Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has given Neil Lennon a big headache

For Celtic, they have somehow managed to get their season back on track.

Only a few weeks ago their supporters had gathered outside Parkhead in protest against Neil Lennon and the club’s ownership but the Northern Irishman has turned things around.

Celtic have now won five games on the trot which included an impressive win over Lille and also victory in the Scottish Cup final. Of course, the Hoops are still considerably off the pace in the league but it’s encouraging that they’ve been able to change their fortunes in such a short space of time.

One of the reasons they’ve been able to do that is the renewed fitness of Leigh Griffiths. A man with “unquestioned” talent according to Chris Sutton, Lennon hasn’t always been able to call on the striker.

He started just ten times in the SPFL last season and this term, the forward has only managed two league starts. However, possessing 121 goals for his club, it’s clear he has the necessary qualities.

His instinctive finish against Hearts in the Scottish Cup final summed up the attributes he possesses and then he took his start against Hamilton with both hands.

Griffiths found the back of the net but did endure a mixed afternoon on Boxing Day. He lost 66.7% of his duels and could have had a hat-trick but it was promising that he got in such good areas.

It was a display that has provided Lennon with a huge problem, albeit a welcome one in the final third.

Odsonne Edouard hasn’t been his usual self this term but after being involved in all three goals last time out, it was a welcome return to form. Yet, his goal-scoring performance came from the left-wing as Griffiths played through the middle.

The dilemma, therefore, is whether to keep Edouard in a new position and stick with Griffiths or put the Frenchman back in his preferred role. Considering the Bhoys beat Hamilton 3-0, making changes would be foolish.

Yet, he has to consider the impact Mo Elyounoussi can make. Having contributed to 17 goals this campaign, it’s incredibly difficult to leave him out too.

Lennon has a lot of thinking to do ahead of the New Year.

AND in other news, Celtic must swoop for “extraordinary” colossus, he’s better than Barkas…

Ross Wilson can land Joe Aribo deputy in boyhood Rangers fan Kenny McLean

Glasgow Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has hardly put a foot wrong since he first arrived at the Ibrox outfit from Premier League side Southampton. Now he has a chance to give a lifelong fan a dream chance to play for Steven Gerrard’s side if recent reports are to be believed.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Rangers are considering a shock move for Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean in January.

It’s claimed that Gerrard is closely monitoring the situation as he is well aware that McLean has been in and out of the Canaries first team since they were relegated from the Premier League.

The Ibrox boss is believed to be eyeing a swoop for the Scotland hero in the winter transfer window after he helped Steve Clarke’s side secure their spot for the Euro 2020 Championships next summer by scoring his penalties in the play-off shootout victories over both Israel and Serbia.

Rangers are reportedly lining up either a deal to be paid in instalments or an initial loan deal with the option to buy in the summer. However, McLean signed a new contract with the Canaries only a couple of months ago, which ties him down at Carrow Road until 2023.

Wilson’s time to shine

This is Wilson’s time to shine as he notoriously drives a hard bargain, having developed a reputation for being the key figure in the club’s recruitment during his time at St Mary’s. He oversaw the arrival of former Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk before selling him to Liverpool for a huge profit.

McLean has scored one goal in eight games in the Championship so far this season, despite the fact he has only started four of those games. The Scottish international may decide a change of scenery is in his best interests with the Euros just around the corner.

With the 28-year-old potentially looking to leave Carrow Road and with Norwich feeling the impact as a result of these unprecedented circumstances, the Canaries may have to cash in on the Scotsman sooner rather than later.

McLean, whose market value is estimated at £2.88m via Transfermarkt, has made 72 appearances for Norwich, scoring five goals and supplying eight assists in all competitions so far.

Once hailed as an “irreplaceable” dynamo by Norwich boss Daniel Farke, the former Aberdeen and St Mirren man should be able to hit the ground running. He also has experience of playing in the Europa League qualifying rounds, which is surely an added bonus.

The centre-midfielder, who can also be deployed as an attacking midfielder or out wide, could be the perfect deputy for Rangers star Joe Aribo, who himself has become a versatile option under Gerrard, having replaced Ianis Hagi on the right-wing in recent weeks before the international break.

However, the Gers are hardly short of options in the midfield, as Gerrard can call upon the likes of Steven Davis, Bongani Zungu, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield as well. However, Arfield isn’t getting any younger, whilst it remains to be seen if Davis will be offered a new deal or not, as his current contract will run out in 2021.

Wilson may feel that he will be able to negotiate a cut-price deal with the Canaries for McLean in the coming months as the Euros loom ever nearer, with the Scotsman keen to add to his 16 caps for his country so far.

Newcastle United: Craig Hope reveals how many fans may be allowed in St. James’ Park by October

Craig Hope has revealed how many Newcastle United fans may be allowed in St. James’ Park by the start of October in his latest piece for the Daily Mail.

According to the journalist, it is hoped that significantly more than a third of the 52,000 capacity will be allowed back into the stadium once it is given the approval of the Premier League.

The Tyneside club have also sounded out corporate box holders about returning to the ground on October 3rd, with other teams from the top flight becoming more and more confident that supporters will be allowed back into their stadiums from next month.

Those private boxes will be allowed a capacity of 50 per cent in each room which have been used to house media since the beautiful game returned after being locked down due to the global pandemic outbreak.

The season-ticket holders in the North East may also be put on long-term payment plans in the wider picture to try and get as many fans back in St. James’ park as possible for the new 2020/21 term.

This should come as good news to those members of the Toon Army who are desperate to get back into the stadium to watch their team play and go back to some sort of normality.

Of course, the safety of the NUFC fans remains the top priority, but it will surely come as a much welcomed relief that the supporters may be allowed back into the ground in just over a month’s time.

Five realistic signings Leeds United should target this summer

After 16 long years, Leeds United have finally returned to the Premier League.

Under Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa, the club managed to win the Championship last season and booked their place in next seasons Premier League campaign. With the transfer window currently open, the club have found themselves trying to strengthen their squad ahead of the start of the new season on September 4th – and haven’t let the current financial struggles from COVID-19 keep them from doing so.

The club have found themselves linked with an abundance of players over the past few weeks, as well as already signing Jack Harrison on a further season-long loan, Illan Mesiler on a permanent transfer after spending last season on loan at the club, and 18-year-old Joe Gelhardt.

With the transfer rumours flying around as they usually do, players and clubs will be linked with each other from all over the world – but who would be the most realistic signings for Leeds this window?

Sergio Romero

Despite the permanent signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier – who had a fantastic end to last season with Leeds due to No.1 choice Kiko Casilla being banned for eight matches after racially abusing Charlton forward Jonathan Leko – with the Spaniard likely to leave the club this summer.

This departure means Leeds will be left with one experienced goalkeeper in Meslier, and the club have recently been linked with a move for Manchester United’s number 2 Sergio Romero.

The Argentinian has reportedly been looking for first-team football and Leeds have been linked with a move with manager and fellow countryman Bielsa a keen admirer of the shot-stopper, and he has a fantastic record in the games he’s played for United. Romero has 39 clean sheets in 61 appearances for the Red Devils and would be a welcome addition to Bielsa’s squad.

Emiliano Buendia

Another Argentinian that Bielsa could swoon over to Elland Road this summer is Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia. After the Canaries were relegated last season, they have found themselves in a position that will likely see them sell some of their best performers from last year’s campaign – with one of those being Buendia.

The 23-year-old finished the season with the most assists for Norwich with 7, as well as six MOTM awards after 36 league games.

The winger has a current market value of £13.05 million, and Norwich have reportedly valued him at around £20 million, a price that Leeds have said they are happy to meet, with Norwich also giving permission for the player to leave (via TEAMtalk).

Marcos Senesi

It appears to be an Argentinian overload, but that’s what happens when you have one of the best Argentinian managers of all time in charge. The club have been linked with a move for Feyenoord centre-back Marcos Senesi, who joined the Dutch club in September last year.

His stats for last season are impressive too, with the 23-year-old averaging 2.4 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 2.1 aerial duels won, and 3.6 clearances from his 16 games in the Eredivisie, as well as averaging a 7.07 WhoScored match rating in that time – and with a market value of just over £12 million, he could be a great move for Leeds this summer, with the on-loan Ben White now returning to his parent club Brighton, who will likely want to keep hold of him this season.

Saïd Benrahma

Soccer Football – Championship – Brentford v Wigan Athletic – Griffin Park, London, Britain – July 4, 2020 Brentford’s Said Benrahma celebrates scoring their second goal, as play resumes behind closed doors following the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Action Images/Peter Cziborra EDITORIAL USE ONLY. With Brentford narrowly missing out on the Premier League after their 2-1 defeat to Fulham in the Championship play-off final, the Bees will likely see the departure of their best players, including Algerian winger Saïd Benrahma.

Leeds are reportedly hopeful of a £20 million deal for the 26-year-old despite interest from West Ham and Aston Villa, who enjoyed a fantastic season last year scoring 17 goals with 9 assists from a number of positions, highlighting his versatility.

The player would of bee disappointed to miss out on the Premier League with Brentford, and the prospect of that with Leeds may prove enough for them to persuade Benrahma to sign.

Ollie Watkins

Another Brentford starlet who will be desperate for Premier League football – Ollie Watkins enjoyed a sensational season for the Bees. After 49 Championship games, the 24-year-old finished the season with a fantastic 26 goals and has attracted the attention of many clubs in England.

Leeds are reportedly favourites to sign the striker, and could acquire his services for a cool £18 million thanks to a clause in his contract that was activated after the club failed to achieve promotion to the Premier League (via LeedsLive).

If Watkins were to join the club, he could strike up a great partnership with current No.9 Patrick Bamford, who himself has a keen eye for goal.

David Moyes must unleash Grady Diangana at West Ham next season

West Ham boss David Moyes could be sleepwalking into a transfer disaster this summer if fresh reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Hammers have pulled a U-turn on their young winger Grady Diangana and are now prepared to sell him if they receive an offer of £25m.

They claim that Moyes had been reluctant to let the 22-year-old leave the London Stadium before next season after his impressive loan spell at promotion-winning West Brom.

Now the club would like to move him on in order to garner some extra funds to use in the transfer market.

Moyes mistake

With the likes of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko also on the chopping block this summer, it would be a strange move to get rid of Diangana too.

This really could be one of Moyes’ biggest mistakes at the Irons.

The enigmatic winger provided eight goals and six assists as the Baggies clinched the runner-up spot in the Championship this term – he only started 23 matches, which makes it all that more spectacular. Diangana also averaged 2.4 dribbles, 1.6 shots and 1.4 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

Only one Hammers star (Michail Antonio) scored more goals than the 22-year-old whilst no other player managed to match his assists for the season.

Diangana’s performances at the Hawthorns haven’t gone unnoticed either, Lee Hendrie believes he has set himself up “to be an absolutely fabulous player” and a “total nightmare” for defenders whilst EFL pundit Keith Andrews has described the wide man as “explosive”.

West Ham are better off having him around next season. He’s hungry to be a success and will be on less than half the money that the majority of the squad – flops included – are on.

It’s no wonder SPFL giants Celtic and Rangers are hot on his tail. They’d both make Moyes rue this blunder.

AND in other news, Hammers hope to use Moyes flop as makeweight for £20m star…

Charlton: Fans speculate over takeover news following Marian Mihail Q&A

Charlton Athletic are currently in a grey area as a potential takeover continues to spark questions from fans.

Current owners East Street Investments (ESI) could be about to lose control of the club as takeover rumours swirl. A recent statement posted by Charlton revealed that the board had been made aware of a ‘change of ownership’.

ESI bought the club in January from Roland Duchatelet but a turbulent relationship could now see Tahnoon Nimer and co usurped from their position at the hilt. Interest from former Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins and a Portuguese business consortium are among the parties taken into consideration for sale.

Charlton director Marian Mihail has answered questions from fans and has stated that, despite the interest shown in the purchase of the club, the identity of the buyer has not been revealed.

A lot of Addicks fans are becoming impatient with the up-and-down news, with many taking to Twitter to express their frustration. One supporter has responded to the Q&A post saying it’s ‘absolutely pointless’ as talks remain vague.

Another fan has said ‘all roads point to Jenkins’, who recently said he wanted a chance to prove he can ‘prosper’ again in charge of a club (via Wales Online).
