Manchester United: Fans delighted by Paul Pogba’s transfer update amid interest from Real Madrid

Manchester United star Paul Pogba wants to stay at Old Trafford amid interest from Real Madrid and Juventus, reports say.

According to Sky Sports, as per @utdreport, Pogba is happy at the Theatre of Dreams and is waiting for the club to open discussions with Mino Raiola when the Europa League campaign is concluded.

Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident the club can convince the 69-cap France international to sign a new deal. His contract is set to run out in 2021, although the Red Devils retain the option to extend the deal by another year.

While Juve, his former club, and Zinedine Zidane’s side have both been keeping tabs on the French midfielder, it looks like they will have to look elsewhere instead.

It is understood that all parties want to sort out a deal, while Ed Woodward will hold talks with Raiola to reach an agreement. He was widely expected to leave this summer after his controversial agent fuelled the fire in February, but relations between Raiola and the board are believed to have thawed dramatically.

Pogba has formed a promising partnership with Bruno Fernandes in the midfield, which has reportedly played a part in changing his mind.

Unsurprisingly, many United fans are delighted by the “fantastic” transfer update on the “maestro”, with one supporter having “tears in my eyes.” Indeed he is a vital player for the club, who has netted 32 goals and provided 33 assists in 163 appearances to date.

Tottenham criticised on Twitter by ex-Love Island star Alex George

2018 Love Island star Dr Alex George has become the latest person to lambaste Tottenham Hotspur on Twitter following their decision to place their 550 non-playing staff onto the Government’s furlough scheme, saying they “should be ashamed of themselves”.

Spurs and key figures like Daniel Levy, Harry Kane, Jose Mourinho and Hugo Lloris have come under serious fire from journalists and talkSPORT pundits following the announcement on Tuesday, which will see those employees of the north London outfit earn 80% of their wages for April and May.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Meanwhile, recent financial reports for last year have disclosed that chairman Levy earnt a £3m bonus on top of his £4m salary, while the club was also voted as the eighth richest in the world in the 2020 version of Deloitte’s football rich list.

As things stand, it appears as though the players are going to continue to be paid their full salaries, too.

Dr Alex was unlucky in love during his time on the 2018 version of Love Island, but he is on the frontline now given the current situation we are encountering in the United Kingdom right now.

In the circumstances, he has every right to be unhappy that Tottenham are taking advantage of a scheme designed to help those in need.

Liverpool fans react to Mohamed Salah’s performance against RB Salzburg

It took a while, but Liverpool finally got the job done against RB Salzburg.

During the first half, it looked like they could be in trouble. The Austrian team took the game to the European champions, with them having six shots on target during the first half. After the break, though, the Reds looked far more in control, and once Naby Keita scored the opener, there was only ever going to be one winner. Now, Jurgen Klopp’s men can look forward to the next round.

Mohamed Salah was the other man on the scoresheet in this 2-0 victory, but he could have had an awful lot more. During the 90 minutes, he had no less than nine shots at goal, and he missed some truly fantastic chances.

It is fair to say the fans weren’t at all happy with his finishing.

There were some horrific misses from the 67-time Egypt international. In all fairness, considering he has 82 goals in 125 games for the club, this was more an anomaly rather than the rule, but the former Borussia Dortmund manager will be hoping that it is the last time the 27-year-old is so wasteful in front of goal.

He did show that he knows where the target is during this match with the goal he grabbed. It was fantastically taken, with the former AS Roma man scoring from what looked like an impossible angle.

There was plenty of praise for the way he put that chance away.

It just goes to show that perseverance pays off.

Real Reds will get full marks: Take the ultimate Liverpool quiz below…

Still, not everyone was satisfied despite him effectively putting the game to bed with his goal.

His track record speaks for itself. He has won the Premier League’s Golden Boot in each of the last two seasons, and that goal tally previously mentioned is stunning. He may not be playing at his peak, but he still has 11 goals and six assists in 21 matches this campaign. Many players would kill for that kind of record.

Still, this week, Klopp may give his star winger some extra finishing exercises at Melwood.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to this incredible Salah stat.

Man Utd fans have savage response after Marcos Rojo ruled out with latest injury

Well that was expected wasn’t it? Just when you thought Marcos Rojo was beginning to finally kick on with his Manchester United career, the defender has been struck down with yet another injury.

As per Transfermarkt, the Argentina international has been out of action with 11 separate injuries since joining the club from Sporting CP back in 2014 for a fee in the region of £16m. All in all, it has meant he has missed a total of 93 games for the Red Devils.

This season has seen him feature slightly more prominently, particularly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to move to a back-three in recent games. He has played nine times across all competitions, and played the full 90 minutes in the Premier League draw against Liverpool and the Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea.

But speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon, Solskjaer revealed that Rojo is set to miss the next “couple of weeks” with a muscle problem.

After hearing the injury update on the 29-year-old, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their frustrations with the situation.

Many Red Devils supporters insisted it is quite simply typical that Rojo has once again gotten injured, while some appeared to be quite ruthless in suggesting his latest injury should be the final straw in considering whether to keep him or not.

Man Utd now miles behind rivals Manchester City, according to Nigel de Jong

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on beIN Sports (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News), former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has suggested his old club is now “miles ahead” of Manchester United.

What did he say?

The Red Devils’ last Premier League title triumph remains the campaign in which Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, with City going on to dominate domestic football ever since. Pep Guardiola’s men have on won back-to-back occasions in the last two seasons, and are looking for the hat-trick this year.

And, according to De Jong, whilst United’s historic profile means they are still a huge club, City have simply over-taken their rivals in most aspects since the departure of Ferguson.

He said: “I think Man City are miles away now. I’m not talking about how big the club is and how it compares to United in the world but if you talk about structure wise, player wise, philosophy wise, I think they are miles ahead.

“I think it all comes down to the fact that since Fergie left, there has been a big gap and people realise how important he was for this club. I think City just took the opportunity and took not just one step but two steps, three steps ahead of them. And it’s still going. As long as United can’t replace things and get any better, City will just go on and move away from them. It’s the same thing with Liverpool.”

Bitter truth

De Jong was known for his crunching, no-nonsense tackles in his playing days (who could forget that karate kick against Xabi Alonso in 2010), and unfortunately for United fans, his similarly brutal verdict on the club’s plight is also hard-hitting. The Red Devils have fallen into a mire since Ferguson’s exit, and the chopping and changing of both managers and players has certainly not helped at all.

Meanwhile at the Etihad, the likes of Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola have simply made the team better year-on-year, whilst there appears to be a long-term philosophy in place. The permanent appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford earlier this calendar year perhaps finally represents a sign that the club’s hierarchy have a vision for the future. Whilst City may be “miles ahead” now as De Jong suggests, United will be intent on reducing the distance as soon as possible.

Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois might finally be showing his true colours

Real Madrid recorded a vital 1-0 victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday night.

Was it pretty? Not particularly, no. But even a 1-0 victory is better than no victory at all.

For significant periods, Real Madrid were looking shaky and uncomfortable on the Turkish pitch as their hosts had them pinned down and were creating numerous chances on the night.

Luckily for them, they had Thibaut Courtois between the sticks.

And yes, this is definitely not something many Madridistas are used to hearing but the big Belgian goalie really did save their skin more than just once.

The 27-year-old has been a highly criticised figure at the club ever since he started producing sub-par performances week in, week out while donning the royal white of the Galacticos.

In fact, many of the fans were calling for Zidane to actually drop him before the clash and lo and behold, he ended up becoming the hero of the day.

Not only did Courtois finally tally a clean sheet in an important Champions League game but he also made three saves against Galatasaray, and with all three coming from inside the box too.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

When we compare that to his usual 1.1 saves per game in La Liga so far in the ongoing campaign, it really does put things into perspective.

Could this display actually mean that Courtois is slowly but surely getting back to his best?

It might as well because this was no ordinary game – it was a do or die situation for Real and with all the pressure from the fans on his shoulders, he had every reason to crumble.

But he didn’t.

The Courtois that we saw the other night is the exact Courtois Real saw at Chelsea and at his national team and that’s the goalkeeper who they thought would be worthy of donning their No.1 shirt.

But now comes the more difficult part of the job – keeping this up in the future fixtures.

The 27-year-old was a huge part of their victory over Galatasaray but now he needs to maintain this form.

It remains to be seen if he will be able to do so.

Leeds United not playing Eddie Nketiah is a ‘weird one,’ says Darren Bent

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Darren Bent has been left baffled by the lack of playing time young striker Eddie Nketiah has faced at Elland Road this season after the Arsenal man netted for the England U21s on Friday.

What’s the word?

Leeds United clinched the signing of Nketiah on deadline day, beating off interest from a host of rival Championship clubs including Bristol City, but so far this campaign the forward has been faced with limited game time.

The 20-year-old has played a total of just 133 minutes in the league, which averages out at around 22 minutes per game from six appearances, via Transfermarkt.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

On Friday evening, the Whites’ loanee bagged a goal for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions as they drew with Slovenia, meaning he has now scored five goals in seven games for the U21 squad.

In reaction to his latest exploits, Bent has questioned Nketiah’s future at the west Yorkshire club.

Speaking to Football Insider, the 35-year-old former Premier League striker said:

“He is playing well and Leeds are in a bit of a funny one at the minute. Patrick Bamford puts in such a shift for the team and that’s why he’s probably still in there.

“Eddie Nketiah, to be fair to him, is still sticking the ball in when he’s getting the opportunities. It’s a bit of a weird one because it’s where does Eddie Nketiah go from here?

“If he continues like he is at the minute, through no fault of his own – it’s just that the team are preferring Bamford – what happens to him next season? He’s not going to go back to Arsenal and play, not with the firepower they’ve got there already, so they’re going to be looking for another loan.”

Puzzling decision

Marcelo Bielsa has continually opted for Bamford to lead the line for United this season despite the striker going six games without a goal since bagging four in their opening five matches, per Transfermarkt.

The 64-year-old was so committed to signing Nketiah on deadline day that he gave Arsenal a presentation on how to use him, per The Athletic – surely the Gunners weren’t happy to oblige if that involved him featuring for just an average of 22 minutes per game?

Leeds have since let slip of their lead at the top of the Championship table as they now occupy fifth spot, two points behind league leaders West Brom, who they only beat a couple of weeks ago to end Slaven Bilic’s unbeaten start to the season.

It just seems ever so odd to bring in a player you desperately wanted, only to rarely play him.

At the end of the day, Nketiah’s career could be on the line, given the attacking firepower ahead of him back in north London in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who have scored nine between them this season.
