s wicket only for the second time in his 90s. Kohli saw a full ball, bowled with a scrambled seam as usual, went for the big drive, but got an edge to slip.Pant then announced himself with a six second ball, having picked Rashid’s wrong’un and lofting it back over his head. The first recorded Indian to get off the mark in Tests with a six, Pant showed composure after that, clipping nicely off his pads after a string of plays and misses outside off. He ended the day unbeaten on 22 off 32.At the other end, England were left frustrated by their fielding again. It was about six overs before the eventual end of day’s play when Broad produced an edge from Hardik Pandya. The lob was dropped at third slip by Keaton Jennings. Even though Anderson got Pandya with the last ball of the day’s play – Pandya added only four after the drop – England had lost an opportunity to cause damage with the new ball in the dying moments of the day.

'Means what it means' – Thierry Henry hopeful he 'annoyed' Rayan Cherki with France U21 snub as he challenges Lyon star to 'show character all the time'

France U21 manager Thierry Henry has called on former Chelsea target Rayan Cherki to rediscover his best after handing him a international call up

Henry backed Cherki to rediscover his best form after a difficult run at Lyon that has seen his stock drop this season. The midfielder was highly sought after last January, and even on the periphery of the France senior side. But Henry dropped him ahead of the March break – only bringing him in due to shortages elsewhere.

AdvertisementWHAT THIERRY HENRY SAID

In a press conference, Henry insisted that Cherki needs to return to form: "He should have been annoyed for the last three months, shouldn’t he?” joked Henry when he explained his selection choices in a press conference on Monday. "He has woken up. That’s good. Not seeing his name on the list should have annoyed him. He needs to show consistency because there is a huge difference between sometimes showing character and showing character all the time."

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 20-year-old seems to have reacted to his sub, scoring his first goal of the season against Toulouse over the weekend. After his performance, Henry asserted that Cherki can still be one of the best in the world: "I’m not talking about his quality, because I have never seen a player in history who dribbles as quickly as him, with both feet. But he made a thunderous debut, very young and to not be starting matches today, that means what it means."

The attacking midfielder will hope to crack the XI for Henry's side as they take on the Ivory Coast and United States this month. After that, he is set to return to France, where he will hope to make an impact for a recovering Lyon side – who are now 10th in Ligue 1.
