Everton Nearly Made Late Move For Premier League Player

Everton's summer of spending is over after the transfer window closed on Friday night, but they considered signing a Premier League player, according to a new update from journalist James Olley.

Have Everton had a good summer?

The Blues again found themselves in a relegation battle last season, ultimately surviving by the skin of their teeth for the second year in a row, thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Bournemouth on the final day.

While there was happiness and relief at staying in the top flight among the fanbase, there was also a feeling that this cannot afford to keep happening, especially with a move to a new stadium expected to take place next summer.

It was clear that reinforcements were needed during the summer transfer window in order to give Sean Dyche the desired quality in his squad, and a number of new faces have arrived.

They include Arnaut Danjuma and Beto, who have come in to add much-needed quality to the attack, with the former joining on loan from Villarreal and the latter scoring on his debut against Doncaster Rovers in midweek.

However, it has emerged that Everton tried – and failed – to bring in defender Cedric Soares from Arsenal late on in the window.

Did Everton try to sign Cedric Soares?

arsenal-cedric-soares-transfer-fulham-ditch-mikel-arteta

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday morning, Olley claimed that Everton considered making a move for Arsenal right-back Cedric Soares on deadline day, with Olympiacos also seen as potential suitors:

"Everton and Olympiacos showed some interest in Arsenal defender Cedric Soares this week. Didn't materialise into anything yesterday but still time for Olympiacos if they choose to pursue him – Greek transfer deadline is September 11."

Cedric would certainly have been a surprise signing for Everton this summer, and in truth, missing out on him doesn't feel like a huge blow.

Indeed, he hasn't exactly set the world alight since making the move from Southampton to Arsenal, where he has made a total of 59 appearances since his debut in 2020.

The defender was loaned out to Fulham midway through last season and only started twice in the Premier League, as he struggled to become a key man at Craven Cottage.

At 32 years of age, Cedric's best days are likely to be behind him, so he would only have been coming in as a squad option for Everton, so all in all, it shouldn't be seen as one that got away.

That being said, the right-back does still possess some positive attributes, not least having a huge amount of experience at the top level, winning 34 caps for Portugal and making 164 appearances in the Premier League.

Journalist Jacob Steinberg once called him "magnificent" during his Southampton days, and is someone who has quality going forward.

Everton should be just fine at right-back without Cedric making the move to Goodison Park, with Nathan Patterson a solid and young first-choice option at the moment, while Ben Godfrey is arguably a player who can fill in in that position when needed.

The Blues need to be in a position where they are signing players at the peak of their powers or youngsters with high ceilings, and neither of those things applies to Cedric, so not signing him could turn out to be a good decision from the club.

'A bit daunting, but security has been outstanding' – WI coach Stuart Law

West Indies coach Stuart Law also said he was impressed by some of the young players despite they 3-0 drubbing they took from Pakistan

Umar Farooq in Karachi04-Apr-2018A three-day cricket feast in Karachi, after nine barren years, came to an end on Tuesday, with over 70,000 spectators having gone through the turnstiles at National Stadium. West Indies – who last toured Pakistan in 2006 – lost all three games heavily, but won lots of goodwill for the part they played in helping return international cricket to the country.”I’m a big fan of Pakistan cricket,” head coach Stuart Law said at a press conference. “The fans here in the subcontinent are pretty passionate. This was the first time I’d been to Karachi and the fans here were outstanding every night. They were very respectful to us. Everywhere we’ve been, we’ve been treated very well. The security has been outstanding, and we haven’t had any problems.”It’s a bit daunting if you’re not used to the set-up. It’s a bit daunting for the people outside but once you get here and see for yourself, you feel more confident. I’m not saying that it will open the floodgates and bring everyone rushing back, but from what I’ve seen here, it’s more than adequate and we should be able to get cricket back to Pakistan. I feel sorry for the Pakistan players who don’t play enough cricket in front of their home fans. Every game for them is an away game so you feel for those boys who can’t play in front of their families week in week out.”

The tour was somewhat rushed and the IPL is starting soon. We have a lot of players involved in the IPL and their franchises are pretty ruthless when it comes to player activityStuart Law when asked if the result could have been different had West Indies had the time to prepare better

West Indies had committed to touring Pakistan last year, but then the series was postponed to April. It suffered another setback with key players including Chris Gayle and captain Carlos Brathwaite pulling out. Their reluctance to tour Pakistan due to safety concerns has been evident with Cricket West Indies even having to offer them USD 25,000 as extra incentive. In the end, a weakened 13-man squad was assembled together, hastily, and they landed in Karachi mere hours before the opening game on Sunday. The difference in quality between the two sides was stark. Pakistan beat West Indies by a record-breaking 143 runs on Sunday. The second T20I was, again, barely a contest and even though the visitors, reduced to 12 men with Veerasammy Permaul’s injury, put up a better fight in the third game, Pakistan romped home in a chase of 153 with eight wickets and three overs to spare.”The positives we can take is that we brought a very young team here with little experience,” Law said. “I’m pretty impressed with Keemo Paul, who I thought stood out. He worked for us in Zimbabwe in the 50 over format too. Another debutant tonight Andre McCarthy showed good intent with the bat. It’s a difficult task coming here and playing in Pakistan. We did lose the series 3-0 but we got better as the series went on and that’s a good sign for us.”West Indies coach Stuart Law addresses the press conference•WICBWest Indies’ schedule was cramped, and they weren’t able to have a conditioning or training session before or during their three days in Karachi. They were driven back to the airport immediately after the final game to fly home and were unable to shrug of the lingering jet lag. When asked if the result of the series could have been different if his side was given enough time to train, Law said, “You never know, we don’t have a crystal ball. But we got better as the tournament went on. The tour was somewhat rushed and the IPL is starting soon. We have a lot of players involved in the IPL and their franchises are pretty ruthless when it comes to player activity. It wasn’t probably ideal timing, but I’m glad for the people here in Karachi. When you look back, yes I’m disappointed with our result, but there’s lot of smiles on faces, and there are lot of people happy out here.”I thought every time we went out we had a more positive attitude towards the game. We probably lacked desire in the first two games whether that was jet lag or whatever, it’s still no excuse playing international cricket and representing your country, your people, your family and yourself. So you shouldn’t have to be up for any contest, it should be automatic. But Pakistan are playing with a lot of confidence at the moment, and playing very good cricket.”

Media Fume at VAR Decision In Rangers vs Celtic

A number of journalists were left stunned by the decision to disallow Rangers of a first-half goal in their clash at home to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Did Rangers beat Celtic in the derby?

The Gers had made a solid enough start to the season before the weekend action, picking up six points from their opening three league matches, although their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of PSV Eindhoven in midweek saw them crash out of the Champions League before the group stages.

For that reason, confidence may not have been particularly high heading into Sunday's visit of bitter rivals and reigning Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, with the Hoops one point ahead of them before kickoff. There was the opportunity for them to overtake their adversaries, however, acting as a huge incentive.

Rangers thought they had taken the lead during the first half when Cyriel Dessers robbed Gustaf Lagerbielke of the ball, before squaring to Kemar Roofe to fire into the net and send the home crowd wild. The goal was ruled out, however, with the former adjudged to have fouled the Celtic man when getting to the ball, much to the frustration of those inside the stadium.

Michael Beale's side then found themselves behind seconds before half-time, with Kyogo Furuhashi firing home to emphatic finish to put the visitors 1-0 up, finding himself clean-through and nailing a strike past Jack Butland, a goal which proved to be the winner.

Rangers head coach Michael Beale.

How did the media react to Rangers' disallowed goal?

Taking to X, journalist John Barnes was left shocked by the decision at Ibrox, not holding back on his thoughts on it:

"OMG can’t believe the referee has got it wrong as well as VAR. Lagerbielke kicked Dessers. The goal should have stood. Another shocker this weekend by officials @RangersFC v @CelticFC the head of referees can’t hide any longer he must explain."

Meanwhile, Jonny McFarlane described it as a "baffling" moment in the game on X, proving to be pivotal to the result, too:

"That’s a baffling decision. Totally agree with Kenny Miller. Lagerbielke kicks Dessers."

This was yet another case of VAR proving to be divisive in the modern game, and the decision not to allow Roofe's goal is another where there will be differing opinions.

In fairness, there did appear to be some contact with Lagerbielke, but whether there was enough to actually overrule the original decision is up for debate, and it ultimately cost Rangers at a critical point in the game.

It further raises question marks over how much VAR impacts the general footballing spectacle as a supporter these days, with the technology robbing fans of celebrating in the moment, instead having to worry about their joy turning to despair once a check has been done.

Granted, it does lead to some correct decisions being made, but it could be argued that it is having too detrimental impact on the all-round enjoyment of football, especially as some of the officiating remains questionable even with VAR in use, as highlighted once again at Ibrox.

Bangladesh let down by lack of strike rotation

On the boundary tally, the teams were neck and neck. Bangladesh hit 12 fours to go with their three sixes; India 13 fours and three sixes. Where Bangladesh let themselves down, however, was when it came to picking the gaps – their 43 singles put in the shade by India’s 58. All told, 56% of the deliveries Bangladesh faced were dot balls, as batsmen repeatedly attempted to hit boundaries, and routinely collected nothing but fresh air. India’s dot-ball percentage was only 32%, and there, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah felt, was where the game was decided.”We probably played more than 50 dot balls today [68, to be exact], and when that happens you create pressure on individual batsmen,” he said. “I played seven dot balls and got out cheaply. It’s hard to get going if you’re relying so much on boundaries. If you can rotate the strike and score boundaries at the same time, it will release the pressure on the batsmen.”Of particular concern were the middle overs. Bangladesh were not terribly placed after the Powerplay, having hit 44 for 2 from the first six overs. But between overs 7 and 12 – while top order batsmen were still at the crease – they scored four runs or fewer in four separate overs, and the innings lost steam. There would be a brief upsurge while Liton Das and Sabbir Rahman batted together, but with so much ground to make up they were forced to attempt high-risk strokes.”We often lose our rhythm when batting in the middle overs,” Mahmudullah said. “When boundaries weren’t coming, we struggled to take ones and twos. Then we gave away our wickets. I think the blame goes to our batsmen, particularly on this wicket. especially when you’re playing with five bowlers and six batters, obviously you need to do something. Someone has to step up.”This six-wicket loss to India is Bangladesh’s fifth consecutive defeat in T20s, and their 13th in their last 14 matches. They have been consistently woeful in this format since mid-2016, for all their gains in Tests and ODI cricket. In these last five matches, Bangladesh have failed to breach 150 three times.”We need to be fearless – not thinking about our doubts,” Mahmudullah said. “Otherwise no point playing these games. We’ve been discussing that we need to express ourselves, whatever happens. T20 is about taking those calculated risks.”

England's lower gear, Stokes' focus and Taylor on one leg

England and New Zealand played out an entertaining series, although the decider was one-sided. What stood out over the five matches?

England’s batting can adaptThere was little doubt about England’s prowess on true batting pitches, but questions remained how willing they were to curb their natural instincts with the Champions Trophy semi-final against Pakistan and two startling collapses against the swinging ball, at Lord’s and in Adelaide, as examples. The victory in Wellington on a grubby, uneven drop-in pitch was, therefore, significant with them having to assess that it wasn’t even a 270 wicket and dig their way to a defendable score. In fact, the major collapse which came in this series was a new variety: losing 8 for 46 in Dunedin having been 267 for 1. But to knock off the runs in Christchurch in such domineering fashion meant that the batting bandwagon continued to role.Liam Plunkett plays a vital roleLed by Man of the Series Chris Woakes, England were outstanding with the new ball – never letting New Zealand get off to a flyer and twice keeping them to under three-an-over in the first 10. In three of the matches that was backed up very effectively by the spin pair of Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali. However, the contrast between spin and pace in the middle overs was stark: between overs 11 and 40, the spinners took 11 wickets and conceded 4.50 per over, the quicks took three wickets and conceded 5.96. Partly, that can be attributed to the spinners bowling extensively in that period, but it also highlighted the crucial role that Liam Plunkett has played in extracting life when the two new balls have become a little softer and before ‘death’ skills take over. In 2017, Plunkett was the fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODIs. He is in that World Cup starting XI, fitness permitting.New Zealand have a problem at the topNew Zealand’s opening partnership had a shocker. The highest stand between Martin Guptill and Colin Munro in five matches was 12. It meant, in the four matches he played, Kane Williamson was exposed early. He is good enough to overcome that, but it’s an added pressure on the captain. Barring his 49 in Wellington – a worthy if lucky innings – Munro was batting in single digits. It appeared to have a knock-on effect on Guptill who, even in his two more substantial innings, could not break the shackles. Munro had showed some promise when pushed up to the opening role but against high-quality seam and swing he is vulnerable. With the 2019 World Cup in the first part of the English season, that could be a problem.Ross Taylor brings out the trademark hundred celebration•Getty Images

Ben Stokes can keep his focusThe start of the series marked the big comeback. Five months after the incident in Bristol that led to a not-guilty plea to a charge of affray, Ben Stokes returned to international cricket. In truth it was a soft landing, a world away from the reception and scrutiny he would have received in Australia. Still, Stokes has had a lot on his plate so it wasn’t a given how seamlessly he would slot back in. Parking the debate about whether he should have been on the tour, it was a successful series for him. He almost turned the opening match with two wickets and was Man of the Match in Mount Maunganui. He was never used for his full 10 overs – and his Test workload will be interesting to watch – but he hit good pace, looked in decent nick with the bat (his determination in Wellington was impressive) and was a livewire in the field.Ish Sodhi makes his caseAt the beginning of the series, Ish Sodhi was effectively included in the squad as cover for fellow legspinner Todd Astle who was carrying a niggle. He quickly became the first-choice. Hamilton was Sodhi’s first ODI since last May, when New Zealand took a second-string side to Ireland, but was preferred throughout when the XI wanted two spinners and his career-best 4 for 58 helped turn the match in Dunedin. There was some severe tap for him in Christchurch courtesy of Jonny Bairstow and there remained plenty of loose stuff thrown in, but he is a wicket-taker. Continuing to work on his batting and fielding could be key to whether he makes the 2019 World Cup squad.Ross Taylor on one leg is better than some on twoIt’s a decent pub debate: was New Zealand’s greatest ODI innings played by Ross Taylor in Dunedin? He is batting on another level at the moment, the unbeaten 181 followed another matchwinning hundred in Hamilton, and New Zealand will be desperate that his body stands up for at least another 18 months. Alongside Williamson he is irreplaceable in this current New Zealand era. The match he was run out in and the two he missed, New Zealand lost. Though Tom Latham showed development in the middle-order role – combining with Taylor for stands of 178 and 187 – the loss of either Taylor or Williamson is too great a burden for the team to cover.

Man United: Ten Hag now chasing Rasmus Hojlund’s old teammate

Manchester United have run checks on one of Rasmus Hojlund's old teammates over the international break and are well acquainted with what he would offer if they made a move, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

As per The Guardian, Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has been ousted from the first-team picture at Old Trafford and will train away from the senior squad at Old Trafford after refusing to apologise for his public rebuttal to Erik Ten Hag's criticism of his performances in training.

Sancho has since taken down his statement on social media platform X that read: "Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue, I have conducted myself in training very well this week. I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!"

Nevertheless, it now looks like his future at the club is in doubt. According to The Manchester Evening News, Sancho is reportedly open to leaving the club in January and some close to his camp believe that it may be in his best interest to seek a new challenge elsewhere. His former club Borussia Dortmund and Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest have been named as two potential destinations.

Ahead of the Red Devils' home clash against Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Saturday, manager Ten Hag has confirmed that Lisandro Martinez will be available for selection following his injury against Arsenal before the international break.

Raphael Varane and Mason Mount are progressing well in their recovery from injury issues; however, both aren't ready to take any part in the clash this weekend.

Which one of Rasmus Hojlund's old teammates are United interested in?

According to 90min, Manchester United ran checks on Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini during the international break by scouting the 19-year-old in Italy's 2-1 victory over Ukraine in EURO 2024 qualifying at the San Siro.

Benfica starlet Antonio Silva was also watched by Manchester United scouts; however, they may face competition from arch-rivals Liverpool, who are also keeping tabs on both players and sent club officials out to observe their performances.

In the case of Scalvini, he has made 58 appearances in all competitions since breaking through at Atalanta, registering three goals and two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

This term, the Chiari-born ace has managed to obtain an average match rating of 7.23/10 in Serie A for his exploits on the pitch, winning 3.3 aerial duels per fixture, according to WhoScored.

Scalvini has also excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five leagues in the art of progressive passes, completing around 5.69 per 90 minutes in the last 365 days, putting him in the 94th percentile for this metric, as per FBRef.

Manchester United have conceded seven goals in their opening four matches in the Premier League, signifying that they have plenty of room for improvement in defence. In the near future, Scalvini could prove to be a long-term solution to issues in the backline at Old Trafford if they can get a deal done to secure his signature.

What do they actually do? Journalist baffled by Man United medical team

Manchester United are in the midst of a catastrophic start to the season at Old Trafford and things could get worse before they get better, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

On Wednesday evening, Manchester United were defeated 4-3 away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and flattered to deceive in the encounter despite mounting a late fightback, as per BBC Sport.

Red Devils' goalkeeper Andre Onana made a mistake that led to Leroy Sane giving his side the lead in the tie and took the unusual step of bravely fronting up to the media to apologise for his error, stating to TNT Sports: "It's difficult to lose this way because in the beginning we started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game. It's a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I'm the one who let the team down. Because of me we didn't win but we just have to move on. This is the life of the goalkeeper."

Manchester United have now lost three consecutive matches under Erik Ten Hag and pressure is mounting on his side to improve results amid a backdrop of negative sentiment off the field at Old Trafford. England international Jadon Sancho has hit the headlines recently due to his public spat with the Dutchman, which has yet to lead to a resolution that will see him return to first-team action.

Further fall-out has resulted from his absence, with Sancho seen playing the video game EA Sports 24 as his teammates were preparing to face off against Bayern Munich. Next up for Manchester United is an away clash against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday night as they aim to recover from their recent slump in form to rise up the Premier League table.

What has Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld said about Manchester United?

Writing for Sky Germany, via Sport Witness, Schmidt-Sommerfeld has aired some of his thoughts on the current situation at Manchester United and harbours anxiety that things at Old Trafford could "quickly" get even worse if they do not improve results on the pitch.

The Sky reporter has ripped into United boss Ten Hag, labelling him a "shambles" and indicating that his side's start to life in 2023/24 is not just down to misfortune with injuries. The journalist did however state he doesn't know "what the medical department actually does" given the mounting list of players in the treatment room.

Manchester United manager EriktenHag on the touchline

In conversation with beIN SPORTS via The Daily Mail, ex-Liverpool player Jason McAteer has claimed that Manchester United have lost their fear factor and he has also questioned their identity as a side.

Ripping into several first-team players, McAteer stated: "They don't have the players who want to put the hard yards in when its get tough. Fernandes, is he going to roll his sleeves up as a captain? No. Antony, Rashford, Martial? (Martial) They can't even get him fit and he doesn't even want to play."

Looking ahead, it remains to be seen if Manchester United can rediscover the resilience that they showed last term or whether their recent stagnation is more than just a minor cause for concern.

West Ham: Insider says "wonderful" player will now be "allowed to leave"

West Ham United are reported to have already made a transfer decision for next summer concerning one "wonderful" player in David Moyes' squad.

Latest West Ham news

The Irons have enjoyed a very productive beginning to their 2023/2024 Premier League season with three wins from their opening four matches.

Impressive victories over in-form Brighton, big-spending Chelsea and league newcomers Luton Town highlight the terrific job Moyes has done so far.

It took high-flying Man City to finally end their hot streak with Pep Guardiola's side beating them 3-1 at the London Stadium last weekend, courtesy of goals from Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.

West Ham are fighting on multiple fronts yet again this term, as they gear up for another European campaign with the Europa League opener against Backa Tapola this evening.

Certain squad members, like Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez for example, have thrived under Moyes so far.

The former duo are being rewarded with the offer of fresh terms, while the latter – having only just arrived in the summer window – look to be very astute signings.

Who could leave West Ham?

It appears Moyes' best side is taking shape, and there are a few squad members who may have uncertain futures in east London.

The likes of Maxwel Cornet and Ben Johnson have struggled for game time under Moyes, with West Ham insider Sean Whetstone sharing an update on the latter player.

Johnson, who has been praised for some of his performances in recent years, now finds himself behind the likes of Vladimir Coufal and Thilo Kehrer in the pecking order.

6 foot 2.co.uk editor Whetstone, who has also contributed to insider website Claret & Hugh, says the 23-year-old "will be allowed to leave" next year upon the expiry of his contract.

He wrote on X: "Hammers Ben Johnson and Conor Coventry will NOT be offered new West Ham contracts and will both be allowed to leave as free agents next summer when their current agreements expire."

How good is Ben Johnson?

West Ham defender Ben Johnson.

The England Under-21 international has been a player of real promise in recent seasons; contributing effectively for West Ham in parts over the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons.

Johnson made his debut for the club against Man City all the way back in 2019, but it appears this will now be his final season in Claret and Blue.

Former assistant coach Stuart Pearce, speaking back in 2021, hailed the right-back as a "wonderful professional".

"The most important thing about Ben is whenever you pass him or meet him first thing in the morning, he's got a smile on his face. He takes in all the knowledge you can pass on to him," said Pearce.

"He's a wonderful professional to deal with and work with. We're very proud to have him out of our academy system as well, which is a real plus for us, especially with the connection to this club with the academy.

"I think he's just developing and getting better and better, and like with all young players, the more game time they have, the better they'll get, so I am delighted for the boy."
