Shoaib to play domestic Twenty20 tournament

Shoaib Akhtar has been included for Pakistan’s national Twenty20 tournament, which starts on October 4 in Lahore, after he was issued an ultimatum by the Pakistan Cricket Board to pay an outstanding fine of Rs 7 million (approx US$105,000). The PCB today announced its 15-member squads for all 13 participating teams, with Shoaib representing Islamabad Leopards. The PCB slapped Shoaib, 33, with the fine last month after he criticised the PCB over its failure to award him a central contract. He was initially banned by the PCB for five years, but the sentence had been reduced to 18 months by an appellate tribunal in June. The ban had restricted him from playing in and for Pakistan but he was given permission to play in England. He’s currently on a short stint with Surrey. He has also been included in the preliminary 20-man squad for next month’s Canada Cup Four Nation Twenty20 tournament.A notable exclusion is the batsman Younis Khan, who was granted permission from the PCB to represent South Australia as their overseas player in their domestic season, which starts next month. The tournament will be staged between October 4-8 at the Bagh-e-Jinnah and Lahore City Cricket Association Grounds. It will serve as a selection trial for the series in Canada, Pakistan’s first international assignment after the recent Asia Cup. The Champions Trophy, scheduled between September 12-28, was postponed due to security issues. For the full list of squads, click here.

Security doubts 'beyond logic' – PCB

The Australian Cricketers’ Association may have told its players not to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in September, but concerns are growing in Pakistan that the decision was made based on hasty, possibly inaccurate security assessments

The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) may have told its players not to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in September, but concerns are growing in Pakistan that the decision was made based on hasty, possibly inaccurate security assessments. An increasingly exasperated Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has questioned the wisdom behind the ACA’s decision and particularly the information on which it was based. “All we can do logically about the situation, we have done,” Shafqat Naghmi, chief operating officer told Cricinfo. “This is now beyond logic. If they are haunted by horror stories there is little more we can do.”The frustration is understandable, given the lengths to which the PCB has gone to address various security concerns – Naghmi is scheduled to meet David Morgan, the ICC president, and Sharad Pawar, the ICC vice-president, in Dubai later on Wednesday. Cricinfo has learnt that a lot of importance was given to Reg Dickason’s private security assessment of venues by players from Australia and New Zealand, even though his was a whistle-stop tour of venues during the Asia Cup in June.Dickason, hired by Cricket Australia, New Zealand Cricket and the ECB, provided, broadly, “a very negative report based on a one-day stay in Karachi simply advising them not to tour” according to an official involved in the recent meetings between the ICC task force and Australian players. The PCB is particularly unhappy for it feels the more comprehensive and accurate assessment of the situation is provided by Nicholls-Steyn, security consultants hired by the ICC who have been analysing the ground situation in Pakistan for several months. The appointment of the firm itself was a recommendation of an earlier ICC security assessment, the Janusian report, carried out in the first week of June. That report, based on a two-day stay in Pakistan, found several concerns, though one of them was the contention that as cricket was a ‘western game’, it constituted a valid target for extremists. But their key recommendation was the presence of a security team permanently in Pakistan to properly assess the situation, one which the Pakistan board readily accepted and which brought Nicholls-Steyn came into the picture.Since then Nicholls-Steyn have worked assiduously with a number of relevant stakeholders to paint an accurate picture of what is happening in Pakistan. Led by Bruce Spargo, they have held briefings not just with police and interior ministry representatives – as most security firms do – but with a much broader network of security, military and intelligence officials.”For example, they met men with hands-on experience of the Afghan situation, with real connections and people who know what is going on in the country and the various threats,” Naghmi said. “They were told there was no feasible threat to the tournament.”Unlike the Dickason report, the Nicholls-Steyn assessment was discussed at the ICC annual meeting at the end of June. Minor concerns were discussed and immediately addressed by the PCB and the interior ministry. The Asia Cup in June and July provided a good dress rehearsal for security arrangements and Nicholls-Steyn were more than content, claiming the arrangements to be “beyond our own expectations.” Such were the arrangements that even the ICC task force, including FICA chief Tim May, was said to have been impressed.Even before the task force was created, however, the concern had already shifted to whether such elaborate arrangements could be sustained and delivered during the tournament itself, with May leading the questioning. “It appears that no matter what he [Bruce Spargo] says, Tim May questions the ability of the Pakistan authorities to deliver the ‘Plan’,” said an official who attended the meetings between Australian players and the task force. While in Pakistan, May suggested organising two practice matches on consecutive days between local teams to get a clearer picture of the arrangements in action. The PCB agreed to this and sent an email to the boards concerned a week ago but have yet to receive a reply. Thus, less than a month before it starts, the status of the tournament remains in limbo. Fear and paranoia is such that when a Pakistani police official spoke of a contingency plan in case of a rocket launch attack during meetings with the task force, he was immediately asked whether he was expecting one.

Rees ton rescues Glamorgan

A round-up from the latest Championship matches

Cricinfo staff02-Sep-2008Division TwoGareth Rees stroked a fine 126 for Glamorgan on the first day against Derbyshire at Derby, pushing the visitors to a respectable 257 for 8 at stumps. Rees aside, however, there was little else from Glamorgan, apart from a typically gutsy 37 from Robert Croft. It could have been so much better for Derbyshire had Tom New held onto a straightforward catch off Jon Clare, the pick of the bowlers, when Rees was on 25. Nevertheless, Derbyshire’s seamers probed consistently and once Tom Lungley held onto a fine catch to dismiss Jamie Dalrymple, Glamorgan were tottering on 84 for 4. Rees found good support from Mark Wallace, and later Croft, as he moved to his third hundred against Derbyshire from 242 balls. He finally fell to Graham Wagg, bowling offspinners in the late-afternoon gloom.Half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Vikram Solanki gave Worcestershire hope that they will cope with life after Graeme Hick, on the first day against Warwickshire at New Road. Hick, who announced his retirement today, was ruled out owing to an elbow injury but the home side fought hard in his absence, with Mitchell and Solanki putting on 129 for the second wicket. Solanki, who avoided the ignominy of three successive Championship ducks, was dropped by Darren Maddy at second slip but kept his resolve to register the pair’s hundred partnership. Mitchell, meanwhile, had played neatly for his 79 before pushing forward tentatively to Neil Carter. And Carter fought back for Warwickshire to remove Ben Smith and Moeen Ali in the same over, but Solanki remained unbeaten on 86 at stumps to leave Worcestershire in command.

Sunderland set to finalise Cirkin deal

Alan Nixon has provided an update on Sunderland’s pursuit of Dennis Cirkin.

What’s the talk?

The Sun’s Alan Nixon has revealed when Sunderland are expected to finalise the signing of Dennis Cirkin from Tottenham. Nixon has claimed that the Black Cats will complete a deal for the young defender on today.

This comes after Football Insider reported earlier this week that Cirkin has agreed a four-year contract with Sunderland ahead of a permanent switch from the Premier League club.

Fans will be delighted

Supporters should be excited by the prospect of this signing. At the age of 19, Cirkin is not arriving at the Stadium of Light as a ready-made League One superstar, who is guaranteed to be the best right-back in the division. He is, however, coming in with the promise and the potential to develop into that type of player.

The full-back once earned high praise from Jose Mourinho, who claimed that he has a ‘lot of quality’ and admitted that he wanted to work with him on the training pitch. He said:

“OK, he’s 17, but he’s a kid with a lot of quality, and I look forward to bringing him to train with us and to help his development.”

This shows how highly he was thought of at Tottenham, suggesting that there is untapped potential in Cirkin. It will now be down to Lee Johnson to ensure that he can unlock that to maximise the quality he can provide.

Total turn around by Pakistan in Port Elizabeth

Pakistan produced a near perfect display of one-day cricket to level the tandard Bank One-Day International series with an emphatic 182-run win overSouth Africa at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.Winning the toss on a pitch that was always going to suit them better than the one in Durban, Pakistan made their intentions clear with Shahid Afridi setting the tone of the innings in the first over. The South Africans’ short-lived joy at the early wicket of Afridi for 13 off eight balls, turned into despair as Saleem Elahi and Abdur Razzaq set about the bowling with a record second-wicket partnership of 257 in 40 overs.Things might have been different had Lance Klusener held on to a fairly easycatch at third man when Saleem Elahi was on 34 and the Pakistan score 66, but that did not deter the batsman from taking full advantage of his second chance. In complete contrast to the innings in Durban, he batted magnificently, recordind his third hundred in four innings, surpassing his highest score of108. By the time he was caught at cover for 135 off 129 balls, including 19sparkling boundaries and the highest score by a Pakistan batsman against SouthAfrica, the damage had been done. When asked about his innings all he could say was “Happy”.Abdur Razzaq was a surprise coming in at number three, where he has had limited success, and played a marvellous chanceless career-best innings of 112, his first hundred in this form of cricket. Using 120 balls to score his runs he recorded 13 fours and two sixes. With the remaining batsmen throwing caution to the wind, Inzamam-ul-Haq managed a quick 36 off 22 balls to leave Pakistan on a massive 335/6, the highest score ever by any team against South Africa, and also the highest at St. George’s Park. When the slaughter was complete, the bowling figures were in tatters with none of the South African bowlers able to maintain an economy rate of less than six per over. Makhaya Ntini and Allan Donald had some success with two wickets apiece.South Africa needed to break the record for a team batting second and winning, improving on the 330 scored by Australia at the same ground after South Africa had posted 327.A good start was imperative and Herschelle Gibbs provided it. A 57-run partnership with Graeme Smith ended when Waqar Younis, after having a good LBW decision turned down, replied by clean bowling Gibbs for 40 in the eighth over. The wicket seemed to inspire him and he proceeded to bowl two excellent maidens in a row including the wicket of Smith for 18, who seemed to run out of patience charging down the pitch to drag the ball into the stumps.Neil McKenzie became the Waqar’s third wicket when an in-swinger trapped him right in front for four.Mohammad Sami, picking up three wickets, once again used his pace to cause problems for the South African batsmen. Boje, on the pull, was caught at long leg. Rhodes played outside a ball to be bowled and Kallis chased a wide one to be caught behind.South Africa had in the space of 10.3 overs gone from 57/1 to 100/7 and Pakistan were well on the way to a well-deserved win.Pollock and Klusener resisted for a short period before Afridi, who had Mark Boucher caught behind, bowled Pollock with a wrong ‘un and had Donald caught behind. Bowled out for 153, South Africa had recorded their lowest score against Pakistan in 12 home internationals. The only positive for South Africa was the increased confidence of Lance Klusener. Ending the night undefeated on 29 he seems to returning to the form he showed during the 1999 World Cup.Pakistan must rate this as one of their best performances in recent years, and a total turnaround from the performance in Durban. Their batting was near faultless and once Waqar Younis found his rhythm it filtered through to the rest of the team.It was an emphatic win that should make them favourites for East London on Friday night before they move on to the quicker pitches in Cape Town and Paarl.

Aston Villa: Fans react to club tweet about Grealish and Mings

Many Aston Villa fans have been venting on Twitter following a post from the club detailing the disappointment suffered by Villa duo Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings after England’s crushing Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

Plenty of discourse centred around the lack of utilisation in relation to Grealish, who registered 19 goal contributions in 26 appearances for the club in 2020/21 [Transfermarkt].

In the 172 minutes that he played at the Euros, the 25-year-old contributed with two assists in five outings [UEFA.com] and played a cameo yet important role in England’s run to the final.

Meanwhile, Mings started the first two group games at the finals but played just 11 minutes thereafter and was not utilised at all in the knockout stages [Transfermarkt].

The comparative lack of involvement for the Villa duo at Euro 2020 duly had many of the club’s supporters venting at England manager Gareth Southgate.

Aston Villa fans react:

Replying to Villa’s official Twitter account, here is what some Villa fans had to say about the lack of minutes for Grealish and Mings at Euro 2020:

“Don’t worry lads, Southgate will be gone soon enough and then you won’t have to put up with his pathological picking of his favourites. How Mount got more minutes than Jack is utterly beyond belief, last night was embarrassing and showed us just how inept Southgate is”

Intriguing clash between former world champions

Pakistan face Sri Lanka Saturday in the Morocco Cup double header aware of the fact that they also need to beat South Africa on Sunday to guarantee themselves a place in Aug 21 final

Samiul Hassan17-Aug-2002Pakistan face Sri Lanka Saturday in the Morocco Cup double header aware of the fact that they also need to beat South Africa on Sunday to guarantee themselves a place in Aug 21 final.Sri Lanka’s additional bonus point against South Africa has turned this tournament upside down and has brought all the possibilities and likelihoods into consideration. The 1996 world champions need just one win to go through whereas South Africa face the same dilemma as Pakistan though they have the cushion of a victory against the 1992 world champions, the result that could be decisive if both the teams finish even on points with Sri Lanka one ahead. In case Pakistan beat South Africa and still both the teams finish on even points, net run-rate comes into play. Pakistan, after first round action, are at the bottom. However, if Sri Lanka lose both their games, Pakistan and South Africa lock horns on Wednesday. However, the throw of the dice is in Pakistan’s favour as they play Sri Lanka on the same pitch on which they defeated them by 28 runs. They then take on South Africa on the turf on which the Proteas were dismissed for 174 in 45 overs. South Africa are not pleased with this arrangement and have expressed their displeasure to the organizers.Pakistan coach, Muddassar Nazar, said that we would field an unchanged team from Wednesday’s game for Saturday’s match. However skipper Waqar Younis believes that the toss has become vital in this tournament. “But I don’t think it is something that we need to allow it to get into our brains,” Pakistan captain Waqar Younis said.Teams (likely):Pakistan: Saeed Anwar, Imran Nazir, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Rashid Latif, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Mohammad Sami. Music to play a major role in the 2003 World Cup

Today (Wednesday) marks exactly 249 days to go before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa in 2003 – a global sports event that will have a major music component throughout its 44 days’ duration

Rodney Hartman05-Jun-2002Today (Wednesday) marks exactly 249 days to go before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa in 2003 – a global sports event that will have a major music component throughout its 44 days’ duration.A committee set up to co-ordinate the big music component for the tournament has been hard at work in order to finalise among others, the theme song.Big names in South African music have been appointed to serve on the committee headed by playwright and chairman of the South African Music Awards, Duma ka Ndlovu. Members of the committee have been sourced from the government, musicians, recording companies and entertainment consultants. The ICC Cricket World Cup marketing director and member of the committee Ms Nomsa Chabeli said Monday that the committee has its work cut out in co-ordinating the huge music component that will keep the world on its feet as the 14-nations tournament gets underway. The World Cup starts on February 8 next year with a planned spectacular opening ceremony in Cape Town and the final will be played at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on March 23. For the first time in a World Cup, a closing ceremony will be held. The music committee is currently going through a selection process for the official theme song and an announcement is expected to be made soon.Commenting on the music component of the 44-day tournament, Ms Chabeli said: "We will have three usages for the theme song. There will be a ceremonial version to be performed during the opening ceremony, a commercially popular version and one for radio and television advertisements."We hope to involve as many South African musicians as possible. We must create a situation where we can celebrate our African culture, create excitement, fun and camaraderie among not only cricket lovers, but all South Africans and indeed the whole world since this is an international event," said Ms Chabeli. She also announced that a national music co-ordinator would be appointed towards the end of June. "This person will look after all our music-related activities, including 12 night-before-match concerts at various venues, 54 carnivals during each day of the tournament, "meet-and-greets" at airports and official hotels, the massive roadshow from Nairobi, Kenya to Cape Town and other live performances."Artists interested in taking part in these performances will be called for later in the year. Details will be announced in the media. In addition it was announced that for the first time at cricket matches in South Africa, no fewer than five languages – Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans and English – will be used by PA announcers during the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year.Twelve venues will host World Cup matches, and the predominant languages of the respective regions will be in use for all announcements in and around the grounds. For example, English and Zulu will be the order of the day at matches in Durban, English, Afrikaans and Xhosa at Port Elizabeth and East London, and English, Afrikaans and Sotho in Bloemfontein. Two PA announcers will be appointed at each venue.

The Turbanator runs into problems

Erapalli Prasanna, in his analysis of the third Test at Barbados, mentioned that Harbhajan Singh needed to attack the batsmen much more

Staff Reporter07-May-2002Erapalli Prasanna, in his analysis of the third Test at Barbados, mentioned that Harbhajan Singh needed to attack the batsmen much more.A fine exponent of the off-spin art himself, Prasanna averred thatHarbhajan, as a wicket-taking bowler, should be plotting the batsman’sdownfall with every ball.
Harbhajan Singh against all batsmen – West Indies first innings at Barbados
© CricInfoA look at Harbhajan’s bowling in the West Indian first inningsconfirms this view. He returned figures of 34.5-7-87-3, so his fansmay argue that he wasn’t completely ineffective. But his first wicketwas that of Carl Hooper after the West Indian skipper had plundered115 runs off the Indian attack, and his other two were of PedroCollins and Adam Sanford, two minions in a woefully weak West Indiantail.Harbhajan’s wagon-wheel against all batsmen in the West Indian firstinnings is telling. Only 20 runs were scored off him in front ofsquare, whereas 23 runs went to the point region and 32 to square leg- an indication that Harbhajan was bowling much too short.A large percentage of an off-spinner’s wickets come from making thebatsman drive against the turn, and although Harbhajan did make thebatsmen play to cover to the tune of 15 runs, that was not nearlyenough. His dropping short made it particularly easy for the batsmanto comfortably turn him behind square for runs; Hooper took 15 runsoff him in this manner. As the sole attacking spinner in the side, Harbhajan shouldundoubtedly follow Prasanna’s advice. He can definitely do so byflighting the ball more and keeping the ball up to the batsman.Knowing that most of the West Indians are not too proficient at playingspin, this tactic may help Harbhajan get back to his old ways ofbamboozling the batsmen.
