  • Has scored four times in the last three matches
  • Arsenal's top scorer this season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international has displayed scintillating form of late, having scored five times in Arsenal's last five Premier League outings, including a brace against West Ham last weekend. Despite his rich vein of form, Manchester United legend Ferdinand thinks that the winger is yet to attain world-class status as he has not proved his worth in the Champions League yet.

  • WHAT RIO FERDINAND SAID

Speaking on the podcast, the former England defender said: "Not yet. Listen. I think Saka's been unreal. I actually think he needs a bit of a rest, so many games for a young kid. But I think, it's almost like what is world-class? He hasn't done it in the Champions League, has he? I'm talking in the nitty-gritty stages. Saka's top, don't get me wrong. He's not world-class yet."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With his opening strike against the Hammers on Sunday, the attacker achieved the milestone of scoring his 50th club goal in 210 appearances at the age of just 22. Saka later doubled his tally in the second half to bring up his 51st goal for the Gunners. The English star is also the north London side's highest goalscorer this season with 13 goals to his name.

Spurs have reportedly made bid for De JongBarcelona have offered midfielder a new dealNetherlands international yet to put pen to paperWHAT HAPPENED?

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona have essentially given De Jong an ultimatum, and have demanded he either sign the contract that has been offered to him – it has been on the table since November – or bring an offer to the table. Following that report, Jijantes claims that Tottenham have made a bid worth €60m (£51m) for the midfielder, and have offered him a four-year deal with the same wages he is currently earning at the Camp Nou. It remains to be seen if De Jong would be willing to make that move, or if Spurs would need to sell players to fund it, given the costs involved.

De Jong's current contract expires in 2026, and Barca are aware that this summer may mark the final time they can receive a hefty fee for the 26-year-old, and would prefer to go into the next transfer window knowing his intention to either leave or remain. There is rival interest to Spurs, with Chelsea and Manchester United also interested, along with Paris Saint-Germain. Barca have placed a €100m (£85m) asking price on De Jong.

De Jong remains a key part of Barcelona's squad and has made 23 appearances in all competitions, with his only absences coming through either injury or suspension. He has also won 54 caps for the Netherlands.

It's win or bust for Chelsea! Blues must beat Liverpool in Carabao Cup final to salvage their season – and opportunity knocks

Sunday's showpiece is potentially must-win for Mauricio Pochettino, and the stars may just be aligning for his Chelsea side

In years gone by, the League Cup was a mere appetiser for trophy-gorging Chelsea; a first, less significant piece of silverware on the menu to get them in the mood for bigger and better things in the months to come. In 2024, though, winning the much-derided cup will almost certainly make or break their season.

Mauricio Pochettino's side face Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday, and while the Reds find themselves in the enviable position of still being in the hunt for four different pieces of silverware, the Carabao Cup represents Chelsea's most realistic chance of winning a first trophy since the Club World Cup in 2022.

A victory for the Blues would be priceless – both in terms of the feeling around the club and tangibly in the form of guaranteed European football in 2024-25. The game seems to be coming around at just the right time, and it is an opportunity they must seize with both hands.

Getty ImagesDepleted opponent

Chelsea have had more than their fair share of injury issues this season, and they are still without captain Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella, among others, ahead of the final.

However, the tables may have turned in their favour ahead of Sunday's showdown. Liverpool have boasted a relatively clean bill of health throughout the season bar long-term absentees Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, but their own injury problems have deepened significantly in recent weeks.

While Chelsea are already accustomed to doing without the likes of James, Fofana and Cucurella, Jurgen Klopp will be without a host of first-team players who have played key roles in their campaign to date; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones are all sidelined, as is No.1 goalkeeper Alisson. If that wasn't bad enough, there are also doubts over key attacking players Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.

Of course, Liverpool still possess a wealth of quality, dispatching Brentford and Luton in consecutive 4-1 victories despite having all of those players missing, but the upheaval within the squad may just level the playing field at Wembley somewhat.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFinally showing some form

Liverpool's fitness woes have certainly contributed to an inescapable sense that this game just might be arriving at the perfect interval for Chelsea. It would be wrong to say the west Londoners are 'in form', given they are far too inconsistent to pinpoint exactly what 'form' is for this iteration of the Blues, but in the past three games they have played some of their best football of the entire season – and there are signs that they are maybe, , capable of putting a run of results together in the remainder of the campaign to salvage something.

Chelsea sprung a surprise as they dominated from the first whistle to the last against high-flying Aston Villa in their FA Cup fourth-round replay, deservedly running out 3-1 winners. That was followed by a hard-earned comeback victory over Crystal Palace, showing some new-found mettle to snatch victory at the death.

They so nearly capped their resurgence with an admirable away win at title-chasing Manchester City, but they lost control of the game after a very solid 70 minutes and were instead forced to settle for a creditable draw.

All of this bodes well, and they must carry the same hunger into Sunday. Pochettino knows this. "In the last few weeks, we have learned a lot and stepped up," he said in his pre-final press conference. "We arrive in a very good moment and condition. After Wolves, [the wins that followed] provided the team with confidence and trust. It was a click to change to compete that we maybe missed."

Getty Images Guaranteed European football

Chelsea may well feel that they have more to play for, too. Liverpool are still fighting on four fronts – leading the Premier League, standing a very good chance of winning the Europa League, and facing a favourable FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Southampton. The Carabao Cup, then, is arguably the lowest priority.

For Pochettino's men, this final now represents the most obvious route to securing European football for next season, with the winner gaining passage to the Conference League playoff round – although their participation could be thrown into doubt over potential financial breaches.

That won't be added motivation for Klopp's Reds, who are all-but guaranteed Champions League football, but should be for Chelsea, who are still mired in mid-table in the Premier League and face plenty of competition to win the FA Cup – which secures a place in the Europa League.

If the Blues can find some modicum of form over the next three months, the intention will surely be to push as far up the league table as possible. But if all else fails, the Conference League at least offers something of a safety net and a platform to build to better things.

Getty Helping hand from broadcasters

The fixture schedulers may have also handed Chelsea a significant advantage. Having last played on Saturday, the Blues have had a week and a day to prepare for the final, while Liverpool found themselves in midweek action against Luton.

That game was rescheduled from Saturday during the 3pm blackout as a result of the Reds reaching the Carabao Cup final, but Chelsea have avoided the same fate despite originally being slated to play Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Friday, February 23.

Why? Because that game had already been selected for broadcast by Sky Sports, and therefore it could not be moved to clash with Champions League games being played in midweek and broadcast on TNT Sports, per an agreement between the two networks.

Klopp has often bemoaned broadcasters' influence on the congested fixture schedule, and Liverpool's injury list suggests he has good reason, so this rearrangement will leave him quietly seething. Luton provided his depleted team with a worthy test on Wednesday night, so he will hope they have enough in the tank on Sunday.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Reds legend described Darwin Nunez's opening strike against Brentford as "insane" as he was left in disbelief by the Uruguayan forward's ability to convert such an outrageous goal. Owen, though, also shared a word of advice for the former Benfica player as he urged him to adapt his way of thinking going forward.

  • WHAT MICHAEL OWEN SAID

Reacting to Nunez's goal, the former England international took to X where he wrote, "That finish from Darwin Nunez yesterday was insane. I can’t stop watching it. And I can’t begin to explain how difficult a skill that is. Moving at pace, the ball running away from you, being inside the box with no room for error. Incredible. But, it is also further proof that if he is to get closer to becoming the great player many people think he can be, he has to adapt his way of thinking.

"I mean, to even consider that finish is madness. It’s a 1 in 10, 2 in 10 finish at best. Learning to slot, dink or go round the GK is a far more productive way to score and will increase his chances to 4 or 5 in 10, thus massively increasing his end return. I’m really not trying to rain on his parade as that goal was pure class. But I’d rather see it when Liverpool are 3-0 up, not at 0-0."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After handing his team in the first half, the 24-year-old striker was taken offat half-time which Jurgen Klopp described to be a precautionary measure as the player felt some discomfort during the half-time break. Liverpool were also jolted by the injuries to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota who were also forced off to add to the club's injury woes.

The 20-year-old Norwegian forward came through Manchester City's academy and has enjoyed a breakout season under Pep Guardiola this term. WHAT BOBB SAID

On extending his stay at the Etihad, the young forward said: "It’s an amazing moment and to know that I get the chance for at least a few years now to hopefully be a part of this club’s first team. It’s an honour. It’s something I really wanted when the opportunity came – it was the only thing I wanted to do. Being part of it for the last couple of months, I feel like I’ve developed more than ever – it was an easy choice.

“Playing with some of my idols growing up, it’s a dream come true. It’s strange talking to my friends at home who always ask, ‘how is it?’ and in a way it is crazy, but you do get used to it and you start seeing them as people. It’s nice.”

Bobb added on what it's like to play under Guardiola: "I grew up watching not only his early City teams but from his Barcelona and Bayern Munich days. The type of football he plays is amazing and how he improves players is a big factor for why everybody wants to play under him. He’s proven time and time again that he improves players – so intense, so hard working and a nice guy.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bobb has already made several vital contributions to City in his breakout season. He scored his first senior goal for the club in a Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade in December before netting the last-minute winner in the league against Newcastle in January, which was awarded the Premier League Goal of the Month. Bobb joins the likes of fellow academy stars Phil Foden and Rico Lewis in signing new deals as City look to cement their position at the top of European football for many years to come.

Kehrer let West Ham down against Chelsea

VAR once again reared its ugly head as West Ham United suffered defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in this afternoon’s Premier League clash.

West Ham were hoping to continue their good form of late, having won two of their previous three fixtures and they took the lead through a Michail Antonio effort following a first half that featured no shots on target for either side.

Antonio’s strike came with just under 30 minutes remaining but Ben Chilwell equalised from a tight angle with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Kai Havertz looked like he had scored the winner with a clinical header from a Chilwell cross before Maxwel Cornet thought he had snuck an equaliser in the last minute.

However, he was alleged to have made a foul on Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and the goal was subsequently disallowed, leaving West Ham stuck on four points from six matches.

Moyes’ defence badly let him down, however, with summer arrival Thilo Kehrer contributing heavily towards the defeat.

Kehrer failed Moyes against Chelsea

Having arrived from PSG, Kehrer was expected to improve West Ham’s backline, but he hasn’t exactly impressed in his four matches so far, receiving a rating of only 6.38 from SofaScore – having given away a penalty on his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion and scoring an own goal against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek.

He was the lowest rated player on the pitch against Chelsea, with just 6.2 given as per SofaScore, and contributed very little to the West Ham cause.

The German made zero tackles, one interception and was dribbled past once during the match. Kehrer also lost 100% of his duels during the clash and the Chelsea frontline took advantage of this to secure a slightly undeserved win.

His pass success rate was only 79% and it clearly wasn’t the defender’s best day at the office. He should be up to Premier League speed now and improvement is needed before his side’s next match.

Moyes will be disappointed with the VAR decision and rightly so, but West Ham’s defensive problems continue, as Kehrer once again badly failed the 59-year-old on Saturday afternoon.

Graham Smyth makes Leeds free agent claim

Reliable journalist Graham Smyth says it would be a big shock if Leeds United sign a free agent at left-back before the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Free agents available

The summer window is now closed for another year, with the Whites now focusing on Premier League commitments as they look to respond after last weekend’s 5-2 defeat at Brentford.

That being said, there are still free agents available who could be signed at any point – Wolves look set to tie up a deal for Diego Costa for example.

Leeds had an impressive summer, splashing the cash after losing Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, but left-back is an area of the pitch where the squad still looks light, and a host of free agents in that position have been linked with a move.

The Latest: Smyth rules out signing

Writing in a Q&A for The Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth was asked by one supporter if Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch may look into the unemployed market to find their solution at left-back:

“I would be stunned if they dipped into the free agent market for any signing. It just doesn’t feel like the kind of thing Leeds do. They had quite specific plans going into the summer transfer window, for each position, and had there been someone available on a free it would have happened long before now.

“If you’re fishing in that pond it suggests something has likely gone awry and while I believe they are a little light in that position, Marsch and Orta are content with what they have at left-back, in Junior Firpo, Pascal Struijk and Leo Hjelde.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-50/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Enough depth to get by

While Leeds’ left-back options aren’t necessarily perfect – Junior Firpo has been inconsistent, Stuart Dallas is injured and Pascal Struijk is better centrally – there is enough quality to get by for the time being.

Signing a free agent would feel a little like a panic buy when one isn’t required and Marsch will have complete faith in the options at his disposal currently, especially with youngster Leo Hjelde continuing to mature.

Come January, the manager may return to the market to sign a left-back, but that is likely to depend on Firpo’s performances and the injury situation at that point.

Dawson set to miss more West Ham games

West Ham’s centre-back woes from last season have continued into the new campaign, with the latest news confirming that Craig Dawson’s thigh injury will rule him out for at least another couple of weeks.

Last season saw the 32-year-old defender hold together a defence that was missing Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna at various points in the season through injury, as he made 34 appearances in the Premier League and earned a spot in the Europa League team of the season for his performances.

David Moyes looked to amend that problem this summer with the signings of Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer but the former picked up an injury in pre-season, while Issa Diop was sold to Fulham, which has once again left the Scottish manager short at the back.

Dawson has yet to feature this season because of an injury that he was seemingly carrying for a lot of last season and Claret and Hugh have now confirmed that he is likely to miss the next four fixtures as he continues to be absent from training.

Moyes should be worried

While the signings of Aguerd and Kehrer might have moved Dawson down the pecking order, he has proved himself to be an extremely reliable member of Moyes’ squad during his time at the London Stadium and the manager will no doubt be worried about his continued absence from proceedings.

Noel Whelan was full of praise for the former Rochdale man last season, saying:

“Even though they’ve got Kurt Zouma as a record signing, I think Dawson is the main man at the back. That has been an incredible signing by David Moyes.

“You’ve got Dawson on the scoresheet, Bowen on the scoresheet. There are certain players in that side who they can not do without. Those two are massive for that football club.

“Dawson is like a captain at the back, he’s a leader and he brings out the best of any centre-half who plays next to him.”

Kehrer has endured a difficult start to life with the Hammers, averaging a shocking 6.01 rating from WhoScored for his performance, which is significantly lower than the 6.70 rating Dawson averaged last season.

The defender impressed in a number of metrics, making 0.9 tackles per game which was the highest of any natural centre-back at West Ham last term. He was only dribbled past 0.3 times per game too, the second-best rate in the squad. Those numbers illustrate just how important a part of the squad he has been and with a lack of points on the board early in the season, his influence would be vital.

Indeed, West Ham have managed just one win and one clean sheet in the Premier League this term, which suggests that defensive improvements are required if they are to challenge for Europe once again this season.

Therefore, the fact that Dawson is still struggling with injury is undoubtedly a big worry for Moyes, especially as he will want more squad depth as the Europa Conference League kicks off this week, and the Scottish manager will be hoping that he returns to full fitness as soon as possible.

N17 cult hero praises ‘sensational’ Spurs ace

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Rodrigo Bentancur after Saturday’s 6-2 victory over Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ win against Leicester

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the Lilywhites at the weekend as they ripped a struggling Foxes side to shreds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Uruguay international bagged his first goal for the north London club since arriving at Hotspur Way in January, also adding an assist to his emphatic performance.

After the game, Spurs teammate Eric Dier showered praise on the 25-year-old, saying the “biggest compliment” he could pay Bentancur was “we play well when he plays well” (via football.london).

The Latest: Robinson full of praise

Robinson, who made 175 appearances for the Lilywhites, has hailed Bentancur for his incredible start to life in a Tottenham shirt, impressed by his recent performance against Leicester.

Speaking with Football Insider, the former goalkeeper said:

“He has been amazing since he has come in. Him and Kulusevski have been fantastic signings.

“Players take different amounts of time to settle into the Premier League. Bentancur was given a birth in the team early and has since made himself undroppable. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet. He has offensive and defensive capabilities.

“The team has improved a lot under Antonio Conte and Bentancur is a big part of that.

“Everyone thought [Yves] Bissouma would come into the team when Spurs signed him in the summer but Bentancur and [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg have been that good.

“Bentancur is a player that goes under the radar, but he’s been sensational. His all-round performance is excellent, it really has.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Bentancur flying

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the midfielder ranks in the 88th percentile for pass completion, in the 85th percentile for pressures and in the 82nd percentile for assists.

These wide-spread attributes illustrate why Bentancur has been such a good fit for the Premier League, especially considering he was used to player at a slower pace in Serie A.

With statistical comparisons made to the likes of Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets, Liverpool’s Fabinho and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, it is little surprise to see such praise for the Uruguayan, who is proving to be a great signing for Tottenham.

Sunderland team news vs Morecambe

James Hunter has now dropped another boost for Sunderland alongside Aiden McGeady before they play Morecambe in League One on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: McGeady boost

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Alex Neil revealed (via The Chronicle) that McGeady has made ‘good progress’ and is back training with the squad, putting him in contention for a potential return from injury.

The former Norwich City and Preston North End manager also gave updates on other players’ fitness as they aim to wrap up a play-0ff place on the final day.

The Latest: Dajaku update

Taking to Twitter, The Chronicle journalist Hunter shared an update on Dajaku, saying that he is ‘expected’ to be back on Wearside on Monday.

The Union Berlin loanee has been suffering from illness, but now it looks like he could make a swift recovery in time for the play-offs, should they get there.

The Verdict: Big boost

The fact that Dajaku could play a part in the play-offs is certainly a big boost for the Stadium of Light faithful.

On top of his four goals and three assists in the league, he has picked up one man-of-the-match award, and also ranks highly among his teammates in terms of average shots, dribbles and crosses per match (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, his creativity and flair could be the difference for the Black Cats as they look to chase promotion back up to the Championship.
