Man Utd fans discuss Pogba’s hilarious dig at Phil Jones

After joining from Blackburn Rovers all those years ago, Phil Jones has really struggled to live up to the hype that surrounded his early rise at Ewood Park.

This was a player who enjoyed a superb debut coming up against then Chelsea striker Didier Drogba back in 2010, and Manchester United no doubt thought they were getting someone to really build their team around.

Instead, form and fitness have completely deserted him, and he’s made just 224 appearances in total, in almost a decade worth of time at Old Trafford.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier Legue records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And now, his teammates are ribbing him too. In a Q&A session wih SPORTbible (via The Metro), Paul Pogba trolled Jones by claiming that the centre-back is the most likely player to score a bizarre own-goal.

After hearing the Frenchman’s dig, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on what the midfielder had to say.

A couple of fans however seemed rather unimpressed with what Pogba had to say, with one supporter calling him “very unprofessional” and another raising his eyebrows at why the Frenchman felt the need to answer the question in the first place.

Pogba and United fans may not have the most strongest of relationships, but this is clearly one of those times where they’re in agreement.

The Frenchman’s hilarious dig at Jones was no doubt all in jest, and at a time like this, being able to laugh and smile is something we should all treasure.

Jones may be the only one not seeing the funny side of it.

Meanwhile, Man Utd would be making a foolish mistake by snubbing this star.

Sheffield United forward Billy Sharp still attracting interest

Journalist Richard Sutcliffe has claimed there is still “considerable interest” in Billy Sharp ahead of the window closing on the 31st January.

What’s he said?

Sharp has been under the microscope this month but it still isn’t entirely clear whether he’ll be leaving Bramall Lane.

The Sheffield United forward has most publically taken the interest of Leeds who are in search for a new striker this January.

Sunderland are another side to have considered the possibility of bringing him to the club on loan but it’s apparent that the 33-year-old wants to stay with the Blades.

In a Q&A on The Athletic, one fan asked Sutcliffe if Sharp could still go to Leeds. His response was the following:

“Chris Wilder wants to keep him but he also says the decision has to be Billy’s. There is considerable interest in him from the Championship but starting tonight may just make Billy even more determined to stay.”

Sharp hanging around

Wilder handed just a second Premier League start of the season to Sharp on Tuesday evening, indicating that he’s more than happy to give him an opportunity when the chance presents itself.

The fact it came against Manchester City should also be of huge encouragement for the rest of the campaign, particularly if he has desires of staying and fighting for his place.

Before the Blades’ encounter with Arsenal last week, Wilder claimed that he’d had another talk with the striker about interest in him. However, the decision ultimately lies at the feet of Sharp in terms of leaving.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

Following his appearance in midweek, the chances of moving elsewhere surely drop off. After all, the only reason he’d really have to leave his boyhood club would be because of a lack of football.

That being said, Sharp was substituted just before the hour mark after having little impact on the game.

Although his attitude is admirable, he failed to register a single shot. The opposition was Man City, however, so an element of slack can be afforded when assessing his performance.

Sharp’s fitness might not be what it was, but after featuring against such superior opposition, there is definitely hope for his future in red and white.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United made an offer for a former World Cup winner this month…

‘End this nonsense’ – Newcastle fans react to reports of crowd-funded takeover bid

[ad_pod ]

Peter Kenyon is desperately searching for investors to help with his bid to buy Newcastle United, according to The Sun.

And that has not caught fans by surprise, with the Magpies faithful growing used to a media circus surrounding the club.

The report claims that Kenyon, previously a chief executive at Chelsea and Manchester United, is attempting to “crowd-fund” his bid to purchase the club.

Kenyon has reportedly offered Ashley the minimum buy-in of £1million, leaving him £299m short of the £300m needed to complete his purchase.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

Ashley, however, has told Kenyon that he is happy to be paid in instalments, which would be staggered over the course of 2019.

Ashley has repeatedly talked of selling the club and placed it up for sale in 2017, though he claimed that he would only allow a buyer to take control of the Magpies if they could take them to the “next level”.

Newcastle fans have reacted to the news with little surprise, as Kenyon bids to finally end Ashley’s reign.

James Milner injury update is fantastic news for Liverpool fans

Liverpool have made a strong start to the Premier League season and as it stands are living up to the hype as serious title-contenders under Jurgen Klopp.

At the moment, Liverpool still remain unbeaten in the league this year and the club’s brilliant start to the season will have only pleased the fans who will be hoping that they can finally bring a Premier League title to Anfield.

They have, however, suffered a slight hiccup in form recently as they were beaten by Chelsea – who also held them to a draw in the league – in the EFL Cup and Napoli in the Champions League while also being held to a draw by City before the international break. During the Man City game, James Milner was forced off with an apparent hamstring problem but according to reports, the midfielder is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

The Breakdown

The report states that he could be back in full training by this Thursday which could put him in contention for a place in the side for Saturday’s game against Huddersfield.

The 32-year-old has been superb so far this season and has played every game in the league this year.

The evergreen midfielder is arguably having his best season for the club and has been integral in their rise up the table. His experience, intelligence and energy in midfield has complimented perfectly with Wijnaldum in midfield and has provided some crucial balance to a side that likes to play at a high tempo. His early return is a huge plus for Klopp.

Liverpool fans, thoughts?

Mandzukic can turn Everton’s Champions League dream into a reality

Everton recently confirmed the signing of Richarlison from Watford and, while another winger could still be brought in, manager Marco Silva will now be looking to strengthen other areas of his squad.

That includes left-back and centre-back with the Toffees heavily linked with moves for Barcelona pair Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina (e.g. Sport).

However, Silva may also have his eyes on improving his centre-forward options.

Silva currently has Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to choose from when current first-choice striker Cenk Tosun is unavailable, and the Portuguese coach may feel that is not enough if Everton are to achieve their goals for the forthcoming season.

In the long run, the Toffees hope to eventually break into the Premier League elite and qualify for the Champions League. And if that is to become a reality, then more firepower is needed up front.

And the person to provide that is Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic, whose future at the Allianz Stadium may be in doubt.

£18m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Mandzukic was already facing tough competition from the brilliant Douglas Costa for a spot in Max Allegri’s starting XI, and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo will only make things more difficult for the Croatian.

Should that be the case and Mandzukic decides it is time to leave Turin, then Everton must lure him to Merseyside.

The Croatia international has been converted into a left winger by Allegri but, as he showed at the World Cup with his nation, he is still one of the most effective No.9s in the game right now.

Naturally, because of his change in position, at club level Mandzukic is not as prolific as he once was.

But the 32-year-old’s hold-up play is still world-class while he remains a dominant figure in the air and a hard worker when his side are not in possession of the ball.

If used as a centre-forward again, Mandzukic easily has at least two more double figure seasons in him, which is something Everton could definitely do with in their pursuit of Champions League football.

Scholes surprised by Man United arrival

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has admitted that he was shocked that Jose Mourinho managed to bring Nemanja Matic to Old Trafford in this summer’s transfer window.

Experienced midfielder Matic joined Man United from Chelsea at the end of last month, signing a three-year contract with the 20-time English champions.

The 29-year-old made his competitive debut for the Red Devils in Tuesday night’s UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid, and despite impressing, could not prevent his new team from suffering a 2-1 defeat.

Matic’s Chelsea departure came as a surprise to many after his impressive form last season, and Scholes has questioned why the Blues would be prepared to sell a key player to one of their title rivals.

Scholes told BT Sport:

“I really like the Matic signing. That was the one that surprised me a little bit. It made you wonder why did Chelsea sell him? I think he brings aggression to United’s midfield which is something I think they have been lacking.

“I think he’s very similar in a way to Michael Carrick in a controlling midfielder but what he brings and what Michael doesn’t bring is a little bit of aggression which, when he gets to the ball, he tackles, he allows other people to play.”

Matic could make his Premier League debut for Man United in Sunday’s clash with West Ham United at Old Trafford. The Serbian has helped Chelsea to two league titles in the last three seasons.

Both should be grateful as Mourinho and Rooney save each other’s reputations

This season represented quite an important juncture for both Wayne Rooney and Jose Mourinho as the pair were finally united at Old Trafford. After previously trying to bring one of the most talked about English footballers of all time to both Chelsea and Real Madrid over the course his career, the Portuguese was finally handed his man.

Years ago, the notion of seeing the pair work together would pretty much guarantee success in the Premier League, with two biggest icons of the modern footballing era in this country enjoying so much of it throughout the mid-2000s. Still, events in both of their careers had seen their previously sky-high stock drop rather dramatically.

Mourinho’s Chelsea debacle had seen doubts cast over his ability to keep up with the ever-changing world of football. Had the Real Madrid experience ruined him? At times last season, it looked like it had.

Having seemingly lost the dressing room at Stamford Bridge last year, the 54-year-old was looking increasingly sour and the cocky charm that made him such an interesting, larger-than-life, character when he first arrived on these shores over a decade ago had soured into a toxic venom he appeared to spit with every passing press-conference.

Rooney, meanwhile, has been a burden for both club and country over the past 18 months or so. His labouring performances for England and United, either in central midfield or more attacking berths, were so often discussed in almost every round-up of weekend action for what seemed like an age.

So this version of a man who once captured the hearts and the imaginations of the footballing world was far from the one Mourinho had been desperate to work with. However, despite the fact they’re unlikely to win a league title together, Rooney has helped Jose in a way few could have imagined.

Mourinho’s delicate handling of a situation that had dragged for over a year has gone some way into eradicating the fears he’d lost his touch with man management. There have been no public outbursts from the Rooney camp, even though he is quite clearly no longer a part of the first-team plans. Taking him out of the firing line, peppering the 31-year-old into the starting XI has afforded him some much-needed respite.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

It’s a set of circumstances that could have so easily turned into a saga of the sourest nature, as it had threatened to twice even during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign in charge at Old Trafford. Granted, the level of Rooney’s performances are entirely different to what they were back then, though a figure of such magnitude edging closer to a departure is a delicate situation nonetheless.

Where David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and even Roy Hodgson fed him to the lions as his powers were on the wane, Mourinho acted decisively and chose to remove him with little fuss. For a player not always universally loved by a support at a club where he’s enjoyed so much success with over the past 13 years, there now at least appears to be a reasonably good feeling towards him.

His figure, whether it be through his own actions or not, has loomed large over all but one of the previous managers to have worked with him. Identifying that, Mourinho’s entirely respectful praise of his skipper while dropping him has helped lift the club as a whole.

When he broke the club’s goalscoring record, his legendary strike against Stoke City did not come amid a torrent of abuse and a myriad of media questions about his ability to perform at the highest level. Instead, it can be celebrated for what it was – both a vitally important goal and a wonderful example of the technical ability he still has on the ball.

The closing stages of Rooney’s United career can now be enjoyed by all involved, rather than endured by those so quick to abuse him any chance they get. No longer a burden on a stuttering team, he is now afforded the grandeur of a star on the wane. For that, he should thank Mourinho.

But this works both ways, too. For helping to prove he hasn’t lost his way with managing players on a man-to-man basis, Jose should be thanking Rooney.

Man United should seriously consider this transfer in the summer

Whilst Manchester United remain far from a club in crisis at this particular stage in the season, the 2015/16 campaign hasn’t exactly proven much of an enjoyable affair for the Old Trafford faithful of late, despite the truckloads of cash that were spent on several over-sized transfer fees and inflated wage packets throughout the summer transfer window.

Although every football fan does love to witness high profile signings arrive at their club, the Red Devils arguably need re-evaluate their current stance before deciding which players are truly capable of improving Louis van Gaal’s side for the upcoming season.

So as Inter Milan’s Brazilian centre-back – Miranda – has subsequently seen his named linked with a possible switch to the Premier League this summer, could this latest foreign transfer target actually represent a rather shrewd acquisition for Manchester United to consider in the not too distant future, or would the Red Devils ultimately find themselves better served by looking elsewhere?

Even though Miranda isn’t quite the most sought after defensive name in the whole of world football at the moment, he is just the kind of player Louis van Gaal could utilize effectively down at Old Trafford in 2016/17 – should the enigmatic Dutchman still find himself in the job at Manchester United before the new league campaign eventually gets underway.

It doesn’t take much to notice the sheer shortage of defensive quality on offer among the Red Devils ranks across the modern era, even if LVG’s side have managed to keep things tight at the back for large portions of the current season. Although both Michael Carrick and Daley Blind have performed admirably for their side of late, neither player ultimately represents a natural centre-back at the end of the day, which is something that could easily be exploited against some of Europe’s more dangerous opposition at some stage down the line.

Miranda himself contributed greatly to Atletico Madrid’s title winning campaign just a few short seasons ago in the Spanish La Liga, arguably defining himself as one of the most significant – yet albeit understated – names on Diego Simeone’s team sheet during his successful spell at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The Brazilian international, whose defensive ability was sorely missed by his nation throughout the 2014 World Cup two summers ago, subsequently sealed a switch to Inter Milan before the start of the 2015/16 campaign – and although the 31-year-old hasn’t made his presence felt at the San Siro for long – Manchester United are ready to make their move sooner rather than later.

Miranda is usually very composed when bringing the ball out calmly from the back, his ability to read the game effectively has drawn a great deal of praise in recent seasons, and his prowess in the tackle also deserves a fair amount of credit.

Yes, the Old Trafford faithful would probably rather witness their club sign someone of the ilk of Thiago Silva, Raphael Varane or even Mats Hummels before the close of the upcoming summer transfer window, but as the Red Devils have no guarantee of Champions League football on the table right in the here and now, maybe the Manchester United boardroom staff will be unable to employ such an ambitious approach this time around.

The name ‘Miranda’ may indeed fail to sell many shirts down at Old Trafford should the South American defender eventually join up with the Red Devils sooner rather than later – yet as Louis van Gaal’s side certainly need a little defensive strengthening before the start of the 2016/17 campaign – this is one player who Manchester United fans shouldn’t be turning their noses up at any time soon.
