Exclusive: Tony Cottee reveals he is concerned by Pablo Fornals’ start at West Ham

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast on behalf of the London Football Awards, Tony Cottee has revealed that he is concerned by Pablo Fornals’ start at West Ham, but insisted that the Spaniard should not be given up on.

Across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, Fornals has already made six starts and six more substitute appearances for the Hammers, but as of yet, has only managed a return of one goal, with that coming against Newport County, as per WhoScored.

Cottee has taken little encouragement from what he has seen of the 23-year-old since he was signed from Villarreal during the summer: “I’m concerned, obviously, because so far he’s really, really struggled with the pace of the Premier League.”

However, the former West Ham striker doesn’t think fans should be writing him off just yet: “What I will say is that he’s not alone in that. We’ve seen many players over the years who have struggled to start with in the Premier League.

“I can think of a young Thierry Henry, who I’m sure would tell you himself, found it very, very difficult the first three, four months of his time at Arsenal, look what a player he turned out to be.”

Henry managed to score just once in his first 12 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, before going on to amass 176 league goals for the North London club, as per Transfermarkt.

The lesson from this is not that Fornals is going to match the Frenchman, but that he should be afforded time, as Cottee explained: “I think everyone’s got to be patient with Pablo. It’s been tough for him, but when he gets these opportunities, you’ve got to try and take them.

“You just hope that maybe he’ll have a good game, maybe get a goal or something and then that’ll kick start his career but so far it’s been a really difficult start for him.”

There will need to be a drastic improvement from Fornals if he is to begin making a creative impact, as he is currently only averaging 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per league game.

Following the excitement of seeing him score twice and get an assist on his way to lifting the U21 Euros trophy during the summer, Fornals’ performances in claret and blue have been a bit anti-climactic so far.

Tony Cottee was speaking as a judge on The London Football Awards, due to take place on 5th March 2020 at Camden’s Roundhouse. Tickets are available from https://

Southgate to Spurs would be immensely damaging for international football

The trajectory of an England national football coach is usually a straightforward affair. First they cut their managerial teeth at an ‘unfashionable’ club. In Graham Taylor’s case that was Lincoln City. For Glenn Hoddle it was Swindon Town. For both Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson it was at Ipswich’s Portman Road where they first learned the ropes, made their mistakes and eventually achieved enormous success.

Indeed so successful were the respective duo that they each went straight from Suffolk to Lancaster Gate, with the former having taken the Tractor Boys on an incredible journey all the way from the Third Division South right up to being crowned as English champions. Robson meanwhile fashioned a side that consistently punched above their weight, twice finishing runner-up in Division One and in 1981 winning the UEFA Cup.

Before Graham Taylor was given the national reins it was necessary for him to prove himself at bigger clubs – with a decade at Watford and a decent spell at Aston Villa – because with all due respect to the Imps you cannot expect to be awarded a job traditionally considered equal in importance to the Prime Minister merely by excelling in the lower leagues. The same thinking applied to Hoddle at Swindon despite him turning the Robins around and achieving promotion to the top flight. First he needed three good years at glamorous Chelsea before England came calling.

This makes sense. Of course it does. Nobody expects to be promoted to foreman after doing well as a teaboy. Nobody takes a shortcut to being made CEO no matter how much they shine on the ground floor.

In the instance of Gareth Southgate however this time-honoured timeline is all messed up. After hanging up his boots in 2006 he was soon after given the top job at a Premier League club for his first forays into the technical area. If this in itself is unusual that pales to what followed next because at Middlesbrough he was initially underwhelming and consequently deemed a failure. If that sounds harsh it is less so when his three seasons in charge are broken down. For the first two campaigns Boro bobbed along, not really doing much at all. Then they got relegated.

A sacking duly followed whereupon Southgate wandered into the wilderness for a short while until he was entrusted with the England Under 21 set-up in 2013. Here again he underwhelmed, taking a promising cache of youngsters that included John Stones and Harry Kane to the 2015 Euros only to see them finish rock bottom of Group B.

It was a surprise then that Southgate was subsequently awarded the most prestigious job in his field, that of national coach, though perhaps it was less of a shock when we consider the circumstances. In light of Sam Allardyce’s controversial departure the FA clearly felt the need to install a proverbial safe pair of hands at the wheel; a ‘company man’ if you will.

Still, this was a route undertaken that is essentially the polar opposite of all who preceded him. Whereas they excelled at club level, thus proving themselves highly capable and more so an outstanding candidate among their peers Southgate had previously only shown relative ineptitude. Now here he was, England’s manager.

We all know what came next. The upturn in results and the routine qualification for the 2018 World Cup. The reaching of a semi-final and the waistcoat.

The emergence of a young and vibrant team and the attaining of another semi-final, this time in the Nations League. From these successes Southgate doubled down on distancing himself from his predecessors because, while they forged a reputation that saw them eventually rewarded with the prized position of national coach, it was in the prized position where his reputation was made. That’s going about things the wrong way around. That’s unheard of.

With that in mind the rumours recently linking him to the Spurs job should Mauricio Pochettino move on brings with it a fascinating scenario, one that sadly illustrates the diminishing of international football’s standing in the modern game. Because for the first time since 1977 when Don Revie left his England post for a lucrative contract in the UAE the FA will have lost their man – not of their own volition and very much reluctantly – to club football, and this after creating him as their own.

The Tottenham crisis deepens even further in the video below…

Now, were we feeling mischievous we might say this would be a long overdue taste of their own medicine. For decades the FA have lured managers from clubs who were flying high and they were flying high because that club dared to take a risk on the individual in question. England simply swooped in and reaped the benefit.

But the role reversal should Southgate indeed be tempted by a switch to north London would go far deeper than that. It would in fact be the summation of a worrying trend that has seen the all-encompassing, box-office big five leagues of Europe relegate their international equivalents to that of a cottage industry by comparison.

Can you imagine Jurgen Klopp leaving Anfield to take on the Germany job? The proposition is ludicrous yet years ago if the German DFB reached out Liverpool would be justifiably concerned. Is it feasible that Brendan Rodgers will become Northern Ireland manager anytime soon? Perhaps in semi-retirement and only then.

Bluntly, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and yes England too are now way down the pecking order when it comes to a manager’s wish-list. They are jobs to take in order to revive a career, or in Southgate’s case, to make your name in the first place.

Here’s a stark fact: where once the home nations were bossed by the best at that point their country had produced – with a roll-call in living memory that includes Bobby Robson, Jock Stein, John Toshack and Terry Venables – now collectively the four managers in charge have three club trophies on their C.V. All come courtesy of Michael O’Neill, who took Shamrock Rovers to two League of Ireland titles and also won the Setanta Sports Cup.

Should Gareth Southgate leave behind all of his fantastic work with England for the bright lights of the Premier League, it will be the final confirmation that the lustre of leading your country is now akin to bossing Burnley or even coaching Charlton.

Ok, not quite, but it will be a damning indictment nonetheless, particularly given the steps he has taken to reunite a nation that had become completely disenchanted with international football prior to his appointment.

Where once it was deemed on a par with residing in 10 Downing Street, the England job would merely resemble a stepping stone onto bigger and better things if Spurs were to put him in the hot seat.

Manchester City fans react to Pep Guardiola’s Champions League admission

Manchester City fans have been debating their Champions League ambitions after Pep Guardiola stated his side are not ready to win the competition just yet.

The Spaniard told reporters: “People say about the Champions League. We still are not ready. We create a lot, we don’t concede but can improve.

“We’ve scored a lot over the last two seasons and I don’t have doubts about that but we have to keep going and work on that.”

Since City’s takeover in 2008, the club has gone onto become the most successful English side of the last decade, winning three Premier League titles as part of a ten trophy haul.

However, the one piece of silverware that still evades them is the Champions League.

The Citizens have not yet reached a European final in this time, with a semi-final defeat to holders Real Madrid in 2016 proving to be their best attempt so far.

However, Guardiola is no stranger to success in the competition, winning 74 matches in 112 fixtures as a manager with three different clubs. He also won the trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, beating City’s rivals Manchester United on both occasions.

The Citizens will resume their quest for Champions League glory tomorrow, as they host Atalanta at the Etihad Stadium. The Premier League champions can make it three out of three with a win over the Italian side in Group C.

Guardiola’s comments have sparked a mixed reaction on social media. Some fans were inclined to agree with his sentiments, but others were less receptive and suggested his attitude could cost them in their pursuit of world football’s most coveted prize.

Here’s how the fans reacted to the manager’s comments…

Barcelona fans urge the club to buy Erling Braut Haaland

The footballing world is going crazy for 19-year-old sensation Erling Braut Haaland. And rightfully so. The young Norwegian centre-forward has played nine games for RB Salzburg across all competitions so far this season and has recorded a sublime total of 17 goals and five assists, including a hat-trick on his Champions League debut against KRC Genk, as his side won 6-2.Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

For that reason, the report coming from Mundo Deportivo stating that Barcelona have already watched the 19-year-old sensation in action doesn’t really come as a surprise. After all, which top club hasn’t done that already?

But many Barcelona fans have urged the Blaugrana to jump to the front of the queue and attempt to bring him to Spain.

Many of them were quick to jump to Twitter as soon as the news of Barca’s reported interest broke.

Leeds are building solid foundations even if Andrea Radrizzani walks away

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Whether Andrea Radrizzani stays at Leeds seems to be a topic that won’t go away.

At times it fades into the background but when reports arise, his time at Elland Road suddenly catches the eye once again.

The Italian businessman has done a superb job with the Whites, a project that will only be complete if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

Alongside Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa, he has guided them from Championship mediocrity to the playoffs and now to the top of the table again.

The one thing that eludes them is the promised land of top-flight football.

For the time being, Leeds are well set to return as they sit first. However, they will be one of the first clubs to tell you how quickly things can change.

They failed to win any of their last four games in 2018/19, before tasting defeat in the playoffs too. It was a wretched way to end a term that had shown so much promise.

Adam Pope claimed on the Talking Shutt podcast earlier this month that Radrizzani could be gone in a year, suggesting Leeds were a beast that needed feeding in terms of financial investment.

If they don’t achieve promotion that seems like a distinct possibility after rumours were battered away in the summer.

The New York Times reported during that period of time that PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi had held talks with Radrizzani over buying a stake.

That didn’t materialise but after Pope’s comments a matter of weeks ago, it’s thrown a shade of doubt around the Italian’s ownership again.

Regardless of whether he leaves, however, Leeds look well set for the future.

Why? Because of their increased attention to youth at LS11.

Marcelo Bielsa has already handed debuts to Alfie McCalmont and Mateusz Bogusz this season while Leif Davis has featured in the centre of defence. That’s before even mentioning Jamie Shackleton.

Key members of the U23 side, the academy at Thorp Arch received a major boost this week as five players agreed to new terms.

Leeds announced new deals for Stuart McKinstry and Charlie Cresswell, as well as tying down Bryce Hosannah, Pascal Struijk and Kun Temenuzhkov.

This shows that a plan is in place for beyond the current season with greater attention now being put upon developing the club for the future, whether or not that includes some of their key figures beyond the playing staff.

Not only that, but plans are in place to build a new training complex at the site of the Matthew Murray school – one that will also involve better youth facilities.

Radrizzani leaving and taking his investment with him would be a huge blow but there is definitely a bright future even if he’s one of the vital men in starting this progression off.

A new training complex and the ability to keep their rising stars suggests they’re well set regardless of whether he stays.

Claudio Bravo should be seriously interesting Newcastle United in the summer

Rafael Benitez should be lining up a new left-back when the summer transfer window opens in a few months time.

The Spaniard was desperate to bolster his options on the left flank back in January with Paul Dummett the only recognised left-sided defender at the club. After watching a move for Jordan Lukaku collapse, Newcastle eventually signed Antonio Barreca on loan from Monaco. However, recent reports from the Chronicle suggest the Italian was low on Benitez’s list of potential targets which makes a permanent move in the summer unlikely.

While Matt Ritchie has performed admirably at left wing-back, it’s clear the former Liverpool boss needs to sign a natural left defender in the summer. Staying in the Premier League will be crucial to Newcastle’s summer transfer plans. Benitez will be hoping the sale of the club is also concluded so transfer funds are made available.

One man the ex-Real Madrid manager should be keeping tabs on is Banfield wonderkid – Claudio Bravo. Valued at just £525k by Transfermarkt, the left-back has been one of the most consistent performers in the Argentina Primera Division this season after breaking into the first-team. Bravo has been ever-present during his 12 appearances this season, earning plenty of praise for his excellent showings.

First and foremost, the 21-year-old is an excellent defender who would add some much-needed stability to the Magpies’ back four. Remarkably, Bravo has averaged an incredible 5.9 tackles per game in Argentina – more than any other player in all of Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Despite his young age, Bravo also reads the game superbly, making 3.7 interceptions per game, again no player in Europe’s top five leagues has averaged more. Not only does the youngster excel defensively, he also loves to get forward to help out the attack, averaging an impressive 2.2 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game (WhoScored).

Bravo has the potential to be special and could be Newcastle’s long-term solution to their left-back dilemma.

Man City fell to Norwich defeat due to Pep Guardiola’s frustrating complacency

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Despite coming up against a wounded Norwich side, Manchester City suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Snapshot

Having won the league last season, City had made an impressive start to the current campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side headed into Saturday afternoon’s clash with the Canaries having amassed a total of 10 points from a possible 12.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The beginning of the Champions League group stages this week may have given the City boss something extra to think about, and it undoubtedly played a part in the decision to drop star man Kevin De Bruyne to the bench.

In the end, it back-fired spectacularly on the reigning champions, with the Belgian’s impressive second half cameo unable to prevent the Citizens from falling to a defeat.

Off the bench

Speaking after the game, Guardiola admitted he left De Bruyne on the bench with a view to the fixtures coming up. That in itself speaks of a reasoning steeped in complacency. Surely the biggest game is always the next one? Could the Belgium international not have started the match against Norwich, given City a two or three-goal lead, and then be subbed off?

Instead, Guardiola brought De Bruyne on in the 56th minute when the Etihad side were already 3-1 down. The 28-year-old’s contribution after he came on underlines how much of a gaffe it was to leave him out.

The Belgian made three key passes, a total only bettered by Raheem Sterling, and put a game-high 13 crosses into the box. Sadly for City, the midfield maestro was simply given too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

After a campaign in which things were so neck-and-neck between the top two last season, it truly is baffling to see Guardiola take such a huge risk in the Premier League. Already, City find themselves five points behind table-toppers Liverpool.

The club’s Champions League group looks relatively straight-forward with no heavy hitters, and the Carabao Cup is surely at the bottom of the pile when it comes to setting priorities.

So for the City boss to make such a huge gamble is all the more perplexing, and it shows that despite his total mastery of the league over the last two seasons, he still hasn’t learned Premier League lesson 101 – anybody can beat anybody.

Rangers transfer news on Simpson

Jordan Campbell has now revealed the latest on a potential Glasgow Rangers exit for Jack Simpson.

The Lowdown: Simpson rumours

There have been rumours going around that the Ibrox faithful have accepted a bid from QPR for Simpson, while both Middlesbrough and Swansea City have also been linked with a move for the former Bournemouth man.

He is not getting much game time at all for the Gers, having only played in five matches across all competitions so far this season, so an exit on Transfer Deadline Day does look likely at this stage.

The Latest: Campbell update

As per The Athletic journalist Campbell, reports linking Simpson with a move to QPR are ‘untrue’, and while both Swansea and Middlesbrough have made enquiries over a potential loan deal, Rangers would prefer to sell him on a permanent transfer. Campbell revealed:

“Understand that reports Jack Simpson is heading to QPR are untrue. “Swansea and Middlesbrough among the teams to have enquired about a loan deal but it’s believed Rangers will only consider a permanent transfer.” The Verdict: Sell

If the Gers can negotiate a permanent exit for Simpson, then they must do at all costs. He is simply not playing enough and would not be a big loss to Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his squad.

When he has played, he has often been criticised by both journalists and fans alike, and in truth, his move to Scottish football has not quite worked out.

Thus, given that he is 25 years of age, they could still get a decent transfer fee for him should they be able to sell.

West Ham eyeing Dael Fry

According journalist Dean Jones of Eurosport, speaking to GiveMeSport, West Ham are firmly in the hunt to sign Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye defensive back-up…

In the build up to January, the Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman were heavily linked with a number of central defensive additions amid West Ham’s previous emergency.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-3/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

90min claimed they could even turn to the Championship as they became linked to Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, QPR mainstay Rob Dickie and Boro’s Fry.

According to Jones, speaking to GMS, that interest has remained as Moyes, West Ham and Newman remain in the picture to sign Chris Wilder’s star defender.

The Latest: West Ham in the mix…

Indeed, as per the ‘transfer insider’, the Hammers are very much in contention alongside a number of Premier League clubs.

Dael Fry and [Marcus] Tavernier are obviously making headlines at the moment following Middlesbrough’s great win,” he explained.

“Both of those players will be available in the summer if Middlesbrough don’t manage to win promotion. So, there are a lot of Premier League clubs looking at these two players, Dael Fry, in particular, Wolves, Brighton, West Ham and Southampton are all very interested in him.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

He is estimated by Jones to cost around £20 million, but for this amount, is Fry worth the plunge?

Likened to England international and Man City defender John Stones (90min), the 24-year-old has been a crucial player for Boro over these past few seasons with former boss Neil Warnock even claiming last year they ‘cannot replace’ him.

Tavernier has waxed lyrical over the ‘unbelievable’ Fry before but his lack of experience in the Premier League makes a £20m bid potentially risky business.

Everton transfer news on Allan

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has emerged on Allan.

As per Il Messaggero, Lazio are now interested in signing the central midfield player in the January transfer window, as he has been made available for loan.

It seems very strange that the Merseyside club would let him go in the middle of the season, especially on loan, given that he has been a mainstay in the team under Rafa Benitez.

Allan has been a key player for the Toffees this term, averaging the most tackles (2.8) per game in the Premier League out of his teammates, while he also ranks highly in terms of average dribbles (0.9) and passes (36.9), and has supplied two assists (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Blues raging after they read the news, especially considering they may already be unhappy about the departure of Lucas Digne, who is expected to agree personal terms with Aston Villa today (Sky Sports).
