Rafa Benitez has had a bad start to his tenure, with a poor first half of the season by Everton’s standards currently sitting in 15th.

As a result, he has come under fire from fans, however, there is a chance to redeem himself by having a successful and impactful transfer window that can revive the club’s season by earning points and climbing the table.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, Everton are interested in signing Barcelona defender, Ronald Araujo, with Benitez potentially completing his defensive line overhaul in the summer by offering the 22-year-old better terms than the La Liga giants.

The Spanish manager has already secured two young full-backs, Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko, who joined the club over the last week since the transfer window has opened, with the signings suggesting that he is keen to add more depth and reliability in the back line.

The £35k-per-week gem who “has everything” according to Gerard Pique, has been at Barcelona since 2018 and is on significantly less than many of his peers in the first team, with just 18 months left on his basic contract, it is reported that the youngster will start looking at his options.

Mason Holgate has been a complete liability for Everton this season, from getting red-carded in a high footed dangerous challenge against Tottenham Hotspur to lacking in presence as part of the defensive line this, losing the majority of his ground duels (56%) this season and losing possession 22 times in the defeat to Brighton last weekend according to SofaScore.

One fan Tweeted a shout to sell the 25-year-old Toffees defender during his most recent performance, summing up how bad he’s been; “Sell Holgate at half time.”

Araujo, on the other hand, is having an amazing season so far with Barcelona, gaining a more consistent place in the first team, with 21 appearances and two La Liga goals so far.

According to SofaScore, when it comes to the Uruguayan youngster’s defensive credentials this season, he has won 68% of total duels, and when you compare to Holgate’s shocking possession loss (22) in his latest appearance, Araujo only lost the ball eight times in his most recent appearance against Betis.

Benitez may now have the opportunity to axe Holgate, as he is linked with a move to Burnley this January, leaving a place for Araujo to slot into the defensive line, who clearly offers a better output both offensively and defensively which would make a big difference to Everton’s current struggles.

Due to rumoured interest from Aston Villa and Manchester City, Bologna’s sporting director, Walter Sabatini, has put a dampener on the hopes of securing the teeanager’s signature when the transfer window in a few days.

As reported by BirminghamLive, Sabatini said;

“Hickey is a Bologna player, and despite the interest of many clubs, he will 100 per cent remain here.

“Last season was a short one for him because of injury but he has already shown us the great qualities he possesses as a player.

“Bologna are betting a lot on him, and he stays with us.”

Hickey has caught the attention of Premier League clubs thanks to his impactful performances in the Serie A this season, scoring five goals from his full back position in the last 20 appearances, and assisting the Italian side defensively to seven clean sheets so far this season.

Gerrard will be fuming

According to Sport Witness via TuttoSport, Gerrard has been “leading the race” in the interest Aston Villa have shown in the 19-year-old Glaswegian and has been keen on the player for some time, so this statement from Bologna’s sporting director will likely leave the former Rangers manager fuming.

It is understood that Aston Villa want to sign the Scottish teenager to push Matt Targett in his position at the club, with BirminghamLive reporting that Hickey is known by Gerrard’s coaches and Villa scouts have even been over to Italy to scout the youngster.

There is no doubt that the £11.7m-rated player would be a great addition to Gerrard’s Aston Villa side, and would certainly help to offer more creativity from the back, with his competitor for the left-back position at Villa Park, Matt Targett, scoring four fewer goals this season than the potential new signing.

Luckily, in football money talks, so if the Villa manager is seriously interested in signing the left-back, he may have a chance but will need to come up with an offer that Bologna cannot refuse, or postpone going in for his target until the Summer, but with the likes of Manchester City rumoured to be interested in the player too, it could be unwise to leave it too long to make a bid.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s Rangers play the second match of their three-game homestand as they host Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday.

The Gers beat St Johnstone 2-0 in Glasgow on Wednesday night and face St Mirren at home on Boxing Day to complete their triple-header.

Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent scored the goals in midweek and van Bronckhorst may want to make some changes to keep things fresh heading into the end of the month.

If the £17k-per-week beast is able to find some form and consistency in the final third of the pitch from midfield then there may be no need for the club to splash the cash on Veerman. Therefore, this decision from the 43-year-old could end up saving Ross Wilson from needing to spend millions of pounds in the transfer market next month, potentially saving those funds for more pressing matters, like a replacement in the heart of defence if Connor Goldson departs.

If Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s friends had been more alert it could have been him with the game’s most comprehensive nickname, but he became Shiv and Michael Hussey got the never-to-be lost label.It’s one Hussey has tried to under-play but the great sportspeople who aren’t natural geniuses require obsession to drive them past the above-average. Chanderpaul, a tiny labourer who has proved himself over 121 Tests and 15 years, has willed himself towards the top shelf of batting and from Thursday Hussey will attempt to re-establish himself as a must-have in Australia’s list.”He’s amazing really, he’s been phenomenal, particularly in the last few years,” Hussey said of Chanderpaul, who held out the Australians for 442 runs at 147.33 in the Test series last year. “He’s had his ups and downs over the years as well. I remember when he first came on to the scene he was unbelievable, then he had a bit of a down patch, but in the last couple of years he has been unbelievable really.”Hussey was the same, with a magical start followed by a trough that lasted until the final innings of the Ashes when he finished the lost series with 121. In an effort to avoid thinking about anything other than saving the game, Hussey turned his back on Ricky Ponting while he was waiting for the third umpire’s decision. The activity was for a player who just wanted to hold a piece of wood and touch something red.At 35, Chanderpaul is a year older than Hussey, who is starting to tone down his training so he can remain a fixture in all forms of the game. During the one-day series in India, where he scored 313 runs in six games, he barely practised to stay fresh. Hussey was never a big video watcher in his room like Chanderpaul, but he was always a hard trainer. Now he is more worried about “feeling comfortable with my game and getting my mind right”.This is what Hussey has been thinking about to improve his batting. “I have analysed my dismissals over the past year in Test cricket and there have been a few that have been a bit of bad luck and things just not going right. But the ones that I feel I have been in control in, that I stuffed up really badly, are the ones where I have been a little bit too tentative. I’ve been trying through the last three one-day series to come out a bit more confident. And if you’re going to get out cheaply at least it’s on my terms, being more confident rather than being tentative or negative.”That’s not the sort of detailed analysis Michael Clarke or Brad Haddin or Mitchell Johnson or Peter Siddle would offer. The alterations worked in the one-day arena but Hussey has to transform that into his Test play so he can hold his spot. Four summers ago he was the new face in Australia’s side, a 30-year-old debutant facing West Indies at the Gabba. He was so nervous that he tried an unsuccessful hook shot on 1.”It was a great experience but a horrible emotion,” he said of his first innings. Three months later he had three centuries and was a fixture in the middle order.”It’s nice to have done the full circle,” he said. “But I certainly believe in myself that I am still good enough to be at this level, can perform consistently at the highest level, and have the burning desire to go further and further.” Chanderpaul knows that feeling too.

وتابع: “لقد ظهر بمستوى رائع، لسنوات متتالية في تلك البطولة، كان الأمر مثير للإعجاب”.

وكان محمد صلاح قد انتقل إلى ليفربول في صيف 2017 من روما بمقابل 36.5 مليون جنيه إسترليني ومن هنا ظهر متألقًا مع الريدز وأصبح معشوق جماهير الفريق الإنجليزي.

Daqui a quatro dias, o Botafogo receberá o Juventude pela partida de ida da terceira fase da Copa do Brasil. O jogo marcará o reencontro da torcida com o time que está pressionado após a vexatória eliminação no Campeonato Carioca e com um velho conhecido do início da década: Fahel.

O ex-meio-campista, hoje, integra a comissão técnica fixa do Juventude, onde é auxiliar do técnico Marquinhos Santos. Ele começou no cargo em agosto do ano passado, na equipe de Luiz Carlos Winck. Em entrevista exclusiva ao LANCE!, Fahel falou do carinho especial que sente pelo ex-clube.

– A importância do Botafogo para mim é imensa. É um clube pelo qual tenho um carinho enorme, onde passei uma fase muito boa da minha vida, onde fui campeão e pude fazer grandes amigos. Hoje, defendendo o Juventude em uma nova função, vou fazer o melhor para que possamos sair com a vitória – disse Fahel, que também jogou e encerrou a carreira pelo Juventude (de 2016 a 2017).

Aos 37 anos, Fahel também destacou a crença no trabalho de reconstrução que tem ajudado a desenvolver no clube gaúcho, que busca se recuperar da recente queda à Série C e voltar à elite do futebol brasileiro. A experiência faz parte dos planos de Fahel em se tornar treinador.

– Nós acreditamos muito no trabalho que estamos fazendo. É um clube que está se reerguendo, procurando voltar para o cenário nacional e, quem sabe, estar jogando a Série A, entre os maiores no futebol brasileiro. Futuramente quero assumir como treinador, trazendo as coisas boas que aprendi. Estou muito feliz nessa nova fase – completou.

L!: Como vai ser esse reencontro com o Botafogo, ainda mais em um jogo marcante (pela recordação da final de 1999)?

Esse reencontro vai trazer na memória momentos marcantes para mim. Um encontro entre Juventude e Botafogo sempre vai trazer na memória o jogo de 1999. É uma final que foi marcante para os dois clubes. O Juventude dá uma grande importância a essa partida. É um clube que está se reerguendo, procurando voltar para o cenário nacional e, quem sabe, em um futuro próximo, estar jogando a Série A, entre os maiores no futebol brasileiro. O clube vem trabalhando para voltar à elite do futebol brasileiro. Sabemos que vai ser um jogo difícil porque a equipe do Botafogo tem uma qualidade muito grande, é uma equipe forte, ainda mais agora com a contratação do Diego Souza e Cícero. Mas nós também temos confiança no nosso trabalho e vamos tentar fazer o nosso melhor nestas duas partidas para sair com a classificação.

– Por que acredita que o Juventude pode surpreender, a começar pela partida no Rio, e passar de fase?

Nós acreditamos muito no trabalho que estamos fazendo. Sabemos que teremos dificuldade nas duas partidas diante de uma equipe que vem se reforçando, bem estruturada. Temos que jogar com inteligência, com a intenção de fazer bons jogos e o objetivo na classificação. É um campeonato diferente, que dá condições a todas as equipes de sonharem com um voo mais alto e é isso que vamos fazer, cientes das dificuldades mas acreditando no nosso trabalho.

– Como está a experiência como auxiliar-técnico? Sempre foi um desejo seu? Pretende ser técnico em um futuro breve?

Estou muito feliz nesta nova fase da minha vida. Já estava me preparando há cerca de quatro anos, fazendo alguns cursos. Nunca me vi longe dos gramados e do ambiente do futebol. É algo que gosto muito e com o qual sonhava. Meu objetivo é ser treinador no futuro. Tenho que passar por este momento e estou procurando aprender com todos os treinadores. O Marquinhos Santos é um cara formidável, uma pessoa sensacional. Procuro aprender também com os atletas, comissão técnica. Já trabalhei com três treinadores: Julinho Camargo, Luiz Carlos Winck e Marquinhos Santos. Com eles posso aprender e acrescentar lições que tenho na memória de tantos treinadores que passaram por mim. Tive o prazer de trabalhar com nomes como Joel Santana, Ney Franco e vários outros. De cada um deles pude aprender bastante e, futuramente, quero assumir como treinador, trazendo as coisas boas que aprendi. Estou muito feliz nessa nova fase. Sei que tenho um caminho longo pela frente para que eu possa fazer bons trabalhos, se Deus permitir.
