Trio will face PCB on Thursday

The meeting in London between the three Pakistan cricketers at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal and senior administrative and diplomatic officials has been pushed back to Thursday

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, the three Pakistan cricketers at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal, have returned to London from Taunton and will meet with PCB officials on Thursday for an internal inquiry. Cricinfo understands that the three men have already had an informal briefing with the chairman of the board, Ijaz Butt, ahead of a more intense round of talks in the wake of last week’s allegations in the News of the World. However, in an interview with the BBC, Ijaz Butt reiterated his stance, first outlined to Cricinfo on Monday, that he would resist all pressure to remove the players from the reckoning for the one-day series that gets underway at Cardiff on Sunday. “They will be free to play immediately,” he said. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, met with the PCB chairman on Thursday, while the ECB remain firm in their stance that the trio should not be allowed to play. The players’ presence in London effectively rules them out of Pakistan’s warm-up game against Somerset on Thursday, and though they are still expected to rejoin the squad on Friday, it now seems likely that they will have to remain in London for a planned meeting with the Pakistan high commissioner to the United Kingdom, as well as further interviews with the Metropolitan Police.Meanwhile the rest of the squad had another training session at the County Ground and Shahid Afridi, who has resumed the captaincy from Salman Butt, said the players wanted to move on. “All the players are focussed,” he told Sky Sports News. “What has happened has gone.”As the three players left for London a senior English journalist asked Butt “will you be back?”. Butt turned his head, looked the man in the eye and said: “Yes, why not?.” That response only attracted unwanted attention. A tabloid reporter pounced on the opportunity and said “are you guilty?”. Butt started to look towards the journalist but wisely did not react and walked into the cab.Butt’s insistence he will return shed further doubt on whether the three players allegedy involved will be suspended, something the England players are very keen takes place before the Twenty20 internationals.”The feeling among the players is that they are professional cricketers and the matches will go ahead,” Angus Porter, the Professional Cricketers’ Association chief executive, told Cricinfo, “but they don’t want them to become sideshows so there is a preference that it would be beneficial if the three players didn’t appear.”Amir was his usual jovial self at the team hotel on Wednesday morning, with a smile on his face, and was bantering with team-mates. He was later joined by Butt, who looked a little circumspect. Both are understood to have received support from Waqar Younis and Ijaz Ahmed, the head and deputy coach respectively. Asif has largely confined himself to his room since the spot-fixing story broke on Saturday night. The hotel has been the centre of attention since the Pakistan squad checked in on Monday afternoon, a day ahead of schedule. The lobby, a business lounge in normal times, was overnight transformed into a high-security zone with hotel staff keeping a close watch on movement in the area.A couple of unarmed policemen arrived minutes before the three players left for London in a luxury cab, with the team’s security officer Khawaja Najam in their wake. Fears of crowd trouble, of which there has been some in the past few days, proved unfounded.Meanwhile the rest of the squad carried on with their schedules, though the mood was palpably subdued. “It doesn’t feel like practice day, does it,” remarked Alex, the bus-driver who has been driving the team around on this tour. Afridi broke with habit to read the morning papers at the breakfast table. The team had a closed-door nets session at the Somerset County Cricket Club ground on Tuesday afternoon; they held another on Wednesday that was open to the media.

England squeeze home in country's first Test

The hastily-arranged match between the Australians and an England XI captained by Lord Harris, now deemed to be the first Test staged in England, was won by the home side but produced a thrilling contest which ebbed and flowed to the end

The hastily-arranged match between the Australians and an England XI captained by Lord Harris, now deemed to be the first Test staged in England, was won by the home side but produced a thrilling contest which ebbed and flowed to the end.The Australians came into the match without their trump card, the fast bowler Fred Spofforth who had injured a hand in a meaningless game a week earlier. His absence almost certainly proved the difference between the sides. Harris had failed to persuade two or three top names to play for him, but despite that the England team was strong.Despite the authorities dismissive approach to the whole tour, the appeal of a match between strong England and Australia sides proved a massive attraction. On the first day 20,814 spectators paid admission, with another 19,863 on the second. Thousands more found vantage points on trees outside the ground and on the gasometers. In glorious late-summer sun, Lord Harris won the toss and batted, reaching 404 for 8 by the close of the first day of three. WG Grace made 152 in three hours 55 minutes out of 281 scored while he was at the wicket, while Bunny Lucas and Lord Harris added fifties. Only three late wickets gave the Australians any hope.England’s tail was soon polished off on day two – the last six wickets fell for 16 runs – and then bowled out the Australians for 149. Fred Morley, the Nottinghamshire left-arm seamer, took 5 for 56 and the follow-on was enforced. When they reached the close on 170 for 6, still 101 from making England bat again, few doubted the game would extend to lunch on the final day.A small crowd of 3751 gathered for the last rites, and two quick wickets seemed to signal the end. But Billy Murdoch, Australia’s captain and a top-order batsman, remained and set about the bowling, and he found good support from the Nos 10 and 11, George Alexander and William Moule, who both chipped in with thirties. Built around Murdoch’s 153, they did enough to give their side a lead, but it was only 57.WG Grace, weary from bowling, chose to bat down the order but the decision backfired as England crashed to 31 for 5, both EM and FR Grace making ducks, FR bagging a pair in his only Test. WG Grace strode out at No. 7, steadied the innings, and England won by five wickets, sparking wild celebrations. The significance of Spofforth’s absence was underlined two years later at The Oval when England were set 85 and lost, Spofforth taking 14 wickets in the match. The was a sad footnote as Fred Grace, the youngest of the three brothers playing in the game, was dead within a fortnight. From The Oval he traveled to a match in the rain at Stroud, got soaked and then slept the night on a damp mattress. He contracted a chill and died days later from pneumonia. Despite failing with the bat at The Oval, his catch to dismiss George Bonner went into cricket folklore. The mighty Bonner skied one towards the gasometer side of the ground, the ball going so igh that the batsmen had completed two runs and were on they for a third when Grace held the catch. Where Grace took it was measured the same day as being 115 yards from the bat.

Leeds: Marcelo Bielsa reportedly speaks with Fenerbahce

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly held talks with Fenerbahce ahead of a possible summer move.

The Lowdown: Possible Bielsa successors named

Bielsa and Leeds are used to dealing with 12-month contracts at Elland Road, and now is the time of year where his future is being spoken about in the media.

Recent reports have name-checked Ernesto Valverde, Jesse Marsch and Carlos Corberan as possible successors to the Argentine, who has had to deal with numerous injury issues in his Leeds squad this season.

The Whites have struggled to replicate their first season back in the Premier League and are now flirting with the relegation zone with 15 games remaining, and shock reports have emerged ahead of their clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Latest: Meeting held

According to both Sabah and Fotomac, relayed by Sports Witness, Bielsa has held a meeting with Fenerbahce president Ali Koc.

The Leeds boss is thought to be on a list of candidates to take over in Turkey in the summer alongside Joachim Low, Jorge Jesus and Roger Schmidt.

The Verdict: Unlikely

As Phil Hay mentions, Bielsa is unlikely to show his hand in regards to his future until the Premier League is over, so these reports of a meeting with another club are hard to believe.

His time in Yorkshire may well be coming to an end this year, but until that is decided by all involved, it’s crazy to think he will be lining up his next move.

Hopefully, Bielsa will be able to get key players back over the coming weeks and drag the club clear of the relegation zone, cementing his legacy as a Leeds legend in the process.

Relieved Azhar Ali looks ahead to England challenge

Azhar Ali, the Pakistan batsman who played a crucial role in the Headingley Test victory, is pleased to be a part of the team that broke a 15-year losing streak against Australia

Azhar Ali, the Pakistan batsman who played a crucial role in the Headingley Test victory, is pleased to be a part of the team that broke a 15-year losing streak against Australia. Azhar told Cricistan.com how the experience of watching Pakistan’s losses to Australia over the years steeled him into action during his 51 in the second innings.”Before I became a cricketer, I was a fan. As both a fan and a cricketer there was always a desire to see Pakistan beat the best team in the world,” Azhar said. “There is a certain sense of frustration when you see Pakistan repeatedly lose from a winning position and when you stood outside looking in as a fan then there’s a feeling of helplessness too. That’s why I was determined that I would make the Aussies work for my wicket, they would have to take it from me.Azhar came into the starting line-up for the series following the retirement of Mohammad Yousuf and the exclusion of Younis Khan, which left the middle order extremely thin on experience. While the batsmen did enough to go past the line in Headingley, Azhar admitted it was Pakistan’s talented bowling attack that set up the victory.”We won this game because the bowlers put us into such a great position on day one, after that it was our game to lose. I’m really proud of my second innings partnership with [Imran] Farhat and of my first Test 50 but I was absolutely gutted to get out. When my wicket fell we only needed 34 more runs and I had wanted to stay till the end and win the game for Pakistan,” he said.Pakistan were on the brink of victory at the start of day four, needing 40 runs with seven wickets standing. Australia came back into the game, picking four more wickets including Azhar’s before Pakistan squeaked past the line. Azhar admitted the clutch of wickets made the dressing room nervous, but they were always confident of finishing it off.”Of course when wickets fall together, there will be some trepidation in any dressing room. But on the final morning, there were so few runs needed that we still felt that we would win the match.”Australia did their best to stop us, their fielding was brilliant. If they hadn’t blocked a couple of early shots, which were on their way to the fence, then the game would’ve been over a lot quicker. They are experts at applying pressure and making even the smallest of totals look like they’ll be hard to get. It worked for them against us in the past but today was our day and hopefully we’ve now broken that jinx.” Azhar said.Azhar was looking forward to the next challenge, the four-Test series against England which should be a rigorous test of his mettle at the one-drop position. “I agree that the No.3 position is a very important one. I want to be the best player that I can and I see batting at number three as a great challenge. It’s an opportunity for me to show what I’m capable of and it helps my confidence to know that the team management has trusted me to bat at such a pivotal number.”I look forward to the challenge of the upcoming Test series against England. They’re a very good team and we’re going to have to be at the top of our game to compete with them but I’m confident that this Pakistani team will give as good as it gets,” he said. The first Test of the England series begins at Trent Bridge on July 29.

Paine eyes potential Test debut

Tim Paine is hopeful of making his Test debut next month after being called in to Australia’s one-day side to replace the injured Brad Haddin

Tim Paine is hopeful of making his Test debut next month after being called in to Australia’s one-day side to replace the injured Brad Haddin. The uncertainty over Haddin’s recovery time for his elbow problem means that Paine could easily be kept on in the squad after their games against England, when they will then play two Tests against Pakistan.”I think it’s a possibility,” Paine told the of a potential baggy green. “He [Haddin] is hopeful he’ll be right for the two Tests but at the same time I don’t think he is going to take any chances with the Ashes very close around the corner.”That is something that might work in my favour. I’m sure if he’s not 100% he won’t risk it because I know speaking to him he is obviously very keen to be part of the side that wins back the Ashes so that is something he certainly won’t be jeopardising.”Paine, 25, has played 17 ODIs since stepping into Australia’s No. 2 wicketkeeping role last year. If he plays the two Tests in July he will be the second Australian gloveman to win a Test call-up due to a Haddin injury, after Graham Manou was a late replacement for the Edgbaston Ashes Test last year.Paine has been around the playing group regularly over the past year and was part of the ICC World Twenty20 squad, although he didn’t play a game in the Caribbean. His strong performances in the one-day team when opportunities have arisen earned him a Cricket Australia contract and he is looking forward to another chance in the starting line-up.”It is very exciting,” he said. “Obviously this is another opportunity to play for your country and do well and if I can do well it puts me in good stead for the future. I’m looking forward to going and being part of the side and being more comfortable around the group. It is going to be very enjoyable.”

Walker-Peters: Levy’s big Spurs mistake?

Selling Kyle Walker-Peters may be proving to be one of chairman Daniel Levy’s greatest mistakes at Tottenham Hotspur in recent years.

The Spurs supremo sanctioned his exit to Southampton as a part of a deal to send Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the other direction back in the summer of 2020.

He had enjoyed a six-month loan spell at St Mary’s prior to the move and then-manager Jose Mourinho was really keen to sign the Danish midfielder.

Hojbjerg was signed for £15m, whilst the Lilywhites raked in £12m for their former youth graduate, meaning there was only an outlay of £3m, per the BBC.

At the time it looked to be a stroke of genius from Levy, but that is really not looking to be the case now.

How’s he getting on?

In midweek, the Saints enjoyed a stunning come-from-behind victory over Spurs and Walker-Peters provided the north Londoners with a timely reminder of what they’re missing out on.

The 24-year-old was tasked with keeping left wing-back Sergio Reguilon quiet, which is something he did to a tee, having managed two clearances, one tackle and three ground duels won, via SofaScore.

He has really stood out at Southampton, where he has emerged as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first-choice right-back.

Of all the players to have started 13 or more matches this season, Walker-Peters ranks sixth in his squad.

He has averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per match, proving to be solid defensively, whilst also getting forward to contribute in the final third, where he has managed 1.5 dribbles and 0.9 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

The Saints head coach dubbed the right-back a “role model” who “knows what he has to do on the ball” and is a “complete” package. Meanwhile, club legend Jason Dodd likened him to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“He’s a modern-day full-back like Trent Alexander-Arnold. He’s great going forward, he’s quick, defensively that I like, in one vs ones there’s probably not too many people getting by him,” he told Love Sport Radio.

Spurs’ right-back nightmare

Tottenham have long had a problem in the right-back role, dating back to the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City in July 2017. Soon after that, Kieran Trippier left for Atletico Madrid and it’s been an ongoing nightmare ever since.

Serge Aurier, Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga and now Emerson Royal have struggled to make their mark in the position.

It’s awfully telling that new manager Antonio Conte was reportedly desperate to sign a new right wing-back during the January transfer window, despite the Brazil international only joining in the summer.

That’s because he has little faith in the 23-year-old, who had a devastating role to play in all three of the Saints’ goals on Wednesday night.

His influence in the final third is poor, whilst defensively he has started to look a little suspect. A stark contrast to that of Walker-Peters, who has been a very reliable option down on the south coast over the last season or two.

As such, Levy’s biggest mistake in recent times may not have been the club-record signing of Tanguy Ndombele, who departed on loan last month, but rather his premature decision to offload a young player with bags of potential.

The £18m-rated dynamo is a much better option than anything Spurs have right now.

AND in other news, £20.6m down the drain: Spurs flop has been draining Levy’s bank account for 76 weeks…
