Between The Lines: Son’s Llorente praise suggests Spurs should hand him new deal

[ad_pod ]

Son Heung-Min has returned to Tottenham Hotspur in sensational form after his miserable exit from the Asian Cup, with two goals in two games evoking discussion over his candidacy for the player of the year award.

What’s the word?

Newcastle United proved to be typically stubborn opponents on Saturday lunchtime. Tottenham’s attacking endeavours were made in vain throughout proceedings, but the introduction of Fernando Llorente proved to be a decisive turning point in the game.

Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to unleash the Spaniard created a new dynamic in the final third and the Spaniard’s presence ultimately paved the way for Son to fire home a ferocious winner.

Llorente provided Son with the opportunity to strike from distance after knocking down a long ball into the South Korea international’s path, proving that the art of old-fashioned centre-forward play still has a place in Premier League football.

It was a timely reminder of the distinctive quality he can offer in attack, and Son was eager to pay tribute to his provider on Sunday, per ESPN.

“Fernando’s doing very well and everyone is ready because we work hard and believe in every single player. It doesn’t matter who plays.”

Llorente’s career in north London looked dead and buried when the transfer window opened for business in January, but events which have unfolded in 2019 have resurrected his career.

However, at 33 years of age, the Spaniard is going to have to do something special to convince Pochettino and Levy to offer him a new deal at the end of the season.

Dortmund could be key to his future at Spurs

Tottenham are well in the hunt for the title but the dominance of Man City and Liverpool suggest their best chance of claiming silverware may lie in Europe.

Next up for Spurs is a massive clash against Borussia Dortmund and, with the first leg set to take place at Wembley in less than ten days’ time, Llorente will be firmly in contention for a starting berth.

In a fixture of this magnitude the 33-year-old could have a dream opportunity to catapult his popularity amongst the supporters and simultaneously convince the club’s hierarchy to keep him in the summer.

According to a recent report from talkSPORT, Tottenham’s back-up centre-forward wants to extent his current deal with the club, which expires this summer.

A talismanic performance at the spearhead of the attack against Dortmund could represent the moment in which he convinces Pochettino to consider offering him a new deal – an agreement which would represent the culmination of a complete turnaround in his career.

Llorente has made significant steps towards completing a u-turn from probable departure to contract extension in the past two fixtures, and now he must finish the job by using his experience to stun Dortmund this month.

Gabriel Jesus gives first Manchester City hat-trick ball to his mum

[ad_pod ]Brazilian speedster Gabriel Jesus only had one person on his mind after the full-time whistle on Wednesday night, his mum.The 21-year-old striker from Sao Paulo moved to the Etihad Stadium in January 2017 for what now looks to be a bargain at £28.8million after scoring 29 goals in 68 games. His most recent match in sky blue came under the watchful gaze of his mother, as Manchester City smashed Shakhtar Donetsk 6-1 in the Champions League to all but secure their path into the Round of 16, needing just a point to progress.Goals on the night from midfielders David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez came either side of each of Jesus’ strikes that earned the Palmeiras product his first City hat-trick.The performance put on by the Brazilian was by far his best of the season, and after the game he admitted the support from his mum helped see him through a rough time in his short career.

The Daily Star reported Jesus as saying: “It was a really special and unforgettable night, not just for scoring my first ever hat-trick but also to dedicate it to my mum.

“She’s always supportive and was here at the stadium. I’m really happy and emotional for being able to dedicate three goals to her.

“It has been difficult since my first injury. It wasn’t a simple one, it was hard to have surgery.â€

Arsenal have to make the most of Matteo Guendouzi after he turned down big clubs

New Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi turned down Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund to join the Gunners this summer, according to The Independent.

What’s the story?

The 19-year-old was part of the Paris Saint-Germain youth academy but he was released at just 14 when he was picked up by Lorient.

The midfielder only featured a handful of times for Lorient in Ligue 1 before they were relegated in 2017 but started more games for the French club in the second division last season.

Guendouzi made his debut for Arsenal against Manchester City and fans should be grateful to have the talent at the club because he turned down serious interest from Dortmund and PSG according to the report.

The teenager wanted to play in the Premier League and believed Arsenal to be the natural choice to develop his career and take him to the top of his game.

Bags of talent

Guendouzi showed in his debut for Arsenal against Manchester City that he is not afraid of getting on the ball, although his inexperience at this level did show on occasions.

The fact that Europe’s top clubs were fighting out for the youngster is a testament to the pull of Arsenal as well as the talent they have on their hands.

It may take him a while to bed in at the Emirates but he’s definitely one to watch and could form the bedrock of the Arsenal central midfield that they have struggled to fill for so long.

Bruce nominated for Manager of the Month, Aston Villa fans react

Steve Bruce was not a favourite among a large number of the Aston Villa fanbase last season.

After arriving at the club in October last year – a few months after walking away from Hull City – the ex-Birmingham City boss failed to steer the team to a promotion challenge.

In the end, Villa were forced to accept 13th place in the table, 18 points adrift of the final playoff spot.

This season did not start as planned either as the team recorded two defeats and a draw in their opening three Championship matches.

The turning point, though, came against Norwich City at Villa Park, where Bruce’s players came out on top in a 4-2 triumph.

Villa have been unbeaten in the league since then, racking up four wins and three draws.

After the international break, the club will be hoping to extend their winning run to five when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Until then, Bruce is in the running to scoop the Manager of the Month award for September after guiding his team to two draws and four back-to-back victories in the league.

There seems to have been a complete turnaround at Villa Park, and that includes the fans’ opinions of Bruce.

Liverpool fans vent with Coutinho in doubt for Stoke clash

Liverpool have had it tough over the course of the past few weeks on the injury front. Captain Jordan Henderson has been sidelined for a while, Adam Lallana’s international break thigh problem came as a blow and Sadio Mane’s season-ending knee set-back has reduced some to tears (well, perhaps).

You’d think that lady luck owed the Reds one heading into this weekend’s Stoke clash, but Jurgen Klopp revealed today that Philippe Coutinho may miss the trip to face the Potters with an illness.

The Brazilian netted his side’s opening goal in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Wednesday but was withdrawn with just over an hour played and appeared to be in some discomfort. With the aforementioned trio out of action, the Merseysiders will be hoping that he can return to full health in time and reaction to the above tweet from the club got quite a reaction…

4-2-3-1, a EURO 2016 semi-finalist & £11m star… The formation for a Spurs title fight

Spurs’ 2015/16 season should not be remembered as a failure.

Even though they were unable to reel in the most unlikely champions in the history of the division in Leicester City and were leapfrogged by Arsenal at the last to maintain their less than enviable record of not finishing above their rivals in the last 21 years, placing in the top four and playing some of best football in England over a full campaign is worthy of praise.

Indeed, the sheer number of Tottenham players in the England EURO 2016 set-up – we’ll gloss over the results – is testament to the good work done by Mauricio Pochettino.

Alas, another season is on the horizon, and the Londoners will have to go again. Can they go one step further and win the title?

Anything is possible, and with this 4-2-3-1 formation, incorporating a few choice additions, they may have a good chance…

Goalie/defence: Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Alderweireld & Hector

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. While this statement rang true for the majority of last season – Spurs conceded the joint fewest (35) goals in 2015/16 – a late collapse showed some of the flaws on Maurico Pochettino’s system.

And it seems that, according to some reports, anyway, this has hit home, with Germany’s Jonas Hector being linked with a move to White Hart Lane.

Although ‘Poch’ has Ben Davies and Danny Rose to choose from at left-back, the EURO 2016 semi-finalist (the German one, that is) is a more solid option defensively, who is capable of marshalling his side of the pitch and rarely gets caught out – he’s been dubbed ‘Mr. Reliable’ for his performances with Koln in the Bundesliga.

Across the rest of the rearguard, it’s business as usual though!

Holding midfielder: Dier & Wanyama

In defensive midfield, Victor Wanyama gets the nod alongside Eric Dier in a physically imposing set-up. The Kenyan, signed for £11m from Southampton, is a player well-versed in Pochettino’s demands – they worked together while at St Mary’s Stadium – and should be able to slot in seamlessly.

With Dier alongside him, Spurs should have one of the most solid engine rooms in the entire league, and this physicality will ensure that the defence is not exposed, while the pair’s tactical awareness will free up the attacking players to play their own game.

Attacking midfield: Lamela, Eriksen, Alli

Only Leicester and Manchester City found the back of the net on more occasions than Spurs last season, and while Harry Kane’s exploits were a major factor in that return, the England international would not have been able to have pulled it off without Alli, Eriksen and Lamela in behind him.

Judging by the sheer lack of links with alternatives, Spurs are seemingly happy to go with the trio again, and with support from the likes of Mousa Dembele, Nacer Chadli and Heung-min Son, they have depth, too.

Up front: Kane or Janssen

How can we overlook Harry Kane? The England man may have had an abysmal EURO 2016, but in a system tailored to get the best from him, as it has been the last two seasons under Pochettino, it’s a different story.

Alas, he will not be able to do it all alone for a third successive campaign, and with reports suggesting a £16m deal for Vincent Janssen is close to going through, a capable deputy may well be on board and ready to step in when needed – he netted 27 times in 34 Eredivisie appearances for AZ Alkmaar last term after all.

Despite interest from several top clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, and Real Madrid, and the reports that the Red Devils and Spurs are currently at the forefront in their pursuit of the 21-year-old defender. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly keen on adding two young center-backs to their squad in the upcoming transfer window. Branthwaite's profile aligns with their focus on homegrown talent, and his left-sided positioning addresses a specific requirement outlined by manager Erik ten Hag for defensive balance.

While Branthwaite remains a primary target for Manchester United, the club is also exploring alternative options in the centre-back position. Players like Antonio Silva from Benfica, Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice, and Leny Yoro from Lille are also under consideration.

The potential transfer fee for Branthwaite could depend on Everton's league status by the end of the season. The Toffees are currently struggling in the Premier League and sit 18th in the table with 19 points. If they go down to the Championship, the Branthwaite could be sold at a discounted rate.

World Cup performance vs population – Minnows Croatia upset the odds to finish third, Morocco exceeded expectations but giants USMNT & Germany underwhelmed… so, how did all 32 countries rank in Qatar?

Part of the attraction of the World Cup is the ability for countries to outperform their size, economic status and club prestige on the pitch

Just like in 2018, Croatia proved to be a powerful force at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar despite numerous factors working against them – including a tiny population to draw talent from relative to the United States, Mexico and others.

Zlatko Dalic made the most of a talented generation led by Luka Modric, guiding Croatia to a third-place finish after a memorable quarter-final upset of Brazil.

So how did all of the competitors stack up when taking population into account? GOAL's list is calculated by working out the difference between where each country ranks in terms of population size and their final ranking at the World Cup.

When teams went out in the same round, we used points (if a team went out on penalties in the knockouts, we say they drew their match), then goal difference and then goals scored to split them.

There was a lot of hope entering the tournament that Canada would be surprisingly competitive, but after playing Belgium close in their opener, they ran out of steam.
