Peter Moores, England’s coach, has still not decided whether former captain Michael Vaughan should be brought back to the national side. The England touring party for the West Indies series, which starts next month, will be announced on Monday.Vaughan, 34, stepped down from the captaincy in the summer and had said he wanted a break from the game. He was awarded a central contract in September and has stated his desire to be a part of the side for the West Indies tour.He has played little cricket since last July, and missed an opportunity to get some match practice after the England Performance Programme squad’s trip to India was cut short after the Mumbai terrorist attack last month.”Michael has had no cricket,” Moores said. “But we have got to look at where we are now as a team and what we think is right to go forward as a batting unit.”So we will look at those decisions once the dust has settled, get the views of people like (national selector) Geoff Miller, and the views of the side of the camp and make our decisions to announce in the new year.”But we do know in Michael we have someone who is outstanding as an individual and is also a fantastic player. We have to weigh all that up about the players we’ve got in the squad at the moment.”Vaughan and Middlesex batsman Owais Shah could be competing to take the place of under-pressure Ian Bell, who has managed only one half-century in his last ten Test innings. Shah was England’s highest run-getter, making 236 runs at a strike-rate of 102, in their 5-0 one-day series loss to India.”We left out Owais Shah for the two Tests after doing very well in the one-dayers and is pushing very hard for his Test place,” Moores said. “So we have to look at that and pick what we think is the best squad to go to the West Indies and following the West Indies away and at home we’ve got the big Ashes coming up.”Former captain Nasser Hussain was less ambiguous on the Vaughan issue, writing in the that Vaughan had not done enough to justify a recall. He wrote that Vaughan should be reconsidered for the national team only after he made his case scoring runs for Yorkshire early next season.

What Moyes must do after Antonio blow

It may not have happened in the way that many would’ve expected but it was inevitable.

West Ham will be without the services of their leading talisman Michail Antonio for their next Premier League outing, the tricky test of league leaders Manchester United, after the 31-year-old striker was sent off on Saturday afternoon.

In what was described as “stupid” by David Moyes, Antonio lunged into a tackle on Southampton’s Moussa Djenepo in the fifth minute of injury time to pick up his second yellow card.

The east Londoners failed to secure a new forward during the summer transfer window, so it now leaves the Scot in a tough predicament as he does not have the options to replace him outright, so this will come as a devastating blow ahead of a huge encounter.

Given Antonio’s injury history, we knew this situation was coming at some point, so they can count their lucky stars that it’s only a one-game ban and not something much longer as that would seriously hamper their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 season.

So, who should step up in the role?

On the Chalkboard

There are plenty of options to choose from.

Andriy Yarmolenko could be given a rare lifeline but considering he started just one league game last season – even when Antonio was in the squad too – it would be hard to imagine the Irons’ highest-paid player coming back into the starting XI anytime soon.

Said Benrhama is another who could step up and play a false nine-type role, especially after kickstarting the season with two goals and two assists. He’s already surpassed his goal tally from last season (one) and did find himself play up top on two occasions, too.

Moyes could even turn to the youth team in a desperate bid to find an alternative, with Thierry Nevers the most likely candidate following Mipo Odubeko’s loan to Huddersfield Town.

However, the best choice has to be Jarrod Bowen, who has also started the campaign on fire.

As per WhoScored ratings, the 24-year-old dynamo currently ranks as Moyes’ third-best player after their opening four matches, behind only Antonio and Declan Rice.

His average of 2.3 dribbles and 1.3 shots per game suggests that he can continue to be a nuisance to any Premier League backline, no matter the position he’s deployed in.

Bowen has experience in leading the line, too.

The former Hull City and Hereford United gem has played as a centre-forward or a second striker on 25 occasions, where he has scored nine goals and provided seven assists, as per Transfermarkt’s recorded matches.

During his time at the KCOM Stadium, Bowen was lauded as “unplayable” in attack and more recently, talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan described him as a “world-beater” (31 August, 10:50am).

The £26m-rated attacker must be the one to replace Antonio next weekend. Moyes could move him forward and bring summer signing Nikola Vlasic into the side, with Pablo Fornals and Benrahma able to run the channels instead.

New Zealand Cricket apologises for controversial slogan

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has apologised to the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) for the controversial marketing slogan to promote the first Test between New Zealand and West Indies in Dunedin next month

Cricinfo staff24-Nov-2008New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has apologised to the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) for the controversial marketing slogan to promote the first Test between New Zealand and West Indies in Dunedin next month. Justin Vaughan, NZC’s chief executive, assured that the slogan “It’s all white here!”, adopted by Otago Cricket, the staging association, was intended to promote Test cricket and not anger anybody.”New Zealand Cricket absolutely accepts the assurances of all concerned in Dunedin that the promotion was put together with the best of intentions and with no racial overtones – it was a way of celebrating the biggest Test match in Dunedin for many years,” Vaughan said in a press release.”At the same time, I appreciate that it had the potential to be misinterpreted, and I apologise to the West Indies players and to the officials for any offence taken – none was intended.”The WIPA had earlier slammed the slogan, suggesting that it was loaded with racial innuendoes. One commentator, Billy Ibadulla, said “the connection between the phrase and white clothing is stupid at best, and grievous at worst.”The University Oval, the newest Test centre in the country, will host the match from December 11. It hosted Bangladesh for a Test in January when the city had its first taste of international cricket in nearly three years after Carisbrook ceased to be a venue.

Thiago Santos sofre lesão e vira desfalque no Palmeiras

Everton transfer update on Davies

Some Everton fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged on Tom Davies.

As per The Athletic, the central midfield player was made available for transfer by the Goodison Park faithful in the summer window, but he preferred to stay and fight for his place.

Davies picked up form toward the end of the 2020/21 term, after often finding himself criticised by some supporters of the Merseyside club earlier on in the season.

Being a local boy, it would have been a real shame for Rafa Benitez’s team to have decided to let him go, and his attitude in terms of wanting to fight for his place has to be admired.

Thus, it is not a surprise at all to see so many Toffees raging over the news.

Everton fans on Davies transfer update

These Blues fumed as the transfer update was shared on Twitter, with one EFC fan even going as far as to claim that it was ‘appalling’:

West Indies earn praise for performance in SL

Ann Brown-John, vice-president of the Trinidad & Tobago Women’s Cricket Board of Control, has praised the West Indies team for their performance on the tour of Sri Lanka

Cricinfo staff18-Nov-2008Ann Brown-John, vice-president of the Trinidad & Tobago Women’s Cricket Board of Control, has praised the West Indies team for their performance on the tour of Sri Lanka. Despite losing the ODI series 3-2, she said there was much hope to be taken from the experience.”I think they had a great performance. Unfortunately they didn’t win the series, but it was in preparation for the upcoming World Cup in Australia and they must have gained some experience from it that they can now use.”West Indies won the opening match but lost the second and third matches, played in Dambulla. A spirited fight in the fourth match in Colombo helped them draw level, but Sri Lanka eventually clinched the series with a win in the final game at the same venue.Brown-John said she was particularly impressed with the performances of the Trinidadian players in the West Indies squad. “In most of the games, they had good performances, either with the bat or the ball, which would have contributed to the overall success of the team. I saw that Marissa [Aguillera] top-scored in one of the games and Stacy [Ann-King] won the Player-of-the-Match award on two occasions, so I think that they (the local players), had quite a credible performance.”Stefanie Taylor was the most successful West Indian batsman on the tour, scoring 222 runs at 37.00, and was also among the pick of the bowlers, along with Anisa Mohammed and Afy Fletcher with seven wickets each. The team returned home at the weekend and will continue their preparations for their next assignment – the 2009 Women’s World Cup in Australia to be played from March 7-22.

New Zealand push for result in rain-hit match

Daniel Vettori made a sporting declaration and then took three wickets in an over as the visitors strived for a result after three days of rain

Three days have been lost in the second Test, but New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori decided to make it a contest on the fourth. He declared with less than an hour’s play left in the day, and then struck three blows in his only over to leave Bangladesh in a spot of bother.New Zealand pulled out at 262 for 6, knowing their only chance of victory was to dismiss the hosts twice before the end of the fifth day. Put in to bat, they had wriggled out of an uncomfortable 49 for 3 thanks to a 137-run stand between Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum. The pitch had dried out into a batsman-friendly deck by the afternoon. The ball was no longer swinging in the air and Bangladesh’s openers looked relatively comfortable, though Junaid Siddique wasn’t at ease against short-pitched deliveries from Iain O’Brien. However, at 13 without loss and after offspinner Jeetan Patel had already bowled two overs, Vettori began to stamp his mark on the game, just as he had in the first Test.In the tenth over of Bangladesh’s innings, Siddique seemed to lose all concentration, dancing down the pitch to Vettori’s first ball and was stumped by McCullum. Captain Mohammad Ashraful, who was the next man in, kept out the first ball he faced, but was adjudged lbw to his second delivery and the third ball of the over. Rajin Saleh replaced his captain but soon joined Ashraful back in the dressing room following his dismissal on the last ball of the over. He was also trapped in front. It wasn’t one-way domination, though. After the rains finally let up, Ashraful won the toss and elected to bowl. His team had early success. Opener Aaron Redmond was the first to go, shouldering arms to a delivery from Mashrafe Mortaza which pitched on a good length just outside the off stump and cut back sharply. Jamie How’s footwork wasn’t convincing during his brief stay and the failure to meet the ball on the front foot led to his downfall. Facing the debutant Mahbubul Alam in his second over, the ball swung through the air, pitched on middle and knocked over leg stump. New Zealand’s start was far from ideal as they had lost their openers with only 10 on the board.Ross Taylor and Ryder began positively, both looking comfortable on the front foot and Taylor settled in with beautiful drives through the off side. But just as he looked set for a bigger score, he became the second player to be dismissed by an error in judgement. Like Redmond, he shouldered arms to a delivery from Shahadat Hossain, only to see it cut back off the pitch to hit the stumps. Taylor fell for 19 and ended the partnership of 39.Ryder and McCullum helped New Zealand take the upper hand. Ryder was finally dismissed nine runs short of what would have been his first Test century in his second Test. He and McCullum both punished any short bowling through the leg side, while anything over pitched on the off side was swiftly dispatched gracefully to the boundary.Going to lunch at 198 for 4, McCullum added two to his lunch score of 64 before he got a leading edge to a delivery from Shakib Al Hasan. He was caught at midwicket by Ashraful. Vettori hit a quick 22 before he played a delivery from Ashraful onto his stumps with the score at 233. Daniel Flynn was unbeaten on 35 and Grant Elliott had made 8 when the declaration came. The pick of the Bangladesh bowlers was Shakib, who took 1 for 57 off 22 overs. Alam impressed in his first spell, swinging the ball in the air and moving it off the pitch. While a result may be unlikely tomorrow, the New Zealanders will know they can win a Test match in two days. They did it in the first Test against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2005. Vettori is likely to be their key man tomorrow; in that Harare win, he had match figures of 6 for 29 and scored 127 off just 98 deliveries.
