Petersen and Davies hit 63 and 58 respectively, with the latter’s innings including three straight sixes against left-arm spinner Tom Smith.Lancashire, who retain top spot in Division Two following a first defeat in four, were ultimately bowled out for 208 inside 57 overs as Jones and company built on last week’s win over Essex with a 22-point haul. Craig Miles led the way with 4 for 58 and David Payne added 3 for 31.Reece breaks hand after dismissal

Lancashire’s out-of-form batsman Luis Reece is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken hand following his dismissal during Lancashire’s defeat against Gloucestershire at Old Trafford.
Lancashire head coach Ashley Giles said: “Luis has broken his hand, so he’s going to be out for a long time. That’s unfortunate, but it’s an opportunity for somebody else. I’m not sure yet how he’s done it. I will have to look into that situation.”

Eight wickets fell before lunch, including the first two in Lancashire’s second innings as they slipped to 11 for 2 following the departures of openers Luis Reece and Paul Horton. Reece, who has endured a miserable start to the season, was trapped lbw by Payne and Horton caught behind driving loosely at Miles.Shortly after lunch, Lancashire slipped further as Ashwell Prince and stand-in captain Steven Croft fell, leaving Lancashire four down and still 278 away from their target. Prince and Croft were both caught behind off Miles and Payne respectively.Petersen and Davies steadied the ship and then counter-attacked, with Davies taking a particularly liking to Smith. He hit 14 off Smith’s first over, including the first six, with the ex-Sussex man conceding 43 off his first five overs. The visitors were given a significant pre-tea boost when Davies miscued a pull at medium pacer Kieran Noema-Barnett to midwicket and when Petersen sliced Payne to cover, the game was Gloucestershire’s for the taking.Peter Siddle fell shortly afterwards to Norwell, caught behind off a top edged pull, but Jordan Clark and Nathan Buck continued to chase a home win. They hit three more sixes off Smith upon his return to the attack as the target dropped below 100 before departing in successive overs.Buck was caught behind off Norwell and Clark was trapped lbw by Miles, who wrapped up the win by bowling Simon Kerrigan.Gloucestershire started the day at 206 for 3, leading by 230, but they lost six for 69 to force a declaration following Norwell’s injury earlier in the match.Peter Handscomb was run out for 76 following a mix-up with Hamish Marshall, ending their fourth-wicket partnership of 134, before Jones was caught at mid-off off Kerrigan’s left-arm spin. Marshall fell eight short of his hundred when he was bowled by a Kyle Jarvis delivery which kept low. Siddle struck twice to finish with 4 for 39 in his final appearance.

T20 has messed our cricket up – Lloyd

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd has said that West Indies cricket has been “messed up” by T20 cricket, creating a situation where playing Tests for the country did not seem to be a paramount goal for players

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd has said that West Indies cricket has been “messed up” by the T20 format, creating a situation where playing Tests for the country did not seem to be a paramount goal for players.Speaking at the Annual New Year’s lecture in Cape Town, which is also hosting the third Test between South Africa and West Indies, Lloyd said that the ICC needed to be stronger and that the game could not be ruled by only three countries – a reference to the governance and financial restructuring of the ICC cricket’s governing body, which took place last year and was based on changes devised by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB.”They [the players] earn a good wage and that’s the situation that they have. They have the choice to play Test cricket or T20,” Lloyd, who is head of the West Indies selection panel, said. “We are small islands and if you get a whole host of money, you are a king. This T20 competition has messed our cricket up.”Someone like Andre Russell, I spoke to him only a month ago and said you can get into our Test side because you are one of the best allrounders in the world. A couple of weeks later he told me he has got a bad knee and could only play one-dayers. It’s such a waste that we have a guy who could be a great cricketer who is now not thinking of playing both formats. We have contracts, probably not as exorbitant as others, but they are getting good money. It doesn’t seem playing for our country is paramount where these players are concerned.Lloyd to SA: Don’t take dominance for granted

As one of the most successful captains in cricket and a leader of a side that dominated their era, Clive Lloyd offered a few words of advice for South Africa, who are the No. 1 ranked Test team in the world. Lloyd said that South Africa will need to maintain a high standard of domestic cricket and that administrators should ensure that the game benefits from all new forms of technology and innovation.
“I am hesitant to offer advice to a nation that sits atop world cricket. My first bit of advice is not to take one’s dominance for granted the continued success of a team is to plan for the future,” Lloyd said. “The West Indies made the mistake of believing we had an endless supply of cricketers and fast bowlers. A high standard of domestic cricket needs to be maintained to ensure continued success at this level.
“The administrators and managers are absolutely necessary. The administration must ensure the cricket being played benefits from all the new innovations and technology, and nothing is done to undermine the administration of cricket.
“There has been a concept that cricket should be left to people with managerial skills. I believe strongly the involvement of cricketers is necessary.
“It is my dream that West Indies recover and beat South Africa here and recover its glory. In the future, I see a South Africa that remains strong, competitive and contributing to the development of the game. I also see a strong West Indies, bringing its particular genius to a part of the world.”

“I don’t think there is any cricketer who should strike for money now because they are well paid. We have to impart to our young people the importance of playing for your country. Money is a subsidiary of success.”Lloyd, who has had stints as an international match referee and as chairman of the ICC’s cricket committee, said that the ICC should be running the game and it was important for the governing body to work out a better system of revenue distribution for all countries. The revamp of the ICC last year, based on changes devised by the Indian, Australia and English boards, gave more influence to the three boards. Lloyd also stated that policies like the use of Decision Review System (DRS) should be unanimously followed.”I agree that the ICC must be stronger. It should be like the FIFA or the IOC [International Olympic Committee] – very strong in the things they do. FIFA said when you kick the ball back to the goalkeeper he has got to kick it out. I don’t see Italy and England and France saying we are not playing. We have one team playing without DRS. If we have something it has got to be globally done. Everybody has got to work together.”We can’t have three countries ruling cricket. It can’t be done. It comes back to money. I hope one day everything will come back to normal. I think the ICC should be running cricket. They should say to the highest bidder, television company to send out a tender – saying we want 5 million for so many Test matches for the next couple of years. That money should be distributed either on rankings or equally. That money can be used to run cricket properly. Players can be paid better. If we are saying Test cricket is the highest cricket you can play, you should be paid better. We all have to sit down and work out a better system for all countries.”Lloyd gave the example of West Indies, who could benefit from the distribution of TV revenues: “Where West Indies is concerned, we have a special case. We have to fly everywhere. We can’t drive anywhere. you can’t go by boat either. It’s expensive for West Indies to hold Test series. It’s in high season and we have to compete with that. We can’t fill the stadium. We don’t have the amount of people to do so. Television would help us out in that respect. We would just play cricket and we wouldn’t have any wranglings. We have a system.”Lloyd said that the establishment of a national cricket fund, to aid retired cricketers, is imperative and the fund could be built through proceeds from one game of a Test series, or a percentage of television deals.”In spite of the big contracts a few of our players receive for various T20 tournaments, we must recognise that these are only a few players and it is imperative that a national cricket fund be established,” he said. “We should play a game in every Test series and those proceeds should go to a fund for retired cricketers. When we have television deals, a percentage of that should go to the fund. There are quite a few people who played for their country and I think they should have some remuneration.”

Rams clinch Super-Over thriller

Group B

Yasim Murtaza was named Man of the Match for his 34-ball 64 against Karachi Zebras•PCB

Rawalpindi Rams moved up to the top of Group B after winning the one-over eliminator against Karachi Zebras at the National Stadium. A thrilling game of fluctuating fortunes, which produced nearly 400 runs, three half-centuries and 18 sixes, came to an end with Rams needing 10 from the Super Over.Zebras left-arm fast bowler Rumman Raees was handed the task of defending those runs, but his decision to open with two full-length deliveries backfired, as Rams opener Awais Zia drove the first ball over gully for four, and tucked the second away to the leg side for two more crucial runs. Zia then cut to third man for a single to give the strike to Yasim Murtaza. With three needed off three balls, Murtaza defended a full toss away to the leg side for another single. However, Raees’ attempt at a run-out missed the stumps and Rams duly obliged by collecting an extra run from the overthrow. Murtaza could not connect with the penultimate ball, but with just one needed, he and Zia ran a bye to complete the victory.Rams, though, may have felt the match should not even have come down to a Super Over. Defending 195, they had reduced Zebras to 89 for 5 after Hammad Azam (3 for 22) wrecked the hosts’ middle order. However, a flurry of big hits from Mohammad Waqas and Sohail Khan brought Zebras back into the game. The pair added 55 off 22 balls, but with 52 needed from the last five overs, Waqas was crucially dismissed for a 37-ball 73, having whacked four fours and six sixes. His wicket thwarted Zebras’ momentum, and eventually brought the equation to 12 off the last over. Facing the seamer Nasir Malik, Sohail and his partner at the other end, Raees, could only scamper around for singles, meaning Zebras needed seven off the last two balls. The penultimate delivery was a dot ball, but Sohail hit the final ball for six to tie the game. Sohail ended with 45 off 27 balls, with one four and four sixes.Rams, opting to bat, had earlier made 195 for 4 from their 20 overs. Their innings was built around a 107-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Murtaza (64) and Umar Amin (50*), which helped them recover from the early loss of Naved Malik in the second ball of the game. While Murtaza was named Man of the Match, Sohail Tanvir also made a crucial contribution towards his team’s win.Bowling the penultimate over of the game, Tanvir conceded just five runs, making the situation that much more difficult for Zebras. He followed up this incisive bowling even in the Super Over by producing two vital dot balls, which was ultimately the difference between the two sides.

Group A

Sialkot Stallions strolled to their third straight win of the competition, after they thumped Quetta Bears by 44 runs in Karachi.Having been inserted, the Stallions openers Mukhtar Ahmed (32) and Mansoor Amjad (22) began brightly by racing to 50 in 5.4 overs. Mukhtar and Mansoor fell within three overs of each other, briefly thwarting Stallions’ momentum, but Haris Sohail and Ali Khan counterattacked by adding 79 for the fourth wicket from just 39 deliveries.Ali Khan, whose 19-ball 48 powered Stallions’ chase against Larkana Bulls on Friday, blitzed 44 off 23 balls with one four and four sixes. He was dismissed off the last ball of the innings, but Haris remained unbeaten on 52, as Stallions finished with 171 for 4.Bears never really got going in their chase, and slumped to 84 for 7 inside 14 overs. Zubair Ahmed and Taimur Khan both made starts, but fell in the thirties. Nazar Hussain hit 29 off 25 at No. 9 but by then it was too late and Bears could muster only 127 for 7 from their 20 overs. Mukhtar capped off a fine all-round display by claiming 3 for 16 to win the Man-of-the-Match award.Karachi Dolphins also maintained their winning start to the season, as their opener Rameez Raja blasted an unbeaten 70 off just 49 deliveries to drive his team to a nine-wicket victory against Hyderabad Hawks. Dolphins and Stallions are now level on top of Group A with six points each, but Dolphins’ superior net run-rate means they are rooted firmly in first place.Hawks, choosing to bat, could not gather any momentum in their innings as they lost wickets right from the off. While several of their middle-order batsmen made starts, none could produce a fifty, as tight bowling from Dolphins restricted Hawks to just 119 for 8. The seamers Anwar Ali and Abdul Ameer both took two wickets and went at under five an over, while Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s new T20 captain, chipped in with the dismissal of Faisal Athar.Dolphins lost Shahzaib Hasan for 10 in the sixth over, but they were hardly threatened chasing a paltry total. Rameez and Asad Shafiq put up an unbroken stand of 81 from just 67 balls, as Dolphins were home with almost four overs to spare. Rameez slammed 10 fours and a six during his knock, while Shafiq remained unbeaten on 38, with three fours.

Ganguly elected CAB joint secretary

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been elected joint secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) while Jagmohan Dalmiya was re-elected unopposed as the association’s president

PTI27-Jul-2014Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been elected joint secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) while Jagmohan Dalmiya was re-elected unopposed as the association’s president for yet another term.”I think it’s a very good development as when I was the BCCI president, he was the captain (of Indian cricket team). As a team we’ve worked very well. I feel this team will work again,” Dalmiya told reporters after the CAB’s 83rd Annual General Meeting in Kolkata. At the time of the AGM, when Ganguly was being elected joint-secretary in absentia succeeding Sujan Mukherjee, the cricketer-turned-commentator was seen handing over the Test cap to debutant fast bowler Pankaj Singh in Southampton. To many insiders it was ‘unprecedented’ in CAB’s history that a joint secretary was not part of the annual meeting. Dalmiya said Ganguly would do justice to his new role as a cricket administrator.”He has told us that he would be able to devote time (to CAB). Be it cricket captaincy or work related to administration he has done exceedingly well in the past. We’re hopeful he would manage well,” Dalmiya said.Ganguly succeeded Mukherjee, whose four-year term got over this month and his club Barisha Sporting was represented by his maternal uncle and club president Arup Chatterjee. It remains to be seen how Ganguly would manage time as he had also forayed into football, co-owning the Kolkata franchise of the upcoming Indian Super League.Having held some key positions in various sub-committees like cricket development, this would be a full-time entry for the 42-year-old, who quit international cricket in November 2008.Asked what will happen to the Ganguly-chaired cricket development committee, Dalmiya said: “The committee has to be reformed now.” Ganguly is expected to take charge on August 1, after the completion of third Test.Besides Ganguly, there was another cricketer in Bengal captain Laxmi Shukla, who also stepped into administration representing Howrah Saikia Friends at the working committee. “I’ve seen the life on the field. Now it’s time to embrace a little bit of administration off it. I’ve a lot to learn,” Shukla said.Hailing Ganguly’s foray into cricket administration, Shukla said: “It’s really a very good move. Dada’s (Ganguly) entry into CAB as a joint-secretary will give Indian cricket a new voice.”As for Dalmiya, 74, it was just yet another term at the CAB where he has held the chair since 1993 except for a 19-month hiatus after he was unseated in December 2006 following his expulsion from the BCCI on embezzlement charges during the 1996 World Cup.The former ICC president, however, made a resounding comeback, beating Prasun Mukherjee in the 2008 elections.President: Jagmohan Dalmiya; Vice-presidents: Sankar Nath Bagchi, Samar Paul, Amiya Kumar Auddy and Sudip Biswas; Joint Secretaries: Subir Ganguly and Sourav Ganguly; Treasurer: Biswarup Dey

Buttler ton in vain as Malinga holds nerve

Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJos Buttler scored the fastest ODI century for England but fell short at Lord’s•PA Photos

Jos Buttler produced arguably England’s greatest one-day innings – his first ODI hundred, the fastest for the country and the fastest at Lord’s – but Sri Lanka clung on to level the series in a contest that became gripping during the latter stages of the chase.Buttler’s 61-ball century, eclipsing the 69-ball record of Kevin Pietersen at East London, brought England’s requirement down to 12 off the final over but Lasith Malinga held his nerve as Chris Jordan holed out and Buttler was run out for 121 off 74 with two balls of the innings remaining. He had come to the crease to join Ravi Bopara with England listing on 111 for 5 in the 29th over with the innings having included just four boundaries. They proceeded to add 133 in 16.2 overs to bring the equation down to 62 required off the last six when Bopara top edged a sweep off Ajantha Mendis. But Buttler responded by taking 20 off the next over – bowled by Nuwan Kulasekara – including two skimming sixes over extra cover. Jordan dug out singles and twos where he could, scampering manically between the wickets, although it was basically down to Buttler who reached his hundred with a brace off Mendis. The force was with England but a single to Buttler off the first ball of the final over ate up a priceless delivery, especially when no runs were scored as Jordan was dismissed next ball at long-on.It was a breathless finish to a match that was seemingly dribbing to a rather soporific conclusion. England needed to achieve their highest chase on home soil to seal the series after Sri Lanka posted 300 for 9 but for more than half the chase there was barely a whimper. They lurched to 10 for 2 against a supreme new-ball spell by Malinga and could never find the impetus to mount a challenge. At one point they went 130 deliveries without hitting a boundary before Buttler began his mission with a reverse sweep in the 31st over.It was a performance that added fuel to well-worn arguments that England do not possess the required top-order power when a large score – and 300 is no longer the gargantuan total it was – is either there to be chased down or needed to be set. At one point Alastair Cook could be seen with head in hands on the balcony. He perked up during Buttler’s onslaught, but his overriding emotion is likely to be one of frustration.Sri Lanka would have struggled to accept this match slipping away although some of their bowling and fielding slipped under pressure. But they ultimately claimed victory and for much of the game it was another display of their resilience. Conditions were markedly different from Old Trafford yet it was still another striking turnaround having been bowled out for 67 three days ago led by Kumar Sangakkara’s first hundred at Lord’s.Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan added 172 for the second wicket – Sri Lanka’s third best stand for that wicket in ODIs – to form the backbone of the total. Although England fought back in the final 10 overs, a final-ball boundary by Mendis enabled Sri Lanka to cross the psychological 300 marker: England had only ever chased down more than 300 twice in their ODI history.Sangakkara’s innings will not get him a spot on the honours board – that is reserved for Test hundreds – but it did tick off one of the missing milestones in an illustrious career. His previous best at Lord’s in any format was 65 and he needed 13 balls to get off the mark but then progressed silkily to his hundred off 95 deliveries. The first of his 14 boundaries, a hook against Chris Jordan, did not come until his 27th ball but it was the three in a row he took off Joe Root that really launched his innings. When he was stumped off James Tredwell in the 43rd over he left to a standing ovation.Sangakkara worked hard to find his timing before he clicked into gear with three consecutive boundaries off Root; twice using his feet to loft down the ground and then a peachy cover drive. Beautiful footwork also helped him beat mid-on off Tredwell and he latched on to loose deliveries from Ravi Bopara, who strayed on both sides of the wicket. The 10 overs combined of Bopara and Root cost 76 runs.Sangakkara and Dilshan joined forces after Kusal Perera, brought in as Sri Lanka shuffled their order, edged a wild mow to slip. Dilshan scratched around, reaching 13 off 29 deliveries, before scooping James Anderson and following that with another boundary to fine leg.Dilshan brought up his half-century the ball after Sangakkara but it always more of a battle for him. His last 21 runs soaked up 37 deliveries and he was also discomforted after a collision with Root in the bowler’s follow through. He fell in the first over of the batting Powerplay, attempting to scoop a full delivery from Anderson which took leg stump, and England regained a semblance of control. Mahela Jayawardene has been short of runs in this series and it was a scratchy innings from him. The final 10 overs brought 83 runs, fewer than Sri Lanka would have wanted.Malinga produced a wicked four-over spell, trapping Cook lbw with one that swung back in and was overturned by the DRS and then finding Ian Bell’s edge to slip. He did not concede a run until his 18th delivery and even then it was a squirted edge to third man.Root and Gary Ballance tried to rebuild but it was painful progress. After the first 10 overs England were 34 for 2 and there was precious little lifting of the run rate. Ballance struggled against the spin of the recalled Ajantha Mendis and Sachithra Senanayake before edging a reverse sweep which summed up the innings which used 69 deliveries. Root had only faced one ball fewer when he top edged to fine leg.England put great stock in the ability of their middle order but the asking rate was approaching eight when Eoin Morgan walked in and did not dip. Morgan could not find the boundary in 16 balls and was then stumped. The game appeared up. It wasn’t. What followed was epic and will give England much food for thought. For Sri Lanka there was just relief.

No excuses for Sri Lanka – Malinga

A spot in the semi-finals of the World T20 could well be heavily weighted on the toss of a coin when Sri Lanka take on New Zealand for one remaining spot in Group 1

Sa'adi Thawfeeq30-Mar-2014A spot in the semi-finals of the World T20 could well be heavily weighted on the toss of a coin when Sri Lanka take on New Zealand for one remaining spot in Group 1, but stand-in captain Lasith Malinga will refuse to use a wet ball and damp outfield as an excuse and believes his side are better prepared after coming unstuck against England.Sri Lanka could not defend 189 as Alex Hales clubbed an unbeaten 116, the expensive performance of Ajantha Mendis, who conceded 52 off his four overs, proving especially telling and the spinner may pay the price for the crunch game. Malinga was also less effective than is so often the case, going wicketless and at almost eight an over during his four overs.”When we play night games we must know to use those conditions. We can’t give excuses against a wet ball and things like that. That’s my feeling as a bowler,” he said. “In the bowling sometimes we are on top but in the last few overs against England we didn’t do very well.””Now it’s in the past and we are looking forward to the next match. We had a good training session yesterday and today and we know how to adjust to situations like dew and when the ball becomes slippery. We are all prepared.”Malinga, the team’s T20 vice-captain since October 2012, said that he was under no extra pressure leading his country for the first time even though so much was at stake. He has been forced into this position after Dinesh Chandimal was suspended for one match for his team being penalised twice for slow over rate within a 12-month period.”It’s a good feeling to captain my country for the first time. I really like to get challenged in my bowling or in my career,” he said. “This is a good opportunity for me. The other thing this is it is a crucial game and I am not thinking too much about the captaincy but to just to give 100% and win the match tomorrow.”I have a lot of good support from some experienced T20 captains in the side like Mahela, Kumar , Dilshan and Angelo . As captain I want every single player to prove his skills in tomorrow’s game.”Sri Lanka and New Zealand have met each other on 12 occasions and are tied at five wins apiece, with Sri Lanka having won the last two meetings. The teams also have the experience of a Super Over when the World T20 match at Pallekele in 2012 ended in a tie.”We have no choice but to win the match if we want to get qualified for the semi-finals. However, as a team, we’re in very good shape, I mean mentally. If you look at the last few games that we played, we’ve played well to win them,” Malinga said.”In our recent tournaments, we’ve always won the crucial match and came into the finals. We handled that pressure well. With England playing Netherlands in the first match of the day, Malinga said that his team will follow closely that game to see how the pitch behaves before deciding on their final eleven. Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne is expected to replace Chandimal, but the bowling remains unclear with either Rangana Herath or Seekkhuge Prasanna in line to replace the struggling Mendis.
