India and Australia will have their Champions Trophy fortunes decided on Wednesday after a washout in the match between the two sides in Centurion on Monday, when Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey led a strong Australian batting effort. Australia reached 234 for 4 before the deluge that had appeared imminent for more than an hour finally arrived and set in.It meant the only winner was Pakistan, who are now assured of a semi-final spot. The fate of Australia and India now rests with the final two group matches, both on Wednesday. For India to progress they must thrash West Indies and lift their net run-rate while also hoping Australia lose to Pakistan; any win or no-result for Australia in their remaining match and they are through.Australia were the frontrunners when the match was abandoned. There was no centurion at Centurion but a string of half-centuries from Ponting, Hussey and Tim Paine, as well as a late flurry from Cameron White set them on a comfortable course. As the players toiled against the backdrop of lightning, White lifted the tempo with an unbeaten 35, including a monstrous six over midwicket off Amit Mishra.However, it was Ponting and Hussey who controlled the middle of the innings as they kept the scoreboard ticking over with little drama. Hussey was typically unobtrusive in compiling 67 from 65 deliveries, driving through gaps and haring through for single after single. There had been a reverse sweep early in his innings but he’d taken few risks until he lofted a wide ball from Ishant Sharma, who bowled poorly, straight to Sachin Tendulkar at long off.Ponting was more classical, if slower to score his 65 runs, until he was caught short by a magnificent direct hit from the deep from Gautam Gambhir. Until that moment, Ponting had looked set for a century as he settled into a rhythm with quick singles and the odd cracking cut or drive, as well as one brilliant, high lofted drive for six off a good-length Praveen Kumar delivery.Ponting was the anchor, combining in an 88-run stand with Hussey and an 84-run partnership with Paine, while India’s bowlers battled to make inroads into the top order. Paine was the aggressor early and took plenty of risks. He walked down the pitch to Ishant and turned him over midwicket for four, also pulling him for six as Ishant’s first over cost 16 and his first three overs leaked 30.The risk-reward strategy continued against Harbhajan Singh, whose first ball to Paine was paddle-swept for four from on the stumps and later in the same over Paine reverse-swept another boundary to bring up his half-century. However, Paine’s luck expired on 56, when he top-edged another paddle-sweep off Mishra to midwicket.Mishra and Ashish Nehra were the most impressive bowlers in an Indian effort that lacked bite. There was sharp turn for Mishra but not a great deal of assistance for the fast bowlers, although India could also have used a sharper fielding effort – Paine should’ve been run out on 6 and on 31 his edge off Mishra flew between MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid at first slip.After India lost the toss, Nehra gave them the perfect start when he consigned Shane Watson to his third consecutive one-day international duck. Nehra found some extra bounce that surprised Watson, whose top-edged pull lobbed to Harbhajan at midwicket.There wasn’t much more joy for India, although the washout was a reasonable outcome for them given Australia’s solid batting. However, India need to find some spark to hammer a West Indies side that has fought well in this tournament, and they must also hope for a Pakistan win against Ponting’s men. Australia’s fate is in their own hands.

– A importância do Botafogo para mim é imensa. É um clube pelo qual tenho um carinho enorme, onde passei uma fase muito boa da minha vida, onde fui campeão e pude fazer grandes amigos. Hoje, defendendo o Juventude em uma nova função, vou fazer o melhor para que possamos sair com a vitória – disse Fahel, que também jogou e encerrou a carreira pelo Juventude (de 2016 a 2017).

Aos 37 anos, Fahel também destacou a crença no trabalho de reconstrução que tem ajudado a desenvolver no clube gaúcho, que busca se recuperar da recente queda à Série C e voltar à elite do futebol brasileiro. A experiência faz parte dos planos de Fahel em se tornar treinador.

– Nós acreditamos muito no trabalho que estamos fazendo. É um clube que está se reerguendo, procurando voltar para o cenário nacional e, quem sabe, estar jogando a Série A, entre os maiores no futebol brasileiro. Futuramente quero assumir como treinador, trazendo as coisas boas que aprendi. Estou muito feliz nessa nova fase – completou.

L!: Como vai ser esse reencontro com o Botafogo, ainda mais em um jogo marcante (pela recordação da final de 1999)?

Esse reencontro vai trazer na memória momentos marcantes para mim. Um encontro entre Juventude e Botafogo sempre vai trazer na memória o jogo de 1999. É uma final que foi marcante para os dois clubes. O Juventude dá uma grande importância a essa partida. É um clube que está se reerguendo, procurando voltar para o cenário nacional e, quem sabe, em um futuro próximo, estar jogando a Série A, entre os maiores no futebol brasileiro. O clube vem trabalhando para voltar à elite do futebol brasileiro. Sabemos que vai ser um jogo difícil porque a equipe do Botafogo tem uma qualidade muito grande, é uma equipe forte, ainda mais agora com a contratação do Diego Souza e Cícero. Mas nós também temos confiança no nosso trabalho e vamos tentar fazer o nosso melhor nestas duas partidas para sair com a classificação.

– Por que acredita que o Juventude pode surpreender, a começar pela partida no Rio, e passar de fase?

Nós acreditamos muito no trabalho que estamos fazendo. Sabemos que teremos dificuldade nas duas partidas diante de uma equipe que vem se reforçando, bem estruturada. Temos que jogar com inteligência, com a intenção de fazer bons jogos e o objetivo na classificação. É um campeonato diferente, que dá condições a todas as equipes de sonharem com um voo mais alto e é isso que vamos fazer, cientes das dificuldades mas acreditando no nosso trabalho.

– Como está a experiência como auxiliar-técnico? Sempre foi um desejo seu? Pretende ser técnico em um futuro breve?

Estou muito feliz nesta nova fase da minha vida. Já estava me preparando há cerca de quatro anos, fazendo alguns cursos. Nunca me vi longe dos gramados e do ambiente do futebol. É algo que gosto muito e com o qual sonhava. Meu objetivo é ser treinador no futuro. Tenho que passar por este momento e estou procurando aprender com todos os treinadores. O Marquinhos Santos é um cara formidável, uma pessoa sensacional. Procuro aprender também com os atletas, comissão técnica. Já trabalhei com três treinadores: Julinho Camargo, Luiz Carlos Winck e Marquinhos Santos. Com eles posso aprender e acrescentar lições que tenho na memória de tantos treinadores que passaram por mim. Tive o prazer de trabalhar com nomes como Joel Santana, Ney Franco e vários outros. De cada um deles pude aprender bastante e, futuramente, quero assumir como treinador, trazendo as coisas boas que aprendi. Estou muito feliz nessa nova fase. Sei que tenho um caminho longo pela frente para que eu possa fazer bons trabalhos, se Deus permitir.

Zimbabwe will look to Younis Khan for inspiration as they set out to save the first Test against Pakistan in Harare. Set a massive 342 for victory, Zimbabwe will hope to bat out the day with the same patience and poise Younis displayed during his 10-and-a-half hour period at the crease, during which he brought up a second undefeated 200.Younis batted from the eighth over, when Pakistan were 21 for 2, until the end of the innings by which time he had put them in a commanding position. He saw off an extended period during which run-scoring was scant and shared in two century-stands and an 88-run last-wicket partnership to give Pakistan a healthy lead and show the value of an old-hand.”It was a fantastic innings,” Dav Whatmore said. “It really helped us out from the position we were in. When the captain was out, Younis really showed what he was capable of. He just continued and he showed a lot of faith in the younger players.”One of the two hundred partnerships Younis was involved in was with Adnan Akmal to make good on his intention, which he stated on Thursday evening, to help the next generation of Pakistan batsmen.Through trying periods, during which Zimbabwe’s bowlers rarely erred from a tight offstump line, Younis shepherded Adnan, who may have become frustrated were it not for the example Younis set.”He is the experience in the team and he showed it. He batted, even when his strike rate went down, it didn’t matter. Chris Rogers has been confirmed as Shane Watson’s opening partner for Australia in the first Investec Test against England at Trent Bridge. The Australia coach, Darren Lehmann, said Rogers had been inked in to partner Watson on the eve of the tourists’ final Ashes warm-up match against Worcestershire at New Road.”Watson and Rogers will open the batting for Australia, I’m comfortable with that, they’ll play the first Test,” Lehmann said. “All the rest are in the frame, but Rogers has obviously been picked for a reason by the previous selection panel and we’re really comfortable with that, he’s had a great summer here with Middlesex, made two big hundreds and been in good form.”Rogers was understandably delighted to know he is guaranteed to add to his one Test match, against India in Perth in January 2008.”I’m naturally excited. It’s a huge thrill,” Rogers said. “Anyone who has been selected doesn’t want to be a one-Test wonder.
