'We're saving our best for last' – Finch

Australia have packed 10 days of cricket into the last three weeks, and their T20I captain hopes the team can cap a hard month on the road with a title win

Liam Brickhill in Harare07-Jul-2018With one match to go before a well-earned break, Australia captain Aaron Finch is hoping his team will cap a hard month on the road with a victory. “Hopefully leading into this final, we’re saving our best for last and then the boys will get a little break,” Finch said.Australia have packed 10 days of cricket into the last three weeks, and they’ll need the rest ahead of a busy 2018-19 season. After a trip to the UAE for Tests, ODIs and a T20I against Pakistan, the side will play South Africa, India and Sri Lanka over a summer that will also feature an expanded Big Bash League.Australia have also been coming to terms with a new era both on and off the field, with the addition of new faces to their squads bringing with it a general need for recalibration. While there’s still room for improvement, Finch thinks there have been “great developments” in the team.”Slowly we’re starting to find the right balance and a little bit more of an understanding of how each other play the game,” Finch said. “There’s a few new faces around, so as a captain I think it’s important to have more of an understanding of guys strengths and things where there’s room for improvement. There’ve been some great developments over the last few months on tour. We’ve trained hard.”But hard yakka in the nets hasn’t necessarily transmuted into success. Inconsistent results certainly aren’t down to any lapses in their training schedules: Australia have trained for an hour or more after their last two games in Harare, braving plummeting mid-winter temperatures, and several players have spoken about the effect new coach Justin Langer is having. All the same, their last few games have been marked by both record-breaking peaks and repeated blunders.”I don’t know if rusty is the right word,” Finch said. “We’re still just slightly off in our execution with the bat, ball and in the field. Putting down a couple too many chances in the field – well, one is too many. With the ball we’re probably just leaking that one over that’s a real big one. In the past we’ve been really good at, if we’re hit for a boundary early, shutting down the over and getting out of it. Lately there’s been too many 15, 16-plus overs. With the bat, anytime you have to get a new partnership going, it makes it more difficult.”It would have been nice for our in batters to make sure that we got the job done comfortably [against Zimbabwe]. A little too close for comfort, but in the end getting a win is important, leading into the final with momentum.”Finch’s personal returns have also been mixed in the tri-series, with 240 runs (and a new world record) in his first two innings followed by 19 runs from his next two. But such are the vagaries of T20 batting, Finch said, targetting another big knock in Sunday’s final.”I feel like I’m playing very well at the moment. I’m not too bothered by a couple of low scores to be honest. T20 cricket tends to be high risk at the start of the innings and as long as I’m moving well and hitting the ball in the middle of the bat I’m pretty confident. Having played a lot of T20 cricket now, I understand the highs and lows of a batter in this game so it’s just about making sure that you’re giving yourself the best chance, making the right decision under pressure, and I still feel as though I’m doing that. It just hasn’t gone my way in the last two games, but hopefully a big one in the final.”Sarfraz Ahmed and Aaron Finch at the toss•AFPFinch will be up against an attack Australia hadn’t seen much of in T20Is before their trip to Zimbabwe. Australia’s last T20I against Pakistan before the tri-series was at the World T20 in 2016, and while they have played each other in other formats, Australia have had to scramble to adapt their gameplans on a quick turnaround while in Harare.”They’ve got a lot of very dangerous players,” Finch said of Pakistan. “If you look at the stats from this series, Fakhar Zaman has been outstanding and a real thorn in our side for a couple of games. He’s also been really consistent in this format for quite a long time. Obviously [Mohammad] Amir came back and bowled really well in the last game. They’ve got a lot of left-arm options. And then Shadab Khan as well, bowling legspin and spinning it both ways is also a threat. We reviewed heavily after the game against Pakistan and came up with some really solid plans for their bowlers and batters.”The world no. 1 ranking will remain out of Australia’s grasp even if they win Sunday’s final – they needed an unbeaten run through the tri-series to snatch the position away from Pakistan – but Finch said that winning the tri-series, rather than gaining ranking points, was Australia’s goal throughout.”On this tour, there’s been no talk about ‘we have to win this tournament to become no. 1’. It’s about winning the tournament for Australia. We’ve put ourselves in a position to do that, so that’s a real positive. We haven’t played our best cricket in the last couple of games, but there’s room for improvement and come tomorrow I’ve got a real good feeling that we’ll bring our A game.”Though rankings aren’t the focus, a win in the final would mean that Australia’s T20 side would be their top-ranked men’s team in second position (their women’s side is no. 1 overall), and Finch put their climb up the tables from sixth position last year down to the increased number of T20Is on their calendar. Australia have played 17 T20Is since the last World T20 in early 2016, winning 12. Between the 2014 and 2016 World T20s, they had played just 10 games, losing six.”We’ve been really consistent over the years in T20 cricket with some great sides,” Finch said. “In the past there’s been a lot less T20 cricket played as a country outside of the world tournaments. When you’re playing one game generally per series, if that, it can be quite hard to get your ranking up there. I think over the last 18 or 24 months we’ve played a lot more T20; we’ve probably had a lot more settled side over that time as well. I think there’s merit in how we’ve moved up the rankings.”

Man Utd: Ten Hag could find an ideal Casemiro heir in £15m talent

Manchester United have endured a rather disappointing season up until the international break, winning just five of their 11 fixtures so far.

Erik ten Hag will certainly be feeling the heat, especially with the positivity surrounding the club dwindling following an initial solid debut campaign under the Dutchman where they finished third in the Premier League and won the EFL Cup – a first trophy success in six years.

Everything looked rosy, yet the Red Devils failed to land some top transfer targets – like Harry Kane – while the players he did sign haven’t exactly set Old Trafford alight as yet and things will need to come together swiftly otherwise Ten Hag may be out of a job.

The transfer window is fast approaching and the 53-year-old could potentially strengthen his ranks then, as United have been linked with 18-year-old, Arthur Vermeeren.

Who could Man Utd sign in January?

The Red Devils have shown interest in the young Belgian midfielder who is enjoying a meteoric rise to the top of the game.

Arthur Vermeeren

Ten Hag faces some competition however, as Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona among others have also been keeping a close watch on the talented gem according to TEAMtalk.

The teenager is reportedly valued at just £15m by current club Royal Antwerp and this could prove to be a stunning bargain for whoever secures his signature.

Ten Hag will surely be looking to revamp his midfield options in the coming months, especially with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro the wrong side of 30 and Vermeeren could be an ideal heir to the Brazilian.

How good is Arthur Vermeeren?

The former Real Madrid midfielder is the only outfield player to feature in all 11 games for United this season, yet the 31-year-old won't be able to keep these performances up forever.

He currently ranks first in the squad for tackles per game (2.6) while also ranking 6th for accurate passes per game (44.5) and he is still clearly one of their finest midfielders.

Vermeeren has made a stunning impact in his homeland. The youngster has already made 49 senior appearances for Antwerp since the start of last season as he helped them secure a remarkable league title triumph.

He currently ranks fourth across the squad for accurate passes per game (51.8) while also ranking fifth for tackles (1.8), first for successful dribbles (1.3) and third for big chances created (two), indicating that he has been effective across a wide range of metrics in the heart of the Antwerp midfield and has the tools to step into Casemiro's shoes.

His teammate and compatriot, Toby Alderweireld, heaped praise on the sensation recently, saying: “He arrived in the team by force of circumstance, but since then he has learned very quickly.

“He reads the game very well, his potential is enormous. Have I seen this before? Rarely, I think.”

There is no doubt he will be on the move in the near future, especially judging by his immense impact in such a short space of time at the Belgian side.

Who will be the lucky club that sign him? United will certainly fancy their chances and Ten Hag could find a perfect heir for Casemiro in the process.

Benkenstein calls for mental preparedness after Galle debacle

South Africa batting coach Dale Benkenstein put his team’s struggles against spin down to their mental make-up after their twin collapses in the first Test in Galle. South Africa were routed 126 and 73 – their two lowest totals in Sri Lanka, and lowest since readmission – and Benkenstein said the poor performance arose from a lack of match practice and, chiefly, an absence of mental toughness on their first tour since early April.”It’s not the standard we want. Technically, you have to face the spinning ball and there’s a few things that you have to adjust to. But 90% of it is being tough mentally, being used to the ball missing the bat or spinning past the bat,” Benkenstein said. “When you’ve had a lot of Test cricket, you are toughened for Test pressures, and I think the guys were low on that as well.”South Africa came into the Test off a three-month off-season, and though some of their players were involved in the IPL during that period, and a few others in the county circuit, the rustiness from a lack of Test cricket showed. Benkenstein admitted that not even intense training at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria helped in shaking off the cobwebs. “We did some pretty good preparation before [the series], but in our conditions. We were trying to simulate the conditions here. We hit quite a lot of balls, but we haven’t had a lot of competition,” Benkenstein said. That competition arrived in Galle, and it turned out to be one in which South Africa lost heavily. But on the upside, it has given them two extra days in preparation for the next Test, and Benkenstein wasn’t necessarily looking at utilizing that time in the nets. “I don’t believe practises are going to make a huge amount of difference. Mentally, we’ve got to remind ourselves we are back in Test cricket again. It’s tough.”Tougher because South Africa’s best player of spin, Hashim Amla, is enduring a lean passage – he averages 25.87 from eight Tests this year, and the only player as adept as him, AB de Villiers, has retired. While de Villiers has been away from the South African Test squad before, when he was on sabbatical, he is now permanently out of the picture, and Benkenstein urged the squad to move on. “You don’t replace AB or Jacques Kallis – they are once in a decade, once in the lifetime [players],” Benkenstein said. “We can’t look backwards. A lot of the guys have played with AB and seen how he has gone about his business. We’ve got a task ahead of us now. The guys that are in the room are going to have to pull together.”Interestingly, Benkenstein made no mention of conditions or of what he wanted the batsmen to do to wrap their heads around the spinner-friendly tracks. All he said was that South Africa are close to getting things right, despite what the scorecard might say. “I don’t think we are far off. It’s actually not such a big gap. It seems like a big gap in the end, but it’s not such a big gap.”

Everton: £15m flop was compared to Cahill after signing, now he’s not at the club

With a sparkling Premier League career that spanned 226 games and returned 56 (mainly emphatic) goals – Tim Cahill is rightfully one of Everton's most revered players.

It's safe to say that since the Australian's transfer in 2012 to Shanghai, there's never been a player that's left the same mark in such a dedicated spell as Cahill.

As many defences and corner flags fell foul to Cahill's greatness, so did many of his successors.

Often flash-in-the-pan forwards that lit up Goodison for a season and then departed, there wasn't really another player ready to fill the dedicated role that Evertonians longed for. There were some strikers that even failed to light it up at all. Sandro, Cenk Tosun, Neal Maupay, Salomon Rondon… they weren't fit to lace the boxing maverick's boots.

Why did Everton sign Neal Maupay?

In August 2022, Everton signed Brighton's Maupay on a three-year-deal for £15m. He was similar in stature to Cahill, could mix it at the best of times, and was reasonably prolific with 26 goals in 102 appearances for the Seagulls.

It was perhaps a case of 'too good to be true' when the Frenchman's first goal for the club reflected the same sort of fan favourite tenacity and fire as Cahill.

Against West Ham, brilliant close control followed by a dastardly turn and shot combo into the bottom left was all too familiar. The icing on the cake? A bolt to the corner flag. Instead of the Aussie's trademark punch combo, Maupay excitedly hoofed the flag.

The Athletic's Greg O'Keeffe happened to write: "After showing a timely slice of quality to provide the winning finish, he gave one of the Gwladys Street End’s corner flags the type of assault they haven’t received since the days of another fiery fan favourite, Tim Cahill."

Was he to be the heir to Cahill's legacy? Well, no. Unfortunately, this display was one of few that offered up treasured parallels back to better times and Maupay steadily fell into a period of struggle similar to the very club around him.

In August 2023, his poor displays and difficulties were epitomised by a torrent of ugly online abuse he received from his own fans after failing to convert a number of chances in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham.

neal-maupay-everton-premier-league

As struggles in front of goal persisted, that previously highlighted strike against West Ham proves to currently be the 5 foot 8 forward's first and last goal for the Toffees in 27 league games.

What are Neal Maupay's best qualities?

After an excruciating dry patch, Sean Dyche lost patience. He opted to go forward with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ellis Simms, and even Demarai Gray instead of the Frank Lampard signing. It says a lot, when two out of three of those names have since departed.

Fortunately, as all parties looked to the door, solace came with a former club. Four years after he left for Brighton, September 2023 saw Maupay return to Brentford on a season long loan.

READ MORE: Where is Salomon Rondon now?

Under a more progressive tactician in Thomas Frank, and potentially spurred on by old exploits (he scored 41 goals in 95 games), Maupay has joined a team where he has more time to play to his strength rather than find himself overlooked in industrial play.

With just one game back at Brentford, it's hard to suggest how good the striker right now. However, through looking at how Frank sets up and Maupay's FBref numbers – we can get a rough idea as to how he could perform.

London Football Writer Jack Brace provided key insight:

"Brenford tend to press high early in games given a more energetic front line without Toney. But they drop deep and counter once they've gone ahead. This has proved detrimental as 6/8 games this season have been lost from winning positions.

"With a lack of presence up top, they're more conservative in possession, making shorter passes, and playing to forwards' feet. Although there is a lack of aerial presence, Maupay could compliment Wissa, Lewis-Potter, and Mbeumo well."

FBref shows that Maupay could play an intriguing role for Franks' grounded, often-reactive pressing side Bees. He is in the top 12% percentile for both blocks and interceptions (0.38 and 1.06 per 90). Although his pass completion of 73.7% could be better – he could be a sleeping giant in an offensive regard if he gets confidence back.

He takes 3.08 shots per game (top 25% percentile) and has an interesting non-penalty xG of 0.48 per 90. This places him in the top 22% bracket of comparable forwards. As Brentford tick over with Toney and now Schade sidelined, a confident Maupay would be a highly welcomed prospect. It's just a shame he never lived up to that Cahill-like robustness on Merseyside.

Blow for Mowbray: New Sunderland injury blow to “key player”

Sunderland and manager Tony Mowbray have suffered a new injury blow to a "key player" ahead of this evening’s Championship clash with Watford.

What’s the latest Sunderland injury news?

The Black Cats have been in fine form of late, winning four of their last five to climb up into the Championship playoff places. A comfortable 3-0 victory last time out against Sheffield Wednesday was the latest positive display, with a home meeting with the Hornets next on the agenda.

However, it isn’t all good news out of The Stadium of Light, though, with a new injury concern coming to light. Reliable Sunderland reporter Scott Wilson of The Northern Echo shared an injury update ahead of the meeting with Watford following Mowbray’s pre-match press conference.

It was stated that Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, Bradley Dack and Pierre Ekwah, players currently sidelined, will remain out of the next two games prior to the international break, whereas Mowbray has had to change his team up for tonight’s meeting due to a new injury blow to a ‘key player’.

“Without telling you everything, we’ve had to do some tactical changes today. You’ll see the team when it comes out, but there’s a big difference with the injury that’s been picked up.

“That’s meant we’ve had to move the team around to make it work. We’ve had to do that to make sure we have enough people attacking and enough people defending. Otherwise, you have players moving too much in and out of possession and the balance of the team isn’t right. There’s lots of tactical stuff we’ve had to, but this group embrace that. It’s good that they want to learn.

“The challenges are always there. We have picked up an injury to a pretty key player in the way we play, but let’s just push on and see if we can keep the fluency of the team going.”

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Who have been Sunderland’s best players this season?

A number of Sunderland players have impressed so far this season, with five of the squad averaging a WhoScored match rating greater than 7/10. Two of those are Dack and Ekwah, both injured, but the club’s standout performer so far has been winger Jack Clarke. The 22-year-old has scored seven goals in nine Championship games, averaging a 7.79 match rating. He is actually ranked as the top Championship player by WhoScored, whereas Dan Neil and Dan Ballard are also ranked over 7/10.

Therefore, Sunderland supporters will be hoping that the injury isn’t to Clarke, Neil or Ballard, as they have been key to the club’s success in the early stages of the season. Mowbray clearly wants to keep the update quiet for now, so it’ll be interesting to see the team news later tonight. After the meeting with Watford, Sunderland then host Middlesbrough before the international break, where on the other side, Mowbray will hopefully have a number of players back.

Liverpool transfer news: FSG send scouts to watch exciting teenager

Liverpool have sent their scouts to watch an exciting new player from overseas, but a reliable journalist has revealed that they aren’t the only club looking to bring him to the Premier League.

Who are Liverpool's new signings?

Over the summer, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were the four fresh faces to enter the building, all of which have had an instant impact on the first-team, but there were also plenty of players leaving Anfield.

On Merseyside, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were the two senior stars to depart for a fee, whilst the likes of Roberto Firmino and James Milner were let go on a free transfer, alongside Nathaniel Phillips and Fabio Carvalho who were among a group sent out on loan for the remainder of the season, via Transfermarkt.

Having created plenty of space in his squad, Jurgen Klopp is now assessing his options in the market ahead of the next window opening in January and appears to have identified an ideal target in the form of Stuttgart B side’s attacking midfielder Raul Paula.

Germany’s youth international will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign which means the new year will present the Bundesliga outfit with their final opportunity to cash in should they not want to risk losing the 19-year-old for free, and should he head for the exit door, he’s already got two potential suitors waiting for him.

Are Liverpool signing Raul Paula?

Taking to X, The Guardian’s Ed Aarons has confirmed that Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion have both deployed officials to assess the recent performances of Paula as they weigh up whether to make an approach in January. He wrote:

Understand that Brighton and Liverpool have been scouting Germany Under 18 midfielder Raul Paula. He has six goals and two assists in the last nine games for Stuttgart's reserve side.”

Liverpool's Anfield Stadium.

How good is Raul Paula?

Liverpool will be aware that Paula is still a teenager and the fact that he doesn’t have any senior first-team experience under his belt means that he likely wouldn’t be immediately thrown in at the deep end, but there’s no doubting that he could be a wonderful addition for the long-term future of the club.

The FDF client has racked up 36 contributions (21 goals and 15 assists) in 61 appearances since the start of his career, which shows just how prolific he can be in the final third and his desire to get involved with the action in the opposition’s penalty area as much as possible.

Stuttgart B’s number ten has also already had a taste of success having been crowned the German U19s Cup winner during the 2021/22 season, so he would possess the winning mentality needed to match that of the current squad who are already at the AXA Training Centre.

Paula’s price tag remains to be seen so it’s unknown whether chiefs would be happy to splash out for such an inexperienced target, but should the right opportunity present itself thanks to his contract situation, this is certainly a no-brainer of a move to pursue at the beginning of 2024.
