Middle-order woes for hosts in dead rubber

ESPNcricinfo previews the fifth ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia in Colombo

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale21-Aug-2011Match factsAugust 22, Colombo
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Sri Lanka’s middle order has been woeful. Can they find enough runs for a consolation win?•AFP

Big PictureIt’s dead-rubber time. Australia have won the series, but Sri Lanka could still make the scoreline a more respectable 3-2 with victory in the final match in Colombo. But they need to score runs for that to happen. Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan have chipped in at times during the series without ever changing a match. The middle order has been woeful, from Angelo Mathews throwing his wicket away to a serious lack of form from Chamara Silva, Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis. The only highlight has been Upul Tharanga’s century in the third match, and surprise, surprise, Sri Lanka won that match. Can they find enough runs for a consolation win?For Australia, winning the series has been an admirable result given their recent form and the off-field drama at home with the release of the Argus report. The key has been a fine bowling performance from every member of the attack. Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger, Brett Lee and Xavier Doherty have all starred at times during the series, and have given their batsmen small enough totals to chase without too much trouble. Australia would love to make it 4-1, especially with eight members of the ODI squad staying for the Tests. There’s nothing like a winning mindset.Form guide (Most recent first)
Sri Lanka LWLLW
Australia WLWWWIn the spotlightSeekkuge Prasanna was having a rather unmemorable debut until the last few minutes of Saturday’s loss. He had made a duck and then his first five overs of legspin at international level brought him 0 for 32. Suddenly, it all changed in a triple-wicket maiden that gave the Sri Lankan fans something to cheer. He had Shaun Marsh and Michael Hussey caught behind off consecutive balls, and two deliveries later bowled David Hussey. Prasanna finished with 3 for 32 and while it wasn’t enough to save the match, it showed that he is a man to watch in this Sri Lanka side. He’s been around the one-day team for three years, but Shaun Marsh could finally be on the verge of claiming a permanent place in the side. Brad Haddin’s move down the order is likely to be permanent, and Marsh’s calm 70 in the victory over the weekend was a strong indication he is the man to partner Shane Watson in the long-term. And another impressive innings on Monday wouldn’t hurt his chances of forcing his way into the Test side, either.Team newsWhat to do with the middle order? That’s been a problem for Sri Lanka right through the series, with Dinesh Chandimal, Chamara Silva and Jeevan Mendis all failing in every innings they’ve played. Chandimal has already been axed, but who should get the job in the final match? Perhaps his legspin will mean Mendis is brought back in. Whatever the case, Sri Lanka need more runs. Simple.Sri Lanka: (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Jeevan Mendis, 7 Nuwan Kulasekara, 8 Shaminda Eranga, 9 Seekkuge Prasanna, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga.Australia have won the series, so they have the luxury of resting or rotating as they see fit ahead of the Tests. Maybe that will mean a match off for Mitchell Johnson, or for Shane Watson, but it is a risk to mess with winning form. A more likely scenario is one of the extra bowlers being given a run – perhaps the allrounder John Hastings. David Hussey hasn’t had any impact with the bat and could easily be squeezed out.Australia: (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 Mitchell Johnson, 8 Brett Lee, 9 John Hastings, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Doug Bollinger.Pitch and conditionsThere wasn’t a lot of pace in the Colombo pitch on Saturday, and there was some spin on offer. The forecast is for a thundery shower and a top temperature of 27C.Stats and trivia Lasith Malinga is the only Sri Lankan bowler to have taken more than three wickets in the series Sri Lanka have lost 39 wickets in the series at an average of 20.94 per wicket; Australia have lost 20 at an average of 37.20Quotes”We’ll try our best to make it 3-2, but I’m really disappointed.”
“It’s been a big couple of days, I think it’s shown real character from all the guys.”

Former captains fear slide for India

India’s dismal performance in England has seen them lose the No. 1 ranking in Tests, and several former captains and players concur that it could be a while before they regain the position

India’s dismal performance in England has seen them lose the No. 1 ranking in Tests, and several former captains and players concur that it could be a while before they regain the position. A lack of preparation has been pointed out as one of the chief reasons for India’s three consecutive losses, and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the former India captain, does not think the Indian board will learn their lesson and plan more meticulously for future series”I don’t want to sound like a pessimist but I fear the players are going to say it’s only a bad dream, just forget it and get on,” he told . “The BCCI is not going to show a great deal of vision. Cricket will continue the way it is but I sincerely hope that some sense does come in.”Sourav Ganguly, who led India to a 1-1 draw in England in 2002, said the performances were worrying and may not just constitute a one-off bad tour. “You can lose Test matches but losing three in a row and not scoring any big total, it is something to be worried about,” Ganguly said. “Is it a one-off affair or the beginning of the demise of the side? We have to see.”What is particularly worrying for India is that their batting has failed despite the presence of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, who have 37,769 Test runs between them. Anil Kumble said things would only get harder for India once those three retired, and the challenge now was just to stay near the top rather than reclaim the No. 1 ranking. “You need to spot four-five players and invest in them, to ensure that they carry the responsibility of Indian cricket in future in place of the veterans,” Kumble said. “We have Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir”They have to be given a long rope. You may not see India come back at the top in quick time. But we have to ensure that with these youngsters, we remained in the top three and climb to top spot after a few years.”Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar said that apart from the fact that India had very little time to prepare for the series, complacency had also played a role in their defeat.”I knew that it will be a tough series for India considering the fact that they were up against a formidable team that’s on song and consistent in their performance in recent times,” Vengsarkar said.”Besides, they have a better attack and as a team they had enough time to prepare themselves for the series. India on the other hand had come back from the gruelling series in West Indies, had a very little time to prepare and adapt to English conditions.”I guess, the Indians had become a bit complacent after their good run in the last few seasons,” he said.Kumble’s sentiments on the need to blood youngsters were echoed by Arun Lal, the former India batsman, who also said the magnitude of the loss in England may serve as a much-needed wake-up call for India and ensure they are better prepared for future tours.”You cannot go on with 35 or 38-year-olds till eternity. There might be slowing down of the reflexes, weakening of eyesight etc. So we need to infuse new talent,” Lal said. “We have to ensure that we have enough preparation before such tough series. The series loss and World No. 1 Test ranking slipping away is in a way good. We need an awakening.”

Dhoni wary of WI pace attack

Ms Dhoni, India’s captain, has said that the West Indies fast bowlers will be a force to contend with on a bouncy track at Sabina Park

Sriram Veera in Kingston19-Jun-2011MS Dhoni, India’s captain, has said that the West Indies fast bowlers will be a force to contend with in the first Test on a Sabina Park track that promises to have some bounce and carry.”West Indies have a good bowling attack. They have bowlers who can bowl fast, and if they can bowl at the right areas they can cause problems to the batsmen. That’s what Test cricket is all about, you have to negotiate good bowlers and balls, and as a batsman you need to push the bowlers to bowl into your zone.”So it will be a good competition for our batsmen. I think the wicket here will be different from the first three one-dayers where the ball turned a lot.”With Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth back in India recovering from injuries and Munaf Patel struggling with an elbow problem that threatens to put him out of the first Test against West Indies, Dhoni said the fitness of his bowlers will be the key factor if India are to do well in Test cricket in the near future. After playing three Tests against West Indies, India head to England for another four Tests.”All the high profile series are coming up and what’s important to keep all the bowlers fit,” Dhoni said. “I think fitness is one area that can have a real impact because it’s not a short format where you need to bowl only four overs or 10 overs. In Test match, you may need to bowl 15, 16, 17 overs, and sometimes close to or over 25 overs in an innings irrespective whether you are a fast bowler or spinner.MS Dhoni is back to lead India in the Test series against West Indies•AFP

“So, I think fitness is the key because you need your best bowlers to play in the high-profile series and it’s important for them in a space where they are physically and mentally fit, so that they can achieve that.”India are missing a few of their senior players but Dhoni preferred to see it as a great opportunity for the younger players to stake their claim to international cricket. “This is an ideal opportunity for each and every individual, and that’s how I want everyone to look at it. What’s important is to move them into the right direction, you know. Each and every individual who are part of this side want to enjoy cricket. You don’t want them to be under pressure, thinking that we are not playing in India and we are playing abroad. So, what’s important is to create an atmosphere where they love the challenge because if there is no challenge you can’t prove the mettle you have.”We tell the youngsters the importance of doing the small things right, and it’s all about not thinking about the number of Test matches you have to play, or how many of them are outside India, and I think that will help us to perform consistently.”Dhoni was rested for the ODI series that India won 3-2, and said that the break helped him recover from minor niggles and refreshed him physically and mentally. “Personally, the break has helped me. All that small-small injuries vanish suddenly. You will have plenty of energy and you are not running on reserve battery, and you want to do more and more things in the net session, like giving time to wicketkeeping, batting or you may be bowling for fitness … I am happy to be back in action.”

Classy Badrinath stars in easy win

S Badrinath walked into a tricky situation, took charge of the chase without playing a single ugly shot, and finessed Chennai Super Kings to No. 2 in the IPL table with an easy win, though the game ended in the final over

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar27-Apr-2011

Who said there is no room for a purist in the IPL? S Badrinath walked into a tricky situation, took ownership of the chase of 142 without playing a single ugly shot, and finessed Chennai Super Kings to No. 2 in the IPL table. His effort came after Chennai’s seamers made exemplary use of the extra bounce on the DY Patil strip to restrict Pune Warriors to an under-par score, despite a well-paced 62 from Yuvraj Singh.Badrinath’s virtuoso effort made the total seem woefully inadequate though Chennai dawdled listlessly until he came in. Badrinath isn’t your typical IPL hero. His upright stance, clean feet movement, classical backlift and high-elbow follow-through are all made for Test cricket. Yet, he has managed to find a niche for himself in Chennai’s muscular top order. Today he unfurled an IPL innings of rare beauty: there were no cross-batted slogs, no cheeky lap-scoops to deliveries landed outside off, and not once was he caught napping on the front foot to a short ball.Chennai are not fond of chasing, and today it was evident why. M Vijay and Michael Hussey began too cautiously and the result was 14 dot-balls in the first four overs. Hussey then heaved Murali Kartik to midwicket where Manish Pandey took a tumbling catch. Badrinath earned a promotion ahead of the out-of-form Suresh Raina, and the swap helped both batsmen.Chennai had crawled to 39 for 1 in eight overs when Badrinath decided to counter-punch. He trotted out to Kartik and launched him for four through long-off. Kartik tossed the next ball further up, and Badrinath carved him inside-out for a six. Badrinath came out again later in the over, hoodwinking Kartik into dropping short, and then glided him to third man. The over went for 16, and in next over, Badrinath opened up the off side again, lofting Yuvraj for six more. Seventy-seven required off 60, and Chennai did not look back from there.Rahul Sharma thought he had got Badrinath to edge the first ball of the 11th behind, but the umpire gave it not out and replays were inconclusive. Vijay managed to swipe Jesse Ryder over midwicket but his scratchy innings ended in typical fashion when he holed out against a slow legcutter. Badrinath carried on as if nothing had happened, angling near-yorkers to third man and drilling half-volleys to the straight boundary. Suresh Raina ended the contest in the 18th over, muscling Jerome Taylor for sixes over long-off.In reality, Pune lost the match in the first half itself. Ryder fell top-edging an effort ball from Doug Bollinger that rose quickly from short of a length. Mohnish Mishra perished to the pull as well, not bothering to adjust to the length after plonking his front foot forward. Nuwan Kulasekara then dismissed Mithun Manhas with a trademark inducker that squeezed between bat and pad to disturb the leg bail. Manish Pandey departed to a replay of Mishra’s brain-fade, cross-batting Tim Southee off the front foot straight to mid-on, as Pune stumbled to 41 for 4.Yuvraj survived a loose flail at a Kulasekara offcutter first ball. He thumped the next delivery, one of the few over-pitched by Kulasekara, through cover. Thereafter he settled in carefully, and set himself for a late assault. Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa tried to dominate spin, and managed to cart R Ashwin for sixes before falling to his carom ball for the second time in three days. Yuvraj opened up after Uthappa’s fall, lifting Ashwin with the angle over midwicket before launching Doug Bollinger straight for the shot of the afternoon. He slammed Tim Southee for two sixes in the last over as Pune finished their innings with a flourish. Their last five overs yielded 50, but it was not good enough. What Pune missed was a batsman with the technical excellence and mental fortitude of Badrinath to support Yuvraj.
